Clint Bondad on split with Catriona Gray: “I am truly the only one who can be blamed for anything and everything”

M

uch has been said about the controversial breakup of Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray and her former beau, modelactor Clint Bondad. B u t even so, many details still remain unclear — the question of who initiated the breakup or whether or not they’ve already separated during Catriona’s coronation in December, among many other queries, were left hanging. That is, until last Sunday night

when Clint decided to set the record straight by addressing what the public has been itching to know. “Truthfully, this will make things so much easier for both of us professionally. I agree with everything that was mentioned in the interview,” he began, referring to Catriona’s tell-all interview on late night talk show ‘Tonight With Boy Abunda’. “I am just personally closing this chapter of our lives because it has become more practical to clear things up instead of having people approach me like zombies with puppy eyes or letting certain questions linger around for too long,” he added. BY RHEA MANILA SANTOS

Gusto natin maging kagaya nung iba. So makikita niyo sa pelikula yun,” she shared during the special Eerie media preview held last March 2 at the ABS-CBN Studio Experience theater in Trinoma mall. Bea said she has always wanted to work with veteran actress Charo Santos. “Dream come true para sa akin na makasama sa isang frame si ma’am Charo. a festival. So isang milestone ito para sa akin and hindi ko makakalimutan na kasama ko si ma’am Charo sa pelikulang ito,” she explained. The Eerie star also reacted to Charo showering her with compliments during the event. They play opposing characters in the horror movie. “Kinikilig ako. Gusto kong kumuha ng copy ng lahat ng interviews namin. Sabi ko nga nung photo shoot namin, ipapa-frame ko ng malaki yung photo namin together. Di ba sino makakapagsabi na nakatrabaho mo ang Asia’s Best Actress?” she said. Clint Bondad on split with Cat... Con’t. from page 9. started by first acknowledging the weight of Catriona’s career as the new reigning queen, citing that having to choose between a crown or a love life is a “trick question” and requires only common sense. “The career of a beauty queen is so different in many ways to that of other career paths and even more extreme then that of an actor or puplic figure. Incomparable. Its a winner takes all situation and it kick starts everything into motion with an explosion, but on top of it all it’s compressed into a single year of reign,” he said. “It’s the equivalent of sitting in a burning house and someone asking you, ‘Finish your chamomile tea or get your sweet ass out of here ASAP?!’ It’s not a question about personal preference but urgent priority,” he added. The Filipino-German hunk also clarified that he and Catriona have indeed broken up prior to the coronation. Though, they didn’t get to have closure until after, when they finally had the chance to talk in private. “However, it was actually me who eventually and actively pushed to make it official,” he said. On which of the two was responsible for the breakup, Clint — in his own words — stated that he was only one who can be blamed for anything and everything, though his explanation was somewhat vague. “I was massively depressed for a long time and I literally blamed anything and everyone except our relationship... I wouldn’t even allow it in the realm of possibilities. But my protective personality and shielding of the relationship made me unable to see things clear and rational. It became counterproductive. Love truly can make you blind sometimes and make you do dumb stuff... No matter how smart you think you are. I felt like I had to do things that Cat never asked me to do and stopped things that I loved doing and persuing and even started feeling guilty for simply enjoying life. I ended up completely draining myself and became so exhausted that at the end there was little left of who I once was,” he said.

“But if Cat did anything then it’s save me from myself. I am truly the only one who can be blamed for anything and everything. I failed, because the control was always with me all along. I just realized it too late. She knew I would rather go through complete death of my own persona then accept failure,” he added. But in spite of everything, Clint

said that he still has the best interest of Catriona at heart, adding that he would’ve been heartbroken to see his former sweetheart without her crown on her head. “I am glad things happened the way they did. Sure, maybe things could have been a bit different if the outcome would have been different too,” he said. “Nobody can be blamed for things that simply happen and I actually believe that this is the best ever that could have happened for both of us. She will go down as the best Miss Universe in History,” he added. It was Catriona who confirmed that she and Clint have put an end to their six-year relationship during her ABSCBN grand homecoming late in February, through which she agreed to talk about her personal life in an exclusive interview. When asked how she balances her love life with her responsibilities as the newly crowned Miss Universe, the Filipino-Australian stunner clarified that she’s, in fact, single at the moment. “Well it’s all about balance, whatever works for your personal life. But for me, wala akong love life ngayon,” she said. “So, I’m really focused on my Miss Universe journey, on being the best global representative that I can be, and also being a representative for the Philippines through and through,” she added.

