A Message From Our Editor-in-Chief You’re about to embark on an exhilarating and inspiring journey! This publication is not a list of artists or a collection of works thrown by accident into the pages of an art book; this book is a celebration of artistic excellence and years of work and dedication in the lives of the most exciting artists in today’s art scene. In the pages of this publication, you will find mesmerizing artworks that will for sure inspire you. Being inspired allows us to tap into our higher selves. It helps us create through language, music, dance, painting, writing —whatever the mode of delivery might be—so that we can express the message the world needs, sing the song others need to hear, build the bridge we need to cross, and paint the artwork the viewers need to see. With that inspiration, we embarked on producing this book amid uncertainty in the world around us. Yet, we focused on our goal to rise above all circumstances. “Rising Above” is not just the title of the sculpture award I created for our master artists. It is my energy field, place of reflection, point of creation, and where I stand now in life. We have worked hand in hand with over sixty artists. Open ears, open hearts, we decided together on the artworks, aesthetics, concepts, and ideas, designing one by one the pages of this publication. It has been one of our most fulfilling collaborations. It was a beautiful journey of discovery and getting to know the hearts of each one of the artists presented here today, and they are all magnificent. I hope this book will bring you light and inspiration. So take your time to enjoy it again and again. I promise that you will discover something new that speaks directly to your heart each time you do. Also, feel free to reach out to the artists, as they have more to share. I have been inspired and transformed by the creations of these amazing master artists, and I’m grateful for the honor of working with them. By reading this book, I hope you also can find yourself “Rising Above.” Enjoy the ATIM Top 60 Masters of 2022. Enjoy the ride, and stay inspired.

KATRIN ALVAREZ “You can't Shred Yesterday!” Oil on Canvas+Objects 22.8”x22.8”
“The Power of Thought” By Viviana Puello
“T
he ability to make thoughts and feelings visible is of the utmost importance in my life. But, over the last few years in particular, I’ve found I can no longer do this with the tools I have, as the news from all over the world crashes into my mind, battling for my attention with all its apparent significance. I am left helpless by this shrill pandemonium, full of disrespect and aggression, and by the unconstrained exploitation of nature. I’m still searching for my responsibility as an artist. It can’t be enough to live in an aesthetic ivory tower. I’m far too quiet with my canvass and my paints”. Katrin Alvarez Award-winning master artist Katrin Alvarez is known for her compelling, dreamlike, surreal paintings that represent the complexity of human situations. Alvarez focuses on the
human figure while introducing multiple references such as objects, animals, etc. to enrich the composition conceptually as well as visually. Katrin Alvarez started as a journalist, going in-depth into the writing profession, but along the way she taught herself the art of painting, influenced and inspired by Michelangelo and Brueghel. Hidden inside each of Katrin Alvarez' paintings is a mood that is impossible to miss, the artist takes her audience on a visual journey as witnesses of people in different stances and circumstances along with elements that make an impact, slowly managing to blend in and propose some radical aesthetic and conceptual ideas.

Alvarez's works are the perfect combination of expressionism and surrealism. Her paintings are troubling and provoking yet soothing, intimate and sensitive yet bizarre, upsetting yet blissful. The compelling and transcendent imagery in her art has a form of teaching, evoking an array of emotions in the viewer. Her masterful use of color and light and skilled knowledge of the human figure allows for perfectly balanced compositions that expand the perceptions of her audience, creating room for each viewer to form different selfinterpretations of the art. u m i n o u s Icescapes are a series of photographs developed in Iceland. When visiting the Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon in the southeast of Iceland, on the borders of Vatnajökull National Park, it was mesmerizing to witness the icebergs that appear like diamonds scattered on the beach at the beginning of Creation. The fragility of the ice on the beach, with its unceasing interplay of waves and sand, is absorbing. Iceland's evolving and surrounding landscapes offer the opportunity of experiencing a hypnotic journey. The country's climate, lighting, and inherent sound activate your senses in a way you can find all kinds of detail, from whispering winds of diamond dust and rainbow reveries to the deep sound emanating from under the ice.
“Luminous Icescape Iceland No.2, 2020” Archival Pigment Print, 106.2”x45.6”
Glaciers are many hundreds of thousands of years old. They are constructed of the air and water they have inhaled over these long lifetimes, physical memories that are stored as they grow in the layers of their geology. Today we head into the Anthropocene and are in the dying days of an era of ice that has lasted for 3m years. We are transitioning into an era of
fire, a Pyrocene that may persist for tens of thousands of years. Iceland's glaciers are some of the last Crown Jewels left to visit. Every day a new sculpture is formed in the lagoon as bits of ice break, and then they float out to Diamond beach breaking down further until they melt. To me, this fragile, ephemeral beauty reflects our own life experiences through time."

