DREAMLAND FIREWORKS The most bang for your buck: Locally-owned north side business focused on saving the community money without skimping on the explosions

Believe it or not, the 4th of July is really happening this year. 2020 saw the city's annual fireworks display nixed due to the pandemic but it's all systems go this summer and that includes backyard parties and gatherings to celebrate Independence Day. Long story short, after months and months of hardship, everyone's more than ready to let off a little steam and blow some stuff up - safely, of course. Unfortunately, due to Covid and its impact on the production of goods across nearly all industries, the fireworks supply in 2021 is struggling to keep up with the demand; however, there's one locally-owned business that's bound and determined to give you the most bang for your buck, regardless. Located on Evansville's north side, Dreamland Fireworks is known for literally giving products away - or close to it, with no end of BOGOs and prices that are 50% cheaper on 99% of the items offered by competitors. Founded by local businessman David Baize back in 2007 after his annual fireworks show on Reitz Hill simply became too expensive to pull off and the only option left was to cut out the middle man, the operation quickly ballooned. All total, Baize opened up 116 stores throughout the region over the following nine years - and at one point was overseeing 10

locations during the annual summer rush for fireworks. And that's when he decided to apply the brakes. "That's how you lose touch with your customers," he explains. "I got tired of not being there on the customer service level of things. When you're not there, it's not the same." Baize rectified the customer service issue by slimming down to one location on Diamond Avenue in 2016 and got to work saving the community money. By his estimates, fireworks enthusiasts would have spent a whopping $1.3 million more over the last five years if Dreamland didn't exist. "For example, if you spend $500 at another shop, it's only going to cost you $250 or $300 here - because I do it by volume and by the unit, averaging out what is going to be sold," Baize says. "I'll sell 10,000 500 Gram Cakes and my competitor might sell 2000 for the same amount of money. I just give the customers the deal that I think I would like." Something else Baize figured customers would like is daily giveaways which he conducts through Facebook. To date, he's handed out over $60,000 in cash and fireworks to people that like comments on the Dreamland page and share with friends. Case in point, on May 31 Baize really made someone's day with a $1000 giveaway - which just goes to show that he's dead serious about making a difference by not only providing the best prices and customer service but boosting the morale of the community during these challenging times. One thing Baize particularly prides himself on is the fact that Dreamland strictly sells fireworks - only fireworks. "Other places sell knick-knacks and other things, but we're Evansville's fireworks store," he states. To ensure complete satisfaction with Dreamland's huge inventory - Baize carries over 10 major suppliers' products - 42 TVs are housed throughout the building, all displaying demonstrations of said products so customers know exactly what to expect. It's a formula for success that's put Dreamland at the forefront of the fireworks industry and resulted in a lot of happy shoppers this time of year. "There's not a single customer who's come here that says they just blew up all their money or it wasn't worth it. They say that every dollar they spent was worth it for each single bang." Dreamland Fireworks is open now through July 15.

NEWS4U JUNE 2021 | UPCOMING EVENTS

WHISKEY MYERS Lauded Americana sextet coming to Evansville in support of self-titled release VICTORY THEATRE | JUNE 18 | 7 P.M. It's finally happening. Re-scheduled more than once during the early days of the pandemic, the long-awaited Whiskey Myers show is almost here. But rest assured the tri-state's patience will be duly rewarded. Logging over 2000 performances since 2007, this truly authentic Americana band - led by singer and guitarist Cody Cannon - knows how to connect emotionally with a crowd whether in a huge festival setting or an intimate theater. "You can tell when someone is faking it," Cannon testifies, "and you can tell when it's real." Amen. Building a career in the music industry the old fashioned way, Whiskey Myers has steadily gained a remarkably strong foothold in the Americana and country genres with a series of acclaimed releases, beginning with 2008's Road of Life. By the time of 2016's Mud, a number one success on the iTunes country chart, the guys were in the driver's seat, riding high on the single "Stone" and selling out venues all over the U.S. and beyond. The band then debuted atop the country and Americana/folk sales charts - and number two on the rock chart - with 2019's self-titled/self-produced album featuring instant classics such as "Die Rockin," "Kentucky Gold," "Houston County Sky" and "Bad Weather." Currently in the studio working on a follow-up, the six members of Whiskey Myers are primed and ready to get back on the road and bring the music including some new tunes, fingers crossed - to the people once again after a prolonged layoff. Don't miss this sure-fire electric performance!

