2020

This month, a very deserving group of tri-state women will be honored by the Junior League of Evansville. For nearly a century, the JLE has been dedicated to empowering women to be civic leaders through an effective interactive development program, helping to change societal views and upend patriarchal norms. The organization will shine a bright light on this mission by hosting the Women's Conference & Luncheon on October 29 at the Old National Events Plaza. This 3-tiered conference program is specifically designed to inspire and empower women at every stage of their leadership journey. In addition to workshops and a vendor's expo focused on women's interests, careers and leadership, the JLE will present the Woman of Empowerment Award as well as name the 2020 Top 20 Women in Business in the Tri-State Area. All of the honorees have proven themselves to be an undeniable force for good in our community, serving selflessly and inspiring others to do the same. Without a doubt, assembling all of these incredible women in one room is bound to make a big statement that should reverberate for weeks to come and draw attention to all the progress being made. The keynote Speaker for the conference is Erin Joy, founder and CEO of the consulting and executive coaching company Black Dress Partners which helps guide businesses facing a variety of challenges - from underperformance to fast, unexpected growth. She will share her expertise and earmarks for success as documented in her co-authored book Anatomy of Accomplishment: Your Guide to Bigger, Better, Bolder Business Results. Gold butter. Once you’ve tried Kerry Gold butter you won’t go back to any other kind. Also the recipe calls for coconut sugar. Coconut sugar is easier on the glycemic index (think less blood sugar spike) compared to white sugar. No, it doesn’t make things taste like coconut. I use coconut sugar for all of my baked goods!

Ingredients: •

½ c. softened unsalted butter (1 stick)

¾ c. coconut sugar

1 egg

1 tsp. vanilla

½ tsp. baking soda

½ tsp. salt

1 c. unsweetened cocoa powder

¾ c. mini semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions: 1.

Preheat oven to 350ºF.

2.

Using a mixer, mix together the butter and sugar.

3.

Add the egg and vanilla and mix until combined.

4.

In a separate bowl stir together the baking soda, salt, and cocoa.

5.

Add dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until combined.

6.

Stir in the chocolate chips (or any other mix-ins you’d like)

7.

Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Using a cookie scoop, scoop around one dozen cookies.

8.

Bake for about 10 minutes or until they look done.

9.

Once they are cool store the cookies in the fridge. They will turn amazingly fudgy and taste the best straight out of the fridge!

JORDAN MILLER & THE DEAD LIGHTS 9 0 'S-IN F LU E NC E D ROC KE RS S I GN W ITH IN DI E ON A I R RE C ORDS , RE A DY R EL EASE OF S T E LLA R NE W E P

"We'd never played for three hours before and it kicked our asses," guitarist Austin "Golden Locks" Campbell recalls about the final show Jordan Miller & The Dead Lights

played

just

before

the

pandemic rained on everyone's parade. The unusually long set at Chaser's Bar & Grill back in March underscored just how much effort the four members put into every performance - it's full on from note one. Particularly for frontman Jordan "Dog Whistle" Miller (so nicknamed for his ability to hit ridiculously high notes) who famously rocked so hard on WEHT's Local Lifestyles last year that his hat flew off midstrum to reveal a shock of turquoise hair. But despite not being able to harness that energy of late - it's now been nearly five months since the Chaser's gig - Miller and company, including bassist Brody "Peppa Flakes" Morris and new drummer Joey "Polo Joe" Lynn have not exactly been resting up; rather, they've spent their free time consolidating a record deal and recording a stellar new EP that's sure to make some noise.

