Aside from living 8 years in her mother’s native Aruba, Niesha Butler spent her formative years living in Brooklyn, New York.

While growing up in Brooklyn, she went to a private school, where she was among the only girls and people of color.

When Butler was 11 years old, she took a computer science class that would have a profound impact on her.

This was especially true given her teacher.

“I remember him because he was just super cool and went out his way to make me feel welcome because he knew,” said Butler, referring to the fact that she was the only girl of color in the class.

“I just appreciated that to be honest,” she added.

Butler already had an interest in computers and gaming, a trait she gained from her father, who also taught her to play basketball.

A Basketball Star

In her household, academics was first and foremost.

During the school year, Butler’s main focus was education.

It was during the summers that she spent her time honing her craft in basketball, eventually distinguishing herself as among the top-ranked female basketball players in NYC, and the nation.

Butler would later earn a scholarship to attend Georgia Tech, an institution that allowed her to combine her two biggest passions.

Balancing both academics and athletics proved challenging.

“I think people can’t get it twisted,” said Butler. “When you go [to college] and have a scholarship, you’re not a student-athlete, you’re an athlete-student.”

Nonetheless, she credited the experience for helping train her for adulthood.

She’d go on to earn a degree in software engineering before going pro to the WNBA and overseas.

En el verano, se dedicaba a perfeccionar su técnica en el baloncesto, y acabó destacándose como una de las mejores jugadoras de baloncesto de Nueva York y del país.

Más tarde, obtuvo una beca para estudiar en Georgia Tech, una institución que le permitió combinar sus dos grandes pasiones. Compaginar los estudios con el deporte fue todo un reto: “Creo que la gente no puede entenderlo. Cuando vas a la universidad y adquieres una beca, no eres una estudiante-atleta, eres una atleta-estudiante”, dice Butler.

Stem Advocate Turned Entrepreneur

As a child growing up in NYC, Butler has seen many aspire to become professional athletes and not get there.

This is why she preaches the value of education.

Since retiring from her playing days, Butler remained in the sport as a commentator and analyst, but she has also remained committed to her other passion.

In August 2022, Butler opened NYC’s first Afro-Latina-owned STEM center, called S.T.E.A.M. Champs.

The passion project started amid COVID, when she learned just how many diverse children of color lacked access to basic skills to eventually obtain careers in the STEM space.

“It was clear to me that I needed to have something that these kids could walk up to, have classes and go in their neighborhoods to teach them,” said Butler. “And that’s what I did.”

With the new center, Butler’s goal is to provide a path for youth to have the valuable skills to “go pro” in something other than sports.

“I’m trying to make this their shot,” said Butler. “I’m confident and comfortable as an educator and as an adult to support them and set them up for success.”

Butler is proud of being a part of that 1% who successfully played sports at a professional level. However, she wants to build an avenue to provide youth will opportunities that are much more plentiful. z hacerse profesional en la WNBA y en el extranjero.

En agosto del 2022, Butler abrió el primer centro STEM afrolatino de Nueva York, llamado S.T.E.A.M. Champs.

El proyecto de su pasión comenzó en medio del COVID, cuando se enteró de la cantidad de niños de color que carecían de acceso a las habilidades básicas para obtener carreras en las áreas de STEM: “Tenía claro que necesitaba tener algo a lo que estos niños pudieran acercarse, dar clases e ir a sus barrios a enseñarles. Eso fue lo que hice”, dice Butler.

Con el nuevo centro, el objetivo de Butler es ofrecer una vía para que los jóvenes tengan las habilidades necesarias para “hacerse profesionales” en algo distinto al deporte: “Intento que sea su oportunidad; tengo confianza y me siento cómoda como educadora y como adulta para apoyarles y prepararles para el éxito”.
