he hand is not the hand alone, nor does the foot walk alone. Contrary to what Thing, the character in "The Addams Family", showed, the hand only works because it is linked to all the other parts of the body. The hand cannot function in the same way if it is not in relation, hopefully harmoniously, to the eyelashes, liver and kidneys; and the clearest proof of this is when that balance is broken, as in advanced diabetes where amputation has to be chosen in favour of the other interconnections of the body. And all these elements, in turn, are composed of billions of cells that depend on each other. This simple idea is the strongest argument against violence, says Judith Butler in an interview with The New Yorker: "When I do violence to another human being, I also do violence to myself, because my life is bound up with this other life." The epidemic of feminicide that is sweeping the continent is not a problem of women or of the countries where it is most evident, like Mexico, but a problem for everyone. With the murder of each person, a series of links (relational, cultural, economic, etc.) are being undermined, which are fundamental to being who we are and indispensable in order to continue being. That's why this time, in Women's Month, we've decided to focus our cover on two Latin American movements of collective mourning for violence MARCH 11 - 18, 2020
ENGLISH against women and defense of life: the Chilean collective LasTesis, with its performance "Un violador en tu camino" ("A rapist in your way") and the National Women's Strike organized in Mexico by Las Brujas del Mar. In both cases, both in the thousands of women who have sung "The rapist is you" and in the decision of the Mexican women to show their country what a world without them is like, there is a combative gesture that resists by all means to be violent. Even there, when revenge seems to make sense, and in this we still follow Butler's ideas. They are combative, non-violent gestures because what they do is to take a step forward, a step that requires courage, strength, and energy, without their force being so excessive that it strikes again at the fabric of our relationships. We rescue these two Latin American movements because they have been resolute in protecting relationships and life, as muscles contract and ache furiously to safeguard the wound. We present them with pain for the dead women and for all the ties that were broken. With pain for the men and children who also live this violence, for the elderly, for the laughter and the lost stories, for the bonds that will no longer be. But also with hope, because it is in these gestures that we take care of our relationships and new possibilities are born. THE EDITOR

FIGHTING FOR OUR FREEDOM Y I By | Por: JOHANNY ADAMES*

fight for my hermanas Latinas’ rights to abortion because I believe in freedom. Reproductive freedom means the ability to determine our future. As a Latina immigrant myself, I am well acquainted with this government’s efforts to restrict our choices. Visas, work permits, travel bans and increased ICE enforcement have already restricted our choices and ability to move freely. Now the Supreme Court's latest case threatens our right to the most intimate space we can control – our own bodies. I know all too well the challenges our communities already face in accessing reproductive care. Economic barriers, time restraints, language barriers, anxiety around an unfamiliar health system and low rates of insurance coverage make it hard for our people to access healthcare. This year, the Supreme Court will decide at least three major cases that determine our rights, our health, and our futures. Just this week the Court heard the first case, June Medical Services vs. Russo, a case about a Louisiana law that would impose medically unnecessary restrictions meant to make abortion inaccessible. While this case will decide a Louisiana law, it has national ramifications. If the Court rules the wrong way, it could open up the floodgates to restrictions across the country, essentially rendering Roe v. Wade meaningless. Less than four years ago, the Supreme Court ruled that an identical Texas law was unconstitutional in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt. The very fact that the court agreed to take up this new case means it is willing to revisit that. This spring, the Supreme Court will also rule on a law that would allow employers to restrict birth control access. If the idea that something so

ENGLISH basic as birth control access is now up for debate surprises you, you’re not alone. But it’s not isolated — since taking office, we’ve seen the Trump administration push policy after policy to take away our health and our rights — trying to restrict access to birth control, cut the effective Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, and even keep patients from accessing basic preventive care at Planned Parenthood. The administration even backed a lawsuit intended to gut the Affordable Care Act along with its protections for preexisting conditions, no-cost birth control, and affordable health coverage—a case the Supreme Court will also hear later this year. If the courts restrict our access to care even further, our Latinx/os communities will feel the impact. And it’s not what any of

us want to see. Like the majority of Americans, Latinos support access to safe, legal abortion — 67 percent of Latino voters do not want to see Roe v. Wade overturned, and 82 percent agree that women should make their own decisions on the issue without political interference. That is why us Latina advocates for reproductive rights will not back down. This is bigger than a restriction on our bodies. I grew up hearing over and over that lo difícil se hace inmediatamente, pero lo imposible lleva un poco más de tiempo, which is why we will not stand for these attacks on our reproductive rights, not now, not never. I believe in the commitment of Planned Parenthood Action Fund to continue working to ensure every person can access the care they need, no matter who they are, where they live or what language they speak.