Leading up to the pandemic, JMDL were on a roll, having won the 97XFest Battle of the Bands in Owensboro last November which awarded the guys an opening slot for the Black Stone Cherry & The Lacs show at the OCC. Then just when things looked bleak heading into 2020 after the departure of another drummer - terrible timing considering their new record label boss was soon scheduled to check JMDL out at a Bokeh Lounge show - Lynn messaged to express his interest in taking over behind the kit. He nailed the audition and proceeded to learn 12 of the band's songs in just the first week. Consequently, the record label showcase went off without a hitch. "We killed it," Miller notes emphatically. Lynn's stature in the band only increased when they convened with local producer Steve Tyner postlockdown to record the follow-up to last year's Late Nights with JMDL EP. Reportedly, the new kid on the block took only two hours to lay down the drum tracks - a true mark of his talent. Miller, Campbell and Morris followed suit, bringing their absolute best to the studio sessions. The resulting production, Waking Up with JMDL, reflects "coming to terms with realizing faults and bad things that happen and pushing forward with a stronger understanding of who we are." Musically and vocally, it's another big step up with the band crafting potential hit after rocking hit, giving nods to 90's icons like Collective Soul and Live on "Forget," "Pretty Girl" and "Tranquility" while also venturing quite successfully into Fall Out Boy territory on "Heartache & Apathy" courtesy of an über catchy Campbell riff. Yet it all remains uniquely JMDL thanks to the band's unmistakable chemistry and Miller's emotive delivery. If there's any justice in this world, the new EP - out August 3 - will catch fire with the backing of Indie On Air. Stay tuned and look for JMDL at Lamasco Bar & Grill on 8/29!

The Sluice story began back in March of 2019 when former Heritage Hills classmates Bobo Bohannon and Zach Ortiz reconnected musically, having previously played together in a high school band. Chris Dawson, a fellow classmate, was brought into the fold on drums and eventually Mitch Angle - the odd man out as the only North High School graduate - slotted in on bass, providing the perfect melodic counterpoint to the aggressive six-string riffing of Bohannon and Ortiz. By all accounts, there was instant chemistry. "We built up a set of originals pretty quick and within a month we were talking about booking studio time," Ortiz notes.

NEWS4U AUGUST 2020 | MUSIC

LOCAL MUSIC ROUNDUP RECENT UPTICK IN CREATIVE ACTIVITY CONTINUES WITH MORE NEW RELEASES FROM TRI-STATE ARTISTS AND BANDS Here in the tri-state there's seemingly no end of exciting, radio-ready new releases from all genres being dropped on a monthly basis. In particular, this latest group of singles and EPS demonstrates just how much talent Evansville and the surrounding area is home to and surely it's only a matter of time before the national spotlight comes shining down on our local music scene. Check out these releases on all streaming sites. For more info, follow these artists and bands on Facebook.

SLUICE S/T EP

06.26.20

Pop-punk perfection is a good description of Evansville's Sluice. The fledgling band managed to squeeze in some recording time with producer Steve Tyner right before the pandemic hit and the resulting EP - featuring four tracks full of attitude and energy - will put a mighty spring in your step. Influenced by the likes of Alkaline Trio, Saves the Day and Blink 182, this debut studio effort captures Sluice in fine form on the hook-filled lead single "Woke" highlighted by vocalist Bobo Bohannon's dramatic mood swings. "27 Down" and "Stimulation (Can't Get No)" are total rockers while "Nikki" is a minute-plus of delightful desperation.

DEKAR JUSTUS

"LET MY LOVE FALL"

07.03.20

He goes by Dekar Justus for solo outings but many of you know him as Dekar Baker, former drummer for Osiella and current leader of Good Company, among other tri-state musical alliances and associations. The multi-talented twenty-something has started to test the solo waters with a couple throwback R&B singles of late; June's "On Your Mind" is still racking up YouTube views and just a few weeks ago, Baker released the sultry follow-up, "Let My Love Fall," which highlights his gift for sumptuous melodies and layered vocal harmonies that recall the likes of Stevie Wonder. Seriously, he's damn near in the same league and well on the path to greatness.

SHAWN NEEDHAM "OUROBORUS"

07.10.20

The tri-state's guitar wizard returns with his most adventurous single to date. Needham followed up the May release of "Wife" - a gritty jazz-funk piece - with June's "Son" and "Remy," the former a gorgeous acoustic instrumental backed by mournful strings and the latter a down and dirty jazz-funk romp complete with both mood and time signature shifts. But he's really outdone himself with "Ouroborus" - which, in keeping with the title, mines Middle Eastern influences to stunning effect with periodic solemn narration from Needham. It's unlike anything he's previously produced - ominous, eerie and full of dread; perfect for a film soundtrack, no doubt. Most impressive is the unexpected orchestral breakdown midway through. Needham keeps surprising and stretching out creatively. Fantastic.

