EDITORIAL

In un momento come l’attuale in cui il riproporsi di cose normali può diventare notizia e credere che “tutto andrà bene” è realisticamente non così facile da accettare, il mondo degli sport equestri ha timidamente ripreso l’attività agonistica. La programmazione è più incerta che mai e continue cancellazioni, ovviamente, colpiscono in particolare il calendario dei grandi appuntamenti internazionali degli sport equestri. Il punto interrogativo ha priorità assoluta su tutti i programmi. La grande voglia di normalità è però confermata e nel nostro Paese i numeri della ripresa dei concorsi hanno fatto registrare iscrizioni superiori alla norma, così come rinnovo delle patenti per i tesserati. Segnali positivi per la Federazione Italiana Sport Equestri che ha recentemente rinnovato i suoi vertici con la conferma di Marco Di Paola alla presidenza per il secondo mandato. Il 2020 è arrivato all’autunno e Equestrian Time, con la sua quarta edizione, comincia ad avere una breve ma vissuta storia. Il positivo riscontro dei lettori, degli addetti ai lavori italiani e stranieri e delle aziende che ci supportano è un risultato di cui andiamo fieri e che ci gratifica immensamente, così come la recente decisione della Federazione Italiana Sport Equestri di inserire la nostra testata nel ristretto novero dei suoi media partner.

In times such as those we are currently experiencing, times in which even putting forward normal things again seems like news and in which believing that “everything will be fine” is realistically not all that easy, the world of equestrian sports has timidly resumed its competitive activities. Plans are more uncertain than ever before and obviously ongoing cancellations mainly affect the calendar for the great international equestrian events. It is question marks that have an absolute priority over all programmes, but a great desire for normality has been confirmed in Italy and the shows held recorded far more riders than expected and many more have renewed their membership with the federation. These are positive signs for the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation, which has recently renewed its leadership confirming Marco Di Paola as president for a second term. We are now in the autumn of 2020 and with its fourth issue Equestrian Time is beginning to have a brief but intense history. The positive feedback from readers, Italian and foreign experts and the companies that support us, is a result that is immensely gratifying and one we are proud of, as we are of the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation’s decision to include our magazine in the small number of its media partners.

Jody Vender ha un’esperienza in mercati alternativi di più di 40 anni. Nel 2008, è stato co-fondatore di Astor SIM, la quale è stata acquisita da DECALIA Asset Management nel 2016. Precedentemente ha fondato e diretto Sopaf nel 1978, società attiva nel settore del Private Equity, Finanza, Real Estate e Trading, prima di vendere la società nel 2005. Jody Vender ha conseguito una laurea in Economia Aziendale all’Università Bocconi di Milano, dove è stato anche Professore incaricato nell’Area Finanza dal 1977 al 2004. È stato membro del Consiglio di Amministrazione di AIFI (Associazione del Private Equity) e di diverse società quali Rinaldo Piaggio, Buitoni, Zanussi, Mondadori e Banca Nazionale dell’Agricoltura. Attualmente è membro del Consiglio di Amministrazione di Humanitas, Coeclerici, Prelios, Assiteca, Guber e Jove Invest. Jody Vender has more than forty years of experience working in alternative markets. In 2008, he was a co-founder of Astor SIM, then bought by DECALIA Asset Management in 2016. Sono stato l’ultimo allievo di Nino Gianoli, storico cronista di San Siro, e assistente di Luigi Gianoli a “Il Ca vallo”. Ho lavorato con Danilo Iovenali a Franco Raimondi a “Cavalli & Corse”. Ho diviso la scrivania con Sandro Cepparulo e Michele Ferrante a “Sport Italia”. Mi sono molto divertito. Nel frattempo, studiavo giurisprudenza e da quasi trent’anni faccio l’avvoca to. I was the last to learn from San Siro’s legendary commentator Nino Gianoli and to work as Luigi Gianoli’s assistant at “Il Cavallo”. I also worked with Danilo Iovenali and Franco Raimondi at “Cavalli & Corse” as well as sharing a desk with Sandro Cepparulo and Michele Ferrante at “Sport Italia”. I had a great time. ROLEX EQUESTRIAN FEATURE STORY: A PERPETUAL FRIENDSHIP Steve Guerdat is an Olympic champion, clinching individual gold at the London 2012 Games, riding Nino de Buissonnets. It was Switzerland’s first show jumping gold medal in 88 years, achieved with style and perfection by Guerdat and Nino, the only rider and horse combination to record fault-free rides in the final two rounds. With the world watching, under the most intense pressure, and when every stride counted, their execution was flawless.

During a period of sustained success, Guerdat has become one of only five riders to win the Rolex Grand Prix at CHI Geneva three times (2006, 2013 and 2015) while in 2019 he also won his third FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final title in 2019. His list of honours extends across the world’s most prestigious show jumping events. Take it from Martin Fuchs, the Swiss show jumper who in January 2020 briefly succeeded Guerdat as World No. 1 before his countryman regained the mantle. “I have known Steve for such a long time, since our parents competed together,” says Fuchs, 27, a Rolex Testimonee, who took silver behind Guerdat at the 2019 FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final before closing the year with his first Rolex Grand Prix victory at the Concours Hippique International de Genève. On that occasion he

He has always been my role model and this has never changed,” adds Fuchs, who is also the reigning FEI European champion. “I used to watch him ride and I would walk the courses with him. Then he asked my dad to train him and since then we have become really close. “To see how Steve trains and to see how he manages all of his horses is incredible. He has been in the top 10 for so many years, winning with so many different horses and this is so inspiring for me.”

Fuchs could ride before he could run. His grandfather was a farmer who branched out into horses and built a riding school. Fuchs’ mother, father and uncle, Renata, Thomas and Markus, became international show jumpers, and both Thomas and Markus represented Switzerland at the Olympics.

The Fuchs family operation is based in idyllic countryside outside Zurich, in Switzerland’s north-east, and is just eight kilometres from where Guerdat has established his own home, stables and headquarters. Thomas Fuchs mentors Guerdat, Guerdat influences Martin Fuchs, and Fuchs provides the competition to help keep Guerdat sharp.

