GET RACE DAY READY The Island Sailing Club will be working with Cowes Yacht Haven to stage a Round the Island Race Village, which will be open from midday on 24 June and throughout the race weekend. Daniel Jehan, managing director of the Cowes Yacht Haven, said: “We look forward to entertaining competitors, supporters and spectators with our popup food hall, bar area and terrace.” The Round the Island Race welcomes sailors from all over the world, from professional sailors to keen amateur crews, families and first-time racers, competing on the 58-mile course around the Isle of Wight coastline. More than 100 trophies are up for grabs and most boats have the chance to win several prizes. The most famous is the Gold Roman Bowl, which has been awarded to the overall winner of the race (now the IRC division) since the first race in 1931, but there are many other trophies with fascinating histories that are given away each year. This year, eight yachts will also be awarded a Swiss made General Purpose Marathon Watch. The race is set to be a spectacular sight come 25 June, with race entries rapidly building.

Race director, David Atkinson said: “For the first time since the pandemic started we are delighted to be able to offer a terrific onshore hospitality programme at both the Race Village and the Island Sailing Club. It is also fantastic to see entries returning from abroad this year, plus we have also got the highest percentage of first-time participants (to date) that we have ever experienced. I think there are a lot of new owners keen to challenge their boats and crew with our incredible race.” The Race Team are focused on providing support to competitors preparing for the race. B&G is inviting competitors to get ‘Race Day Ready’ with their blog series helping crews get the most out of their electronics on race day. In June, B&G will be launching live webinar sessions, one aimed at beginners and one that is more technical. There is also a handy ‘First Timers’ Guide’ online with everything competitors need to know – from how to enter and how to prepare, to where to berth and what to look out for. www.roundtheisland.org.uk Turn to page 18 for this month’s Shootin’ The Breeze with The Island Sailing Club’s Will Overton.

A PRINCELY SUM A classic Albatross motorboat, formerly owned and driven by HRH the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh for more than 30 years, achieved a princely sum in the Bonhams Goodwood Members Meeting Sale, selling for £69,000, doubling its presale estimate and setting a new auction world record for an Albatross. The Duke’s 1956 Albatross MkIII Super Sports Runabout was carried on the Royal Yacht Britannia for more than a decade, including on the World Cruise of 1956/1957, and was famously photographed at Cowes driven by Prince Philip with the eightyear-old Prince Charles as his passenger. That image featured on the thank you card issued by the Prince of Wales in response to the messages of sympathy received following his father’s death last year. The three-seater craft, one of only 607 produced, was powered by a Ford 100E

BUY YOUR TICKETS! Tickets are on sale for the SailGP which returns to Plymouth for the Great Britain Sail Grand Prix over 30 - 31 July. In the third event in the SailGP’s championship calendar, following Bermuda and Chicago, 10 nations will race in an area famed for its rich maritime history in identical fast foiling F50 catamarans reaching speeds exceeding 60mph. Last year the event drew an estimated 27,500 spectators and brought in a $9.5 million boost to the local economy. Absent from SailGP’s Plymouth debut in Season 2, this year Ben Ainslie will be back in the driving seat and will be looking to give home fans something to cheer about. “Last year’s event was fantastic, delivering on all fronts with close racing, perfect weather, big spectator numbers and even a whale! From a personal point of view, this will be the first time I have competed on home waters for nearly six years and there is nothing quite like it, we cannot wait,” said Sir Ben.

In addition to the action-filled race days, SailGP’s Inspire program aims to give area residents and its youth an exciting agenda to use the power of sport for good while developing sailing as a sustainable sport. In 2021, SailGP partnered with Plymouth based Ocean Conservation Trust to connect sport and conservation with a programme of free engagement and educational opportunities, a mammal protection plan for the racing weekend and the restoration of seagrass meadows in Plymouth Sound National Marine Park. For 2022 – alongside continuing this conservation and development work aligned to the National Marine Park – the city will also sign the league’s Climate Action Charter, committing to local impact projects that focus on clean energy impact and wider ocean conservation. It was Prince Philip’s second such craft, which was favoured by a distinguished clientele worldwide including Aristotle Onassis, Brigitte Bardot and Prince Rainier of Monaco. In 1967 the boat was moved to the Balmoral Estate where it was later reputedly driven by the late Diana, Princess of Wales. SUNSEEKER 100 YACHT The highly anticipated 100 Yacht launched into Poole Harbour, seeing daylight for the very first time. Preparing for her maiden sea trial, the 100 Yacht was at the home of Sunseeker before her delivery into the Mediterranean this summer. Andrea Frabetti, CEO at Sunseeker International, said: “We are incredibly proud to unveil the 100 Yacht here in

Poole with the owner in attendance to see, for the first time, this spectacular new model. Our project team has worked incredibly hard to present the first build and prepare the vessel for initial sea trials and testing. The second hull is following in close succession and our teams are now busy building multiple 100 Yacht orders for delivery in 2022 and beyond: it has been a remarkable success.”

There is something very special about spending time on the water, whether it is with friends, family or getting away from it all on your own – something we all crave from time to time. In this issue, we have all bases covered, from a reader heading off on a French adventure to preparing for the upcoming Round the Island Race with friends and family. Before that, though, in the news pages we have been looking at what happens to seized Russian superyachts and who has responsibility for them. A potentially costly issue, at the moment the UK has only seized one, a £38m superyacht called Phi, but this could of course change. Perhaps we could be making use of this superyacht? It seems a shame to let such a beautiful craft sit unused, but then I suppose often they are rarely frequented by their super-rich owners anyway. It would be fitting to see Phi used as a temporary home for Ukrainian refugees. Interestingly, some companies are already thinking outside the box when it comes to housing those forced to leave Ukraine. In Rotterdam, a cruise ship is providing a temporary home for around 1,500 Ukrainians. Frustrating for holidaymakers who have had their holidays moved, but it is nothing compared to what the refugees have been through. A UK holiday that is coming up is the extended Bank Holiday for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, which begins on Thursday 2 June. This is followed, on 11 June, by Her Majesty’s official birthday (her actual birthday was last month on 21 April). There will be events happening all around the country to celebrate the Jubilee and no doubt sailing clubs and marinas will be getting involved, so get your bunting and flags ready! As the celebrations continue, just announced is another Jubilee event at Cowes on 6 August, which it is hoped will bring together hundreds of boats. As you will see in our Summer Events Special on page 22, it looks set to be an incredible summer of boating, with no shortage of things to see and do. Tickets are available for the hugely exciting SailGP, which is coming to Plymouth in July. This is a fantastic opportunity to see Sir Ben Ainslie and the British team in action, and hopefully take the win! Before the SailGP, though, is the much-loved

Round the Island Race next month. On page 18 we catch up with Will Overton, a regular competitor and a director of the Island Sailing Club. We will bring you All at Sea’s race preview next month. I was very lucky to have spent the Easter weekend on the Isle of Wight. It has been a while since I have been there, and I had forgotten just how friendly everyone is and what a relaxed and chilled place it is. A shout out to Doris the gorgeous, and apparently well-known, dog we met in Cowes! Despite being so close to the mainland (you could see the Spinnaker Tower from our lodge), you feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Obviously race day, and then Cowes Week, will not be quite that relaxed, but they will undoubtedly be huge fun. For those of you racing, this month’s Hot Topic could be of interest: Seldén Mast’s Michael Calvert is talking mast buying. A sneak peek for next month – we are teaming up with Seldén Mast for a fantastic, not to be missed, competition. On 8 April the Jubilee Sailing Trust announced that the charity would be forced into administration unless a significant sum could be raised. In a statement the Trust said: “We have battled hard through the last two years but, as a small charity providing life-changing tall ship experiences for disabled and disadvantaged people, the harsh and negative impact of Covid and the cost-of-living crisis has seen an increase in costs and a decrease in income which has now reached a critical point. £500K will need to be raised by 14 April with a total of £1.2 million by the end of September 2022 to keep the charity afloat.” A total of £346,000 was successfully raised by 14 April, and the trustees agreed to keep fundraising until the end of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend by which time just over £423,000 had been raised. Donations have since exceeded £443K. GREEN SHOW POWERS UP

The Green Tech Boat Show is the only dedicated UK showcase of the latest environmentally-friendly marine technologies. ePropulsion UK is teaming up with Plymouth-based dealer, Blue Electric for the show, which takes place from 16 – 18 June at Queen Anne’s Battery in Plymouth. As well as discovering the full ePropulsion range of electric outboards and POD drives for yachts, it is an opportunity to hear from yachtsman Conrad Humphreys about making the switch to green power. Conrad’s credentials as a multiple Round the World yacht race skipper,

inspirational speaker and leadership coach led him to set up his Sport Environment business to help brands and sports events become better custodians of the planet. In addition, after being a professional skipper on board The Bounty in Channel 4’s recreation of Captain Bligh’s epic voyage, he founded Blue Electric. Conrad will be doing a livestream from The Bounty and talking at the event’s Innovation Hub. The ePropulsion team will be available throughout the show to discuss converting to electric propulsion or specifying requirements for a new build. www.mdlmarinas.co.uk/events Read more about the show on page 37.