KYLE PAISLEY "ONLY ONE"

07.13.20

Just about a year ago, Paisley claimed his status as local pop prince with the release of "Kisses," an infectious ear-worm of a song that paid homage to the Purple One as well as more current influences, including Foster the People. Now he's back with "Only One" which floats in on a dreamy, heavily-reverbed chord progression that recaptures the sound of the mid-80's in its own unique way. Over a funky, mid-tempo groove Paisley pines for relationship bliss: "I'm on a mission to find the one/That will end the search for the muse of my life." Your search for pop goodness ends here.

JORDAN MILLER & THE DEAD LIGHTS Waking Up with JDML

08.03.20

Recalling the very best of 90's-era rock, JMDL return with the excellent follow-up to their debut EP. Over the course of four extremely well-written tracks recorded with producer Steve Tyner, the guys take everything up a notch, positioning themselves as a potential break-out band - especially now with the backing of Indie On Air Records. Songs like "Pretty Girl" and "Heartache & Apathy" are primed for chart success while "Forget" and "Tranquility" offer a deeper, darker side that's equally engaging. Catch their upcoming set at Lamasco on 8/29.

with Marisa Patwa AUGUST OFFERS UP SETH ROGEN DOUBLE TROUBLE, SPIES PREVENTING WWIII AND REBELLIOUS TEENAGE MUTANTS

Seth Rogen’s boisterous laugh permeates every scene he's in and as a moviegoer, it’s a pretty joyful experience. So, after all of the tragedy that has come with 2020, it will be nice to chuckle along with his new HBO MAX film, An American Pickle, out August 6. In this time-jumping comedy, Rogen, as a 1920s migrant laborer, gets trapped in pickle juice that preserves him for 100 years and when he wakes up in present day Brooklyn, his life is gone and his only family is a long-lost relative, also played by Rogen. I'm not making this up; there’s an IMDB page and everything to prove it. And while it sounds silly, it’ll be a delight watching Rogen play the dual characters. Tenet is set to be another one of Christopher Nolan’s widescope, mind-bending action films. This one centers around a skilled spy, played by Black KkKlansman’s John David Washington, faced with the ominous task of preventing WWIII. And with giant turquoise waves crashing on ships, spies gliding up buildings, car chases and flips in the neon night, explosions and gorgeous boat rides in scenes shot across Denmark, Italy, Norway, Estonia and India, the cinematography is truly gorgeous with an epic score to match. The film also features a wickedly talented cast, including Robert Pattinson and Kenneth Branaugh - and of course, the obligatory Michael Caine cameo. While Tenet’s ’s release has been delayed twice due to the pandemic, it will finally see release on August 12. I, for one, am tickled to see Pattinson play a whimsical Russian with a penchant for crashing planes. The New Mutants has also gone through some pandemic delays, but is officially due out August 28. The long-awaited X-Men movie is said to be a unique standalone with a darker tone than previous offerings from the popular franchise. The film also has a cast featuring three of young Hollywood’s finest - Maisie Williams ((Game of Thrones), Charlie Heaton ((Stranger Things) and Anna Taylor-Joy (Split) - so hopefully, this comic movie will live up to its hype. These talented actors play teenage mutants coming to terms with their powers as they are trapped in a secret, seemingly treacherous facility. Considering this superhero film is chock-full of creeping horror and mutant powers, it’ll be a fresh take on the X-Men formula.

THE LOREMEN (WEEKLY)

Each week comedians Alasdair Beckett-King and James Shakeshaft alternate sharing some of the most oblique and obscure local legends they can find. From ghosts that hold 15 minute conversations to a vegetable growing in the exact shape of a lamb, they dig up some of the most stunning pieces of forgotten folklore the UK has to offer. Between the wild historical tales and the hosts’ quick wit, The Loremen is a welcome change of pace from the usual urban legend podcasts that take themselves too seriously. It fully embraces just how bonkers accounts of what people in the 1600s genuinely believed can get. loremenpodcast.com

DEADBEATS, INC. (BETWEEN SEASONS)

An audio fiction series from director Aisha Casey, Deadbeats, Inc. follows single mother Kassidy Jones as she starts a unique investigative firm. Along with several close friends, Jones launches a firm exclusively for taking on cases from single parents with deadbeat exes, convincing said exes to pay child support by any means necessary. Sporting hilarious writing, excellent acting, and gorgeous sound design, Deadbeats is a wonderfully-executed adult comedy. deadbeats.podbean.com

NULL/VOID (BIWEEKLY)

An audio fiction from Piece of Cake Podcast Network created by Cole Burkhardt, Null/Void follows Piper Lee, a depressed 20-something stuck in a dead-end corporate job. That is, until a mysterious stranger named Adelaide warns Piper not to get on her usual bus, which is then caught in a massive accident. She quickly discovers a group of friends with a common bond: they’ve all been saved by Adelaide. What follows is a mystery of corporate espionage, ruthless billionaires, and possibly a rogue artificial intelligence. Much like Deadbeats, Null/Void isn’t afraid to go dark or adult in tone when need be. nullandvoidpod.

