LADY A FORD CENTER / AUGUST 29 / 7 P.M.
Guitarist Dave Haywood talks What a Song Can Do, killer choruses, idolizing James Taylor and more One of country music's biggest acts since forming in Nashville in 2006, Lady A has routinely dominated the charts with a varied run of unforgettable singles - everything from upbeat party anthems and sweet ballads to mid-tempo lovesick rockers that echo the band's fixation with Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles and Tom Petty. And there's no better example of the latter than "Need You Now," the 2009 number one smash that completely changed the lives of Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood - and to date has racked up hundreds of millions of streams. Countless
huge
hits
followed,
including fan favorites like "Just a Kiss," "Downtown" and "Bartender," as well as armfuls of industry awards solidifying Lady A's stranglehold on the country genre. Now, after waiting out the pandemic, they're back with What a Song Can Do Chapter One, the first part of an ambitious project that speaks to the challenging times we all faced during the days of Covid. But ultimately, like the title says, it's a tribute to the power of song. And after being forced to cancel their 2020 tour, the band is pumped to play live again, eager to perform both new tracks - including the 80's-influenced lead single "Like a Lady" - and all the classics. "I don't know when I've been this excited to play before," guitarist Dave Haywood shares.

Haywood kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of the show at the Ford Center. WHY DID THE BAND DECIDE TO SPLIT WHAT A SONG CAN
DO INTO TWO SEPARATE RELEASES AND HOW DID THE THREE OF YOU CHOOSE WHICH SONGS TO INCLUDE ON EACH CHAPTER?
We obviously had to cancel our tour for our previous album, Ocean. And so we just put our heads down and started writing. And there was a lot to write about - you know, the fear of not knowing how long we're going to be in this thing [the pandemic], figuring out what we want to stand for as people. We want to make sure that we stand for love and unity and inclusion. We tried to pour all of that into the songs. So we had a good batch of 50 or 60 songs probably by the end of the year. Once we recorded a selection of them - we had about 14 songs - we kind of had this moment where we were like, consuming a large batch of music is just a little exhausting. If we were to just throw 14 songs out there, or even more than that, I just don't want people to forget about the last 10 and only listen to the first four. And it's sort of part thematic, about wanting to have some more time-sensitive material on the first chapter. But I think the second batch really rounds it out in a certain way. There's a really exciting collaboration on the second half - actually with a few artists which we've never done before which is a big old party. Later this fall we'll release the next seven [songs]. "CHANCE OF RAIN" ON THE

Our whole career that's been the goal. You know, even on "Need You Know" there's a way that we stacked all the acoustics which was an old Crosby/Stills/Tom Petty thing. So for our whole career we've really loved..."I Run to You" almost just has that pulsing, straight, you know, standard strumming acoustic thing a little bit, too. Anytime we can do that - you're talking about our top three idols: Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles and Petty. We're all circling all that stuff and musically those guys...it feels so timeless to me, that kind of music.

I think the acoustic especially thematically with the lyrics being about a dad handing down an old Martin guitar - it just kind of fit right in. treated - not just as musicians but as people in general, which was actually more important to us. So yeah, we fell into the fraternity almost immediately. Your finger-picking style of playing the electric guitar is quite unique. Was it based on the playing style of the blues legends that you idolized? And did you start out playing with a pick? I tried but I was terrible at it. I couldn't keep the pick in my hand, so I ended up just playing with my fingers long before I even discovered, you know, the blues world. And then once I saw John Hammond play and Freddie King and Brownie McGhee and Fred McDowell and Hound Dog - they all played that way. Probably because they all started out on acoustic blues. So I got on the inside track of that because that was just a style that felt natural to me. Back in the day - the 80's, in particular - bands like The Destroyers and Huey Lewis & The News and artists like Bruce Springsteen all incorporated horns into their sound. But horns have all but disappeared in modern music. What happened? People like myself and Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny, our background in music - people like Little Richard and Wilson Pickett and, you know, other artists like Sam the Sham & The Pharaohs with the greatest sax solo of all-time in "Wooly Bully" - they influenced us. I didn't want to put a harmonica in the band because I thought it would put us in the era of just another blues band. You listen to the sax solo in "Locomotion" which is great; the sax solo in "Lucille" by Little Richard is just off the radar. That was just something that was natural to us [using horns]. I think some of the youngsters coming up think that getting a saxophone, that's "old fogy" stuff. They all want to plug in and be Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, which I don't blame them for. But that might be a reason they kind of stay away from that. Even after 50-plus years of rocking, you still play with so much joy on stage. Is there anything in life - apart from your family that gives you as much joy as strapping on an electric guitar? Yes...[long pause]. The other thing that gives me a thrill like playing... well, I kind of keep that to myself [laughs]. If you know what I mean, pal? There are other things that match up to that - it only takes about seven or eight minutes. But hey, what can I tell you?