mir's puzzle consecrates history, yet at the same time, he creates a new and fresh contemporary reality. His Artwork is distinguished by the geometric and sometimes abstract characters, born from a particular emotional situation or an imaginary event that the artist decides to embellish with various layers of impressive coloring.
“Ground Zero Nyc”
His Artwork emphasizes the victory of the spirit, inspiration, and beams of light he found within himself. “What you see is determined by what you attend at any given time. The environment presents far more perceptual information than the brain can effectively process. The visual attention barrier forces our brain to select the most relevant information for ongoing behavior, especially in locations containing many objects and noises.

objects together. As a photographer, I tried for a long time to create a method that would enable me the ability to create such "wholeness Photography" that integrates – physical objects, emotions, and beauty. In 2017 after 40 years of experience, I succeeded in inventing a self-method that breaks our Visual Attention barrier as a photographer that enables me to create a complete view of locations reflected in my Artwork.
“Corona Mall 1”
I found out that the first photographer barrier is the camera viewfinder, which narrows our ability to view all the objects in the location while we are shooting. First insight: Shooting must be done from my brain and not the camera viewfinder. Second insight: before shooting, I stay in the location for a while to give my brain time to study the physical objects – line shape and forms and color pigments. An emotionally filling atmosphere includes people, religion, culture, and energy. Third insight: find the best "Point of view" that covers all objects together. Cont. next page
“Tube”
32 ATIM’S TOP 60 MASTERS 2022
These three insights mentioned above draw a schema in my mind that creates the integration of the objects. Execution phase: from the selected point of view, I'm shooting hundreds of photos from different angles while not looking through the camera viewfinder but following my eyes to cover the whole brain schema. Final process: organize the photos together like a puzzle, creating "Wholeness Photography" of the location.”

make sculptures, wall pieces, and garments using textiles and found objects to explore Japanese aesthetics and the philosophy of Buddha. They are 'Wabi-Sabi,' the beauty found in imperfections, and 'Mono-no-aware,' the feeling of sympathy for changing or perishing phenomena or substances. Closely related to the philosophy of Buddha, these can be summarized in three keywords: impermanence, insubstantiality, and suffering. My work addresses infinity as the succession of fleeting and brittle activities. With freedom and flexibility, I combine acquired knowledge and experiment and create art to inspire dialogue and reflection on these concepts through materials and aesthetic philosophies. nfluenced by a successful career in the fashion industry, American artist Barbara Tyler Ahlfield creates dramatic, emotionally charged portraits that are whimsical and refined.
Her works present a world of glamour in a style that combines her love for fashion and painting, blending classical, realistic figurative techniques with a modern fashion-inspired impressionist influence.
Ahlfield explores colors, textures and captures the tactile qualities of velvet, the rich luster of satin, the feel of taffeta, and the nostalgic, crispy texture of vintage lace, taking the viewer on an indulging journey of romantic fantasy. During Ahfltield's thriving career as a Fashion Illustrator, she worked for some top U.S. department stores, including Nordstrom, Lord & Taylor, and Hutzler's. Her most recent series of fashion illustrations feature in the Summer 2021 product line of her brand Sisumoi, a company she established with her daughter Alexandra Ahlfield. Sisumoi is an online retailer of inspirational accessories designed to uplift and bring beauty with lifestyle products. Barbara Tyler Ahlfield has received several honors, including the NORMA award for lingerie advertising and cosmetic advertising, the Seklemian award for reflective color advertising, and the Federated Dept. “The Cliff of Moen I” Linocut Printed on Paper, 11.8’’x16.5’’
B
ritta Ortiz is a Danish artist who has also been a performing artist since her youth. She began exhibiting her works eleven years ago. According to the artist, to express herself artistically is as essential to her as breathing. Through her art, she reflects feelings and thoughts about the world and her surroundings while enjoying the experiences life presents to her. She relates to life in an existential way - life must be lived between the positive and negative poles - birth and death, grief and joy, etc. Furthermore, she cares about the things happening in the world and wonders why people mistreat each other. She utilizes different forms of expressions and media.

CHATARINA SALOMONSSON
C
hatarina Salomonsson is a visual artist residing in Härnösand, on the coast of central Sweden. Raised by an emotionally unstable mother, Salmonsson was forced to live a nomadic life, spending part of her childhood in an orphanage. In her adult years, she experienced domestic abuse and became a strong advocate of female empowerment.
In the fall of 2018, her love affair with painting began. Celebrating the beauty and strength of women, Salomonsson depicts erotically-charged images of dancing couples, passionate lovers, and sensual nudes. Her lust for life oozes from every pore of the canvas, holding the viewer in a warm, sensual embrace. She favors acrylic paint, indulging in the versatility of the medium to create varying degrees of translucency and thickness. Salomonsson describes the painting process as a “magical performance without the script.” Disappearing into an enchanting world of her own making, she provides a safe space for women to love and be loved. Despite her relatively short career, Salomonsson counts numerous exhibitions in Europe and the United States, with many more in the works. In addition to painting, she channels her creativity through dance and theater acting.