DUNSTON CHECKS MIN (WEEKLY)

This is likely one of the weirdest movie discussion podcasts you’ll ever find. Two friends, fresh off a podcast covering the 1991 Super Mario Brothers live action film minute-by-minute, decide to do the most logical next move: produce a podcast in which each episode discusses one minute from the 1996 family comedy Dunston Checks In. Each episode pairs the given minute with a movie that’s complementary in some way. 88 episodes focusing on both the micro (a minute of a movie ostensibly about an orangutan in a hotel) and the macro (a full feature-length film). benviewnetwork.com/dunston

City Declares The Lloyd Expressway A Cone-Free Zone For All Eternity In a stunning move that has uplifted the spirit of the entire community during such a trying time, Evansville mayor Lloyd Winnecke held an impromptu press conference in front of the Civic Center to declare an immediate and everlasting moratorium on all Lloyd Expressway construction, citing "the incalculable stress and suffering that city drivers have had to endure for so many years - not to mention the disturbing visions of orange cones that torment us all in our sleep each night." Upon hearing these unexpected yet inspirational words, the assembled crowd - all spaced six feet apart and donning various styles and colors of face masks - began weeping uncontrollably as if granted a last-minute commutation of a death sentence. Mayor Winnecke was then lifted up on the shoulders of several citizens and paraded about while members of his administration desperately attempted to pry him from their grip for fear of Covid-19 contraction.

SUBARU LOVES TO CARE

featuring Parri Black

President & CEO, Youth First, Inc.

The heart and soul of Youth First and its mission to strengthen youth and families in our community by providing evidencebased programs and services that prevent substance abuse, promote healthy behaviors and maximize student success, Parri Black is all about caring for kids and helping them reach their full potential. But she's hardly gone it alone over the last 16 years. A well-respected organization, Youth First receives financial backing from some of the tri-state's most high profile employers and foundations and is run by a highly-dedicated staff with invaluable support from a host of amazing volunteers who share the same passion for doing good work that impacts all of us. What inspires you to be a part of Youth First? Probably it's my children and my grandchildren; I care deeply for them. And I see other children who maybe don't have the same advantage of a caring adult in their lives and I want them to have that. Thankfully, Youth First can provide that. Why is it so important for Youth First to have the investment of the community? The issues we address - preventing addiction, improving mental health, helping children develop into our future workforce - we all get a return on that investment; that's why

we encourage everyone to get involved. We're building strong futures together. Can you share a specific example of a child that Youth First has helped? So there's one young lady who came on Youth First's radar in 4th grade. Unfortunately, both of her parents were dealing with addictions and she needed the extra support of a Youth First social worker in her school. And during that period of time, that social worker was really a caring adult in her life who helped her cope and see the possibility of hope and a future. She went on to do well in school - and now she is working as a teacher in our community helping young people succeed. What excites you about the future of Youth First? We are recognized by the state of Indiana as a model organization that they would like to see replicated across the state. We're now in 11 counties and over 90 schools. So we know that there's more need and I think that Youth First will continue to build and grow the capacity to meet that need and impact many more lives. For more info, visit romainsubaru.com. BACON VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