Like today when I get stressed, I get like parang pantal so it always gets red so I always put concealer. I’m also a lipstick girl so I make sure that I have like a nude or a red lippie in She revealed, “Well, I avoid the sun. I avoid the sun but sometimes like when I go to the beach, [I go] all out. But as much as possible, not make it so much of a lifestyle even if it’s so fun. It really ages you so parang if it’s especially my source of income, you know I have to make sure that [I take care of my skin], and I also get a lot of melasma, ‘cause my mom had a lot of the big freckle map ones, I really have to avoid that. “ Tip #4 Be cautious of following beauty

She shared, “I totally did the Bloody Mary when I first got it. I did that when I was young. I don’t think it works. I was breaking out when I was 13, 14 so I had to put bangs. But that’s definitely not real. You just have to chill and it will pass. “I don’t know [why I did that], everyone kept on telling me, my yaya, my mom. Although it wasn’t

She claimed, “Definitely [keep yourself] hydrated. I’ve never considered myself mestiza or anything. I’m even very yellow but because I think I drink a lot of water, I work out, I feel like my blood circulation is good so parang I feel like I’m glowing more compared to when I’m not healthy,[na] parang I’m grayish. “At 30? Siyempre a comfortable life, and happy life” ani aktres. “Ever since naman po, ako lang talaga ang nag-work for myself, and I can really say that I’m self made. Ever since I started 15 years (ago), ever since 2003, I also helped my family and nobody really helps me financially,” pahayag pa niya. Pia, Maxene Magalona honor Francis Magalona on his 10th death anniversary

H

onoring the 10th death anniversary of her late husband, rapper Francis Magalona, Pia Magalona on Wednesday looked back on the day that she had found out about his leukemia diagnosis sometime in 2008. “I remember distinctly that we were both lying in his hospital bed, watching the opening ceremony of the Olympics, when a doctor came by and asked to speak to me in the hallway. She carefully broke the news, and my only reaction was ok... so what’s the method of treatment, and how long is he going to be confined? I even had a smile on my face, because I was just glad to know they had found out why he was having daily fever and was lightheaded. The doctor then said the dreaded words: it’s cancer,” she began. Pia said that it was she who broke the news to their children in an emotional confrontation one at a time. “The most difficult was telling the three youngest who still lived at home at the time, whom I told face to face. They were only 14, almost-9

and almost-8. I cried with them with each and every revelation, answering the same questions eight times over,” she said. “Francis lived a total of 7 months

But through his music, with which he was able to touch many lives, the legacy of the legendary Master Rapper lives on, said Pia. “Our family will forever be grate-

more after that, and it was a whirlwind of confinements and discharges and treatments and test, after test, after test. Faith is really all we ever had, and still have for those he left behind,” she added.

legacy lives on. Now, more than ever, say a prayer and listen to Francis M,” she said. Francis’ daughter, actress Maxene Magalona, also took to social media Wednesday night to commemorate her father’s death anniversary. “It’s been 10 years and yet it still feels like it was just yesterday when we lost you. I admit I still miss you everyday and wish you were still here with us. But I am at peace knowing that you’re happily watching over us from heaven — far from all the pain and suffering. More than your music, art and all the beautiful things you created, my heart beams with pride every time I hear someone say kind words about you,” she said. “I’ve heard countless stories about how you treated the people around you with kindness, how you were so down to earth and how you always knew how to make others feel special and never let anyone feel left out. Thank you for showing me what it means to be human even after your death. Rap in peace, pop,” she added. Francis passed away on March 6, 2009 after his months-long battle with acute myelogenous leukemia. He left behind his wife Pia, along with their eight children, Una, Nicolo, Maxene, Frank, Saab, Elmo, Arkin, and Clara.

REFLECTIONS By Dr. Jun Vencer

I

At 73: Reflections on Age

am now 73! A deluge of well-wishers sent their kind greetings from different parts of the world. Mostly, family, friends and ministry partners. One of the verses gifted to me was taken from Psalm 91: “He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation” (vv15,16). When I was 36, I had a mild heart attack in Colorado Springs. I was too busy doing ministry I neglected my health. I remember crying out to God in great despair. I asked for at least 15 years more to live and serve Him (cf 2 Kg. 20:6). In God’s mercy, He gave me more than 15 years for which I will always be grateful. As I look back through the years, I can say: Thank you Lord for giving me a wonderful life with its ups and downs, triumphs and struggles. Thank you for my loving and faithful wife, our adoring children, and our precious grandchildren. Thank you for my loyal and trustworthy co-workers and associates in the service of the Lord from CAMACOP, PCEC, PHILRADS, AEA, WEA, DAWN, GTMI, AIC. Thank