CHI-YU LIN “Warm Current” Oil Painting

y name is Chi-Yu Lin. I was born in 1965 and am from Taiwan. I create with oils, trying to escape the superposition technique of traditional oil painting and using a painting knife instead of brushes, combining painting, weaving, and carving techniques, like sculpture on canvas. As a result, I've developed a kind of brand new art style known as the chopping and weaving technique.
My original paintings and creations present the coexistence and glory of humanity and light shadow. Calmly observing the animals and plants, both having harmonious coexistence with nature. At present, I have created eight series of works, and each series continues to be born with intention."

DEBORAH SISCO "I
love to work with materials that move. I love how I can move the charcoal around on paper, how the brush moves the oil paint on the canvas, and how the clay feels in my hands when sculpting. I am not a planner, I cannot see a painting or a drawing before I begin, and though I plan the sculptures ahead of time, all of my works dictate what they become. Each stoke of the brush is dictated by the one just before it. It is about the process, the color, the form, and most of all, the materials. I love to experiment with new materials and new processes and the challenge it presents to me. My work is about just seeing things differently and the exhilaration of being free. I believe that to love art is all about learning to see. I want my viewers to experience my art not how I see it but how they see it. It should be a personal experience that is different for each person. That experience should be visually pleasing, happy, or even disturbing, but not empty. I have started working with AI, feeding hundreds

the adventure begins. It's terrifying yet exhilarating; it is pure chaos. The paintings I create from this point are not intended to make a statement; they are not meant to be "understood"; there is no hidden message. Instead, they are an experience of chaos; since we live in a world full of chaos, we must learn how to relate to it and fit in. Each piece reflects me, and I have abandoned notions of what a good painting should look like and have given in to allow each new work just to become whatever it decides to be."

rt speaks to us in many visual languages. Occasionally art will speak with a representational language. On other occasions, art will present fantasy or a mystery language. Art can advocate or warn. Art challenges the viewer to look and listen with intent. What the viewer sees is the interpretation of the conversation between the art and the viewer's soul. Art provides a visual representation of the beauty created by Father God in our world, within human connections, and in life's purpose. Utilizing this visual language to motivate and grow is my desire. I paint from my heart, giving viewers a window into my soul. I have found this provides freedom to be human. s a traditional, non-digital painter (just oil on canvas), I’ve been commissioned by many publications, from The New York Times to The Village Voice. Since 2001, I’ve concentrated on gallery work with an editorial, satirical slant, essentially larger oil paintings with conceptual content reminiscent of my illustration years. Lampooning politicians, pundits, or spiritual leaders specializing in alternative facts, manufactured outrage, false equivalents, convoluted conspiracy theories, and tunnel-visioned tribalism (whew) is my form of protest and provides a satisfying outlet. These themes are prevalent in many of my paintings, although they are often explored using satire & humor as opposed to a sledgehammer. Socio-political commentary...... shaken, not stirred. "

What Inspires You? What connection do you have to your art? "Painting was simply something I always wanted to do but never had time to try. When I found myself with an abundance of time because of the mandatory COVID-19 quarantine regulations, I wanted to channel my energy into something creative that I could undertake without socializing. So, in
May of 2020, I picked up my first paintbrush in the hope of bringing beauty and light back to a world darkened by the pandemic. There were thoughts and feelings I needed to express without being judged. So, using a paintbrush, I chose to reflect upon and interpret the beauty that remained. The pandemic may have forced me to isolate and look inward. But the fact that art experts intend to ensure I have an artistic future and think I have something to contribute to the art world provides all the inspiration I need to continue on this unexpected path. "

What does your art aim to say? "Because I believe the viewer's interpretation always trumps the artist's, the meaning in my artwork belongs to the viewer's heart and imagination. I leave it to you, the viewer, to draw on your emotional memories and listen to the whispers of your imagination to assign a personal and universal context that makes my work meaningful to you. Though I may never tell you the story a painting is meant to suggest, it is only because that story is yours to tell. In most cases, this provides me with a distinct advantage because your interpretation of that story is usually much more interesting. Although my goal is for others to be inspired to assign meaning to my work, accomplishing that goal is preceded by a creative process. As I tend to look at the world in relation to color, the first thing I do is choose colors that will complement one another or not complement one another, depending upon how I feel. I never look at the clock because, for me, creating something meaningful is an intense process in which time ceases to exist." What's your most significant barrier to being an artist? How do you address it? "When I began painting, it did not occur to me that sales and international recognition would be part of my artistic experience. At first, I was a bit too attached to my work. I finally realized that I would let people see it but not buy it. When I opened myself up to the idea of spreading the beauty by letting it go, the response was overwhelming. I engaged with some of the most insightful art lovers, curators, collectors, and investors I have ever known. Even though I did not begin painting to pursue an artistic career, once I realized people consistently wanted to buy my work, engaging in the business side was my greatest challenge."

those touched by my work. It is liberating to be allowed to think for myself in an arena in which I can never be wrong. I hope to pass on that sense of freedom to the viewer—freedom of thought without any cloud of judgment. However long that happens to take me is time well spent."

