Round the Island Race Entry Opens Entries are open for the Round the Island Race, which is being held on 25 June. The race continues to live up to its reputation as a ‘Race for All’ – welcoming sailors from all over the world, with professional sailors, keen amateur crews, families and first-time racers competing on the same race course. Race director, David Atkinson said: “In 2021, the 90th year of the race, our expectations were exceeded when we welcomed more than 1,200 boats and 8,000 competitors, who enjoyed an absolutely magical extravaganza on the waters around the Isle of Wight.

“We hope to build on this success and attract a range of boats from the UK and abroad to experience the race and hopefully onshore hospitality in Cowes this year. “The ISC and Race Team are delighted to welcome leading innovation companies Marathon Watch and B&G as new Race Partners. Their support, alongside our long-standing partners Helly Hansen and Chelsea Magazines, will make a big difference and ensure we stage a world-class event for the many sailors, spectators and followers.” Early Bird entries close on 26 February. www.roundtheisland.org.uk

Montgomery explosion concerns including the nearby oil and gas facilities in Sheerness leading to mass damage and potential loss of life”. So, in June work lasting around two months to remove the masts will begin. In a statement, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “Ongoing monitoring and assessment of the SS Richard Montgomery has identified that
the masts may be placing undue strain on the rest of the vessel structure. “In light of this, the decision has been made to seek to reduce the height of the masts in order to maintain the integrity of hull and minimise the likelihood of structural collapse of the vessel.” The wreck is under 24-hour surveillance and is protected by a 500m exclusion zone.
the hearts of so many people. We are delighted she will be at the show to kick start what will be a jam-packed event.” Pip said: “I am honoured to be opening the BoatLife Live show. I really want to help encourage as many people as possible to get out on the water and experience the freedom of sailing, boating or whatever you choose to do. So I am delighted to be able to welcome people to what promises to be a great celebration of boats and boating.” The show ran a competition to give one lucky person, group of friends or family, the chance to participate in the opening. Show exhibitor, Freedom Boat Club, is providing a skippered boat trip and lunch in Portsmouth to the winners. boatlifeevents.com Turn to page 21 to read our three-page BoatLife Live preview and ticket offer.
GET READY FOR COWES WEEK Entries for the iconic Cowes Week have opened with Super Early Bird discounts available until 18 February. Having run a successful regatta last year, despite Covid restrictions, the team are excited about plans for this year. On the water, the racing will follow a similar format with more starts off the Royal Yacht Squadron line and a roving Committee Vessel, able to be located to make best use of the conditions on the day. The race teams have been working throughout the winter to address issues around shortening courses and new plans are in place to make that a smoother process across all 42 fleets within the regatta. A new one design class for Sonata’s has been introduced to reflect its strong activity in Cowes over the past few years. They have also added a class for the FarEast 28 who are intending to hold their European Championships at Cowes Week. On shore, the event will continue its legendary and wide ranging social programme kicking off with the Cowes Week Opening Party on 30 July, for which DJ Mark Covell has already been re-booked. Based on competitor feedback, an updated pricing structure has been

The pricing bands are now broken down into 1m increments and start at 7m rather than 9m, which will lead to more consistency in what different boats are paying, irrespective of their overall length. February is the month of love, and here in the All at Sea office we are loving all the boat show news that keeps arriving. It is already shaping up to be an unforgettable year of boating and we cannot wait. Luckily for us, then, we do not have to wait long as there are two big events happening this very month and we have got previews of them both in this issue. Over on page 21 you will find everything you need to know about a brand-new show coming to the NEC Birmingham including a show map and exhibitor guide. Many of you might recall visiting past boat shows at the NEC when they were combined with caravanning. BoatLife Live, though, is completely different and one we are very excited to check out. There will be lots of big names from the world of boating, along with loads of boats and kits to get you ready for the season ahead. Following BoatLife Live, later in the month, is the newly named RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show. Along with its new name, it has a new home at Farnborough International. It will be interesting to see what visitors think of the new venue. In the meantime you can read all about the show on page 18. Those are both on the calendar for this month, but coming up in the spring is the return of the South Coast Boat Show at Ocean Village Marina. This free to enter show is proving to be a real hit with boaters, and we expect this year to be no different. As well as the South Coast Boat Show MDL Marinas have been busy planning the return of the Green Tech Boat Show. They have big ambitions for the event this year, and with environmental issues a long-term problem, this is an important as well as interesting show. So when it comes to switching to greener options this year there is only one place to be. You can read more about both MDL shows on page 10, plus there are plenty more event updates in this month’s news pages.

One that really caught my eye was the teaming up of Dee Caffari and Shirley Robertson in the 2022 Double Handed Offshore Season. What an amazing collaboration and we cannot wait to see how they get on. We will keep you updated in the paper of course, but you can also follow their progress and can catch up with other boating news on the All at Sea website and in our weekly newsletter, which you can sign up for at www.allatsea.co.uk. Before I leave you to enjoy the paper, do not forget to enter this month’s competitions. As well as a fascinating book which combines the two great hobbies of Lego and boats, we are giving away a fantastic Aqua Parka and Wet Bag courtesy of Gill. This is a great piece of kit for the season ahead, which we have definitely got our eye on! Entry details can be found on page 28. Good luck. Image: UK Crown Copyright 2021

Victory was officially opened as a museum ship to the public by King George V on 17 July 1928 and has since welcomed more than 30 million visitors. The ship’s custodian, the National Museum of the Royal Navy, has ambitious plans for the next conservation step of Lord Nelson’s celebrated survivor from the Battle of Trafalgar. THE DREAM OFFSHORE TEAM
Two of Britain’s most decorated female sailors are teaming up for the 2022 Double Handed Offshore Season. Dee Caffari and Shirley Robertson will be racing a new Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300, supplied by SeaVentures UK, in seven offshore races culminating in the gruelling 1,805nm Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race. One of the sport’s most accomplished offshore sailors, Dee Caffari boasts a remarkable career that includes six laps of the planet, three of them solo. She has also achieved an incredible sixth place finish in the Vendée Globe and a double handed circumnavigation in the Barcelona World Race. She has also completed the Volvo Ocean Race twice, in 2014/15 and again in 2017/18. Joining Dee Caffari is one of the most successful Olympic female sailors of all time, double Olympic Gold medallist Shirley Robertson. With gold medal wins in Sydney and Athens, Shirley was the first woman to helm a multi hull in the groundbreaking Extreme Sailing Series, the forerunner to today’s big stadium racing circuits, and is a regular on the superyacht racing circuit.
Alongside her sailing feats, Shirley has also built a successful media career, presenting CNN’s monthly documentary series CNN Mainsail for more than a decade. She is also the face of Olympic sailing coverage for the BBC and played a key presenting role in coverage of the 36th America’s Cup from Auckland. She hosts a popular sailing podcast too. Dee and Shirley were rivals throughout last season’s double handed series, the highlight for Shirley being a second place finish in the Rolex Fastnet Race. It was a result that has fuelled her new found love of sailing offshore: “The double handed offshore scene has grown hugely here in the UK, and although it is relatively new to me, the last two seasons have been great racing. I am really looking forward to sailing with Dee for 2022, to be sailing with such an accomplished offshore athlete is very exciting.” The two women have sailed against each other many times over the years, but had never sailed on the same boat before. Dee said: “Sailing with Shirley for the 2022 season is a great opportunity. With
our collective experience, we have a complimentary skill set so really hope to have an edge out on the water. "I am looking forward to gaining an insight into the thorough preparation that such an accomplished Olympian brings to an offshore campaign. I know, from competing against her last season, that Shirley knows how to sail a boat fast, so I am delighted that we will be joining forces for the season ahead.” Dee Caffari recently appeared on Shirley Robertson’s Sailing Podcast, which is available on podcast platforms.
Your thoughts It is hard to believe these two incredible sailors have not raced together before, but we would like to know which other sailors – past or present – you would love to have seen racing together. Post at the All at Sea Facebook page: facebook.com/allatseanewspaper) or send us an email at editor@allatsea.co.uk.

RNLI SUPPORTS THE BOAT RACE
NEW FROM FAIRLINE From Fairline Yachts comes details of its new sportbridge, the Phantom 65, the boat builder’s first sportbridge yacht. Fairline’s CEO, Paul Grys, said: “We are pleased to present our first sportbridge model, offering the enhanced space of a flybridge with the sportiness of our
Targa models. The Phantom name has long been synonymous with Fairline and whilst we have kept the name, that is where the similarities end. "The Phantom 65 is an all-new sportbridge yacht, elegant, dynamic, clean and unfussy in its design, whilst
offering the handling and performance Fairline always delivers.” It is set to splash in June and will debut at Cannes Yachting Festival in September. The Phantom 65 is available from £2,460,000. www.fairline.com
PROSECUTION FOR RIB DRIVER Following a hearing at West Solent Magistrates Court last month Sam Lloyd, from Lymington, was prosecuted for a significant breach of the harbour speed limit and for creating excessive wash which posed a hazard to other craft. After pleading guilty to both offences Mr. Lloyd
was fined £200 for each offence and was ordered to pay £260 costs. Ryan Willegers, Lymington harbour master and chief executive, said: “Mr. Lloyd’s actions were a serious breach of the Lymington Harbour General Directions and posed a significant danger

to himself and other craft. I am grateful that Mr Lloyd recognised this with his guilty plea and through an apology.” The sailor apologised after admitting handling the RIB dangerously in Lymington River at an estimated four times the speed limit.

