REFLECTIONS By Dr. Jun Vencer
I
PRIORITIES IN LIFE
f 80% of what you do, anyone can do, if 15% of what you do someone can do, and if only 5% of what you do only you can do, what would be in your 5% things-to-do that really matters to you? – Wayne Cordero The question of priorities is of prime importance. This is increasingly true when one is burned out or for those who are not getting any younger. This is true with newly married Christian couples who are consumed with the success syndrome of our materialistic culture that has declared a violent war against our bodies, spouses, children and family. They worked so hard to secure the future of their children yet paradoxically in increasing distance from each other and their children. Then their homes become empty nests and they realized that they have missed precious and irretrievable moments with each other and their children. Bible certainly is confronting us with priorities. The fact is that our life-span is not indefinite. The writer of Hebrews say, It is appointed unto everyone once to die and after that the judgment (9:27). There is both certainty and finality in this statement. For this reason, priority is critical to life’s purpose and meaning. Jesus raised the issue of priority for His disciples instructing them: Seek first the kingdom of God and all will be added to you (Matt. 6:33-34). This brings us back to Cordero’s 5% (or Pareto’s 20% that produces 80% of the results). What are my priorities? 1. God. This deal with my devotion, prayer, study and faith that add up to my spiritual growth and knowledge and dependence upon Him for all things. 2. Wife (spouse). I need to spend more and more time with her and to nourish that loving relationship. We spend our lives preparing for the future, rather than enjoying the present, and end up postponing
Jennylyn Mercado on working with John Lloyd Cruz: ‘Grabe ‘yung pressure’
J
ennylyn Mercardo admitted that she feels pressured being paired with John Lloyd Cruz for the first time in the new Star Cinema movie Just the 3 of Us. Hindi rin ako nagi-expect ng kahit ano pero siyempre ‘yung mga ginawa niyang pelikula puro blockbusters so nakakatakot baka hindi ko mapantayan,” she said in an interview with the press on the set of the movie. She added that it had been tough to adjust initially. “Medyo matagal po talaga akong nakakapag-adjust, hindi lang sa set, sa lahat ng nangyayari sa buhay ko.” Jennylyn plays the role of CJ, a ground stewardess. According to the actress, her role is far different from the

ones she played before. “Para sa akin kasi it’s different usually di ba ‘yung natatapos na magkaka-family, magkaka-baby. Ito magsisimula siya ng may baby, anong gagawin niyo? Tapos ‘yung character ko naman iba rin kasi first time kung gumawa ng character na dumating na sa point na ano nababaliw na siya, ganyan lumoka-loka na.” On her love scene with John Lloyd in the film, she relayed, “Ano naman eh maganda ‘yung pagkakagawa ni direk (Cathy Garcia-Molina). Medyo intense pero maganda. Tulad nong sabi ni direk si John Lloyd very gentle talaga siya, takot siyang hawakan ako.” Jennylyn further shared that it has been a great experience working with direk Cathy. “Sobrang saya ng set namin
happiness. 3. Family. The blessings of God is generational (Ex. 10:2; Deut. 4:9). We are to fight for and not neglect our children and grandchildren (Neh. 4:4). They are not just addendum to our lives but are accountabilities before God. Are our children and grandchildren godly? 4. Work/Ministry. I will always be grateful for the spiritual gifts that God gave me and for the ministries that He allowed me serve His people worldwide. But without God and wife and family, I really have no ministry. 5. Health. There is a need for exercise, healthy foods, and adequate rest for the body, mind and soul. One has to be intentional about the Sabbath rest. The Chinese pictograph for the word busy is heart and killing. If the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit then it should not be beat up with work-overdrive and laid to rest early 6.