Vedevo la presenza di Rolex nello sport attraverso Rodrigo Pessoa.

“Martin and I spend a lot of time together,” says Guerdat, who has been coached by Fuchs senior since 2007. “I have probably spent more time with the Fuchs family than my own in recent years. Spending so much time with Thomas and Martin has created a very strong relationship between us, both professionally and as friends. “Martin and I have a similar way of doing things, so we often don’t need to say a lot; it’s more the smaller details and knowing that you have someone who you can rely on. It is a very strong, real, true friendship.” But Guerdat is also fully aware his close friend is also his nearest rival. “I always train hard and go into every competition trying my best, but I don’t think anything can push you as hard as having someone like Martin to compete with,” admits Guerdat. “Seeing him grow each day and winning so much already at such a young age, it pushes me every day to work even harder to try to get better. Having someone as good as Martin to compete with, it makes sure that I don’t get complacent. I see a lot of things already from Martin that he does much better than me, so it really motivates me to become a better rider.” Reflects Fuchs: “At the end of the day, you just go into the ring and you want to do the best that you can, you want to win, obviously you don’t want to be beaten by anyone, but we are always happy for each other, and it’s great to have Steve as a teammate for Switzerland. To be able to support and help the Swiss team is great and we are able to spur each other on.”

“When I was younger, I always remember seeing Rolex’s involvement with the sport and Rodrigo Pessoa,” says Guerdat. “Since then, it has always been a dream for me to be a part of the Rolex family. It makes me so proud to be a Rolex Testimonee and there are very few days when I don’t think about it. It is one of my biggest achievements.”

Una bella storia iniziata con sella americana e cappello da cow boy... PIERGIORGIO BUCCI AND CASAGO Piergiorgio Bucci is the winner of the 2020 Italian Show Jumping Championship. The 45-year-old rider from L’Aquila was a very popular winner, who, riding his elegant 9-year-old grey Casago, added his name to the championship’s Roll of Honour for the second time. He had won his first gold medal in 2008 riding Varetino. “This is really immensely satisfying,” he said, “because this horse is really very special. He is a Holsteiner born in Holland and I chose him when he still a 3-year-old at a stud farm, but his owner wasn’t’ willing to sell him. He did put him up for sale a year later and I made sure I didn’t miss this chance to buy him. He really is a star. For him this Championship proved to be the first time I was obliged to put him under a little pressure because, although he is now nine, I have tried to take things slowly with him to allow him to mature as much as possible. It makes me feel confident to have a horse of such quality in my stables. His breeding includes an excellent dam and that is why he also started to stand at stud when he was still very young and has produced many offspring of which I already have three in my stables.” Bucci has been living abroad for many years and is one of the Italian team’s key riders (team silver medal at the 2009 European Championships). “Living abroad was a choice I had to make. Once cannot live only off show jumping and so as to be able to remain at the top level of the international circuit it is absolutely indispensable

Taking into account the current situation in general, in Italy owners of important competitive sports horses are sadly becoming extinct. In Holland I started off by forming a company with a friend and the moved there permanently in 2010, to a place I had seen when going to buy a horse. Now I live in Holland permanently but have stables in Belgium, in Hamont, just across the border. I work a lot with young horses. I own about thirty and many of them are at stud farms. I have room for twelve in my yard and there are currently four or five places reserved to Grand Prix horses. I have a really interesting team of horses now for top competitions.” Born in L’Aquila, where his father was working as the director of construction being done on the Gran Sasso tunnel, as a boy Piergiorgio Bucci chose a life that was certainly not fully approved of by his family. It did not prove to be easy for him to become a success in the world of show jumping. “I started together with my brother and we used to go to a tiny riding school just outside the city where Western riding was taught. Basically, we only went hacking and nothing else. It was, however, enough to make me understand that that was to be my life. Then I was lucky enough to meet the right people. Elio Balestrazzi , the owner and instructor of a riding school was my first reference point. So as to encourage me to learn he even went without his own horses, allowing me to ride them at my first shows. Francesco De Finis, an enthusiastic Neapolitan rider who for many years was also president of the Campania Region’s Equestrian Sports Regional Committee, gave me my first ride on a top horse. But the moment I consider life changing in my career as a rider came when I met the Belgian rider Jean Claude Noel who lived in Narni, in Umbria and immediately after that I met Duccio Bartalucci.” What a wonderful story, in which everything started with an American saddle and a cowboy’s hat ...

La passione per il cavallo lo ha folgorato da adulto.

“The most wonderful image that comes to my mind when I think back to the many years I spent cultivating my passion for show jumping, is linked to the riding club close to Milan where I was a member of for twenty years and to the rider who made it great with his constant presence: Castellazzo and Graziano Mancinelli. So as to get to the office in time I would ride just after sunrise and he was always the only other rider in the indoor school. Due to a strange effect caused by the light in the semidarkness it always looked as if his horse was riderless.” Jody Vender is an elegant gentleman from Lombardy who recently turned seventy, looking a lot younger than his age, and who is a great deal more than just a VIP in the world of finance. Having graduated from the Bocconi in the Seventies, staying on as a professor until 2005, at university he mainly addressed the subjects of finance in SMEs and more in particular Venture Capital and Private Equity. In his field of expertise, he has always been both a scholar-professor and a professional operator and has written a number of academic books and published various articles in the daily newspapers Il Sole 24 Ore and the Corriere della Sera. He developed his passion for horses as a grown-up, “Ever since I was a little boy, I spent the holidays in the family’s house in St. Moritz. I never enjoyed myself as much as I should have because due to health problems I wasn’t allowed to ski or practice many other sports. It was there that aged 37 I enrolled in a riding school and instantly became captivated. I wondered what to do about it when I returned to Milan and discussed the matter with my cousin Emanuele Castellini, who advised me to join the Castellazzo Riding Club, which I immediately did after being formally introduced to Graziano Mancinelli and his wife Nelly.”

