South Asians Making Significant Strides In The World Of Franchising

(Continued From Page 01)

The success of numerous South Asian franchise owner’s evidences this across the nation. Such as Sanjeev Khanna (founder and chairman of GS Dallas Group), along with his partners, Govind Agrawal, Rahul Agrawal, Ambika Khanna Cheruvu, and Shivam Khanna, are involved in various franchises, including Subway, Wing Stop, European Wax Center, Massage Envy, Great American Cookies, and Aloft Hotels.

The group, which has offices in Dallas and Houston, owns and operates over 200 locations across seven states and Ruchika, Prashant Nagrath, Ruchika, and Prashant’s remarkable growth from 3 to 102 franchise locations in less than 30 months, even during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrates the potential for franchising to be a safe and scalable path to achieve financial and time freedom.

And many others from Dallas. Similarly, Houston is home to numerous successful South Asian franchise owners.

South Asian parents often place a strong emphasis on education, which plays a significant role in the success of many of these entrepreneurs.

Education helps young people develop critical thinking skills and provides them with the knowledge they need to succeed academically and professionally.

South Asians are also passionate about learning new skills, which can be beneficial when starting a business or managing one success-

fully.

In addition to having access to educational opportunities, South Asians have access to numerous resources that help them gain insight into franchising.

These include online forums where people can ask questions about franchises, research conducted on franchising opportunities, seminars held by franchisors or industry experts on topics such as legal issues related to franchising, or financial management tips for franchisees; all these resources give potential franchisees invaluable information they need before making any decisions regarding franchising.

For many South Asians, franchising offers an attractive option, as it is a proven business model with lower risks and higher chances of success than independent startups.

Franchising allows an individual to get into business with an established brand name with its own loyal customers and employees.

It also reduces the time required for market research & development, marketing & promotion, customer service & loyalty building activities when starting an independent venture.

Furthermore, franchisors provide support services such as business training & consultations, which help franchisees run their businesses efficiently and effectively.

In Houston alone, several successful South Asian franchise owners are making a mark for themselves in various industries such as hospitality, retail, food service, etc.

Buying a home can be intimidating, whether this is your first time or you’ve been around the real estate block before. The good news? You don’t have to go it alone. If you’re looking for a trusted partner throughout the process, working with a housing counselor can help prepare you for homeownership.

If you’re not sure what a housing counselor does or whether this service is right for you, consider these insights from Freddie Mac:

What is a Housing Counselor?

Housing counselors are trained, independent professionals who are available to offer advice, listen and help you make informed decisions based on your financial situation and needs — often at little or no cost. Their job is to help you navigate the homebuying journey and ensure you’re financially prepared for long-term, successful homeownership.

What Services Do They Provide?

One of the primary roles of a housing counselor is to prepare you for homeownership through workshops and one-on-one counseling. The counselor will start by asking you questions about your income, credit and savings to help determine if you’re ready to buy and how much you plan on spending. Similar to a conversation with a potential lender, the more organized and prepared you are, the more productive your conversation will be. Once they understand your

current financial situation, they will:

• Provide guidance on down payment options and local down payment assistance programs.

• Help you understand the features and costs associated with the various types of mortgages available.

• Teach you important financial skills, such as planning your budget and building, maintaining and improving your credit.

• Advise you on the role of your real estate agent and lender.

It’s important to know that housing counselors can be there for you beyond the homebuying process. For example, if you are facing financial difficulties and struggling to pay your mortgage down the line, a housing counselor can offer financial guidance and work with your lender to help you avoid foreclosure.

• Reach out to a HUD-certified housing counselor at one of Freddie Mac’s Borrower Help Centers or Borrower Help Network for free assistance.

• Search for a HUD-certified housing counselor in your area on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s website.

That moment when your child receives an acceptance letter to a coveted college is a time to feel pride in their achievements and excited about their future. It’s also a time to make sense of the school’s price tag. That’s where financial award letters come into play.

