ruguayan film-maker Arami Ullon dedicated seven years to produce the documentary about the Ayoreo people of her country. We are talking about “Nothing but the Sun”, a story of exile, violence, cultural roots, and struggle, narrated by Mateo Sobode Chiqueno, who has immortalized the testimonies of fellow indigenous members of his community. AL DÍA talked to Ullon to know details of the film, her career. She studied in the United States in Boston Film and Video Foundation, and she is an icon in the film industry of Paraguay. “Nothing but the Sun” was chosen to represent Paraguay in the categories Best International Movie and Best Documentary in the Oscars 2022. The film premiered in 2020 International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), and has won many awards in a dozen of international contests. Its latest projection was in early March in the Global Roots Film Festival in Vermont. When talking about the documentary, Ullon says: “It is a mix of feelings. Guilt for the privileged place where I am to tell a story, the opportunities that one has, but others don’t. Also anger, sadness, indignation, lots of tenderness, and understanding.”

However, anyone can sign up. The site offers over 20 AP, Core, and Experimental accredited courses, which can be used to apply for college. Both founders are Ivy League-educated, and one of their main reasons for creating the site is to allow students of all backgrounds a chance at the education they saw many of their college peers enter with. Vilardo explained, “We want to provide [someone from] any socioeconomic status or ZIP code with a top-tier education that is affordable. If we can empower anybody in the country and eventually the world to be able to access the best education, that is a monumental lift to society.”

HOW IT STARTED

Ruano is the child of Mexican immigrants who grew up in Los Angeles and went to public school. He attended Harvard University before getting a job at the management consulting company, McKinsey & Company. Vilardo’s family also hails from Latin America, more specifically Colombia. He attended seven schools, including community college in only five years, before attending and graduating from the University of Pennsylvania. After college, he worked for Uber and helped them develop Uber Freight. His connections at Uber would come in handy when he and Ruano decided to start Emile Learning. They got some of their initial funding from the Uber Alumni Investment Club Syndicate, and 30% of their first 40 employees had also worked at Uber.

P

rogressives closely watched the results from the congressional races in Texas on Tuesday, March 1. Two Latinx candidates, Greg Casar and Jessica Cisneros both came out successful in their own right. Casar, a 32-year-old Democratic socialist, landed a win in the open primary in the state’s 35th Congressional District, which stretches from San Antonio to Austin, beating his closest rival, State Rep. Eddie Rodriguez, by over 40 points. In Texas’ 28th Congressional District, Cisneros forced Rep. Henry Cuellar into a runoff election. Activist groups like Justice Democrats, which endorsed Cisneros and Casar, have been promoting the races as potential signs that the Democratic base is eager for liberals who will fight harder for President Joe Biden’s agenda.

COUNCILMEMBER TO CONGRESSMAN?

Casar became the youngest person ever elected to the Austin City Council in 2014, representing a working-class section of the city. As the son of Mexican immigrants, he has been an activist since college and has worked intimately with the city’s immigrants rights movement. “Greg Casar shows up for working people, and they showed up for him. This victory is a result of the work he put in as a public servant. We were with Greg from day one, and look forward to working with him to make America work for all of us,” said Texas Working Families Party co-director Pedro Lira in a statement. os progresistas siguieron muy de cerca los resultados de la carrera por las elecciones al congreso el martes 1 de marzo en Texas.

We are going to win because all of you are standing behind me. Jessica Cisneros ENGLISH sive members of Congress ever to serve from the Lone Star state. As a city councilmember, he became known for supporting cuts to the police department, and fighting against homeless encampment bans. He also had the support of leading progressives like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders. “Together, we’re taking our fight to the halls of Congress — to fight and deliver on passing Medicare for All, protecting reproductive rights, creating good jobs and fixing our power grid,” Casar said in a statement.