For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

CLEAN BITE LIFE Healthy Cooking with Lindsay Rasure If you want a light refreshing cake then this cake is for you! You can even make the cake beforehand and decorate later. The cake is gluten free and lower carb compared to traditional vanilla sponge cakes. The base of this cake is almond flour and makes for a nice nutty flavor with healthy fats. You can choose lemon or orange zest to steal the show. I made it with lemon, and it did not disappoint!

FRUITY ALMOND FLOUR CAKE CAKE INGREDIENTS: • 4 large eggs • 1/2 cup maple syrup or honey • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract • 1/2 tsp. baking soda • 1/4 tsp. salt • 1 whole lemon or orange zest • 1 3/4 cups almond flour (6 oz.) • Butter or coconut oil for greasing • Fresh berries of choice and mint if desired WHIPPED CREAM INGREDIENTS: • ½ c. heavy whipping cream (preferably organic) • 2 T. powdered sugar • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract CAKE DIRECTIONS: 1. Place beaters and a bowl in the freezer, if making whipped cream, for at least 30 minutes. 2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place cake pan on parchment paper, circle with a pen and cut out the round. Grease bottom and sides of the pan with butter or coconut oil really well. Place round inside the cake pan and grease it too. 3. In a large bowl, add eggs and whisk well. Add maple syrup, vanilla extract, baking soda, and salt; whisk until well combined. Add lemon zest and whisk. 4. Add almond flour and mix with spatula until well incorporated. 5. Pour batter into previously prepared cake pan and bake on the middle rack for 23-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. 6. Remove from the oven and let cool in a pan for an hour or so. Using a flat spatula carefully separate edges of the cake from a pan and transfer to a cooling rack. If you are decorating with whip cream the cake has to cool off completely. If not, sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired, cut into 10 slices, and enjoy. DIRECTIONS FOR WHIP CREAM: 1. Get the beaters and bowl out of the freezer. 2. Add the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla. 3. Beat on high for several minutes until stiff peaks form. 4. Store leftovers in the fridge for 2-3 days. (We like to dip fruit into the leftover whip cream!) This cake recipe is adapted from www.ifoodreal.com/healthy-almond-cake/

GROOVE KENNEDY Barber and Brown's hip-hop alter-ego, Groove Kennedy just released "Bubblegum," a new single that captures the chill vibe of GK. The early recordings of this Clark Kent-inspired project can be heard on Kelsey Gang.

CE N'EST RIEN Translated from the French as "it's nothing," Ce N'est Rien is the project name for an Austin folk singer - originally from Evansville - who's currently recording his debut album for the label in Texas.

OLD TIME BOXING Fronted by JRAD VP Ryan Connors, Old Time Boxing delivers a one-two punch of folk and rock that the band of locals is duly honing for a fulllength Halloween release.

MADAME STIR KRAZY A London-based artist that Barber went to college with back in the day, Madame Stir Krazy is in the process of rebranding herself after some dodgy years in the music industry. Her sound, which is evolving, incorporates hip-hop and dance elements.

GRAY LADY GHOST A sort of rap collective featuring Barber and Madame Stir Krazy, Gray Lady Ghost is primed to record in full in the future but you can check out a snippet of what to expect on the new compilation.

BANNER JOHNSON Straight out of North Carolina, Banner Johnson is a new JRAD band set to make its debut on the upcoming compilation. Reportedly, the lead singer is fantastic.

GAY ENOLA GAY A Tampa Bay-based EDM/trance/drum & bass project, Gay Enola Gay gets the award for the best name on JRAD's roster, alluding to the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb in warfare. Translation: war is gay.

SHORTY BIG A Louisville rapper with a debut album pending, Shorty Big bypassed the compilation and went straight to the real deal. Look for his full-length solo release in the coming months. "The world is a better place when we're all creating." - Michael Barber, May 2021

