アサヒ・アートスクエアは 2011 年より、毎年 1 名のアーティストやキュレーター、ディレクターを迎え、アサヒ・アートスクエアのユニークな空 間の発信を目指す「 オープン・スクエア・プロジェクト」を開催しています。本プロジェクトのテーマは＜空間の実験＞。高さ6m 、総面積約
260 ㎡のメインフロアを中心に、アサヒ・アートスクエアの空間と対峙し、その魅力を引き出すことでこれまでにない体験をつくりだす、スケー ルの大きな作品や企画を発表しています。
3 回目となる今回は、インディペンデント・キュレーターの水田紗弥子を公募で選出し、展覧会「 Alterspace ─ 変化する、仮設のアートスペー ス」を開催します。水田はこれまで組織や機関に所属しないインディペンデントな立場を生かして、既存のアートのシステムや制度を問い直 すような、展覧会を企画、開催してきました。ギャラリーなどの用意された展示空間だけでなく、銭湯や古本屋、洋服店など、日常空間を展示 空間に変容させることで、あらためて「 展覧会とは何か 」、 「アーティストの作品を体験するとは何か」と、キュレーターの役割の可能性を探求

してきたのです。近年はアート専門のインターネット放送局「 comos-tv 」の創設に参加し、同時代のアートに関わる様々な人々との対話を重 ね、 また韓国のアーティスト、オルタナティブ・スペースの実践のリサーチを続けるなど、 その視野を国内だけでなく東アジアにも広げてきました。 今回水田はそうしたこれまでの実践と調査をふまえ、アサヒ・アートスクエアに期間限定のアートスペース「 Alterspace［オルタースペース］」 を創出します。このスペースは、会期終了後の継続展開も視野に入れ、 「 一時的 」で、 「 仮設 」的に組み立てられるものです。これは、特定の場 を持たないインディペンデント・キュレーターが、議論や実験を継続的に実践するためのプラットフォームであり、水田が提示するキュレーター の新たな活動モデルとも言えるでしょう。
会場では、実験的な展覧会を行っている日本、中国、韓国のグループやアーティストの紹介、日中韓のアーティストの作品展示、 トークイベン トやワークショップなど、様々なアクティビティを日々展開していきます。総勢 20 名を越えるアーティストの展示作品によって構成された空
間を舞台に、多彩な実践を継続的に展開することで、会期中、アサヒ・アートスクエアは様々な表情をみせながら変化していく、Alter( 変 化する )space（ 場） となっていきます。一人のキュレーターが積極的に周囲に働きかけ、ネットワークを組み、人を巻き込み、実験の場に変え て行く。アサヒ・アートスクエアは東アジアの多様な文化が交差するハブとなり、対話、興奮、議論、そして創造的な相互の交流が生まれるこ とでしょう。このダイナミックなプロセスから新たな芸術活動を生み出していく 「 Alterspace［オルタースペース］」をじっくりとお楽しみください。
Alterspace ( オルタースペース）の実践
言葉ではいくらでも拡げていくことができるアイディア、歩いているときに思いつく一瞬の閃きや、会話のなかで膨らんで行く夢想を、 どう実践できるのか。そ れを試すことを許してくれたのがアサヒ・アートスクエアでした。私は、約１年をかけて、 いろいろなところにでかけていき、たくさんの人との会話から、言葉によっ という存在しない架空の空間を拡張していきました。 て「オルタースペース」
実際の空間が作り出されるまで、たくさんのアイディアがこぼれ落ちたり、膨らんだ妄想が潰れてしまったものもあります。でもそれらはいつかこの架空の公 園のような、移動式サーカスのような、四次元ポケットのような、 この 「オルタースペース」で実現できるはずです。このプロジェクトは、会期のはじまる前から、徐々 に始まっていました。そして会期の終わった後も移動と寄生を繰り返し、時には誰かの家で、誰かのカバンの中で、時には海を越えて、時には紙の上で「オルター その場そのものに変化をもたらし、去って行きます。そこには何かの変化が残るはずで、 そういう意味をこめ、Alter( 変化する ) スペース」がさまざまな場に接続し、
space（ 場）と名付けました。
この発明の素晴らしいところは、アートスペースを誰でもすぐに始めることができるところです。オルタースペースの第一回目は、私自身の展覧会の試み、中 村土光による日替わりの展覧会、近藤恵介の12ヶ月のための絵画という作家自身による新しい展示形式の試み、永岡大輔の言葉による試み、東アジアから ゲストを招きトークイベントや対話を行うという盛りだくさんな内容になりました。
は杉の木を700 本も植えたら良いと思いつき、実際にみんなに笑われながら杉の木を植えます。虔十は、 宮沢賢治の「虔十公園林」のなかで、虔十（けんじゅう）
「雨の中の青い藪を見てはよろこんで目をパチパチさせ青ぞらをどこまでも翔けて行く鷹を見付けてははねあがって手をたゝいてみんなに知らせ」るのですが、 そんな自然の美しさに思わず笑みがこぼれてしまう虔十を子供たちがばかにするので、はあはあと息だけついて笑いをごまかしています。 ここで私は思うのですが、虔十が自然と対峙し、 その素晴らしさをにやにやと笑ってしまい、 それをどんなに馬鹿にされても、杉の木を700 本も植えるまでの実 践があるということです。独自の方法で物の本質に向き合い、思考を重ね、真摯に実践に向き合う姿は、例えそれが人に馬鹿にされ、笑われてもとてもすがす そして杉の木が育たずに枝を切ってしまってもなお、子供たちの遊び場となる がしい。オルタースペースの実践は、700 本の杉の木を植える大胆さと真摯さ、 ような、多層的な意味を含む実践の場にしたい。

