Ballethnic’s Savery Morgan Returns to Atlanta with New Passion for Dance Excellence and Community Connection

“A
s a young dancer, I really wanted to dance and not teach so much,” says Savery Morgan, Ballethnic’s new associate artistic director. “Now, I am in the community and enjoying the discovery of new talents, interacting with the genius brains of the future. I am able to support the younger generation with my passion.” Along with Ballethnic’s founders Nena Gilreath and Waverly T. Lucas II, Morgan is poised to utilize this passion. He hopes to enhance Ballethnic’s commitment to community outreach, education and artistic excellence within the Atlanta community. Morgan brings experience from tenures at Florida Ballet Dance Company, Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Breaking Barriers Ensemble, and an earlier stint at Ballethnic. Community outreach and education were a large part of his training, each city with its own needs. “In Jacksonville, it was about exposure, giving youth a chance to be introduced to different ways of expressing their feelings in a positive light,” he says. “New York offered the most diverse platform. It was more about building a community with different cultures. Atlanta embraced me in a way that built my self esteem, moral values, and extended family.”
Now back at Ballethnic, Morgan’s mission is to utilize all he learned from each city. He states, “In working with the youth of Atlanta, it’s important that I bring all these elements to the table. Sharing similarities that each dancer can relate to helps them connect with one another.” “As for artistic goals, Ballethnic has a history of working in excellence,” Morgan says. “My personal goal for the company is to have a group of elite artists that meet the classical standards and respectfully energize the ethnic styles. I want our dancers to express their voices by working with choreographers from around the world that speak to social change and the beauty of art.” “For the Academy, I would love to enhance the current curriculum so that it is accommodating and doesn’t negate our level of excellence. I would love to adopt some of the teaching from the American Ballet Theatre National Curriculum and invite instructors from around the world to ‘pour into’ our students.” “The community serves as a base for fellowship,” Morgan explains, “allowing us to work in a high level of respect and understanding of our common goal — to produce excellence.”

ith the start of 2020, a new decade and a leap year, Atlanta Dance Theatre (ADT) is proud to leap into our 38th season of entertaining North Atlanta’s audiences under the stewardship and talent of our Artistic Director, Shelley Grames. With the new year, spring brings our exciting ballet performance of Aladdin. Uniquely choreographed by Kassandra Taylor Newberry, you’ll watch this beloved tale come to life on the stage. Leap aboard the magical carpet for this performance and we’ll transport you from a far east market to a cave full of treasures and on to a royal castle where you’ll experience the adventure and the mystical tale of Aladdin. In his search for riches and the attention of the beautiful princess. Aladdin discovers a magical lamp and an extraordinary Genie who grants wishes. What will it take to spoil the plans of the evil sorceress who is plotting against him and win the heart and hand of Princess Jasmine? This ballet is filled with colorful characters, romance, twists, turns and humorous exploits. Your entire family will delight in the dazzling costumes, and enchanting performances of our remarkable group of Atlanta Dance Theatre dancers, complimented by our professional guest artists including Jonah Hooper, Nick Hagelin and Eric Nash. Join us for this magical adventure March 20-22nd as part of dual performances to be held at City Springs Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available now at SpringBalletConcert.com. In addition to our seasonal performances, ADT dancers perform at the RDA/ Southeast Ballet Festival. The many performances and training are part of ADT’s well-rounded program that also encourages giving back through volunteerism to the community off stage. These skills, experiences and opportunities serve our dancers well as they learn how to succeed in their daily commitments and balance their lives inside and outside the studio. We appreciate our families and patrons and we hope you enjoy our 2019-2020 season. Atlanta Dance Theatre’s dance company is a 501c3 non-profit organization and we encourage your donations and support. F
or over two decades, the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University has offered the world to Atlanta with its signature Rialto Series programming. This season is no exception, featuring the fiery, all-male dance troupe direct from Argentina, Ché Malambo. French choreographer and former ballet dancer, Gilles Brinas directs this powerhouse company. This must-see show is a dance and music spectacle that celebrates the unique South American cowboy tradition of the gaucho. With amazing mastery, coordination and endurance, the dancers fire out rhythms using their toes, heels and sides of their boots, along with twisting, and cross over movements that are so quick and honed, their knees appear attached by a swivel. Che Malambo’s astounding agility, precise footwork and rhythmic stomping, drumming of the bombos and singing and whirling boleadoras (lassos with stones on the end), thrills audiences around the world! Not only is the Rialto recognized for presenting stellar international artists, but also for presenting the best in jazz. This season’s roster of jazz greats include GRAMMY-winning trumpeter/composer
Terence Blanchard with his band the E-Collective; NEA Jazz Master vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater; and GRAMMY-winning saxophonist Tom Scott with the Georgia State Jazz Band; and our tribute to Georgia’s own prolific songwriter, Johnny Mercer, featuring Joe Gransden and Tierney Sutton with the Georgia State Jazz Band. There is a little comic relief too, as Washington, D.C.’s celebrated Capitol Steps comedy troupe brings an “unpresidential” evening of musical political satire, ripped straight from the headlines, just in time for election season. The Rialto is also at the forefront for presenting global music in Atlanta, having brought many big-name global artists to the stage, but few are as well-loved as Peru’s most celebrated musical artist, Eva Ayllón, the “Queen of Afro-Peruvian Soul”. Ayllón will close out the Rialto Series season on April 25, 2020. With new director, Lee Foster, at the helm the Rialto looks to the future and is reimagining its vision, mission and values to inform future programming. It is an exciting time at the Rialto — stay tuned. Tickets are available at 404-413-9849 or rialto.gsu.edu.

he Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) invites you and your family to experience the wonderful escape into the world of classical music. There is something for all ages to enjoy — from the very young to the very young at heart. First, the Music for the Very Young Series returns on February 22 with Fiesta de Musica, celebrating the musical heritage and culture of Latin America. Bring your dancing shoes and join the party in the Rich Theatre at the Woodruff Arts Center. And on May 16, Zip, Zing, Pow will explore percussion instruments of all shapes and sizes introduced through very silly versions of some of your family’s favorite nursery rhymes. Music for the Very Young is designed specifically for children 5 and under to enjoy a traditionally staged performance, while participating in exercises in melodies, harmonies and rhythms. These programs are a wonderful way to plant the seed for a lifelong love of music. For families with children ages 6 to 12, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Family Concert Series presents Presto Mambo on March 22 in Atlanta Symphony Hall. Associate Conductor Stephen Mulligan leads the ASO in a program produced by Platypus Theatre that will also explore the music of Latin America. The show will take an unexpected turn when Max — an energetic but impulsive young boy — makes his way onto the stage to help the orchestra. Soon Max is on a whirlwind adventure that takes him from the concert hall to the vibrant lands of Latin American culture where — with the help of his new friend, Mambo

chingly beautiful and tragic, Giselle is an enrapturing masterwork that remains one of the most enduring romantic ballets of all time. After Giselle is deceived by her true love, Albrecht, she falls into despair and dies of a broken heart. A woman scorned, she is destined to rise from the grave with the vengeful otherworldly beauties known as the Willis, entrapping men who unwittingly cross their paths. At once beguiling and maleficent, the Willis capture Albrecht and condemn him to dance until his death, but the power of Giselle’s enduring love protects him and ultimately sets him free. Giselle, with the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra, will take the Cobb Energy stage in March. In April at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center, Atlanta Ballet 2 presents the world premiere production of The Swan Princess featuring all of
the mystery and magic of the beloved classic Swan Lake, but fits the treasured story into a one-hour format for children that serves as a perfect introduction to ballet. Will Prince Siegfried be able to save Odette, the beautiful swan princess, from the reaches of the wicked Von Rothbart? Our one hour family ballet may be designed for our youngest audience members, ages twelve and under, but this dazzling production can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Closing the 90th anniversary season in May is Firebird. Visually and musically arresting, Firebird is an explosive production that can be enjoyed by all ages. The evening also includes Craig Davidson’s Remembrance/Hereafter, a sublime work that made its Atlanta Ballet premiere in 2018 and a world premiere by Brazilian choreographer Juliano Nuñes. With his nascent, unique style, Nuñes focuses on creating imaginative and unexpected configurations of the body formed through ebbing and flowing movement. Arís presents “Fighting Words” by Canadian Playwright Sunil Kuruvilla. In 1980, Welsh boxer Johnny Owen traveled from the small Welsh mining town of Merthyr Tydfil to Los Angeles to challenge Lupe Pintor for the world bantamweight title, a fight which ultimately ended in tragedy. One hundred men from the town accompanied Owen to watch the fight at ringside. “Fighting Words” is the story of three women who stayed behind with their hopes, fears and circumscribed lives. New York’s TheatreMania calls it “a tough-minded, compassionate play”. At 7 Stages Theatre Back Stage, April 1026, tickets at www.aristheatre.org.

ATLANTA SHOWGUIDE SPOTLIGHTS MANIFOLDS — Core Dance
DanceMax Dancewear
The word “manifold” can mean “a whole that unites or consists of many,” “a pipe fitting with several outlets for connecting with other pipes,” or in mathematics, “a continuous geometrical structure having finite dimension.” Taking on a new meaning, Rose Shields, in collaboration with Core Dance Artists and visual artist, Julia Hill has created MANIFOLDS, a new piece which seeks to explore themes of reality and how it can change. By distorting reality, this piece sparks the desire to be inquisitive. It reminds us to be ever-curious and unflinching in the pursuit of knowledge for things old and new. MANIFOLDS is about the many that make up a whole; the dimensions we inhabit and the points of view that make us individuals. For more info, visit www.coredance.org.

Emory — Honors in Dance: Intelligent Design Maria McNiece’s honors thesis is a modern dance piece inspired by Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. This interdisciplinary research project is rooted in dance, English, and theater scholarship. Through an extensive exploration of Beckett’s absurdist play, McNiece investigates the themes of existentialism and religious allegory to create a work that embodies questions regarding human agency. McNiece is inspired by how choreographers integrate text into their movement generation exercises and applies similar approaches to her own physical research. In collaboration with her dancers, McNiece strives to uphold Waiting for Godot‘s timeless themes, while also allowing them to develop in new ways. www.arts.emory.edu