ESPAÑOL Health v. Hellerstedt.

POLITICA BIDEN AND THE LATINO VOTE

he most important event for the Democratic nomination seemed to make the Trump Administration's predictions come true: Joe Biden could be their opponent in the November election. Fighting for the votes of 14 states, Biden, Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and billionaire Michael Bloomberg tried to win as many delegates as possible. The result was an overwhelming victory for the vice president, who won the
primaries in Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas. Sanders, on the other hand, took his state of Vermont, Colorado, and Utah, and Bloomberg barely got the Samoa caucus. Although Sanders won by far the state of California as well, Biden's sudden rise in the polls seems to have radically changed the landscape. But the key agent in the results has been, as we have previously warned, the Latino vote. Sanders won California with 49 percent of the Latino vote, according to NBC figures, and despite losing Texas, Hispanic voters there gave him 41 percent of the vote, 11 points more than he won in 2016. This has been a sustained trend since the early states of Iowa and Nevada, where the Vermont senator showed strong support in the Latino community.

Former Vice President Joe Biden has had the support of the African-American community across the country but has not offered a solid project for Latinos.
ENGLISH Chuck Rocha, one of the Sanders campaign's top advisors, told NBC on Tuesday that he demonstrated "that if you invest in the Latino community, they will show up and vote for you in huge margins.” This seems to be because the campaign's strategy has been to focus on voters who register without party preference, who very often are also Latinos. For his part, former Vice President Joe Biden has had the support of the African-American community across the country but has not offered a solid project for Latinos. For Albert Morales, political director of Latino Decisions, "Biden will have to do a better job" in attracting Hispanic voters, especially if he wants to win over states like Florida and the Puerto Rican vote on the mainland. “Sanders is going to get a delegate lead. It’s just a question of how much,” said Kyle Kondik, an analyst at the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, to USA Today. “If Biden can accumulate support and prevent Sanders’ support among Hispanics from going up as candidates drop out, then it becomes more doable.” With Michael Bloomberg's withdrawal from the race, this scenario is beginning to come true. According to polls by Univision, Latino Community Foundation and North Star Opinion Research, Sanders has 42% of the support of Latino Democrats nationwide, while Biden has only 15%. This is due, in part, to the shadow of deportation policies that the Obama Administration imposed during its two terms, as well as the poor acceptance that the former vice president has with Millennials. The Biden campaign published last December its immigration plan, a key issue for the Hispanic community, ensuring the reversal of many of the Trump administration's immigration policies, including the suspension of the DACA program. "The idea that anyone will be deported without actually having committed a felony or a serious crime is going to end in my administration," he said at a town hall in Las Vegas in December. However, his plan does not include the decriminalization of border crossings, something Sanders has supported from the beginning. The risk is that the Democratic Party, now largely backing Biden, will once again sacrifice the interests of the Hispanic community to try to beat Trump at his own game, while the president maintains his solid support among Latino Republicans. MARCH 11 - 18, 2020