“You’ll receive an award letter from each school your student was accepted to listing all the details of the financial aid package,” says Angela Colatriano, College Ave Student Loans. “This information helps you figure out what’s covered and how much your family is expected to pay.”

Unfortunately, if you’re like many parents, you may not be prepared for everything you read in these award letters. In a recent College Ave Student Loans survey, only 30% of parents who received award letters said they received as much aid as they expected, and 74% said they found the expected family contribution surprisingly high. Colatriano also notes that

because the layout of these letters varies from school to school, it can be hard to compare their terms. To help you decipher your financial aid award letters and figure out how to pay for college this fall, consider these tips and insights:

1. Sort grants and scholarships from other aid: If your child was awarded a federal grant or scholarships from the college, they will be listed on your award letter. These

do not need to be repaid and are applied directly to the school’s tuition. You can also pursue outside scholarships. One easy one to apply for is the College Ave $1,000 monthly scholarship sweepstakes. Encourage your student to apply for scholarships year-round, as every little bit helps.

2. Delve into federal aid: The award letters will show you if your student qualified for the Federal

a

Housing Counselor? Although finding a housing counselor can be as simple as running a search online or calling a hotline, it’s important to carefully consider your options.

Unfortunately, scam artists abound, preying on home buyers and struggling homeowners alike.

Work-Study program. Likewise, schools will list any federal student loans you’re eligible to receive. Don’t forget to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year to qualify.

3. Meet the gap: If after accounting for grants, scholarships and federal aid there is still a gap between school costs and what you can afford, consider how you can reduce costs or get more funding. For example, you may reconsider your choice of school or have your student take on a part-time job. You might also want to shop around for a private student loan. If you do so, make sure you borrow only what you need. Also, look for a lender offering favorable terms, repayment options and interest rates. College Ave Student Loans offers resources to help you navigate paying for college, including a student loan calculator to show what your monthly payments could look like. To learn more, visit CollegeAve. com.

• Call the national HOPE hotline at 888-995-HOPE or visit its website at 995HOPE.org. This hotline is free and available 24 hours a day.

Buying a home is one of the largest financial decisions you can make. Having a trusted expert in your corner means you don’t have to go it alone. (StatePoint)

4. Look before you leap: Remember that most types of financial aid come with terms and conditions. For example, a scholarship may require a student to maintain a certain GPA for it to be renewed the following semester. Federal and private loans will have interest rates and repayment terms. Before accepting or pursuing any type of financial aid, be sure you understand what’s involved.

5. Get assistance: When in doubt, don’t be afraid to reach out to your school’s financial aid office for assistance. They are a great resource to help you and your family navigate the financial aid process.

“With so many competing financial pressures, it’s more important than ever for college-bound families to understand the ins and outs of their financial aid offers and what they’re responsible to cover each year,” says Colatriano. (StatePoint)

How To Be A Pet Parent On A Budget

Whether you are a first-time or veteran pet owner, being a pet parent can be expensive. From daily needs like food, treats and toys to medicines, the costs can add up.

To help stretch your budget, the experts at Dollar General are providing cost-friendly ways to provide for your pet:

Food to Fuel Your Furry Friend

Fueling your pet with nutritious food doesn’t have to break your budget. By stocking up on options available exclusively at select retailers, you can feed your furry family member affordably. For example, Nature’s Menu is available only at Dollar General and offers dog and cat food free from artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.

Their dry pet food products also include pre and probiotics to support healthy digestion, along with added vitamins, minerals and other trace nutrients and a money-back satisfaction guarantee.

Hygiene How-To

Having a pup or feline companion comes

with responsibility, especially when it pertains to their cleanliness and well-being. To maintain a groomed pet, create a care tote that includes such hygiene essentials as a brush or flea comb, shampoo, nail clippers and puppy pads, which can be used as clean-

up tool for both dogs and cats. Also consider using a dual-action topical treatment to help prevent fleas and ticks. Be sure to see a trusted veterinarian for annual checkups and other needs.