CUSTOM GUITARS The art of craftsmanship: Local musician finds greatest joy in the designing and building of instruments It's a lonely pursuit, as they say, requiring countless hours of intense concentration - not to mention a creative vision and true gift for woodworking. And that's why only a select few guitarists in the tri-state have delved into the art of craftsmanship, content to leave the designing and building of instruments to those with the right stuff - such as Newburgh's Joe Papin, a longtime scenester who's both played in popular area bands (Joe's Garage, anyone?) and recorded solo. The multi-talented musician actually began dabbling in the production of guitars way back in the 80's via an apprenticeship under a luthier but primarily spent his time doing tech jobs - repairs and setups - during his years in Los Angeles and New York. Some of his famous clients? Oh, just band members of Alice Cooper, Lita Ford, Goo Goo Dolls, Rick James and White Lion. But that sort of work - despite its cool factor - doesn't always pay the bills. So Papin eventually settled into a more reliable job here in the tri-state and lived the family life while rocking on the side. But dreams never die. In 2019, Papin started doing repairs, restorations and custom work as a prelude to building a prototype electric guitar, officially launching Papin Custom Guitars in 2020 - a labor of love that attracted one of the area's most revered musicians, Theo Akai, who signed up to be the first owner of a specialized JP six-string. "He loves it - he's always posting about it," Papin notes with great appreciation. "And when Theo participates in the NAAM (National Association of Music Merchants) shows in California and Nashville, it's great to have him seen holding my guitar." Other musicians also showed interest - even from as far away as Maryland - all eager to secure a customized instrument, including a new bass guitar that Papin designed. Just one caveat: due to the extensive work involved, turnaround time is generally 12 months. "I always have four or five [instruments] in various stages of completion," Papin says. "I have a lot of people who want them - I can't make them quick enough." While continuing to process orders, Papin is simultaneously investing time and effort into designing a small body, fully acoustic guitar prototype and a new electric model with input from Akai. His dedication to expert craftsmanship is remarkable - but there may come a time when he'll need to reach out for help. "If I get a bunch of orders I'll have to hire people to do the labor intensive parts - but it will be custom made," he ensures. And that's the key. Asked by a friend why someone would buy a guitar from Papin when they can just get a Fender, he responded, "Well, you can drink Budweiser or a craft beer - it's not better, so to speak, but more individualized."

with Gavin Gaddis Welcome to the Podcast Corner, your source for some of the best and most inventive podcasts around. INSANELY HAUNTED (COMPLETE)

This podcast fills an oddly specific niche but does so in such a wonderful way I have to share it with the world. Each week hosts Cassie and Max discuss an episode of the long-running and famously ridiculous Travel Channel paranormal investigation series Ghost Adventures. Each episode talks about a different GA outing, highlighting hilarious moments and never shying away from mercilessly mocking its faults. Be it manipulative editing, crackpot pseudoscience, or host Zak Bagans’ tendency to bully ghosts when he’s done bullying his own crew, Max and Cassie are here to make it hilarious.

insanelyhauntedpod.wixsite.com UNAIRED! (ON HIATUS)

There are a lot of TV shows that never make it to air - or, even worse, are pulled before everything that’s been filmed has made it to air. On each episode host Ed Bachta brings on a guest or two to discuss the first, and sometimes only, episode of a short-lived television project such as the Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure animated series nobody watched, the attempt to port Turner and Hooch to TV, even that one time Bradley Cooper played Anthony Bourdain in a comedy adaptation of Kitchen Confidential. Full disclosure: I’m in the podcast twice, so I’m a smidge biased. unaired.podbean.

S-TOWN (COMPLETE)

I’ve recently been writing a postmortem of S-Town, going over each of the seven episodes with a finetooth comb and, honestly, this show’s embarrassing. One of the most-downloaded podcast launches on record (mainly because most podcasts don’t release their downloads publicly), S-Town is the result of a New York-based reporter getting incredibly attached to the idea of inserting himself into a deepfried southern atmosphere to interview quirky characters. Then he outs a dead queer man for the sake of a couple more twists to the show. A shiny, polished train wreck of an ethically-challenged show that’s impossible to look away from. stownpodcast.org

PARTY OF ONE (WEEKLY)

Each week host Jeff Stormer takes another person on a two-player tabletop roleplay adventure, using a different system each time. In a podcasting world where 90% of airtime is taken up by Dungeons & Dragons and a further 9% is that one time The Adventure Zone played Monster of the Week, Stormer’s tidal wave of games for every mood helps players and games find each other. Stormer’s eternal excitement for TTRPGs, his website packed with resources, and his Twitter that regularly boosts indie TTRPGs are all worth having in one’s digital diet if they want something more than what Wizards of the Coast has to offer. partyofonepodcast.com

HYBRIDS, SINGLE DADS AND PREP-SCHOOL TEENS: JUNE IS ALL ABOUT THE CHARACTERS FATHERHOOD [NETFLIX 6/18]

Kevin Hart has proved his comedy chops time and again. But in Fatherhood he's showcasing his grounded yet sensitive side, too, playing a single father raising a young girl in the 21st century after her mother, the love of his life, dies during childbirth. What I love about the trailer is that instead of depicting a wacky rom-com, this is a sweet and tender emotional rollercoaster with flashes of humor from the trials and tribulations that raising a child brings with it - from punching a clown when you get scared in a fun house (even though as a parent, you’re supposed to be the protector) to trying to croon your inscrutable baby to sleep. As a single mom raising a four-year-old going on 14, I can’t wait to embrace the joys and sorrows of fighting to make a better future for your child. This tear-jerker premieres June 18 on Netflix.