CHALLENGING THE ‘KING OF LAREDO’

Just a few years ago, Cisneros was an intern in Henry Cuellar’s congressional office. Now, the former intern will be facing off in a rematch on May 24 against the nine-term incumbent. In 2020, Cisneros came within 2,700 votes of claiming victory over Cuellar in the Democratic primary. Her father and volunteers collected all her campaign signs after the loss, knowing there might be a sequel. “We knew from the very beginning this was going to be a very tough election. We deserve a lot more than what we’re being offered. And I’m really glad

that over half of the voters agree that it’s time for new leadership,” Cisneros said. In Texas primaries, any candidate who finishes below 50% faces the second place vote-getter in a runoff. As of March 2, Cuellar had won 48.4% of the vote, Cisneros had 46.9%, and another liberal candidate, Tannya Benavides, had 4.7%. Like Casar, Cisneros is also the child of immigrant parents from Mexico. Her parents migrated to the states before she was born, after their older daughter needed serious medical care. After high school, Cisneros moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas and went on to law school there, with a focus on immigration law. During her campaign, she often cited her work in law helping asylum seekers stuck at the border under Trump’s Remain in Mexico policy. But what likely helped Cisneros the most was that voters were simply focused on a change in leadership, especially as Cuellar faces an FBI investigation. “No matter what happens, whether again, the victory is coming today, later tonight, or tomorrow or maybe even in May. We are going to win because all of you are standing behind me,” Cisneros told supporters.z

Me

n Monday, Feb. 28, a bill to protect the right to have an abortion in the U.S. died in the Senate after it failed to gain enough Republican support to pass a procedural vote. While the Women’s Health Protection Act wasn’t expected to be successful, Democratic leaders felt pressure from constituents to put it to a vote anyway in a show of support for federal reproductive rights. Advocates for reproductive rights see federal legislation as one of the best ways to codify the right to abortion in the country, especially after the Supreme Court’s conservative judges indicated they could soon cut constitutional protections. “Sadly, it seems like the Supreme Court is posed to severely limit abortion rights in the coming months. That’s why this bill is essential. Congress must codify into law what most Americans have long believed — that abortion is a fundamental right,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

THE FILIBUSTER AND MANCHIN

The bill needed several Republicans to support it to reach the necessary 60vote threshold to overcome a filibuster. The final vote was 46-48. Every Republican and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin voted against proceeding to the bill. The Women’s Health Protection Act, co-sponsored by 48 Senate Democrats, states that healthcare providers should be able to provide abortions without a number of barriers — including restrictions on abortions prior to fetal viability, which many states currently have in place. It also proposed that the U.S. Attorney General could sue any state or

A ‘REALPOLITIK’ LESSON

These are some excerpts of the comment published on March 11: “Now that the United States president, Joe Biden, has prohibited Russian oil imports, one problem is how to replace it. A possible source is Venezuela. Being under the regime of President Nicolas Maduro, the country was under American sanctions imposed since 2017. Softening these sanctions would equal accepting the lesser evil. …American officers visited Caracas…, the first encounter of this type in years, and they talked about relaxing oil-related sanctions. Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), the State-controlled energetic giant, has the biggest oil reservoirs in the world. …could easily replace the 245 million crude barrels and related products that the United States obtained from Russia in 2021. …Conversations did not make a lot of progress. …But the idea of approaching Maduro is loaded with political and moral tension, and there is also the irony that Russian crude imports in America greatly substituted imports from Venezuela until the sanctions were imposed.”

‘WILL BIDEN PUSH DUQUE TO RECOGNIZE NICOLAS MADURO?’

This is a comment by Juliana Gil Gutiérrez published on March 10: “The meeting between Joe Biden and Ivan Duque in the White House marked an unexpected turn of events: the United States president rapprochement with the president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro. Three years after the legitimacy of the Bolivarian government was not recognized by Colombia in January of 2019, right after the White House took that same decision, Biden now changed the discourse of his predecessor Donald Trump raising the question: Will Duque’s administration also have to recognize the regime? Several other Latin American nations took a step towards releasing tensions with Venezuela. Some of them are Argentina, Bolivia and Peru; and the United States seems to be going in that same direction. Duque’s administration is caught in the middle of that recognition. …Russian invasion to Ukraine and the encounter between Biden’s envoys and Venezuelan representatives accelerated an appointment between the dignitaries, which Duque had been searching for more than a year.”

