T

he main topic of this issue is Rebecca Rhynhart’s work, Controller of Philadelphia, who entered her second term. In her first years, she re-defined the scope of the Controller’s Office, beyond just reviewing the finances of the government.

“I started to just see a lot of other things that weren’t running properly, that I needed to use my voice for”, she said.

And it is precisely the increase in homicide rates in the city one of those things. “People are losing their kids and this should be an issue that every day, city leaders are focusing on with urgency to fix,” she said. This critique, to which she further adds a lack of urgency and efficiency to find solutions, comes with actions. Her office has created maps of violence since 2016, with legal information, and data about race, age and gender of the victims.

In 2022, the Office will be focusing on the Police Department and the Medical Examiner’s, among others.

In the Culture section of this issue, we remember Cuban artist Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball’s husband; an unforgettable couple in one the shows with one of the highest audience in the 50`s: “I love Lucy.”

‘Being the Ricardos’, which recently premiered, recreates the lives of Lucy and Arnaz in a culminating moment of their careers as artists at the time of the series. Nicole Kidman plays the role of Lucille Ball, and Javier Bardem, Desi Arnaz’s; who after arriving to the United States, became part of Xavier Cugat’s Orchestra, a Spanish musician that arrived to Cuba when he was only five. z

onna L. Allie, founder and president of Team Clean, Inc. will be the newest recipient of the Paradigm Award, the most prestigious award for businesswomen in the Greater Philadelphia region.

Throughout her nearly 40 years as an entrepreneur, Allie has developed a reputation as one of the region’s premier female business leaders.

However, getting into the cleaning business is not what Allie meant to do. She originally went to Wilberforce University for sociology and vocational rehabilitation. She planned to attend graduate school afterward. Her plans changed when she had her daughter soon after graduating and had to move back to her hometown of Bryn Mawr, PA. Allie was on public assistance when she started cleaning houses for the rich people in the area. As word spread about her skills and friendly demeanor, she began to bring on more women to help with the demand, and Team Clean — her Philadelphia-based janitorial services company — was born.

eading up to the end of 2021, pressure and quite frankly, outright disgust was being leveled at the Biden administration for its

handling of the student loan debt crisis in the country.

Coming into office, Biden had promised

generations

of

younger

Americans that he would forgive a portion of their student loan debt during his presidency.

He still has three years to do that, but his administration has been eerily silent on a previous campaign proposal that would forgive $10,000 in student loan debt per borrower.

Advocates want as much as $50,000 per borrower considering the more than $1.6 trillion in total student loan debt, but at this point, something is still better than nothing for many.

BIDEN’S EFFORTS SO FAR

To this point, all that’s been granted to all borrowers is more time. It started by extending the previous student loan debt moratorium set by former President Donald Trump to Jan. 31, 2022.

With that deadline looming amid the 2021 holiday season, Biden once again extended the moratorium to May 2022 to the relief of millions of student loan borrowers.

Still, it’s only delayed what feels like the inevitable return of monthly payments with interest for those same millions.

But that’s not to say the administration has done nothing in terms of forgiveness.

The two major ones — disability discharge and the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) — have forgiven a total of $8.5 billion to this point.

Disability discharge erases the student loan debt of those with permanent disabilities. The program has been notoriously difficult to navigate and achieve actual relief. Cardona’s efforts have been to simplify the process, and it has reportedly helped at least 370,000 borrowers to this point forgive up to $6.5 billion in student loan debt.

PSLF allows those with careers in public service for 10 years to have their loans forgiven, but like disability discharge, the program is stingy and complicated. Using its pandemic powers, the administration has loosened some of those requirements and restrictions to make it more accessible. So far, the administration said it has relieved $2 billion in debt since the changes.

Despite the efforts, they have still been extremely small compared to the overall amount of student loan debt — in the trillions of dollars — across the country.

s much as many went into the past holiday season hoping it would be a reversion back to times before COVID-19 changed the world as we know it, the virus once again reared its ugly, deadly and infectious head.

This time it came in the form of the Omicron variant, the new mutation on the block of COVID-19 mutations that spreads faster than the already extremely infectious Delta variant.