FISH
Electrifying blues-rocker talks Kill or Be Kind, bringing people together through music, reaching the next level and more LINCOLN AMPHITHEATRE / AUGUST 28 / 6:30 P.M.
Just an hour northeast of Evansville, the stunningly beautiful Lincoln Amphitheatre - a nationally-recognized venue that books an impressive variety of artists, bands and tribute acts - is back up and running this summer with a full schedule

up a slew of awards from prominent blues organizations and publications. And still it seems like Fish is just getting started. 2019's Kill or Be Kind was hailed as her best collection of songs to date, incorporating keys and synthesizers to play off the Memphis soul foundation and create a dynamic blues-pop hybrid. In turn, the fresh sonic approach pushed Fish to craft some truly inspired lyrics and vocal melodies that stick with you long after. IT MUST BE A RELIEF TO GET BACK TO TOURING SEEING
AS YOU WERE UNABLE TO FULLY PROMOTE KILL OR BE KIND DUE TO THE PANDEMIC.
For me, Kill or Be Kind kind of got shortchanged. It's weird for me because I kind of started moving on [from that record], but when I look back on it, I think about how we recorded it, where we recorded it and the stories that came about. You know, I really wanted to do it in Memphis because Memphis is a special place for me - I think Memphis is the heartbeat of that album. I definitely took chances with my songwriting, you know, tried to push it in some different directions. Especially, like, texturally with my guitars. I really focused on how I could layer these songs and on writing hooks. Yeah, I definitely put my all into Kill or Be Kind. THE TITLE TRACK SPEAKS TO PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS BUT IN A BROADER SENSE IT SEEMS TO APPLY TO THE

faith in the people; I think we can pick ourselves up and just, I don't know, act right [laughs]. WELL, YOU'RE DEFINITELY DOING YOUR PART TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER THROUGH YOUR MUSIC AND AMAZING LIVE PERFORMANCES.
Well, thank you. I do my best, but, you know, I play music and I try to keep it to that [laughs]. But I definitely know that there is, like, a responsibility as a performer because we bring people together. It's about uniting people and this connection at a live show - which we found during the pandemic can't be replaced. I was worried; we definitely tried. But that experience of a live show, it brings people together. I feel like that's my job and that's what I'm here to do - to make people feel better through music. UNLIKE A LOT OF MODERN MUSIC THAT OFTEN FLATLINES, DYNAMICALLY SPEAKING, YOUR SONGS TAKE THE LISTENER ON A JOURNEY - BOTH MUSICALLY AND VOCALLY.
I'm always pushing myself to kind of push it into a different direction. If I write a song that feels kind of old school, I try to figure out a way... how can I modernize this and make it sound different and make it sound unique and like me? If I write a song that sounds super future poppy, then let's use some more classic instrumentation to root it into this sound. It's kind of case by case, song by song. "Bulletproof," for instance - I wanted it to feel like this kind of hill country, old school, fat posse song, but I wanted to put it to, like, a really contemporary, really industrialized beat that we could break apart like a DJ remix. I don't know, man, I just want everything to sound new and different and like me. FANS ARE ALWAYS INCREDULOUS THAT YOU'RE NOT THE BIGGEST ACT ON THE PLANET. BUT YOU'VE CLEARLY BEEN GETTING MORE
POPULAR WITH EVERY RELEASE. TO YOUR MIND, WHAT WOULD IT TAKE TO GET TO THE NEXT LEVEL?
Well, the music industry has changed so much, even in the last five years. Man, I used to think that if I could just get on the radio, radio, radio. But the thing is that even the people that I love and admire that were on the radio five, 10 years ago, wouldn't be on the radio today because the world has just changed so much. Now it's all about pure data - your streaming data. I guess my goal always is to have a song that resonates with a lot of people - and that's a hit regardless of whether it's on the radio or not. I think enough people listening to it on their own and streaming it would push it to radio. I think it's just about getting to the people - the people are the ones deciding who gets to go on to that next level which is really powerful and really cool.

Your friends and family will be begging for more if you serve this appetizer. It’s fresh, savory, full of nutrients, and very filling! Feel free to eat more and make it a completely satisfying meal.
If smoking your own salmon get that started first. We smoked fresh wild caught sockeye salmon at 225 degrees for 45 minutes, but any packaged smoked salmon would work.
2.
Prepare the crostini base by slicing your favorite baguette into 0.25” thick pieces. I used my own homemade 72-hour fermented sourdough for the bread (contact Clean Bite Life for more information or to purchase). This recipe works well for approximately 36 total slices.
3.
Place a small amount of butter (I prefer Kerrygold Brand Grass Fed butter) on each slice and toast the bread slices in a 450 degree oven for 7-10 minutes or until golden.
4.
In a large bowl whisk together olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic, and season with salt and pepper.
5.
Add in the cucumbers, tomatoes, arugula, smoked salmon, and feta cheese and gently mix together. Season with more salt and pepper to taste.
6.
Add a dollop of the salad mixture onto each crostini slice and serve immediately.