BIDEN PLAYS CHESS FOR THE VENEZUELAN OIL

In its editorial of March 9, it wrote: “Biden’s intentions may just be a convenient measure and necessary in this critical juncture, or it may have a domino effect in the mid-term, provided that purchase of resources from Venezuela derives into a diplomatic effort with international impact.” Also, “Venezuela has been a problem for the United States of America, a strategic challenge it has not been able to handle, and also a geopolitical disaster. Not only should they have closed the doors to Venezuelan petroleum, …but it settled for letting Chinese and Russians divide up the resource in America’s very own backyard. (…) Trump failed big time recognizing Guaido as the chief of state, because belligerence and the war narrative only strengthened Maduro’s internal position, and pushed him even further to closer ties to powers antagonistic to Washington. Hostility proved to be ineffective, but what prevails in the exchange of Venezuelan crude and dismantling of Moscow and Beijing’s influence over Caracas is a smart take on diplomatic strategy, which only three weeks ago seemed to be impossible.”

IS BIDEN’S DECISION ON RUSSIAN OIL ABSURD?

On March 9, commenter Luis Miguel Gonzalez wrote: “To what extent will Biden’s decision affect Russia? …Russian energetic sector is huge and the decision to isolate it seems like a lethal blow, doesn’t it? In practice,…it is everything but a silver bullet. …It may also find other markets such as China or India. Closing the American market will not be enough to strangle ‘that artery of the Russian economy’, among other things because the United States associates in economic sanctions are not ready to join that measure. The European Union is giving moral support, but it is aware of its leeway. ...Excluding the Russian banking system from SWIFT does choke Russian economy because it is a coordinated offensive by all associate countries of the system, three quarters of the world GDP. This makes the charging and payment operations of Russian imports and exports harder. …Putin will not be able to use half of its huge foreign exchange reserves; those abroad.” Complica las operaciones de cobros y pagos relacionados con las importaciones o exportaciones rusas. or seven years, filmmaker Arami Ullon has followed every step of Mateo Sobode Chiqueno, a documentary maker of the ethnic Ayoreo group, and a resident of the Chaco, in Northeast Paraguay. Since the 70s, Mateo has tirelessly crossed these desolate lands with a cassette recorder in hand, immortalizing the testimonies of other Indigenous people of his community who are no longer isolated. Like him, they were forced to abandon their ancestral lands to try to get into what they call, “the world of white people.” All this time, his work allowed him to collect stories on the emotional impact of exile, violence, holding onto cultural roots, and the constant search for alternatives to survive day to day. Each film, all intellectual properties of Mateo, also have music —

AN UNKNOWN WORLD UNCOVERED

Paraguay, located in the heart of South America between Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil, is one of the few countries on the continent that includes Spanish and a native language — Guarani — as official languages. Despite being a bilingual nation, there is a profound unawareness of everything related to its 19 ethnic groups made up of over 117,000 individuals, according to data collected in 2019 by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). With that number, the native population is considered a minority in a territory of 157,065 square miles where another 7,000,000 people live. Encouraged by the need to document the story of survival of the Ayoreo, and their capacity to rebuild their home, Ullón went deep into a world that entails thorough investigation and required deep introspection. “It is a mix of feelings. Guilt for the privileged place where I am to tell the story, the opportunities that one has, but others don’t. Also anger, sadness, indignation, lots of tenderness, and under-

standing. I went through different emotional states, but I learned to listen again. The world of the Ayoreo is complex and their current situation is too. I assumed my own ignorance, and decided to listen, that was my best choice. In this case, listening means accepting being affected, learning from the other, learning what happens to you when facing these situations, and understanding that you operate as a colonized individual,” she said, while choked up with emotion.