ANOTHER PANDEMIC RECORD

It resulted in a 2021 Christmas and New Years stretch that saw the U.S. hit upwards of 300,000 new cases a day for a record amid the now two-year pandemic. Many cities, including Philadelphia, hit records for infections in a day, and again, long-planned celebrations were canceled to try to curb the spread.

A big portion of Omicron’s infections are also breakthrough cases of the virus, meaning a growing number of those catching COVID have been vaccinated.

It’s still not the majority of cases, especially the ones that end up in the hospital and dead, but the recommendations from the CDC are now to receive a booster dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine no matter whether it was one of the two or Johnson & Johnson that administered an individual’s first dose or doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

As of now, just over a third of the

ENGLISH fully vaccinated U.S. population has received a booster dose.

When it comes to full vaccination — a step below getting a booster — more than 200 million Americans have now been fully vaccinated, or over 60% of the entire U.S. population.

The CDC has also reduced the amount of days one needs to quarantine in the event of COVID infection from 10 to five days. While infecting faster and showing symptoms earlier, initial observations of Omicron show it dissipating much faster, especially in vaccinated individuals, than previous variants of COVID-19.

In South Africa, where Omicron was initially found, the wave in cases it caused early in December has already shown signs of slowing down.

Whether that happens in the U.S. is yet to be seen.

Even with full vaccination, Omicron has shown an ability to get around the initial antibodies. Boosters have shown to provide the extra layer of protection needed to avoid infection in most cases.

That’s not to say being boosted means no infection. Like discussions earlier in the pandemic around full vaccination, they don’t completely prevent infection, but reduce the chances of that infection becoming lethal.

There are now also two pills from Pfizer and Merck that will work to reduce lethality further after infection, but they are also not the be-all-end-all for the COVID-19 pandemic.

On January 6th, it was a year from the attack to the Capitol by Donald Trump’s followers, which shook the United States democracy to its core. On January 7th, Jorge Fernández Menéndez, a columnist of newspaper ‘Excelsior’, wrote: “The assault to the Capitol was an attempted coup d’état, and it showed how dangerous and lacking of democratic sense is the man who is still leading in great part the Republican Party, and who aspires to come back to power in 2024.” He quotes some of the revelations of “Peril”, a book by Bob Woodward—who uncovered along Carl Bernstein the Watergate scandal—and Robert Costa. He says: “the most notable (…) is the role that played the military commanders to defend the democracy of their own boss. It is of particular significance the transcription of the conversation held by the leader of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Pelosi (…) was certain that Trump, to remain in power, could provoke a war, even a nuclear war. (…) general Milley (…) called in two occasions his Chinese counterpart, General Li Zuocheng (…). The well-founded fear of General Milley was that China, anticipating Trump would attack its country, would decide to launch a preventive attack, or that Trump himself would trigger a widespread provocation.”

‘ASSAULT TO THE CAPITOL, A DEMOCRACY BLACKOUT IN THE UNITED STATES’ Commentator Marcelo Cantelmi, in an article published on January 6th, concludes about the events at the Capitol stating that: “the attack irresponsibly favored by Trump weakened the leadership of the USA, and its image as a beacon of democracy.” “The dramatic episode, retrograde, with nationalist mobs rioting the Parliament in Washington, causing destruction and deaths, sought to block the confirmation of Joe Biden’s victory in the elections of November 2020. That purpose wasn’t fulfilled. It did, however, successfully create a wound in the institutional model that the United States is based upon; especially since the second post-war era, in order to maintain its global leadership. The importance of this observation and the extent of the damages are fundamental as it exposes the weakness trauma inherited to the administration of the democrat government. The new administration has overreacted to get away from that specter trying to hide it in the town of republican opposition; not taking it for what it is, a sign of decay that involves the whole political structure. The real dimension of what was conjured that day is more clearly understood with the subsequent wave of rules promoted by republicans to limit votes from Latin or black minorities, and in doing so creating a disproportionate concept of a qualified voter.”

