Save the Earth… …IS THE CRY OF THE HOUR AS WE ARE WITNESSING EXTREME CLIMATE CHANGE DUE TO GLOBAL WARMING WHICH IS THREATENING OUR EXISTENCE. AS APRIL 22 IS WORLD EARTH DAY, RAJANY PRADHAN SPOKE TO A FEW RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS WHO ARE DOING THEIR BIT TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT.

Everyday should be World Earth Day. Earth is the mother of millions of people living in it and it is our duty to protect it. We have done irreversible damage to our planet due to our ignorance. My message for the day to everyone is that please do not waste water, do not waste paper or wood, recycle them and plant trees. Every single step taken towards protecting the environment is a welcome step.

—MIKE PANDAY, Nature filmmaker and Conservationist

Everyone in this earth should plant at least one tree if not too many. We all should remember just one thing - plants can live without us but can we live without plants? We can't, so it's our necessity to plant trees, water them and nurture them to save our planet. In 2003, we planted around 100 trees at ITO, in which 60 trees survived and are still there. Whenever I cross the place and see people standing under them during summers, it fills me with instant joy.

—ASHA THAKUR, CEO, Green View Project

ecurrent natural calamities causing destruction the human clan has ever witnessed, extreme weather changes, uneven rainfall and devastating draught we are seeing it all and even know the reason why? The irreparable damage we have caused to our environment is now showing on the surface and its frightening avatar is threatening our existence. As its World E a r t h Day on April 22, we spoke to a few responsible citizens who are doing their bit and has a 'green' message for everyone.

There is a wellk n o w n saying 'Think local and act g l o b a l ' . Everybody can contribute their bit for the environment. If not much, we can at least cooperate and keep100 meters distance from our home clean, green and garbage free. We even have a programme called 'Crash-the trash' where we do our bit to keep our surroundings clean.

For me, 365 days in a year is Earth Day. I'll like to tell people that please don't use extra water, don't overheat and respect the environment. I think the basic awareness should start at the school level. The environment programs in school should deal with the issue seriously. Just limiting it to singing and dancing won't solve any purpose. Also, in schools kids make posters on environment and use chemical paints. That's not how it should be.

—DR MADHUMITA PURI, Executive Director of the NGO Prabhat

—AMBIKA SHUKLA, Animal rights activist

If deforestation and butchering of animals continues the way it has been going on right now, protecting the environment will remain a far fetched dream. Environment issue has become big and is always talked about nowadays but lots have done and the effort has to be taken by everyone. Our ecological balance has been disturbed due to our ill-actions and till date majority of people are mere mute spectators of the devastation.

—SAURAV GUPTA, Animal Welfare Officer, PFA