Moving from a riding school for tourists to a centre of excellence such as Castellazzo was certainly not a painless experience for Jody Vender, who did, however, very quickly learn to adapt. “The first problem was posed by my horse. I had bought one in Switzerland without asking too many questions and thought it suited my needs perfectly. When it arrived, everyone gathered around the horsebox to see it. As soon as it had been unloaded, Mancinelli looked at me in disgust and said, “Dearest Vender, get rid of it immediately.” Then he turned and walked away. Not the best of starts, but he was right, since I had not even noticed that the horse had undergone a neurectomy.

Actually, I didn’t even know what that meant.” In spite of his professional commitments, Vender managed to reconcile sport and work, and for more than twenty years regularly rode at horse shows jumping in quite big classes. He stopped competing in 2005 following heart surgery. “My style was appalling but I had a really good eye. If Ihad so much fun, I owe it to Charming, a Belgian horse I also bought in Switzerland as an eight-year-old and that I rode until he was thirty-two. He was really fantastic. We celebrated his 30th birthday together clearing a 1.30m jump. I have owned many other horses, but none like him.” Castellazzo is a special place was made so by the presence of Graziano Mancinelli. “The Cavaliere [title of an Order of Merit in Italy, Editor’s Note] often taught me, but the person who helped me most of all was his wife Nelly. We often went to shows, at least twice a month. I continued to ride and until a few months ago still owned a horse. I adore the countryside and whenever possible I escape Milan and drive to the Val Tidone, on the hills near Piacenza where there is the house I love dearly and that I consider my ‘buen retiro’. I don’t really like riding in an indoor school while I love going out hacking and that’s why I would like to buy a nice quarter horse. I now enjoy watching my granddaughters, Emma and Maria. They have both started riding and I am sure I will greatly enjoy the role of being a horsey grandfather.

FIERACAVALLI VERONA Venti anni di World Cup

Venti anni di Coppa del Mondo, venti anni di grande equitazione a Fieraca valli. Jumping Verona 2020 ta glia il tra guardo delle 20 edizioni della Longines FEI World Cup ed è pronta a scrivere ancora pa gine importanti nella storia del salto ostacoli. Rivivere le passa te edizioni della Coppa del Mondo a Verona è infatti come ripercorrere i momenti salienti dell’ultimo ventennio del jumping internazionale, con i suoi più grandi cavalieri e i suoi più grandi cavalli. Il primo appuntamento della World Cup nella sede scaligera risale al novembre 2001. Quell’edizione si rivela subito un successo sia di pubblico che tecnico, culminando con un Gran Premio firmato dal belga Stann y Van Paesschen in sella a O de Pomme. Ancor più ricca l’edizione 2002 con la presenza dei primi 10 cavalieri del mondo del Ranking FEI e la vittoria di un binomio straordinario: quello campione del mondo 1998, composto dal campionissimo brasiliano Rodrigo Pessoa con il baio Lianos. Di successo in successo, l’edizione 2003 legittima l’organizzazione e le strutture di Fieracavalli tra le migliori del circuito internazionale indoor. Quell’anno a siglare il Gran Premio di Coppa del Mondo è il tedesco Lars Nieberg con Loreana seguito nel 2004 dal connazionale Toni Hassmann con Lolita H. Nel 2005 la firma nell’albo d’oro è invece quella di Albert Zoer con il mitico Okidoki. Per l’Olanda si tra tta della prima delle tre vittorie consecutive ottenute poi nel 2006 da Gerco Schröder ed Eurocommerce Milano e, nel 2007, ancora da Zoer e Okidoki, ad oggi, unico binomio ad aver vinto due volte al cospetto del pubblico di Fieraca valli. Ancora Germania nel 2008 con il successo di Alois Pollmann Schweckorst con Lord Luis e ‘zampata’ di un vecchio leone come Michael Whitaker con Insul Teck Amai nel 2009.

FIERACAVALLI VERONA - 20 YEARS OF WORLD CUP After nineteen editions of the World Cup and as many years of great equestrianism at Fieracavalli, Jumping Verona 2020 is now ready to continue to record important pages in the history of show jumping with the 20th Longines FEI World Cup. Revisiting past editions of the Verona World Cup is just like revisiting the most exciting moments of the last twenty years of international show jumping, with its great riders and its greatest horses. The first time the World Cup was held in Verona dates back to November 2001. That event was an instant success both at a technical level and with the public, with the Grand Prix won by Belgium’s Stanny Van Paesschen riding O de Pomme. The 2002 edition was even more exciting with the top ten riders in the FEI Ranking competing there and a win for Brazil’s champion rider Rodrigo Pessoa riding the bay Lianos. Moving from success to success, the 2003 edition legitimised Fieracavalli’s organisation and facilities as among the best in the international indoor circuit. That year the World Cup Grand Prix was won by Germany’s Lars Nieberg riding Loreana, followed in 2004 by his compatriot Toni Hassmann riding Lolita H. In 2005 the name added to the roll of honour was Albert Zoer riding the legendary Okidoki and for Holland this was the first of three consecutive wins, with Gerco Schröder and Eurocommerce Milano winning in 2006 and, in 2007, once again Zoer and Okidoki, still today the only horse and rider combination to have won twice at Fieracavalli.

Jumping Verona 2020 taglia il traguardo delle 20 edizioni della Longines FEI World Cup.