At the age of 15, Melissa Jordan was heartbroken when her precious Golden Retriever Lab Mix puppy was hit by a car; she swore right there and then that she'd never get another animal until life allowed for a place of her own with a fence. And so after securing said arrangement in 2010, Jordan adopted Cain, a Beagle Lab Mix from the Spencer County Humane Society. Three years later she welcomed a fun-loving cat named Blackberry from the VHS into her home which was followed by a second cat named Flower who sadly passed from feline leukemia. It was a difficult time but Cain and Blackberry continued to be best buds so there was harmony in the home which helped with the grieving process. And so did Dixie. Last year, Jordan's neighbors decided they couldn't keep their Schnauzer Beagle Mix puppy and so Jordan stepped up to the plate, giving little Dixie the forever home she deserved. Which ultimately shifted the dynamic of the household. "Dixie and Cain became playmates, and we felt that Blackberry needed a playmate," Jordan recounts, "so last March my son and I were just going to go in and play with the cats at River Kitty Cat Cafe. If we found one we liked, we might get it. Bacon was in this cage and he just stuck his paw out and touched my son, started purring. I said, 'This is our cat.'" Despite the long-held belief that male cats have difficulty bonding, Bacon and Blackberry became fast friends, playing and rough-housing together, even cleaning each other. In fact, they even politely share treats, never fighting over rewards. Yet, Bacon definitely has the upper hand on loveable quirks, including his obsession with Q-tips and cardboard toilet paper rolls which he thoroughly enjoys chewing on and dragging all over the house. He also refuses to drink water from anything other than Jordan's husband's coffee mug which reads "Peace Love Bacon" - hence, the name, "which just seemed perfect." And speaking of perfect, Jordan is truly pleased with the symmetry at work in her household these days. "Funny thing is that we had Cain who's all black and Dixie who's kind of ginger - then Blackberry who's all black and now Bacon is a ginger color. And they all get along really good."

THE PROS & THE CONS with Barold Hume

Nostalgia Radio What is a social media argument worth? What is gained from heated dialogue in the online realm? Are the spoils from these conflicts tangible? Can people find common ground after such disputes? How can we as a nation rise above the divisiveness and fly like a unified eagle surveying the land of the free? Which frames the concern of this opinion piece: amplitude modulation is far superior than frequency modulation. There. I said it. The cards are out on the table, and the cat is out of the bag. The warmth of AM radio in the Seventies bathed the listener in a celestial hush akin to the glory of stovetop popcorn. Mmmm. The radio tubes’ orange glow cast a dusty definition to the turn of a Gordon Lightfoot phrase that to this day bewilders FM jocks. I mean, how could it not? They have tried! Try this at home: wheel out your furniture-sized tube radio from any closet in your dwelling, then find your favorite Sony AM/FM cassette Walkman. Set the tube radio to an AM station and the Walkman to a FM station. Take off the headphones, Cauliflower ears, and crank the sound up. Which sounds better? The tube apparatus. Why? Amplitude modulation, precisely! I must

admit, sometimes my ears deceive me, and I, too, confuse one for the other, or the other way round. In this day of sound bites and redacted copy, the lines get blurred; accidents can and will be made. This whole contrivance is in jest truly, but may be analogous to the entrenched opinions and attitudes at play in our contentious nation. Nostalgia and sentimentality, two great foes of acceptance or change, paint a highly stylized picture of the fiction of our pasts. To my ears, AM radio will forever live in a superior world than that of frequency modulation simply because I fell asleep to AM radio - the warmth of the radio sound reflected in my nest of covers of my bed. The music may or may not have been better written or more skillfully played by the musicians, but to my recollection, and maybe more importantly, the safety I felt in my experience of listening to the radio will forever remain a favorite memory. Could the same be said for some fictitious “America” our intrepid leader is imploring us to find? The few short years of the Kennedy Administration will forever be linked to “Camelot,” a kingdom of unparalleled perfection. Remember how eloquently that ended?

So a small majority of Indiana's GOP state delegates took what they thought was the safe bet and slotted Todd Rokita to run for Attorney General. By a final vote of 52% to 48%, and after several rounds of caucus voting, Rokita edged out incumbent Curtis Hill. The embattled Hill was accused of groping several women at a party in 2018 and would see his law license suspended for 30 days as a result. Hill has denied any wrongdoing but the accusations were bad enough to scare off some party affiliates.