The RNLI has launched its partnership as the official charity partner of The Gemini Boat Race 2022. Since 2002, the RNLI’s Chiswick lifeboat station has supported The Boat Race with its E-class lifeboat. The crew are on hand to keep the competitors safe, as well as the thousands of spectators who line the banks of the Thames. In 2016, the RNLI bolstered its lifesaving service with the addition of nine Arancia-class lifeboats crewed by lifeguards. These are strategically positioned along the Championship Course to keep the public safe while the tide is incoming. The partnership first took place in 2019, with the aim of increasing awareness of the RNLI’s flagship ‘float to live’ drowning prevention campaign. In addition, this year the RNLI’s Community Safety team will be working with venues and schools along the course to provide lifesaving water safety training and encourage familiarity with throwlines. The partnership aims to raise funds to
support the Thames’ lifesaving service with all proceeds going towards the running costs of the four RNLI stations along the river. Wayne Bellamy, station manager for RNLI Chiswick, said: “2022 will be the twentieth year that my crew and I have supported The Boat Race, and kept competitors and spectators safe. This year also happens to be our station’s 20th birthday. “In that time, we have launched over 4,000 times and rescued almost 2,000 people, and on behalf of our 100 volunteer crew, fundraisers and water safety team, I would like to thank you for your continued support of the RNLI at Chiswick.” Crews from both sides of the teams are already in the thick of training for The Boat Race on 3 April and after two years without a race along the normal course, are eager to welcome spectators to London once again. NEWS SNAPS MASERATI WINS RACE
Maserati Multi70 was the first to cross the finish line of the 8th edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race, organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in collaboration with Yacht Club de France. Skipper Giovanni Soldini and crew sailed across the Atlantic from Lanzarsote to Grenada (2,995nm) in 6 days, 18 hours, 51 minutes and 41 seconds. In second place, some way behind, was Peter Cunningham’s PowerPlay skippered by Ned Collier Wakefield along with British sailors Giles Scott and Miles Seddon (who set the record on this route with Phaedo3 in 2015). Third on the line was Jason Carroll’s Argo skippered by Brian Thompson.
ED BALLS ON STAGE
Ed Balls, former Shadow Chancellor, academic, author and broadcaster, has been confirmed as the headline economist for British Marine’s inaugural National Conference. Ed will be forecasting the future economic landscape for the marine industry. Ed’s talk, which includes a guest panel and interactive audience Q&A session, forms part of a two-day programme. Tickets to the conference are available through British Marine, limited to 300 delegates.
MAIDEN’S WORLD TOUR BEGINS Maiden’s eagerly awaited departure on the 2021-2024 World Tour took place when the iconic yacht left the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club on her 90,000nm journey, skippered by Marie-Claude Kieffer Heys and sponsored by DP World. Together with DP World, Maiden and her new crew will build on the successes of the previous World Tour, raising awareness and funds for girls’ education. They will be engaging with schools, charities, outreach programmes and organisations that are committed to the education of girls through empowering and inspiring girls around the world and changing the narrative around what they can achieve. Maiden’s vision is a world where every girl has access to 12 years of quality education; equipping them to choose their future and fulfil their dreams. However, more than 130 million girls are not in education and after the pandemic, and with ongoing conflicts around the world, it is estimated that an additional 11 million will not return to school or be able to access distance learning opportunities. For the next few months Maiden will make her way through the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean, making a few short stops before final preparations in Palma
for the Trans-Atlantic, to arrive in Florida in April. Maiden will work her way up the East Coast of the USA with stopover hubs in Miami, Palm Beach, Annapolis, New York, Long Island, Boston and Newport. In October Maiden will return to Antigua before sailing to Dakar, Cape Town and Maputo. Commenting on Maiden’s departure Tracy Edwards MBE said: “Following the uncertainty of the past few years, it is great to see Maiden and her new all-female crew sailing again and resuming her mission of empowering girls through education. "Our partnership with DP World, whose own vision is for a better, more equitable world focusing on bringing positive change across three legacy areas of Education, Women’s Empowerment and Oceans aligns perfectly with our own goals and we cannot wait to get started!” During the 2021-2024 World Tour there will also be a focus on encouraging girls into STEM subjects, increasing their life and career choices. Many industries, including maritime, are facing serious skills shortages and companies like DP World are committed to increasing female representation to bring much needed skills and talent into the workforce. www.themaidenfactor.org

Although the Tokyo Olympics were the most expensive on record, the absence of fans actually contributed to a saving of around $1.8 billion. However, although the lack of fans might have saved some money, the year delay caused by Covid undoubtedly increased expenditures. The Games still cost around $13.6 billion, although organisers say final cost data will not be available until the spring. With such huge costs it remains to be seen how eager cities will be to take on the event in future years.

LIVING ON PLASTIC The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, stretching for more than 610,000 square miles between California and Hawaii, has become an ocean habitat for coastal species. It has been reported in Nature Communications that previously coastal animals, such as anemones and hydroids, have been found living on plastic collected from the open ocean. While it is not new for coastal species to move across oceans, previously it would have been on natural materials like seaweed, which would not become a permanent home. Researchers call the new groups of life discovered on the garbage patch neopelagic communities. More is being learnt about how they will impact on pre-existing ecosystems in the ocean and on other coasts they might reach. However, it is clearly yet another way that marine plastic pollution is impacting marine life.

NEWS SNAPS SHEFFIELD MEMORIAL
Veterans of the former Royal Navy destroyer HMS Sheffield are raising £15,000 to install a memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum on the 40th anniversary of her loss. HMS Sheffield was hit – and eventually sunk – by an Argentine missile while assisting with the liberation of the Falklands. It is hoped a monument would serve as a focal point for reunions and a place to respect those who have served in three generations of Sheffields to date. The JustGiving page can be found at shorturl.at/swxX2.
CHEMICAL COCKTAIL
In a report published last month, MPs on the environmental audit committee said: “Rivers in England are in a mess. A chemical cocktail of sewage, agricultural waste and plastic is polluting the waters of many of the country’s rivers. Water companies appear to be dumping untreated or partially treated sewage in rivers on a regular basis, often breaching the terms of permits that on paper only allow them to do this in exceptional circumstances.” However the report said sewage discharges were only part of the problem with agricultural and town runoff also contributing. A number of changes have been called for including changes to monitoring and reporting; read more about this topic in Dougal on Tour on page 27.
SHOW DOUBLE FROM MDL This year MDL Marinas is running The South Coast Boat Show and the Green Tech Boat Show. The popular South Coast Boat Show returns to MDL’s flagship Ocean Village Marina (pictured) for the third time from 6 - 8 May. Featuring some of the industry’s most exciting and innovative power and sail brands, the event will also showcase an extensive range of ancillary services such as associated gear, finance and insurance. “Owing to its carefully curated selection of boats ready to go, this show is an absolute must for serious buyers who are looking to purchase a brand new vessel immediately to get out on the water this coming season, or within the next six to 18 months,” said Tim Mayer, MDL’s sales and marketing director. Brands set to exhibit include Beneteau Power and Sail, Broadblue Catamarans, Dehler, Dufour Yachts, Fjord, Hanse, J/Boats, Jeanneau, Lagoon Catamarans, Moody, Nautitech, Princess, Sealine and X-Yachts. Attendance at the show is free with registration available at www.mdlmarinas. co.uk/events/south-coast-boat-show. Appointments to view boats on display can be made directly with yacht brokers. Following the success of MDL’s first Green Tech Boat Show last year, the show will take place again this year at Queen Anne’s Battery marina, Plymouth from 16 - 18 June. Designed specifically for boat owners wishing to make their boating experience as environmentally friendly and
sustainable as possible, the scope of the Green Tech Boat Show has expanded to incorporate a new trade element. Owing to a collaboration between MDL and Maritime UK South West, the first day of the show will feature an invitation only Clean Marine Innovation Showcase, a unique forum for government, researchers and businesses working towards a cleaner marine environment to come together to network, exchange ideas and highlight new innovations. “Commercially viable solutions are already available for some areas of the sector – buyers just do not know enough about them yet,” said Sheldon Ryan, Maritime UK SW. “In certain areas innovation is required that needs collaboration both within and from outside the sector. As part of the Green Tech Boat Show, the Clean Marine Innovation Showcase enables significant progress to be made in bringing the market together in one place.” The following two days of the Green Tech Boat Show will be open to the public, with a focus on helping boat owners and perspective boat owners understand what is available to them when it comes to making the switch to greener options. “We know that boat owners want to see the changes taking place in their work environments reflected in their leisure time,” Tim said. “But it can be confusing. While an increasing number of companies in the marine world are focused on

bringing green technologies to the fore, some consumers struggle to unpick the sustainable options now available to them.” To address the complexities of green marine technologies, in addition to an extensive range of eco-focused exhibitors, the Friday and Saturday of the show will incorporate an Innovation Hub sponsored by the University of Plymouth, which is among the UK’s leading proponents of clean maritime research and innovation.
Tim said: “Our aim with the Green Tech Boat Show, and its new Innovation Hub, is to present as much information as possible to the boating public in a simple and practical way. Showcasing the many different green technologies next to each other will allow people to understand what is available, and how it works so that they can have a greener, more sustainable boating experience.” www.mdlmarinas.co.uk/boat-shows

COMEDY FERRY
American comedians Pete Davidson and Colin Jost, in partnership with Manhattan real estate broker and comedy club owner Paul Italia, have bought a decommissioned ferry boat, the John F Kennedy, for $280,000. According to Paul Italia the plan is to turn it into a live entertainment space. Built-in 1965, the ferry was the oldest in the Staten Island fleet when it was retired last autumn due to mechanical failures.

Britain’s biggest inland waterways event, the Crick Boat Show is expected to attract more than 26,000 visitors to Crick Marina. The event, which takes place near Daventry in Northamptonshire, will be held across the Bank Holiday Weekend celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee (3 - 5 June), with an extra Trade & Preview Day on 2 June. As well as showcasing the inland waterways industry with nearly 300 exhibitors, the show offers a fantastic day out with dozens of boats to view, free boat trips, seminars on boat ownership, live music, children’s activities, a real ale marquee and a variety of food and drink stalls. Peter Johns, publisher of Waterways World and show director, said: “Crick Boat Show is firmly established as the top destination for waterways enthusiasts looking to buy a new boat, upgrade or improve their existing boat, for newcomers wanting to get afloat for the first time and for those seeking a day out by the water. “Now in its 23rd year, the show hosts the largest display of new inland boats, both

RECORD FOR WILD WAVES Two friends from Gloucestershire and Hampshire have shattered a world record for rowing across the Atlantic, having had no previous ocean or rowing experience. Team Wild Waves' Jessica Oliver and Charlotte Harris, who met at Cardiff University 10 years ago, rowed a gruelling 3,000 miles from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean in 45 days, 7 hours and 25 minutes, knocking five days off the previous female pairs record. The friends, who were taking part in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge, were followed into the harbour by dolphins, and were greeted by applause and an emotional quayside welcome from friends and family who had flown out to celebrate their success. Considered the world’s toughest row, Jessica and Charlotte were one of the first women pairs to complete the
Challenge since 2012, racing against 35 other teams from around the world. As they stepped off their boat, Cosimo, they said they felt exhausted but exhilarated, having rowed two hours on, two hours off continuously since 12 December. Describing the overall experience as unreal, Jessica and Charlotte had to contend with 30ft waves, which capsized their boat at one point, sleep deprivation, bouts of hallucination, severe heat, blisters and callouses on their hands, sharks and birds flying into their faces. The women are raising money for Shelter and Women’s Aid after cases of homelessness and domestic abuse rocketed during the pandemic, and have so far raised more than £42,000. They will also be holding a black tie Charity Ball on 13 May in London to continue to raise money for both charities. www.teamwildwaves.com