\ Friends. We need the support and encouragement of friends, to have fun with them and enjoy life. Friends can half our sorrow and multiply our joys. 7. Legacy. As you pass the baton in the relay of life to the next generation, how would you like to be remembered? The best legacy to leave the next generation is a life of integrity, a good name, and a family in the Lord. The Bible says that God created us all with eternity in our hearts. We believe that there is life beyond the grave. Notice how we change terminologies from graveyard to cemetery to memorial parks. We want a place where wrong is made right, where there is no more suffering, where the internet connections are excellent, where beauty never fades, where there is no more loneliness and conflicts. This being the case, it would matter then where the “dead” will spend eternity. Death is a change of address – from Earth to heaven or hell. Only in Jesus Christ will one enter heaven and have eternal rest. What is your 5% priority in life? Dr.Agustin (Jun) Vencer, Jr. (LLB, DD, DLitt, PHD Applied Theology) is the President of Global Transformational Ministries and Pastor of the Alliance International Church of Pearland in Texas, USA. He is married to Annabella Castillo Vencer. They have four children and six grandchildren. His biography is Poor Is No Excuse, written by John Allan and originally published by Pater Noster in England. eh. The actress also previously worked with Kapamilya actors Sam Milby and Jericho Rosales. When asked if she makes comparisons of the three actors, she replied, “Ayokong mag compare, magkakaiba silang tatlo, makakaiba talaga, totally different, mag-
kakaiba ‘yung personalities.” - By Kristhoff Cagape

cademy Award nominee and singer Hailee Steinfeld said her first love is music. “I started trying to pursue music at the same time as acting and the acting happened faster and first. And so the music kind of took a back seat, became more of a side project the last couple of years, but I think I really always secretly hoped that the music would happen for me through a movie and it’s totally happening.” One of the songs in her album Haiz is “Love Yourself.” About the song, Hailee said, “’Love Myself’ is a self-empowerment anthem, that really represents and reminds people the importance of self-love and self-confidence.” Another song from Haiz is “Rock Bottom.” “It’s the idea that when we love someone so much, we almost allow them to drive us crazy because we love them. That’s kind of Rock Bottom.”
Hailee also revealed her grandfather is a Filipino. “My grandfather is Filipino, my great-grandfather came from Bicol…from my mama’s side.” She added, “I’ve heard so many incredible things and my Papa, I think, really represented Filipinos with his pride and his passion.” For this reason, Hailee said she feels right at home in the Philippines. “Being here has been incredible because I’m so far away from home but I feel as if I’m home because of that.” On Fast Talk, Hailee was asked who the sexiest man in the world is and she answered with the help of the audience, “Joe Jonas. Zac Efron. There are so many sexy men in this world!”

Tapos yung title nung e-mail ‘Bakit Di Totohanin,’ ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ Episode 716. So sabi ko, why my song for an American TV series? Tapos sumagot siya sabi niya kasi nga meron daw scene for that episode where the characters are in the Philippines, so they wanted to make the scene look and sound authentic that’s why they decided to use a Tagalog song,” lahad ng dating singer sa kanyang interview. Umere ang episode noong April 1, 2016 at nag-trending ito sa social media matapos mapanuod ng Pinoy netizens ang naturang episode kung saan ginamit ang kanta ni Carol. hile she was forthcoming in her Extra interview last week, Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach was mum when she was asked recently about her love life. Pia quietly flew back to the country last Good Friday for a short stay and a photo shoot. In a recent column article by Ricky Lo for The Philippine Star, he shared that he reached out to Pia for comment regarding her new “romance.” The third Filipino Miss Universe recently made headlines after admitting on a Hollywood entertainment show that is already “dating.” The admission came right on the heels of Russian doctor Mikhail “Mike” Varshavski, who is touted as the “Sexiest Doctor Alive,” that he and Pia are dating. “Sorry but I’m here in the Philippines for an endorsement shoot and been very busy doing that. I was also advised by Miss Universe (Organization) not to do any interviews while I’m here without their permis-
sion. I’m so sorry but I’m just following them. I don’t want to be a pasaway Miss Universe,” she told Lo. But Pia, during an interview at the pre-judging of this year’s Binibining Pilipinas pageant, did not deny that her “happiness level” is really high these days. She also confessed that the practicing doctor plays a huge part in making her achieve 10 out of 10 happiness.