AN EVERLASTING LESSON

For the filmmaker, Nothing But The Sun was an opportunity to reflect on the way the traces of colonization in Latin America determine people’s perception of native world view. “We don’t see ourselves as descendants of indigenous people, we feel closer to a European lifestyle than to an Indigenous one. But, a high percentage of the Paraguayan population, for example, has — at some point of their ancestral background — Indigenous roots. I questioned that eurocentrism, and it will remain a question for life,” said Ullón. During filming, she learned to value an attitude that is missing in contemporary society. “Conversations between the protagonists happen without almost any judgment, without being violent. There is

respect for the other, and I believe that enriches us, who from the western view have lost something and are losing It more every time: empathy is at risk,” she said.

OFFICIAL (DIS)INTEREST

The same curiosity from the director for the Ayoreo mobilized some 4,000 Paraguayans in the middle of the pandemic to discover a completely unknown story through film. There was also major success at the box office. The filmmaker hopes the film will show in other corners of her country soon, at cultural and education centers. The premiere of Nothing But The Sun awakened the interest for the documentary film genre in Paraguay, and it even had a political effect. In November 2021, Paraguay’s Congress recognized Mateo Sobode Chiqueno for his contribution to culture, which made him the first Ayoreo to receive a distinction of this kind by the legislative body. Sobode took the opportunity at the ceremony to vindicate the restitution of ancestral land for his people. “We are dying little by little, we ask you to stop deforesting the areas where the Indigenous peoples live,” he said. The attention received by the legislature did not pass over to the other institutions of the State created to safeguard the rights of native peoples, and their quality of life threatened by deforestation. The private sector also showed out in support. Some non-governmental organizations showed their determination to support the digitization of Mateo’s recordings to create a sound archive and preserve the Ayoreo legacy. “There are people who believe that if they are not directly involved in the life of the Ayoreo, that doesn’t affect them; but it does affect them because we share the same world. There are also people who are committed and take responsibility. Average citizens are political beings, they have the possibility to make better choices and generate changes in their environment. laws that protect the forests, regulate deforestation and ensure rights to indigenous people,” Ullón emphasizes.

CINEMA: A CATALYST FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

Knowing that patience and perseverance are fundamental for professionals in film, Ullón encourages young talent to work without fearing rejection. “When you present a project and they say ‘no,’ you have to wake up the next day and present it at a different place until, at some point, somebody says ‘yes.’ No movie has ever had a sequence of approvals without several rejections too. That doesn’t exist,” she said. She insists that at this point, the most important thing is to make the most of how gratifying it can be to work in the film industry. “We are always congratulated for our achievements and recognition, but something to celebrate before that is working in cinema: our work is what is important. We have to keep researching, writing and re-writing the times necessary for our efforts to materialize and become a movie. That is the first objective. If there is or there isn’t a prize, that is secondary,” said Ullón. Her role as director allows Ullón to hold on to her dream and desire for a second documentary — and others about the reality of the Ayoreo — to take the first steps in the long way towards making the Indigenous peoples of Latin America visible. “You hope, dream and believe that you can have an influence on reality, even a little; but, sadly there is little innocence left in me, and I also know that changes require much more than a movie,” she said. The Paraguayan-Swiss production Nothing But The Sun is now showing in festivals around Europe and the United States. Its next screening will be in March at the Global Roots Film Festival in Vermont. It is expected to be available on streaming platforms throughout 2022.z

Documentary maker Mateo Sobode is the center of the documentary that shows the fight for survival of the Ayoreo after being displaced from the forest and forced to re-build their home.