THE WEAKNESS OF MULTILATERALISM Diego García Sayan, an analyst of El País from Spain, published on January 6th a text titled “The ¿Highest? of the State,” on international uncertainty for the year ahead. It points out that: “While during the cold war debate and efforts before the United Nations Security Council deserved prioritary attention in the news and in analysts’ perspectives; today, they are almost absent from the daily news reports.” He says that the world today “is luckily not about to enter a world conflagration or ending one. But, being conservative, the sources of uncertainty are many and scheduled meetings are too. A key topic to take into account is the weakening of multilateralism in different areas; global and regional. (…) in fact, the countries (all) seem to prioritize international plans and strategies with unilateral actions, disconnected from multilateral consensus, which weakens their capacity to act and negotiate. For instance, there has not been any progress in the design and management of urgent extraordinary regional funding plans, like the ones set up in Europe and USA. hen Rebecca Rhynhart was first elected as Philadelphia’s City Controller in 2018, it came almost nine years after she made the switch to government work following a career on Wall Street.

In New York, Rhynhart worked with municipalities to assess their creditworthiness, and saw first hand just how behind the curve local governments were with any sort of process, but especially those involving finances.

She wanted to change that to make a government that works better for all people, and that goal has driven her career ever since. In the process, she has also steadily ascended the government ladder.

In regards to the backlash, she did say in another recent interview with The Philadelphia Citizen that it did catch her off guard at first, but she’s since learned to take it as part of the job in politics.

“I don’t really care if anyone criticizes me for not staying in my lane because I don’t really care about lanes,” Rhynhart told AL DÍA. “I’m gonna do my job — the financial audit function — and I do it well, and then I’m also gonna lean in on other issues.”

Rhynhart first left her Wall Street job and came to Philadelphia in 2008 to work as the City Treasurer under Mayor Michael Nutter. Fourteen years later, on Jan. 3, 2022, she was sworn into her second fouryear term as Philadelphia City Controller.

In recognizing the achievement, Rhynhart quoted the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to encapsulate her goals.

“Fight for the things you care about but do it in a way that will lead others to join you,” Ginsburg said at a 2015 Harvard luncheon honoring her with the Radcliffe Medal from the college’s Radcliffe Institute.

The institute was founded to make the same Ivy-League Harvard education accessible to women (who were barred from the university at the time of its founding), and the award recognizes women that have had transformational impacts on society.

It’s the sort of impact Rhynhart often talks about with whoever she can about what she wants for the future of Philadelphia.

“I think there’s a lot of entrenchment in Philadelphia politics, and that needs to be broken up so that government works for the people,” she said in a recent interview with AL DÍA.

FIGHTING AGAINST GUN VIOLENCE

An issue that stuck out early and is now a crisis in Philadelphia many equate to the coronavirus is gun violence.

Since 2017, when Rhynhart was elected, Philadelphia has seen an annual increase in gun violence homicides.

In 2020 — the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic — the city saw homicides jump from the already-high 356 from 2019, to 499.

In 2021, it hit the highest amount on record of 562. The last time the city even touched 500 was 1990, the third year of then-mayor Wilson Goode’s second term.

The issue today hits home for Rhynhart.

“It’s so horrible as a resident of the city, as a mom,” she said. “People are losing their kids and this should be an issue that every day, city leaders are focusing on with urgency to fix.”

REIMAGINING THE CITY CONTROLLER

To begin that process, Rhynhart was instrumental over her first term in redefining the scope of what operations the City Controller’s Office analyzed.

Before her, what many would say about the office’s role is to check the finances of the government and bring to light any discrepancies.

At first that’s what happened, and Rhynhart’s office found that $33 million from the city’s main cash account had been “misplaced,” as the follow-up news stories often characterized the massive hole.

The exposure ruffled feathers, and that too would become a theme as Rhynhart’s office expanded beyond auditing and investigating just the financial practices of the city. She had come into office with an already expanded view that vowed to look at behavioral health and the parking authority, but as the issues multiplied, so did the job.

“I started to just see a lot of other things that weren’t running properly, that I needed to use my voice for,” said Rhynhart.

PORTADA To find potential solutions, Rhynhart’s office initially looked outside of Philadelphia in 2019. That year, her office released a report that analyzed how cities like Oakland, California and New Orleans, Louisiana approached gun violence prevention and eventually significantly reduced their murder rates. Subsequent findings were then proposed for use combating Philadelphia’s growing crisis.

The City Controller’s Office under Rhynhart has also become known for its capacity to visualize data in digestible formats, and gun violence is no different.