P 24

you for giving us a spiritual global family. To the Triune God belongs all glory. So what lies ahead? Will it be retirement? Or re-tirement? When I consider Lewis Smeades’ view of life as living in a box, I think of how many more calendar boxes God will give me and how shall the heavens chronicle my life after 73. I often quoted God’s commendation on Job’s latter years, that he was doubly blessed than the earlier years (Job 42:10,12). It used to be that at 65, middle age ends and is followed by the twilight years of one’s life. Then old age was moved to 73. Recently, The Telegraph published a research study that today one is considered old at the age of 74. Academics from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Vienna, Austria, argue that old age should be measured not by the years, but by how long people have left to live. In the 1950’s to be 65 one was old and could expect to live another 15 years. Today, people are expected to live another 24 years beyond 65. Older people in the future, it is argued, will have many characteristics exhibited by younger people today. Our view on old age will keep on changing

ARTISTA WINNIPE MARCH 2019 ISSUE

in the future as people live longer, healthier lives. To be old is a relative term. One is as old as he or she thinks. It is a mindset. A friend asked me: What is next beyond 73? I said, the zest of life in the presence and power of the Lord. My birthday prayer is that God will give me and Ann more time with our children and grandchildren, to capture more moments with them. Being with them in Colorado Springs, spending time with them and laughing with them revitalizes us and makes us feel younger. Moreover, there is a debt we, need to pay, to put in writing what God had given us. We shall share wisdom from the Word and useful lessons from experiences mostly gained from failures, as a legacy to those who will find them beneficial. During one of my devotions, the words of God described what I really would like to do and that is to prepare my mind and heart to study and obey the Law of the Lord and to teach … (Ezra 7:10). Reverberating in my mind are the words, family, study, obey, teach and mission framed by the nonnegotiables of the faith: sola scriptura, sola gratia, sola fide, soli deo Gloria. My desire is to try bringing my every thought more and more in submission to Christ. Always, I am conscious of what A.W. Tozer once said: If you only know me and God knows me, you will not give me the honor you are giving me but confer it to others more worthy than me. I am simply grateful for His mercy that is new every morning. These outline my thoughts, vision and

my hope for the future. Our friend Adeline Koh from Singapore wrote that my birthday was on the 7th day of the Lunar New Year which is everyone’s birthday! But it will not diminish our appreciation for your remembering me on my birthday. Thank you all for your affirmation of love and prayers, friendship and partnership in Jesus. Ann and I truly are more blessed because of you. After Captain Marvel, will Pia Wurtzbach be introduced as the next Marvel heroine?

W

ith several fans looking forward to seeing her in one of the superhero franchise’s future films and take on the role of a Marvel heroine, Pia Wurtzbach took the opportunity to address them without closing any doors. “I don’t know about that. We’ll see. It’s always gonna be a dream for me to one day play a superhero so tignan natin kung mangyayari ‘yan sa Pilipinas o sa abroad,” she said during an interview at the special advance screening of Captain Marvel. Pia, who admitted that she is a big fan of Doctor Strange, wants to have a superpower where she could manipulate time. “I really love Doctor Strange. Like I love the concept of being able to control time. ‘Yun ‘yung talagang gusto ko. Like to be able to manipulate that in some way, like that would be really interesting to do. But ideally, in real life, just to be a strong woman like Captain Marvel would be good enough,” she said.

Though Captain Marvel isn’t as popular as the rest of the superheroes from the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe, Pia believes that given the fact that she is the most powerful among all of them, people should see her slay on the big screen. “She’s stronger than Iron Man, stronger than Captain America. Strongest. So it will be really interesting how that all happens in the story in the movie,” she said. Thanking Disney Philippines and Marvel Philippines for handpicking her to do an interview with Captain Marvel herself Brie Larson, Pia also excitingly teased about a special project she is set to do in the future without disclosing specific details. She said, “Fingers crossed matutuloy ‘yung isa pang pinaplano namin. Sana. Hindi ko pa alam. Basta.” Last month, Marvel Comics revealed that the Stan Lee-founded company will introduce a new set of Asia-based superheroes called The War of Realms with a Pinoy heroine named Wave joining the team.