“I

remember that…when I was 5, my mom took my brother and me to the United States to have a better life. I remember that…she rented an apartment in a rough neighborhood in Santa Ana, California, and had to lock us up inside only in the company of a tape recorder,” read one of those ‘little books’ that the Mexican director, Samuel Kishi Leopo, 37, carries with him wherever he goes. He had written the paragraph himself, where in some sort of game he was trying to emulate the first words of the thousand phrases of the book “I remember” by Joe Brainard. “When I saw it, I just read it and said: This can be a movie and I can take it to therapy too. Ok I’ll take it both places. And that is how the project started to take shape,” said Kishi Leopo in an interview with AL DÍA News from Guadalajara, Mexico. That memory, which until that moment stayed dormant in his memory, has been the inspiration to produce and direct a movie that, in less than two years, has – literally – gone around the world winning awards and reaping success in Berlin, Miami, Havana, South Korea, Lithuania, Argentina, Greece, Brazil and Switzerland. The film is called “Los Lobos.” Brothers Max and Leo Najar Marquez, ages 8 and 5, have been chosen to travel from Mexico to Albuquerque with their — fictional — mother Lucia (Martha Reyes Arias) to find a better life. “While they wait for their mother to be back from work, children observe through the apartment window the unsafe neighborhood where the motel where they live is located, mainly inhabited by Hispanics and Asians. They spend their time listening to stories, rules and lessons in English that their mother leaves in an old cassette player. They build an imaginary universe with drawings while they long for their mother to keep her promise of taking them to Disneyland one day,” reads the synopsis of the feature film. The names of the main characters were changed…This is the story of Sam-

ENGLISH uel and Kenji Kishi Leopo in Santa Ana, California, in the ’80s.

REBUILDING MEMORY

For the production, Samuel had the help of his younger brother: Kenji, a composer specialized in film and scenery. “This is the first person I tell a story to when I’m about to write. We have a close relationship, and he can tell very fast when something is good and will work. He likes a lot to be involved from the start because sonority evolves from those first ideas,” he commented. The Kishi Leopos were aware, from the first moment, that even if the production was partly fictional, it would portray on the big screen the stories of Mexican children who migrated to the United States. The idea was not daunting at all to them, to the point that Kenji had the first soundtrack in less than a week. Aside from his brother, Samuel went to the other protagonist of the story: his mother, whom he interviewed more than once to put all the pieces together, revive memories and compare them to his own. “I will tell you something that I thought was very interesting: once we finished the movie, I showed it to her, and she started reviving other completely different things, things that she did not remember. Our memory as a family was reconstructed when the film was finished,” he said exited. “I thought it was curious to see how cinema builds and rebuilds those memories; things she didn’t remember, but she revived through that screen. For example, strangely enough, she didn’t remember the time we had to sleep on the floor at all. Like, it was not in her head that much, and I said: Off course we slept on the floor! She was more focused on the jobs she had to get, on how to pay the rent; and we were like: Are you kidding!, the carpet was so stinky!, because that’s what we were living as kids,” he remembered laughing. All of this, according to Kishi, allowed “Los Lobos” to restore the story of his childhood, and opened an emotional healing process. “Little by little I

ENGLISH Some of her first works along those lines were two bilingual exhibits in 2013 for The Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum. They were “Gateways/Portales,” which explored the experiences of Latin immigrants in Washington, D.C., Baltimore and some parts of North Carolina, and “Bridging the Americas,” a perspective on home and belonging between Panama and D.C.

BLACKNESS WITHIN LATINIDAD

Apart from her work at Smithsonian museums, Curtis is the founder of Black Latinas Know, a collective of Black Latin academics and creators dedicated to studying the intersection of race between Latinidad and Blackness. “We acknowledge that our Black womanhood and scholarship intersect to offer a particular view of race, our disciplines, and society which is intimately tied to our own experience.” the collective explains on its website. The objective of the organization is to acknowledge the voices of Black Latin women as an essential source of knowledge to understand how race works within Latinidad. “Overrepresentation by white or mixed Latinas/o/x in academic tradition about race replicates the same racial exclusions that are intended to be addressed,” the collective states.