Paw-some Accessories

All those accessories that enhance your pet’s days and nights don’t have to be costly. Consider new water and food bowls, a collar and a bed for a good night’s rest after playful days.

Next, make playtime a bit more fun with a few new toys from Dollar General’s private brand, Forever Pals, which include a variety toy pack for dogs and a feather wand for cats. With these accessories, your pet will be wagging their tail or purring with excitement all day long!

By shopping wisely for all your pet’s needs, you can provide them with quality products while stretching your budget in the process.

Why Early Detection Of Lung Cancer Is So Important

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. While early detection can vastly improve a patient’s chances to lead a full and healthy life, the majority of those who are high risk are not getting screened. The American Lung Association, which is committed to defeating lung cancer and supporting those with the disease, is sharing vital information to help more people learn their risk and connect them to screenings and other life-saving resources:

Preventable Deaths

According to the 2022 “State of Lung Cancer” report, a mere 5.8% of Americans eligible for a low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan were screened. A low-dose CT scan is a special kind of X-ray that takes multiple pictures as the patient lies on a table that slides in and out of the machine. A computer then combines these images into a detailed picture of the lungs. Studies estimate that if even just half of the approximately 8 million Americans identified as high risk for lung cancer were screened with a low-dose CT scan, over 12,000 lung cancer deaths

could be prevented. In fact, since low-dose CT scans started to be used for screening, it has reduced cancer deaths by 20% and it has reduced deaths from other causes by almost 7%.

Risk Eligibility

Many people who are at risk for lung cancer and are eligible for screening are not identified and are not referred for screening. Under the most recent lung cancer screening guidelines, those ages 50-80 who have a 20 pack-year smoking history or who have

3 Ways To Prep Your Home For Bug Season

It can be tempting to think that bugs simply disappear in the cooler months. The truth is that many bug species have evolved to survive all year long, sometimes hiding in the warm nooks and crannies in and around homes. Others go into a hibernation-like state.

“Bugs can be a lot smarter and more resilient than you may realize. Even if you don’t see household pests right now, some may

still be waiting in your home for those first warm days to signal them to become active, search for food and find a mate,” says Emma Klingman, senior products research at Zevo,

1. Tidy up: Household pests love snacking just as much as people do, but you don’t need to play host to them. After meals, wipe down tables, counters and other kitchen surfaces.

Be sure to regularly sweep and vacuum crumbs, as well as mop up to eliminate sticky food residue. Keep a tightly-fitting lid on your garbage bin, and rinse cans and jars before recycling them.

2. Be ready: Even an immaculate home will face pest problems at some point. That’s why it is important to have tools on hand to catch a problem early, before it becomes a much bigger one.

quit smoking in the past 15 years should get screened for lung cancer. The American Lung Association offers a helpful tool for determining your eligibility for screening, found at www.SavedByTheScan.org.

Eliminating Racial Disparities

It is especially important for Black men and women to speak to their health care provider about their risk and get screened if necessary, as they are more likely to develop lung cancer and less likely to survive five years with the disease than people of any other racial or ethnic group.Research suggests that Black Americans have a higher baseline risk for developing lung cancer -- Black American smokers get lung cancer at least 20% more often than other people who smoke. Furthermore, systemic racism and injustices and issues continue to persist in the healthcare system, and Black people and other communities of color are less likely to be diagnosed early, less likely to receive surgical treatment, and more likely to not receive any treatment at all.

Fighting Barriers

Despite the fact that lung cancer screening is extremely effective at improving life expectancy and has the potential to dramatically improve lung cancer survival rates, many patients are not getting screened, even when they have a referral from their doctor to do so. The reasons for low screening adherence range from practical concerns, such as financial and transportation barriers, to more elusive issues like distrust of the medical system and lack of awareness regarding the seriousness of the disease.

Emerging resources are helping eliminate these barriers and are making it easier for people to assess their screening eligibility, locate screening centers, schedule appointments, and receive financial assistance if they don’t have insurance or transportation. Free tobacco cessation resources and other lung health resources also exist to help people to reduce their risk.

a maker of pest control products with naturally-inspired ingredients you can feel good about.