The show is a reality TV competition which pairs up fashion designers and gives them challenges to see who advances to the next round and who doesn’t. Although (spoiler alert!) Ortiz-González didn’t make it very far in the competition, she said that the experience of filming with and getting to know a group of designers from a variety of backgrounds and aspects of the industry has broadened her horizons as a fashion designer, while also giving her increased access to new audiences with her appearance on a show created by the world's largest streaming platform. “I met amazing designers, and I think that was the most important thing [...]. Ortiz-González took on a different kind of world stage this month: Paris Fashion Week. Her collection, “Appropriation,” uses donated denim to construct ready-to-wear pieces that are an homage to miners in the gold rush era in U.S. history whose physically intensive work spawned the creation of “jeans,” or denim. “Denim is something that is very durable, we all use it, but it’s one of the most contaminated pieces that we have because all the water that you need to use to create the dye,” Ortiz-González said. Rico’s political, social, and cultural history and reality. Her collection “Stranded” used digitized images from Puerto Rico’s political and economic struggles since it was declared a U.S. colony in 1898 to form patterns on the pieces. Nearly three years ago, after Hurricane Maria devastated the island in Sept. 2017, Ortiz-González teamed up with architectural, stage and lighting designer Marién Vélez to co-found 22 Studio, which aims to help communities in Puerto Rico rebuild using concepts of participatory design. “22 Studios came after Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico - we saw a lot of stuff happening, and not enough hands to rebuild everything. "A WATER CACIQUE IN THE MAYAN PARADISE" Alfonso Romo Garza is an important Mexican businessman and, above all, he is the Head of the Office of the President of the Republic, the right-hand man of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. This collaborative investigation between Aristegui, Univision, Proceso, Ruidoenlared, VICE and Connectas shows the irregularities through which Romo has exploited the underground water reserves in Yucatan on which 2/3 of the country's renewable water depends. "Environmental damage on the Yucatan Peninsula led the Federal Attorney's Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa) to investigate in April 2018 a biotechnology mega-project founded by Alfonso Romo Garza, current chief of staff to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The inspectors found a 5,500-square-meter cenote that was covered with dirt, rocks and debris and turned into nothing but mud."

his chorus was perhaps the most powerful verse that Latin American women gave to the world last year, after the Chilean group LasTesis presented their performance “Un violador en tu camino” (A rapist in your path). We are starting Women’s History Month talking about the manifesto with which the continent shouted “¡Basta Ya!” (Enough is enough!), which it had been swallowing for decades. The way in which the choreography and chorus were repeated by thousands of women throughout the world revealed the so frequently dismissed issue of femicide, and sparked a surge of feminist encounters and protests. Contrasting with the continental roar for a change in public policies and cultural changes in favor of women’s lives, during the last months we have witnessed huge blunders from Latin American political leaders, evidencing an enormous lack of sensitivity, if not interest, on the matter: at the beginning of February, Ecuador’s president Lenin Moreno publicly stated that men are permanently submitted to the danger of being accused of harassment, especially if they’re ugly.

COVER ENGLISH February 21 marked the beginning of a crisis for the Administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador in Mexico, who, after attributing the assassination of Fátima –plainly, as her case has been made public– to the moral degradation caused by the neoliberal model, asked that those protesting outside the National Palace –his residence– not to paint the doors. And, finally, he seems to have discouraged Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, the First Lady, from participating in the National Women’s Strike, organized by the collective Las Brujas del Mar, from Veracruz, scheduled for March 9. While political leaders appear to be nonchalant and public policy equally indifferent, in Latin America the feminist groups are increasingly gaining visibility in the fight for our rights and are speaking out more so that we are respected on the most elemental of principles: that we are not assassinated solely because we are women.
A RAPIST IN YOUR PATH
Imagine walking by a plaza, a park or the stairs of a large building and finding dozens of blindfolded women expressing sheer determination. After a moment of silence, a bass drum begins to set the beat to which they will sing.