CELEBRATING IN THE SOLENT The Solent’s boating community is invited to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee at Cowes on 6 August. A committee of sailing organisations, class associations and clubs from across the Solent region is organising the sailing and entertainment planned on the Solent and at Cowes Yacht Haven, following Cowes Week. Yacht and sailing clubs in the Solent region are being asked to send up to 20 representative vessels to participate in the event. All boats, from RIBs to sailing and motor vessels, can register to be part of the official programme. The day will begin with the option of breakfast, followed by a review of all

participating vessels by VIPs from across the region, with racing off Bramble Bank. A Silver Spitfire Air Display and prizegiving will be followed by an afternoon of live music and entertainment at a free concert at Cowes Yacht Haven. Chair of the organising committee, Jonathan Nainby-Luxmoore said: “The day will bring the boating community together like never before, with potential for 600 vessels or more to attend from clubs around the Solent region.” Yachtsman Geoff Holt MBE, founder of the Wetwheels charity and a member of the organising committee, said: “Members of the Royal family have been a common sight at yachting events in the Solent for many years

and have supported many local yacht clubs and charities. The event is a great opportunity to bring the Solent’s sailing and yachting community together to celebrate our Queen’s 70 years on the throne and the Royal family’s ongoing support for yachting and boating.” The event will also help raise money to provide opportunities for disabled people to get afloat by supporting Wetwheels as the nominated charity. Wetwheels boats from around the UK will return to the Solent, enabling VIPs from across the region to view the spectacle from the water. Register your interest at mail@rys.org.uk. HELPING FIRST-TIMERS With the debut of the new Club Cruiser Class at Cowes Week last year, the Cruising Association and Cowes Week organisers have teamed up to produce a ‘first-timer’ video. Although focused on first-timers, it will prove equally helpful for owners and skippers who regularly race but may be introducing new crew to Cowes Week or crew who will be sailing for the first time. The video discusses everything from insurance to the starting line. “A first-time at anything can be daunting,” said Lucy Gray, CA general manager.“We consulted with our members and lined up a pile of questions that are likely to crop up for new competitors. The video is intended as a ‘walk through’ of what to expect and we really appreciate the partnership with Cowes Week.” The Cruising Association is partnering with Cowes Week for the second year as presenting trophy sponsor for the Club Cruiser Class. In 2021, the Class featured a broad line-up of cruising yachts,

including Bavaria, Beneteau, Carter, Dehler, Dufour, Sigma, Westerly and Folkboat, and so far entries this year include a Rustler 33, Finngulf 33, First 285 and Super Seal 26. The event format is one race per day, with several starts off the iconic Royal Yacht Squadron line. Taking place from 30 July - 5 August, Cowes Week sees racing on the world-renowned Solent courses along with an après sail programme that makes sure the fun continues long after the finish. Enter at www.cowesweek.co.uk with the option to enter the whole regatta or specific days. The Early Bird fee applies for entries paid by 27 May, the Standard Entry Fee until 22 July, after which the ‘Late Entry’ fee applies. Watch the video at the online All at Sea news pages (www.allatsea.co.uk) or at youtu.be/ YPG5zIC56rs. Catch up with more news from the Cruising Association on page 32.

Unchartered territory for seized superyachts Seized maritime assets could pose a “significant risk” to ports, harbours and marinas if there is no requirement to ensure mega yachts detained under sanction rules are properly maintained, made safe or deactivated. Safety concerns raised by Van Ameyde McAuslands, a global firm of marine surveyors and engineering consultants, follow the seizure by port authorities across Europe of a number of high-profile mega yachts thought to be owned by Russian oligarchs. As reported last month, in Canary Wharf authorities seized the $38M Phi. The $75M Axiom was seized in Gibraltar, and in Italy authorities boarded the $540M Sailing Yacht A, one of the world’s largest privately owned yachts. In total, yachts thought to be worth more than $16 billion have been held across Europe. “When a vessel is seized it may no longer be in Class and under Flag, and any insurance, including P&I and H&M, is likely to have already been revoked,” said Albert Weatherill, managing director, Van Ameyde McAuslands, UK. “From that moment the yacht, by default, becomes a liability of the state. And without insurance, proper loss prevention measures need to be in place to avoid losses and claims. Potential litigation could run into millions of dollars if assets are not properly made

safe or shut down correctly. These are not vessels that can be simply turned off and walked away from.” Normally, the annual upkeep of a mega yacht can exceed $50 million, with flag state requirements calling for minimum manning and planned maintenance. But according to the surveying firm, there is confusion over who will be responsible for carrying out routine maintenance if any is being carried out at all. “If crews are not being paid and walk away or if sanctions prohibit maintenance, what happens if there is a pollution incident? What happens if the vessel comes adrift or catches fire, if there is theft or the vessel is sabotaged? There are too many unknowns, and in this industry, unknowns often equate to litigation,” Albert continued. Van Ameyde McAuslands believes that seizing authorities – flag states – should be aware of the need to take immediate action when a vessel is impounded. “These vessels need to be as safe as possible on the mooring,” said Arthur. While it is difficult to predict how long these vessels are going to remain alongside, to make them safe machinery should be deactivated, systems drained down, discharge overboard valves closed, fire systems checked and engines prepared for cold lay-up in accordance

The Ever Forward was refloated last month after a 35-day salvage operation that began after the 1,095ft container ship grounded in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. Following two unsuccessful refloat attempts, salvage experts determined that with the 4,964 containers aboard it would not be possible. So, 500 containers were removed and dredging carried out before the ship was refloated using tugs and pulling barges. The Ever Forward was towed to the Annapolis Anchorage Grounds for inspection, before its removed containers could be reloaded and the ship allowed to continue its voyage to Norfolk, Virginia.

with Classification Society and OEM guidelines. “This will prevent any potential damage to machinery, internal cabins, valuables, limiting financial exposure and liability. It will also safeguard against any potential risk to the maritime infrastructure, the environment and the public at large,” concluded Arthur. “Manning, deterioration, damage, fire, theft, danger to people and property – these are all very serious issues. When vessels are dormant for long periods there is potential for things to go wrong and when there is no insurance safety

net to fall back on, it is a big problem. We are in unchartered territory.”

Holland America Line’s Volendam is being used to accommodate Ukrainian refugees as part of an agreement announced by Netherlands and City

of Rotterdam government officials. The ship is docking in Rotterdam for three months to provide a temporary home for around 1,500 Ukrainians, as

part of a larger commitment from the Netherlands to accommodate 50,000 people who have fled the war in their homeland. “We are in a unique position to accommodate the immediate need for food and housing, so we felt it was very important to work with the City of Rotterdam and charter this ship,” said Gus Antorcha, president, Holland America Line. “Our company was founded in Rotterdam around the mission of helping immigrants find a better life. So we are proud to be a small part of a similar mission for Ukrainians who have tragically been displaced.” Volendam was scheduled to return to service on 15 May, with voyages from Rotterdam to Norway, the British Isles and Iceland. Holland America Line has cancelled three voyages and

will resume service on 3 July instead. Guests on cancelled cruises are being accommodated on similar itineraries. “We are very sorry for the inconvenience this will cause to guests booked on cancelled cruises,” Gus Antorcha said. “We hope they understand the unprecedented nature of this situation and why we felt it was important to work with the government on this initiative in support of these families in need.” Holland America Group has already been working with its team members who are Ukrainian and a $1 million emergency assistance fund provides direct financial support. The family foundation of parent company Carnival Corporation’s chairman Micky Arison and his wife Madeleine also announced a pledge of $3 million to charities helping Ukrainian refugees.

Back in 2012 we were, not surprisingly, getting behind our Olympians as they prepared for the London Games. Were you at Southampton for the final in 2012?

Heesen’s Russian owner sanctioned Heesen Yachts is a Dutch ship building company specialising in custom built superyachts like that pictured here. Image: Sergey Sivkov/Shutterstock

Last month Heesen Yachts learned that one of its Ultimate Beneficial Owners had been listed on the UK’s sanctions list in relation to Russia. Vagit Alekporov is not only the president of Russia’s oil giant Lukoil, but is also the owner of Heesen Yachts. However, because Vagit Alekporov was added to the UK sanctions list and not the European Union’s and Heesen is a Dutch-registered company the business will not be affected. Heesen issued this statement: “Heesen is a Dutch company qualifying as a large (so-called) structure-company, which means that we are managed by a professional Management Board, with an independent Supervisory Board which appoints the Management Board members. Heesen only reports directly to its sole shareholder, Morcell Ltd. Heesen’s UBO does not actively or directly manage our business in any capacity. We are financially independent and in good shape, with a strong order book, and currently employ around 1,000 individuals in the Netherlands.

“Earlier in March this year, following the developments of the war against Ukraine, Heesen’s current UBO publicly called for an end to the conflict, while Heesen Yachts’ supervisory board members Pavel Novoselov and Pavel Sukhoruchkin stepped down from their positions to further emphasise the shipyard’s independence and Dutch nature. "Heesen’s management and employees are saddened by the ongoing situation in Ukraine and our thoughts are with its citizens and all those affected. We condemn violence in every form and hope for a fast resolution of the war. “Heesen has always worked closely with the authorities adhering to all relevant laws and regulations, and we are cooperating in full transparency with government agencies. Our international clientele consists of customers of American, European, Middle Eastern and Asian origin. Our craftsmen are constantly working to deliver the high-quality technological yachts for which our country is renowned and will continue to do so.”

WORLD SAILING REVIEWS SUSPENSION MEASURES Following World Sailing’s decision in March to suspend the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials in World Sailing owned and sanctioned competitions and events until further notice, the World Sailing Board met again in April to consider extending these measures. In a statement the World Sailing Board: • agreed to set in motion the processes and approvals from its stakeholders to enable in extraordinary circumstances

the temporary suspension of the participation of members of committees, commissions, working parties, the Council and any other relevant body of World Sailing. • intends to clarify that its position in relation to the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus also excludes the participation of any boat owned or effectively controlled or managed by a Russian or Belarusian individual or entity. The World Sailing Legal Team is working through the necessary

next steps, to include: • Reviewing World Sailing’s constitution and all applicable Regulations to ensure due process is followed; and • Preparing regulatory and constitutional changes for approval by Council and Member National Authorities (respectively). The World Sailing Board is aiming to conclude this matter in advance of the mid-year meeting due to take place in Abu Dhabi on 26 – 29 May.

PRINCESS AT SEA Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal was able to enjoy time with sea cadets during her first voyage as Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps. Cadets from 12 units around the country piped her arrival on board TS Royalist, the youth charity’s flagship and she promptly set sail for the Solent. The Princess Royal was joined by Martin Coles CBE, chief executive, and Captain Neil Downing RN, Captain Sea Cadets. “We were delighted to welcome The Princess Royal for her first voyage with Sea Cadets since becoming our Admiral,” said Neil Downing. “Cadets getting together for a voyage is a key aspect of the Sea Cadets experience, encouraging young people from many different backgrounds to get to know each other and work together as a team.” The Princess Royal has a long history

of actively supporting the youth charity and has special links with the TS Royalist, having named and commissioned the original TS Royalist in 1971 as well as the replacement ship of the same name in 2015. At the beginning of April, The Princess Royal officially opened the new Sea Cadets boat station in Port Edgar, Edinburgh, where she praised the charity for the opportunities it offers young people, telling the cadets: “Sea Cadets has quite a history – a history that you keep adding to.” The TS Royalist sleeps 24 cadets and allows young people all around the country to experience voyages of up to six days. Offshore voyages give sea cadets a great opportunity to enjoy nautical adventures, while developing the skills and confidence to launch them into life.