I know I have been extremely fortunate. To try something new and realize you love it is one thing. But, gaining the recognition of experts in the field is thrilling. Moreover, the fact that collectors consider my work worthy of owning gives me the most incredible opportunity to spread the beauty of art throughout the world. This fills my heart and allows me to contribute in a way I never thought possible—by translating the colors of my world into art and providing viewers the freedom to find emotional meaning in the intangible by evoking the unconscious use of their imaginations."

aking art to me is a profound process of personal discovery and development. My work manifests beauty and seeks the inner creative significance to reach those who appreciate classical ideals while still being inspired by contemporary ways of speaking about human values. I am fascinated by forms and textures existing in nature and am compelled to express their meaning, unique purpose, and beauty in connection to human experiences through my work. Each of them is a deliberate effort to communicate viewpoints originating from moments of self-discovery. Something happens on the canvas that is beyond my conscious choices. My favorite medium is oil paint because it provides an expressive ability and flexibility to create and achieve remarkable results. For sculpture, I enjoy working with clay. A single strand of thread is a symbolic form of human beings, and it can be viewed as a fragment of daily time or memory or as a relationship between the individual and society. We want to increase the meaning of individual life in modern society, and we repeatedly express minimal images. It deals with the problem of individual identity in modern society.

JANICE ALAMANOU "E
ach of my artworks are amalgamations of work created, sometimes over the years, to find the right subjects to blend, telling a story and relating a message. Actual to perceptual fine art photography.
Life? Do to others only what you would have done to yourself. Be kind, as every person has their problems. Walk a good path and not inflict pain or suffering. Help, nurture, and love. At this age, I feel confused and astonished at the level of violence used by a leader for gain. What is he thinking? What a silly man. For the people who battle for peace, stability, health, and happiness, I create my fine art photography as a tribute to you. To bring extra recognition to 'our time' through art. The images are still relevant today from the Kosovo conflict when I first wrote the words in 'Tomorrow,' through many more wars."

JEAN JACQUES PORRET What Inspires You? What connection do you have to your art? "Everyone is continuously influenced by everything. We cannot learn to be an artist or a creator. That's something one is born with. So many people try to be artists, but they lack that little crazy item called "being creative." To illustrate it, Rembrandt was an excellent painter, yes, but not creative; he was painting what he saw. VanGogh was maybe not a great painter but a fantastic creator. He was painting what influenced him. Both of them were great artists. We should define the word 'creative.' I'm sure that most people would have a different definition. For me, it's related to IMAGINATION. I do not know the dictionary definition, but creating is for the cook to use just the right amount of salt in the potatoes, knowing when it's too much or not enough. Look at Jacques Peppin; no cookbook, no teleprompter, he just does it; he creates a meal, using his feeling, his imagination. He is the perfect cooking artist." What does your art aim to say? "It is tough not to be influenced. I met many of the greatest sculptors of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and yes I was influenced by them, but not anymore. I constantly need to be very careful and reject being influenced. I create my style, my path; I create out of my imagination. I'm more interested in communicating an abstract feeling or idea than an actual image. My work is figurative, but it's not about the figure." What's your most significant barrier to being an artist?

How do you address it? "Recognition. Today people are more interested in the new wave of electronic toys, smartphones, electronic games, etc. People don't look at the esthetic and beauty of things anymore. I believe that my sculptures are sensual, attractive, and pleasing to the eyes and the touch. People don't need to wonder what it is, what it looks like, or what it is supposed to be. I guess that continuously showing these sculptures might, with time, bring me the recognition I need. I believe I create something to outlast me in this world." What does generosity mean to you as an

Where it all started: Born into a family of art and antique collectors in Switzerland, art was in Porret’s blood from the moment he was born. As soon as his hands were able, he began carving wood at the age of 6. That propelled him forward, finished his engineering degree, and traveled to Chicago, traveling to the United States to begin his journey as an engineer and Artist. Honing his technique and growing his bronze collection, Porret began to showcase his work at Peter Miller Gallery in Chicago, IL.
1985 Over the next 33 years, Porret’s work would be featured in over 46 gallery shows, both solo and group exhibitions. He also received many awards and recognition, including RMG Artist of the Year in 2016!