ELITE - SSN 4 [NETFLIX 6/18]

Netflix could have ended this sultry Spanish drama after most of its titular cast graduated in the explosive yet bountiful season 3 finale. But like many teen shows across the globe, writers thought of a fun trick to keep fan favorites yet also bring in fresh blood by having some of the characters forced to repeat their senior year. Itzan Escamilla, Miguel Bernardeau, Arón Piper, Omar Shana, Claudia Salas, and Georgina Amorós are all returning in their iconic roles. But four new cast members are joining, threatening to rifle with the already damaged dynamic of the group while also spicing things up. I can already tell from the paparazzi photos of the cast on set over last summer wearing their masks and eating catering that they are doing just that. There is already a new flame and I can’t wait to see it ignite on June 18. I also hope there is room for cameos from some of the original cast. I wonder whose murder we’ll be following this season?

SWEET TOOTH [NETFLIX 6/4] This fantastical adaptation of the Jeff Lemire comics will be like nothing we’ve ever seen, transporting us to a realm of wonder as Gus, a half boy/half deer played by Legion’s Christian Convery, travels with cantankerous companion Jepperd, played by Game of Thrones' Nonso Anozie, after leaving the forest society he grew up in. And while this is a dark fairy tale, with evil forces trying to kill the young boy and other hybrids just trying to survive, it’s also a sweet story about embracing all of the different parts of you - both human and magical. Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr. also executive produces the series. It’s the perfect popcorn piece for the whole family. The adventure starts June 4 on Netflix.

CITY OF EVANSVILLE CONSIDERS PROJECTING TIKTOK VIDEOS OVER THE OHIO RIVER INSTEAD

While acknowledging nothing would signal a return to normalcy more than a fireworks display on the 4th of July, local government official Jay "JJ" Jayhawk told a large crowd amassed outside the Civic Center today that the City of Evansville must let go of tired traditions in order to stay relevant in the 21st century. "Sure, big explosions in the sky are cool - we all get a kick out it," Jayhawk noted. "But the time has come to do something ultra sick, something GOAT level. And that's why we're proposing to project TikTok videos over the Ohio River this Independence Day to show the rest of the state that the southern tip of Indiana is totes GUCCI!" Amid confused murmurs, he continued to hammer home just how "lit" such a display would be, repeatedly failing to incite a chant of "YOLO" from the rapidly thinning throng. "Imagine looking up to the stars and seeing gigantic clips of wholly untalented people filming themselves in a desperate plea for attention - now that's what freedom's all about!"

AFTER TRI-STATE PSYCHEDELIC ROCK FANATICS DEMAND THE LLOYD EXPRESSWAY BE RENAMED 'PINK FLOYD EXPRESSWAY',

LOCAL EMO MUSIC FAN CLUB INSISTS FALL FESTIVAL BE RE-CHRISTENED 'FALL OUT BOY FESTIVAL' In a blatant case of one-upmanship, Emo4Life - a local emo music fan club dedicated to championing the overly-sensitive - put forth a resolution today to change the name of the Fall Festival to 'Fall Out Boy Festival' in a nod to, all things considered, the genre's least annoying band. It comes on the heels of last month's ploy by TSPRFC (Tri-State Psychedelic Rock Fanatics Coalition) to rename the Lloyd Expressway. "We just couldn't let a bunch of weed-smoking nerds unable to express all the feels and frequently cry for no reason steal the limelight like that," Joey Hayman, head Emo4Life dude, stated while dabbing the welling tears in his perpetually sad eyes. "Also, someone said some sh*t or other about 2021 marking 100 years since the inception of the festival - so the time is now to, uh...uh...rebrand it...sorry, I'm getting emotional just thinking about it."

After all, with no less than 10 rival pest control companies in the area, there was little room for error. So Jack and Charlie took great care in ensuring that the McMahon name stood for fair-minded, quality service - from the initial call to the finished job. And their efforts more than paid off. By 1999, the ever-evolving business had upgraded from its Columbia Street origins to a proper building at 1605 Theater Drive on Evansville's east side. But the biggest change was yet to come. After nearly 40 years at the helm, in 2010 Jack relinquished the reins to Charlie, appointing his son president of McMahon Exterminating. This shift at the top signaled the company's move into the 21st century with the embracing of computers and the creation of a website that greatly increased their community reach. Consequently, business has effectively quadrupled over the last decade. To keep up with the demand, Charlie