To prep your home for bug season and outsmart pests, follow these three steps:

Likewise, the brand’s traps use a UV and blue light system to attract and capture flying insects, and they have a discreet design that can serve as a bouncer at your home’s entry points.

It’s also smart to use these traps in potential problem areas, such as near trash cans and fruit bowls and near toilet bowls and drains.

From service industry franchises like restaurant chains to retail ones like clothing stores, South Asians are increasingly finding success in the franchising world. The trend has been reflected in current franchise ownership statistics, showing that 5-8% of all U.S. franchisees are now of South Asian descent.

City Steps In To Help Relocate Salvation Army Clients

The Salvation Army agrees to extend downtown shelter operations for up to 30 days.

AUSTIN, Texas - After discussions with the City of Austin, the local advisory board of The Salvation Army Austin Area Command (The Salvation Army) has agreed to extend its downtown shelter operations for up to 30 days.

The extension will cost up to $100,000, funded by the City.

In the meantime, the organization will coordinate with the City’s Homeless Strategy Division and other service partners to facilitate the placement of clients.

If case management is not available in new temporary housing settings, The Salvation Army staff will continue to provide that service to their clients.

The City Council’s Public Health Committee met on March 8, and committee members expressed

concern about The Salvation Army shelter’s planned closure on March 15 and the impact on clients.

Public Health Committee members requested that The Salvation Army extend its downtown operations to allow for safe placement of all clients.

Austin Interim City Manager Jesús Garza authorized the Homeless Strategy Division to exhaust all options to find placements for The Salvation Army clients.

Today, staff reported to Council that the Homeless Strategy Division and community partners have identified alternative shelter or housing for approximately 50 remaining shelter clients.

Clients of The Salvation Army will likely be accommodated in a variety of settings, including local shelters, apartments secured by a service provider, transitional housing programs, board and care homes, and, if needed, hotel stays

arranged through a nonprofit partner.

“Addressing this crisis in such a short period of time has only been possible through the collaboration and creativity of our community partners – over a dozen of whom have stepped forward to offer shelter beds, housing, and other resources,” Homeless Strategy Officer Dianna Grey said.

“We also appreciate the willingness of The Salvation Army to extend operations to allow for a more thoughtful transition.”

This morning, the Homeless Strategy Division and other service providers visited clients and case managers at the downtown shelter to give an overview of relocation options and answer questions about the process.

Clients were assured that they would be offered a local placement before the shelter closes.

“The residents of The Salvation Army shelter should never have been left in limbo as they were, but I truly appreciate that folks from our Homeless Strategy Division and Austin Public Health have stepped in to help the residents with compassion and urgency to ensure everyone has a safe space to stay,” Mayor Kirk Watson said.

“From day one, I’ve pushed The Salvation Army to keep the shelter open while they sell the building and they’ve finally relented at least for the short term.

While this is a temporary solution to an emergency, the work done here represents the kind of responsive service the City is now deliv-

ering to all its residents. I thank the City employees involved.”

Next steps include communication and dialogue with The Salvation Army clients, completing the process of matching clients to available locations, and coordinating logistics of program intake, transportation, and move-in.

The Homeless Strategy Division will continue to regularly report on progress until all shelter clients are accommodated.

Why You Should Consider A Hybrid For Your Next Vehicle

With gas prices surging and national efforts being made to reduce carbon emissions, you may be eyeing car models that promise to reduce or even eliminate your reliance on gas. However, depending on your lifestyle, location, finances, driving habits and other factors, you may not be ready to go fully electric just yet. The good news? A hybrid is a great transitional vehicle to put you on the path to more sustainable driving now. Here’s why:

