BEA ALONZO:
The Heart That Lasts by: Sheng Cruz
T
hat moment when people around you tell you that you can’t make it in life, simply because you were born to the kind of mother you have. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back during the seemingly saddest hours of Bea Alonzo’s fast-phased childhood in a broken family where circumstances that surrounded it made her feel constantly rejected. The unforgiving statement pushed her to do everything in her power to show her antagonists what she’s really made of. Though admittedly she didn’t have the best experiences as a kid, she fondly recalls the parts when she would showcase her innate acting prowess in front of a mirror shedding tears while uttering Judy Anne Santos’ line from her movies. Beside faith in her acting skill, Bea also beams with pride reliving the memories of her singing on every family reunion as a professional singer in the making. While her family pushed her to a modeling career path, Bea knew from the beginning that she was gonna be a television star in an era where everytime the clock hit 4:30pm, people were religiously glued to their TV sets to watch “Ang TV” starring famous celebrities such as Claudine Barreto and Jolina Magdangal among others. Bea thought what they were doing on TV were easy and so she can be one of them too. At night, she would dream she was partying with all of the show’s most popular casts. “Naginip ako na kasama ko sila sa street party kasi bago ako matulog lagi ko iniisip na madali lang yung ginagawa nila, na kaya ko rin umarte (I used to dream that we were in a street party because everynight before bed, I would think about how easy their job was and that I can actually act), she exclaimed. True enough and not too long after, Bea carved her niche in the industry when she got the chance to play a supposedly small role in the 2002 TV series Kaytagal Kang Hinintay where her talent paved a way to her phenomal love team with equally talented actor John Lloyd Cruz. “Tisay”, as her close friends used to call her, was discovered in a local beauty contest before she was tapped by ABS-CBN to joinStar Circle Batch 10. She painstakingly completed series of workshops and went to countless auditions like every newbie does. “Masipag ako talaga e (I am really hardworking) “, she quips. With her potential to be a great actress at her young age as seen by the right people in the industry, Bea did successful TV series and blockbuster movies one after the

other. She tasted the fruits of her labor being hailed 2013 “Box Office Queen” for her phenomenal movie One More Chance with John Lloyd Cruz and being nominated “Best Actress” in 2014 FAMAS Awards. Her most recent TV project in ABS- CBN, “A Love To Last”, co-starring Ian Veneracion and Iza Calzado keeps her love for her craft burning these days. Bea takes pride in inspiring young people who, just like her were born and raised in unfortunate circumstances. She has always wanted to show them that nobody can stop them in getting what they madly want in life. “Gusto kong isipin nila na kung nakaya ni ate Bea, kaya ko rin (I want them to think that if Ate Bea can, I can also do it), she adds. Asked where the thought of being rejected all her life came from, Bea shares: “Nung bata pa ako palipat-lipat nga lang ako ng bahay, nakikitira sa mga kamaganak. Minsan nakatayo lang ako sa labas ng pinto ng bahay nila naka-lock, iiyak na lang ako ( When I was young I used to frequently move houses since I’ve always needed to stay with relatives. There were times when doors were shut and I just stood outside crying). So what made Bea’s wounded heart last? Bea answered this question with another tender yet tough question: “Do I always have to fight for people to love me”? , she asked nonchalantly. And the answer, she said was one she got by steadfast prayer--- a divine NO. (credits to Bea’s interview with Boy Abunda)

orld Day of Prayer 2017 written by the World Day of Prayer Committee of The Philippines. Before the World Wide Web, there was the World Day of Prayer, an international event that has been connecting people in a meaningful way for almost a century. Despite being planned years in advance, World Dayof Prayer services have a remarkable record for anticipating major events, like the refugee crisis (France 2013), the Arab Spring (Egypt 2014) and the winding down of the U.S. embargo against Cuba (Cuba 2016). The secret to this depth and insight is the women who plan and write each World Day of Prayer service. Too often, women have the most intimate experiences of armed conflict, violence, social injustice, and human rights violations. What might Canadians learn from women of the Philippines, a country on the front lines of climate change, foreign mining and resources interests, a regional insurgency and social upheaval due to migration, who wrote the World Day of Prayer 2017? How will we answer the question, “Am I being unfair to you?” On March 3, 2017, Christians in more than 170 countries and in 2,000 communities across Canada will gather to learn about, pray, and celebrate in solidarity with the women of The Philippines through the

REFLECTIONS By Dr. Jun Vencer
NO VACATION ALLOWED
R
ecently, I gave the Thanksgiving Prayer during the Renewal of Vows of Bro. Oscar and Sis. Enie Ruiz. In our Age of Disposables when five to ten years would be the average length of marriage before divorce, fifty-years is a miracle of grace! During the reception of the Ruiz couple, they hugged, they danced, they laughed. They were saying that romance is not just for the young. Bro. Oscar even carried Sis. Enie to the dance floor. At our table, one Pastor looked at his wife and said, “If I have to do that, you better be as slim as she is?” But a wife who was not so light told her husband who was not so heavy said, “Don’t worry, I will carry you.” The invitation said, “Renewal of Vows.” This can be confusing. The marriage contract did not expire. So what is there to renew? It was not a renewal of their marriage but of their vows to have and to hold till death do they part. To the couple, the event was a reaffirmation of making what was past ever-present. It was a public thanksgiving to God for preserving their marriage, their testimony to the faithfulness of God and their way of re-telling their love story. It was their witness to the parched and dying love life of others that God can rekindle the flame of love if they will not

give up on each other. Of course, they had their own rainy days. But they refuse divorce to solve difficulties because they believe that marriage is a gift from God to enjoy, because of their love for and promise to each other and because they have faith that God will keep His promises to keep and bless them. God said “… the fire must be kept burning at the altar … it must not go out”(Lev. 6:9,13). The specific reference is to a burnt offering wherein the sacrificial animal is burned completely. It is a consecration offering of total selfsurrender to God. The love relationship between God and His people as symbolized by the “fire” is also to be reflected in the love-relationship of husband and wife. To keep the altar fire burning, it must be tended to daily – the ashes removed, the altar cleaned, and the fuel replenished. And so if the fire of marriage is to continue burning the husband and wife must not neglect their duties to each other. Marriage is hard work and vacation is not allowed. The couple must will and creatively work out their differences together. It is an act of justice, of faith, and of love. It is their accountability to God – the Author-Witness to their marriage. Ann and I celebrated 42 years of marriage in December. When we left the Lagoon that night at the Ruiz reception, we looked up to the Los Angeles night sky, littered with glittering stars. We held hands and quietly said, “we have all the years ahead of us.” Thank you Lord.