DEW DIRT
And though Jones is admirably all about representing our fair city, he may be headed for bigger things with the release of his two most recent singles - both produced, mixed and mastered by Moe Z MD, an industry great who's worked with such iconic artists and bands as the late Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, New Edition and Morris Day. Which is to say that the quality of the tracks more than meets today's hip-hop standards. But most importantly, Jones' writing lives up to the production, showcasing incredible range as he swings from the irresistible R&B flavor of "Love Come Down Pt. 2" (feat. Moe Z MD, William Brown IV, LowKeezy & Warchi7d) to the menacing paranoia of "Watch the Company You Keep." Throughout, you can hear a slew of 80's and 90's influences, including Dew Dirt favorites

KYLE PAISLEY Evansville singer-songwriter returns with a breezy pop jam for the summer
One of the tri-state's most gifted songwriters, Kyle Paisley is back in a big way with "Just Friends," a finely-crafted three minute pop jam that's tailor-made for the summer with a breezy, hummable melody. The sugary chorus, which features some sweet John Mayer-esque guitar strumming and a jazz-funk chord progression, lays out the case for keeping a relationship simple rather than risk losing a valued personal connection: "We don't have to be lovers/ We can just be friends/ Either way I'm gonna love you/ Right until the end." Paisley expands, "there are a few key people that the song is about, but I take from my entire life of having relationships with people." Like Paisley's previous singles - "Wishing," "Mine," "Only One," "Dance All Night" and "Kisses" - "Just Friends" was tracked with local producer Steve Tyner at Black Cat Recording. The two handled all the instrumentation apart from the drums which were provided by Tyner's right hand man, Jon Kern. Officially released at the end of June, this new addition to Paisley's growing catalog of original songs slots in nicely and sounds great live - even when stripped down acoustically as performed recently on the web series Lifestyles After Dark. Paisley hopes to release two or three more singles this year, including the two-years-in-the-making "Brokenhearted"
which
boasts an irresistible ELO vibe and his most adventurous vocals to date. Ultimately, he's working towards one goal in particular: "This whole year has been about building up enough original material content to not play covers anymore under my moniker." Catch Kyle Paisley live at Lamasco Bar & Grill on August 7.

TADPOLES BY JOSHUA BRITTON
Local author publishes short story collection examining the struggles of childhood and more An Evansville transplant by way of Rochester, New York, local author Joshua Britton is first and foremost a heck of a musician - he holds a master's degree in trombone, FYI - often sitting in with area orchestras and groups. But about 10 years ago, the punk rock-loving parent started getting serious about his other passion: writing. "I began to study the craft and when I would read, I would read analytically," Britton explains. He also sought out advice from other writers and honed his technical skills, gaining the confidence necessary to create respected works of his own - short stories, primarily. The first draft of one of those stories, "Tadpoles," actually dates back to 2004, but it needed some polishing. Still, the central theme of the piece, children struggling with childhood, seemed to fit the mold of subsequent writing efforts - the bulk of them completed over the last five years making for an obvious title of his first published collection. Released via Bird Brain Publishing, Tadpoles finds Britton deftly exploring the
challenges
of
youth
"when
everything is just so much more intense - time moves so much more slowly. A week or two when you're 12-years-old can seem like a lifechanging era." Being a father, he also delves into the complicated world of parenthood in such moving stories as "Not Leaving Without My Boy" and more emotionally peripheral pieces like "Last Caress." But Britton also gets deep and dark at times "Befriending the Scum of the Earth" and "Unearthing" - summoning the uneasiness of Donna Tartt and black humor of Philip Roth, both authors serving as a noticeable influence on the 12 engaging stories that make up Tadpoles.

KALILA STORMFIRE’S ECONOMICAL MAGICK SERVICES (COMPLETE)
Produced by and starring Lisette Alvarez, Kalila Stormfire is an audio drama podcast about the titular Kalila, a witch trying to establish herself in a new town. Things aren’t as easy as originally expected and soon Stormfire has evidence to suggest a rival witch somewhere is doing everything they can to sink her business before it can get properly started. A rare example of a fictional witch being written and performed by an actual witch, Kalila is one of the best indie audio fiction shows out there.

MOONBASE THETA, OUT (ON HIATUS)
Every few months a podcast comes along that just grabs the listener by the lapels and shows them what the medium is capable of. On the surface, Moonbase Theta is a simple single-narrator audio drama about Roger Bragado-Fischer, a man sending out reports from the titular moonbase. Then the deft performance by Leeman Kessler - even with 4-minute episodes - sucks you into this fascinating, terrifyingly possible future. Then you realize the first season’s episodes start at 20 and count down to 1 and a sinking feeling sets in. Embrace that sinking feeling; MTA is one of the best sci-fi audio fiction series I’ve encountered. monkeymanproductions.com/moonbase-theta-out
FUZZY LOGIC (COMPLETE)
Ever think you know the answer to a question but still do a quick internet search before responding? Fuzzy Logic turns this idea on its head to deliver one of the funnier roundtable discussion podcasts in recent memory. Each episode four friends are tasked with answering questions that for sure have factual answers without looking anything up. Once they've talked out an answer, they go off to research the question and see just how right (or wrong) they were. The hosts are hilarious, the conversation never stalls, and the ever-present threat of being completely wrong keeps things interesting throughout. fuzzy.tumblr.com
THE CRYPTONATURALIST (BIWEEKLY)
This deceptively calming audio fiction series delivers fascinating tales of mythical creatures through the soothing narration of the titular character, a naturalist by way of cryptozoology. Each episode is packaged to feel like a David Attenborough nature documentary delivered by way of Bigfoot. The creatures are as fantastical as the host's voice is captivating. The show also features a wonderful break segment that spotlights short fiction and poetry in a similar manner to how Welcome to Night Vale showcases music each episode. Start from the first episode to hear a simple little concept blossom into a beautifully realized series. cryptonaturalist.com