A suggellare l’edizione del decennale è ancora un campione olimpico: l’olandese Jeroem Dubbeldam con BMC Van Grunsven Simon. Dopo la tra gica scomparsa di Hickstead nel 2011, è la Spa gna a salire sugli allori nel 2012 grazie a Sergio Alvarez Moya con l’a gile Zipper seguito, nel 2013, dal tedesco Christian Ahlmann e il grigio Ara gon Z. Nel 2014 Jumping Verona consacra l’astro nascente Bertram Allen tra i grandi. L’irlandese, allora poco più che 19enne, si a ggiudica un Gran premio memorabile con la sua Molly Malone V diventando così il vincitore più giovane della storia. Nel 2015 è invece Simon Delestre a vincere con Hermes Ry an. Quella del francese è stata una vittoria che in qualche modo ha chiuso un cerchio visto che Delestre ha gareggiato a Fieraca valli fin da giovanissimo nelle gare per i pon y! Al meritato successo nel 2016 di un outsider come l’egiziano Said Abdel con Hope van Scherpen Donder, nel 2017 ha fa tto eco un binomio consolida to come quello forma to da Maikel van der Vleuten e lo stallone VDL Groep Verdi TN. Per la sta tistica, van der Vleuten e Verdi avevano già sfiorato la vittoria con il secondo posto del 2014 e il quinto del 2015, e con il loro successo hanno porta to a cinque i primi posti degli olandesi a Jumping Verona, superando così i tedeschi. Nel 2018 ci pensa però Daniel Deusser, a segno con Calisto Blue, a riportare la Germania in parità conquistando il quinto successo, mentre il 2019 saluta il trionfo del britannico Scott Brash con Hello M’Lady. Anche per Brash la vittoria è arriva ta dopo vari tenta tivi: secondo con Ursula XII nel 2013 e terzo nel 2015 in sella ancora a Hello M’Lad y. Quanto ai cavalieri italiani, sebbene siano sta ti molte volte tra i prota gonisti, gli azzurri non hanno mai vinto a Jumping Verona. Tutta via sono tre le piazza d’onore conquista te: nel 2005 da Juan Carlos Garcia su Loro Piana Albin III, nel 2012 da Luca Maria Moneta con Neptune Brecourt e nel 2017 da Alberto Zorzi con Fair Light van’t Heike.

Germany won again in 2008 thanks to Alois Pollmann Schweckorst riding Lord Luis, while the old lion Michael Whitaker roared once again riding Insul Teck Amai to victory in 2009. The tenth edition went to Dutch Olympic champion Jeroem Dubbeldam riding BMC Van Grunsven Simon. After Hickstead’s tragic death in 2011, victory went to Spain in 2012 thanks to Sergio Alvarez Moya with his clever horse Zipper, followed in 2013 by Germany’s Christian Ahlmann riding the grey Aragon Z. In 2014 Jumping Verona saw victory go to rising star Bertram Allen when the Irish rider, at the time just a nineteen-year-old, won a memorable Grand Prix riding his lovely Molly Malone V and becoming the youngest winner in the show’s history. In 2015 the winner was instead Simon Delestre riding Hermes Ryan. This win in some way completed a circle for Delestre who had competed in pony classes at Fieracavalli ever since he was a young boy! Following a well-deserved win by Egyptian outsider Said Abdel on Hope van Scherpen Donder in 2016, in 2017 victory went to a well-established combination formed by Maikel van der Vleuten and the stallion VDL Groep Verdi TN. Interestingly, van der Vleuten and Verdi had come close to victory finishing second in 2014 and fifth in 2015, and thanks to this win The Netherlands overtook Germany with five victories in the Jumping Verona Grand Prix. Il cavallo faceva parte del DNA della mia famiglia. A THOROUGHBRED ARTIST The four years spent as the director of the Italian Institute of Culture in London have flown by, characterised by a constant series of extremely successful initiatives, with exhibitions, concerts, encounters and debates, hosting artists and guests representing the best of Italian excellence, as well as book presentations, charity events and the Festival of Italian Theatre and Literature. Marco Delogu, sixty years old and with an enviable CV as a photographer, returned to Italy a little over a year ago and settled in Maremma, in Capalbio, living in the country house he considers as his “Buen Retiro”. “Now I want to start working as a photographer again and try and organise an art and literature summer camp as my cultural legacy following these four wonderful years spent in Belgrave Square” he said at the end of a lengthy interview with the daily newspaper La Repubblica, just before leaving his job in the United Kingdom. For a man with a passion for thoroughbreds, living in a country where love for horses is expressed in a way unequalled anywhere else in the world, was a significantly joyful experience. Horses, in fact, are an integral part of Delogu’s life. In the garden of his house in Capalbio there are two thoroughbreds with aristocratic blood lines, Rumbonorte and Bierso, now long-retired from racing, as well as a small stable block, an arena and a track that is inspired by Piazza del Campo in Siena and a gate that opens onto kilometres of hacking paths. These are the essential elements that make all the difference and have resulted in his choosing a life that is certainly not marked by comforts and conveniences. Where did this great passion come from? Horses are part of my family’s DNA both on the maternal and the paternal side. My grandfather Antonio had horses on his farm near Sassari and during the war my father used them as transport to travel the six kilometres he had to cover every day to go to school at the Azuni Highschool, with his friends Francesco Cossiga and Giovanni Berlinguer. For my mother’s family instead, horses were business and their successful transport company was started using carriages long before they moved on to buses. I always had horses nearby. I was born and grew up in Rome, but I spent every summer in Sardinia, in Barbagia, on my grandfather’s farm at Cala Gonone. This small village inhabited by three hundred souls, mainly all involved in sheep farming and breeding Anglo Arab horses, was where three of Italy’s greatest jockeys were born: Fabio and Mauro Branca and Silvano Mulas, the only Italian jockey to have won both the Palio in Siena and the Derby. I had fun with them galloping as fast as we could along the many dirt roads and endless beaches. When I was 14, instead of giving me a scooter my father gave me a horse. He bought me one of the many thoroughbreds at the Capannelle racetrack that are retired from racing because they aren’t fast enough. His name was Urbino and he was a very good horse and i kept him at our house in the country in Tuscany where I could ride him every weekend.