artist? How do you emulate this? "Unfortunately, I'm not interested to teach because, as said earlier, I do not believe one can learn to be an artist. Many galleries and even museums are showing so-called avant-garde sculpture or art. Most of these are not creative and even lack total imagination. It seems that the most disturbing they are to esthetique and beauty, the best it is. Is that what is called inspiration? Art does not need to be representative of an existing image but needs to be fluid and pleasing. These are the creative artists who deserved to be recognized, and I would like to create a book or series of books illustrating them accordingly. "

ith an intuitive, multidisciplinary approach to art, my work is based on an exploratory discovery process, as I choose whether it is traditional or digital, or to combine both. I explore my creativity as an artist vis-à-vis traditional and new media art, discovering quality using new technologies within contemporary culture. Culture is the soul of art, as much as art is the soul of the culture. My art is a mirror reflecting my soul and everything related to myself, my thoughts, passions, feelings, identity, and values. It depicts my experiences, memories, and connection to the world as a universal Western-Eastern woman whose goal is to empower women to aspire for positive social change. I show versatility in my work that embraces various styles in traditional, digital and light mediums that balance traditional insight with the contemporary formulation. I began art from early childhood, developed a passion for portraits and figurative art, and painted prominent people’s portraits from real life. aria Isabel Matthews explores with her art a wide range of techniques and styles. Employing mixed media with oil and acrylics, she layers each color with seamless transitions, resembling the natural environment.
She captures the romanticism encompassing abstraction to impressionism and landscapes to urban views through soft textures and warm color palettes. Sharp details add depth to her figurative works, revealing emotion and personality through each gaze and movement in her subjects. Matthews's brushstrokes add a smooth rhythm and vitality to the painting. It is as if they give us a glimpse into her mind and the movement of her thoughts and feelings. Vivid monochromatic images focus on small and individual marks in the context of vastness. Her work balances traditional and representational art; and romanticizes the chosen settings, people, and culture. Her ability to connect with natural beauty has driven her efforts to speak about environmental issues.

Thematically, Matthews champions environmental conservation and highlights the detrimental effects of global warming. Her abstract works depict the impending danger facing the earth, highlighting the forest fires, hurricanes, and droughts; while using her subjects as a metaphorical symbol of the strength and natural will possessed by such wonders. She has been a prominent figure in Gibraltar's local art scene for many years, driven by a passion for painting and inspired by the beauty of nature, the magnificent architecture it encompasses, and humanity's versatility.

To briefly recap, I was born in Lithuania in 1962. At Antanas Martinaitis Art School and Academy of Art, I was taught art techniques, styles, and the finer points of the craft. The spiritual level of artworks is fundamental to me. Leonardo Da Vinci wrote many years ago, "Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art." My artworks are poems on canvas. To achieve particular expressions, I stylize forms by simplifying them in my own unique way. My pictures have elements of surrealism, pointillism, and conceptualism. The idea behind the artwork is essential to me.

My current artworks are traditional, oil on canvas, though for many years, my favorite technique was the production of collages using numerous materials, including wood, sawdust, mirrors, leather, and textiles. ver the past few years, my artwork has changed immensely while still showing a hint that this is uniquely my own. I come to the canvas free of preconceptions and open to possibilities. There is a form of flow that transpires in which my inner phrenic conceptions and feelings pour out through my brushes.
While I am into a new canvas, it feels as if I am on a constant quest for discovery and knowledge and clarity and insight into perception – thought, dreams, emotion, habits, mediocrity, and brilliance. For a long time now, I have found myself committed to illuminated landscapes. “Dark Fantasy” Acrylic on Canvas, 30”x36”
There is an eternal romance between light and color that bathes the landscapes, where the magic of the rays of light affect the surfaces and explode in colors and textures that give life to the space. I began my artistic journey to explore the beautiful aspects of nature and focus on what lies between them. I consider my work a dialogue, a spiritual expression in which the physical and psychological properties affect the viewer. Painting is a reality, among realities, which has been felt and formed."

always look for a subject that evokes mood and story. I am primarily a figurative artist. Creating a character that viewers can relate to is my goal, conversation, and story. Watercolor is a very challenging, unpredictable medium. It keeps me alert and on edge, just like life. I paint wet-into-wet: wetting both sides of the paper and using thick cotton fabric as a base. The soaked fabric feeds water to the paper, allowing me to paint for hours without it getting dry. As a result, the colors remain fresh and clean, and I am able to paint in several sessions. To create a variety of textures and edges, I control the moisture with lint-free paper towels. I avoid frisket, instead leaving the white of the paper for highlights or lifting them out while the paper is still moist. Daniel Smith granulating watercolors are particularly helpful in adding texture and creating rich, painterly darks.”

With his acrylic paintings, Joosten takes observers to a new reality, created by his broad brushstroke and his way of scraping one color across the next to create unique transitions. The traces of his tools bear witness to his process-oriented way of working. The texture of colored spaces is a particular focus in his work. The resulting paintings become projection screens for the observer's thoughts, emotions, and dreams. Abstraction seems to have grown a soul. At times, a deep Sky blue starts a conversation with bright red structures, or an immaterial lemon yellow run into a figure sporting a gray design.

Exploring his creativity as a way for him to keep his mental health. His paintings are internal images. They come from a level beyond time and space, beyond the personal ego, where complete stillness and chaos coexist. He calls his style Archetypical Expressionism.