From 2011, Open Square Project of Asahi Art Square has selected 1 artist or 1 curator/director, capable of recreating the Square into unique space. The main theme of this Project is <Experiment of Space>. Through this Project, the selected artists or curators have presented large-scaled art works and art projects, which fully utilised this 6m-high and 260m2-wide space and created something which have never been experienced before. The 3rd curator selected for Open Square Project, Mizuta Sayako is presenting her own project Alterspace – Constantly Changing Temporary Art Space from the 11th day of January, 2014. Since the beginning of her career as an independent curator, Mizuta has planned and organised exhibitions raising questions to the established art systems and institutions. So far, she has not only used galleries and other art spaces already prepared to have exhibition, but also transformed spaces of our daily life – e.g. a public bath, a clothing shop, etc. – into spaces for exhibitions. By doing so, she has constantly asked

questions such as What is an exhibition? and How we experience works of artists? , and continued her inquiries on the role of a curator. Recently, she participated in the foundation of comos-tv an internet-based broadcasting station specialised in arts, and continued discussions with many people involving themselves in contemporary arts in diverse ways. She also has researched artists from Asian countries including Korean artists. She has expanded her viewpoint to East Asia and sought the answer to the question of What would be the new model of a curator? Based on the results of her artistic activities and researches, Mizuta is creating Alterspace , a temporally-limited space, at Asahi Art Square. She took it into consideration that Alterspace would be continued even after Open Square Project 2014 was finished. That s why it is temporary . This is a platform for this independent curator, who can cope with the siutation flexibly and promptly, to sustain discussions and experiments. This also can be conceived as a new model of an art activity suggested by Mizuta. Asahi Art Square, the 1st series of Alterspace would be, as the starting point, the art hub of East Asia, and diverse activities including exhibitions, workshops and talk event would be executed. As the nature of this location is changed from our daily conversation and practices, new cultural activities are created, and spectators may be able to enjoy Alterspace to the fullest. We would like to express out gratitude towards all the people who have provided tremendous supports and helps for the hosting of Alterspace – Constantly Changing Temporary Art Space . Praxis of Alterspace Sayako Mizuta［curator］ Words are the basis of ideas which can expand unlimitedly. It sometimes strike me at a flash of moment while walking, and daydreams may get bigger and bigger as a conversation goes on. The key is, how I can actually transform these ideas into practice. Asahi Art Square is the place which allowed my endeavour. For more than a year, I ve visited many places, talked with many people, and expanded this virtual space called Alterspace which did not have physical existence. Until it happens in an actual space, there were times when the dreams collapsed as there were too much flood of ideas. But these ideas, like a travelling circus, or 4-dimensional pocket, will be able to be realised via Alterspace at some point. This Project began and moved slowly much before, and even after Alterspace at Asahi Art Square ended, it will continuously and repetitively be migrating and parasitic in someone s house or inside somebody s bag. It will sometimes cross the ocean or transferred on paper. In a way or the other, it will connect diverse spaces, change space itself and leave for another space. That s why I chose Alter - Space as the title. The advantage of this new concept is that anyone can start an art space instantly. The 1st series of Alterspace consists of diverse events including an exhibition curated by myself, one-day exhibition by NAKAMURA Dokou, 12 months of paintings by KONDO Keiske, which is a new form of exhibition attempted by the artist himself, linguistic endeavour by NAGAOKA Daiske and finally a talk event and lecture series of guest speakers from Korea and China. In the novel by Miyazawa Kenji Kenju Forest Park , the laughing Kenju thought it would be great to pant 700 Japan cedars. When he saw a hawk flying above the blue sky, he leaped up and clapped his hands to let the others know about the hawk. Kenju always laughed out loud whenever he encountered the beauty of the nature as he fully enjoyed it, but the kids treated him like a fool. After that, he just took a deep breath and hid his laughter in the breath. What I would like to point out is that Kenju, even though people treated him like a fool when he responded the magnificence of the nature with laughter, actually planted 700 Japan cedar for real. When we face with the essence of a thing with sincere practices, even if we are treated like fools, that laughter of people is something that we can take gladly. I hope that the praxis of Alterspace can be like planting of 700 Japan cedars by Kenju. Even if the Japan cedars didn t grow up tall, even if he cut all the branches by mistake, finally the 700 Japan cedars made a playground for kids.
