‘The Third Party’ earns P10M

M

on opening day

ANILA - “The Third Party,” a gay romantic comedy starring Sam Milby, Angel Locsin, and Zanjoe Marudo, has earned an opening day gross of P10 million, according to producer Star Cinema. It is the seventh film by the ABS-CBN production outfit to reach the box office milestone on its debut following “Achy Breaky Hearts” (P10 million), “Everything About Her (P15 million), “Love Me Tomorrow” (P13 million),” “Just the 3 of Us” (P16 million), and “How To Be Yours” (P10 million). “Barcelona: A Love Untold” (P23 million), which stars the popular onscreen tandem of Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo, had the highest opening day for a Star Cinema film in 2016 so far. Directed by Jason Paul Laxamana, “The Third Party” tells the story of Andi (Locsin), a woman who finds herself in an unusual situation of being a third party to the gay relationship of Christian (Marudo) and Max (Milby). More awkwardness ensues when she starts living with them under one roof after being kicked out of her apartment.

Angel Locsin reveals third party caused past breakup

Angel Locsin admitted that she already had a relationship whose breakup was caused by a third party.

The actress made the statement during the press conference of her film “The Third Party” where her character was replaced by her former boyfriend with another man. “Oo meron [akong relationship na third party ang naging dahilan ng breakup] pero kung kanino man, sa akin na lang iyon,” she briefly said. Locsin was also asked how she would react if in real life, her boyfriend replaces her with another man. “Siyempre masakit ‘yun pero wala naman sa gender ‘yun. ‘Yung fact na napalitan ka, masakit naman talaga. Pero may tinatawag na moving on so ‘yun na lang. Kasi malay mo sila naman ang para sa isa’t isa talaga,” she said. While their movie will tackle a plot that’s not commonly tackled, Locsin is confident the moviegoers are going to like it. “Wala naman kaming ginawang controversial dito. Sa amin lang, nilatag namin ‘yung kwento kung ano ang nakikita natin, kung meron tayong kaibigan na in a relationship na pareho ang gender, parang wala ka namang ire-react sa totoong buhay. Ganun lang din naman,” she said. “Pinapakita lang namin dito kung paano ba magmahal, paano ba ang relationship, paano ba ang samahan, paano ba ang pakikitungo sa kapwa mo,” she added.

REFLECTIONS By Dr. Jun Vencer

ON TITHES AND TAXES

T

he Kingdom of God, says Dr. Karl Barth, has two grace instruments in our world: the State and the Church. This corresponds to the nature of our God as the God of justice and justification (cf. Carl F. Henry). The state, as God’s servant (deacon) is ordained to promote justice – to do good and to punish evil – society (Rom. 13:1-5). The Church is tasked with the proclamation of justification by faith in Christ Jesus.Where there is justice, there is peace, and the preservation of life. Physical life, in turn, is the basic presupposition for the preaching of justification or of the Gospel so that a person can have eternal life. No one preaches to a dead person. The State is to be supported by the citizens with their taxes and duties while the Church is to be supported by the members with their tithes and offerings. These basic relationships are consistent with our Lord’s teaching on giving to Cesar what is due to Caesar and to God what is due to God (Mk. 12:17). Both institutions are Christological and are accountable to God. Generally, citizens have less problem with their relationship to the State. They comply with the laws and pay their taxes and duties. Compliance provides the basic structures of society where the citizens, their rights and properties are protected. The Apostle Paul enjoins all “to be subject to authority as ordained by God …. ” (Rom. 13: 1-5). Of course, the other side of compliance is the fear of sanctions that includes fines, imprisonment, and other prohibitions. Christians on the other hand, have more problems in their relationship with the Church. Because membership is voluntary, members have more freedom to comply or not to comply with Biblical duties. We often engage in exegetical justifications and proof textings that tithes are no longer applicable because they are now