Hybrid vehicles, which combine smaller gas engines with battery-powered electric motors, make it possible for anyone to contribute to the fight against carbon emissions and reduce their gas expenses. In fact, today’s hybrids achieve 20-35% better fuel economy than conventional internal combustion engines, according to Green America. In the short term, hybrids are a cost-effective option compared with most all-electric vehicles currently on the market. While a battery electric vehicle will save you even further on fuel costs down the line, the average transaction price for one of these rides is still well above $60,000. A hybrid is also a key alternative to electric vehicles for those who live in locations where the current electric vehicle infrastructure doesn’t yet support everyday transport, or for those who don’t own a home where they can charge a vehicle at night. With greater fuel economy than a traditional internal combustion engine, and requiring no lifestyle overhaul to operate, hybrids are one way to reduce carbon emissions today. Given these varied benefits, and the rising number of available vehicles with a hybrid powertrain, it’s no surprise that annual hybrid sales in the United States have more than doubled since 2019. As you shop around, be sure to look for manufacturers with hybrids available across their entire lineup, from pickups and SUVs to sedans. This will help you find a model that matches your needs. Sporting blue badges, it’s easy to spot Toyota’s hybrid options on the lot. While hybrid technology has historically cost more, prices are leveling, and budget-conscious buyers will find options under $30k, including the Corolla Hybrid and the all-new Prius. Boasting all the latest safety and multimedia features, along with sleek exterior design, you won’t have to compromise on style or performance in the quest for efficiency. To learn more about electrified vehicles, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, fuel cell electric and battery electric cars, visit toyota.com/electrified. Whether you are experiencing pain at the pump or simply want to live more sustainably, making your next vehicle a hybrid is an effortless step you can take to save money at the gas pump and reduce your carbon footprint. Take These 6 Steps To Manage Your Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, affects nearly half of adults in the United States, and only about 1 in 4 with this condition have it under control, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Hypertension can be dangerous and in many cases, fatal. In 2020, it was a primary or contributing cause of more than 670,000 deaths nationwide. Medical experts say that controlling your blood pressure is

minutes beforehand, as the CDC says that smoking and drinking alcohol or caffeine can elevate your blood pressure. If you take medication for hypertension, measure your blood pressure before your dose. Share your numbers with your health care provider.

possible and it starts with having the right information.

“Nearly half of all American adults have high blood pressure, and many don’t even know it. High blood pressure is a ‘silent killer,’ often having no overt symptoms, but increases the likelihood of heart attack, stroke and other serious health risks. I urge you to know your numbers and make the simple lifestyle changes that can help you control your blood pressure and live a long and healthy life,” says Jack Resneck Jr., M.D., president of the American Medical Association (AMA).

To get on the right track, consider these tips and insights from the AMA:

1. Know your numbers. Hypertension is diagnosed when your systolic blood pressure is greater than 130 mmHg or your average diastolic blood pressure is greater than 80 mmHg. Visit ManageYourBP.org to better understand your numbers.

2. Monitor blood pressure. Once you learn your blood pressure numbers, take and keep regular records using an at-home blood pressure monitor. For an accurate reading, the CDC says to sit with your back supported for 5 minutes before starting and wait at least 30 minutes after drinking or eating a meal. You should also avoid stimulants for at least 30

3. Eat right. Reduce your intake of processed foods, especially those with added sodium and sugar. Eat less red meat and processed meats, and add more plant-based foods, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and olive oil to your diet. Also, reduce your consumption of sugarsweetened beverages and drink more water instead. Drinking sugary beverages, even 100% fruit juices, is associated with a higher all-cause mortality risk, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open.

4. Drink alcohol only in moderation. If consuming alcohol, do so in moderation as defined by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans -- up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age.

5. Be more physically active. Do at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorousintensity activity. Be sure to include a mix of cardiovascular exercise, strength training and flexibility. Obtain guidance from your doctor if you aren’t sure if it is safe for you to exercise.

6. Maintain a healthy weight. If you are overweight, losing as little as 5 to 10 pounds may help lower your blood pressure. Consult your doctor about safe ways to maintain a healthy weight.