BLUE SPACE BENEFITS Sea Sanctuary, a mental health charity in Cornwall, welcomes loneliness as the theme of Mental Health Awareness Week, 9 - 15 May, as they believe more people than ever are feeling isolated in the aftermath of the pandemic. With social lives put on hold due to multiple lockdowns, periods of isolation and working from home, the impact on mental health has been devastating. Sea Sanctuary is concerned about the number of people who are desperately struggling in the shadows of isolation, as life returns to normal. However, they believe spending time around blue spaces with other people could be the key to finding calm and happiness again. Sea Sanctuary founder and CEO, Joseph Sabien, said: “We know that loneliness is a precursor for poor mental health, so welcome this modern-day

crisis being put in the spotlight during Mental Health Awareness Week. Everything we do is about bringing people together, forging new networks and opening conversations, something that was lost during the pandemic and has had catastrophic consequences across society. “Our sailing and therapeutic programs on our tall ship Irene give people the space to authentically connect with each other, as well as with the water around them. "As they work the sails and focus on the job at hand, they naturally start to build trust with each other, and this can lead to finally having conversations they have been too scared to start in the past. By helping our clients to build connections, we give them a voice which, in turn, alleviates loneliness and saves lives.” seasanctuary.org.uk / www.mentalhealth.org.uk

BRITS BRINGING HOME MEDALS Britain’s elite sailors laid down a marker as the 2022 season got underway at Palma’s iconic Trofeo Princesa Sofia, bringing home medals in six of the 10 classes. The British Sailing Team's medal haul included two golds, a silver and three bronze as the six-day regatta came to a successful conclusion. Michael Beckett (top) took gold in the ILCA 7 (formerly Laser) class, his first medal at any World Cup event, while Andy Brown (bottom) scored his first senior win of his career in the iQFOiL windsurfing class. Hannah Snellgrove took silver in in the ILCA 6 (formerly Laser Radial), and there were bronzes for Ellie Aldridge and Connor Bainbridge in the Formula Kite classes, and John Gimson and Anna Burnet in the Nacra 17. Andy Brown, from Glasgow, revelled in Palma’s blustery conditions and proved his skill in the Olympics’ new foiling windsurfing class with eight race wins in 18 races, only once placing outside of the top 10. “I am feeling amazing,” Andy said. “It is the first time I have won any senior medal in an Olympic class, and I am absolutely buzzing. I have been competing at this event for six years now and it feels great to win.” Like her ILCA counterpart, Hannah Snellgrove started her medal race guaranteed of silverware – although a 25-point gap to Canada’s Sarah Douglas made gold unattainable. Hannah’s battle for second was with Greece’s Vasileia Karachaliou, who started the medal race just a point behind. “I feel really happy and relieved,”

said Hannah, from Lymington. “It was a really stressful medal race, and I went into it knowing I could win either silver or bronze, so it was a case of ‘who beat’ who between Vasileia and me. I am super happy to come away with the silver. It is my best result at this regatta and it is a massive confidence boost for the season ahead.” Ellie Aldridge, from Poole, and Weymouth’s Connor Bainbridge are no strangers to the Formula Kite podium, and both continued their stellar run of form with a brace of bronzes. The British team finished second in the medal table behind the French.

RACE WIN FOR WTC LOGISTICS After more than a month at sea for the Clipper Race teams and an exceptionally close finish, WTC Logistics won Race 10: Sailing City - Qingdao Cup. The team, led by Skipper Dan Jones and First Mate Ineke van der Weijden, clinched victory in the 6,100nm race from the Philippines to Seattle, where they battled tough conditions for over 34 days. WTC Logistics had been in the leading pack from the start, often jostling for the top spot with Unicef, GoToBermuda and Punta del Este. After crossing the Scoring Gate in third, the team pushed ahead and performed exceptionally well in the range of conditions that the North Pacific served up.

Unicef crossed the finish line just 2 hours and 53 minutes after WTC Logistics to take a well-deserved second position. After playing its joker, the team doubled its race points. In the lead up to the finish, Punta del Este, having suffered in a wind hole, dropped from the podium but remained hot on the heels of GoToBermuda. Unfortunately, GoToBermuda could not lay the line with the wind angle, meaning they were forced to tack, whilst Punta del Este pushed ahead to reclaim its podium place in the final miles to the finish. On 30 April the fleet set off on the US Coast-to-Coast Leg of the race.

CANAL BOAT TASTER On 2 June, the first day of the Bank Holiday weekend celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, canal boat holiday operator Anglo Welsh is hosting open days at five of its narrowboat hire bases, offering people the chance to try canal boating for free. The events offer visitors the chance to take a free trip on a skippered day boat and to find out more about canal boat holidays. Emma Lovell, bookings manager for Anglo Welsh, said: “No booking is required and trips will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. IAN WALKER STEPS DOWN FROM RYA Image: RYA

Ian Walker MBE is stepping down from his position as RYA Racing Director. Ian joined the RYA four-and-a-half years ago and, in his dual role as Performance Director, he oversaw the British Sailing Team’s success in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. Ian has also been instrumental in the strategic planning for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic cycle. During the pandemic, Ian was central to the development of the RYA’s Covid-19 response and enabling people back on the water as soon as possible. Well-known for his emphasis on high performance, Ian has also been passionate about youth and junior sailing and has prioritised the support of clubs and volunteers. Commenting on his time at the RYA, Ian said: “I am very grateful to the RYA for believing and trusting in me when I was fresh out of professional sailing. I have learnt so much over the last four years and much of

that I have learnt from the incredibly dedicated staff and volunteers I have worked with. “I think now is a good time for me to leave as we are in a short lull between Olympic cycles and the RYA will soon be starting the process of creating their new strategy for the next generation. We have a very capable and enthusiastic senior management team, and under Sara Sutcliffe’s leadership the future looks very promising for the RYA. It is a good time for me to take on a new challenge and give a chance for others to take on new responsibilities.” RYA CEO, Sara Sutcliffe, said: “I am of course sorry to see Ian leave the RYA and wish him the very best as he embarks on new challenges. The leadership he has brought to the British Sailing Team and the Racing Department will leave a lasting legacy. He will be missed by all his colleagues at the RYA.” Ian will continue in his role as RYA Racing Director until mid-July.

NOT SO BIG CONTAINER SHIP Royal Museums Greenwich has acquired a 1:150 scale model of the container ship HMM Algeciras, which is now on display in the Voyagers Gallery at the National Maritime Museum. Container ships have revolutionised the world since the 1950s, facilitating fast and cost-efficient global trade. When it launched in April 2020, HMM Algeciras was the largest container ship in the world, with a capacity to carry 23,964 20ft shipping containers – the equivalent of 1,150,272,000 bananas or 17 bananas per person in the UK. At a shade under 400m the HMM Algeciras is

longer than The Shard is tall. The ship model measures 1620 x 2960 x 760mm and was donated to the museum by the operators of the HMM Algeciras class of container ships, HMM Co Ltd, a South Korean container transportation and shipping company. It is the latest addition to the world’s largest collection of ship models. The National Maritime Museum holds approximately 4,600 ship models, with a broad range of vessels dating from 1800BC to the present day represented. www.rmg.co.uk

Painting the Future A pioneering initiative designed to collectively accelerate carbon reduction in the paints and coatings industry has been launched by AkzoNobel. The company has invited partners from across the value chain to take part in its Collaborative Sustainability Challenge – a new Paint the Future initiative which aims to develop a shared approach to tackling climate change. “Successfully tackling the impact of climate change is everyone’s responsibility,” says AkzoNobel CEO, Thierry Vanlancker. “Having set science-based sustainability targets to halve our carbon emissions across the full value chain by 2030, we are fully committed to getting there. However, we know the only way for us to achieve that ambition – and play our part in limiting global warming to 1.5˚C above pre-industrial levels – is to collaborate with our partners.”

AkzoNobel’s Collaborative Sustainability Challenge is scheduled to take place in Amsterdam from 17 - 18 May. letspaintthefuture.com

It has been reported in the Southern Daily Echo that Associated British Ports is “pricing people out of the water”. While private owners have seen mooring licenses increase, sailing clubs are also seeing over inflation increases. Bob Gardner, honorary secretary with Southampton Water Sailing Association, told the Southern Daily Echo: “Everybody’s trepidatious that, having seen individual mooring holders’ costs increase by a factor of three, there is a similar plan for the clubs. It is just pricing people out of the water without consultation. It feels completely against government policy on encouraging participation in sport and getting people active.” In a statement ABP said: “We kept mooring fees as low as possible for as long as we could, but to mitigate increased operational and infrastructure costs, and after a number of years with little change in fees, we are unable to delay the rise in fees any longer. “We delayed January’s fee increase by three months, giving mooring holders time to decide if

WHERE DO YOU MOOR YOURS? Do you know where this is? Turn to page 16 to see if you got it right!

they wanted to continue with their mooring. We also introduced a quarterly payment plan to spread payments, and rates remain very competitive with other local providers. “There has been significant investment by ABP in infrastructure, equipment and the removal of vessels using moorings illegally. To ensure safe waterways and legal ownership of vessels, we have increased patrolling, and will undertake a substantial programme to remove complex wrecks from the river Itchen, ensuring enjoyable waterways for all.”

RYA Youth National Championships

The RYA Youth National Championships returned to Pwllheli, North Wales over the Easter break as the 2022 champions were crowned across seven youth fleets. Last hosting the premier youth sailing regatta in 2016, Plas Heli welcomed 280 youngsters from all over the country for five days of racing. With the 2021 Youth Nationals spread across two weekends and two venues, the 2022 edition saw all the youth fleets together in one place as the kitefoilers joined the iQFOiL, 420, Nacra 15, 29er and ILCA6 in competition. Despite contending with unstable wind and weather conditions throughout the week, everyone but the kite and board fleets came very close to

completing their full schedules in tough race conditions that varied from sunny to foggy. Although enduring a tougher week onshore, the iQFOiL and kite sailors still completed enough races to confirm their national champions. Mark Nicholls, the RYA’s youth racing manager, said: “Year after year at the Youth Nationals I am amazed by the strength and resilience of our nation's young sailors. They have had a tough few years, as has everyone, and the start of the regatta was no different. But, yet again, they dealt with everything thrown at them with fortitude.” The Youth National Championships is the flagship event of British Youth Sailing.