Next to my mom, DJ (Daniel’s nickname) is the person who knows me best. I can just be myself when I’m around him. We just try to enjoy each other every day.” Asked to describe their relationship, Daniel said: “When we encounter problems, we take the extra effort to make things

under grace not under law. We overlook the fact that Abraham gave his tithe over 400 years before the law of Moses. We give grudgingly our tithes and offerings. One Christian claimed that he did not believe in tithing but that he is a generous giver to his church. Of course, giving must be wholehearted, generous, proportionate and cheerful. In fact, following the Macedonian example, it must be sacrificial in that it begins with the giving of self to God (2 Cor. 8:5). The man was asked “when is generous giving generous?” He answered “any giving beyond 10%”.So why 10% as the baseline for generous giving? Others claim that Jesus abolished tithing. There is no direct statement that He did but Jesus did not prohibit tithing. He qualified it saying that it must not be disconnected from justice and love (Lk. 11:4). What Jesus condemned is the legalistic spirit behind tithing (Matt. 23:23). Theologian Elizabeth Achtemeier said, “…our Lord approves of tithing ….” John Stott wrote that “tithing our income is a minimum Christian obligation, and that the church and its mission are bound to suffer when we disobey.” Yet tithing cannot be compelled or be a leverage for more blessings. The challenge is how can Christians under grace exceed the giving of the Pharisees under law. Generous giving is by faith, trusting God that He is faithful in providing for all the needs (not greed) of His people to enjoy an abundant life. Moreover, giving is inseparable from holy living. God is not only interested with His tithe but also with how we spend “our” portion (90%). God still owns our whole income, everything – ourselves, our time, our talent, our treasure, and our thoughts. Giving to God is about multiplication not subtraction of His wholistic goodness. He withholds prosperity because it often results in idolatry. His warning is clear: do not forget the Lord … for it is He who gives the power to make wealth (Deut. 8:11,17). The challenge is to test God with our faith-giving. Jesus commands Christians to seek first the Kingdom of God and all the others will be given to them(Matt. 6:32). Amen.

Coco Martin

Unique Brand Of Pinoy Charm

W

ith a 42% share in ratings, Ang Probinsyano reigns supreme on primetime television—yes because of the compelling story; of course because it’s a remake of a Fernando Poe Jr. classic; but majorly also because it’s a Coco Martin starrer. The award-winning actor may be way low key compared to his contemporaries, but if anything, that just doubles up his charisma. He’s not maporma but his casual porma makes countless girls giddy with kilig—even if he’s just in T-shirt or jeans or in the police uniform when he’s in character as Ador. While this country, with its fascination for things Western, is obsessed with mestizo men, Coco Martin, in all is lalaking Pilipino glory, has the admiration of a large chunk of the female population. We tried analyzing this Coco Martin magic, and while we will never be able to encapsulate his unique brand of appeal and star quality, here are three things we believe makes him the one-of-a-kind Pinoy charmer he is: His signature style is clean, effortless, and relatable. Coco is not your sleek, dapper gentleman—neither is he the ultra casual guy next door, nor the adrenaline junkie jock. He’s a man whose outfits are classic but in step with the times, a man who’ll perfectly complement your efforts to be fasyon

that only end up as laidback ensembles; he won’t be more good-looking than you but he looks good enough to make you look better once you’re together, what with his effervescent demeanor. He’s not into trends. Yes, his signature style is befitting of the times but it’s also never too much—he doesn’t do trends hence he won’t look like everyone else. His unique charm stays intact and unaffected, showcased by how comfortable he is in his own skin… comfortable enough to not rely on clothes alone to make him look good, much less to define him. It’s his personality that carries whatever look he has on. He’s got that gangsta thing going on but his cute dimples betray him. How can you not swoon over Coco when he smiles? He doesn’t even have to fix his hair—he just has to smile. Even if he tries wearing the same shirt over and over, you probably won’t even notice because you’re too focused on his childlike exuberance. What is it about Coco’s style that you love?