RYA Yachtmaster of the Year Kent sailor, 25-year-old Harriet Averns has won the RYA Yachtmaster® of the Year award for her exceptional demonstration of sailing skills during her RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence exam. Harriet was presented with the prestigious trophy by Richard Falk, RYA director of training and qualifications, at Trinity House in London. Harriet said: “I could not believe it when I found out! I really struggled with my confidence and believing in myself in the lead up to the exam, but now that it has sunk in it has given me a massive boost.” Richard Falk added: “In most years more than 3,000 people from around the world undertake the exam for the RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence and, as always, the calibre of successful candidates was extremely high. To be selected as the best is an incredible achievement and one Harriet should be extremely proud of.” Harriet started sailing with the Ocean Youth Trust when she was at school. An RYA Competent Crew course and taking part in the Tall Ships Race in the Baltic confirmed her love of all things outdoors and on the water. "Having planned to go to university to study International Business, Harriet’s plans changed when she was diagnosed with Myalgic
Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and had to leave school early. She began researching alternative career pathways and, once recovered, signed up for a ‘Zero to Hero’ Watersports Instructor course which led her to three summer seasons in the Mediterranean teaching windsurfing, windfoiling, dinghy sailing and powerboating. With aspirations to take the next steps in her career on the water, Harriet received a grant through UKSA’s Milo Hanlon Bursary scheme and completed the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence in 2020. After completing her exam Harriet volunteered for a non-profit marine conservation organisation. Working alongside her partner Luke, she returned to the Mediterranean in 2021 to run flotilla holidays in Croatia and looks forward to progressing further in the marine industry. Harriet said: “The marine industry enables you to travel to corners of the world you would not have otherwise known existed and there are so many different avenues you can go down. I love the way being on the water brings people confidence, but it is also very humbling with endless learning opportunities and appreciation for the environment.”
More women taking superyacht course
UKSA has reported a 150 per cent increase in the number of women undertaking its Superyacht Cadetship from 2020 to 2021. The Isle of Wight based charity, which provides life-enhancing water-based adventures, education and maritime training, saw an increase in the number of women and also a 26 percent increase in students taking up the course overall. Available to those aged 18 - 25, the fouryear programme is designed to train the future officer of the superyacht industry and was created with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. It equips graduates with a strong foundation of knowledge, alongside offering a realistic understanding of what it takes to succeed in a career in the superyacht industry. Cadets also have the opportunity to undertake a Foundation Degree in Operational Yacht Science during phase one
and three of the Superyacht Cadetship, which is awarded by the University of Plymouth. The option gives additional careers and training pathways into different sectors in the maritime industry. In 2021, UKSA signed the She of the Sea Pledge, a commitment to work together to build a diverse and inclusive yachting industry. Jenny Matthews, She of the Sea founder, said: “Seeing such a dramatic increase in female representation in such a short time indicates the changing tide when it comes to industry stereotypes and traditionally male dominated departments on board. "Providing passionate, career focused individuals of all genders a clear, supportive path forward will be instrumental in creating a robust, diverse and inclusive talent pipeline, and attracting the next generation of yachting professionals.”
Olympic sailing stars honoured A host of the British Sailing Team’s Tokyo 2020 stars were recognised in the New Year Honours List for services to sailing. Hannah Mills is made an OBE after winning gold in the women’s 470 class in Tokyo last summer, becoming the most successful female Olympic sailor of all time. The OBE also recognises Hannah’s environmental campaigning with her charity the Big Plastic Pledge. Eilidh McIntyre, who won gold alongside Hannah in the 470, is made an MBE, as are 49er Olympic champions Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell. British Sailing Team boss Mark Robinson, who led Team GB’s sailors at Tokyo 2020, is also made an MBE. Prior to joining the British Sailing Team in 2017, Mark was performance
manager at Australian Sailing where he led the country’s Paralympic sailors to the top of the medal table at Rio 2016. “I am truly honoured to have received an MBE for services to sailing and am very happy to see a number of our Olympic medallists also recognised,” said Mark. “However none of these successes are down to one person. Success in these pursuits only comes from a group of highly dedicated and relentless individuals that form a team and work as one to execute the task at hand, which we had in abundance within the British Sailing Team throughout this Olympic cycle. This is equally shared with all the outstanding individuals I have had the pleasure of being alongside in this pursuit of excellence.”

UP FOR THE CHALLENGE
Image: McConaghy Boats
American Magic has been confirmed for the America’s Cup, joining Emirates Team New Zealand, INEOS Britannia, Alinghi Red Bull Racing and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team. “It is great to be back in the America’s Cup for AC37, and our pursuit of bringing the trophy home remains the same,” said Terry Hutchinson, president of sailing operations for American Magic. “We have been preparing for AC37 from the moment our time came to an end at AC36 and are a deeply motivated group – all hands on deck – ready to compete and ready to win.” “We are extremely excited to continue our quest to regain the America’s Cup with American Magic,” said Paul M. Zabetakis, the new commodore of the New York Yacht Club. “Upon receiving the Protocol for the 37th Match, we were pleased to find that it contains elements advocated for by the club last spring. "In addition, the Executive Committee received a new proposal from Doug DeVos and Hap Fauth, American Magic principals and club members, that warranted reconsidering our earlier decision to pause our pursuit of AC37.” NYYC successfully defended the trophy 25 times before losing the Cup to Australia II and the Royal Perth Yacht Club in 1983. In the years since, the NYYC has challenged for the trophy four times. The most recent occasion, represented by American Magic, ended prematurely when the team was knocked out of the Prada Cup Challenger Selection Series in Auckland in January 2021 with a memorable capsize. Then, in the spring, NYYC formed an alliance with the Stars+Stripes team rather than American Magic. Stars+Stripes had hoped to take part in the last Cup cycle, but suffered from a lack of funding. However, due to a lack of clarity regarding the
rules, timing and venue for the next Match, NYYC then decided in October, under the club’s previous commodore Christopher J. Culver, to pause its America’s Cup efforts. Now, though, a renewed mutual desire to have American Magic sail on behalf of the club and commit to a campaign for at least two consecutive America’s Cup cycles, prompted the club and American Magic team to join forces again, for the 37th America’s Cup. While winning remains the primary goal, it is not, we are told, the only focal point of the campaign. “The club’s involvement in AC37 must advance our foundational initiatives, including the development of America’s youth sailing talent and a commitment to increasing diversity within our sport,” said Paul Zabetakis. “We will also continue to push for changes to the structure of the competition that can make the event more accessible to challengers, fans and corporate partners.” www.americascup.com FUTURE DATES: n 31 March 2022: Defender to announce Match Venue and approximate event dates n 17 June 2022: New competitors may sail Version 1 AC75’s for 20 sailing days n 31 July 2022: Entry Period Closes n 17 September 2022: Competitors may sail an AC75 Yacht n 30 November 2022: ACE to announce race schedule for the Match n 30 November 2022: ACE to announce racing area for CSS and Match n 31 December 2022: ACE to publish Brand Manual n 31 May 2023: Final cut off for late Challenger entries
AC40 IN PRODUCTION
E40i - The easily placed electric winch The coach roof is the normal place for a winch that operates halyards, reef lines, outhaul and control lines. The E40i winch is built up around an electric motor which is totally integrated in the drum. Only three thin cables are protruding to lead through the coach roof or the deck, no large cutouts and no external motor or gearbox. This makes for uncompromised headroom down below which is normally not the case with electric winches.
The AC75’s younger sister class – the AC40 – is in production. The AC40 hull shape is based on that of the Ac36 winner, Te Rehutai, but is a generational step forward incorporating a number of developments learned after the completion of the last America’s Cup. There are eight AC40s under order with McConaghy Boats, which has been building composite race boats with leading construction technologies for more than 50 years. The first AC40 is expected to be ready to be shipped from the McConaghy facility in July to the Emirates Team New Zealand base in Auckland for its on water commissioning in August. Each successive boat will
be rolled out in five week increments thereafter as the challenging teams take possession and prepare to hit the water. While the America’s Cup teams will be using their AC40s for testing, development and Match race training, and preliminary events, they will be used for both the Women’s and Youth America’s Cup’s as a key tool for creating the pathway into the America’s Cup for women and the next generation of foiling sailors. This pathway has been made all the easier with the added benefit of the availability of the AC40 simulator developed by ETNZ for pre-delivery training. The simulator will also be available to private owners.