EXPLORING SMALL BUSINESS

with Elaina Adams

It’s easy to start feeling a little insecure about your body when you’re constantly comparing yourself to the overly edited models on Instagram. Let’s face it, a lot of women don’t feel comfortable enough in their own skin to post selfies, much less be photographed nude. But

sometimes being put in a seemingly uncomfortable situation, like posing for a boudoir session, is precisely what a woman needs to feel sexy again. Eleanor Elaine Photography is Evansville’s go-to boutique for boudoir, and let me tell you, these steamy sessions are as much fun as they are empowering. Eleanor started her photography business the day after she graduated college. She felt confident that’s where she needed to be, and she remains dedicated to making it her lifelong career. It’s important to Eleanor that her clients’ photos are authentically them. Boudoir shoots should not only portray a person’s “flaws” in a new positive light, but also accentuate their best qualities. She’s received a lot of positive feedback on Instagram from people reaching out and saying things like, “It means so much to me seeing beautiful women on your page, who have the same body type as me.” To Eleanor, that’s the most rewarding part of her job: watching the confidence shift in her clients after a shoot. Although I had never done anything like this before, I wanted to schedule a session for myself. However, the day of the shoot I was both excited and nervous. It’s not easy being put in a vulnerable position, no matter how safe and respected you might feel. But once Eleanor and I started chatting, all that fear drifted away. Now, a lot of women might be skeptical about being photographed in such a suggestive manner. But this is art, and her studio is a judgment free zone. Uhm, sorry, Planet Fitness. Frankly, I don’t think anyone has ever hyped me up so much in an hour, and to the point where all my concerns about my physical appearance were put at ease. Oh, Eleanor, you are good! In my opinion, Eleanor is not only a photographer but a self-esteem miracle worker. After seeing my pictures, I’ve felt a new level of confidence and pride. All in all, my shoot was immensely therapeutic, which is something I never would have dreamed would come from being in front of a camera. My boudoir images will forever serve as a souvenir from such a wonderful experience and as a constant reminder to always embrace my femininity. I would highly recommend treating yourself to a shoot with Eleanor. Tell her Elaina sent you!

The thing with Sampson is that he demands to be an only child. We aren’t sure how he does with dogs, but other cats? No-go. He hates them. But he’s wonderful with people. So wonderful that he suckered the Director and Assistant Director of Operations into letting him live in their office for a few weeks. (Full disclosure though: he is a messy officemate.) Because of all these quirks, Sampson is still squatting in an employee office. He’s like an ornery teenage son who won’t get out of the basement. So somebody come get him! BITZY

VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

Southern Illinois resident Jennifer Mason has a love for animals in her blood. Her mother, who now serves as a show judge for the American Kennel Club, was a professional dog breeder/handler back in the day and taught obedience classes in the family's backyard when they lived in Tennessee. Tellingly, Mason notes that she was always partial to mutts rather than the fluffed-up show dogs that her mom cared for - a preference that would become even more prominent in the years to follow. Once on her own, Mason made it a point to surround herself with animals - both cats and dogs - but at the time that she married her current husband of eight years there was no feline presence in her life. However, her stepdaughter Evey - described as a "crazy cat lady in training" - put Mason on notice that she wanted to rectify that situation. And so when Evey's birthday approached last March, a light bulb finally went off. "My husband and I were trying to figure out what to get her - and she had recently been to the River Kitty Cat Café where she fell in love with Bitsy, a standoffish cat that disliked most people but stayed by Evey the whole time," she recalls. "We checked with her brother Steven - who's allergic to cats - to see if he'd be willing to take a Claritin. We just ultimately decided that if he's miserable then he'll take a pill [laughs]." When the big day arrived, Evey came home to find cat paraphernalia all over the house - and Bitsy waiting for her. Needless to say it was quite the celebration! Still, there was the small matter of how Bitsy would react to Mason's elder dogs. "I have a passion for senior animals," she explains. "I have a 13-year-old Pitbull and 12-year-old Shih-Tzu mix - and now a 14-year-old Pomeranian who was my grandfather's dog before he passed away." Not surprisingly, Bitsy wasn't terribly enamored with her new furry friends but Mason's mother-in-law suggested finding a feline compatriot to ease the transition. And that's how Bert, a laidback, long-haired orange Tabby, came into the picture. Rescued from a local southern Illinois shelter where Mason volunteers, he has helped Bitsy get comfortable with her new surroundings. Best of all, the two have become true pals, playing together and integrating into the family quite perfectly.