Maine Mendoza recounts 6-day “tampo” with Alden Richards
I
n a recent entry on her website, breakthrough artist Maine Mendoza admitted that she was disappointed when her Kalyeserye love team partner Alden Richards declined an invitation to her birthday celebration in the island of Boracay this March. Extremely excited at the chance of being given a few days off for her special day, and this being her first visit to the popular vacation spot, Maine recalls that she had invited him two weeks before the scheduled trip and would ask him every day since then if he could make it. The Pambansang Bae told her he would try his best to join her celebration, but two days before her birthday, and five days before the departure for Boracay, he sent her a text message explaining that he would not be able to forgo an earlier commitment.
Calling herself “matampuhin,” she expressed her disappointment that he would not be there to celebrate her birthday. Making her even more annoyed were clues being given by Alden, their co-workers and friends that the actor might just have a surprise up his sleeve. Maine explained that she tried her best not to get her hopes up so she wouldn’t end up disappointed. True enough, on Day 1 of her 3-day celebration, Alden surprised her by appearing at her hotel door in the morning, having rented a private plane just to get to the island. “It took me 10 minutes to grasp the actuality that he was there,” wrote Maine, surprised and excited at the arrival of Alden. Despite only being able to stay for a day, Alden made sure that it was a day well-spent as he and Maine tried out every activity available on the island. They took a speedboat to hop around the many beaches, went scuba diving, parasailing and even rode on jet skis and banana boats. \ As the time came for Alden to leave, Maine felt sad but said she was still happy that they got to spend time together. “We were really having a whale of a time and then the next thing, he already has to leave. Lungkot lang [It was sad] but c’est la vie, at least we get to spend time and have fun on our own. (It was the first time!),” she said. “The important thing is we had a great time together– REALLY great time.” ARTISTA WINNIPEG April 2016 ISSUE

More exciting ‘Encantadia’ retelling in the works
F
our Kapuso actresses have emerged successful in the rigorous auditions for GMA Network’s retelling of the hit fantasy series Encantadia this 2016. In a much-awaited grand announcement on 24 Oras last April 4, the highly-coveted roles of the four sisters, who are called Sang’gres or guardians of the elemental gems, went to GMA Artist Center stars Kylie Padilla, Gabbi Garcia, Sanya Lopez and Glaiza de Castro. Versatile star Kylie Padilla will portray the role of Amihan, the keeper of the Jewel of Air. Alena, the keeper of the Jewel of Water, will be portrayed by talented young actress Gabbi Garcia. Newcomer Sanya Lopez
will play the role of Danaya, the keeper of the Jewel of Earth. And multi-talented actress Glaiza de Castro will breathe life to Pirena, the eldest among the Sang’gres and the keeper of the Jewel of Fire. The highly-acclaimed series first aired on GMA Network in 2005 and was deemed the grandest television production at that time. The story is set in the enchanted realm of Encantadia, which is divided into four kingdoms – Adamya, Sapiro, Lireo, and Hathoria. Each kingdom holds one of the four precious elemental stones that are integral to maintaining peace and order in the land. Encanta-
dia 2016, which will soon air on GMA Pinoy TV, is helmed by Director Mark Reyes, who also led the production of the series’ first run. Reyes dubs the new series as a ‘requel’ which will offer something new and revitalize the familiar story that is well-loved by Kapuso audiences across the globe to make it appealing to a new audience of millenials. During the story conference for Encantadia 2016, he reminded his new cast that this will not be like any regular show. “Encantadia is very different. You have to live the whole project. You have to live your characters,” he said. He encouraged the four new lead actresses to bond and help each other out as he recalled how the relationship
among the original lead cast members contributed to the success of the series. With excitement building for Encantadia 2016, Reyes promises viewers a better show. “We will do our best to make this even better than the first one. That’s all we can promise. Pinaghirapan po namin ‘to [We worked very hard on this]. Nakita niyo [You’ve seen] how special this is… so expect bigger and more exciting things about Encantadia,” he shared.