SUPERVILLAINS, VIDEO GAME CHARACTERS AND PARTYING TEENAGERS: AUGUST CINEMA BRINGS THE CAMP
THE KISSING BOOTH 3 (8/11)
While the end to this pulpy teen trilogy is nothing special, it'll give you those gooey butterflies from young love and have you reminiscing about your favorite summer days, with fan favorites Joey King and Joel Courtney - as BFFs Elle and Lee - trying to outdo themselves with an insane summer fun bucket list at a gorgeous beach house. This all while Elle tries to decide which college to go to - one closer to her hottie boyfriend Noah or the same school as homie-for-life Lee. Even the struggles she faces are similar to the third movie in the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before series, also on Netflix, but we’re still going to watch it because it makes us feel good and it’s just great popcorn fun. Get ready for some sugary sweet cinema on Netflix August 11.
THE SUICIDE SQUAD (8/6)
While Suicide Squad was a bit disappointing when it first hit theaters in 2016 with a lackluster and confusing plot and not nearly enough Jared Leto time, movie studios are still giving this universe a chance - sans Leto. Thankfully, Margo Robbie is back after stealing the show in her own 2020 superhero film Birds of Prey. Her portrayal is so spectacular and enough to keep you hooked for the whole film. Hopefully, the other supervillains can keep up. SNL's Pete Davidson will surely bring some fun as Blackguard. Sylvester Stallone, Idris Elba and John Cena are also adding to the muscle while Joel Kinnaman is returning, too. Sadly, Cara Delevingne is not. But the truth is, no one is as bad as Harley Quinn beating up a lowlife with a baseball bat in six inch heels. Check out the carnage in theaters August 6.
FREE GUY (8/13)
In this wacky comedy, Ryan Reynolds plays an average bank teller named Guy, who comes to the realization he is living in a Grand Theft Auto style video game as a background character. This world is called Free City, and if he doesn’t do something soon, the game will go offline - and he’ll essentially evaporate. It’s a great story about someone overcoming their limitations - like when Reynolds finally stands up to bank robbers after being held hostage for the millionth time in the video game loop. This is a meta film that really asks you to go with it and while it does have some The Truman Show vibes, I think Reynolds' comedic chops - as evidenced by Deadpool - will allow Free Guy to stand on its own. Killing Eve’s sensational Jodie Comer also stars. Get ready to grab onto that controller August 13 when it premieres in theaters.

Tattoos r
tell u s
ut yo o b a u
featuring Melissa 'Moe' Brown CAT: This is actually a portrait of my first pet I got on my own. In 2012, my dad passed away
shortly after my 21st birthday and I dealt with it about as well as one could imagine. A few weeks later I was having a bad day and a friend of mine showed me her cat had just had kittens. Amongst a mountain of black and brown fur, one tiny white fluff ball stood out. I had to have her. I got her two months later and she changed my life for the better. So I decided to thank her by permanently keeping her by my side. SUNFLOWER: This was my first tattoo on my arm. I have
always loved sunflowers and in the beginning, my arm was going to be a sleeve of my “favorite things” so Sunflower was an easy start. I had to haggle with the artist because he didn’t think my placement was the best and didn’t love that I wanted it greyscale, but I have been happy with it ever since. MOOSE: If you know me, you know I love moose. It’s not really an “obsession” - however, I have threatened to abandon city life and run away to Alaska to join a herd. “She died as she lived,” they would say - haha. But on top of that, this tattoo was my reward for quitting smoking. WOMAN: Three years ago I went hiking with a friend in Shawnee National Park and we
decided to take a detour to find some waterfalls. We ended up at one off the beaten path, but there were still a decent amount of people there. We had only been there 10 minutes when something tragic happened. I turned around just in time to see a woman fall over a 40ft cliff. Unfortunately, she passed away, and I, once again, did not deal with death well. I spent a lot of time in solitude, reading books and I stumbled upon a book of poems written by Rupi Kuar, each poem matched with a doodle of hers. This is a drawing from one of the poems that was a big help in me getting better. It simply said “and here you are living, despite it all.” And that’s all I needed. A little reminder that no matter what I’ve gone through in the past, I’m still here. And I’m not going anywhere.