THE VOICE OF THE MARINER
Following his appointment as the director of the CHIRP Charitable Trust’s maritime programme, Captain Adam Parnell is seeking to grow awareness of their global safety campaign amongst seafarers, particularly in the leisure and recreational sector. This is a natural progression to his previous job where he was the Tor Bay harbourmaster responsible for the safe running of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham harbours. He joins another CHIRP (Confidential Human-factors Incident Reporting Programme) appointee, Captain Dave Watkins, who is the Trust’s deputy maritime director. CHIRP has been in operation since 2003 and contributes to maritime safety worldwide through the provision of a totally independent reporting system for all who venture on or into the water, including professional and recreational mariners. Adam explained that they receive about 200 reports a year, and have a database of approximately 2,000 incidents, but at present the leisure and recreational sector is under reported. He went on to explain: “By raising awareness of our programme and hopefully increasing the number of reports that we receive, we can go beyond the obvious safety considerations (such as wearing personal floatation devices) to highlight items that might not immediately spring to mind.” This might include such things as the effect of fatigue and stress on a
watchkeeper’s attention span and the unexpected consequences of miscommunication. For example, agreeing with another vessel on VHF about passing safely in a close quarters situation – only to discover at the last moment that each vessel haS interpreted the ‘agreement’ differently. The CHIRP team are proud to be the ‘voice of the mariner’; their programme has the ear of regulators around the world, including the MCA with whom they frequently liaise. Anyone can report a safety concern, near-miss or incident, and once the CHIRP team have sufficient detail they ‘sanitise’ the reports they receive so that even they cannot identify the reporter. This ensures that no-one can face any repercussions for making a report. Every report is assessed to understand the likely human factors that led to the incident, and a sample of these are published every quarter in their Maritime FEEDBACK newsletter. In addition, they also publish an Annual Digest, which is a compendium of the reports published over the preceding 12 months as well as including a number of additional Insight articles that delve deeper into issues of topical maritime interest. You can submit a report online (www. chirpmaritime.org/submit-a-report) or by email (mail@chirp.co.uk). You can also subscribe to their FEEDBACK newsletters at (www.chirpmaritime.org/subscribe) as well as download their Annual Digest.
On 13 February 1997, a huge storm near the coast of Cornwall pushed 62 containers off the cargo ship Tokio Express. One was filled with nearly five million pieces of Lego, many of which were themed around the sea. Beachcombers in the southwest of England soon began finding plastic octopuses, spear guns, scuba tanks, cutlasses, flippers and even dragons on their shores – pieces that are still washing up today. Adrift is an insight into the mysterious world of oceans and tides, shining a light on this lost Lego and other cargo spills, as well as their lingering legacies in the sand and sea. It also captures the magic of beachcombing while cataloguing some of the weird and not so wonderful plastic items now found on so many shores. POWER TALK
Simon Everett is the man in the know when it comes to what is being launched and the latest technologies emerging in marine engines. Get the inside scoop right here…
YAMAHA’S HARMO Electric propulsion has been part of the Yamaha electric engineering expertise portfolio for many years, in the form of trolling motors, golf carts, wheelchairs, electric assisted bicycles and a host of other electric propulsion platforms. HARMO is a brand new, integrated propulsion and steering control system. Taking smart technology to the next level the system provides more efficient electric propulsion than other systems with a similar sized propeller by utilising rim drive to increase the thrust at slower speed. It can therefore be used to power larger boats with less power consumption than traditional equivalents. Currently the system has been tested on boats up to 21ft and has provided vibration free, ultra-quiet running. The steering system is based upon the proven Helmaster joystick control normally only found on the top end of conventional outboards. HARMO is fitted in a similar way to an outboard motor, utilising a transom bracket and features a trim and tilt function that allows the propeller to be lifted clear of the water for beaching or for when moored for any length of time. HARMO goes through the same rigorous testing procedure as every Yamaha outboard motor and demonstrates the possibility and capability of electric propulsion in suitable marine sectors.
This will fuel the used market and the prices of second hand engines will remain high, as demand is definitely outstripping supply. The component supply chain is also being affected, so get your engine serviced sooner rather than later.

The availability situation has not changed for the better and back orders are slowly being filled, but the delivery of new engines has slowed to a trickle as Japan has only just come out of Covid lockdown. It is not just the outboard manufacturers that are behind, but the component manufacturers as well. If you want a parallel, look at the car manufacturers and how they are struggling for certain components. Because of this situation my inkling is that the theft of outboards will become even more prevalent and you should increase your security. Having insurance is not going to be enough to keep you boating as you may well get your payout, but if there are no engines available you will have to join the back of the queue to get your replacement which, if your engine was stolen now, might be months away.

MOTOR ACADEMY As we gradually come to live with the disruptive virus and a new season is heralded, thoughts turn to matters of a boating nature. With the popularity of using a small inflatable taking the marine industry by storm and increasing the demand for outboards, we have received news from Yamaha about their Motor Academy. When we, as customers, go into a dealer we rightly expect high quality service, both in terms of technical ability and a personal experience.
To enhance these aspects of their entire dealer network, Yamaha have rolled out a futuristic training programme that will focus on the five founding values of the institute: motivation, care, knowledge, passion and satisfaction. The aim is to set Yamaha dealers as the example to aspire to and to improve the business through customer satisfaction. Give them time though, they have 2,800 dealers around the world to train.

A
longside the much-loved dinghy sailing features, this year the show, running from 26 - 27 February, is expanding to also showcase windsurfing, wingsurfing and foiling, paddleboarding and more. With hands-on ‘have a go’ experiences, demos from the legends, world class talks and exhibitors offering everything you need to get afloat, it is the perfect place to get prepared for your 2022 on the water. “The new venue and growth in participation of all watersports has presented us with an opportunity to bring the industry together to offer an even bigger show, with more adventures and activities,” RYA shows and promotions manager Celia Edgington explained.
What’s on for 2022?
As well as the new additions, the show will be full to the brim with much-loved dinghy and watersports displays and more than 100 exhibitors including class associations, boat builders, holiday companies and some of the biggest names in marine retail. Exhibitors include RS Sailing, Rooster, Musto, Harken and the RNLI. World class speakers, coaches and medallists will provide expert advice on the Suzuki Main Stage and Knowledge Zone hosted by professional sailor Hannah Diamond and instructor and presenter Lee Timothy.
On the Main Stage…
Members of the British Sailing Team will be at the show
Whether you are a sailor, paddler or windsurfer, do not miss British Sailing Team meteorologist, Simon Rowell, with his expertise and essential top tips for forecasting afloat. Marking the 70th live ‘Dinghy Show’, historian (and All at Sea contributor) David Henshall returns to the show to talk about the last 70 years of performance sailing and how it has developed to become more inclusive. Meanwhile, the ‘adventure cruising talk’ will inspire those seeking an adventure, no matter what their age - from sailing with the family to camping on the water.
The Knowledge Zone
Fancy picking up some crewing tips from an Olympic Gold medallist? Eilidh McIntyre (Saturday) and Anna Burnett (Sunday) will be joining coach Stevie Morrison to share their top tips in the knowledge zone. The ever-popular Mark Rushall is also returning to talk racing tactics, so whether you are looking to understand wind shifts better, start fast, use a race compass or get round the marks first, this talk will get you there.
Watersports Stage
Brand new for 2022 is the Watersports Stage, which will be home to the sport’s most respected personalities with the knowledge to help you improve be it going faster, further or trying something new!
“The show is the perfect place to spend time with the dinghy sailing and watersports community.”
Do not miss talks on how to get started in windsurfing, wingsurfing and foiling, advice on the best winging kit to use in different conditions, transitioning from windsurfing to wingfoiling and how to crack the perfect carve gybe, all hosted on the Watersports Stage by windsurfing legend Peter Hart.
New adventures for all ages
If you and your family love messing about on the water and being active outdoors, the show promises to be a great day out with plenty to inspire and entertain all ages including sailing, windsurfing and winging simulators, an activity pool and plenty of competitions. Best of all kids go free all weekend! Do you know a youngster who has set their sights on becoming a future medallist? The show is the place to be if you want to rub shoulders with members of the British Sailing Team and other heroes. Head to Sailors Corner to chill out with Q&A sessions, take part in athletes’ challenges and attend the autograph
signings to capture your ‘insta moment’. Younger visitors can explore the show with the famous Dinghy Show Treasure Hunt, hunting and collecting clues and stamps to win some amazing prizes. The show is the perfect place to spend time with the dinghy sailing and watersports community. At the new venue you will be able to relax with a drink and catch up with old friends in The Clubhouse, which you will find in the heart of the show. Each year the clubhouse will be designed to reflect the RYA Club of the Year winner, so this year it will be 2021 winners Port Dinorwic Sailing Club Clwb Hwylio Y Felinheli. Celia concluded: “We are delighted to once again be offering a live show dedicated to being on the water, however you like to get afloat. As well as more space, the new location also offers good transport connections, plenty of free on-site parking and reasonably priced local accommodation options for visitors and exhibitors. We hope to see you there!”

on your dream holiday this year with the latest news and offers
Luxury charter ScicSailing charters a small fleet, called gulets, based around Bodrum. All yachts sail along the south west coast of Turkey and some of the Greek islands. The charter business has been in touch to let us know about an eight-person yacht joining their fleet. As a result they now have two luxury yachts with charters fully customisable, including catering, drinks and wines on board. Their luxury yachts can only be chartered on an exclusive basis, while their comfort yachts can be enjoyed on a cabin charter basis, including solo travellers, or chartered exclusively for friends and family. scicsailing.eu
Cruising in Scotland
Image: leoks/Shutterstock
Despite all this talk about heading abroad, UK holidays are going to remain incredibly popular this year, with Scotland the destination of choice for many people. Kraken Travel offers a Scottish West Coast and Hebrides week long cruise on an Oyster 62 yacht with July and August dates costing from £2,000pp. Surrounded by beautiful landscapes, this cruise offers the opportunity to spot wildlife - anything from sea otters to basking sharks - before settling down in the evening with a Scotch from a local distillery. Additional Scottish adventures with Kraken include a nine-day Hebridean Whisky Tour in the autumn costing from £1,125pp and, also in the autumn, a Caledonian Canal trip on board a 1903 Tall Ship. There are a number of other UK Tall Ship trips available, from Scotland right down to the South Coast. kraken.travel
Holiday bookings up Sailing Holidays has updated their brochure for 2022, and you can view it online. They tell us their phone lines have been busy, and although there are plenty of one-week holidays still available, two-week dates are filling up more quickly. If a one-week holiday at Easter sounds tempting, the Greek islands would provide a welcome escape. There are flotillas departing from Corfu on 17 and 24 April priced from £655pp. www.sailingholidays.com

“Crazy demand for boats” Just as Sailing Holidays have reported a high demand for getaways, so too has PlainSailing. com who saw “crazy demand for boats in 2021”. They were having to turn away customers because there were no boats available to charter in Croatia, Greece or Italy. History looks set to repeat itself this summer as demand remains high. Not only are sailing holidays relatively Covid-friendly, they make good ‘push the boat out’ holidays for people who have saved having not been abroad for a while. There there are still many charters that have been rolled over from early 2021, as well as many sailors who have not been sailing in the sunshine for the last two summers and are keen to do so.
The problem has been exacerbated by the lack of available boats for charter companies to buy to add to their fleets. The upsurge in the popularity of sailing during the pandemic means that there are waiting lists of over a year to buy boats from many large boat builders, and the majority of 2022 boats are going to private sailors. PlainSailing.com therefore recommend that anyone thinking of sailing in the sunshine should probably start making plans, as there is not likely to be much available for ‘last minute charter’ because the boats will be booked well ahead of time - particularly in the school holiday months of July and August. Travel rules up-date* • Fully vaccinated passengers (two doses) and under-18s do not need a pre-departure test two days before travelling to the UK. • Covid tests for fully vaccinated travellers arriving in England and Scotland are being scrapped from 11 February and under-18s will no longer need to take a lateral flow test two days after they arrive in England or Scotland. • Those who are not fully vaccinated will no longer have to self-isolate on arrival or take a day eight test. However, they will have to show proof of a negative Covid test taken two days before they travel and take a post-arrival PCR test. • Passengers still need to fill in a passenger locator form. • From 3 February, 12 to 15-year-olds in England can prove their vaccination status via the digital NHS
pass for international outbound travel. • Wales and Northern Ireland have not yet announced when they will relax their current restrictions. • You need to check the UK Foreign Office website for entry requirements of any countries you visit. • Covid passes issued in the UK can be used throughout the EU to show proof of vaccination - either digitally or as a printed download (as long as it is dated later than 1 November 2021). Basically, all that fully vaccinated people will have to do to when they travel to the UK is verify their status via a passenger locator form, which is being simplified. In addition, from the end of February, people will be given an extra day to fill out the form before they travel. *Correct at the time of writing.