Luis Manzano reacts to gay rumors being related to his break up with Angel Locsin by: Rhea Manila Santos
W
ith the debut of his newest game show Family Feud, Luis Manzano admitted it has been a different hosting experience for him so far. “It’s a little bit more overwhelming. Every show is overwhelming pero for a show na fan ka. Kasi yung sa states pinapanuod ko yung kay Steve Harvey kaya kahit ako na-e-entertain. Kaya nung sinabi nila sa akin na they’re considering me to do Family Feud sobrang natuwa na ako. Kung ano yung binibigay ko sa ibang mga game shows mas dadagdagan ko,” he shared during the show’s grand presscon held last April 4 inside ABS-CBN. As his third game show assignment in the Kapamilya network, Luis considers it a big blessing.”Hindi naman ako iko-consider ng ABS-CBN kung wala silang nakikitang kulit na puwede kong iambag sa show. Sabi ko nga, for any other game show na ginawa ko it’s competitive. ForFamily Feud every answer is unique. Bawat sagot puwedeng paglaruan. Siguro it’s a result of working hard. It’s amatter of me giving 110% in every show that I do so siguro it translates into more jobs and more
shows,” he remarked. After admitting that he and Angel Locsin have decided to just stay friends, Luis revealed he still has to deal with other issues questioning his gender on a regular basis. Which is why the 34-year old has just learned to laugh off the gay rumors. It is not a derogatory term. Kung bakla ka then go ahead, there’s nothing wrong with being gay. Ginagamit siya with a negative connotation so para sa akin mali yun,” he explained. The Family Feud host even defended his ex-girlfriend, who has been rumored to be a lesbian as well. “It’s part of the industry. Anything from name-calling to bashing. Itong industriya ang nagpapatunay na hindi totoo yung “Where there’s smoke there’s fire.” May balita nga ako may nabuntis akong beauty queen. Sabi ko, ‘Paano nanagyari yun?’ So if people only understood this industry more than
what they see on TV, they’d be completely surprised,” he said. However, Luis said he does not want to drag Angel’s name into his issues even though she also defended him in her interviews. “I’m very thankful din naman. Pero it’s nakakahiya kasi nagagamit siya for the promo. At this point, we’re friends. I don’t want to add color. Basta magkaibigan kami. Sa lahat ng pinagdaanan namin magkaibigan kami,” he added. Luis said he looks up to his mom in terms of staying strong despite all the controversies being hurled at her throughout her showbiz and political career. “Si mommy
din naman alam niya yung pinagdaanan. Kahit siya din ang dami niyang pinagdaanan. Hindi naman sa tinawag siya na bakla (laughs). Pero I’m sure my mom had her fair share of haters. The Philippines’ premier TV host also did not want to talk about when he is ready to start dating again. Luis clarified that even though he may not seem affected, it does not mean he is not heartbroken. “Well siguro darating lang din naman yan. Kasi medyo matagal tagal naman yung kuwento pero things happen for a reason din. Sabi ko at the end of the day pinakamaganda is magkaibigan kami. Kailangan ba umiiyak ako? Kailangan mag-wa-walling ako pataas? Ano ba ang requirement para maapektuhan di ba? kailangan ba nakikita niyo sa ASAP na hindi ako makasalita, yung sa sobrang lungkot ka pataas na yung luha ko? Yung naghahanap ng mali makakahanap ng mali. People looking for good will always find good. People looking for negativity will always find negativity. Maglagay ako ng isang magandang bagay dito pero ang taong naghahanap ng mali makakahanap ng mali no matter what.”

Heart Evangelista, ready to reconcile with Marian Rivera?