NEWS4U AUGUST 2021 | LOCAL HAPPENINGS
ARE YOU IN
Evansville?
Local residents tell us why they're proud to be a part of our growing community
MICHAEL ROBERTSON, SR. A Bosse High School graduate (2006), I was born and raised in Evansville and never plan to leave; it's made me who I am. I grew up in the bottoms (poor area of Evansville) but I don't blame anyone because I wouldn’t change it for the world. Growing up I had to do what I had to do to survive; I'm not perfect - I've made mistakes like everyone else! As of 2021 I'm not dead or in jail, where I thought I would likely end up. I have six beautiful kids - Ma’Khya, Mikeal, Ka’Mhya, Kaison, Mi’Auna and Michael, Jr. I have been married to my best friend, the beautiful Mrs. Terelle Robertson, for six years now. No matter what happens, my family keeps my head held high. I don't need to move out of Evansville because there are a lot of opportunities here, and one day I plan on being wealthy and visiting all the other places where people are moving to where it costs two and three times as much to live. I'm a CDL holder, and in 2018 I started a trucking company called 812 RUNNERZ, LLC (the 812 stands for the area code I've lived in my entire life). I got my first truck but in 2019 I developed a blood clot in my lung and had to give my truck back and put my company on hold. Now that I'm healthy again, I'm working a regular 9-to-5, trying to save up money to get another truck. I know my time will come again, so I'm just being patient because I've been kicked down before but I always get back up. There's been so many times that I've wondered where my next meal will come from or if I'll get picked up in the next drug sweep. Heck, I've been in the ICU three times with the doctor telling me how I'm lucky to be alive. I've been given chance after chance growing up in Evansville. I feel like this is where I'm supposed to be.
WHITNEY MARTIN Originally from Rockport and New Harmony, respectively, my husband Tyson and I moved to Evansville after graduating college. For us, Evansville offered opportunities to launch a successful career path, while still being close to family and friends. I spent 12 years in the banking and finance world which then enabled the two of us to pursue a business venture of our own. In 2017, we opened Orangetheory Fitness here in Evansville. Aside from operating the business, we are raising two young kids - a son headed to kindergarten and a daughter going into 3rd grade. With the community we discovered and the friendships made through our business, we are very happy with our decision to move to Evansville and find it a wonderful place to live.

SUBARU LOVES TO CARE
featuring Melanie Atwood
Executive Director, Cancer Pathways Midwest
Like so many people in the community, Melanie Atwood has seen the impact of cancer firsthand, having lost family members and friends to the disease and witnessed the toll it takes on everyone involved. So when the opportunity arose to step into the role of Executive Director at Cancer Pathways Midwest (formerly Gilda's Club Evansville) back in 2013, she didn't hesitate to get on board and work to develop a program that would "deliver individual support and resources right where they need it," including social connections, educational workshops, emotional health and nutrition. Most importantly, all of the organization's services are offered free of charge to persons with cancer, their caregivers, family and friends. What inspires you to be a part of Cancer Pathways Midwest? Every day you get to see a transformation that happens - people walk through our door and they have more questions than answers. And when they walk out the door, their shoulders are straighter, their smile is on and they're walking out empowered and they're ready to face the challenge and the challenges that cancer brings. Every day we are fueled and inspired by the courage and the grit that they have and it's an amazing place to be a part of and share that journey with them. Can you share an example of how someone has benefited from the organization's services? We have a family with two young kids that lost their dad and lost

their husband. Mom was kind of encouraged to get out of their living place so we were able to get a couple of places in town to go box up their belongings and get them moved, no cost to them. And they're here as part of our support and part of our family, finding ways to continue to walk forward in strength. How can the community help to further the mission of Cancer Pathways Midwest? We are always looking for volunteers - both from individuals and corporations. That's how we survive and how we thrive. Taking sunshine baskets to the porches; coming in and preparing meals or serving meals; answering the phone - all are ways that people can help. In addition, funding - sponsoring an individual or a family, for example. What excites you about the future of Cancer Pathways Midwest? We are excited to expand the programs and services we have beyond our little footprint here in Evansville - so we're going to Jasper, Henderson, Princeton, Owensboro and potentially even El Dorado. Some people in these places work here; some get treatment here. They want the program that we offer, so we're on the go in places you know. For more info, visit romainsubaru.com. EXPLORING SMALL BUSINESS
with Elaina Adams
Almost everyone can remember what it's like to play with Legos as a kid or, in some cases, as a childish adult. You start with a grand vision of a structure and end up with, what's in your mind, a full-blown masterpiece that rivals the Taj Mahal. In most cases, it takes time, creativity, and a lot of freaking patience to build any semblance of something worth bragging about. Now imagine trying to do it on a much larger scale. Welcome to the insane world of carpenter Robby Zimmermann.
ROBBY ZIMMERMAN CARPENTER
It all began when Robby's dad, Bob, built a skateboard ramp in the fifth grade. By the time Robby graduated middle school, they had created an entire half pipe. Obviously, Robby's build-ajourney didn't stop there. Wanting to take his carpentry skills to the next level, he enrolled at Ball State University to study architecture. Now, most architects aren't carpenters and vice versa. That's arguably where the insanity comes in. By embracing both, Robby has taken his analytical and creative mind and carved out a career that not just anyone can do. Not even close. Robby kicks off his concepts by first creating a digital 3D model. He walked me through the process when I stopped by his workshop a few weeks ago, and let me tell you, it is an art form in and of itself. After the model is finalized comes the blood, sweat and tears - the process of physically building something. For example, Robby, a single father to his three-year-old daughter, Ellie, made her a sweet playhouse last summer. He used recycled wood from his childhood playground to construct the frame and then worked a bunch of other magic to see this cozy little cottage to fruition. The finished product, which took two months to complete, might be nicer than my apartment. I'm not even kidding. After seeing how much Ellie loved her new home, Robby decided to continue making children's dreams come true with woodworking. "It can totally transform a child's social experiences," he says. Robby's latest project is a princess castle bed - once again for daughter Ellie. It comes complete with three battlements and a massive, winding stairway leading up to a loft where Ellie can live out her fairytales. Robby, if you want another kid, sign me up. I'll get the adoption papers ready. Listen, no 500-word article can articulate just how much work Robby puts into his craft and how beautiful his creations really are. So be sure to check out his Instagram @builderboyrob to keep up with this inspired craftsman. It is also the best way to contact him if you find yourself in the market for a playhouse, princess castle bed, or just about any other structure that you can imagine. Tell him I sent you and be sure to mention that I'm still waiting for him to sign those papers.