When did you start going to the races? Once again it was thanks to my father. I remember travelling by train to Agnano to watch the Lotteria Prize and we never missed important meetings at Capannelle. It was at the track in Rome that I saw the great Derbies won by the Dormello Olgiata in years now remembered as the golden age of Italian racing. My father often took me with him when he travelled abroad to attend medical conferences and so I was lucky enough to watch many races in foreign countries at famous tracks such as Solvalla and Longchamps. And then this passion also resulted in you becoming the owner of a racehorse? Yes. Passion and my friendship with a very special trainer, Gianluca Bietolini, and my friend the actor Massimo Reale with whom I worked for many years. I am very proud of my horse because out of the 102 races he ran we won 33 in Capalbio, Florence and Pisa. This passion, which had been dormant for many years, was rekindled after my father’s death when I was thirty. During that same period, I started to ride again in Maremma. My first two horses were not racehorses and were a gift from the author Susanna Tamaro. Tell us a little about the time you spent in London. It was magnificent because at all the racetracks I had many Italian friends who have become important in the world of racing, allowing me to enjoy racing in the most exclusive circles, including Ascot’s Royal Enclosure. Moving around in the paddock or at the prizegiving and seeing the Aga Khan, Niarchos, Queen Elizabeth and Al Macktoum just a few yards away is certainly not something that happens every day. I managed to watch all the classic races and the most exciting day of all was seeing Andrea Atzeni on Postponed, trained by da Luca Cumani, winning the King George and Queen Elisabeth Stakes in 2015 in a photo-finish with Frankie Dettori. That was unforgettable. There were other unique memories such as my exhibition of the photographs for the book entitled “The Thirty Assassins”, portraits of the jockeys in Siena’s Palio, hosted by the Newmarket Museum and then riding through Hyde Park on horses used by the Queen for parades. In 2016 there was a spending review regarding the stables in Knightsbridge and about 90 people were recruited in diplomatic circles to exercise the horses very early in the morning every day. I was one of them. Racing at Ascot enchanted me and I was lucky enough to visit the most famous racetrack in the world with a pass for the Royal Enclosure, the area that in addition to the Queen hosts important guests such as Niarchos, the Aga Khan and Sheikh Al Macktoum. The famous National Horse Racing Museum in the Palace at Newmarket hosted the photographic exhibition for my book “The Thirty Assassins”, with portraits of the Siena Palio’s jockeys as well as a retrospective of the best photographs of horses in my portfolio.

Your publishing house Punctum Press has presented a number of books in which horses are the leading characters, right? I have published two editions of the book entitled Fotofinish, Four Studies of Horses and various monographs. “The Invisible Squares”, a rather beautiful book created during the lock down is being distributed at the moment and is a book depicting twenty-one city squares each narrated by a photographer and an author. This passion for horses and for art also resulted in your sponsoring a real collection of works of art all signed by female artists and dedicated to Lydia Tesio for the Hippo Group Roma Capannelle. Every year in the autumn, at the race named after the breeder of the legendary Ribot, there is the presentation of a work of art by a female artist. GREAT EVENTS PLANNED TO CELEBRATE THE CENTENARY OF THE MILANESE LIBERTY-STYLED FACILITIES: THE DARDUST CONCERT AT THE FEET OF LEONARDO’S HORSE AND THE EXHIBITION ENTITLED “100 YEARS OF THRILLS” INAUGURATED DURING THE AUTUMN FAI DAYS Within the context of celebrations for the centenary of the only racetrack in the world to have been declared a monument of national interest, its owner Snaitech has organised two wonderful events to celebrate this important anniversary in the best possible way. On October 16th the racetrack was the fabulous setting for the concert held in streaming by Dardust. One of the most popular pianists in the world, an exceptional composer and producer as well as the creator of some of the most important recent Italian hits, the artist performed with a string quintet at the feet of Leonardo’s Horse. The event was broadcast live on the racetrack’s Facebook page and the video content remained available on demand for the following seven days. The exhibition celebrating the SNAI San Siro Racetrack’s first century of history was opened to the public on October 17th on the FAI Autumn Days. For the third year in a row, the SNAI San Siro Racetrack was confirmed as one of the jewels to be discovered added to the FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano list. After the thousands of visitors welcomed at previous editions, the enchanting liberty-style racing facilities set in the centre of the city of Milan took part once again in the FAI Autumn Days, opening its gates on the weekend of October 17th and 18th at 6 p.m.. This was a very important event at which Snaitech inaugurated the “100 Years of Thrills” exhibition. The Milan racetrack in fact boasts a long and fascinating history that started exactly a century ago in 1920, when it was inaugurated in the presence of over 30,000 people. These anecdotes, as well as many unknown stories, are at the centre of the exhibition “100 Years of Thrills”, sponsored by the Municipality of Milan, organised by Snaitech and curated by Professor Stefano della Torre, professor of restoration at the Milan Polytechnic. The exhibition consists of six panels prepared in the Leonardo’s Horse Area that, using prints, photographs and texts of the times, illustrate the historic-architectural evolution of a racetrack that is unique in its genre. So as to fully guarantee full respect of all health regulations, visits are permitted in small groups with online bookings strongly advised at www.giornatefai.it. In addition to this exhibition there will be many other surprises awaiting visitors. As always in fact, thanks to FAI volunteers who accompany visitors, it will be possible to discover the famous beauty of this magnificent location, ranging from the botanical gardens with their 55 different registered and listed species to Leonardo’s Horse, one of the largest equestrian sculptures in the world. SIGNORINETTA: A LOVE STORY No one has ever understood whether Knight Edoardo Ginistrelli was a genius with flashes of madness or a madman with flashes of genius. Not even Federico Tesio understood, and having wanted to meet him then described him as “an original man with new ideas.” Born in Naples in 1832, Ginistrelli actually came from Lavello in Lucania, where his parents owned a great deal of land. In the Italian racing world of the mid-1800s, a sort of exclusive club for aristocrats, Ginistrelli was a fish out of water. Rich, but not immensely rich, with no blue blood in his veins, always dressed like a peasant even on Bank Holidays, he was animated by an absolute all-consuming almost obsessive obsession for thoroughbreds. He was convinced he had to “stop racing from being a unique and frivolous motive for entertainment.” He was initially tolerated and then increasingly openly rejected especially after he founded the Gazzetta Ippica Italiana in 1873, a newspaper he used to argue with the entire racing world. In 1880 in Naples, in the Principe di Ottajano Prize, one of his horse was clearly damaged in the race by one its opponents, but the judges present saw nothing. This was the last straw and Ginistrelli lost all his self-control and tried to attack Prince Gerace. He was held back with difficulty and the walked away shouting that no one would ever again see him race his horses in Italy and that he would move to England. A genius or a madman?