H
eart Evangelista might have hinted at a possible reconciliation with Marian Rivera with whom she had a feud way back in 2011 while they were filming scenes for the remake of the movie Temptation Island. At a recent pocket interview for her upcoming soap on GMA, Juan Happy Love Story, Heart confirmed that she’s ready to mend ties with people she had previous misunderstandings with. “Yeah, naman! Kailangan lahat happy, happy ‘no? Ang hirap ng buhay, dapat happy na lang. You’ll never know when time’s up, di ba? [Yes, of course. Life is difficult as it is so it’s better to just be happy. You’ll never know when time’s up, right?],” she revealed. As for doing a movie project, KC said, “I don’t want to talk about something that’s not confirmed yet but of course we’re talking about doing these things this year.” KC was last seen on the big screen as part of Boy Golden: Shoot to Kill in 2013.
Aside from that, KC would also be hosting the upcoming 2016 Binibining Pilipinas pageant night with Xian Lim on April 17 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. “So ma-me-meet ko si Pia Wurtzbach,” she blurted. Brilante Mendoza supports call for healthier work hours for the film industry
W
by: Rhea Manila Santos
ith the unexpected deaths of directors Wenn Deramas and Francis Pasion earlier this year, showbiz has been divided with its view on improving the working schedules in the film industry. Sinag Maynila film festival director Brillante Mendoza said this awareness is a step towards the right direction. “Sa totoo lang kasi admittedly nangyayari yan but not in my films. Nangyayari yang ganyang more than the eight hours lalo na sa mga independent kasi they have to maximize their budget. That’s why they have to finish everything in like a few days. But at the end of the day we are creating an art. “We are making films but we don’t want the artists or the people to suffer while creating this kind of art. So sana,
personally I’m not really into that kind of working practice so now that everybody is talking about it, nagkaroon ng awareness na as much as possible huwag ng i-practice. Of course we cannot really eliminate that. But at least pinag-uusapan siya and I think that’s the most important thing,” he shared during the Sinag Maynila filmfest media launch held last April 5 at the SM Aura Skypark in Taguig City. With the Sinag Maynila
filmfest on its second year, Brillante hopes to inspire more aspiring directors to produce quality films. Out of more than 100 entires, they chose five feature films to showcase this year. “It’s a good time for different filmmakers. In the future they could also submit their projects here and make it into a reality. For as long as siguro yung script niya is relevant I think dito sa Sinag Maynila we give importance to the story more than the usual formula na kailangan merong sikat na artista. We give way to the story and of course to the film as a whole, They’re exciting, diverse and then at the same time still socially relevant. This year nagkaroon din ng short films section and then the Cinephone category which is sponsored by Samsung,” he explained. Brillante said he and festival co-founder and CEO Wilson Tieng are very satisfied with the results of last year’s participants. “Last year we didn’t expect because I think we only had like two months to prepare. But it was really very special especially dun sa mga films. They went to at least 36 international film festivals na nanalo ng mga awards and then we had our special screenPls. turn to page 28.

John Lloyd Cruz on Angelica Panganiban: ‘Hindi ko naman siya iniiwasan’ by: Kristhoff Cagape
J
ohn Lloyd Cruz revealed that he crossed paths with Angelica Panganiban in Hong Kong. This was after netizens took notice on social media that both of them were in Hong Kong at the same time. “If you are asking kung nagkita kami ni Angelica sa Hong Kong, nagkita kami, yeah. Napakaliit ng Hong Kong at hindi ko naman siya iniiwasan, di niya naman ako iniiwasan so I don’t think siguro nabibigyan lang ng parang kahulu-
ways try to be as honest as possible kasi after all napakaliit ng mundo natin di ba? Kahit sabihin mo pumunta ka ng Hong Kong, kahit Zimbabwe pa, merong makakakita at makakakita sa’yo and I don’t think I want to live my life that way na nagtatago ako, na meron akong gustong ilihim because I am a very practical guy. What you see is what you get parang kung meron akong mahal, I’m not gonna go shouting it to the whole world pero hindi rin po ako mag-