DUKE
VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT
Jill Ingram and her family live on a farm up in Chandler, Indiana, where they care for a wide range of outside and inside animals, including horses, goats, chickens, parakeets, a potbelly pig, a dog and a cat - and now a fluffy new friend named Duke as well. Recently adopted from the VHS, the adorable white rabbit has slotted in perfectly with the whole crew and is particularly loved by Ingram's six-year-old son Jaxon who set the whole rescue in motion. And that's a heartwarming story worth telling, for sure. Seems Jaxon harbored a terrible fear of doctors and generally went to pieces every time he had to go in for a checkup. So as his required appointment for entering kindergarten drew nearer, his mom struck a deal with him. "Jaxon had started asking for a rabbit, so we told him that if he could be really big and tough and make it through the appointment we could go get one," Ingram explains. "About two weeks before the doctor's visit we went to the VHS - I wanted to make sure he understood that a rabbit was a little different from a dog or a cat. He was able to spend time with a couple of rabbits and one was Duke - he just loved Duke." Before leaving the VHS, Jaxon sweetly made Duke a promise that he was "going to be really good for his doctor's appointment" and that he'd come back to get him. And that's exactly what happened. Well, for the most part. "Jaxon started to lose it during the visit," Ingram recalls, "but we brought a picture of Duke along and showed it to him. We asked, 'Do you remember Duke? Do you remember the deal?' He said 'yes' and 'I can do this' and he was amazing." Meltdown averted, the family drove to a pet supply store and picked up everything needed to care for Duke - and then headed straight to the VHS to make the adoption official. It's only been a few weeks, but Duke has settled right in to his new home, even hanging out with everyone on the bed for movie night and often chilling on the sofa. "He's so friendly and loves the kids," Ingram notes. She's also happy to report that the family's rescue cat took to Duke right away; the two play together sometimes, in fact. Yes, it's one big happy family up there in Chandler - but there's always room for one more. "I would never be able to say that we're done with animals," Ingram says with a laugh.

In Indiana, Republicans have had such a superpower in Indy for so long that they no longer have to fake being fair. Heck, even this year's MLB All-Star game was moved out of Atlanta over Georgia's recent voting law which requires ID. Not sure if the commissioner even read the bill or really cares about Atlanta, but that's neither here nor there. I'm never for a department or executive having complete control. BRIDGING the Gap

HOW TO SPEAK GEN Z (PT. 2) When a Gen Zer talks, do you often find yourself trying to decode their lingo? It can be confusing when you hear words and phrases like “spill the tea” or “no cap.” No, these phrases don’t mean that tea has really been spilled or that we’re no longer wearing our baseball caps. Navigating through this lingo can be tough, especially when trying to communicate with teenagers. Luckily, you’ve come to the right place to learn just what your teenager is saying and even get a chance to engage in conversation using his/her lingo. Here are three popular phrases and words Gen Zers are using right now!
LOWKEY: in secret
Common Phrases: “very lowkey” “I lowkey…”
HOW TO USE:
The best time to use this phrase is anytime. You can add it into sentences that don’t have any secretive or discreet meaning to them. If you do want to use this word according to its meaning, it’s best to use if you’re planning a surprise or want something to stay between you and your teen only.
EXAMPLES:
(According to the meaning) “We’re planning a surprise party for your brother’s birthday, so keep it lowkey.” (Not according to the meaning) “I lowkey don’t want to cook dinner tonight.”
SHOOK :
HOW TO USE:
Common Phrase: “I’m shook”
EXAMPLES:
to be surprised/shocked
TEA :
the gossip
Common Phrases: “Spill the tea” “Let me just sip my tea”
If your teen does something that is surprising, you can add this word in after you explain your surprise. It can also be used after experiencing, reading, or watching something that took you by surprise. “Your behavior has been terrible lately, I’m shook.” “Did you see the ending of that movie? I didn’t see it coming, I’m shook.”
HOW TO USE:
When you can see that your teenager is visibly holding something back, you can encourage him/ her to open up by using the phrase, “spill the tea.” You can also use the word when you want to talk about someone who is gossiping around you. Another way to use the word "tea" in Gen Zer’s lingo is to use the phrase, “let me just sip my tea.” By using this phrase, you can basically state that you’re observing someone else’s questionable behavior, but you’re going to mind your own business.
EXAMPLES:
“I can tell something’s going on, spill the tea.” “You’re going out even though you have to work tomorrow morning; let me just sip my tea.” If you find yourself wondering what the meaning of everyday words are or thinking that TikTok is the sound a clock makes, head on back to this column as we bridge the gap between Gen Zers and the rest of the world.

