REFLECTIONS By Dr. Jun Vencer

ARE WE GOD’S SALT IN OUR COMMUNITY?

ome years ago, a survey was done in a City in Southern Brazil regarding the impact of Christianity in the City. One of the questions was this: What difference would it make if churches are closed in the City? There were three basic answers: The majority said: No difference. Many said: A quieter city. A minority said: Some difference. A similar survey was asked by a national pollster in the USA. The main question was: What would your city be like without the church? We can give different answers. It is even possible that we do not know how or what to answer. Someone wrote back: A city without a church would be like life without salt. Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth ….” The Greeks called salt the “second soul of the meat.” Soldiers were often paid in salt. The word salary came from the word salt. We often say, “You’re not worth your salt.” So, when Jesus said this, He meant that Christians, as salt of the earth, are most valuable to society. In today’s language, it is like “you are worth your weight in gold in society.” In practical terms: 1) Salt gives flavor. Without salt, food tastes bland. 2) Salt melts ice. Comes winter, the government uses salt to de-ice snowed roads. 3) Salt induces thirst. When you buy popcorn in a movie house, it has salt so that you buy drinks also. 4) Salt heals. When I have a sore throat, my wife tells me to

ueen of Soul Jaya admitted that there is a part of her that still misses her mother, the late comedienne Elizabeth Ramsey. “Yeah I really miss her because now is really the time when I wanted her to be with me. Marami kaming puwedeng gawin sa pagbabago ko ngayon,” she said during a recent pocket press conference. Despite that, Jaya is certain that her mother would have supported her decision to transfer to ABS-CBN. “So talagang feeling ko nagtutumalon ‘yun sa itaas dahil ‘yung mga kinulit niya sa akin noon parang ngayon lang nangyayari for me,” she said. Turns out that it was the older Ramsey who has long been pushing her to make the big jump. “Si Mama talaga ‘yung dati, dati,

dati pa na makulit na ‘Dai kelan ka mag ABS, dai?’ [Tapos sasabihin ko] ‘Eh hindi nga puwedeng mag-ABS kasi GMA nga di ba?’ So siya ‘yung laging makulit,” she revealed. Her mother even told her of her earlier days as a Kapamilya. “Kasi ang kwento niya, ‘Dai nagsimula ako sa ABS.’ Meron silang show noon eh na comedy. So doon daw talaga siya nagsimula so kailangan daw talaga nandoon na ko,” she shared about her mother’s late ‘50s variety show Student Canteen where she emerged as one of the winners of its singing contests. The “Wala Na Bang Pag-ibig” singer recalled that this conversation happened before her mom got sick. Elizabeth passed away in her sleep just last year. Meanwhile, it may be recalled

gurgle in warm water with salt. 5) Salt preserves. With salt, fish or meat are preserved for long periods of time. Of course we can put many functional applications as to what Christians can be and do in society today to make a difference. The most obvious is that salt to be useful must be in touch with the object it is preserving. To cite Biblical applications: Jesus in order to share the gospel was among the least in society – even reputed to be with the drunkards, the prostitutes, and tax collectors. – without committing sin. In today’s time, it includes reaching out to those in prison, widows, orphans, refugees, the HIV victims and the transgenders. You may argue that Christians or churches are too few in number to make an impact. Well, to change metaphor, have you ever slept inside a room with a few mosquitos in it? But the more serious issue is the warning of Jesus: “But if salt should lost its saltiness, how shall it be restored? It is good for nothing ….” Are we God’s salt in our cities and beyond? The concept of salt is often paired with light. Jesus said, “I am the light of the World.” Then He told His disciples that they are the light of the world. Therefore, they are to let their light to shine in their cities so that the people around them who live in the darkness of their sins may see their good works and glorify God in heaven. Light here is equated with the life and work of the Lord Jesus. It gives hope. It provides guidance. It ensures eternal life with God. The most fundamental of these good works is the sharing of the Gospel of Christ to others and to demonstrate that message with their godliness at home and in the market place. As Mahatma Gandhi once said: My life is my message. Amen. Dr.Agustin (Jun) Vencer, Jr. (LLB, DD, DLitt, PHD Applied Theology) is the President of Global Transformational Ministries and Pastor of the Alliance International Church of Pearland in Texas, USA. He is married to Annabella Castillo Vencer. They have four children and six grandchildren. His biography is Poor Is No Excuse, written by John Allan and originally published by Pater Noster in England. Jaya made her being a Kapamilya official after appearing on It’s Showtime almost three weeks ago. Now, she’s part of the show’s Tawag ng Tanghalan segment as a member of the panel of judges. Jaya said that as of the moment, she is only set to appear on the noontime show. But how about appearing on the Sunday variety show ASAP? “To join ASAP soon? We’re waiting for them. Parang may niluluto sila eh,” she said. Jaya stressed that she is in no rush to appear on the Sunday show since “We’re going to have many, many days with ABS.” “I think we’re just waiting for them to present kung ano ang gagawin namin talaga. And from there, we’ll let everybody know. Nagpo-post naman ako lagi,” she ended. While she was noncommittal about appearing on ASAP,