Kris Aquino explains recent ‘date’ with Herbert Bautista

A

fter months of not speaking to each other, Kris Aquino shared in her latest public appearance that she and Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista met a couple of weeks ago. According to her, it was the actorturned-politician who asked to have lunch with her. “Napagusapan namin lahat ng kapalpakan, pagkakamali and all,” said Kris in a recent interview with the press. According to Kris they were able to come up with certain realizations after that meeting. “And the one thing that came out of that lunch is that we both realized that if you want a relationship—I’m not talking about him kasi nasa friendzone na kami —pero kung gusto mo talaga na magka-chance, you keep it to yourself, lalo na when you’re public,” she said. She described the experience as: “It was very healing for both of us.” Kris shared that Herbert invited her for lunch after learning about “problems” in her career, which she refused to talk in detail. “He knew what I’ve been going through professionally. And I think there’s enough there of a history na alam niya how much this has affected me. So sabi niya, ‘Kailangan mo ba na makikinig?’” she shared. The Queen of All Media bid the Kapamilya network adieu a few months ago and is currently set to work with APT Entertainment. Kris added that Herbert asked her out to lunch after finding

Although they have parted ways, the two remained civil to each other. In fact, Herbert and Kris were even supposed to star together in the Metro Manila film Festival movie All You Need is Pag-ibig but the former left the project and was replaced by Derek Ramsay.

Boy on parting ways with Kris:

It’s Nothing New

I

by: Gerry Plaza

t might take a very long time before we see Boy Abunda and Kris Aquino on TV together, after close to 16 years being close to inseparable on-air. But for Boy, whose successful patented Fast Talk-style talk show Tonight With Boy Abunda is celebrating its first year anniversary, said such goodbyes are nothing new, and that their friendship off-cam will always remain. “We are always together. As a matter of fact, 30 minutes from now I’ll be with her. So the conversation off cam continues,” Boy tells PUSH in an exclusive interview. There have been times they went on separate ways professionally after their programs were cancelled or reformatted. However, this is the first time in nearly two decades that one of them would depart to join a new network. According to Boy, there were no ill feelings or hurt despite talk that he had been out of the loop in Kris’ conversations with her now co-manager Tony P. Tuviera, president and CEO of TAPE, Inc., producer of Eat Bulaga!. Kris had agreed to terms with TAPE for a show to air on GMA-7.

P 24

“This is nothing new. This is not a strange concept to us. We’ve had our goodbyes in the past but not as friends. I still do her contracts. We are still in constant communication with each other,” Boy said. Boy noted how he and Kris enjoyed their ride together as co-hosts through the years, particularly their last project on ABS-CBN, Aquino and Abunda Tonight. “It was very nice, it was very exciting. We can read each other’s aura,” Boy said. Even the concept of Tonight With Boy Abunda, he said, was something he shared collaboratively with Kris. “Even before we did Aquino and Abunda Tonight, it was our plan to do a ‘15 Minutes with Boy Abunda.’ So she knew from the very start that it was material that I was

ARTISTA WINNIPEG OCTOBER 2016 ISSUE

thinking about. And of course it became convenient for us to do a show together,” Boy revealed. What was special about his 1-year-old talk show was its pace, he said.

“It’s very loose, it’s very fluid. I can open and say anything I want. I like the quickness of the interviews. And of course the brand equity of the interviews, which is the Fast Talk I invented. It’s the brevity.” Boy said that after one year, the show will be introducing changes but will retain its “core.” “The changes are massive. Lalo na in the context of viewing preferences. So we will certainly continue to listen to opinions, to preferences while retaining to the core of what we think that needs to be done,” he noted.

Sobrang saya niya ka-trabaho. ARTISTA WINNIPEG OCTOBER 2016 ISSUE

Piolo Pascual reveals drug testing is part of his annual physical checkup by: Kiko Escuadro

“As a family, kasama din yun sa yearly general check up just to make sure and whatever happens at least you know, di ba.”

“Oo para hindi ka na ma-random [drug test] or sabi nga nila pag hindi ka nag voluntary drug testing they issue a warrant or whatever, so if you’re not guilty then show it.”

“Why not? Why not ‘di ba? I have my certain advocacy you know parang you want to use your influence in a right way na din and use your image to be a good example at least pati ikaw you’re always in check,” pagtatapos ng actor.