DOJA CAT Planet Her Kemosabe/RCA Records I had been sleeping on Doja Cat, until just a few months ago when my YouTube mix started randomly playing her banger “Rules” which left me shell shocked by her dreamy vocals, killer raps, deliciously poetic yet snarky lyrics, and insane vision for visuals - everything from a satin purple tuxedo suit to the orange dreamsicle alien landscape in the “Kiss Me More” music video. And it's a team effort as she collaborates with SZA who is out of this world. Thankfully, this third studio album has come just in time for my musical and spiritual awakening. “Need to Know” is another sexy, futuristic song with Doja Cat on the prowl as an alien. And it tracks - the whole premise of the album is that everyone lives in harmony on Planet Her. Someone call Richard Branson for me because I’m ready for lift-off. - Marisa Patwa
MARINA Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land Atlantic Records I have been a fan of Welsh singer Marina since she dropped delightful gems like “I Am Not a Robot” in 2010's The Family Jewels - back when she still had “and the Diamonds” in her moniker - which subsequently became the soundtrack to my summer of 2011 visiting my best friend and her family in A Thousand Oaks, CA. Marina’s voice is distinct and gorgeously addictive, electrifying your ears as you listen while trying to catch up and memorize the lyrics so you can start dramatically singing along. And Marina’s music can be dramatic, too, but in the best way. On this fifth studio album, she effortlessly proves she is still in the game; even if she may not be the most well known or popular singer, her talent is undeniable - especially on songs like “Venus Fly Trap,” “Man’s World” and “Purge the Poison.” While she may not go by Marina and the Diamonds anymore, she is still a priceless jewel. - Marisa Patwa
MAROON 5 Jordi Interscope Records Maroon 5 have been in the industry long enough that it’s no surprise they are really experimenting with various flavors of sounds on their seventh studio album. While soft-rock and pretty pop songs have given them hit-singles worldwide, this album isn’t giving me any major obsessed vibes just yet other than “Beautiful Mistakes” with Meg Thee Stallion. It does tug at the heart strings though, being dedicated to the band’s late manager, Jordan Feldstein, who passed away suddenly in 2017. “Echo” with Blackbear is sweet like honey with Levine delivering some insane falsettos that sound a lot like something Bazzi would sing, but no complaints here. “Remedy” is a surprise delight with Stevie Nicks as a feature while the drums and bass in “Convince Me Otherwise” hit just right, as does H.E.R. who elevates the song with angelic vocals. While this album isn’t their best, it's beautiful and heartfelt. Jordi would be proud. - Marisa Patwa

KK'S PRIEST Sermons of the Sinner EX1 Records Yes, it’s another band riven by conflict and touring as separate acts. Guitarist KK Downing left legendary metal outfit Judas Priest a decade ago, but he’s since decided that if founding members Rob Halford and Ian Hill won’t welcome him back, he’ll go it alone. Touring under the less than creative “KK’s Priest,” Downing has managed to assemble a formidable band. Most notable is former Iced Earth front man and one-time Judas Priest replacement vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens. Add guitarist A.J. Mills, bassist Tony Newton, and drummer Sean Elg, and what you get is KK Downing’s first solo record, Sermons of the Sinner. With songs like “Hellfire Thunderbolt,” “Metal Through and Through” and “Return of the Sentinel,” this isn't high art. However, it's a raucous power metal nostalgia trip for longtime Priest fans and those thirsty for new metal. Standouts are “Hellfire Thunderbolt” and the title track. - Matt Alschbach

Organ’s
debut album is a shining example of what one looks for in a collection of songs: it knows its lane, it's not afraid to take chances, and it shows character and talent. Within 30 seconds of opening track “Stranger,” there are immediate Daniel Bedingfield sounds, shooting directly into The Killers’ territory, before the vocal prowess of Lewis Capaldi paints this introspective portrait into a wonderfully crafted soundscape. Organ continues to showcase his complete vocal range throughout the record while wailing on heartland rock and neo-psychedelic tunes “Sunday Suit” and “Better Than This” - which could be mistaken for a darker Dr. Dog. The more pop-influenced “London’s Calling” recalls the aforementioned Capaldi but with hints of Ed Sheeran-esque vocal speed while church choir ballad “Heal You” brings authentic, bare and untouched vocals with live room undertones. But it’s the experiential indie tracks “The Fire” and “Burning Desire” that allow Organ’s vocal delivery to mesh with sound effects and swirls that almost stand alone as instruments themselves. It makes you wonder what Organ is capable of on his follow up record. - Freddie Bourne

Blues with Bragin SCOTT ELLISON Skyline Drive Red Parlor
Tulsa-born blues-rocker Scott Ellison returns with Skyline Drive which opens with electrifying guitar work on “I’m Missing You.” The title track, which straddles the line between blues and cool, late night jazz, finds Ellison singing about hitting the road with someone he loves sitting next to him. The classic sound of “Something About You” features solid piano in the background to complement Ellison’s guitar. David Bernston’s harmonica on “Obsession” shows off his talent. “Coming Down From Loving You” features Steve Crane on bass providing a nice counterpoint to Ellison’s guitar on a song the two co-wrote. “All Wound Up” sounds like a more modern version of something from a 1950s sock hop, with great piano and guitar. The brief acoustic song “Woman’s Got a Hold on Me” seems reminiscent of something from the Mississippi Delta. Casey Van Beek’s bass on “Breathe Underwater” offers a funky groove to match Ellison’s stellar guitar playing. The melancholy guitar and organ on “These Blues Got a Hold on Me” fit well with the lyrics about a woman leaving. “Overwhelmed” cranks the volume to 11 as Ellison sings about one misfortune after another. The album closes with “Lonely in Love,” a song about unrequited passion. For more info, visit redparlor.com. - Paul Bragin