Her office has created maps of all the city’s incidents of gun violence (fatal and nonfatal) from 2016 through 2022. Data compiled shows the race, age, and gender of the victims along with information about whether a court case ever occurred or was scheduled for the incident, meaning a perpetrator was caught.

At its core duty of budget analysis, at the end of the Summer, Rhynhart’s office also showed the mayor and City Council the harsh reality of its record $155 million going towards gun violence prevention efforts. In a report released in August, it was revealed that only $33 million — or just 21% — of the $155 million would actually fund short-term efforts, meaning they would combat the here and now of what ended up as 562 homicides in 2021.

On the politics side, Rhynhart also threw in with Councilmember Jamie Gauthier to call out Mayor Jim Kenney’s office over its response to the crisis, labeling it as slow and lacking the urgency required to have an impact.

EMPHASIZING URGENCY AND BOLDNESS

For many who join the government from a career in the private sector, a common gripe is around the lack of urgency and efficiency when it comes to operations of all kinds. Despite being in government for 14 years now, Rhynhart is no different on that front, and demands a change of attitude in leadership to get the change she sees as possible for the city.

“Because the issues were not fixed with a certain degree of boldness and real determination about wanting to change course to do what works, the problems have just gotten worse,” said Rhynhart.

“These aren’t things that you can tackle by just making some changes around the edges.”

And gun violence isn’t the only issue where her office has highlighted a perceived lack of urgency.

LITTLE DIVERSITY PROGRESS

Take the city’s overall efforts to diversify its workforce that is charged with delivering services to residents.

Since Rhynhart became City Controller in 2018, her office has put out an annual report analyzing the hiring practices of all of the city’s departments. To get a good gauge of the practices, the office looks at the city’s exempt workforce, which constitute employees hired outside of the city’s civil service system, meaning there is much more discretion from leadership and other decision-makers about who gets hired and fired.

In 2017, Mayor Jim Kenney’s administration created Exempt Employee Hiring Guidelines to guide departments on the best hiring practices to prioritize and increase diversity.

To sum up the last four years of exempt hiring diversity progress, Rhynhart had this to offer: “What we’ve seen is very modest improvement. There’s such slight improvement that it’s not getting at it to the degree that it truly should,” she said.

The latest exempt employee report from 2020 also showed a downward trend in diversity compared to previous years.

For one, it hired no new high-level Hispanic staff (those making over $90,000-a-year) and fewer Black executives.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been the major scapegoat for the Mayor’s Office in light of the shortcoming, but Rhynhart again prefers to look at leadership for answers.

“The pandemic is difficult, it’s a pandemic. But that’s also when true leadership emerges,” she said. “There should still be some ability to get diverse candidates.”

Another audit of note includes a map of trash pickup consistency across the city, showing how some neighborhoods (like Center City and Northeast Philly) have on-time trash pickup 90 to 95% of the time, while others (like West, Northwest and South Philly) are lucky to get between 65 and 75% on-time trash pickup — “which is not good by the way,” according to Rhynhart.

The other to make headlines in the last two years was an investigation into how the

Philadelphia Police Department responded to the civil uprisings following the police murder of George Floyd over the Summer of 2020. It specifically revealed how Commissioner Danielle Outlaw sought to use tear gas to disperse a group of protesters blocking I-76. Rather than disperse the crowd that was trapped and blockaded on the expressway, their frantic escapes captured on news cameras and social media brought international ire to the city.

2022 AND BEYOND

Looking forward to 2022, the police department will once again be a focus of Rhynhart’s office, as it takes a dive into how its $750 million budget is spent. There

is also a pending investigation into the Medical Examiner’s office in the aftermath of debacle around the unearthed MOVE remains that were thought destroyed. Both investigations were requested by City Council.

Beyond that, Rhynhart said her office stands ready to initiate audits or investigations for whatever comes up. That remains the focus, she said, despite speculation of her running for another office her own has often called out.

“I think that I want to have the biggest impact that I can have, and I do love my job,” said Rhynhart. “So we’ll see what happens.” z

The pandemic is difficult, it’s a pandemic. But that’s also when true leadership emerges.

REIMAGINAR EL ROL DE CONTRALORA DE LA CIUDAD

Rhynhar fue una pieza clave para iniciar el proceso de redefinir el alcance de las operaciones analizadas por la Contraloría. Antes de ella, lo que muchos hubiesen dicho del rol es que era el de revisar las finanzas del gobierno e identificar cualquier discrepancia.