With St. Katharine Docks providing the perfect backdrop for the show, with its many boutique bars and restaurants, visitors and guests were privy to an impressive line-up of luxury craft from leading brands including Sunseeker, Oyster, Fairline, Hallberg-Rassy, Pearl Yachts and Azimut, plus Float8’s ecoconscious luxurious floating home. Shoreside, to complement the yachts, were displays featuring

X Shore, the Swedish technology company behind a range of fully electric boats, has raised more than $50 million of new capital in its latest funding round, which was oversubscribed in just a day. The new financing will be used to ramp up production at its new factory, named X Shore Industries 1, in Sweden, which has recently become operational, rolling its first boat off the production line at the end of March following pilot production starting last autumn.

With the latest injection of funding, X Shore will now be able to manufacture two boats per day by year-end. The additional capital will also be used to support increased research and development efforts. The funding round comes after a successful year of growth and expansion for X Shore, having officially launched its Eelex 8000 electric boat in the United States last year. www.xshore.com

smaller craft, products and services including Raymarine, Waterlodge UK and Fliteboard. Bentley Motors also showcased three models: the Continental GTC Speed, Continental GT Mulliner and the Bentayga Hybrid, which proved popular. “We are absolutely delighted with how well the debut London Luxury Afloat has gone,” said Lesley Robinson, CEO, British Marine. “We have been working closely with the luxury sail and motor yacht market to develop an event tailored to their respective buyers and to see it all come to fruition has been fantastic.”

CLEAN, RESTORE & PROTECT Having already created an award-winning range of Oxford MINT cleaning and maintenance products for motorcycles and bicycles, the company has spent the last two years developing a new range for the marine market. Working closely with industry specialists such as Rodella Ribs of Poole to establish the technical criteria for the products, Oxford has formulated, tested and finetuned each product. Daniel Tomson, Oxford MINT product manager, explained the approach to creating its marine range: “We noticed when reviewing the market that many of the available products did not clearly state what they did. In forming the MINT Marine Range, we wanted to make sure we told the customer exactly what each product was for in order for them to easily choose.” Adopting a Clean, Restore & Protect approach to the range, MINT currently has a 17 product line-up covering everything from Deck Wash and Bilge Cleaner to RIB Tube Restorer and Hull & Deck Carnauba Wax UV Sealer.

MINT Marine is distributed exclusively through Aquafax. Check out the full range at oxfordmint.co.uk/boat or find your local dealer at www.aquafax.co.uk/stockists. Turn to page 40 to enter this month’s fantastic MINT competition.

POWER TALK

Simon Everett is the man in the know when it comes to what is being launched and the latest technologies emerging in marine engines. Get the inside scoop right here…

GETTING PROPELLER PREPARED Sailing readers will be pleased that this month there is something for them in this column, not only them though, commercial operators will also rejoice at the news of an affordable propeller solution for heavy loads such as selfpropelled working pontoons or harbour launches that are required for towing duties. A high trust propeller for most smaller outboards in the 8 – 20hp bracket is a useful tool to have in the box. With very little rake this style of propeller has the same kind of thrust when going astern as going ahead and therefore is ideal for catamarans that carry a small outboard between 8hp and 20hp on each hull and need good control rather than high performance. The same can be said for a floating brick in the form of a modular pontoon, where any additional steerage is welcome. These new propellers are available in various fittings to

suit Yamaha, Honda, Mercury/ Mariner and Tohatsu gearboxes and splines. A major consideration for workboats, especially pontoon work platforms, or anyone running in shallow water situations, is that of propeller damage through striking underwater objects. In these situations, it is wise to carry a spare propeller together with a spare prop nut and split pin in the gear bag. The cost to a construction job through downtime from hitting the propeller can be huge, for the sake of carrying a spare and the means to fit it. The Polastorm propellers offer an affordable means of doing just that with a retail price in the order of £60 - £70, depending on make and size. They are available from Specialist Small Craft (www.specialistsmallcraft.co.uk) who provide a first class service with a rapid courier delivery if required.

Propeller damage is an important consideration for workboats

DOCKMATE TECHNOLOGY Electronics are taking over the world, where once seamanship and personal skill were employed to manage a boat, electronics are being developed, seemingly at the speed of sound, to take over the mantle. Dockmate has developed their system RED at the affordable end of the price spectrum for smaller boats and those with analogue controls for their main engines and thrusters. Dockmate RED is available for single or twin configurations with preset idle speed, on and off thruster selection and an optional anchor control. It consists of a remote control unit that is linked to the controls to provide short-handed cruisers with the ability to step away from the helm to tend lines whilst still maintaining control of slow speed manoeuvring at the touch of a button. The durable, compact and lightweight remote unit weighs just 150 grams and is protected to IP67 standards. The proven reliability of the wireless remote control connection has a range of 50m and has sufficient battery endurance for 15 docking manoeuvres lasting 10 minutes each, or a bit over two hours use between charges. Shootin’ the Breeze

Stunning colours in the Solent in 2019. Image: Paul Wyeth

We catch up with Will Overton, a regular competitor in the Round the Island Race and a director of the Island Sailing Club.

Q

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY FROM THE RACE?

WO There are a couple of stand-out roundings for me. In that same year – 2002 - we came sixteenth or so overall in the Laser 28 I used to do bow on. Then there was a time that we recorded 17.5kts on a broad reach from the Needles to St Cats, somewhere off Brook, not on the plane, partially underwater with a full main and the A3 on the Corby 33 No Retreat! in 30kts of breeze, two-handed as well…

Q

WILL YOU BE TAKING PART IN THE RACE THIS YEAR?

WO Yes, I will certainly be part of the race this year, either on my boat Sundance or shoreside as part of the organising team.

Q Q

HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU STARTED SAILING?

WO I started sailing from the age of about nine or 10. We sailed Oppies and Toppers on the school lakes at Lymington.

Q Q

WHO WILL YOU BE SAILING WITH IF YOU RACE?

WO I am contemplating racing two-handed as it is a part of sailing I really enjoy. There is no one else to blame apart from you and your mate. I am hoping my friend Roeland from Falmouth will come and enjoy the race with me. Image: Paul Wyeth

WHAT TYPE OF BOAT DO YOU PRESENTLY OWN?

WO I recently purchased a Marieholm International Folkboat, Sundance.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST COMPETE IN THE ROUND THE ISLAND RACE?

WO I was a late starter to compete at the Round the Island Race. I guess it would have been around 2002 or so.

RACE PREVIEW NEXT MONTH!

The race continues to live up to its reputation as a ‘Race for All’. Image: Paul Wyeth

Q

ARE THERE ANY CHANGES AT THE RACE THIS YEAR?

WO No changes to the course, keep turning left and do not hit the dry bits! We have got over 100 amazing trophies to win and this year there are also watch prizes from our new partner, The Marathon Watch Company. Check out our trophies section on the event website.

Q

HAS THE PANDEMIC IMPACTED THE BUILD-UP AND PREPARATIONS THIS YEAR?

WO Well I think most people in the marine industry are really busy this year, so getting key jobs booked in requires a bit more planning than usual. It has been great to see a resurgence in yachting from home with many marinas and moorings full to capacity.

Q

WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS SUCH AN ICONIC SAILING EVENT?

WO It is the pinnacle of the yachting year right?! It is great to be part of an event that allows you to test your mettle against seasoned pros and all the people you read about in the yachting press. It really is a ‘Race for All’ welcoming the Corinthian teams, pros, weekend cruisers and racers all to do their best against the famous Solent and Isle of Wight waters… Some of which are known to be the most treacherous waters on our planet.

Q

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE ISLAND SAILING CLUB?

WO The location is great and it is an integral part of Cowes’ rich marine heritage. I am proud to be a member. The club has some great offerings for both cruising and racing sailors and that view from the balcony! It is the best on the South Coast without doubt.

Q

WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?

WO My late Uncle David has always been the one who inspired me to sail and in particular learn how to and enjoy navigating and passage planning all in a time before GPS was a thing. I was addicted to the whole concept of life at sea and I remember as a young boy forcing David to row us out to the boat (on the piles at Yarmouth) in the middle of winter just so I could sit on it and have tea and cake and imagine a life at sea. David would help stir my imagination further with tales of his adventures on Round The Island Races and his blue water escapades. As I grew up we cruised around the spectacular coasts of SW Ireland and NW France aboard his Sadler 34. Date: 25 June www.roundtheisland.org.uk

ROUND-UP

The latest news, information and up-dates from British Marine, the trade association for the UK leisure, superyacht and small commercial marine industry.

EARN WHILE YOU LEARN WITH A MARINE APPRENTICESHIP

Olivia Richards-Smith is an Apprentice Marine Engineer at Sunseeker. Image: Richard Tarr In the past, there has been a bit of a stigma attached to apprenticeships and they have often been looked down upon as only appealing to those who did not do well in mainstream education. That way of thinking is now very much a thing of the past as apprenticeships are recognised as highly credible qualifications by employers seeking employees with hands-on experience, not just with a theoretical understanding. They offer a great way to learn and gain qualifications, while taking home a salary and gaining valuable occupational experience, whatever your age or stage of your career, and there are a whole host of opportunities available within the marine sector. There are different types of apprenticeship schemes, known as Apprenticeship Standards. Within the marine sector these are developed by British Marine in partnership with marine employer groups and cover a wide range of occupations from boat builder to marine engineer, marine electrician to marina and boatyard operative. Starting at Level 2, equivalent to GCSEs, they progress through to Level 7, which is equivalent to a master’s degree. Apprenticeships are funded by the government, making them very cost effective for employers, and last anything from one to five years depending on the particular one that you are undertaking. “There are some really interesting apprenticeships available within the marine sector,” explains Manjinder Mahey, head of training at British Marine. “At British Marine we look after the shoreside apprenticeships, but there are a whole host of on-the-water apprenticeships also available, so no matter your passion there will be one to suit you.” As an apprentice you will be assigned a coach/ mentor who will guide you through, and you will undertake time in the classroom alongside on the