powerhouse vocals once again on her seventh studio album. It was released in conjunction with her incredibly popular YouTube docu-series following her recovery from addiction. The titular track is a knock-out and comparable to other ballads from the singer like "Skyscraper" and "Sober." Yet again, she is truly giving us her raw and authentic self, exploring the brutal truth of overdosing and almost dying with lyrics like, "Almost made it to heaven/ It was closer than you know/ Playing with the enemy/ Gambling with my soul." "Anyone" is another incredible ballad that gives you goosebumps. Noah Cyrus helps bring in a blend of beautiful melodies on the vocals of the folksy "Easy" while Ariana Grande gives us a dark fantasy with "Met Him Last Night." "My Girlfriends Are My Boyfriend" with Saweetie is like a hip-hop pop mash-up I never knew I needed while "What Other People Say" with Sam Fischer is a gripping and gorgeous track. And while the star doesn't need any back-up, these special guests only help solidify this as a true gem of an album. - Marisa Patwa

ALY & AJ A Touch of the Beat Gets You Up on Your Feet... Sunset Sound Pop sister duo Aly & AJ have been a staple on my iPod shuffle since I was 13 and they first made me realize the importance of crushing on a boy with blue eyes with "Something More." While the Disney stars have been on hiatus for 14 years, they are truly delivering a killer comeback with their fourth studio album. "Don’t Need Nothing" has an electric dance vibe that makes you smile, accompanied by a cheeky, spirited music video of the singers eating fresh strawberries and toasting with champagne at a sunset picnic before breaking out into a food fight. Sounds like a great way to start summer to me. "Slow Dancing" is a sweet love song while "Pretty Places" is the perfect track to kick off your June roadtrip playlist. "Symptom of Your Touch" gets your heart racing and hopeful with Aly slaying with some gritty vocals. Even though I’ll always cherish these two, their more mature tracks give off a more coffeehouse vibe and can't quite replace the idyllic pop-punk tunes of my pre-teen years. But I'm glad they are back at it and I hope we don’t have to wait another 14 years for more new music. - Marisa Patwa

Julia Michaels has been sitting in the Gomez, Justin Bieber and Demi Lovato for years. And finally, four years after releasing her chart-topping single "Issues" - which many stars wanted for themselves - she has dropped an incredible debut album. "All Your Exes" is a hauntingly beautiful song with a saucy music video of the singer hunting down her boyfriend's past loves. "Love is Weird" dips into the messiness of being in a relationship and the echo-y beats make you feel that dizzy spell relationships can induce. "That’s the Kind of Men" will give you major boss babe feels with lyrics like, "Childhood picket fence/ Smells like confidence/ Raised with a little more common sense/ Isn't always on defense/ Sits up straight and knows how to take a compliment." And "Summer Before You" relays an epic story of love, with angelic vocals and whip-smart lyrics like, "You can't spell drama with consonants/ And I admit, I usually was the cause of it/ Now here we are, you got me changing all of it." What a natural poet. - Marisa Patwa

GOJIRA Fortitude Roadrunner Progressive metal band Gojira is a French quintet with a huge following in the U.S., Europe and Latin America. They have a committed fanbase and well-attended live performances. They’ve been nominated for several Grammys and are a staple of summer concert festivals. Fortitude, Gojira's seventh studio album, shows a band that continues to experiment and evolve despite their success. These gents are not afraid to embrace melody, harmony, and even indigenous instruments to create new sonic textures - a departure from their bone-crushing metal roots. Don’t get me wrong - the technical skill, off-time signatures, blast beats and heaviness are still at the core of what they do. However, on Fortitude they intertwine driving rhythms with interesting vocal flourishes, melodic interludes, shifting tempos and even pop sensibilities. The end result is an album that is more accessible than their previous offerings. Gojira tackle familiar themes - the destructive impact that humans have on the environment, spirituality, humanity as its own worst enemy, history and politics. Stand-out tracks are “Amazonia,” “Another World,” “The Trails,” “The Chant” and “Hold On.” Definitely worth the download or better yet, buy a physical copy and support the artist! - Matt Alschbach

NATALIE BERGMAN Mercy Third Man Records I decided to take a listen to Mercy, the debut solo effort by Chicago singer-songwriter Natalie Bergman, because it was promoted as a Christian album and I found the artwork appealing. To my surprise, I am absolutely in love with it. I find the bulk of Christian music to be boring, uninspired, and hollow; however, Bergman is everything a Christian artist should be in 2021. Though the music on Mercy recalls older styles (it sounds like The Supremes singing gospel), the songwriting is fresh and timeless. Bergman is personal and heartfelt as she uses her faith to overcome the grief of losing her parents. Mercy is a wonderful, joyous record that can be enjoyed by anyone - and that’s what a good Christian artist should strive for. - Russ Finn