Así era en un comienzo, hasta que en la administración de Rhynhart se encontró que se habían “asignado erróneamente” $33 millones de la cuenta de caja de la ciudad, lo que en las noticias caracterizaron como un hueco monumental.

El descubrimiento causó disgusto, lo cual también se volvió una constante. Las funciones de la Contraloría de Rhynhart se ampliaron por fuera de los límites de auditar e investigar solamente las prácticas financieras de la ciudad. Había tomado su cargo con una visión ya bas-

“Me empecé a dar cuenta de que muchas otras cosas no estaban funcionando bien y para las cuales debía usar mi voz”, dijo Rhynhart.

Con respecto a las reacciones que generó, dijo en otra entrevista reciente con The Philadelphia Citizen que sí la tomó desprevenida al principio, pero ha aprendido a asumirlo como parte del trabajo en la política.

“Realmente no me importa si me critican por no quedarme en mi ‘carril’, por-

que no le pongo atención a los carriles”, le dijo Rhynhart a AL DÍA. “Voy a hacer mi trabajo -en su función de auditor financiero- y lo hago bien, pero también voy a trabajar por otros problemas”.

LA LUCHA CONTRA LA ARMAS

Un problema que había surgido desde antes y que se convirtió en una crisis en Filadelfia para casi igualar al coronavirus es la violencia provocada por armas.

Desde el 2017, cuando Rhynhart fue elegida, Filadelfia ha visto un incremento anual de los homicidios con armas.

En el 2020 -primer año de la pandemia del COVID-19-, la ciudad vio dispararse la tasa de homicidio, que ya era alta, de

PORTADA publicó un reporte en el cual se analizaba cómo ciudades como Oakland, California, Nueva Orleans y Luisiana abordaban la prevención de la violencia por armas y posteriormente redujeron sus tasas de asesinatos. Se propuso utilizar los hallazgos subsecuentes para combatir la creciente crisis del tema en Filadelfia.

Durante el mandato de Rhynhart, la Contraloría de la ciudad también ha sido reconocida por su capacidad de visualizar los datos en formatos digeribles y no hay diferencia cuando se trata de la violencia por armas.

Su despacho ha creado mapas de todos los incidentes de violencia por armas de la ciudad (fatales y no fatales) desde 2016 hasta 2022. Los datos compilados muestran la raza, la edad y el género de las víctimas, así como información acerca de si hubo un caso judicial o se programó uno por el incidente, es decir si se capturó al atacante.

Al final del verano, en su deber fundamental de análisis de presupuesto, el despacho de Rhynhart también les mostró al alcalde y al Concejo de la ciudad la cruda realidad de que había destinado la suma récord de $155 millones a esfuerzos de prevención contra la violencia por armas. En un reporte publicado en agosto se reveló que solo $33 millones -el 21%- financiarían esfuerzos a corto plazo, lo que significa que combatirían el aquí y ahora de lo que terminó en 562 homicidios en el 2021.

Por el lado político, Rhynhart también se acompañó del congresista Jamie Gauthier para acusar a la oficina del alcalde Jim Kenney por su respuesta a la crisis, tildándola de lenta y carente del sentido de urgencia que se requiere para tener un impacto.

356 casos en 2019 a 499. En el 2021, llegó a su cifra más alta registrada con 562 casos. La última vez que la ciudad rozó los 500 casos fue en 1990, durante el tercer año del segundo periodo del entonces alcalde Wilson Goode.

Hoy, el tema toca una fibra sensible para Rhynhart. “Es horrible como residente de la ciudad y como mamá”, dijo.

“La gente está perdiendo a sus hijos, y debería ser un tema en el que los líderes de esta ciudad se deberían enfocar todos los días para solucionarlo con urgencia”.

Para encontrar soluciones, el despacho de Rhynhart buscó inicialmente fuera de Filadelfia en 2019. Ese año se JANUARY 12 - 19, 2022

ÉNFASIS EN LA URGENCIA Y LA AUDACIA

Una queja recurrente de muchos de los que llegan a una carrera en el sector público desde el sector privado es la falta de urgencia y eficiencia en operaciones de todo tipo. A pesar de estar en el gobierno por ya 14 años, Rhynhart no es diferente, y exige un cambio de actitud en el liderazgo para lograr el cambio que le parece posible en la ciudad.