“Unmanaged hypertension can have lifealtering consequences,” says Dr. Resneck. “The good news is that there are many ways you can take control of your blood pressure and your health.” (StatePoint)

Director Imran J Khan’s Film Mustache Brings Pakistani Americans Into Focus At SXSW

Mustache, a coming-of-age film about a Pakistani American fourteen-year-old boy who moves from an Islamic school to a public high school and has a hijab-clad family, drew large crowds at the SXSW festival Mar. 10-18 in Austin.

Written and directed by Imran J. Khan, a Los Angeles based American filmmaker with Pakistani heritage, the film is set in the 90s in the heart of Silicon Valley and is loosely drawn from Khan’s own experiences while growing up, trying to navigate his Muslim side and just being a teenager.

“This [film] literally didn’t happen but it’s very true to what it felt like and what my experiences were,” Khan said while talking to the audience at the end of the last show on Mar. 18.

Illyas Khan, played by Atharva Verma, feels self-conscious about his mustache and wants to shave it off, but his parents insist that he keep it on. While he is going through early puberty, his parents

move him to a public high school. Already feeling awkward and now in a new setting Ilyas hatches a plan to make his parents put him

came from.

back into the Islamic school he

Khan shows Ilyas navigate through opposing feelings at home and in class. At home his three siblings, a hijab-clad mother who speaks mostly Urdu, and a dad who is struggling in his newly founded business surround him. At the high school, he faces initial coldness until he finds his passion in theater and that helps him break the ice with other classmates.

As Khan tries to show the warmth within the immigrant Pakistani American family and the Muslim community in general, he also shows a teenager trying to navigate puberty and feeling awkward and trying to fit in, something relatable to anyone in the audience.

Clueless star Alicia Silverstone plays Ilyas’s theater teacher who tells him to always be creative. How Ilyas takes on that advice wins all hearts around him, drawing laughter and accepting smiles is something to watch. The film maintains a feel of light comedy even in the tense moments making it as close to reality as possible.

The story goes through twists and turns identifiable by any family whether immigrant or native. At a key moment American comedian, actor, producer Hasan Minhaj makes an appearance drawing in the audience even further. Like any American dad or mom, Ilyas’s parents “Abu’’ played by Rizwan Manji and “Ami” played by Pakistani actress/singer Meesha Shafi try to give their best to their kids.

Khan said he had been working on the film since 2017 while he worked as a film editor during the day and developed Mustache on nights and weekends. Then in 2022, he quit his job and decided to take it on full time.

The initial draw of the film may have been the presence of Hollywood stars Alicia Silverstone and Hasan Minhaj, but the audience is drawn to every character even in a small role. Big brother played by Shaheryar Rana, and big sister played by Mojeane Sadr who Ilyas catches shaving off her upper lip are equally convincing.

Khan thanked the audience before the film began and brought in his wife, toddler kids and his parents to the premiere and shared their thoughts amid laughs.

“Honestly, I just hope people feel for this character and the story and relate to it no matter what background they come from, and to be able to relate to this Pakistani Muslim kid growing up, I think is really cool,” he said.

Ishaq Fahim Brings South Asian presence In poster Art At SXSW 2023

(Continued From Page 01)

Hailing from roots in Pakistan on his dad’s side and Mexico from his mom’s, Fahim is a creative at heart who expresses himself in different ways at different times.

He works with editors and content design, is a musician and a poster artist. He had his poster design hat on at SXSW.

“I started doing design work mostly for myself—self taught, very much influenced by my father, a self starter,” Fahim said.

Fahim’s father, an electrical engineer by profession, hails from a village near Gujrat, an industrial city close to Lahore in Pakistan.

Fahim who was born in the U.S.

would often see his dad explain the engineering side of things to him and his siblings.

That exposure to technical knowledge influences his poster art. Fahim loves color and shapes and how they relate to each other.

Fahim’s poster design journey began when his music band was going to play at an event.

“I started doing that for myself and when my friends saw it, they were like, hey, can you make one for our band? I was like, sure,” Fahim said.