What Inspires You? What connection do you have to your art? "Well, that has differed throughout my lifetime. Between 1973, when I started art school, and 1996, my past, my strong feelings of guilt, anger, and my situation as an immigrant inspired me. Suppose that's the right word to use. Rather, an inner force, a strong need to purify myself, pushed me forward. In 1996 I had an exhibition shown in different museums throughout Sweden that I called "Unwanted lives." Photos of unwanted people, from the early days of photography in the series "The face of madness" to the racial theories of the beginning of the twentieth century to still images from Nazi-Propagandafilms and portraits from concentration camps and current ones from Swedish mental institutions. All in all, 119 portraits of unwanted humans. Among them were photos of me, naked, exposed, humiliated in the same way those historic humans had been. There was a massive pyramid of soap in the room, a performance of me, half-naked with a whitewashed body, and automatically, uncontrolled written lyrics and chaotic sound walls from a synthesizer. I couldn't have expressed myself more openly and direct. From that moment on, I was liberated from the past. I could feel inspiration on a different level. It was a catharsis, the end of my mourning process. Nowadays, my inspiration comes from my inner joy, from my desire to be human. But also from painting itself. Once there are a few colors or structures on the canvas, the actions quickly turn into a momentum of their own. Then I follow what unfolds by necessity. There's essentially no difference between what people call the natural world and my inner world. I'm aware that my consciousness and life experiences give me the
“Shadow Movement 3” Oil on Canvas, 78.7”x57.4”
impression of external reality, but it's always me who creates it. So for me applies: as the inner, so the outer. In my art, I want to unite differences and spread optimism about the human psyche's ability to bring about change in the same way art has helped me to process my German history. Ok, maybe there is still some darkness in me, but I'm confident. It keeps me from drifting away into a sentimental sweetness that we can see many Cont. next page of these days."

What does your art aim to say? “That’s a difficult one! As I said, I work as uncontrolled and spontaneous as I can, with no plan or particular idea from the beginning. Just trying to remain in the Now as long as possible. So, from inside of me comes nothing but emptiness and life-energy without any underlying messages. On the outside it may look different, I don’t know and honestly, I try not to care. Every spectator has her or his own world to associate to, her own pair of glasses that give her ideas about what she sees and what she remembers when being confronted with my mountains of scratched, dripping paint. To me it’s just color and energy.”

What’s your most significant barrier to being an artist? How do you address it? “This question implies that there must be barriers for an artist. I don’t see it like that. For me my life, my existence as a human being, my expressions in the field of art are all the same. It’s a natural way of existing and without barriers. If you would ask a bird “what’s your biggest barrier in singing your song?” it wouldn’t understand the question. I always follow my inner joy and let me guide by my higher self, so what comes out of it is not even “Art” but traces.”
“Red Death,” Oil on Canvas, 68.8”x 53.1”
What does generosity mean to you as an artist? How do you emulate this? “Come to think of some Niel Young lyrics: ‘I want to live, I want to give, I’ve been a miner for a heart of gold’. Generosity is for me the same as creativity. Expression without censorship. All my life, I have stood on a stage to perform, offer, give, and be a raw model. Art is for me what keeps us together as humans. It’s the traces left behind after an inner walk towards freedom. Generosity is the energy that makes it possible.”
What’s next for your creative endeavors? “Well, I don’t strive so much anymore, I just do. I am the creator of what comes out into the visible world through my hands and I appreciate and respect that. I work together with an agency in Hamburg, they will send me to different museum exhibitions in China this year, later on they will publish a book about my life and my art, in May I participate in an exhibition in Bologna, Italy, and in October I will be part of the EuropArt Fair in Amsterdam.” Backhaus’ art unites and spreads optimism regarding the human psyche’s ability to bring about change in the same way art has helped him to process his German history. His work has been shown in many Swedish and German galleries and museums. Backhaus lives and works in Gothenburg and Berlin.

y art should captivate the viewer so that they can get lost in the vast horizons of the present. What triggers me to create a painting are the emotions I want to pass on, which is also why people might identify with my works.
Instead of letting myself or my art down on the spectrum of political or elite thoughts, I want the viewer to find truth when decoding my works. The layers I aim at are way above that and deal with consciousness and the highest of all. LOVE"

TORHILD FRØYDIS EID “I am a passionate painter, and I love experimenting with colors, textures, and techniques. I always aim to create highquality artworks and improve my acrylic painting skills and mixed media techniques. I find inspiration in my daily life and my dreams. I focus on the positive and all the beauty in life. The animals, the sea, the sky, the mountains, and the light are my main sources of inspiration. Music and lyrics give extra spices to the creative process. In my paintings, I seek to transfer my inner sensations and what I see from "my inner eye" to the canvas. So often, it turns out in an unpredictable form. Introspection is also essential as a means of revealing and restoring painful memories, as well as focusing on healing and seeking peace. In a world in chaos and with significant challenges, I hope the Power of Art can make the World a more peaceful place,