MEMO TO GOP: ROKITA IS NOT THE ANSWER

Rokita's slim victory now pits him against former Evansville mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel. Some analysts have already said the Democrats should wave the white flag but the GOP might have just stepped on a landmine with their pick - only it won't blow until

NEWS4U AUGUST 2020 | MUSIC REVIEWS

BLACK EYED PEAS Translation Epic Records

3.5/5 The Black Eyed Peas have made their mark as party beat music icons since the early 2000s, and their eighth studio album is just as hype, with fire features from Becky G, Shakira, J Balvin Tyga, French Montana and more. Any screenwriters need a song for their next rom-com meet-cute scene? Then “Girl Love Me” featuring Shakira is a great dance song you can’t help but bop to. The "Hips Don't Lie" singer and will.i.am mix together well with the right amount of spice. Shakira also does a Spanish verse which adds a bilingual punch. “Mabuti” is a playful beat and “Duro Hard” with Becky G has a cool club sound to it that will have you feeling pretty good when you’re just getting into that dance floor freestyle. For “Where is the Love?” fans out there, “News Today” feels like a natural follow-up, but focused on the pandemic with, “It’s a ghost town coast to coast/we’re just people that’s tryna cope/from different sides with different strokes/livin’ different lives from different tribes/but everybody’s in the same boat.” And while I adore Fergie and will always admire the feminine ferocity she brought to the Peas, the trio still deliver a fire album without her. - Marisa Patwa

JUICE WRLD Legends Never Die Grade A/Interscope

4/5 While the SoundCloud rapper is now floating in the clouds - Juice Wrld passed in December from a drug overdose - the 21-year old was able to deliver a breathtaking send-off with his posthumous album, an honest portrayal of his self-destructive behavior, with lyrics like, “Sit back in my chair, relaxing and reclining/ He has not a care in the world, no, I’m lying/Takin’ all these meds to the face got me flying/Takin’ all these meds to the face got me dying” in “Conversations.” In an upbeat twist, “Tell Me U Luv Me” has some major boy band vibes, with a boppin' verse from Trippie Redd. Need a song to throw some stacks of cash to? “Hate The Other Side” hits the spot. It also has some great collaborations with Marshmellow, Polo G and The Kid Laroi. My favorite: “Life’s A Mess” featuring Halsey. It’s catchy and sweet - like a pixie stick being poured into your ears. Bonus: “Wishing Well” makes you ache with, “I can't breathe, I'm waiting for the exhale/Toss my pain with my wishes in a wishing well.” - Marisa Patwa

JOHN LEGEND Bigger Love Columbia Records

4.5/5 John Legend’s seventh studio album is a perfect example of his unwavering ability to entertain and deliver an exceptional product. “Conversations in the Dark” is a soft, romantic song that ripples through your heart with a gooey intensity. And with YouTube comments revealing couples tying the knot to this song, it’s clear Legend's hit the mark with Cupid’s arrow. “Actions” is a sexy, steamy song that leaves you with a delicious smile curling on your face as he gets into the chorus. Lyrically, he admits to souring something sweet with, “She gave me all of her love, then I waste it/I wrote a new song, then erased it.” He also delivers the perfect song to coat that quarantine ache with “Bigger Love.” Check out the music video which features homemade clips from all over the world. And just when you think he couldn’t perform another iconic duet, he brings out “U Move, I Move,” infused with the infectious melodies of Jhene Aiko - “If you ever hurt, then I'm gonna bleed/But I'll pick you up and put you back on your feet.” Chills. - Marisa Patwa

CORIKY Coriky Dischord Records It's been nearly two decades since post-hardcore heroes Fugazi called it quits - or went on an indefinite hiatus, to be exact. And yet fans of the legendary Washington, D.C. band are still clamoring for a reunion that will surely never happen. Musical activity amongst the four members has been somewhat sporadic through the years but bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty recently formed the fantastic instrumental trio The Messthetics with guitar wizard Anthony Pirog and now singer/guitarist Ian MacKaye is back with wife Amy Farina (the pair previously released three albums as The Evens) and Lally powering the rhythm section under the curious Coriky banner. For those who followed The Evens - which saw MacKaye strumming a baritone guitar to Farina's jazz-inspired beats this new configuration simply amps things up with occasional distortion and more bottom end. Tracks like "Clean Kill," "Hard to Explain," "Have a Cup of Tea" and album highlight "Inauguration Day" come across like a friendlier Fugazi but the proceedings drag a bit when Farina takes over lead vocals on "Say Yes" and especially closer "Woulda Coulda." Her habit of elongating every last syllable tends to grate. - Johnny Fletcher