Ginistrelli bought a stable in Newmarket, at the time already Europe’s racing capital, and shipped his horses to England. In 1881 his filly Sucky was the first horse born and bred in Italy to win a race in the United Kingdom. But revenge, his real revenge, was yet to come. Ginistrelli had taken with him his very best mare, Star of Portici, with which in 1874 he had won the Arno Race in Florence and was now a broodmare. Excellent by Italian standards, but mediocre by British ones, Ginistrelli decided to send the mare to the most famous and expensive stallion of the times, St. Simon. A genius or a madman? In 1887 a filly called Signorina was born from that encounter with St. Simon. With nine wins in nine races as a two-year-old, Signorina was judged to be the best horse of her generation. Sadly, in the winter of 1890 she contracted a bad liver infection which slowed down her training for the classic races in the spring and yet this did not prevent her from finishing second in the Oaks and then winning the prestigious Lancashire Plate in Manchester as a four-year old. Ginistrelli did not like Signorina; he adored her, venerated her, paying so much attention to her that it became almost pathological. On Sundays, if the weather was good, he would have a piano placed outside her stable and improvise concerts attended only by Signorina. One day he summoned a team of workmen ordering them to transform the stable next to Signorina’s into a bedroom for him. Not content with this he also asked them to build a dividing wall only as tall as where his pillow was, so that he could check on the horse during the night without having to get up. In spite of all this attention Signorina did not manage to produce a foal for ten years. Any other breeder would have given up, but not Ginistrelli. A genius or a madman? Ginistrelli’s perseverance was rewarded. In 1902, at last, Signorina carried her foal full term and Signorino was born, a colt that as a three-year-old came second in the Two Thousand Guineas, third in the Newmarket Stakes and third in the Derby, less than a length from the winner. Bought by the government he turned out to be an outstanding stallion and eight of his offspring won the Italian Derby, seven of these bred by Federico Tesio. Perked up by Signorino’s birth, in 1903 he booked (and paid) for Signorina to go to Isinglass, another famous stallion of the time. Something destined to become a legend happened in the spring of 1904. The following is the perhaps slightly romanticised version told by Federico Tesio. Led by a groom and followed by Ginistrelli who was riding a bicycle, Signorina was being walked through Newmarket on her way to the stud farm where Isinglass was waiting. A number of third level stallions were being walked along the High Street in Newmarket with their names embroidered on their blankets as well as the price of covering, in the hope that some undecided breeder with little money to spend might notice them and buy their services. Among them there was one called Chaleureux, who, every time he saw Signorina, would stop, breathe in her fragrance, neigh and refuse to move. Signorina too stopped and refused to keep on walking that day. Soon a small crowd of curious onlookers formed with many laughing and making rude comments. Ginistrelli watched the scene and later said that he had never in his life heard a horse neigh that way. Had his adored Signorina, until then always indifferent to the attention of stallions, fallen in love with Chaleureux? And so, he decided she should be allowed to mate with him and to hell with Isinglass and the money spent to book him. A genius or a madman? That mating resulted in the birth of Signorinetta. Her career as a two-year-old was disappointing and she was never placed in her first five races, while on her sixth attempt she won an unimportant race in Newmarket. But it would take a great deal more than that to even scratch the surface of Ginistrelli’s confidence and at the end of the year he confirmed (and paid) the expensive starting fees for the Derby and the Oaks. As a three-year-old she raced in the Thousand Guineas won by Rhodora with Signorinetta finishing a long way back. After finishing fifth in the Newmarket Stakes,

On June 3rd, 1908, Signorinetta, the only filly racing among the eighteen starters, was an extreme outsider in the Derby at 100 to 1. On a splendid sunny day, it seemed that the whole of England had decided to meet at the racetrack. The stands were packed; King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra were there, while the fields inside the track were packed with Londoners who had travelled to Epsom in every possible way. For the very first time the favourite was an American thoroughbred called Norman and his owner, the banker August Belmont, had arrived in Epsom accompanied by another famous millionaire, the railway magnate William Vanderbilt, who also had a runner. The Americans have no idea what superstition means and had also brought along a group of majorettes, dressed in the stars and stripes and with long trumpets ready to celebrate victory. Ginistrelli, with his threadbare suit of a now undefinable colour and an old-fashioned panama hat on his head, was seen as a sort of caricature, all the more so because, while other trainers gave orders and advice to their jockeys, he whispered incomprehensible words in Signorinetta’s ears. A roar from the crowds marked the start of the race. As they turned onto the straight Norman soon seemed beaten, leaving Primer and Llangwm to do battle, while alone on the outside a jockey wearing blue and white striped silks was blatantly make up ground. It was Billy Bullock, riding Signorinetta, who literally flew past her opponents to go on to win by two lengths surrounded by general amazement. In addition to the bookmakers, who had made a fortune, only Oscar Wilde’s lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, was celebrating in the stands, because the night before he had dreamt she had won and had bet £5 on Signorinetta. The Oaks was run two days later and Signorinetta was back on the racetrack. The odds were no longer 100 to 1 but she was not the favourite either, because the experts did not think she could beat the very powerful Rhodora, who had not been entered for the Derby. But instead Signorinetta won again easily, this time also thanks to a stroke of luck, since Rhodora fell together with another horse. Signorinetta’s feat was an extraordinary one. In the 200-year-long history of these two races only six fillies have won the Derby with just four also managing to win the Oaks. Of these only one after Signorinetta (Fifinella in 1916). Ginistrelli was the first to win the Derby simultaneously as breeder, owner and trainer. Only one other man managed to do the same after him, Arthur Budgett in 1969. Ginistrelli refused many important offers, first for Signorina and then for Signorinetta. But he was now old and tired and in 1911 he sold Signorinetta to the most famous racehorse owner in England, Lord Rosebery, then he sold off his stables and returned permanently to Italy. Already forgotten, he died in Naples on September 20th, 1920.