OTHERS PAVING THE WAY

Other Latina curators in noteworthy positions in museums within the U.S. are E. Carmen Ramos, a Dominican Afro-Latina, appointed in 2021 as chief curatorial and conservation officer of the National Gallery of Art (NGA) in Washington D.C. She is the first woman and person of color holding that position. Last year in July, Puerto Rican Marcela Guerrero was also promoted to associate curator of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Guerrero is planning upcoming exhibits with Puerto Rican artists, and performance artist Martine Gutierrez. Latina writer and curator Elizabeth Ferrer is also the vice president of contemporary art in BRIC, a center for experimental art in Brooklyn, NY. Last year, Ferrer published Latinx Photography in the United States: A Visual History, a wide selection of photographers that have covered the daily life and human rights of Latin communities in the United States. Lastly, a new exhibit at the Denver Art Museum dedicated to ‘La Malinche’ has put Latin historian Terezita Romo in the spotlight. It is the first exhibit that explores the history and significance of this legendary Indigenous woman, who had a child with Spanish conqueror Hernan Cortes. z

n Dec. 7 of 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor by surprise. The empire wanted to keep the United States’ Pacific Fleet from operating in the colonies of the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands and the United States itself in South East Asia. Three-hundred and fifty-three Japanese aircrafts, bombers and torpedo bombers took off to destroy three cruisers, three destroyers, one training vessel and one minelayer. At the end of the operation they were congratulated by Spanish Dictator Francisco Franco. The attack shook the American people and marked the entry point of the United States into the Second World War. Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy also declared war to the United States. Spain did not go that far, but joined forces with the Japanese empire. The Japanese turned to Spain for war materials because the latter declared itself non-belligerent, even though it was under a fascist regime. The Spanish colony in the Philippines mediated so the Japanese could occupy the archipelago.

The Spanish Foreign Affairs Minister, Ramón Serrano Suner, also dedicated himself to representing and defending the rights of the Japanese living in the United States. They were suffering from a xenophobia similar to the one Russians suffer today, with their farms being assaulted and losing jobs in droves. l 7 de diciembre de 1941, Japón atacó por sorpresa Pearl Harbor.

TIP HISTÓRICO ENGLISH for their identity and not their ideology. During the Second World War, many had their bank accounts blocked, which forced them to abandon the East Coast. But that pat on the back and eventual collaboration with the Spanish did not last for long. When the Philippines was occupied by Japan, the latter destroyed buildings and even killed Spaniards who resided there and had helped them take over. Reality then hit the Francoist dictatorship, which stopped defending and protecting the Japanese in the United States.

FRANCO AGAINST JAPAN

On April of 1943, Franco decided to partly abandon his neutrality in the conflict and appear close to the Allied Forces of WWII, insisting that Japan needed to

be beat because they were “barbarians.” When the Philippines managed to free itself from the Japanese empire, Franco congratulated the president of the Philippines this time, Jose Paciano Laurel. To avoid an attack from the United States, Franco’s Spain released an official note against Japan and even delivered military material, namely ships to go on the offensive against the Japanese empire. The Axis Powers, Germany and Italy, also began their downward spiral, and Francoism was in a fight to survive. Its strategy was to openly show itself as an enemy to Japan. Franco’s hand was a good one. Once the war ended, the Allies put aside attacking the Spanish dictatorship and instead promoted democracy. Spanish fascism stayed in power until Franco’s death in November of 1975. z

THE IMPORTANCE OF TAX PLANNING HAVING A PLAN WHEN FILING TAXES, PARTICULARLY AS IT RELATES TO RETIREMENT, CAN LEAD TO MAXIMUM BENEFITS. TENER UN PLAN A LA HORA DE HACER LA DECLARACIÓN DE IMPUESTOS, EN PARTICULAR EN LO QUE SE REFIERE A LA JUBILACIÓN, PUEDE LLEVAR A MÁXIMOS BENEFICIOS.