WEEZER Van Weezer Atlantic Records If you read my review from a couple months ago, you know that I didn’t care for Weezer’s first album of 2021, OK Human. It’s the worst. But now Weezer are back with a new release just four months later. It’s not great, but Van Weezer feels a lot more inspired and fun. Sure, there are atrocious lyrics like “pump it up into me, please daddy” (seriously, WHAT?), and the album cover is the band's worst to date (a remarkable feat if you look at their album covers from 2005 to 2009), but Weezer sound like they are having fun! Rivers Cuomo may not have the ability to write good lyrics anymore, but he brings the riffs, licks, and hooks to make Van Weezer their most rocking album in nearly 20 years. - Russ Finn

CAKE POP Cake Pop 2 Mad Decent One of my absolute favorite releases of the last few years is 1000 gecs, the debut album by hyper-pop goofballs 100 gecs. Having discovered its upbeat bliss in late 2019, I frequently relied on it for a pandemic pick-me-up. Dylan Brady, one half of 100 gecs as well as a notable solo artist, returns this year with a new release from another project. Cake Pop is another group project of Brady’s, this time working with a handful of other artists apart from 100 gecs’ Laura Les. Cake Pop 2 continues Brady’s consistent streak of fun pop production, but it’s a notable step back from his work with 100 gecs. If you’re a fan of Brady’s solo work or a fan of 100 gecs, Cake Pop 2 is worth checking out, but the songs are forgettable in comparison to his other work. - Russ Finn

FAKE DAD Old Baby EP Self-Released The Brooklyn electronic duo (and romantic item) guides us through a musical experience that dives into self relationships and how upbringings persuade you to rethink the future - while keeping the sappy, romantic fare far away from the center of attention. Andrea Verona’s distorted yet lax vocals mixed with Josh Ford’s production engineer a lavished alternative chill-hop masterclass that keeps up the surprises, like adding unexpected trumpet to the track “Knit Sweater” and a haunting yet groovy synth and bass in the nostalgic “Breakfast in New York.” Elsewhere, songs like “Pretty/Ugly” will make you recall the awkward teen years of self-deprecation and self-doubt, but it's somehow presented with a bright, enlightened spin. Verona and Ford create a soundscape that reminds one of a classic arcade game coming to life, but with the promise that you will finish it victoriously, a sensation achieved through means of faux samples, purposely detuned Rüfüs Du Sol synth, and with a hint of Miguel new wave R&B swagger. While not completely reinventing the sphere of this genre, Old Baby definitely sets the bar high for others wishing to follow in Fake Dad's footsteps. - Freddie Bourne

Blues with Bragin BOB CORRITORE Spider in My Stew VizzTone Records Blues harmonica wizard Bob Corritore returns with Spider in My Stew. The album opens with “Tennessee Woman” featuring Oscar Wilson of The Cash Box Kings on vocals. Wilson sings about wanting to visit his woman while bassist Patrick Skog and drummer Alan West give the song a Latin influenced beat. “Big Mama’s Soul Food” showcases Corritore’s harmonica while Sugaray Rayford sings about the joy of Southern cuisine. “Wang Dang Doodle,” a cover of the Koko Taylor classic, is a toe-tapper. Corritore’s harmonica is the icing on the cake. “Drop Anchor” features Alabama Mike on lead vocals and offers a nice contrast to L.A. Jones’ guitar. The ballad “Sleeping with the Blues” offers Johnny Rawls a chance to sing about missing his woman. John Primer’s vocals and guitar on the classic “Mama Talk to Your Daughter” works well with Bob Welsh’s piano playing. “Why Am I Treated So Bad” contains melancholy lyrics that match perfectly with guitar from Kid Ramos and Corritore’s harmonica. Fred Kaplan’s piano on “Soon Forgotten” offers a nice complement to Willie Buck singing about a woman. A cover of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released” closes the album. - Paul Bragin

JUNE BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. GOOSE ISLAND LOST PALATE

GOLDEN ROAD HAZY PUP IPA

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.25

Pours a slightly hazy straw color with distinct notes of grapefruit on the nose. On the palate there are some notes of tangerine. Well balanced, and very tasty. Best low cal IPA I’ve had yet. This is a truly session-able IPA.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thick white head crowns this hazy strawcolored IPA. Pine scents from the hops hit the nose, with some citrus coming through later. More pine notes coat the tongue first, with carbonation flooding the mouth and the hops lasting for an extended period of time in the finish. Despite the lower calories and alcohol content, this beer packs a lot of flavor. Pair it with Cheddar cheese or a variety of spicy foods.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This beer pours a hazy straw color with a grapefruit aroma. The hops are pretty sweet and easy to drink. With only 105 calories and a low ABV of 4%, I guess this is considered a light IPA. The flavor is pretty good but I think there's a little room for improvement. Overall, this is a solid session IPA.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5