job learning, getting first-hand experience in your chosen field and without incurring lots of debt along the way. Currently some 500 people are undertaking a marine apprenticeship in England and there are many apprentice alumni enjoying successful careers in their chosen field. “With lots of cross over and transferrable skills, anyone undertaking a marine apprenticeship can equip themselves for a successful career both within and outside the marine sector,” explains Manjinder. Many apprentices in the marine sector are aged between 16 – 25-years-old, but it does not mean that they are just for people in this age group. There are a growing number of more mature individuals signing up, using an apprenticeship to facilitate a career change or to upskill in their current role. Take Ulrika Lawrence, training executive at British Marine. Ulrika is currently undertaking a Level 4 Associate Project Manager apprenticeship. “I decided to sign up for an apprenticeship as it allows me to gain real on the job experience, whilst gaining a higher-level qualification, all while getting paid to do it and not taking on any debt. I love it – I have learnt a lot and grown so much both professionally and personally. I would say to anyone thinking of doing one to just do it,” Ulrika comments. British Marine head of finance, Earle Stanner, is currently undertaking a Level 7 apprenticeship MBA in Senior Leadership at the University of Portsmouth. “For me, the MBA develops on my professional accountancy qualification and is allowing me to explore an area of study that I find fascinating and will be very useful to me in the future. “For those considering an apprenticeship, at any level, I would say that, given the current difficulty in finding skilled workers, the qualification that you earn, but more importantly the skills that you gain, will assist you greatly as you progress in your career. An apprenticeship is not only about academic learning, but it facilitates you meeting new and interesting people and learning from their experiences. It takes effort and dedication, but that is an investment in your future which is the best thing you can invest in.” So, whether you are preparing to leave school, want to change careers or are looking to upskill then an apprenticeship might be just what you are looking for. For more information about marine apprenticeships visit: www.britishmarine.co.uk/Careers-and-Training/ Marine-Apprenticeships www.instituteforapprenticeships.org

Shootin’ the Breeze for powerboats ranging from 16 – 50ft. It fills an important void for new and casual users delivering an easy-to-use navigation system. All new menus and tool sets were redesigned with the casual boater in mind, yet the experienced boater will also be delighted by all the features we have packed in.

as you would expect, expandable and integrates with many of the Simrad Command boat system partners that deliver additional functions like audio and digital switching. Boaters who love the Simrad Cruise and Simrad Go family of chartplotters will be tempted to upgrade to NSX. We always aim to push the envelope, so it is no surprise that with this product we have squeezed in a lot of the functionality of our performance flagship NSS and NSO larger systems.

Q

Q

How does it set itself apart?

MF: It has an aesthetic design that is beautiful – refined and slim – which are Simrad hallmarks. The NSX has such a beautiful display with bright, crisp graphics and large fonts. This matches perfectly with our new C-MAP charting which allows for stunning visual charts. And all this in a small compact design. Each size is extremely size efficient with less bezel on the side which means you might well be able to fit a larger Simrad NSX on your dashboard versus other chartplotters.

Q

Tell us what Simrad’s NSX is all about?

MF: The NSX is Simrad’s new chartplotter and fishfinder that streamlines and simplifies the boating experience. It is a great product for boating adventurers of all sorts to create better trips and experiences on the water.

Q

Who is this Simrad product geared towards?

MF: The NSX is really designed towards adventurers for the water lifestyle… weekend cruising, family fishing, diving, watersports, getting to the sandbar and back - the NSX works great for all that. It comes in three screen sizes and it is really ideal

Q

Where does this fit in the Simrad portfolio?

MF: We have really focused on making the new Simrad operating system simple. We have added more aids, wizards and presets than ever before. For casual users, they will have the sense of a guiding hand. Early testers have told us they get comfortable using the NSX very quickly. Experienced users meanwhile will appreciate the finer details like real-time visual setting adjustment – the Simrad DNA is there.

Q

Which features would you especially like to highlight?

MF: I have mentioned the stunning visual charts and charting capability, but the NSX is also compatible with our performance halo radars and has a built-in powerful 1000 watt fishfinder. It is,

So, what is your favourite thing about this product?

MF: I like that it is approachable. The most common story we hear is that a lot of boaters do not use or are not comfortable using a lot of the functionality in their chartplotters or navigation systems. When you start using NSX, learning how to operate it and configuring it for your boat, you find out that it is super easy. We focused on making that process easy and fun. We wanted to deliver better boating adventures. I love that about this product.

The Solent boating community is being invited to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee later in the summer. On 6 August boats of all shapes and sizes representing sailing clubs and yacht clubs from across the Solent region will gather off Osborne Bay and Cowes to celebrate HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Year. It will be an opportunity for the boating community to show their appreciation to The Queen and the support for yachting and boating by the Royal family. The event will also help raise money to provide opportunities for disabled people to get afloat by supporting Wetwheels as the nominated charity. Yachtsman Geoff Holt MBE, founder of the Wetwheels charity and a member of the organising committee, said: “Members of the Royal family have been a common sight at yachting events in the Solent for many years and have supported many local yacht clubs and charities. Yacht and sailing clubs in the Solent region can join the event by ‘saving the date’ and registering their interest in attending by emailing mail@rys.org.uk.

UF50 is a celebration of Uffa Fox’s life and to mark the 50th anniversary of his death. Uffa was a legend in his lifetime (1898-1972), one of the most highly regarded naval architects and enthusiasts of all aspects of sailing, a man of Cowes and East Cowes. Now 12 organisations in Cowes and East Cowes have come together to plan this memorable event. The focal point will be Cowes Parade where a display of around 50 Uffa Fox designed boats will be assembled, a number going back to the 1920s. There will also be an Information Desk on the Parade and visitors will be directed to the Uffa Fox trail around Cowes and East Cowes where examples of Uffa’s history and heritage can be seen at a number of exhibitions, starting with Commodores House where he lived. The Royal London Yacht Club will be running a sailing regatta on 19 and 20 August for Uffa Fox designed dinghies, keelboats and yachts. Organisers have had expressions of interest from more than 100 boat owners including Firefly, National 12, International 14, Redwing, Albacore, National 18, Jollyboat, Flying 10, Flying Fifteen, Fox 18 and 24 and Atalanta.

DOUGAL

Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of leisure boating.

VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY Not all maritime explorers went on to become household names, but the Blyth Tall Ship charity is ensuring one man’s incredible story is not forgotten. The Williams II. Image: Violaman / Shutterstock

encountered very strong headwinds. Smith carried on south knowing that at some point he would be able to tack and head back northwards, but instead, on 19 February 1819, they sighted land. The conditions were not good, so no attempt was made to land but the following day the winds eased, and visibility improved, which allowed them to identify a prominent headland they christened ‘Williams Point’, which they reported to be in position 62° South, 58° West. Recognising that there were other islands in the area, Smith named his discovery the New South Shetlands, but he was aware that his primary objective was to deliver his cargo. Three weeks later the Williams reached Valparaiso. Smith went to the Royal Naval Station to report his discovery. Incredibly, not only was he not believed but he was mocked for mistaking ice for land.

ANTARCTICA SIGHTED

J

ust a few months ago, Dougal’s Dairy featured the extraordinary expeditions mounted by Ernest Shackleton as he pushed out ever further south across the ice towards the pole. No one would deny that these voyages pushed human endurance to the limit and sometimes beyond, but at least the intrepid explorers knew where they were. Incredibly, just 80 years earlier, nobody had ever seen Antarctica and, although the more far-sighted scientists of the day postulated about the existence of a Southern ice cap, it would remain unseen and uncharted. The early 1800s were a period of great upheaval and war, until first Trafalgar and then Waterloo finally brought an end to the major European conflicts. Instead of gearing up for battle, the emphasis was now on voyages of discovery and with it the chance to ‘grab’ new lands for the growing empire. However, whilst the great maritime explorers of this era are well-known names - Cook, Bering and Humboldt to name just a few - there was a great explorer with that most common of names, Smith, that few have heard of and even less who understand the importance of what he did.

YOUNG APPRENTICE

Part of the reason for this was that William Smith did not hail from the popular areas of the south, from the Thames down to Plymouth, but from Blyth, in Northumberland, high on the north-eastern coast. William had already been at sea for a year when Nelson fell at Trafalgar, but rather than fighting in the fleet the young Smith was contesting the elements around Greenland as part of the UK’s whaling fleet. Back then an

apprenticeship afloat ran for seven years, and once William had completed this in 1811 he became the part owner of a new ship that was being laid down back in his home port of Blyth. The new brig would be called the Williams, as three out of the four owners were called William, with her final lay out resulting in a boat that was 75ft long and weighed in at 216 tons. The primary purpose of the Williams was trade and with Smith as her master, she made trips to France and Portugal, before embarking on a number of lengthier voyages to South America. Even in a well-found ship these were risky undertakings, but the fact the Williams not only survived but prospered says much for the skills of her captain.

The ship was well laden, with the cargo including everything from confectionary to iron, books, wine and musical instruments. They called in at Rio De Janeiro to restock, then headed south, passing to the east of the Falkland Islands. As they sailed down towards the Cape, the hopedfor shift in the prevailing winds to allow them to head on westwards never materialised, and instead they

On his return journey to Brazil, Smith wanted to head south of the Horn to prove his doubters wrong, but the conditions in the southern hemisphere winter forced him eastwards back into the Atlantic. After seeing the winter out in Montevideo, with the return of better weather Smith set sail, once more bound for Valparaiso, and not only did he sight land again, but he took soundings to check the seabed, exploring some 150 miles of coastline. This time the Royal Navy not only believed his claims, but chartered Smith and the Williams to conduct an expedition to the area. Smith’s crew would now include a Naval Officer, three midshipmen and a doctor. By late December they were ashore on what was called Livingston Island. They would push on, charting and discovering as they went, before crossing a wide sound that they named Bransfield Sound, after Edward Bransfield, the

NEW DISCOVERY

In 1818 Smith and the Williams set out on what would be a very long trip that was intended to take him to Valparaiso, on the coast of Chile, which meant that they would be rounding Cape Horn. Icebergs floating in Bransfield Strait near the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. Image: dani3315 / Shutterstock

Naval Officer. Eventually they spotted a long peninsular, with this being the first recorded sighting of the mainland continent of Antarctica. As they explored further, they passed the fearsome Elephant Island, which provided yet another link to those later expeditions as it was from these barren and rocky shores that Shackleton set out to sail across 700 miles of the Southern Ocean to get help after the Endurance became trapped in the ice and sank. In April 1820 Smith would land his passengers back at Valparaiso before setting out on the long return journey to the UK. However, in the three years that he had been away the syndicate behind the Williams had run into financial difficulties and Smith, for all his hard work, was now effectively bankrupt. The Williams was sold on as a coal carrier and was eventually broken up in 1882. Smith would eke out a living, firstly as a Thames Pilot before he headed north again to work on a whaling ship, but with his finances broken and little in the way or recognition or reward, he died, almost destitute, in a London almshouse.