ART, NATURE AND ARCHITECTURE: MIMMO PALADINO FOR PIAZZA DI SIENA It is wonderful to meet again in the Villa Borghese and remember how the Piazza di Siena horse show is such a unique event, because it remains alive throughout the year. There is a shared element between art, architecture and nature in this park that always plays a leading role, in addition to the care and maintenance as well as structural and architectural work, such as the new fence built around the Piazza’s grass oval this year. It is no coincidence that the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation (FISE) and Sport e Salute Spa have decided to be partners in ‘Back to Nature, Contemporary Art in Villa Borghese’ curated by Costantino D’Orazio. This is an artistic itinerary, created with open-air installations and performances among the park’s trees, confirming the never-ending dialogue that exists between humankind’s works of arts and those created by nature. These are works of art created or specifically reinvented by world famous artists such as Andreco, Mario Merz, Benedetto Pietromarchi, Davide Rivalta, Grazia Toderi, Edoardo Tresoldi, Nico Vascellari and Mimmo Paladino. Paladino is the artist who turned the dance between references to the past and contemporary projections into an art and a lifestyle. His works of art include the Red Horse on Ancona and the bronze one in Modena. Then there is also the “Sand Horse”, a magnificent sentinel of art placed where art is an inevitable and natural event; the Paestum archaeological park, set between the two temples of Hera and Neptune. It is that very horse, created in fiberglass and covered with sand from the beach in Poseidonia, that represents a clear, net and unmistakeable link with this vision of Piazza di Siena. Horses, nature, art. A perfect summary of this project. Mimmo Paladino, thanks to help provided by Costantino D’Orazio, wished to assist the Organising Committee by creating the ten flags that have been dancing in the Villa Borghese’s breeze from the battlements of the Pietro Canonica Museum, acting as the witnesses of another extraordinary initiative that has now been authorised and approved; the Valle dei Platani Project. It is a project aimed at the preservation, valorisation and restoration of vitality and light, including ‘medical’ care of those magnificent and centuries-old works of art by nature, which Peter Hamilton Raven, considered the greatest living botanist, described as, “Masterpieces as incomparable as Donatello’s David.” The natural slope on which the eleven 17th century plane trees stand, planted by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, and that we consider the sentinels of the Villa and of Rome’s eternity, is one of the most magical and evocative places in the whole world and will be the setting for this project to completed on the eve of the next international horse show.

Marco Di Paola, imprenditore romano classe ‘68, ca valiere di buon livello, proprietario di ca valli della prima squadra del salto ostacoli e una passione incontenibile per gli sport equestri a tutto tondo, è sta to rieletto alla Presidenza della Federazione Italiana Sport Equestri per il secondo manda to.

Il nostro movimento ci ha confermato una fiducia massiccia.

A Roman entrepreneur born in 1968, a good rider, the owner of horses ridden by Italy’s top team and a man with an uncontrollable passion for all equestrian sports, Marco Di Paola has been re-elected President of the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation for a second term. “Our equestrian world has confirmed its immense confidence in us; it was a very important election and very satisfying,” he said just after being re-elected. “I am sure I will not disappoint you. This means that our project is a good one and we must pursue it since it is moving in the right direction. We must continue to transform the federation, which must change from being an institution to become an organisations providing services to its members and above all its users. The federation must become increasingly more accessible, pervious to the needs of all members and above all a means for resolving problems rather than a burden. I am satisfied because the movement has rewarded the whole team I presented for the Board of Directors and I am therefore assisted by a team I personally chose to achieve the objectives established.”

La Fise deve diventare sempre più accessibile, permeabile alle istanze degli utenti e sopra ttutto un mezzo per trovare soluzione ai problemi e non un peso. Sono soddisfa tto perché il movimento ha premia to tutta la squadra da me proposta per il Consiglio Federale ed ho quindi al mio fianco il team che ho scelto per ra ggiungere gli obiettivi prefissa ti. Abbiamo anche importanti tra guardi sportivi da ra ggiungere - ha a ggiunto Di Paola con una squadra qualifica ta per le Olimpiadi di Tokyo per il completo e una qualifica individuale per il salto ostacoli: sfide importanti ci a ttendono. E poi non dimentichiamo Piazza di Siena a fine ma ggio 2021, un a ppuntamento di cui andiamo fieri e che, dopo la manca ta edizione del 2020 causa Covid-19, siamo convinti possa essere un evento inegua gliabile e una festa bellissima per tutto il movimento sportivo”. Il polo è una disciplina equestre basa ta sul gioco di squadra. Oltre all’empa tia con il ca vallo, elemento indispensabile per pra ticare qualsiasi disciplina equestre, un gioca tore di polo sente scorrere nelle vene un livello altissimo di adrenalina durante tutta la partita genera to dal dover galoppare ponendo a ttenzione su di sé, il ca vallo, i compa gni di squadra, gli a vversari e, ovviamente, la palla. Il polo è indiscutibilmente un gioco di squadra a ca vallo molto divertente da vivere sia dentro che fuori dal campo di gioco. C’è chi lo definisce “lo sport dei re” o forse meglio ancora, il “re degli sport”. Esiste una variante poco conosciuta in Italia per cui si può giocare con un solo ca vallo insieme ai propri amici di club: l’Arena Polo. Oltre al classico gioco del polo che si svolge su distese verdi accompa gna to da eventi di prestigio, il polo ha un grande potenziale meno elitario per cui non è necessario un budget notevole per pra ticarlo.

La Lombardia e il Lazio, squadre composte da giovani gioca tori più esperti, hanno comba ttuto in campo contro sca tena ti gioca tori di polo principianti ra ppresentanti della Campania e delle Marche. In addition to empathy for horses, essential for all equestrian sports, polo players experience extremely high levels of adrenaline flowing through their veins during matches as the result of having to galop at high speed while paying attention to themselves, to their polo ponies, to their team and their opponents and of course, also to the ball. Polo is without doubt a team sport that is immense fun whether playing or watching. It is known as “the sport of kings” or, perhaps better yet, “the king of sport”. The Italian Equestrian Sports Federation (FISE) believes in Arena Polo and in 2019 started an initiative called Pony Club Polo, aimed at younger riders so as to promote matches played on small ponies. The format consists in organising five training clinics in every Italian region, at the end of which the instructors who have attended receive certification allowing them to introduce Pony Club Polo in their riding schools. The success of this initiative allowed the sport to be included in the 2019 so-called “ponyades”, a mini-Olympics held for Italian pony clubs, and was welcomed with great enthusiasm by all those involved. Lombardy and Latium, with teams fielding the best players, fought matches against enthusiastic young players from the Campania and Marche regions.