BELOW-THE-WATERLINE REPAIRS
A beginners’ guide, from AkzoNobel, to common hull problems including what to look out for and how frequently to check the hull. Here is Windrush, coated with Awlgrip HDT. Image: Onne van der Wal
J
ust like your car or home, there is a level of maintenance that is required to keep your boat functioning well. Part of this maintenance includes ensuring the bottom of your boat is in good condition, especially if it is kept in the water. Many boaters use antifouling paint on the bottom of their boat to keep barnacles, worms, slime and algae from attaching to the hull and increasing drag, which affects the boat’s manoeuvrability and could cause you to burn more fuel while underway. Applying antifouling to the hull is one of the most common and important paint applications on a boat. These coatings work by delivering a controlled, steady release of biocide (such as copper) from the paint surface into the microscopic layer of water next to the hull. It is this layer of biocide that stops the fouling from settling. Modern antifouling paints are specifically formulated to release just the right amount of biocide to keep the surface clean throughout the season, without the need to scrub your boat.
CHECK FIRST
One of the first things you must check prior to painting the bottom of your boat is the condition of the existing coating - if there is one. You want to see if there is any paint flaking or peeling, and A-Salt Weapon is coated with Awlgrip HDT. Image: Onne van der Wal
to what extent. Typically, if it is more than 40 per cent of the bottom hull, you may want to have a professional assessment and then discuss options for removing it. Flaking is caused by using antifouling paints that are not compatible with each other. Another reason could be that there is too much paint applied over many seasons, and the base layers are unable to carry the excessive weight of the many coats of paint. This would mean you need to remove the paint to either the substrate or epoxy barrier system and start anew.
GETTING IT RIGHT
The key to a successful application is ensuring you use an antifouling that works for your needs, as well as determining if you want a single season or multi-seasonal. Multi-seasonal allows the boat to come in and out of the water without the coating losing its effectiveness, meaning you are then unlikely to need to repaint the next season. AkzoNobel Yacht Coatings, for example, have products for all types of boats, suiting all waters and conditions, as well as a full range of products that deliver single to multi-seasonal protection, like the International Micron range for power and sailboats. You need to make sure that you check the compatibility of any new paint with the old paint,
and if you are not sure, you can use International Primocon primer as a sealer and then apply your International antifouling.
METAL MATTERS
One other key area to keep in mind is the underwater metals, such as the outboard engine, trim tabs and running gear. These typically use metals like aluminium, stainless steel or bronze. These are areas with more wear due to the amount of abrasion occurring with the water passing through them, and so need maintenance each year. You need to properly prep bare metal with an aggressive sanding and then use a primer like International Propeller Primer, InterProtect epoxy primer or an underwater metal primer like Primocon, followed by the appropriate antifouling. You want to avoid applying a copper-based antifouling over aluminium substrates, as the difference in the metals can lead to corrosion through the process of electrolysis. The primer is important as it provides a base for the antifouling to adhere to and adds a level of corrosion protection from the water. For more information on AkzoNobel products and for step-by-step custom guides to get your boat ready for the spring season, visit yachtcoatings.com.

KEITH RYMAN
Five decades and still going strong - how International’s Keith Ryman has devoted his life to yacht coatings.

HOT TOPIC
We discuss important topics with marine industry experts who share their opinions and top tips to help you get the most from your boating.
S
ince the 1970s, Keith Ryman has acquired an unrivalled understanding of yacht coatings - having devoted the majority of his career to leading development in laboratories in New Zealand - before becoming an integral part of the International brand’s Asia Pacific sales function. “Sometimes, I do not even know what it is that I know, until someone asks me a question. I have learned a lot over the years,” Keith admits. Yet, at first all Keith had his eyes on was a stop-gap. He recalls: “When I finished university in 1972 I sailed across the Pacific and spent some time in Hawaii. After I got back to New Zealand I saw a job advertised in a small chemicals plant and thought if I can work there until Christmas I will see about getting a proper job in the New Year.” Aged just 22, Keith had joined the New Zealand brand Epiglass, which became part of International yacht coatings in 1989. “I came on board as a junior chemist and was thrown into this pretty dingy lab with three or four others. We were pretty much left to learn everything ourselves. At that stage the products were fairly basic - there were a few epoxies and a couple of top coats.” From there Keith devoted himself to product development: “Mostly it has all been laboratory and practical work on the bench throughout my career. I have never been much into paperwork. I like being in the backroom formulating products.” One of the products he is most proud of is the HT9000 multipurpose epoxy resin system for professional and DIY use. It became an immediate hit in New Zealand before it was launched into the UK and US markets too. However, it is not just the development of products that kept Keith part of the International brand - it was the development of young talent also. He explains: “At any one point we would have four or five chemists working on products in the lab. Over the years we had a lot of young people come through, and it was always really rewarding to see them grow and move on to bigger and better things.” Keith’s unrivalled expertise is being put to great use on International yacht coating’s social media platforms. He has become the go-to guy for answering customer queries that come in via Instagram and Facebook. “It is good to impart knowledge,” he says. “Helping people out is the most important part of the job. I enjoy calls from reps saying we have a problem - it requires you to think outside the box. That is the fun part for me.” Having been at the epicentre of the Asia Pacific yacht coatings industry for half a century, what does Keith think the future holds? “When I started, just about every second person had a boat. But that percentage has been steadily declining for a number of years. The growth, in our region, in particular is being driven by the superyacht market. “Today we use much of the same technology as when I started. We have just got better at producing it and making an increased quality. But ultimately, it is about the people more than it is about the products. “When you continue to have such passionate people in this business, like we do at International, then the future is in good hands.” But what about Keith himself? Does he plan to notch up a sixth decade in the business? “My intention was to retire in 2020, but it did not happen because of Covid. Then it was going to happen in 2021 - but they asked me to stay on to the end of the year, so we will see what happens.” As it stands Keith now plans on retiring in 2022, but he has made no fixed plans for this as of yet…

isitors to this new preseason show will be able to browse three halls filled with more than 100 boats from powerboats and RIBs to narrowboats, as well as many holiday and equipment companies. The four-day show has been designed to give the whole family a day out, celebrate the boating lifestyle and bring people together. It will be the ideal time to catch up with friends, discover what is new in the industry and make your next purchase. Live talks, demonstrations, bars and restaurants will complement the boats on display and make it both an enjoyable and welcoming show. Pip Hare, the eighth woman in history to complete the Vendée Globe, will be opening the show on 17 February before joining Mark Covell on the show stage. They will chat about Pip’s experiences, motivations and how her boating journey started from the landlocked East of England. Richard Dove, BoatLife director, explained: “There was only one choice for us. Pip is a great advocate for boating and captures the hearts of so many people. We are delighted she will be at the show to kick start what will be a jam-packed event.” Pip Hare said: “I am honoured to be opening the BoatLife Live show. I really want to help encourage as many people as possible to get out on the water and experience the freedom of sailing, boating or whatever you choose to do. So I am delighted to be able to welcome people to what promises to be a great celebration of boats and boating.”
WHAT’S ON SHOW?
Discussing the boats on show, Richard Dove said: “Our target for the first show was 100 boats, and we have reached that goal. We have a great mix of boats from world-leading brands, including highend boats such as the Fairline 50 GT and affordable boats.” Boats and brands exhibiting include Brig, Fairline, Nordkapp, Cranchi, Viko Yachts and Sea-Doo, and there will be several boat debuts to look out for such as the RYCK 280, Seven Seas Hermes Speedster, Swordfish F80 and Polycraft Tuffy 300. Ben Nichols, Clipper Marine, said: “We are really excited to finally have a dedicated boat show catering for the North of England – it will be great to be back in the Midlands to meet all those boaters who do not make it down to the Southampton Boat Show and other southern shows. Stock is very scarce at the moment, but we will have boats on display for immediate delivery.” Alongside the many boats, a fantastic choice of equipment companies will be attending, including Raymarine, English Braids, Barrus Marine, Bainbridge, Aquafax and B&G. Other marine leisure brands, such as Aqueduct Marina, Freedom Boat Club and Pro Marine Finance, are also set to exhibit.
THINGS TO DO
With a replica traditional riverside pub at BoatLive Life, along with a Mediterranean bar, there will be lots of opportunities to catch up with friends and also make new ones while listening to live music and enjoying the atmosphere.