Jaya unabashedly confessed that she hopes to be able to do a Maalaala Mo Kaya episode now that she is in the Kapamilya network.

Aiza Seguerra is the newly appointed National Youth Commission undersecretary

National Youth Commission Assistant Secretary Earl Saavedra announced the appointment by the President of Aiza Seguerra as undersecretary and head of the Commission Friday, August 12, during its celebration of International Youth Day. During the campaign period earlier this year, Aiza and wife Liza Diño were vocal supporters of President Rodrigo Duterte. In a recent interview with PUSH, Liza said she and Aiza are not seeking any high ranking position. “Kumbaga, when we supported the president it was because we believed

in him, that’s it. In terms of position, I don’t think right now na yon ang… it woud be unfair for people to say na parang kailangang suklian yung pagkampanya sa kanya,” the actress stated. Liza also said they would rather get the President’s support on their advocacies like LGBT rights and Lumads. “So, siguro kung mero kaming gusto, like kung ako, I want to be part of the LGBT advocacies, si Aiza more on the Lumads. Kung bibigyan kami ng opportunity na maging head ng something, siguro yun yon. Siguro, yung matataas na posisyon parang… hindi talaga, eh,” she emphasized.

fter being announced as the lead stars of the upcoming stage production of Annie, child actresses Krystal Brimner and Isabeli Elizalde admit they are currently enjoying rehearsals which started with a workshop last May. Krystal was last seen in the MMFF film Honor Thy Father where she played John Lloyd Cruz’s daughter, while Isabeli Elizalde is the daughter of former model Bianca Araneta-Elizalde and is acting on stage for the very first time. “It’s been really fun because the director Michael Williams, he makes us

But I have to miss my first day of school because I have my press con tomorrow,” she explained. The two revealed that they both idolize Lea Salonga when it comes to performing and also because the actress played the role of Annie in one of the earlier versions of the play. They admitted that if The Voice Kids coach will come and watch their performance it would be such an honor for them. “My favorite

scene is it’s a ‘Hard Knock Life’ because it’s fun, we get to dance, we run around,” Krystal added. As a newcomer, Isabeli admitted that playing the lead is a big responsibility. “The most challenging part is maybe learning our lines? It’s very big lines because we’re like in 95% of the show. So we have to memorize every line. Sometimes we get tired. It depends if we’re doing choreography but if we’re just singing it’s not really tiring because we’re just sitting down (laughs). It has less to do with her physique (which, by the way, is nothing to sneeze at) and more to do with how she carries herself. She could gain 20 pounds right now and my opinion of her wouldn’t change,” ani Lea. “Sexy has nothing to do with the outer shell and all to do with what’s in you. You could be a Victoria’s Secret model and have zero sex appeal, or be someone customarily plus-sized and get everyone in the room to set their gaze upon you. Or your opinion could differ from mine and not be any less valid. It’s in the eye of the beholder,” dagdag pa niya.