VAYDRA WRIGHT
V
aydra’s first creative processes began around the spiritual transcendence arising from developing voluntary mental fortitude for survival in the situation of private pain and suffering.
Her progression in creative skills developed through a raw canvas with little to no material and subject matter, just the conscious handling of paint splashes. It is hither that her creator mind marvels and organically develops the ideal basis. She presses wet in wet strokes, skillfully combining the fluid mix of selected colors and manufactured substances to blend perfectly into a paste; and naturally form a block of texture. It is the key component of two or three visible layers that makes the creative artist feel organically its progressive development. Concomitantly, Vaydra incorporates internal battles with her idealistic moves and creative results. She ponders carefully on the scientific perspectives, that is, the instinctive capacity to experiment with both nature and manufactured substances simultaneously. Vaydra favorably considers the two distinct disciplines as one, to find something new and imaginative, to test and demonstrate satisfactorily in transfer processes, and forecast. She acted with less magnanimity, less awareness of the way, her hand movements sweeping majestically across the visible layers. Vaydra becomes intimately connected with the intriguing ethnic evolution linked to the artistic manipulation of eternal light and darkness. Her task is to control the composition at the point of convergence, contingent upon a particular proportion of the shade of its color with nature and manufactured substances. Intriguingly, her accomplished works were astute to subtly alter the orientation itself after the drastic complete set-up. What is interesting about her technical skills are her distinctive style to paint in a unique set of artistic ability while aiming for mental accomplishment and critical change in the authentic depiction of modern art movement, and creative evolution in one’s work.
“Seepage Field” Mixed media contemporary artwork, 35”H x35”Wx4”D
“Death and Afterlife” Canvas, 19.7”Wx19.7”Hx4”D
Vaydra aims to achieve a superb equilibrium; at the same time making significant progress beyond traditional compositional examples. It seems that she frequently enjoys carefully peeling the layers of her work to uncover the underparts; the skinlike texture peeled to reveal internal mind mechanisms and convey her expressed emotions to the surface. Her innovative vision seeks to create a meaningful depiction in which others can utilize her perspective while simultaneously incorporating their own. Vaydra’s accomplishments are manifest in her questionings: Does the composition have to convey a particular message or, more importantly, is the creative mind taken in consideration?

y name is Stefan Hessman and I am from Sweden. I see myself as an art and nature photographer. I say that I paint with my camera as I am interested in folk lore and legends.
I create mystical and suggestive images. It’s usually in black and white because I can then bring out what I see in the pictures and hope that the viewer sees it too. Nature is the place where I typically find my beautiful models. It’s just so wonderful and we have to really care for it and not let it be destroyed. One of the projects that I’m working on right now is a documentation of a man who became homeless in february 2007. It was through my work as a security guard that I got to meet him in church and I have known him for about 2 years. After showing him some of my photos he asked me if I wanted to document his life and I gladly accepted that offer. My photos are to be seen at my instagram: natursandviken.

The heart is something we all need. And the world is in need of more hearts and love, so that we can remain on this earth. It was amazing to see this heart out there in the nature. You just instantly felt the connection to the nature and you felt free and reminded of the love you have for our earth. Love conquers all.

"I
'm Tjeerd Doosje, a 56-year-old self-taught photographer from The Netherlands. My official profession is being a math teacher at a high school. At a given moment, there was this makeup course at our school, and I collaborated with a makeup artist, doing some mini photoshoots at the end of each lesson. One pupil in particular always attended the lessons, and because I liked doing photoshoots so much, I asked her and her parents whether it would be okay to do a full photoshoot at their home. They approved, and in July 2012, the first "official" photo shoot was a fact. I'm an impassioned photographer who wants to connect with my models. I always hear other photographers talk about their subjects. Although that may be the proper term, I think it's an odd expression because, in this kind of photography, we're talking about and with persons, and saying "subject" de-humanize the person, in my opinion. I want to portray the person slightly differently than a "normal" portrait. I'm a perfectionist both during the shoots and in the postproduction. That means that the lighting on the set must be right, and I must have that connection with my model, which always starts in pre-production. “Merlin (1203)” 15.7”x23.6”
It sometimes means that placing the model and/or light is a matter of segments of inches. I already know which photos will be post-processed during the shoot because I get thrilled by the image I just shot. Most of the time, my images have more contrast and saturated colors than what seems to be the trend nowadays.
I consciously do not name my photos because that unconsciously influences the viewer. Instead, they are named by only the model and, in parentheses, a four-digit number. The first two digits represent the number of the photoshoot, and the last two digits represent the number of the photo.
“Merlin (0313)” 15.7”x23.6”
I always want the best for my models, and wherever I can, I will showcase them so that I can contribute to their modeling careers. Therefore, I always look for an image that is (slightly) different from the average, with portrait work having my slight preference. Although I have been selected as ATIM Top 60 Masters for my entire oeuvre, I consciously choose to submit this selection of photos of model Merlin Sen. The theme of this series of photos is: "The development of a model."