THE WILLIAMS II

Happily, the death of William Smith, despite being broke and almost unrecognised, is not the end of our story, for a fantastic initiative back in his home port of Blyth is bringing his spirit back in the most amazing way. The Blyth Tall Ship charity is drawing on the inspirational life of Smith to offer a fantastic opportunity to all ages, but particularly to the young who feel that they lack any hope for the future. The charity views itself as a ‘Gateway to the sea’ through engagement with a Blyth-based cultural centre, a heritage boatyard that can offer a near unique range of skills packages from a simple hands-on taster to a formal qualification in Marine Engineering. However, the jewel in the charity’s crown, their flagship, is a 108-year-old gaff rigged ketch, the Williams II, that shares almost the same dimensions as Smith’s original boat. This Williams II was built in Denmark, but uses the same construction techniques as her namesake, with a double hull which is almost a pre-requisite of working down amongst the ice. Almost the only concession to modern times is the large auxiliary diesel. Now, though, instead of searching for new lands south of the Horn, the Williams II offers local people everything from day trips to longer and more demanding passages, with the choices available dovetailing in neatly with the work of the charity ashore. In these times of uncertainty, the Blyth Tall Ship charity is offering hope and opportunity in much the same way that the Williams did more than 200-years-ago. When one thinks of the challenges that Smith faced, then what he achieved, in a boat no bigger than a modern maxi-racer, you realise that this has to be one of the great untold sea stories of yesteryear. Thanks to the Williams II and the inspired people who sail her, not only is Smith’s story being remembered, but a new chapter is being added for the people of Blyth today. www.blythtallship.co.uk

HOT TOPIC

We discuss important topics with marine industry experts who share their opinions and top tips to help you get the most from your boating. You need the correct mast for type of sailing you do. Image: Dan Ljungsvik

All images: Boat Club Trafalgar

BUYING A MAST FOR YOUR YACHT

Michael Calvert, aftermarket sales manager at Seldén Mast, explains what is involved and how to buy a new mast for your yacht to maximise its performance under sail, whether cruising or racing.

E

very boat needs a propulsion device, whether that is an engine, oars, paddle or sails. For a sailing boat, to ensure efficient and enjoyable sailing, it is not just about having the right sails, the mast is extremely important too. You need to make sure you have the correct mast for the boat and the type of sailing you are doing. Often overlooked is the fact that you do not always need to replace a mast like for like. Just because you purchase your

yacht with a conventional aluminium mast, it does not mean you cannot change it, when the time comes, to an in-mast furling or carbon rig. There is also the option of electrification, powering up your furling mast to make sail handling easier and more controlled. This is something that is particularly attractive on a larger yacht if you are sailing short-handed due to a lack of willing crew or, as you get older, it ensures you can continue to sail your boat for as long as you wish without needing to downsize to manage the loads generated on halyards and sheets. But how do you decide what is right for you and your boat, and where do you start?

ASK THE EXPERT

For a Seldén mast, for example, the first port of call is your nearest Seldén dealer. There are many dealers and service agents around the UK who have the knowledge and expertise to answer any mast related query, taking all factors into account to make sure you get the right mast for you and your boat.

Once it has been established whether you are going down the aluminium or carbon, conventional or furling route, the dealer will work with Seldén to determine the required mast section and quote for your mast, based on your boat’s specifications and Seldén’s database of masts, which is more than 20,000 strong. The type of information needed to specify a mast includes the type of boat e.g. ketch or yawl, righting moment, displacement, type of keel, whether you

are racing and the number of crew on the rail and location of the chain plates, measured laterally and longitudinally. How the rig is stayed greatly affects the mast section specified.

DOUBLE CHECK

Once the mast has been specified, all the measurements will be double checked to ensure the rig choice is 100 per cent suitable for the boat. At this point, optional extras and custom items can be added, for example, fittings for spinnaker handling or instrument brackets. From this final specification, a bill of materials

is created, which will then be checked, along with the structural stability of the mast, by Seldén’s technical department in Sweden. Your dealer and you then look over the final bill of materials, double checking it has everything you need before one last check. The mast then goes into production and, when it is ready, it is supplied to your dealer for stepping. Although a lot of information is needed, buying a new mast is not difficult. Specialist dealers will do all the hard work for you – just give them a call and they will do the rest. www.seldenmast.com

JAYWALKING THE WORLD All at Sea reader Stephen J Payne shares the early days of his French travels on board his Birchwood cruiser.

YOUIRES! STOR

O

n 27 June 2021 at 1.03pm, I left Ramsgate, and the UK, for the foreseeable future. I had bought a boat, Jaywalking the World, 18 months earlier and now there was no turning back. I was heading south at 135 degrees with France my next stop. I had spent the previous 18 months prepping for my trip

and watching a lot of Netflix thanks to Covid. I started in Bray, about 50km east of London, slowly getting to know my boat, a 1987 Birchwood TS37. Once I felt confident enough I took the boat to Chatham, Swale and then Ramsgate, where I completed my radio, ICC and CEVNI courses which would allow me

to use the French waterways. To use the wonderful French canals and rivers you will also need a radio licence, insurance that covers France and your VNF vignette (available online at €130/month).

AND SO IT BEGINS

Exactly three hours after leaving Ramsgate I entered The Port of Calais.

I had done my homework, but when I arrived on Saturday the tide was too low to enter the marina and on the Sunday they were closed... oops. So Monday it was, but by this time the boat batteries were too low to start the motors and a quick rewire to charge up from my solar panel was needed, but would my trusty genny start? No it would not. Boat life is great, right? Eventually, I met up with a friend and within a couple of days we were off, headed south towards the

Mediterranean. The locks as you leave Calais are big, and big locks are the rule all the way until about 120km south of Paris. You will need two people on board, but once you get the hang of them, they are not difficult. Call on the radio about 200m before the lock and they will tell you what to do. There are also lights to tell you when it is safe to enter. Just south of Calais you will find some swing bridges. If nobody is manning the booth, you will need to tie off somewhere and call the phone number, which can be found displayed at the booth, but it might be smaller than expected, so have your glasses handy. Once you enter the first few locks, a friendly VNF person will help you by driving to the next lock and meeting you there. It might seem unusual, but it worked very well for us. Part of the reason for having to get some qualifications is because further south you merge with bigger canals again and you will be sharing the waterways with 5,000-ton commercial barges - and they have priority. Everyone was very polite and friendly, but that is probably because I knew what I was doing and stayed out of their way. Before I left the UK, being a filmmaker, I decided to film my complete journey because it is not often you get to take yourself on such an amazing adventure and I wanted to share it with my friends... and you. So far, I’m on episode #43. You can find me on YouTube at www.youtube. com/c/JaywalkingTheWorld. Send your stories to editor@allatsea.co.uk

Working Together PlainSailing.com launched a partnership with Navily (Navily.com) to help their clients make the most of their time on holiday by finding the nicest bays, accessing the latest weather, planning a route and helping them to choose the best anchorages. Navily’s free service offers detailed maps of bays, anchorages and marinas which are then coupled with approved reviews, photos and ratings. However, it is Navily’s premium service, which PlainSailing.com customers will get for free as part of their booking, that can make a sailing holiday even more plain sailing: including using the latest weather data, quick and simple plotting of routes and distances and booking a berth in a marina (at a growing number of marinas). In further news from the yacht and catamaran charter experts, they have smashed their target to become carbon neutral by 2023. PlainSailing.com now have a carbon negative footprint whereby they take out more carbon from the atmosphere than they create. This has been achieved by, for example, using solar lighting and running servers on renewable energy. PlainSailing.com

It will be cheaper and less busy too.  Longer charters – Interestingly a charter of more than three weeks might bring with it a very tempting discount..  Combine discounts – Take a look at Dream Yacht Charter’s bareboat yacht charter special offers. Combine different discounts and the savings will soon add up.  Additional costs – Be aware of local mooring fees, if any at all, and costs for your onshore activities.

Your Unique Voyages Borrow-A-Boat’s Matt Ovenden shares some of the best yachting adventures to undertake this year. Matt said: “When chartering a yacht, the key thing to consider is what kind of experience you are after, and once you have nailed this you can start to research the best locations for the kind of trip you want – whether that is sunshine and relaxation, a beginner’s guide to sailing or a more unique adventure. “For those wanting a traditional sunshine break with a twist, popular spots include Croatia, Greece and the Balearic Islands, however looking slightly further afield means you will not only experience the blue skies and sunshine you are after, but you will also discover lesserknown beauty spots and wildlife in abundance. “But for thrill seekers looking for a more out-there adventure, look to destinations like Norway, Sweden and even Scotland. Whilst they may not present the same opportunities for sunshine, instead picture an unforgettable backdrop of mountains, glaciers and deep coastal fjords.” Some of Matt’s suggestions include: Norway: Jaw-dropping mountains, cascading waterfalls and the chance to spot the Northern Lights make the fjords of Norway one of the best places to enjoy a boating adventure. Sail past some of Europe’s most dramatic coastline.  Watersports – The choice of water toys is huge these days, but including them can soon add up. Perhaps take a vote and choose the most popular.  Early boarding – Check in and depart on the same day.  Delivery sailing – Experienced sailors can help charter businesses get ready for the season by sailing boats to bases. If you are flexible, this could suit you. www.dreamyachtcharter.co.uk

The Galapagos Islands: 600 miles from mainland Ecuador, a sailing trip around The Galapagos Islands will see travellers taking on a true nautical adventure. Not only will you be able to visit some of the most remote and unspoilt locations in the world, but expect to see dolphins alongside your boat, whale sharks swimming by and eagle rays springing from the ocean. West Coast of Scotland: While Scotland might not immediately come to mind when you think of yachting adventures, thanks to the magnificent scenery there is good reason for it to be at the top of travellers’ lists. If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of busy daily life, look no further than a sailing trip along the West Coast. Spend a week away from all forms of civilisation and make yourself at home in a deserted anchorage. To rent your own charter visit borrowaboat.com.

