ith the daily rush of the new year, many people can forget when to have an annual checkup with their doctor. Others even postpone cancer screening because of a lack of time, money, or anxiety. It's hard to think about cancer screening or prioritizing it when you're feeling healthy, but cervical cancer screening is a crucial part of staying healthy. Despite being one of the most preventable cancers, cervical cancer, also known as cancer of the cervix, affects us disproportionately as Black and Latina women who have a nearly 40% higher incidence than white women. Latinas, and especially immigrant women who have been in the country for less than ten years, face different barriers, such as lack of health insurance or transportation to health care facilities, that make it difficult for them to access the health care they need to prevent and treat cervical cancer. In 2018, the American Cancer Society reported that 2,400 Hispanic women were diagnosed with cervical can-

ENGLISH cer and 600 died from it. According to experts, 80% of these deaths can be prevented just by getting timely HPC and Pap tests. Although symptoms of cervical cancer are hard to notice, the tests can detect abnormal cells before they become cancerous, but once cervical cancer is detected, the first signs are • Abnormal bleeding, spotting or discharge • Menstrual periods with heavier than normal flow • Bleeding after sex Screening tests are simple and fast. These screening tests are crucial for everyone to live the full and healthy life they deserve. Cervical cancer screening tests are used to detect abnormal cells on the cervix that could cause cancer. The Pap test and HPV test are two kinds of medical tests for cervical cancer. A new study shows that the vaccine is effective up to age 45. That's why Planned Parenthood recommends that everyone between the ages of 9 and 45 receive the HPV vaccine to protect against genital warts and the different types of HPV that can cause cancer. We recommend that young people get the vaccine at age 11 or 12, so they are fully protected years before they become sexually active. Reproductive and sexual care is not a privilege. Part of our work at Planned Parenthood is to ensure that our community has access to lifesaving health care because reproductive and sexual health care is not a privilege - it is a basic human right. Reproductive health care is medical care, and that means all people should be able to access it, no matter what. Make an appointment today with your doctor for your annual check-up. on el ajetreo diario del nuevo año, muchas personas pueden olvidar cuándo hacerse un chequeo anual con su médico. Otras incluso posponen las pruebas de detección del cáncer por falta de tiempo, dinero o por ansiedad. Es difícil pensar en la detección de cáncer o darle prioridad cuando uno se siente saludable, pero las pruebas de detección del cáncer de cuello uterino son una parte crucial para mantenernos saludables. A pesar de ser uno de los cánceres más prevenibles, el cáncer de cuello uterino, también conocido como cáncer cervical, nos afecta de una forma desproporcionada a las mujeres de la raza negra y latinas, quienes tenemos una incidencia casi 40% mayor que las mujeres blancas. Las latinas y en especial las mujeres inmigrantes que llevan menos de diez años en el país, se enfrentan a diferentes barreras, tales como la falta de seguro de salud o de transporte a centros de salud, que hacen difícil el acceso a la atención médica que necesitan para prevenir y tratar el cáncer de cuello uterino. En 2018, La Sociedad Americana Contra El Cáncer indicó que 2,400 mujeres hispanas fueron diagnosticadas con cáncer del cuello uterino y 600 murieron a consecuencia de este tipo de cáncer. Según los expertos un 80% de estas muertes pueden prevenirse con tan sólo hacerte las pruebas del HPC y el Papanicolaou a tiempo. Aunque los síntomas del cáncer cervical son difíciles de notar, las pruebas pueden detectar células anormales antes de que se vuelvan cancerosas, pero una vez que el cáncer cervical se detecta, los primeros signos son los siguientes: • Sangrado, manchado o flujo anormales • Períodos menstruales con flujo más abundante de lo común • Sangrado después de tener relaciones sexuales • Las pruebas de detección son sencillas y rápidas.
Estas pruebas de detección son cruciales para que todos vivamos la vida plena y saludable que merecemos. Los exámenes médicos para revisar el cáncer cervical se utilizan para detectar células anormales en el cuello uterino que podrían causar cáncer. La prueba de Papanicolaou y la prueba del VPH son dos clases de exámenes médicos para detectar el cáncer cervical. Un nuevo estudio demuestra que la vacuna es efectiva hasta los 45 años, es por eso que en Planned Parenthood recomendamos que todas las personas de entre 9 y 45 años reciban la vacuna contra el VPH para protegerse contra las verrugas genitales y los diferentes tipos de VPH que pueden causar cáncer. Recomendamos que los jóvenes reciban la vacuna a los 11 o 12 años, para que estén completamente protegidos años antes de que sean activos sexualmente. La atención reproductiva y sexual no es un privilegio.
