REFLECTIONS By Dr. Jun Vencer

REFLECTIONS ON MARRIAGE Part 2 :THE TRIAD OF MARITAL HAPPINESS

S

omeone said that America is at the verge of a post marriage culture. Marriage as an institution is under attack by easy divorces, increasing cohabitations, and rising unwed mothers. People are marrying less. Even those who hope to marry are faced with a debilitating fear that marriage no longer works. Our disposable culture offers free love which is just another way of saying free sex, a promiscuity without commitment or responsibility. Marriage is viewed as a private affair between consenting male and female without regards for children or society. God’s gift of sexuality is made subservient to irresponsible human choice and gratification. Free love, however, is a contradiction in terms because when lovers are in love, they don’t want to be free. They want to be bound for a lifetime. Moreover, love is qualified by the holiness of God while lust is without transcendent standard. No marriage is perfect. In fact, even if marriage is made in heaven, so are thunders and lightnings. Marriage is made up of two imperfect and self-willed people, whose DNAs are uniquely different from each other. Factor into the marriage equation the fact that both man and woman are sinners (Rom. 3:23) and generally selfish (Ps. 14:3). It is a foregone conclusion that conflicts are inevitable. Yet marriage is the comfort of our loneliness and the hope of our completion. A 16th Century writer called marriage a noble daring. It involves risks. Rosemary Haughton wrote, “marriage is handing over your whole self – your body, your soul, your happiness, your future – in the keeping of one whom you love, but who is, and remains, greatly a stranger…. The greatest of human gifts are set to work only when people are prepared to risk everything.” In the language of the marriage vow – for better or for worst … in sickness and in health – the couple are to love and cherish, to respect and to honor each other till death do they part. A husband said of a sickly wife, “I would rather carry her on my back the rest of my life than to live one day without her.” For marriage and love to thrive, not just survive, three things are needed. Firstly, SELF-CHANGE. By nature, we are self-centered. Our needs become the references when we think, feel and behave. When we get married, we desire our perpetual happiness which is a questionable biblical concept. In God scale of values, He desires our holiness more than our happiness. When we get married, we instinctually act to shape our spouse after our own image not God’s. Harvel Hendrix and Helen Hunt calls this “symbiosis.” We entertain symbiotic fantasies that our spouse will “learn to like the things we like, start to think the way we do, and generally be in sync with our way of living.” But this sameness, in reality, is a myth. It is futile to change our spouse on our own. We have no control of our spouse. But we have control of ourselves to become a better husband or wife. The Biblical model is that we love God because He first loved us (1 Jn. 4:19). Initiate self-change to inspire change in our spouse. To love is to will to love. Not all our sermons to our spouse will change our spouse. Ultimately, only God in Jesus can change a person inside-out. But what is important in this process of self-change, is that the result-desired of change is God’s highest purpose for our spouse. I came across lyric or a poem that speaks directly to this reflection from the heart of a wife. Now I know that I couldn’t really change Until I found someone who would love me, Whether I change or not. Then one day he said to me, “Don’t change, stay as you are. It really doesn’t matter whether you change of not. I love you as you are. Love can truly change. We change to become the partner God wants us to be for our spouse, vice versa, to achieve marital bliss in His presence. Mahatma Gandhi once wrote: “My life is my message.” Who can argue against a changed life? Secondly, DUTIES FIRST. Spouses make their happiness depend on conditional clauses which are being read into the Pauline teachings on husband and wife relationships (Ephesians 5:22,25,33). The husband will say, “I will love you if you submit to me.” The wife in turn says, “I will submit if you love me.” In this mentality, the relationship plunges in a downward spiral. The love-respect capital of the spouses respectively diminishes to-

wards marital misery. Dr. Emerson Eggerichs calls this the “Crazy Cycle”, i.e, when the husband loves less, the wife reacts with less respect, and he reacts with less love. We insist on our rights before we perform our duties. Such an understanding of the text is not an exegesis (objective meaning of the text) but an eisegesis (a subjective interpretation). There is no if in the commands. The duty of the husband to love his wife and of the wife to respect here husband are unconditional as unto the Lord. Jesus provides us with an example: He came to serve and not to be served (Mk. 10:45). Barbara de Angelis wrote: “Marriage is not a noun, it’s a verb. It isn’t something you get. It is something you do.” And thirdly, TRUST GOD. Marriage requires faith in God who is the Author of love and marriage. Christian marriage is a covenant not just a contract between man, woman, and God. This triune structure of covenantal marriage has biblical support. God says “… two can defend themselves, a cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Eccl. 4:12). Also, God is a witness in Christian marriage and covenant-making at the altar (Mal. 2:10). He is the Godfather or Ninong of the Christian couple. He watches over them in readiness to protect them from all evil and to keep their souls. The Psalmist says that “… he (God) Pls. turn to page 29.