Q
YOU HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE IN THE EVENTS INDUSTRY – HOW DID THE IDEA FOR A NEW BOAT SHOW COME ABOUT? RD: I have previously been involved with the Southampton Boat Show and always loved that show. There is so much interest in boating and watersports at the moment and people staying in the UK , so it is a great time to introduce a new show dedicated to the UK market.
Q
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO HOLD THE SHOW AT THE NEC BIRMINGHAM?
RD: So many boat brands were already talking about the Midlands for a new show, so actually all we did is listen to what companies were asking for. We had a lot of support from boat dealers before we launched. Holding the show in the Midlands was also a great chance to get the inland sector involved, and the NEC is just a perfect exhibition venue with their road and rail links.
Q
WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE AS THE DIRECTOR OF BOATLIFE LIVE INVOLVE?
FURTHER INFORMATION TICKETS: Ticket (per day): £20 Registered Disabled Ticket: £10 Children 16 and under go free Quote AAS30 to get 30 per cent off the ticket. Enter the code at the Buy Tickets page at boatlifetickets.com/p/boatlifelive RYA offer: www.rya.org.uk/membership/ membership-benefits/boatlife
How to get there: The NEC Birmingham is easy to get to by car, train or plane. The exhibition centre is accessible from all motorways and there are more than 16,000 car parking spaces. It is also a short walk from the train station and there are plenty of hotels and restaurants. Times: 10am – 6pm, Sunday 10am – 5pm Web: boatlifeevents.com
RD: We are a small team so it is all hands-on deck! Yes it is my business but I have been doing a lot of sales too and this has involved many phone calls and meetings. I really loved getting to know all the brands and business owners.
Q
THERE ARE A NUMBER OF SPEAKERS AT THE SHOW. IS THERE A PARTICULAR ONE YOU ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO? RD: We really do have a fantastic lineup, so it is hard to choose. I personally have not heard Pip Hare’s story first-
hand so I am looking forward to that and Dave Haze, the SUP record breaker, has a really interesting story too.
Q
ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR LAUNCHES VISITORS SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR?
RD: We are excited to have quite a few launches including UK and European debuts that will be well worth checking out.
Q
BOATLFE LIFE HAS BEEN PROMOTED AS ‘MORE THAN A BOAT SHOW’. CAN YOU EXPLAIN?
RD: Unlike most events the BoatLife brand will go beyond the show, so we will continue to share stories, ideas and information from our exhibitors. It is important we continue to promote boating and encourage more and more people on the water. Keep your eye out for other events too!
Q
WHEN WILL YOU START PREPARING FOR NEXT YEAR’S BOAT SHOW?
RD: We already have an option in 2023 to take more space, so in many ways the planning has already started!
Q
ARE YOU A SAILOR? IF SO, WHAT BOAT DO YOU SAIL?
RD: Me personally no, but I am looking for opportunities after BoatLife Live to get on the water. The rest of the team are though. Dan’s life is on the water and he has sailed since he was 14-years-old and Hayley does a lot of sea kayaking and paddleboarding in Devon.
Q
TELL US SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU!
RD: I am a bit of an adrenaline junkie and I have done many bungee and parachute jumps. You are never too old to take risks!

Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of leisure boating.
Even Dirtier Water Last month David Henshall looked at the state of our coastal waters and found that pollution was nothing new. This month he looks at the situation as it is today whilst introducing us all to a new word.
The M27 bridge and Swanwick marks the start of the Upper Hamble, a wonderful and undeveloped stretch of the river that is very sensitive to any environmental challenges. Yet currently the toxic mix of oil, rubber deposits and dust from brake linings that collect on the motorway flush straight down into the river. Image: David Henshall
A
s the clocks tick over at 2359:59 and Christmas Day becomes Boxing Day, the whole tone of the festive holiday subtly changes. For the lovers of the water, this means the focus can now shift from family gatherings around the dinner table to the opportunity to get back out afloat, be that a Christmas Cracker race at a local club, the start of the Sydney-Hobart or a motor off to a quiet anchorage to meet up with friends for a drink at anchor. For the really hardy souls amongst us, there is the chance to blow away the Christmas overindulgence by joining in with one of the many Boxing Day plunges into the open water. As the saying goes, ‘whatever floats your boat’, except that this year, a number of the organised swims had to be cancelled. It was not because the conditions were too extreme, far from it, as for much of the UK the Christmas break was mild but damp, with rain in many places. Instead, because it had rained, a number of water companies had once again taken the opportunity to discharge untreated sewage into their nearest water course. In places, this Christmas outpouring of something other than festive goodwill had been so prolonged and with further rain forecast, some of the warnings suggested that the usual four days it would take for the water to be safe again for bathing in could end up being extended into the New Year. Yet incredibly all this is fully legal, as the water industry is allowed to discharge almost unimaginable amounts of untreated sewage into our waterways and seas, often on the flimsiest of excuses. The result is that there are almost 15,000 outlets around the UK where this is happening. When the Government’s postBrexit Environmental Bill was debated back in the autumn a majority of the Conservative MPs, including nearly all of those whose constituencies line the coast from West Dorset to East Sussex, voted for the continuation of the status
quo. Facing an outburst of public anger, this was changed for a demand that the water companies reduce the discharges, but with nothing quantified and without the imposition of a timescale, there are as yet few signs of improvement in our water quality. Just as in Part 1 of this series, we have to take a balanced view and make it clear that whilst the water companies have seen executive pay rocketing alongside generous dividends to shareholders, they are far from the only entities that should be in the dock – and not a marina dock either!
Bridging the divide
One of the most stressed sailing areas for the yachting community is the Hamble River. Once passed a number of busy and popular marinas the river is crossed by the M27 road bridge. Either side of the bridge is the higher ground that defines the Hamble Valley, so when it rains, the water runs downhill towards the bridge, before being funnelled down in culverts then straight into the river.
Any deposits that build up on the road surface can therefore end up being carried down with each new rainfall, but there is an even bigger concern. The M27 is a very busy motorway that carries a great deal of commercial traffic, including a lot of tankers from the oil terminal at Hamble. It would be wrong to be alarmist, but if there were to be an accident and an oil spill, even before the emergency services started to hose everything down, the contents would be following the rainwater path, straight into the river. As part of the M27 upgrade National Highways had pledged to come up with a better solution to ensure the safety of the river below, only to start backtracking on the grounds of costs. This has led Councillor Sean Woodward, who is Chair of the Hamble River Board, to warn that the current situation was an ‘ecological disaster waiting to happen’.
itrogen run o
Even more worryingly is the realisation that in addition to the release of raw sewage and the toxic run-off from the roads, for more than 30 years there has been an even more insidious yet persistent attack on our local waters, as a result of what is called ‘nitrogen run-off’. Some 70 per cent of this is the result of more intensive use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture, which then washes down into streams and rivers and eventually into our coastal waters. In something of a double whammy for our already stressed coastal waters, the problems arising from higher nitrate concentrations tend to be worse in the southern and eastern areas, where drier conditions and a heavier reliance on arable farming see the greatest dependence on fertiliser use. It might be easy to think of this as an abstract problem, but it has a very real impact on those who keep their boats afloat for the majority of the year. An antifoul coating that should have the potential to last up to two full
Lifting and scrubbing off (or a visit to the scrubbing piles) is a messy, time consuming and increasingly expensive task, yet as the rate of weed growth increases, the frequency of getting the bottom cleaned may have to increase. Image: Colin Porteous / Shutterstock
seasons can be quickly overwhelmed by the high growth rates of weed and barnacles in the nutrient rich waters around our marinas and anchorages. At the same time, some of the more effective antifouling paints were found to be highly toxic to the marine environment and were rightly banned. The result has been an increase in the frequency of boats needing to be hauled out and washed/scrubbed off and you only have to look at a mooring buoy or the sides of a marina pontoon to see an amazing degree of growth, even in the colder months of winter.
Bacteria concerns
Of course, with the danger of ambient temperatures rising, there is the risk that the even warmer waters will combine with the pollutants to bring about an even greater amount and diversity of growths. The shallow waters of Chichester Harbour are an ideal breeding ground, with sea-surface temperatures reaching 20°C, a fact that prompted a new series of tests that discovered some worrying Even on an antifouled hull, the rate of growth of weed and barnacles is increasing in the nutrient rich waters. Image: Colin Porteous / Shutterstock
additions to the harbour occupants. We often think of pollution in terms of discarded plastic, or even sewage, but the presence of some new strains of the Vibrio bacteria that have never before been found in UK coastal waters is a genuine cause for concern. Vibrio bacteria comes in several varieties, which can cause ear problems for swimmers and skin infections, whilst another strain is a common cause of gastroenteritis. It is not just those on the water who are at risk but shellfish and other ‘filter feeders’ can be killed by the Vibrio bacteria, with their loss from the food chain having a huge impact on the rest of the wildlife.
Unchecked eutrophication
Just as with the Covid pandemic, which has given us a whole new language, so the growing threat of pollutants to our coastal waters is rich in new words and phrases. Without action, terms such as nitrogen runoff cycles, dead zones and algae blooms will become more commonplace, but if there is one word that will surely end up creeping into our lexicon it will be ‘eutrophication’. This might sound like a high-tech mouthful that will quickly be forgotten, except for the fact that this one word describes how the combination of all these various pollutants come together in our coastal waters, feeding an explosion of growth in weeds and other life forms that should not be there. On the face of it, this does not sound so bad, except for the fact that all this new organic activity robs the water column and all the species that rely on it of the life-giving oxygen they all depend upon. Be you a paddleboarder, kayaker or powerboater, we all want the seas to be alive and rich in diversity, yet that risk of unchecked eutrophication could well result in some of our most cherished sailing areas becoming nothing more than our own ‘dead sea’. Next month: I can ‘sea’ clearly now! In his final look at water quality, Dougal Henshall looks at how the people and the polluters are fighting back to give our coastal waters a better future.

ALL AT SEA FEBRUARY 2022
Shootin’ the Breeze We catch up with David Barrett, or ‘Davey’ as many know him by. Davey has been working at Milford Marina since 2002 and is widely known not just to berth holders but the locals of Milford Haven too.
Q
With your fascinating heritage, how does it feel to be the sixth generation Barrett to work in a maritime career?
BELOW: Davey Barrett is continuing his family’s long association with the waterfront at Milford Haven
Q
Having worked at Milford Marina so long you are no stranger to the boating community, but tell us something that people may not know about you?
DB I have been a member of Angle Lifeboat for eight years and I am currently a deputy launching authority. I am also a member of the Milford Haven Round Table and help with the organising and running of their popular events such as Milford Carnival, the Fireworks Display and Milford Haven Beer Festival. www.milfordmarina.com
DB I think it is nice to keep the ties with the docks going, having worked between both the Dry Dock and the marina for 25 years. Although the Barrett name carries a lot of history it is not just my father’s side that has a nautical past. My grandad on my mother’s side arrived in Milford as a fisherman from the west coast of Ireland in Castletownbere, and he ended up meeting my nan who was working in the braiding room making the fishing nets!
Q
ilford arina has de nitely gone from strength to strength over the past 30 years; what was it like to watch the marina evolve over the time you have worked there?
Q
Growing up in Milford Haven, what ties do you have to Milford Fish Docks?
DB After leaving school my father was employed down here to help maintain trawlers and ships and he carried on working for 40 years around the docks. With my father often working and visiting the site, as a child we would always come down on the weekends and help him out with bits and pieces and if we were lucky, we were able to get on the trawler in the lock and have a trip from the lock gates over to the docks. Other members of my family were past trawler skippers and my great-great grandfather was actually one of the pioneer fishermen for the port.
DB The best part is seeing how the marina has expanded and how busy we have become. From seeing the exciting installations of additional pontoons and new lock gates, to how Milford Waterfront has developed into a bustling destination, in all the years of working here it is the first time we have seen our waiting list this long.
Q
As a berth holder at Milford Marina, where is your favourite place to visit on the boat?
DB I enjoy a trip down to Dale, where I can tie up on the pontoon and have a beverage at Coco’s Brasserie at Dale Yacht Club. Having a motorboat, it is great to take a trip up the river to Haverfordwest and pop into The Bristol Trader when the tides are suitable.
“If we were lucky, we were able to get on the trawler in the lock and have a trip from the lock gates over to the docks.”