The ‘first-timer’ video is presented by Laurence Mead, Cowes Week Regatta Director The Cruising Association and Cowes Week organisers have teamed up to produce a ‘first-timer’ video for those thinking of racing for the first time. Packed with helpful information the video, presented by Laurence Mead Cowes Week Regatta Director, discusses everything from insurance to the starting line. The video will prove equally helpful for owners and skippers who regularly race and may be introducing new crew to Cowes Week. The Cruising Association is proud to be partnering with Cowes Week for the second year as presenting trophy sponsor for the Club Cruiser Class, which made its debut in 2021. Taking place from 30 July - 5 August, Cowes Week is the pre-eminent regatta week in the UK with racing on the world-renowned Solent courses and an après sail programme that makes sure the fun continues long after the racing finishes.

Watch the video at www.theca.org.uk/news/cowesweek-first-timer-video. “Many of our members enjoy the thrill of competition as well as more leisurely time cruising,” said Lucy Gray, CA General Manager. “We hope this video will be a useful guide for those racing for the first time, demystify competing and encourage more entries in the Club Cruiser Class.” “We consulted with our members and lined up a pile of questions that are likely to crop up for new competitors,” continued Lucy. “The video is intended as a ‘walk through’ of what to expect.” Both the CA and Cowes Week organisers are excited to encourage the new racing division for cruising sailors, with the Club Cruiser Class dedicated to genuine cruising boats who also enjoy the thrill of competition. “We are delighted that the Cruising Association is again working with us at Cowes Week to bring the Club Cruiser Class to the attention of more sailors,” added Laurence Mead. “The Cruising Association Trophy was won by ‘Chameleon of Cowes’ last year and the challenge is there to win it off them! Cowes Week is an eclectic mix of racing and socialising, a 196-year-old tradition that is as much about having fun with your friends as it is about hard-core racing.” In 2021, the Club Cruiser Class featured a broad line-up of popular cruising yachts, including Bavaria, Beneteau, Carter, Dehler, Dufour, Sigma, Westerly and Folkboat, and so far this year entries include a Rustler 33, Finngulf 33, First 285 and Super Seal 26. The event format is one race per day, with several starts off the iconic Royal Yacht Squadron line. Entries are open at www.cowesweek.co.uk.

This month we catch up with the couple and their four cats as they stopover in La Rochelle before making their way to Spain.

Give Naughty Cat a wave if you see her!

W

e departed Bourgenay with clear skies and wind speeds of 10.2 knots. The wind direction was constantly changing so it was easier to manually steer the boat. With the Code Zero sail up we only maintained 5.5 knots due to the sea swell. We could have tacked all the way down to La Rochelle, but we put the engines on after three hours as we needed to be there early in order to exchange our defective Navionics card at the boat show as previously agreed with the company we purchased it from in Les Sables d’Olonne. There were many boats in the water around Port Minimes La Rochelle and we radioed in asking for permission to enter the marina. We were guided into a tight berth just outside the Capitainerie (marine office), between two enormous catamarans. The Grand Pavois (boat show) was set up and open to the public, and although it was taking place just a few metres from our boat we had to walk right around the marina to get to the main entrance. We were fortunate that the Capitainerie gave us a couple of complimentary tickets to the show, which we decided to use the following day. We got up early on Friday and walked to the show, although it was cold, windy and raining very hard. We had a list of things that we wanted to purchase but soon realised that the stalls had no stock. They were all merely displaying and advertising their goods, not physically selling anything, which was very disappointing. We toured a 45ft Fountaine Pajot and were very impressed with the boat’s finish, but the English salesman explained that there was a four-year waiting list for a new one. We also visited the local Nautitech dealer and had a look around a new Nautitech Open 40. It was very nice as they had made several changes to the design, but we said that we still prefer the layout of Naughty Cat.

Naughty Cat moored at La Rochelle

order for delivery in two weeks’ time to A Coruna, hoping that we would arrive there in time.

SAILING TO SPAIN

The couple were excited to launch their new bright pink Asymmetric downwind sail for the first time

FELINE CELEBRITIES

IN NEED OF A BROLLY

The next day we took the water bus from the marina to the town as it was an extremely long walk. The town was very pretty with lots of lovely shops, restaurants, creperies and bars both along the waterfront and in the town centre. There was a beautiful display of pink umbrellas suspended across the market square and appearing to float in the sky, which were representing Breast Cancer Awareness month. We walked to the area where all the chandleries were, clutching a list of spares we required, but unfortunately none of them had anything we needed. It was raining again and extremely windy and, by the time we got back, we were both very wet

There was a special offer on that month (out of season) so we actually got four nights for the price of three. We both had a lot of jobs that we wanted to do anyway, so were able to make use of the extra time. Gordon took out our cocktail cabinet to access the holding tank in order to unblock a small breather pipe and also polished the side of the boat. I arranged a home delivery of groceries to the marina from Carrefour and used the local laundry. While there we chatted to other boat owners in the marina as it is always really useful to swap information and gain knowledge from others, especially those on similar adventures. During the really heavy downpours Gordon spent time playing his electric guitar too (yes, he did find space to bring one guitar and an amp with us).

and cold. As the weather forecast was predicting high winds and heavy rain for the following few days, we decide to pay for extra nights in La Rochelle in addition to the two free nights we had with Passeport Escales.

As usual, our four fluffy felines attracted a lot of attention. The cats enjoy being minor celebrities and are always happy to pose for photographs, when requested by fellow sailors, as it breaks up their routine of sleeping, eating and grooming. Our cat food supplies were running very low so during the evenings I spent a lot of time researching companies who provided BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) in Spain and Portugal. As the cats’ usual brand of food was not available in Western Europe, I needed to find a suitable alternative. Eventually, after several emails, phone calls and conversations, I chose to use Puro Menu, a small Spanish company who sell frozen BARF products at reasonable prices and deliver throughout Spain and Portugal. This meant that the cats could eat a consistent diet for several months. I placed an online

With an immaculately clean, polished and maintained yacht, we departed La Rochelle and set sail for Royan. Sailing alongside a Dutch couple in a monohull called Alani, whom we had become friendly with in La Rochelle, Naughty Cat handled the large sea swell and made a good 7-8 knots with engines on and main sail up. The journey took nine hours. We left Royan early the next morning, keen to get to Bilbao, Spain. This journey would take us a lot longer and meant that we would be travelling overnight, something that I do not really like doing. The day was sunny and clear and the wind was averaging at 8 knots, so we travelled well and at one point had the Main, Jib and Gennaker sails up together. In the late afternoon we had a suitable wind and we were very excited to launch our new bright pink Asymmetric downwind sail for the first time. Night fell and we were still sailing well. Then, at 21.35, we received an urgent call on the VHF radio from a fishing vessel asking us to change course as he was trawling in front of us. We tried to alter our course but as the downwind sail was on the opposite side, we had to furl it up first. We changed direction to avoid being caught up in the fishing vessel’s nets and then opted not to put the Asymmetric sail up again as it was dark and we were going to start taking shifts at the helm. This decision actually cost us about five hours and we arrived in Bilbao much later than planned at 11.45am but we had made it to Spain! Bekki and Gordon departed from Chatham Maritime Marina in September 2021 with their four cats, Diamond Dancer, Coffee Cupcake, Vanilla Cheesecake and Strawberry Shortcake, heading to the Mediterranean for the start of their adventure, which may last a year or more. For updates from Bekki and Gordon, follow Naughty Cat on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube (Naughty Cat Sailing), and you can also read regular up-dates about their adventure in All at Sea. www.facebook.com/NautitechOpen40

Avon Marina Rossiter’s Quay, Christchurch, Dorset BH23 1DZ T: 01202 612610 E: info@avonmarina.com W: avonmarina.com

This month we are visiting the family run Avon Marina in Christchurch, Dorset, which is set in beautiful surroundings, whilst only being a few minutes from the centre of the town. Previously known as Rossiters Boatyard, Avon Marina was bought in 2019 by a local family and comprehensive improvement works commenced straight away to make it a place for visitors to enjoy whilst providing a wrap-around fully operational boatyard with on-site engineers, fuel station, boat sales and chandlery.

The marina is set in a beautiful, historyrich town with picturesque views of the Christchurch Priory, one of the longest parish churches in the country, Stanpit Marsh, a 65-hectare nature reserve designated a ite of pecial cientific nterest in and Hengistbury Head, which is a site of international archaeological importance.

There is a friendly, dedicated boat sales team

ACCESS

Avon Marina is situated at the lower reaches of the River Avon. Coming into Christchurch Harbour caution is advised due to a changing bar and a fast-flowing run. There is a 4-knot limit in the harbour. Channel marker buoys are placed at the entrance as assistance from Easter to October. Once through the harbour take the starboard route by Clay Poole toward the River Avon. For navigation information please refer to the latest Admiralty Navigation charts or speak to the local NCI on VHF 65.

RECOMMENDATION

CRUISING

Avon Marina is conveniently located halfway between Lymington and Poole, making it a perfect base to start or finish a day excursion to the Jurassic Coast, which lies off to the west, or a visit to the famous Needles at the Isle of Wight to the southeast. There are also many other beautiful coastlines to see whilst cruising the Solent.

THINGS TO DO

Whether it is a simple ice cream by the river or a gourmet meal in a restaurant with celebrity chef connections, Christchurch has it all. Eating out here is a pleasure for all the senses, not just the tastebuds. Being in the centre of a historic town steeped in history there is plenty of olde world charm mixed in with a range of

“The dream has always been to own a boat and when I was lucky enough to realise that dream, the importance of where to moor my boat somewhere that was secure, tranquil and with an attractive environment became a very real problem. After searching I came across Avon Marina – a marina where the staff, management and owners are all striving and succeeding in transforming this former boatyard into a first-class marina. With the introduction of additional facilities including fuel, on-site chandlery and upgrades to the current facilities and a much-needed overhaul to the engineering department (who offer all the servicing, repairs and assistance needed but more importantly they offer honest, trustworthy advice) Avon Marina is setting itself above the rest. The staff are determined to maintain a balance of a community feel whilst achieving the business’ core values. I feel that Avon Marina is set to not only become the leading marina in Christchurch, but in time the benchmark for other marinas along the south coast.” Mr S Mooring holder

NEW MARINE ACADEMY OPENS

DRIVING INNOVATION Electric charging specialist Aqua superPower has joined the line-up of eco exhibitors at the Green Tech Boat Show, which is returning to MDL’s Queen Anne’s Battery Marina from 16 – 18 June. Following its attendance at last year’s event, Aqua superPower partnered with MDL Marinas to install electric boat chargers at five of MDL’s marinas. Returning for 2022, Aqua superPower will be showcasing its dockside charging infrastructure created at Plymouth Sound through the MeLL project. Part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition launched in March 2021, the MeLL project is funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. Aqua superPower is the technology partner for the project, which is led by fellow Green Tech Boat Show exhibitor, the University of Plymouth in partnership with Plymouth City Council. Plymouth is to install Aqua superPower’s fast chargers for its expanding fleet of electric vessels, including the UK’s first marine electric passenger ferry and an electric water taxi.