Arnel Pineda denies being kicked out of international band Journey

ver since he joined the internationallyknown American band Journey, Arnel Pineda said he never expected to develop asthma in his adulthood. Arnel is currently a celebrity ambassador for GSK’s Winner Against Asthma campaign along with other celebrities who have asthma like Kim Chiu and ice skater Michael Martinez. They flew me to L.A para makita yung doctors na gumamot din kila Michael Jackson at Michael Bolton. Tapos dun na-discover nila na yung asthma ko galing sa matinding allergies. Pero actually hindi pa talaga ako nagpa-check for

allergies. Basta ang napansin ko basta kapag may mold tapos may mga cigarette smoke tapos yung usok nung sasakyan wala na, talagang nagsisikip na yung dibdib ko at saka yung lalamunan ko,” he shared during the announcement of winners of the GSK Search for the Winners Against Asthma (SWAA) held at the Makati Shangri-la hotel last October 7. The Journey lead vocalist even gave some advice to the youth awardees who also have the Pls. turn to page 6.

So sa mga asthma winners I don’t think you have to be sad na meron kayo niyan kasi these days I can say na it’s okay na kapusin na kasyo ng hininga ngayon kasi marami ng gamot, marami ng paraan. We have doctors [who] are so knowledgeable on how to treat you guys kaya there’s nothing to worry about,” he shared. With plans to tour with his band already set for the next two years all over the world, Arnel says he has no plans to leave the group. “Hindi siguro. Unless mag-disband yung banda. Pero as of now they have no plans of disbanding. Pero any time I’m ready kasi actually nung sinali nila ako, nung ginawa nila akong permanent member nung banda, I didn’t expect na tumagal ako eh. Pero my God after 500 shows with the band I’m still here. They still keep me so it’s such a blessing,” he explained. Another plan the GSK Winner Against Asthma ambassador has been working on is bringing his band back to the Philippines to perform for his kababayans and to put to rest rumors he was already removed from the group. Journey held a concert in the country was in 2009. “I’ve been really working hard about it na sana madala ko pa ang Journey sa Pilipinas kasi I just want everybody to know that I’m alive and kicking with the band kasi maraming chismis na lumalabas na matagal na akong natanggal sa Journey pero hindi nila alam kasi hindi din nababalita. Year after year after year for the past eight years solid na kasama ko ang Journey nag-tu-tour,” he admitted. The 48-year-old international artist shared how he manages the stress of working with a hectic schedule. Siyempre everybody knows I’m a father, a family man din. I’m a husband. So I have to be very careful with my health kasi may mga inaalagaan akong pamilya,” he explained. Arnel said that he will never complain about being too busy. “Bottom line is, to sum it all [up], this is something na hindi mo tini-take for granted kasi napakalaking blessing nito sa pamilya ko tapos at

the same time maraming Pilipino are so proud of kung ano yung nagawa ko with the band. Kasi siyempre kasi kahit kasama ko mga Amerikano kumbaga bandilang Pinoy pa rin yung dala dala ko every time may show kami,” he added. With all the blessings he has received, Arnel said he could not ask for anything more. “Wala na. Except siyempre continuous na great health kasi ito yung mag-su-support sa akin to continue what I aspire more to do katulad nung solo album ko and then more time with my family kasi every time I’m gone away ako for six months. Siyempre pag-uwi ko dito I try to catch up for lost time with them,” he admitted. Arnel said he understands his responsibility as a Filipino who has gained recognition abroad like Lea Salonga and Charice. “I’m so grateful na meron akong naimbag kahit papano sa mga Pilipino. I’d like to think na nakakapagbigay din ako ng malaking inspirasyon lalo na dun sa mga aspiring musicians. Sometimes sila yung na-le-left out, sila yung na-di-discriminate kasi katulad ko hindi naman ako matangkad, hindi din naman ako tisoy. Hindi naman ako yung ka-pogian na parang yung tinitingnan ng Pinoy na maging artista quality or singer quality. So I was able to make it dahil merong naniwala na banyaga sa akin, sa talent ko. So mas kanila ko ino-offer kung ano mang klaseng success I have right now, sa kanila talaga nakadedicate,” he shared.

Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta share advice for young love teams by: Kristhoff Cagape

R

ichard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta’s team-up, popularly known as CharDawn, is set to celebrate its 25th year in 2016. Reflecting on the silver anniversary of their onscreen partnership, Richard attributed the success of their tandem to the beautiful projects they have done together. Dawn said she believes that choosing the right project is the key to their success as a tandem and on how they have stayed this long together in the industry. “Ako kasi I’m just very grateful na hanggang ngayon tinatangkilik pa rin kami ng mga audience, na naaapektuhan pa rin sila sa amin, na gusto pa rin nila kaming makitang working t o g e t h e r, falling in love, fighting, getting back together, ‘yun pa rin

‘yung gusto nilang kind of roller coaster ride pag-nanonood sila ng shows namin o movies namin.” “Kaya kami ni Richard, we make sure na pinipili namin ‘yung materyal, we really want to make sure na kung ano ‘yung gagawin namin, it’s something na kaabang-abang, gusto rin na makita ng viewers namin. We hope each time we never fail them,” Dawn said. With so many popular young love teams today, what is their advice to them to last long in the industry like they have?