“Por no haber arreglado los problemas con cierto nivel de audacia y determinación real de cambiar el rumbo hacia cosas que funcionen, los problemas han empeorado”, dijo Rhynhart. “No son co-

sas que se puedan resolver solo con hacer algunos cambios superficiales”.

POCO PROGRESO EN CUANTO A DIVERSIDAD No ha sido la violencia por armas el único problema en el que su despacho ha puesto en evidencia lo que se percibe como falta de sentido de urgencia. Por ejemplo, los esfuerzos generales de la ciudad por diversificar su personal encargado de prestar servicios a los residentes.

Desde que Rhynhart se convirtió en contralora en 2018, su despacho ha emitido un reporte anual donde se analizan las prácticas de contratación de todos los departamentos de la ciudad. Para tener una idea precisa de estas prácticas, el despacho se enfoca en la fuerza laboral exenta de la ciudad, conformada por empleados que se contratan por fuera del sistema de servicio civil de la ciudad, lo que quiere decir que hay mayor discrecionalidad por parte de líderes y otros dirigentes sobre a quién se contrata y se despide.

En 2017, la administración del alcalde Jim Kenney creó la Norma para la Contratación de Empleados Exentos para guiar a los departamentos en unas mejores prácticas de contratación que prioricen y aumenten la diversidad.

Para resumir el progreso que ha tenido la diversidad de los empleados exentos en los últimos cuatro años, Rhynhart dijo: “Lo que hemos visto es una mejora modesta. Es tan mínima la mejora que no está produciendo el efecto que debería”.

El último informe de empleados exentos de 2020 también mostró una tendencia a la baja de la diversidad en comparación con años anteriores. En particular, no se contrató personal hispano de alto nivel (que ganan más de $90.000 al año) y menos aun ejecutivos negros.

La pandemia del COVID-19 ha sido el chivo expiatorio de la alcaldía al justificar las dificultades, pero Rhynhart prefiere dirigir las preguntas a los líderes.

“La pandemia es difícil, es una pandemia, pero es cuando surge el verdadero liderazgo”, afirmó. “Aun así deben, existir las habilidades para contratar candidatos diversos”.

2022 Y MÁS ALLÁ

De cara al 2022, el Departamento de Policía será una vez más uno de los focos de atención del despacho de Rhynhart, ya que se está investigando cómo se gasta su presupuesto de 750 millones de dólares.

Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y de Acha III went from being an aristocrat in his native Cuba to a poorly paid Singer and guitar player in the famous Xavier Cugat’s orchestra, in the 30’s, and later, to TV mogul in the 50`s.

Javier Bardem and Nicole Kidman have the leading roles of the latest premier in Amazon Prime: ‘Being the Ricardos’. The movie tells the story of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, the real life couple that played Ricky and Lucy Ricardo in the series “I love Lucy” in the 50’s.

The feature film narrates the crisis that they went through when Lucille Ball was accused by a gossip magazine of being a communist, something that in the conservative Hollywood of the mid-20th century would signify the end of one of the most famous actresses of the time.

Arnaz was the son of Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y Alberni II, who was the Mayor of Santiago de Cuba for ten years, his uncle was a chief of police, and his great-grandfather was appointed by Queen Isabella II herself as city Mayor in the XIX century.

It could be assumed that his destiny was to continue with the Caribbean aristocratic heritage, had he and his family not been obliged to escape the island in 1933 during Sergeants’ Revolt, led by then Sergeant Fulgencio Batista, whom 30 years later would be overthrown by Fidel Castro.

CULTURA ENGLISH Cugat’s orchestra, considered to be the father of Mambo. That was how he started his way to fame.

He appeared in movies and musicals in New York, started his own orchestra, made Americans dance to the rhythm of conga, and during the shooting of one of these movies he met Lucille Ball, who at the time was becoming a celebrity in Hollywood.

Arnaz and Ball got married in 1940. Each one continued with their careers; Ball as an actress and Arnaz as a singer. By 1950, they were both stars. That year, CBS offered Ball to take her radio series “My Favorite Husband” to television.