ach year during tax season, it’s important to have a plan and tax strategy to ensure things run smoothly. To prepare an effective tax plan, there are many options to consider. Lisa Borrelli, a CPA and wealth planner at West Capital Management, provides five important options to consider when developing an effective tax strategy. She noted that a valuable component to tax planning is to set retirement goals, and begin implementing them while considering the following options: 1. Efficient Contributions: Comprehensive tax planning provides an avenue to maximize today’s savings while creating income for tomorrow. Roth 401(k) and Roth IRAs are great tools to save for future retirement, and are particularly beneficial for young workers early in their careers. 2. Roth Conversions: For workers who don’t anticipate a dip in income until the early retirement years, Roth conversions are a great way to smooth income, slightly increasing tax brackets in the present time while lowering tax brackets in the future. 3. Additional Retirement Contributions: For individuals who see availability for additional retirement contributions based on their goals, there are other options. They include Self-Employed Pension Plans (SEP), Profit Sharing Plans, and Nondeductible and Deductible IRA contributions. 4. 529 Plans: This involves moving assets to young children, which can

ENGLISH result in more tax. 529 Plans allow assets to be gifted to children with growth and exempt from Federal tax if the funds are used for qualified education expenses. 5. Maximize Tax-efficient Charitable Giving: Qualified Charitable Deductions provide a reduction to ordinary income, which carries a greater impact in tax reduction than charitable giving. When taxpayers are not required to draw from an IRA, it can be more beneficial than cash. For small businesses relying on a tax refund to keep cash flowing, there are also some steps that can be taken to minimize the impact of a refund delay. Jeremy Shackleford, senior vice president and director of small business sales at WSFS Bank, suggests the following: • Get Started Now: The earlier you start your taxes, the better your chances are of avoiding long-term refund delays. • Have Everything Ready: Having all your financial documentation ready can go a long way in ensuring the tax filing can occur on time. • Have Your Financial House in Order: For businesses that rely on tax refunds, options such as small business lines of credit, small business express loans and small business credit cards can be useful in helping bridge the gap between when taxes are filed and when the refund arrives. While every individual’s and business’ financial and tax situations are unique, these tips can go a long way in ensuring that minimal issues occur throughout the tax season. z

government official who violated its terms. In September 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Act, making it the first time legislation to preserve abortion rights under federal law would have been enacted. The right to have an abortion prior to fetal viability, typically around 23 or 24 weeks, has been protected under the Constitution since the Supreme Court’s 1973 ruling in Roe v. Wade.

A DIRE FUTURE

In December, the Supreme Court signaled its willingness to undermine Roe v. Wade and permit a Mississippi ban on abortion after 15 weeks. The court’s decision in that case is expected in late Spring 2022. groups and the White House itself have condemned the vote. On Tuesday, March 1, White House press secretary Jen Psaki released a statement responding to the blocked bill. “It is extremely disappointing that Senate Republicans blocked passage of the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would strengthen health care access and codify constitutional rights affirmed half a century ago by Roe v. Wade and in subsequent Supreme Court precedent,” Psaki wrote. Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth also pointed to further implications of not protecting Roe, especially the impact on women of color. “By failing to advance the Women’s Health Protection Act, Senate Republicans are depriving millions of women, especially low-income women, and women of color, of healthcare they need when they need it. I refuse to let my daughters grow up in a world with fewer rights than I had, and I won’t stop working to codify Roe v. Wade,” said Duckworth. z