Merlin started with me as a starting model and wants to become a professional model. Therefore, this international prize seems to be an extremely suitable opportunity to draw extra attention to her. Photography is a form of art, and just like any other form of art, it evolves and depends on the zeitgeist. The photos of Merlin reflect her evolution of her as a model. Creating a unique photo always depends on the connection between the model(s), the makeup artist(s), and the creativity that manifests during the photoshoots. In my opinion, it's never my art alone but also a collaboration between people that reflects in the photo. Without model(s), there would never be a piece of art like I'm making." “Merlin (1003-4)” 15.7”x23.6”

s an artist, I express myself in an expressive and naivistic manner. Nearly close to naturalism. I aim to show the beauty of life and human relationships. The individual communication with one's perceptions and thoughts. Also, what goes on between two or more individuals on different levels and situations in their interactions. Why? Because trying to understand myself and others in the light of my background has been vital to me. I also need fellow human beings or media to mirror my search for being me, being a conscious body and soul, and finding meaning in life. I love having an interchange of experiences to develop myself towards knowledge of life laws and ad professionally in my work.

"I
was born in China in 1997. I am an individual artist right now. I never thought I would become an artist before. When I was young, I read many comic books because comic books let me experience another world, which can feel much more fun than real life. Becoming a cartoonist was my dream. It never changed until I went to college at San Francisco Art Institute, which I accidentally chose, unaware it was a Fine Art school and did not offer cartooning classes.
The most important thing is that I did not realize the differences between Fine Art and Commercial Art. At that time, I thought they were the same and assumed I could attend any art school. However, at that time, I wanted the San Francisco Art Institute because I went through the school information on the internet. It said the San Francisco Art Institute is not only just a school; the San Francisco Art Institute also is a famous tourist place. This introduction attracted me a lot, so I chose the San Francisco art Institute and am so appreciative I spent four years in that school. Maybe because the school won't teach you how to make a comic book, it will teach you how to build your own "comic book" even if it has many differences from the usual comic book that we see today.

During my college years, I changed my dream of becoming a cartoonist to focusing on Fine Art. I want to be an artist. I want to find my own world and try to let people accept my world. My college inspired me a lot. Reality tires me. My work attempts to give form to the things in my mind. Many artists have their own style, and when people see their artworks, they can find out who the artist is. I am different. I don't think people can find out about me when they view my work. My artworks' styles are constantly changing. I think the reason is I think I have a different personality in my body. Those artworks hold different styles and personalities, and when they combine together, It makes me complete. Here is an example, when I make a point about something, I break the point that I made. Later, I will use the point that I made at the start, then continue to break the new conclusion I just got. I am contradictory. But those two points can present who I am even though those two points are fought with each other. This may be why I can understand different people and different ideas. In short, I can feel different people, but I disagree with them. Becoming an artist is very hard. You know how the world makes a definition for art, but you can also use that definition to fight with art itself and use the fighting process to create a new thing. When it happens, I accept it and use them to build my own art. People treat art in different ways in our lives, and sometimes, it is hard to have a good conversation with the people who got different ideas about art. It is hard to let them understand how differences work in the art system. I always agree on differences because my characteristic is holding different personalities in my body. Also, I tell myself I don't need to understand every perspective, but I need to hear them. This can improve my thinking structure. I intend to continue to live authentically regarding my creative vision; even if life changes, my truth remains expressed."

Reality tires me. I want to spend time in a world of illusion that exists in my mind. I am comfortable and relaxed in the world of my mind. My work is an attempt to give form to the things in my mind.

“Diffusion”, Acrylic, Markers On Wood Panel Board, 12”x12”
A
ustralian artist, Wendy Cohen, creates vibrant and colorful abstract art with her focus on shape and geometric forms. She pays homage to nature by using collage, color, and texture to create a sense of fluidity and depth experienced in natural settings to form her abstract creations.
In Cohen’s textured mixed media paintings, she collages hessian elements, cardboard, photos, paper, and recycled materials. The materials she uses in her work direct our attention to caring about our resources’ intentional use in all we do.

Wendy Cohen’s style explores shapes, lines, forms, and colors in relation to natural and urban surroundings communicated in an abstracted language. Everything, in reality, is a conglomeration of shapes, and by integrating shapes into a cohesive body of colors and forms in conjunction with collage elements, Wendy aims to convey her poetry and harmonious rhythm to her paintings, developing playful imagery with a dynamic and inventive sensibility.

“M
y work is primarily figurative depictions of the female experience; I am inspired to speak up about inequality and social issues women often face in Western culture, focusing on their courage and beauty. I am committed and very passionate about my work on gender equality and female empowerment, two subjects that are sorely lacking in society.”
My goal is to bring awareness to this problem and do my part to facilitate change. I am an international awardwinning American Expressionist artist, inspired mostly by Picasso, ToulouseLautrec, Edvard Munch, Matisse and the German Expressionists. www.ricconn.com
