Since 2007, farmers, craftspeople, and artisans from as far east as Pueblo to as far west as Palisade have been coming together in Salida’s Alpine Park to sell their goods to the community. To qualify as a vendor, everything must be produced from within Colorado. “A lot of these farmers and ranchers are very small. They don’t have stores or farmstands. This market is their home base. This is THE place local

Badfish co-owners Mike Harvey and Zack Hughes launched their Salida business in 2010, but Hughes has been shaping surfboards since 2007. Harvey remembers, “In the beginning, it was just two good friends having fun together on the river. As a whitewater park designer I was trying to figure out how to engineer structures [to] create surfable waves and Zack was in his garage trying to make surfboards... Badfish grew organically from that
desire.” Ultimately the duo began making boards to share with the world, riding the Colorado river surfing wave back when it all began. This year, Badfish opened its first retail shop at 148 E. First St. in Salida —locally known as the ‘blue building.’ “Salida is our home. This town is our family. A new way to fund local food, SOIL Sangre de Cristo offers zero percent interest loans to farmers, ranchers, and other food producers. The acronym SOIL stands for Slow Opportunities for Investing Locally. Investor members provide tax-deductible charitable donations to SOIL to fund the loans. Financial gifts of $250 or more allow the donor to participate in annual voting on loan recipients. When the loans are repaid, all funds revolve back into providing new loans within the community. A 501(c)3 nonprofit, SOIL members aim to build a healthy community by investing in supporting a local sustainable food future. Since SOIL Sangre de Cristo began in 2020, seven loans have been awarded. Long term, the aim of SOIL is to become a substantial lending resource for sustainable food production.