made amends with a lot of my thoughts because you start to understand the reasons for things when your points of view change as an adult. My perspective as a child was what shaped my memory. Now I understand the difficulties that my mother went through, and not at a superficial level. I made peace with many things of my childhood and with my mother, and we do have a good relationship, but I understood the things that she did because she was very young when we migrated, she was only 24 years old. At 24, I was finishing my cinema studies not knowing exactly what to do; while my mother, at that same age, already had two kids and she was fighting and making a living in a different country.” What a good model and how tenacious his mother figure was were not the only things that captivated Kishi as “Los Lobos” was taking shape, also he reflected on the importance of solidarity. “We people who migrate need to create a community and be empathic. That is key to go through the migration process of taking root and uprooting, the trauma of separating from your roots to create a new home. Giving a hand to your neighbor is the only way to survive and live the experience in the best way” he said. “As migrant children, it helped a lot what my mother did, but also what people did to help us. There were mean, evil people, but also good people. I remember both, and you choose which one you want to become. We can make important changes by helping, supporting each other with little things, it’s not necessary to be pompous,” he added. It is all very interesting because it is not necessary to judge in order to tell a story,” he said. After all they lived at the beginning of the project, their trips to Santa Ana, their long conversations with other migrants and casting about 1,000 Mexican children, filming was set in motion in 2014, and post-production was ready five years later. It premiered between 2020 and 2021 due to the conditions imposed due to the pandemic.

MIGRATION FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE

The director defined “Los Lobos” is an unconventional narration of Latin American migration, which the public may not be used to. “While the movie has a harsh side, it also has a sweet side, which are the children, and that is not a trendy topic. Making this film was a punk act within Latin American cinema, because it is filled with tenderness, empathy and resilience. I wanted to make a movie without minding being too dark, but not fearing light either.” “Los Lobos” is available for Latin America and the United States through HBO Max, and on the streaming platform Filmin in Spain. As for Samuel Kishi Leopo, he does not stop. He is introducing his new animated short film “El Año del Radio” [The Year of the Radio] in international festivals, one of them if the Miami Film Festival. He is also working on the script and production of another three full-length films that he expects will surprise the spectators, very soon, in the movie theaters. z

Filled with tenderness, but far from stereotypes, the film, directed by Mexican Samuel Kishi Leopo, is an ode to taking roots, uprooting, memories, forgiveness, and empathy.

Although it has produced tons of information, the updated tables with the number of Hispanics by nationality do not appear.

S

ince I saw in January that the Mexican American mathematician Robert Luis Santos became the 26th director of the U.S. Census Bureau, I have been confident he may remedy the mistake made when the federal agency deleted the American FactFinder search engine. For an older adult like me, with limited cybernetic knowledge was easy for years to find essential statistics about the Hispanic Latino Population in the country. With the American FactFinder advanced search function, I could find tables with the numbers of Hispanics by each nationality in the decennial counting from 1990 to 2010. Likewise, I found the estimates of the American Community Survey year by year of people of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban and Dominican origin. The statistics of Central Americans, country by country, South Americans, country by country, and Spaniards were easy to locate. I knew how many Colombians lived in North Carolina, Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte, and the Town of Cornelius, where I reside. I was born in Colombia, but I have been a North Carolinian since 2001. Furthermore, my journalistic profession made me the point of reference in Charlotte for Bolivians, Guatemalans, or Dominicans about their numbers in states, counties, and municipalities. I could compare North Carolina’s percentage of Argentinians or Costa Ricans with their numbers in Pennsylvania or Illinois. With the American FactFinder search engine adding tables was very simple. Yet I made an effort to learn the agency’s latest virtual structures and methods. I watched video tutorials, read information, consulted Census Public Information Officers. Still, I don’t master the new system. When I look in the agency’s federal web page for Hispanic or Latino Origin by Specific Origin, I don’t find the 2020 Census statistics. Two years have passed since the decennial counting. The 2020 Census has produced tons of information from a variety of topics. Nevertheless, the updated tables

ENGLISH with the numbers of Hispanics by each nationality do not appear anywhere. Instead, a table emerges from the 2019 American Community Survey, 1-Year Estimates. An already unveiled three-year-old statistic before the decennial counting. I believe data about Hispanic nationalities must be a priority due to the Latino population’s massive increment reflected in the 2020 Census. As part of his duties, Director Santos writes a blog. The figures of Mexicans, Caribbeans, Central Americans, South Americans, and Spaniards may be an exciting subject for the first Latino head in the history of the U.S. Census. Santos was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. Par excellence Latino City and State. z