ENGLISH This performance was designed by Dafne Valdés, Paula Cometa, Sibila Sotomayor and Lea Cáceres, who make up LasTesis. Their objective was to take the thesis of feminism, especially those of Argentine Anthropologist Rita Segato, to the performance level. Two of Segato’s ideas stand out when we see the videos of these fierce women, time and time again: The first is the conclusion Segato reached while working with rapists in Brazilian jails: Rape is not a crime perpetrated by an erotic interest, but as an exercise of moralizing power. It is a person that wants to correct the behavior of another. The other equally shocking idea is that when a crime is committed against a man, this seems to be seen as a crime against humanity as a whole, while crimes against women tend to be construed as crimes relating to intimacy, erotism, and are therefore “lesser and unique crimes” –things that take place in small spaces to isolated individuals, which is untrue. “The blindfolds seem to remove women’s fear of social evaluation, submitting themselves to the gazes and judgements of others [...] The dance gives us a sense of embracing life, of the decision to enjoy it and freeing ourselves of the guilt placed MARCH 11 - 18, 2020
on us. However, there is also deep pain, even some wrath, present”, recalls Luisa María Zorrilla, who participated on November 30 in Bogota, where they carried signs with the names of 238 women who had been assassinated in Colombia during that year. “Seeing the names of so many who have been abused and violated produces a sensation of repudiation and contempt towards all those attitudes legitimizing those who have stripped away someone’s dignity at any time,” she added. “A Rapist in Your Path” has been reproduced in Santiago de Chile, Paris, Bogota, Medellín, Madrid, Barcelona, Berlin and Mexico City, among many other cities. The crowd of women confronting the public contradicts the idea that the victim is isolated and alone; the way that they hold the State, as much as the police and individuals responsible shows direct and structur-

ENGLISH al forms of violence, while the chorus line “y la culpa no era mía, ni dónde estaba ni cómo vestía” (And it wasn't my fault, or where I was or how I dressed. You were the rapist. You are the rapist) points towards elements of cultural violence against women. Unfortunately, gender violence is far from being an isolated event, limited to scant private spheres. It also does not obey geographical or demographic barriers. According to data released by the United Nations on November 24, 2019, one out of three women is a victim of sexual physical abuse at some time in her life. This is a problem affecting both Latin America and the US. In the US, for example, a study published by the World Health Organization (WHO) found that 70% of the women

had suffered physical and/or sexual abuse by their intimate partner. This type of performance gathers women, brings down the walls of isolation that covers the victims of gender violence and visibilizes the problem that, far from being an isolated and individual assault, affects all humanity.
AND IF THERE WEREN’T ANY WOMEN?
According to Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission, the number of women assassinated each day has increased continuously since 2015. According to its estimates, during the first nine months of 2019, 10.5 women were assassinated each day, compared to 6.5 in 2015. Of the 2,833 cases that
occurred between January and September 2019, 729 were recorded as femicides and 2,107 as intentional homicides for causes unrelated to gender. Mexico’s security situation is highly problematic both due to cultural factors and the growing drug traffic cartels, that attack both men and women. Of the dozens of assassinations of women that have taken place in Mexico to date, two of them have shaken the population: that of Isabel Cabanillas, a feminist artist and activist, and that of Fátima, a 7 year old girl. Both cases led citizens, above all women’s groups, to take to the streets. After days of mobilizing because of the assassination of the little girl, after the frustration felt from the insufficient responses from the President who, aside from “covering” her death with the

¿Y SI NO HUBIERA MUJERES?
ENGLISH decadence caused by neoliberalism, has not provided concrete strategies to protect women and prevention measures for the attacks… After all of this, the question emerged: Since they are wiping us out, what would happen if we were gone? This question was raised by the group Las Brujas del Mar, which they decided to reply to with a National Women’s Strike convened for March 9. “They don’t take care of us? They don’t care if we do or don’t exist? Well, look at what it would be like if we were no longer here! No girls going to school, no women teachers, no women on the street, don’t go to work, don’t go to the supermarket, don’t leave home.” This initiative has been backed by at least 16 news organizations, Televisa and El Heraldo among them; 69 educational institutions, including UNAM and Tecnológico de Monterrey; 42 state and federal institutions, such as the Departments of the Interior, Federal Health, Culture, Environment and Natural
Resources, National Defense and the Marines, the Mexican Senate, the Lower House, Walmart Mexico, Mercadolibre, Deli, BBVA Mexico, Grupo Bimbo, Coca Cola, Scotiabank, Discovery, Grupo Santander and Warner Music Mexico. Among many other public life leaders, Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, wife of Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the First Lady, quickly backed the strike on her social media, only to post opposing advertising a few hours later. This has given rise to various voices of alarm and protest, for it is obvious that the First Lady was forced to recant by the Head of State. With or without the First Lady, Mexican women are determined to make themselves felt, for their peers, co-citizens and rulers to feel the impacts of their absence, for them to understand that we want ourselves alive and that in inhabiting the same world, we need them in order to achieve this.