Word got out and he started receiving orders for flyers.

At the same time he branched out into art prints right before Covid-19 pandemic hit Austin.

His art found a creative outlet when Austin FC commissioned local artists including Fahim to design posters for each of their home games.

When asked what the future holds, Fahim remained realistic.

“So in a way, I don’t know what the future looks like, but I kind of just set the right intention and work diligently and then expect to end up where I’m supposed to, in a way and that’s kind of like taking me there,” he said.

‘Be involved’: Elected Officials With South Asian Ties Deliver A Common Message To PACT

Elected Texas officials from local and state government have urged the South Asian community members in Austin to show up to voice their concerns to their elected representatives so their reps get to know them and keep the issues in mind when making decisions.

The officials spoke at a community forum organized by the Pakistani American Collaborative of Texas on Feb. 11.

“This is your city; your fingerprints should be everywhere,” said District 9 Council Member Zohaib Qadri, one of the four guests at the forum. Qadri was elected to the Austin City Council in Nov. and is serving his first term.

PACT, a Pakistani American political advocacy group, invited Qadri along with Texas State representatives Salman Bhojani, District 92

from Dallas, and Dr. Suleman Lanani, District 76 from Houston, and Austin Community College Place 4 Board of Trustee Sean Hasan to speak about issues that mattered to them.

All four officials who have ties to

their reps at the local and state level are doing.

“Make them accountable; ask them questions,” Dr. Lalani, who represents the Houston area, said. “We have that critical mass to do that.” Dr. Lalani has been in private

in the current legislative session on House Bill 1882.

The bill talks about designating certain religious holy days as optional holidays in Texas to also include Eid al-Adha, Diwali, Eid al-Fitr, Vaisakhi, Besak, Passover and All Saints Days in addition to already included Rosh Hashana, Yaum Kuipper and Good Friday.

Bhojani is an immigration attorney and a business owner who was born in Pakistan and moved to Texas as a teenager.

He did not become politically active until 2016 when Donald Trump became U.S. president, he said. “I decided to run for city council because I felt Muslims have been on the menu for far too long.”

Bhojani spoke about how he is answerable to his constituents who elected him.

him his own mother struggled with earning a living wage while raising her children.

“We just passed the $770 billion and have set aside $40 million for support services, notably child care centers on ACC campuses, so whether you’re taking classes, tutoring, or taking exams, you can drop your children off,” Hasan said.

PACT became more active in the 2020 election cycle and invited candidates to introduce themselves to its followers.

“Our objective is not just political, we also want to engage in civic and social advocacy,” Farooq Hussain, president of PACT board said, “We want Pakistani Americans to be an integral part of the society that we all belong to; we don’t want to be outside.”

Pakistan in some way, encouraged the attendees to read about what

“I wish this film had been around when I was a teenager; it would have been so helpful for understanding the experiences of Muslim kids I went to school with,” said one of the feedback comments posted by Director Imran J. Khan, on his Instagram.

“A lot more people that get elected, go back to their community and say I’m here to represent you, what can I do for you,” Bhojani said. “I’m doing this for the community, to really get feedback from them and see what I can do better for them and our youth.”

ACC Board of Trustee Sean Hasan, also a guest, shared information about scholarships available for students attending Austin Community College, and plans of expansion in a new dental hygienist program.

He also spoke about resources for childcare for parents attending classes at ACC, a subject dear to

3 Ways To Prep Your Home For Bug Season

(Continued From Page 05)

3. Safeguard the yard:

Defending your yard from pesky pests will not only improve the comfort of your home’s outdoor spaces, it will help prevent insects from finding their way indoors.

Be sure to eliminate standing water by properly tending to your lawn and by periodically clearing downspouts of debris.

Any water feature in your garden should use running water. If you have a patio or deck, consider screening it in.

If you don’t love the look of screened walls, installing ceiling fans can be an effective alternative.

Run the fans whenever you entertain to deter unwanted guests, such as mosquitos, from crashing the party.