MARINA FOCUS SHAMROCK QUAY MARINA
ALL AT SEA FEBRUARY 2022
Marina Manager: Barry Radband el ail sha rockquay dl arinas.co.uk ha rock uay arina illia treet ortha outha ton
Shamrock Quay is a popular South Coast marina steeped in history. Situated on the south coast of England, deep within The Solent and Southampton Water, MDL Marinas’ Shamrock Quay Marina is ideally situated for anyone wanting to explore beautiful cruising grounds but also enjoy the benefits of being close to a thriving city centre. Shamrock Quay was originally a major ship building and refit yard owned by Camper & Nicholson. In the 1920s, Camper & Nicholson was commissioned by Sir Thomas Lipton, of Lipton tea fame, to build a series of J Class racing boats, specifically as challengers for the America’s Cup. Five of the J Class boats were eventually built,
most notably Shamrock V. The building of these iconic yachts led to the site being renamed Shamrock Quay. Shamrock V is currently undergoing a refit at MDL’s Saxon Wharf Marina, less than a quarter of a mile away from her birthplace. MDL purchased Shamrock Quay in the 1980s from owners, Dean & Dyball, who had developed the shipyard into a marina. MDL quickly set about further redeveloping the site, turning it into the modern, fully-serviced marina seen today, offering safe, secure berthing for boats up to 90m.
FACILITIES & BERTHING
Shamrock Quay has 255 berths, accommodating both power and sailing boats from 3m through to 90m. All berths are fully serviced deep water berths, with power and water outlets available. Shamrock Quay also boasts a boatyard with a storage area for up to 180 boats, and lifting facility for vessels up to 75 tonnes. This centrally located marina also offers car parking, WiFi, shower and laundry facilities, and secure storage lockers for stowing boating gear. In addition, there is a host of on-site marine and non-marine related businesses, including riggers, engineers, a sail loft, bistro/bar, designer outlet, fresh fish market, boat brokerage, chandlery, café, sea school and boat charter firm.

ACCESS
By Sea: Access to the marina is from the Solent via Southampton Water where special attention should be paid to commercial shipping operating within the main shipping channel. Shamrock Quay is accessed from the upper reaches of Southampton water. As you approach the Port of Southampton at Dock Head turn to starboard and enter the River Itchen. From here you have a 10-minute cruise up the river, passing under the impressive Itchen Bridge, which spans the river. The approach to the marina along the River Itchen is via a dredged channel which is marked with the appropriate channel markers. Due to the tidal nature of the
LOCAL EATERIES
For something delicious to eat, the marina has both the Bistro Shamrock Quay and the Yellow Welly Café on site. Just down the road at its sister marina, Ocean Village Marina, there is Banana Wharf and the multi award-winning Jetty restaurant based in the exclusive Southampton Harbour Hotel & Spa. Southampton city centre, with its multitude of shops, bars and restaurants is also only a minute walk or fi e minute taxi ride away. For everyday items and basic provisioning, there is a Tesco Express at the nearby Ocean Village Marina, but for more extensive restocking a large ASDA supermarket can be found in the town centre and there is a Sainsbury’s and M&S Food Hall at Hedge End, approximately four miles away. bananawharf.co.uk/ocean-village/about www.harbourhotels.co.uk/southampton/ eat-and-drink/the-jetty
river, all vessels are advised to always navigate between these markers. All vessels visiting the marina are asked to contact the marina on the VHF via Ch80 or the landline number 02380 229 461. By Land: Shamrock Quay is a few minutes from the main motorway network of the M3 and M27, providing easy access to Southampton and the marina. M27 Eastbound - exit Junction 3 on to the M271. Follow signs for St Mary’s Stadium and Shamrock Quay is signposted as you pass the stadium on the left. M3 Southbound - exit Junction 14 on to the A33.
THINGS TO DO
There is so much to see and do in and around Southampton, including the Sea City Museum (which tells the story of the people of the city), St Mary’s Football Stadium (home of the Saints - Southampton FC) and Solent Sky Museum (the history of iconic craft from the golden age of aviation). There is also entertainment at the May ower heatre and you can shop til you drop at West Quay Shopping Centre. Southampton, being home to the Spitfire as well as a major commercial port, was a key target for the Luftwaffe during WWII, until late 1944, with much of the older historic city around the docks area needing to be redeveloped as a result. Today the Port of Southampton is one of the country’s most successful ports, and Europe’s leading turnaround cruise port, welcoming around two million passengers each year.
Follow the signs to the Docks and Old Waterfront. M27 Westbound - exit Junction 7 on to the A334. Follow the signs to Southampton city centre. Turn left into rince’s Street at the traffic lights after the small bridge over the River Itchen. Follow the road for about half a mile and turn left into William Street where Shamrock Quay is signposted. By Rail: Arriving at Southampton Central Station, Shamrock Quay Marina is a short taxi ride away.
CRUISING
Shamrock Quay’s secluded location close to the upper reaches of the Solent offers endless cruising potential.
Destinations within easy reach from Shamrock Quay include the yachting mecca of Hamble River, which is also home to MDL’s Hamble Point, Port Hamble and Mercury Yacht Harbour marinas. The Isle of Wight is also only a couple of miles sail or motor from the marina. To the west is the picturesque Beaulieu River, the surrounding New Forest National Park, and the thriving yachting haven of Lymington. Further afield are the tur uoise waters of oole arbour and the sandy beaches of Studland Bay. To the east, a few miles away is Portsmouth arbour, home to a large eet of modern and historic warships, including Lord Nelson’s agship, MS ictory.
PERSONAL “We have moored at Shamrock Quay for the last 20 years. The marina has good road and sea access with all the facilities required to maintain a boat. The team at Shamrock are excellent and are willing to go the extra mile. This is driven by the manager Barry Radband who is passionate about the marina and providing the best customer service possible.” Maggie & Barry Pickett

Green antifoul solution The masterminds behind a sea-urchin inspired, eco-friendly antifouling solution for boats have teamed up with Falmouth Harbour and Rustler Yachts to bring the technology to Cornwall in an industry first. Finsulate’s ‘bio-wrap’ is being trialled on the hulls of Falmouth fast patrol vessel Killigrew and launch Arwenack – with potential for rolling out this prickly antifoul across the bottoms of the Harbour authority’s entire fleet. It is the latest initiative in a 150th anniversary pledge to be cleaner and greener which has made Falmouth Harbour ‘Environmental Growth’ winners in the Cornwall Sustainability Awards. Other recent initiatives include extra protection for harbour seagrass beds and a blackwater pumping facility which removes on board effluent from vessels’ holding tanks, along with a litterskimming Seabin. Bamba McDonald, Rustler commercial manager, said: “The current make up
of antifouling products as we know it will be phased out at some point and viable eco-friendly alternatives will be introduced to the market place. So, it is great to be working with Finsulate UK and Falmouth Harbour on this exciting and effective solution.” www.falmouthharbour.co.uk www.finsulate.co.uk www.rustleryachts.com