ENGLISH The measure would go even further, imposing fines on programmers equivalent to 2.51% and up to 5% of income if they persist in giving free reign to messages, expressions or content that promote male violence. During the announcement of the proposal, Salomón Jara cited the study Gender violence in reggaeton, carried out by the University of Chile, which found in 59 of 70 songs surveyed, there were more than 568 violent and hateful references to women, whether physical, psychological or symbolic. "Among the representatives of the genre, the most violent was Maluma with his song "Cuatro Babys", in which 44 mentions of violence were recorded," said the Mexican senator. "The disturbing thing about these messages is that they are not transmitted at 2 a.m. through restricted media, but rather we hear them on the radio and on television during triple-A hours (for all publics)." "This is what your sons and daughters, my daughters and granddaughters, the children of all Mexico are exposed to," he concluded.
A NON-MACHISTA REGGAETON?
Although the race to end gender violence is wreaking havoc in Mexico - last year alone there were 976 femicides in the country - according to the Mexico City Human Rights Commission, the causes are multiple and are due to a cultural context of misogyny and machismo that is deeply rooted, but also to social, economic and political problems such as criminal impunity and poverty. This leads us to reflect on whether these prohibitive measures are not a path to greater evil and whether they should be accompanied by greater efforts to educate citizens about equality. Besides, excessive protectionism could lead to the infantilization of adults and yes, to the repression of an artistic manifestation as happens with narcocorrido, which Jara has not mentioned. Likewise, there are great reggaeton artists who have made feminism and inclusive messages one of their best assets, such as the Puerto Rican Bad Bunny who, after being accused of the opposite, threw himself into using the powerful reggaeton sounds to the contrary. "We don't want one more death. Less violence and more perreo," the artist wrote on his Instagram account. Maybe it's about making visible those in the mainstream that send a message of social consciousness instead of gagging those who set the wrong example.

or Ecuadorian Mónica Ojeda, writing is like opening your eyes underwater and holding your breath. Her work, reminiscent with that of authors like Mariana Enríquez, Fernanda Melchor or Ariana Harwicz, pulls us by the leg. It takes us with it underwater so we can see the horror that lies in beauty and vice versa. In her latest novel, "Mandíbula" (ed. Candaya), which will be available in U.S. bookstores in 2021, she explores the dark areas of relationships between womenmothers and daughters, teachers and students, and teenagers in the oppressive atmosphere of an Opus Dei school for girls in Guayaquil. There, a series of terror-loving quinceañeras invent a primordial deity to which they pay a strange, sadomasochistic cult while provoking terror in a bitter Spanish teacher who is haunted by the ghost of her own mother. "Mandíbula" ('Jawbone') is a pure women's novel, but it is also an act of cannibalism... I was very interested in exploring the emotions in women's bodies by taking it to the extreme limits of experience. We have always been given the ethics and emotional responsibility of the family and that has become a possible scenario of terror. Our psychology, because of this responsibility, has been broken many times and filled with opacities and dark areas. As you say, this relationship between teachers and students, mothers and daughters, and even between students themselves is very passionate and therefore very close to violence.