This is a hazy IPA enhanced with mango and cinnamon flavors. It pours a thin white head over a hazy orange body. Mango is pronounced on the nose and mango and cinnamon dominate the palate. The natural hop flavors are a bit overpowered, though it still has a nice light hop bitterness that brings it all into balance.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.75

A thick white head rests on this cloudy IPA and takes time to evaporate. A decent amount of cinnamon fills the nose. The tasting seems muted, but the cinnamon returns and sticks around during the long finish, along with mango flavors. Pair it with a fruit salad. Brewed in honor of an employee battling cancer who could only taste mango and cinnamon, Goose Island donates a portion of the sales to support cancer research.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

This beer pours a hazy straw color. I'm usually a Goose Island fan but this one is just a little better than ok. It has a familiar pine aroma and the standard tropical flavors of many IPAs - though it does feature an interesting peach presence. Overall, Lost Palate seems a little watered down but the ABV of 6.9% makes up for it.

LAGUNITAS SUPER CLUSTER

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5

Pours a golden hue with a nice head. This has typical grapefruit notes on the nose, though that is where it stops being typical. As the name would suggest, this has a big hop presence. It has pronounced bitterness on the palate that a seasoned IPA drinker will enjoy, but an IPA initiate might find excessive. It has a decent malty backbone to match its bitterness. At 8%, this IPA packs a decent punch. A little bitter for my tastes, but a solid beer.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A white head forms on this IPA, evaporating somewhat quickly, leaving behind a golden beer. A significant citrus presence from the hops controls the nose. More bitter hops hit the tongue with the first sip, making their presence strongly felt in the long finish. People who enjoy IPAs will definitely want to try this one. Pair it with foods like barbecue, salmon, game meats or cheese like Monterrey or pepper jack.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

This is a clear amber-colored IPA that's very sweet with a healthy ABV of 8% - which is the best thing about it. Especially since the amped-up alcohol isn't that noticeable in the taste. There's a bit of hops bitterness, though, followed by a fruity maltiness that doesn't quite measure up to the top-notch IPAs.

HOP VALLEY BUBBLE STASH

tropical flavors come through on the palate. While not particularly remarkable, I find Bubble Stash to be a very well-balanced and very drinkable IPA.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5 PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4

Bubble Stash pours a hazy, golden hue. Notes of grapefruit dominate the nose, while lots of juicy,

A thick white head tops this hazy IPA and eventually dissipates. A generous burst of citrus hop notes dominates the scent, with pine scents also present. The hop flavors continue with the first sip, with the citrus and pine going back and forth in the finish. Pair it with burgers, barbecue, seafood and salads.

You can also drink it while sitting on the couch and watching a ballgame with your best friends.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

This is a golden-colored beer with a pleasant citrus aroma - mostly the smell of pineapple and mango. It's crisp, clean and smooth and pretty drinkable even with an ABV of 6.2%. Also, the hop bitterness is minimal; however, the overall taste isn't on par with the other beers this month.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

Q: I was injured in a car accident but didn't initially feel any pain. It was actually a week

later that I started to experience symptoms in my neck and back. Is it too late to see a doctor and potentially file a claim considering that I didn't report any injuries at the time of the accident?

A: First and foremost, your health is the most important thing following a car accident. So, if you are hurting and feel the

need for treatment then by all means seek medical care. Secondly, you can still file an insurance claim even if you did not initially feel pain or report you were injured. Indeed, sometimes after a wreck your adrenaline is flowing and you believe

the soreness, stiffness and discomfort is normal after a wreck and will ease in a short amount of time. However, if you begin

to feel pain or the discomfort gets worse and does not go away, then it certainly is reasonable to consider a visit to your primary care physician.

In terms of the legal claim, an insurance company or defense lawyer often argues that a “gap” in medical treatment must mean you were not hurting during the “gap” in medical care and that if you are hurting now, the cause of your pain must be something other than the car accident. Likewise, it is always important to follow your doctor’s advice and

recommendations. If you don’t follow your doctor’s advice, the insurance company and defense lawyer will say the reason you are still hurting is your own fault for not following medical advice.

Again, your primary concern is your health. And so, you need to make choices that are best for your health.