T ROP EZ Il Polo Team Battistoni ha vissuto la stagione estiva 2020 del Polo Club St. Tropez nei panni di grande protagonista. La squadra capitanata da Alessandro Barnaba e composta dai fratelli argentini Juan e Piero Auleche (24 e 29 anni) ha letteralmente dominato la scena aggiudicandosi tre dei quattro tornei (10 goal hp) giocati nel periodo estivo e . Il più atteso, l’Open du Soleil, è stato vinto dal Battistoni Polo Team per la terza volta consecutiva: un record mai raggiunto nella storia del club. Per il debutto di Giordano Magini, con i suoi 22 annni appena fatti il più giovane della squadra, si è trattato di un’esperienza sicuramente da incorniciare . “Sono rimasto impressionato dalla bellezza del club e dall’organizzazione generale : tutto curato nei minimi particolari. Un impianto magnifico con quattro campi di gioco, uno di allenamento, palestra, club house e ristoranti. È stata una trasferta ovviamente molto emozionante e con i miei compagni abbiamo trovato raggiunto facilmente la migliore intesa, elemento fondamentale per il risultato in uno sport come il nostro.” Giordano Magini, che dopo i risultati della scorsa estate ha visto aumentare il suo handicap da 1 a 2 , si può dire sia cresciuto in sella (prime esperienze a 6 anni) con dedizione monotematica sulla disciplina del polo. La passione l’ha ereditata da papà Gianluca, uno dei soci giocatori più attivi del Roma Polo Club, il circolo dove Giordano ha costruito il suo curriculum di giocatore. Ora frequenta la facoltà di Economia all’ateneo romano di Roma Tre ed ha più libertà di programmare la presenza nei tornei. “Ho montato sempre e solo cavalli da polo – racconta – e devo ringraziare mio padre che mi ha portato sempre con sé se sono riuscito a crescere in fretta sui terreni di gioco. A 11 anni ho partecipato in Argentina la Coppa Podrillos che è il primo impegno in cui si misurano i ragazzi che hanno ambizione in questa disciplina. Sono stato l’unico bambino italiano ad averlo fatto. Secondo le regole in Italia ho dovuto aspettare fino al compimento dei sedici anni prima di partecipare ad un torneo”. Le soddisfazioni sono però arrivate in fretta per Giordano. “Il primo impatto con l’estero è stato nel 2018 quando ho fatto parte della squadra italiana per gli Europei in Azerbaijan mentre il primo Campionato Italiano l’ho fatto nel 2017”. Nella bacheca dei premi ci sono già due medaglie d’argento conquistate negli Assoluti del 2017 e 2018. Sembra proprio che stoffa da vendere ne abbia: l’ingresso nel team di Alessandro Barnaba non poteva essere migliore. In bocca al lupo Giordano e Battistoni polo Team!

BAT T IST ONI P O L O T E A M : A V E RY S UC C ES S F U L S EAS ON IN S T. T ROP EZ The Battistoni Polo Team played a real leading role in the 2020 summer season at the St. Tropez Polo Club. Captained by Alessandro Barnaba and including the Argentinean brothers Juan and Piero Auleche (aged 24 and 29) this team literally dominated the stage winning three out of the four 10 goal hp tournaments played in the course of the summer. The most important one, the Open du Soleil, was won by the Battistoni Polo Team for the third year in a row, a record never before achieved in the club’s history. This was most certainly an unforgettable experience for Giordano Magini, who was making his debut with the team aged just 22 and the youngest member of the team. “I was greatly impressed by the beauty of this club as well as the overall organisation. Even the tiniest details are taken care of. It is a wonderful facility with four polo fields, one for training, a gym, a club house and restaurants. This was obviously a very exciting trip and all the team members easily established an understanding, which is an essential element for achieving results in a sport like ours.” One could say that Giordano Magini, whose handicap was raised from 1 to 2 following the summer’s results, grew up in the saddle since he started to ride when he was six, devoting himself exclusively to polo. He inherited his passion from his father Gianluca, one of the most active members of the Rome Polo Club, the club at which Giordano built his CV as a player. He has now enrolled in the Faculty of Economics at Roma Tre University and is freer to plan what tournaments he can play in. “I have always only ridden polo ponies – he says – and must thank my father who always took me everywhere with him, allowing me to make progress quickly on the playing fields. When I was just eleven, I played in Argentina in the Podrillos Cup, the first event held for young people eager to become top players. I was the only Italian child to have done that. As established by the rules in Italy, I had to wait until I was sixteen to play in a tournament.” That said, satisfactions came quickly for Giordano. “My first experience abroad came in 2018 as a member of the Italian Team selected for the European Championship played in Azerbaijan, while I played in my first Italian Championship in 2017”. His awards showcase already contains two silver medals won the 2017 and 2018 Italian Championships. He appears to have an immense amount of talent and joining Alessandro Barnaba’s team was a great success. Best of luck Giordano and the Battistoni Polo Team!

The gold medal was won by Lombardy, accompanied to Rome by its trainer Marco Visconti - Responsible for the Development of Polo in Northern Italy and his wife Domitilla Lenzi. The couple has become seriously involved in the Pony Club Polo Project and are working hard to involve pony clubs in Lombardy that are specialised in pony games so as to create new young polo teams. Marco contributes a great deal thanks to his passion for polo and his experience as a player, while Domitilla brings to the table her experience as a rider who started on ponies when she was 8-years-old and also rode in the show jumping European Championships. Together with instructors provided by the Federation, they assist instructors, teaching them the potential of polo for their club members with their ponies. The ponies accustomed to Mounted Games are ready to be used for children’s polo.