CULTURA ENGLISH Is the violence exercised by women different from that of men? I believe that violence is a human condition and, since women have been denied the right to exercise more physical violence, we have found our own tactics. The violence in women's socially repressed bodies has not been so much in hitting as in more subtle areas that have to do with isolation and control; with putting psychological pressure on the other person. The “creepypasta,” those horror stories that emerge from the Internet, have their protagonist in the book. In fact, as with Slenderman, their effect is to get inside our heads. And some of them are terrifying, yes. When I first started reading creepypastas, I had nightmares and suffered from sleeplessness. Then I realized that words are capable of contaminating someone's head, like Annelisa's character, who inoculates her friends with contaminating words and is very manipulative and intelligent. I am afraid of people who are able to use words in such a way that they make you doubt what you know, or even make you think that you think dif-
ferently. Being under the spell of someone else's word. And they also behave in a very subversive way through sexuality. Can sex be a weapon of rebellion? Well, actually, it's also been a form of liberation of women's bodies. I'm very interested in a phenomenon that occurred in the second half of the 20th century in the southern cone. The military dictatorships that existed were right-wing and had a discourse on women and mothers similar to that of Opus Dei. In that context, women writers emerged who began to write directly pornographic novels with female characters and even had to go into exile and the works were censored. Authors such as Armonía Somers, who sought in pornography a way to vindicate themselves politically.

Through her oral narrations and puppets – which were first were seen throughout the city's library network – she managed to get Spanish onto the shelves in New York City. Her effort to promote Hispanic culture also came at a time when the Puerto Rican population was growing in New York and it needed an anchor. Pura has also inspired hundreds of Latinas to become librarians. One is Valeria Garcia,

ura Belpré first came to Manhattan from her native Puerto Rico in 1920 to help with a sister's wedding. She no plans to stay and was going to be a teacher on the island. However, Belpré, who would become a legendary librarian and storyteller, ended up living in the city until her death 62 years later. During those years, she loved books, puppets, and children, and gave a lot to New York. She was not only the first Latina employee in the history of the New York Public Library, but the first Puerto Rican within the city's public library network. In 1932, she even published a classic of Latino children's literature in the United States, Pérez y Martina, based on a popular Puerto Rican tale with Spanish roots.

"Oh my God, tell your friends at school that there's going to be a Hispanic lady telling a story," Valeria told NPR of her mother's enthusiastic words when Pura began bringing her bilingual stories to the neighborhoods to make the migrant children feel at home. Vianela Rivas, a Dominican librarian in Washington Heights, felt the same call.
"As I read about her [Belpré], I thought, 'I can do this. I can read books to children in Spanish and tell their parents about the resources the library has for them," she said. "Thanks to her, we have a Spanish story hour," says Rivas. "We have computer classes in Spanish. And I feel that as a Latina librarian we have a responsibility to continue doing the work she started." It had such an impact that each year the American Library Association presents an award in her name to recognize the best books for children and young people written and illustrated by Latinos. Nationally, the proportion of Latino authors is still very low, especially considering that 25% of U.S. public school students are Hispanic according to NPR.

he real-life stories of U.S. Latinos are now an AL DÍAPodcast. AL DÍA has turned Cuéntame, one of the most impactful sections, into a podcast. Now, rather than capturing their voice in words, readers will be able to hear them recounting their unique journeys in this country. In the first episode of Cuéntame, we brought to the studio Salvador Rodriguez, a young and inspiring entrepreneur from Chester County. He talked about his family, the beginnings of his business and the personal struggles he’s faced in the past few years on the road to success. Sal, as his friends call him, was only 17-years-old when he opened his first phone store, after choosing not to attend college. Initially, it was a youthful desire he wasn’t prepared for, but that over time blossomed into a successful business. However, as is often the case, money only deepens pre-existing problems, and Sal found himself further trapped in his substance abuse. It was a painful realization that impacted everyone around him, and took a toll on him and his business. Leaving behind that harmful lifestyle, he was able to run 11 stores successfully and motivate others, pushing his employees to keep learning and growing. AMBAR LUCID
“A Letter to my Younger Self” For those who don't understand the versatility of bilingual Latinos in moving comfortably from one language to another, Ambar Lucid's music is a good way to explain it. At just over 20 years old, this New Jersey-based Latina singer became a phenomenon after the release of "A Letter to my Younger Self," an abridgment of Dreaming Lucid, her first album.
FLOR DE JAMAICA “Huesos”
Down in Bogotá, Valentina Anzola and Tomás Pinzón travel through Latin American rhythms with the sweetness of their compositions, reinterpreting them with hints of sweet jazz, that end up being, as they say, "freshwater that impregnates the skin.” "Bones" was their first single and is the best way to get to know this musical gem.