Nagkita-kita kami ni kuya Aga, ate Charlene at Ruffa sa isang gallery,” he said in an interview on the set of Just the 3 of Us. The actor stressed that they are actually friends. “Wala naman po tayong iniiwasan sa buhay ko.Life is too short para meron ka pang gustong iwasan na tao di ba? Especially pag may pinagsamahan ka’yo di ba? Wouldn’t you want na magkaroon kayo ng time to catch up?” he added. The press also asked John Lloyd about the real reason behind their split but the actor remarked that he doesn’t want to go into details anymore. “Sana kaya naming sagutin ‘yung gustong malaman ng iba pero you know eh kasi parang it’s almost impossible kasi it’s too personal andminsan kahit na naiintindihan naman namin how public our lives are pero parang ‘yung ma-protektahan ‘yung natitirang kaunti sa amin, nahihirapan po kami to go into details pero we always try our best na ibigay sa public namin at sa inyo ‘yung kaya namin, ‘yung maibabahagi lang namin.” He further stressed, “And we al-
tatago.” John Lloyd is set to star in a new movie titled Just the 3 of Us with Jennylyn Mercado. He said that he could somehow relate to the story of his character in the movie. “Maganda din ang timing ng journey na ‘to kasi I don’t think na magagawa ko ‘tong pelikula kung ibibigay mo sa akin five years ago or seven years ago so the timing maganda. And I love the fact na ngayon ko siya ginagawa because somehow yes nakaka-relate ako sa pinagdadaanan ng character kasi as you all know I am not getting any younger. I’m 32 turning 33 this year so isa sa pinagdadaanan ko personally, ganon pala ‘yun eh, pagnalalapit ka sa ganong edad, ‘yung mga issues na tina-tackle dito hindi nalalayo sa personal na buhay. I think it’s gonna be a great journey kahit sobrang challenging. It’s very familiar,” he stated. ARTISTA WINNIPEG April 2016 ISSUE

ings outside Metro Manila sa mga key cities like Cebu, Isabela, and Pampanga so it was really very successful. I hope this year itong second edition maging kasing successful siya nung first edition.,” he added. Meanwhile, Head of the Sinag Maynila jury this year is Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis director Lav Diaz, whom Brillante admitted is his next movie to watch. “Wala pa kasi, I’m having my film workshop for the past week and then there’s Sinag Maynila and then we have our culminating activity the week after

this kaya sobrang hectic. And I was away out of the country. Si Lav Diaz wala din siya dito nasa New York siya ako nasa Las Vegas ako nung Holy Week so I didn’t have the time to watch it yet,” he said. To those who still haven’t watched the eight hour film, Brillante encouraged more Pinoys to catch Hele. “Siguro kailangan i-prepare mo muna yung sarili mo na alam mong manunuod ka ng eight hour film. Do not expect na pagpunta mo dun ang papanuorin ay yung the usual film na pinapanuod
mo. The mere fact that it’s an eight hour film, it’s a different kind of experience because it’s a different kind of film. So siguro for us mga Filipinos siguro this is something new to us. Wala pa nga tayong core audience for alternative or for independent so this is what we are trying to create now. And the Lav Diaz film Hele actually is a good experience for us.Maganda siyang introduction sa alternative cinema.” The 2nd Sinag Maynila Film Festival will run from April 21 to 26, 2016. A
ctor Jake Cuenca took to Instagram to assure his ex-girlfriend Sara Grace Kelley that he’ll always support her even after their breakup. In Jake’s previous interviews, he was vocal that they remain friends despite the split. The actor is currently in the US and posted his photo with Sara yesterday. He also thanked her in his caption. “This goes out to my favorite person in the world @saragracekelly. Thank you so much for spending time with me here in the city. The circumstances have changed but you are still the only person who can make me smile the way that you do, the only person I know who can make my heart skip a beat. We might not be together anymore but our friendship will last forever. I will always love you unconditionally. There will always be a special place for you in my heart. Because you for me? You are the most amazing person I have ever met beautiful inside and out. I
will always be here to support you and your dreams and I would still drop everything just to be with you when you need me. I don’t know when or where I’ll see you again the uncertainty scares me. But one thing for sure is that this isn’t goodbye it’s see you later,” he wrote.