Jessy Mendiola admits she suffered from a serious eating disorder

N

ever one to keep her fans out of the dark about her personal struggles, actress and fitness enthusiast Jessy Mendiola admitted that she suffered from a serious eating disorder at the same time she was going through depression a few years back. On Tuesday, the ‘TOL’ star opened up about her struggle with bulimia. According to WebMD, it is “a psychological eating disorder that is characterized by episodes of binge eating followed by purging and can result to gum disease, osteoporosis, kidney disease, heart disease, and even death.” “Losing/maintaining weight has always been a struggle for me. I only started taking my health seriously some time last year. It’s so hard to be in tip-top shape especially when a lot of people try to put you down and tell you how you’re supposed to look. Sometimes you’re too thin, sometimes too fat,” she began.

“I used to hate my thighs and arms. I would always kill myself at the gym just to achieve unrealistic body goals and starve myself just to reach my weight goal [of] 100lbs (2nd pic, 110lbs). I was depressed and heartbroken at that time (2013) and I gained 25lbs (3rd pic). I still kept pushing myself to work out every day,” she added. Out of desperation to lose weight within a short period of time, Jessy confessed that she would always resort to starvation, which, in turn, made her weak due to the lack of nutrients in her body. “I suffered from Bulimia and B.E.D (Binge Eating Disorder), desperate to lose weight in a short period of time – from 135lbs I went down to 103lbs (4th pic). I starved myself just to lose unwanted weight... to look “perfect” but I was so unhappy. I couldn’t live my life the way I wanted to. Let’s build a family and a community here, parang ganun yun. Lahat ng goals niyo, sabihin niyo lang kung ano gusto niyo mangyari and kami, part din ako dun kasi may mga times na ako mismo yung magbibigay ng sessions. Gusto ko i-share sa tao yung tumulong sa akin for all these years, kung may controversy man ako, dun ako pumupunta (sa gym) para makapag-isip,” he shared. Even though the gym itself is located on the ground floor, Gerald explained why he chose to name it The Th3rd Floor. “Th3rd floor name niya kasi halos buong career ko sa bahay ako nag-wo-workout, sa third floor ng bahay ko. Pag pumasok kayo sa bahay ko tapos hahanapin niyo ako sasabihin sa inyo ng mga tao, ‘Nasa third floor siya’ kasi kumbaga dun yung recovery time ko, yung mga workout, yung makapag-isip ng maayos. my body. This kept going until 2016 when I suddenly gained all the weight back and eventually hit my heaviest weight, 140lbs. Because of all the hate online, the struggle with myself kept going until 2017 (5th pic),” she said. But, all thanks to her fitness coach Kat Geronimo, nutritionist Nadine Tengco, Gerald revealed he first got the idea to put up a gym after getting sidelined by an injury last year. Along with his close friend and fellow Pinoy Big Brother alumni Joe Vargas, The Th3rd Floor was born. “Sa simula kasi ng season ng MVPL napunit ko

yung hamstring ko and pumupunta ako sa mga gyms para mag-rehab at mag-recover tapos naisip ko na parang gusto ko magtayo ng ganito. Nasa biyahe kami ni Joe Vargas tapos naisip namin, ‘Magtayo kaya tayo ng gym?’ Ganun yun. Hanggang sa natayo na yung gym. He made me feel better every time I felt so insecure about myself and he helped me recover from my depressionand made me feel loved every single day,” she said. “I guess all I’m trying to say is, it doesn’t matter how long it takes for you to find inner peace and whatever works for you, just stick to that. I am far from perfect but this is who I am and this is how I love myself. I love myself enough to eat what I want to make myself feel good. I love myself enough to move every day because I want to live my life as best as possible,” she added.

or may presscon or may meetings ako sa ABS-CBN malapit lang,” he said. Gerald proudly shared that he was very hands on with the construction as well as picking out all the details inside the gym. “From scratch, bawat electric fan hanggang sa lahat ako nag-design talaga kaya medyo hands-on talaga ako dito. Part of the gym’s layout also includes a basketball court which is one of Gerald’s favorite spots. “Sa totoo lang, ito yung naging selling factor din ng gym kasi dito rin makakapag-group workout dito sa gym. But para sa mga athletes, once pumasok sila sa pinto, iisipin nila, ‘Para sa akin ito.’ Yung after ng workout puwede kami mag-shooting, which we do everyday and every night. Pangarap ko magkaroon ng court. Ito na yun,” he said. Apart from helping inspire others to be fit, the talented actor also hopes to help change lives through fitness with his new endeavor. “Pag pasok ng tao dito, pantay-pantay tayo dito, walang artista, walang celebrity athlete. Kung sino ka man, pantay pantay tayo dito,” he said.