“Last year’s Green Tech Boat Show was a high-quality event and very relevant to Aqua as we were just launching our network,” said Alex Bamberg, CEO of Aqua superPower. “We consider MDL and the Green Tech Boat Show to be the best platform and educational event in this sector and as a proactive player in the market, it is important for us to participate in the show to demonstrate our marine fast charge network and its benefits. “The growth of the Green Tech Boat Show to what it is this year makes this an important forum to help drive innovation, exchange knowledge with industry peers and connect with important stakeholders.” Aqua superPower is just one of the Green Tech Boat Show’s sustainable boating brands and marine businesses that will be presenting their products to boat owners wishing to make the switch to greener options, and prospective owners who would like to start their boating journey in the most environmentally-friendly way possible. Visitor attendance to the show is free. Tickets can be booked via the Green Tech Boat Show page at: www.mdlmarinas.co.uk/gtbs

Around the marinas... Proposals for Ardrossan Marina, part of wider £170 million regeneration plans for the town, have moved a significant step forward. North Ayrshire Council and partner Clyde Marina signed heads of terms to effectively formalise the financial and investment relationship. Boat brokerage, engineering and Yamaha servicing outfit The Boat Shop Worldwide Ltd has relocated to Fambridge Yacht Haven, taking tenancy of a new state-of-the-art unit on the banks of the River Crouch in Essex. IGY Málaga Marina has seen a twoyear renovation that has resulted in the creation of 33 slips, 31 of which are dedicated to superyachts up to 180m with two reserved for local tourist boats. The Waterfront at Sovereign Harbour, Eastbourne is now fully let with Bella Sol, a tanning salon, joining the line-up of tenants. Already offering an impressive array of food and drink, pamper and retail outlets, as well as refurbished office suites, with free car parking, the lettings add to the variety of facilities on offer here. A sustainability project involving the pontoons of coastal marinas, marine industry organisations and conservation

bodies is seeking to restore wild oyster populations. The Wild Oysters Project owes its origins to pioneering work undertaken by Blue Marine Foundation and the University of Portsmouth. Walcon Marine has completed the upgrade of berthing facilities at Albert Pier for Ports of Jersey. The aim was to create up to 26 new berths with 24-hour access for some of Jersey’s larger vessels. The new pontoons are being used as temporary berths during the refurbishment of nearby St Helier Marina, due to be completed this month. Suntex Marinas has completed its integration with Westrec Marinas following the announcement of the two companies’ merger. The Suntex portfolio includes marinas in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Texas, Tennessee and Virginia. Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners have launched a new website at yarmouth-harbour.co.uk which aims to create a place where visiting seafarers and the local community can see the latest harbour updates and discover, for example, ‘Things To Do’, ‘Tides & Weather’ and ‘What’s On’. Read more news at www.allatsea.co.uk.

A new marine academy that aims to close the skills gap and meet the demands of a changing marine and maritime sector has officially opened on the banks of the River Dart. The South Devon College Marine Academy is based on a historic former boat building yard, within Premier Marinas’ £75 million Noss-on-Dart development, and will offer state-ofthe-art facilities to all its students. The new South Devon College Marine Academy has been 10 years in the planning and became a reality when Premier Marinas acquired the

site and supported the development of the specialist training facility. Marine courses span Further Education, Apprenticeships, Short Courses and Degree Level Study with students aged from 14. “The curriculum is designed to be accessed by all, inclusive of age and importantly to meet the needs of industry, increasing employability and progression opportunities,” said Steve Caunter, South Devon College Assistant Principal, senior leader with strategic responsibility for the Hi Tech, Digital and Professional curriculum.

THE CHANGING FACE OF MARINAS Comparing today’s crystal-clear full colour shots with the sepia toned aerial images of the 1970s it is hard to imagine they are the same marina, separated by half a century. So much has changed at Hampshire’s Lymington Yacht Haven and for the Yacht Havens Group as they celebrate their first 50 years.

1963

A

Safe Haven - derived from the Dutch word ‘jachthaven’ meaning “safe haven for yachts”, their first marina, Lymington Yacht Haven opened for business in May 1972, with annual berthing available at £6.25 per foot. 12 years after plans were first conceived by a group of local yachtsmen, including Dutch dredging contractor Hems Kalis, with one shared vision: to build a marina. In the early days, when money was tight, Hems provided a personal guarantee to pay Westminster Dredging Company for the design and build of the marina. Once works started, Lymington Yacht Haven proceeded to sell a number of 20-year berthing contracts, raising £600,000 which paid for marina construction works in full. There were only a few UK yacht marinas in the 1960s and most boats were kept afloat on river moorings close to a yacht club with basic facilities. The Yacht Havens Group managing director Dylan Kalis explains: “Boat owners were obliged to park either at or near their local yacht club and row out to their boat on its mooring. The concept of being able to walk down a pontoon and step on to the boat directly was a huge novelty. Cynics said it would never catch on!” Reflecting on those early days, Yacht Havens Group chairman Dirk Kalis added: “Walk-on pontoons extended many customers’ boating activities by a good decade.”

Then and now

In the early days the 200ft vessel Medina served as the temporary marina office with any servicing or maintenance undertaken in the workshop barge Actief, until 1977 when construction began on the main office building. By the late 1980s Yacht Havens Group were well established, involved in building and operating a number of marina projects around the UK including Largs, Swansea, Hartlepool and Pwllheli. Fast forward to 2022 and the group now successfully operates from nine locations: Lymington, Plymouth, North Fambridge, Neyland, Troon and Largs in the UK and Jachthaven Biesbosch in the Netherlands.

People at the heart of Yacht Havens Group One thing that has remained a constant throughout those 50 years has been the Group’s commitment to providing a first-class service. To consistently deliver on that commitment across all nine marinas has meant pin-pointing a winning formula, and that is their people. In every one of their marinas you will find a friendly, knowledgeable, service-orientated group of individuals, proud to don their Yacht Haven uniform, keen to serve their boating communities; from responding to berth holders’ enquiries to checking and taking in lines.

1975

Berth holder Chris explains: “With a youngish family we are relatively new to sailing, so we radio ahead when we are coming into the marina and there is always someone there to take in our lines. Nobody sits on their laurels at the Yacht Haven, they do not just provide a service, there are always signs of improvement, from upgrading pontoons to the car park entry system, fabulous shower block and furniture in the restaurant. They are consistently investing in the latest technology to make life easier for berth holders.” Expansion of Lymington Yacht Haven has also been impressive - now housing over 600 berths (originally 400), parking for 350 cars, ancillary buildings, hard standing for 230 boats, EV charging and a popular bar/restaurant.

and his beloved 34ft Solitaire in 1981, after 47 weeks, 329 days and 28,496 miles at sea. He remained a regular and popular face at the Yacht Haven. A sense of community has always been as important to the Group as it is to berth holders. Chris explains: “It is more than a place to park my boat, we enjoy family cruising, racing and getting out for local Solent adventures. We have made friends with our berth neighbours, and I often go and sit on the boat for coffee, it is such a lovely place to be.” MD Dylan Kalis concludes: “We are proud of our association with the yachting fraternity around the UK and will continue to offer our customers a safe and friendly place to keep their boats. It is thanks to the vision, drive and persistence of the original shareholders that Lymington Yacht Haven was built, and we remain indebted to our many loyal customers who have chosen to berth their boats with us since 1972.”

In the drink With Paul Antrobus

BY PAUL ANTROBUS

he ri e is i ht Not all prices are necessarily rising, as we discover when it comes to wine buying!

O

ne way to help alleviate the rising-price crisis is to take an open-minded look at the bottom shelf in the wine section. Price has always been a marketing factor for supermarkets building their own brand images for the whole range of things we buy, and wine is a permanent area for special offers. While the brands focus on taste and grape provenance to attract regular buyers who develop their favourites, supermarkets focus on price, with special offers and multi-buy discounts.

PRICE DRIVEN?

So, in response to the cost of living crisis, could we buy wines based on price alone? Purists would say that a very low price inevitably means inferior wine. But is it a question of a bottle of cheap wine or a cheap bottle of good enough wine? I did a bit of searching just based on price. Not exhaustive or scientifically valid, just illustrative, and there are of course other supermarkets with similar price reducing promotions. I set a price maximum of £5 a bottle

and set up a small tasting panel to try some of these bargains for everyday use. I was surprised by the number of options. At Aldi, which has made low price a key feature in its brand marketing, there was a four metre stretch of bottom shelf offerings with at least 40 wines priced between a low £2.99, for a non-specific red at 11.5 per cent abv named Baron Saint Jean and made specially for Aldi, up to several at £4.99. In between there were Portuguese Vino Verdes, German Reislings, South African and Australian Merlots and Italian Chianti. The benchmark for our tasting were the Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc from the Sainsbury’s ‘House’ collection, which are all £5 or under on the shelf.

This exercise suggests that if a good buy-on-price strategy is to be open to less well known brands, focus on the grape provenance and wait for the 25 per cent off for a multi-buy of any six bottles that many supermarkets do in the lead up to Bank Holidays. This, for instance, brings a £6.50 shelf price down to £4.88 and you can get some very acceptable wines such as Beefsteak Club Malbec, Barefoot Malbec and Merlot and even a Bonpas Côtes du Rhône under the £5 max target. Bottom line? Yes, we can shop by price as the main factor and find some perfectly ‘good‘ wines for everyday to keep us happy while other costs soar.