Showcasing green technology The £75m redevelopment at Noss on Dart Marina has reached several milestones in the last year and now one of the most significant green infrastructure components has been installed. Central to the new boatyard facilities is a boat wash-down water recycling system which demonstrates Premier Marinas’ commitment to investing in the latest environmentally friendly equipment and developing sustainability best practices. Designed and manufactured in the UK by FiltaBund, specialists in
New MDL berthing options From MDL Marinas comes two new berthing products which will enhance boat owners’ on water experience, opening up cruising opportunities and exploration around the UK coast and further afield. Maximising the appeal of an extensive network of beautiful marina locations, here and aboard, MDL’s Platinum Plus Otium berthing package and new Cruising Bundles offer boat owners increased flexibility to cruise between many stunning destinations, with options that can be tailored to suit their individual style of boating. The Platinum Plus Otium berthing package offers a comprehensive range of boating benefits. While enjoying Platinum berthing, boat owners receive complimentary overnight stays at MDL’s 18 UK marinas as well as access to 140 marinas in France, Spain and Portugal. Plus with Otium, MDL’s loyalty scheme which comes as standard with all berthing
packages, Platinum berth holders will receive five per cent of their berthing fee back in loyalty points. Otium berth holders can also now use their points to join the gym and spa at the Southampton Harbour Hotel or MDL Fitness at Queen Anne’s Battery Marina in Plymouth. Other benefits of Platinum berthing include eight weeks storage ashore at MDL boatyards, points on fuel and boatyard services. MDL Marinas has also introduced cruising bundles, created to support those who wish to venture further afield and make the most of their time on the water. MDL berth holders and visitors with Otium can now use their loyalty points on a selection of cruising bundles, offering overnight stays in up to 160 marinas across the UK and Europe. There are three cruising bundles to choose from. Around the marinas... Premier Marinas has announced that following a three year monitoring programme of its marinas, a final audit of its flagship Swanwick Marina, as well as a review of its overall marina group processes, they have been awarded with recertification of ISO 14001:2015 for a further three years. A public consultation on the latest plans for a new wave screen at a new marina at the Port of Dover closed on 22 January. The marina is lying empty after port officials deemed the waters too choppy to moor boats. A luxury yacht went up in flames last month at Ocean Marina in Pattaya, Thailand. No one was injured in the incident, which is under investigation although an electrical issue has been suggested as the cause. Berth holders at Milford Marina got into the Christmas spirit by taking part in the annual Christmas boat dressing competition. Iris B 2 was the latest winner, complete with fully lit Christmas tree, inflatable Santa and topped off with a star. Walcon Marine is in the final stages of a major project at Premier Marina’s Noss on Dart Marina. The project
began in the winter of 2020/21 and now an all-new, 232-berth facility is all but complete. Over the winter of 2021/22, Walcon will add the remaining pontoons and complete the supply and installation of a new bridgehead and a fuel pontoon. GCMarine is to design, supply and install a full turn-key superyacht marina for Fiji Nawi Island off the fast-developing tourist hotspot of Savusavu. The 130-berth marina, which will be constructed on the Gold Coast then transported to Fiji, has been designed to handle a Category 5 Cyclone. Two superyachts were destroyyed after a fire at Hinckley Yacht Services Marina in Rhode Island, USA. The 30m Drinkability was reportedly being repaired when the fire began, and the flames spread to the nearby 32m Danneskjold. After a comprehensive rebuild over the past two years the entire freehold of the Isle of Wight’s Totland Pier cafe, pier, moorings - is being offered for sale. wash water collection and processing equipment for the marine industry, it is a closed loop system meaning all debris and water run-off is collected, filtered through a three stage filtration system and recycled when a boat is lifted out for a high-pressure wash. This water is then stored in a holding tank ready to be recycled and used again for the next wash down. This ensures that no chemicals end up in, at Noss on Dart, the River Dart. THE CHANGING FACE OF MARINAS This month we are in the popular South Coast boating spot of Portsmouth at Gunwharf Quays Marina to discover how a focus on their guests’ experience has led to a record number of visitors.
T
he last two years have been interesting to say the least. The events beginning in March 2020 are well documented and the range of emotions experienced have varied right across the spectrum for both marina operators and their customers. Gunwharf Quays Marina, at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour, operates on a slightly different model to the traditional marina in that it has a greater reliance on visiting guests to make its money as opposed to the more familiar line of income that the larger marinas rely on from their annual contracted residents. With that in mind the words ‘close the doors and stay at home until further notice’ has a potentially greater level of anxiety around it when your job description is to attract and welcome visiting guests. During the first lockdown the marina’s focus turned to what they could do differently when they re-opened. Some of the questions they asked included: who are we going to be welcoming when we come back? How long will they be able to visit for? Will we see our international guests this summer?
Will anyone even want to visit a marina attached to a busy shopping centre and potentially crowded spaces? The short answer turned out to be yes, everyone wanted to come back, albeit slowly at first, and from all directions including from abroad. They were back in the game.
THE HUMAN TOUCH
One of the delights of running a marina on the smaller size is the ability to focus on the customer service element, and the team made a conscious decision to focus all their energy on how to make everyone feel welcome after four months of a life of the exact opposite. They looked at their two key areas of guest interaction. The first touch point being booking a berth and the second the arrival and ongoing experience throughout the visit. Gunwharf Quays Marina are firm believers in the human touch and, whilst we live in a digital world, the team knew from talking to guests that speaking to a human over the phone and being greeted by one on arrival has immense value. Although the marina features on a number of berth booking apps, the
majority of UK boat owners still prefer to call, email or click the ‘book a berth’ button on the website.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
With just two full-time staff members there were occasions on busy summer days where welcoming a guest in person became the priority over answering the phone. To improve that first point of contact they brought in additional seasonal staffing from their existing experienced retail guest services team. Answering the phone quicker improved the initial experience, giving first time guests a greater confidence in the level of service they would get on arrival. The ‘on berth’ experience of being greeted in person was already a popular feature with regular guests, but an even more impressive experience for first time guests. In fact, the most repeated sentence they hear all season is “we have never been welcomed on to a berth in any other marina before”. In order to expand this experience they extended the office opening hours into the early evening so that those arriving when the remaining berth locations were a little more tricky to
access still received that confidence boosting personal welcome. The final piece in the jigsaw was how to take care of customers arriving out of hours. Many of us use WhatsApp to message friends and family and this platform is the perfect way to send pictures and information.
rapidly growing market of superyacht clients. The pandemic and the rapidly changeable travel restrictions saw unprecedented demand for superyacht berthing in the UK for both UK owners and vessels with UK based crew, happy to freely come ashore in their home country. With the marina’s deep water
uring the rst lockdown their focus turned to what they could do di erently when they re o ened. Pre-pandemic the team would describe a berth over the phone and ask people to write down gate codes, which all required work from them, and then work by the guest to note it all down. Now they use WhatsApp to communicate, with images of the marina, berth location and any other information a guest may need to enjoy their stay when the team are not around to welcome them.
MORE ‘SUPER’ GUESTS It is not just their leisure customers who received this human touch and Here is a Seabin installed on River Soar warm welcoming service, but also the
location and three superyacht capable berths of 50m+ in length, Gunwharf Quays Marina was in the perfect position to accommodate this unprecedented demand. The same welcoming ethos was applied to captains, agents and crew and saw them secure a record 11 superyachts in 2021 and repeat bookings for 2022. So that was the changing face of Gunwharf Quays in 2020-21. Record numbers of guests thanks to a human touch and a warm welcome to every one of their guests. #everyoneswelcome at www.gunwharf-quays.com

THE CHANGING FACE OF MARINAS Gone are the days when you needed to buy a boat outright to get out on the water. Dealerships and brokerage businesses are recognising that with the growing number of options available to sailors and motorboaters, they can no longer exist if they are just about the ‘buy and sell’.
The Ancasta Yacht Services Team
A
ppreciating the changing nature of how people enjoy their leisure time and the impact this has on marine businesses, Ancasta International Boat Sales, part of the Ancasta Group, has successfully adapted its approach. “The first question someone is now asked when they walk through the door of one of our offices is ‘how do you want to get out on the water?,” says Nick Griffith, Ancasta Group managing director. “We can offer a wide selection of innovative solutions ranging from the traditional ownership route to shared or financed ownership and investment programs. Charter will also be an option in the near future too. The reality is that for anyone wanting to get afloat we have a solution for them, whatever stage they are at in their boating journey.” But Ancasta’s approach goes much further than just the initial step of new boat purchase or brokerage sale, which ever acquisition option has been chosen. At the beginning of 2021, the Ancasta Group’s commissioning and aftersales team and well-known Hamble Yacht Services Refit and Repair merged to create Ancasta Yacht Services, an allencompassing yacht repair, service and support business. Expanding upon Ancasta’s aftersales, commissioning and spare parts services, the merging of HYSRR’s skilled refit and repair workforce with Ancasta’s operations team makes it easier for owners to manage and care for their boats.
Ancasta has the ability to seamlessly support new and existing customers throughout the lifecycle of their boat ownership. Not only can a boat be purchased and sold under the Ancasta brand, but it can now also be maintained, repaired and upgraded via Ancasta Yacht Services.
STREAMLINED SERVICE This holistic approach to boating is designed to offer a streamlined boat service and alleviate boat owners from time-consuming logistics and maintenance worries, allowing them to maximise their time on the water.
“We have always provided worldwide support for our yacht owners, but Ancasta Yacht Services enhances this,” continues Nick. “Building upon HYSRR’s 45 years of dedicated yacht maintenance experience the team at Ancasta Yacht Services offer the very best in yacht servicing and support. “Being able to provide an in-house service capability with Ancasta Yacht Services gives enormous comfort to our existing and future customers, as they are secure in the knowledge that their boat is in safe and trusted hands. “Through one established point of contact, our boat owners have access

to a wide range of skills and services, so they do not have to coordinate a multitude of different tradespeople and suppliers – everything is project managed for them, no matter how small or large the job.” Operating from MDL’s Port Hamble Marina, Ancasta Yacht Services’ extensive facilities include under cover workshops accommodating yachts up to 26m, a fully equipped engineering workshop, wood shop, laminating shop as well as a large joinery shop. On-site boatyard facilities provide two travels hoists lifting up to 80 tonnes in weight and 33.5m in length, dry boat storage, a large mast crane, expert riggers and marina berthing on-site.

Closing the loop and ensuring that its customers maximise their on-water leisure time, Ancasta runs a Motorboat Owners Club and a Yacht Club. Whether a novice boater or lifelong sailor, Ancasta’s owners’ clubs aim to provide boat owners with fun trips, rallies and social events, locally and further afield, offering them an avenue to make the most of their boats and enjoy the boating lifestyle. “Buying a boat with Ancasta is so much more than the initial transaction; it is the start of a loyal and supportive, long-lasting relationship. We want to make boat ownership as stress-free and as enjoyable as possible for as long as someone owns their boat - it really is a lifetime of support,” concludes Nick. ancasta.com/yacht-services

Alcohol and chocolate make wonderful partners… any time of the year.
C
hocolate liqueurs are often linked to Christmas but, hey, February has Valentine’s Day when something special is called for. Premium spirits or liqueurs like Cointreau and Amaretto cased in luxurious chocolate and beautifully presented are just as romantic a Valentine’s gift as champagne and roses. Or, as an after dinner treat, they give you the flavour of your favourite drink without the worry about driving home. Because, yes, the most frequently asked
question about liqueur chocolates is can you get drunk on them? The spirits inserted into the chocolate shells is generally full strength (over 35 5 they 6 could1 per cent3abv) so in theory make you tipsy. combination when, in 1924, the company began making brandy-filled pralines and soon after launched miniature bottles made of the finest bitter-sweet dark chocolate filled with their brandy. A key feature is a fine sugar-crystal crust on the inside of the chocolate which keeps the spirit separated from the chocolate, so that when you bite into the shell you get a direct burst of the neat brandy and the chocolate taste follows a few seconds after. Other makers offering a range of spirits in chocolate followed and socalled chocolate liqueurs became a big mainstay at Christmas. You might not find so many in supermarkets in February, so online looks like the best way to go. Chocolate beers
While spirits may be the first response to a chocolate partnership, there are enough chocolate beer enthusiasts, especially in wintertime, to support a dozen or so UK examples. This is a typical boutique brewery seasonal product line so it is quite a surprise to find Young’s leading the sector with their Double Chocolate Stout. Brewed with real chocolate in the mash, it is 5.2 per cent, which is quite modest for a winter beer. A pack of eight costs £14 from ringwoodbrewery.co.uk. Both Tesco and Sainsbury’s offer Brewdog Layer Cake Marshmallow and Chocolate Stout, seven per cent, £3 for a 440ml can. M&S has Cheshire Chocolate Porter, brewed by the Unicorn Brewery, Stockport, claimed to be based on an 1899 recipe by chocolatier Simon Dunn. 7£2.50 for 500ml at six 4 per cent. At the other end of the 1 8 winter 2 7abv scale is Northern Monk Death Star Stout 9 at 12 per cent, brewed in Leeds, which 3blends bitter 7 chocolate, peanut and caramel8with roasted barley 9 1 and oats to bring out the stout flavour. £5 for a 5 440ml can at Tesco. 6 As a typical seasonal beer there 5