She accepted, under the condition that Arnaz had the main role, but the network was not completely into the idea of having a multi-ethnic couple on national TV. Later they created “Desilu”, their own production company, so they could work together.

‘I Love Lucy’ became an immediate success, and its audience could reach up to 32 million people per week, a record in that moment. For more than a decade, the couple reaped rewards during the golden age of TV. After ‘I Love Lucy’ ended, in 1956, Arnaz continued working as a producer in series like ‘Mission Impossible’, ‘Star Trek’ and ‘The Untouchables’, and also in his musical career.

Their marriage was one of the most famous and turbulent of Hollywood, until their divorce in 1960. Arnaz’s infidelity and his alcoholism were as known as his talent and success. After his divorce, Arnaz got married again, and moved to Baja California, where he lived until his death in 1986, from lung cancer.

Despite the difficulties in his marriage, the couple kept a special bond. Once, Time asked Arnaz how he would divide in different percentages the success of ‘I love Lucy’ among actors, production, scriptwriters…He answered: “give Lucy 90%, divide the rest among us.”

The last person to talk to Arnaz, two days before his death, was his ex-wife, Lucy. The couple’s daughter would remember years later that the last words they said to each other in that brief phone call were: “I love you.” z

t 11 in the morning of January 9th, the alarms went off in a 19-story building in the Bronx, in New York, due to a fire sparked by a malfunctioning electric heater, in a room of the second floor. 17 people died — 8 of them were children — and at least 32 were injured.

It is the worst blaze of the last 30 years.

About 200 firefighters got to the place to respond to the emergency that affected the building where most of its residents were Muslim.

Apparently, once the fire started, the residents of the apartment escaped leaving the doors open, which made the situation worse. Mayor Eric Adams urged to close to the door when this kind of situations present themselves in order to avoid a tragedy.

The firefighters found “victims in the stairways on every floor, many of them in cardiac or respiratory arrest,” said Daniel Nigro, commissioner of the New York City Fire Department. z

Al parecer, una vez se produjo el fuego, quienes vivían en el apartamento huyeron dejando la puerta abierta, lo que agravó la situación. Incluso, al referirse a lo ocurrido, el alcalde Eric Adams pidió cerrar las puertas ante este tipo de circunstancias para evitar tragedias.

he new year is here! Hopefully we are recharged from seeing our family and loved ones. For so many, it was the first time in two years we had the joy of visiting in person. Today, we start the year in earnest, and we must do so with a cautious mindset.

It isn’t news to say there is still uncertainty and unpredictability when it comes to Covid. Just as we thought we were emerging from the worst of it, the Omicron variant has been tearing through community after community, infecting people at an astonishing rate.

No one believes this is a time for full-on panic, but all that we have learned about fighting Covid still remains true.

Get vaccinated. If you have had both shots, get the booster. The science is clear: Vaccinated people have mild infections. Unvaccinated people are filling the hospitals beyond capacity. It’s that simple.

Remember to social distance. If you are indoors around a lot of people, put on a mask, preferably a surgical mask or N95. Be alert. It is how we keep ourselves, our families and the vulnerable members of our community safe.

What we do need to think about, however, is how our professional plans may be affected by so many unknown variables and possible challenges. We don’t know what will happen over the next month or so. But we do know there is no government support anymore, neither for PPE or for the funding that helped sustain many a business owner or independent worker. Here, too, there are things you can do to help assure your future. If you haven’t already, you must build contingency plans. Strategize how you need to adapt to changing circumstances, create safe workplaces, build new staffing models. The good news is that you can find help within the commu-

nity, where plenty of people are raising their hands to help.

Think now, make sure you have planned for a crisis, so you have the security of knowing you are prepared for all circumstances. I am not an alarmist, and I certainly don’t have a crystal ball, but I do know I would rather have a plan I never have to use than face a sudden storm unprotected. It isn’t worth the gamble.

And finally, we must all continue our hard work of supporting and advancing Latinos everywhere. Be conscious of the power of building networks. Proactive in supporting each other. We have not — and will not — let the pandemic stop us from moving forward, advancing the Hispanic agenda, balancing our concerns for today with our real needs for tomorrow.