Dangwa: Love blooms in the most unexpected places

T

he hashtag #DangwaGirl went viral a few weeks ago as university belt students posted about a mysterious girl giving roses away on the streets of Manila. The lovely flower girl was revealed on GMA’s 24 Oras newscast as Janine Gutierrez – who found a unique way to promote her upcoming series. Janine spent a day giving out red roses to strangers she met along the way, similar to her role in the network’s upcoming series entitled Dangwa. The recipients – particularly the young men – were thrilled and quickly posted their encounters on social media. In the Dangwa series, the lives of various characters are changed by a chance meeting with Rosa (to be played by Janine Gutierrez), an enchantingly beautiful flower vendor in

Manila’s most popular flower market. Each character who buys a flower from Rosa will discover that love unexpectedly blooms in his or her own life. A new love story will be introduced to viewers every Monday and end on a Friday … except for the story of Rosa herself, which will slowly unfold as the season progresses. Rosa’s heartwarming smile and mischievous ways capture the hearts of flower delivery boy Baste (played by Mark Herras) and furniture designer Lorenzo (played by Aljur Abrenica), but there is more to the girl than they ever expected. Discovery the mystery behind Rosa and fall in love every week with the stories to be featured on DANGWA, which airs Monday to Friday starting October 26 only on GMA. Viewers abroad can catch it on GMA’s flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV.

Daniel Padilla teaches Kathryn Bernardo how to handle bashers by: Rhea Manila Santos

A

During Pokwang’s pregnancy she was busy with the primetime series “Nathaniel” and the staff also told her to take a break and check with the doctor to know more about the baby’s condition. “Oo parang ganun, para matuloy kasi masyadong mahina ‘yung kapit. Oo (she was told to rest), kasi sinabi ko sa kanila na parang one week na’kong nag sa-spotting parang ‘di na tama. So siyempre natakot sila sabi, ‘Mamang umuwi ka na muna or pumunta ka sa doctor pa-checkup mo na yan’,” Pokwang elaborated. “Sobrang hina talaga nung heartbeat ng bata and then the next, Saturday wala na. Wala nang heartbeat,” she sadly shared. Meanwhile, Pokie’s daughter Mae sent a touching message for her and Lee, which moved them to tears. “To my Mom, Seeing you happy makes me happy. Alam mo naman po kung ano ang tama para sa sarili mo. Sana siya na talaga ‘yung taong sinasabi mo na gusto mong magpasaya sayo hanggang pagtanda mo. I love you po. “To Lee, Take good care of her, she is all I’ve got. I’m happy for the both of you.”

arning a total of P320 million worldwide, actress Bea Alonzo said that it really means a lot to her that many people saw and appreciated The Love Affair. “Ang pinakaimportanteng natutunan ko siguro (sa movie na ito) ay mahalin mo ‘yung sarili mo na kahit na ikaw lang. ‘Wag kang maghintay na may taong darating na kukumpleto sa’yo. Dapat kumpleto ka bilang ikaw lang. You can only give love to others if you love yourself and if you are whole,” she said, adding that this is her take home lesson from doing the film. After The Love Affair, Bea is back to doing another movie project – the muchawaited sequel of One More Chance, opposite actor John Lloyd Cruz. Did she miss working with him? Confirming that she missed working with him, the actress said that they both matured since they filmed One More Chance in 2007. “Siyempre ibang tao na kami ngayon. Marami na kaming natutunan from the past and what’s exciting is that every time magkatrabaho kami together, laging may sorpresa para sa isa’t isa. “Lagi akong mayroong nakikitang bago sa kanya at sana ganun din siya sa akin

When we trust God in times of trouble, it is not the Beatles lyric “mother Mary comes to me”, but God who will deliver and honor us and with long life will satisfy us (Ps. 91:15-16). This includes full satisfaction of your companionship, His provisions and protection. When spouses do their duties, God in turn causes change in the other spouse to respond in giving their Godgiven rights. And then when we do a project together again, it’s a totally different feel na naman kasi nag-grow na kami as actors, as individuals,” she said. Aware that 2015 brought a lot of blessings for her, Bea shared that she will be doing a teleserye in 2016. “I’m doing a teleserye na next year.

marriage. His lovingkindness never ceases, His compassions never fails, they are new every morning; Great is (His) faithfulness (Lam. 3: 22-23). A wise writer beautifully penned these words like apples of gold in a setting of silver: ”Every moment of your life, you are offered the opportunity to choose love or fear - to tread the earth, or to soar the heavens. Fear would walk you on a narrow path, promising to take you where you want to go. Love says, ‘Open your arms and fly with me.” Life has no rewind button. What is done cannot be undone. But God has a re-set button to restore us to the original specification of the Maker for marriage. Faith in Christ Jesus and receiving Him as Savior and Lord is that re-set button. We become new creatures and behold all things are passed away, all things become new. Amen. ARTISTA WINNIPEG OCTOBER 2015 ISSUE