AUGUST BEER REVIEWS This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. RHINEGEIST WOWIE
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4
A departure from Rhinegeist's usual offerings, Wowie is an ale that will be appreciated by cider drinkers as well. Straw-colored, with a thin white head, this ale has notes of pineapple on the nose. On the palate, the pineapple and passion fruit are the dominant flavors. If there are any hops flavors they are overpowered by the tropical flavors. If you are looking for something akin to a cider, give this a try. It lives up to its name.
PAUL BRAGIN - 3.25
A decent white head tops this slightly hazy beer, but it evaporates somewhat quickly. Pineapple, passion fruit and apple scents fill the nose. Sweet fruit flavors reminiscent of a cider hit the tongue first. This seasonal offering seems like a good choice to drink on a hot summer day to ward off the heat. Use it as an ingredient in apple pie, pineapple upside-down cake and drink it while eating a slice of each.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This is a slightly cloudy, straw-colored beverage. I'm not usually a fan of fruit-flavored beers but I like this one - perhaps because of the sweet pineapple flavor. I can also taste a light apple flavor. Overall, it's tart with a little sweetness at the finish. Very refreshing and enjoyable.

KONA BIG WAVE GOLDEN ALE
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.75
Smooth and light, this is a classic ale. Pours a clear straw color, with a slight fruitiness on the nose. It's very smooth on the palate, with very little hop presence. Overall, Kona has produced a balanced and very drinkable ale that's ideal for the sweltering August days in the tri-state.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5
A thick white head rests on this golden ale and gradually evaporates. Malt scents dominate the nose, with a little bit of hop presence. Similarly, the initial tasting of the beer sees the malt and hop flavors going back and forth in a nice balance. The slightly lower alcohol content lets the drinker imbibe a few without going overboard, especially at a summer picnic or ballgame. Pair it with seafood, poultry, salads and light pasta dishes.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5
This is a clear amber beer with a very predominate sweet malty flavor and a light yeast aroma. I would definitely classify this as a light beer that's refreshing and perfect for the summertime - especially after mowing lawn during the heat of the day.

BELL'S TROPICAL OBERON
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3
Pours a hazy orange hue with a thin white head. On the nose are typical wheat beer estery notes, with a slightly tropical essence. On the palate the guava comes through the strongest, and it finishes with a hint of mango. This is a fresh take on Bell’s Oberon.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4
A thick white head forms on this beer when poured into a wheat beer glass and evaporates slowly. The scent boasts a lot of tropical fruit notes from the mango, guava and passion fruit used during the brewing. Likewise, the first sip of the beer contains more of the fruit flavors. Drink this while sitting on a beach or pair it with goat cheese, Manchego cheese, jerk chicken, salsa verde or pair it with your favorite fruit dessert.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
This is a cloudy, straw-colored beer. It's tart at the beginning with a noticeable burst of passion fruit and mango and a very tropical aroma. I'm not sure what guava tastes like but it's in there, too. Overall, this Bell's offering is a little too fruity for me, but I admire the effort.

session beer lovers will want to try this seasonal offering. The lower alcohol content gives the beer a lot of drinkability. Pair it with fish tacos, ceviche, fresh salsa or burgers.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
This beer pours a hazy straw color. It has a sweet hops aroma but it's a little light on the flavor. The 4.6% ABV is a little light for an IPA, but it's a summer beverage and meant to be easy to drink. That's why I gave it a 4 because I could drink this while enjoying a summer activity.

Q: My 10-year-old son was invited to a pool party at a friend's house in the neighborhood
during which there was little supervision. He slipped and fell while running on the wet pavement and, as result, broke his arm and suffered numerous cuts and bruises. Can the owner of the home be held financially/legally responsible for his injuries?
A: This hypothetical presents several considerations. First, you have a relationship to consider. Anytime a child is hurt at a friend’s house,
how the parents handle the situation can affect the relationship between the families and in this case even the neighborhood.
The second consideration is more of just a legal question. Namely, can the homeowner be held responsible for an invitee’s injuries? Under Indiana law a homeowner does guarantee the safety of invitees.
When a homeowner invites someone over, the homeowner has a duty to the invitee to make sure the home is reasonably safe and free of hazards. So, If a hazard (here wet pavement) does exist, the homeowner should correct the hazard, barricade the area and/or warn the
invitee of the danger. Of course when the invitee is a child, the homeowner also has duties to supervise the invitee and inform the invitee’s parents of the activities the children will be participating in while at the home.
The legal outcome of this case may turn on whether the homeowner informed the parents of the invitee that the kids would be swimming, whether the homeowner adequately supervised the kids and whether the homeowner warned the kids of the wet pavement.
Often in law, there is not a clear answer to a particular situation. So, someone in a situation like this one should contact an experienced personal injury law firm to help in deciding what to do and how strong of a case they may have.