At the Hispanic Leadership Summit, just a few weeks ago, the hundreds of people who participated from Hispanic organizations, NGOs and non-profits, as well as many participants from corporate America left with a sense of unity and purpose. But we also left with a very large and pressing to-do list. Despite the current uncertainty, we must remember our power in unity. Now is the time to convert the why we must act to what, how and who will make things happen. We cannot count on the uncertainty abating.

Being cautiously alert is how I fuel my optimism. Let’s control what we can. If we need to gather in small groups across cities to keep moving forward, let’s do so. l año nuevo está aquí! y ojala hayamos quedado recargados después de haber estado con nuestras familias y seres queridos. Para muchos de nosotros, fue la primera vez en dos años que tuvimos la dicha de visitarlos en persona. Hoy, comenzamos en serio, y debemos hacerlo con una mentalidad de prevención.

No es una nueva decir que es aún incierto e impredecible lo que pase con el covid.

Cuando pensábamos que ya habíamos salido de lo peor, apareció la variante ómicron sacudiendo una comunidad después de otra e infectando a las personas a una velocidad impresionante.

Ya pasó la época de entrar en total pánico, pero lo que hemos aprendido acerca de luchar contra la covid sigue vigente. Vacúnese. Si ya se aplicó las dos dosis, aplíquese el refuerzo. La ciencia es clara: la infección es leve en personas vacunadas, las no vacunadas están desbordando los hospitales; simple.

Recuerde guardar la distancia social.

Si está en un espacio cerrado rodeado de personas, colóquese la máscara, de preferencia una quirúrgica o N95. Esté alerta, así nos cuidamos a nosotros mismos, a nuestras familias y a los miembros vulnerables de nuestra comunidad.

Lo que sí debemos considerar es cómo nuestros planes profesionales se pueden ver afectados por tantas variables desconocidas y posibles retos. No sabemos qué vaya a suceder en un mes, pero sí sabemos que ya no habrá ayudas del gobierno para EPP ni para ayudar a los dueños de empresa o a trabajadores independientes a mantenerse en pie. Aun así, también hay cosas que puede hacer para ayudarlo a asegurar su futuro. Si no lo ha hecho, es necesario crear planes de contingencia. Cree estrategias que le permitan adaptarse a las diferentes circunstancias, a crear lugares de trabajo seguros y a crear nuevos modelos de contratación de personal. La buena noticia es que puede encontrar ayuda dentro de su comu-

nidad, donde hay muchas manos levantadas para ayudarlo.

Piense cómo; cerciórese de tener un plan para momentos de crisis, para que tenga la certeza de saber que está preparado para cualquier circunstancia. No soy una persona alarmista, pero tampoco tengo una bola de cristal, y prefiero tener un plan que quizás nunca use a enfrentarme a una tormenta de repente y sin protección. No vale la pena el riesgo.

Finalmente, todos debemos continuar nuestro trabajo duro de apoyar y hacer progresar a los latinos en todas partes.

Sea consiente del poder de construir redes de contactos y sea proactivo en poyarse entre sí. No hemos dejado (ni lo haremos) que la pandemia nos detenga de continuar adelante promoviendo la agenda hispana, sopesando nuestras inquietudes de hoy con las necesidades reales del mañana.

En el evento Hispanic Leadership Summit, hace unas semanas, los centenares de personas que participaron provenientes de organizaciones hispanas, ONG y organizaciones sin fines de lucro, así como del sector corporativo del país se fueron con un sentido de unidad y propósito; y también con una larga y apremiante lista de cosas por hacer. A pesar de la presente incertidumbre, debemos recordar nuestro poder en la unidad. Ahora, hay que convertir el porqué debemos actuar a qué, cómo y con quién hacer que las cosas pasen. No podemos contar con que la incertidumbre se desvanezca.

Estar alerta de manera precavida es como alimento mi optimismo. Controlemos lo que podemos. Si debemos unirnos en grupos pequeños en todas las ciudades para seguir adelante, hagámoslo. La incertidumbre inquieta, pero es también una oportunidad para inventar e innovar.

Sabemos trabajar con lo que tenemos, sabemos cómo seguir enfocándonos hacia el futuro. Sabemos cómo trabajar duro por nuestras familias y nuestra comunidad.

No se preocupe, pero sea precavido. Sigamos adelante, sé que lo podemos lograr.z