Blues with Bragin ANIMAL COLLECTIVE Bridge to Quiet Domino Recording Animal Collective is back! Indie rock’s biggest weirdos have been making great music for 20 years, but the second half of their career has been dominated by their more middling material. Though there have been highlights like 2017’s Meeting of The Waters EP and the 2016 single “Mountain Game,” their new EP Bridge to Quiet may be the most akin to the classic Animal Collective sound that fans came to love between 2004 and 2009. In fact, if the EP was released 10 years ago, it almost certainly would be canonized as a classic. The four songs on Bridge to Quiet are all rather lengthy, but no patience is required to enjoy these meditative and atmospheric pieces. If you like Animal Collective, don't hesitate to check out this phenomenal EP - it's one of their best releases. - Russ Finn

THE BURPS Brick Walls & Other Things Self-Released Don’t be misled by the band name - The Burps are not a garage punk band. You won’t find lightning fast power chords or goofy lyrics here. Instead, Brick Walls & Other Things, the debut album by the Nashville DIY band, showcases unashamedly pure rock and roll. And they’re great at it. This seven-song collection would sound incredible in a stadium or festival setting as The Burps consistently and expertly bounce from post-grunge to stadium rock to prog rock with the greatest of ease. It’s almost hard to believe how underground these guys are when Brick Walls sounds so careful, polished and intentional. With incredible talent and production, The Burps sound like they would fit right in with any modern rock radio station. - Russ Finn

100 GECS 1000 gecs & The Tree of Clues Dog Show/Big Beat/Atlantic Records One of my favorite releases from last year was 1000 gecs, the debut album by the experimental pop duo 100 gecs. If you think their band name and album title are ridiculous, wait until you hear their songs. 1000 gecs is a hyper album that seems to slam about 60 different styles of music into a quick 23 minutes. The album frantically bounces back and forth from every electronic genre imaginable while dropping the occasional black-metal freak-out or pop-punk guitar riff. I think it’s brilliant. This updated version is the new remix album featuring 100 gecs’ contemporaries and peers applying their own oddities to the already odd songs. While not as good as the original, it's certainly an exciting and original listen. - Russ Finn

SAM JOYNER When U Need a Friend Self-Released Born and bred on Chicago blues, Sam Joyner kicks off his latest New Orleansinfluenced release with “Must Be Jelly,” a soulful tune with a great horn introduction. The sax solo near the end of the song is terrific. “Goin’ to Chicago” has something of a Zydeco or polka feel to it. Joyner sings about his return to the Windy City which he hasn’t seen in many years. The drum solo in the middle of the song is masterful. “Hard 4 Tha Money” discusses the difficulties of making a living. The keyboards in the middle of the song are a nice touch. The rolling piano at the start of “ThemBluez” is perfect. Joyner sings about his introduction to the blues at the clubs in Chicago. The piano keeps up the intensity throughout the song. “Breakin’ Up Our Happy Home” sees the piano slowed down and accompanied by a guitar reminiscent of John Mayer. Joyner sings about his woman cheating. The classic blues piano sound on “Natural Born Luvah” fits in well with the bass and lyrics about being good to your woman. “Onions Ain’t the Only Thing” offers a nice change of pace with a synthesizer. For more info, visit samjoyner.com.- Paul Bragin

POPA CHUBBY It’s a Mighty Hard Road Self-released A veteran musician straight out of the Bronx, Popa Chubby returns with another electrified set of scorching blues that opens with “The Flavor is in the Fat,” an ode to his favorite foods that boasts some rocking guitar. The title track discusses the difficulties of the working life with a great guitar solo. “Buyer Beware” features solid drums from Steve Holley as Ted Horowitz sings about using caution when purchasing vintage goods. The slower ballad “Let Love Free the Day” gives Horowitz a chance to show off some funky bass skills. “The Best is Yet to Come” sees Horowitz singing about persevering through difficult times because of a brighter tomorrow. The heavy guitar on “I’m the Beast from the East” matches well with the lyrics about hailing from New York City. The Latin-influenced instrumental track “Gordito” offers sultry guitar reminiscent of Carlos Santana. “Lost Again” is a melancholy tune about needing to find purpose. The album ends with a cover of Prince’s “Kiss,” a funky bass-driven track with masterful harmonica playing by Horowitz. For more info, visit popachubby.com. - Paul Bragin

NEWS4U AUGUST 2020 | BEER REVIEWS

AUGUST BEER REVIEWS This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. GOLDEN ROAD WOLF PUP IPA

PLATFORM BASIC LAGER

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4

This lager pours a thin white head over a bright golden hue. There is a distinct sweetness on the nose that follows through with a bit of malty sweetness on the palate. The malt is expertly-balanced with a light hoppiness that leaves a smooth finish with no bitterness. Add a decent amount of carbonation, and this is a real thirst quencher. As someone who is not a lover of lagers, I found this one to be very enjoyable. This “Basic Lager” really excels.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.5

This session IPA pours an ample white head over an almost clear golden hue. The six different hop varieties deliver notes of pineapple on the nose and offer a healthy dose of citrusy grapefruit on the palate. It finishes with a slight bitterness, again reminding you of its grapefruit undertones. This light session IPA comes in at 4.7% ABV and yet doesn’t fall short on flavor, making it perfect for enjoying a few on a hot summer day.

A decent white head rests on this lager and evaporates slowly. A nice balance of malt and hops dominates the scent profile. A refreshing burst of carbonation coats the tongue during the initial tasting. The malt and hop flavors remain and offer a pleasant taste. Despite the name, this basic lager is a vast improvement over many of the mass-produced lagers on the market. Pair it with steaks, burgers or grilled chicken.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

This beer pours a clear golden color with good carbonation and a little grassy aroma but nothing overpowering. Overall, it's nicely balanced and easy to drink. I like the sweet malts with the light hops. Nothing fancy but a solid lager.

58 | AUGUST 2020

A good white head tops this IPA and never totally dissipates. A burst of fruity hops used during brewing controls the scent. The first taste of the beer begins with some malt notes, but the hops follow soon after and remain during the long finish. People who enjoy IPAs will want to seek out this beer, especially during the summer. Pair it with spicy dishes like Mexican food or your favorite barbecue.

I usually shy away from overly hoppy beers, but I guess they are growing on me a little. I can smell flowers, pine scents and it's a little earthy to the nose. It's a lighter IPA and the hops don't hit you over the head as soon as you drink it. Golden Road always puts out a solid beer and this one falls in line.

SARAH RUCH - 4.5

Here's a fairly complex - and truly enjoyable Scottish ale that's full of flavor, encompassing strong coffee overtones, roast malts and chocolate malts along with a hint of smokiness. Perhaps best of all, a light hops feel perfectly balances out the sweetness of Old Chub that's driven by an absolutely delicious caramel aftertaste. Fans of Founders' Dirty Bastard may want to check this one out. Both are heavy beers that go down incredibly smooth.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A thick tan head crowns this dark brown ale when poured in a tulip glass and stays for a long time. The nose contains an abundance of malt scents. The malt flavors stay with the first sip and into the finish, along with hints of coffee, cocoa and smoke. People who enjoy heartier beers will want to try this. Pair it with a variety of meats like beef, lamb, venison, game birds or crème brulée.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a real nice Scottish style ale with a deep rich coffee color. I can smell a little of the coffee and it has the coffee and chocolate flavors. As a bonus, it's got an 8% ABV which gives it a pleasant warming effect when you drink it. I'm a big fan of this beer.

CIGAR CITY MARGARITA GOSE the standard IPAs and lagers, Margarita Gose is a truly tasty beverage that's perfectly-timed for the hot month of August. The combination of lime and orange zest with a hint of salt and tartness makes for a flavorful drink that's lightbodied and finishes nicely. Sip it by the pool for maximum enjoyment.

Some beer drinkers may turn their nose up at this latest Cigar City creation, but for those of us who need a sweet and sour break from

A thin white head forms on this gose beer and quickly disappears when poured in a pilsner glass. A decent amount of fruit fills the nose along with the smell of beer. Sour fruit notes immediately hit the tongue with the first sip.

This beer might be a good choice for drinking during the sweltering months of later summer. Pair it with shrimp pad Thai, salads with citrus dressing, raw oysters or grilled tilapia.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 2.5

This is exactly what the can says. I can taste the salt and it's extremely bitter. I let a friend of mine who's a true connoisseur of the margarita have a taste but she was not impressed. She agrees that this gose is not a very drinkable beverage. But keep in mind that I've never been a fan of sours. Try it for yourself.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