Of course, it’s always a good idea to apply bug repellant when spending time outdoors.

Find a formula that will be easy to use, such as the new on-body products from Zevo, which include a pump spray, aerosol and lotion.

They offer eight hours of protection from mosquitoes and ticks and are lightweight, odorless and not sticky.

For more usage tips and more information, visit https://zevoinsect. com and follow on Facebook, TikTok and Instagram (@ZevoInsect).

“As we usher in gorgeous spring weather, it can be an especially challenging time of year to keep bugs at bay at home.

But with the right tools and strategies, you can help prevent and combat infestations as they arise,” says Klingman.

8 Yoga Poses To Relieve Constipation

Constipation is a common complaint. While medications and over-the-counter treatments can help, some people may be interested in alternative therapies, such as yoga.

For example, a 2015 studyTrusted Source of people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) determined that yoga could be a cost effective alternative therapy for the predominant symptoms of the condition, which are constipation and diarrhea. The researchers added that yoga might also help address other symptoms that IBS may bring, such as anxiety and fatigue. Some yoga postures can manipulate a person’s digestive tract and may help relieve constipation by encouraging the digestive tract to pass stool or gas.

Keep reading for more information on yoga poses that may help alleviate constipation. Some of these poses are more challenging than others. Be cautious when attempting these postures, and do not push yourself too hard. Some people may prefer to speak to a yoga instructor before attempting the more advanced postures.

1. Half Spinal Twist

People can try this posture while sitting on a yoga mat or other soft surface.

To perform the twist:

bring the arms out to the side in a T-position with palms down bend one leg at the knee while keeping the shoulders flat, gently let the bent leg drop over the other leg hold the pose for a few breaths, then repeat on the opposite side

3. Crescent Lunge Twist

The Crescent Lunge Twist is a standing pose that requires a person to be in a lunge position. This pose also involves twisting the torso, which may help promote a bowel movement.

out place the palms on the floor at the sides, next to the shoulders engage the abdominal muscles and legs lift the head slightly, and gently curl the neck backward press the palms into the floor, gently lift the shoulders and upper body up hold for several breaths release and lower the body back to the floor

5. Legs Up the Wall Pose

This pose is an inversion pose. This means that part of the person’s body will be upside down.

ward the chest hold the pose for a few breaths, then release

7. The Bow Pose

This pose strengthens all the abdominal muscles. According to the Yoga Institute, this pose is good for those experiencing gas and digestive problems as it puts pressure on the abdomen. This is one of the more advanced poses, so exercise caution when attempting it, and do not push your body too hard.

sit with the legs straight out in front of the body bend the right leg and place the right foot on the ground on the outside of the left leg, ideally near the knee bend the left leg and place it under or close to the buttocks place the left hand or elbow on or over the right knee and gently twist to face over the right shoulder hold the pose for a few breaths, then switch sides

2.

The supine twist also may help a person alleviate constipation. To perform this twist: lie flat on the back

To perform this twist: lunge forward with the right leg bent and the left leg straight place the hands into a prayer position and slowly bend the upper body toward the right knee, leading with the left shoulder hold the pose for a few breaths, then return to standing and start again with the opposite leg

The Cobra Pose does not require any twisting, but it could help alleviate other symptoms, such as gas.

To do this pose: sit on the floor close to a wall lower the back to the floor and with the hips as close to the wall as possible, walk the legs up against the wall use a folded towel or blanket under the hips to relieve discomfort, if necessary let the head rest on the floor place the arms wherever it feels comfortable stay in this position for as long as it feels comfortable release and gently roll to one side to get up

Connecting Those With Heart Defects To Needed Care

Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common birth defects and doctors and affected families can help ensure that individuals with CHDs receive lifelong congenital cardiac care to stay healthy.

In 2010, it was estimated that approximately 1 million children and 1.4 million adults were living with a CHD in the United States.

However, about 60% of individuals

with CHDs don’t see a congenital cardiology specialist after age 18 for follow-up.

Congenital cardi-

ology care is essential, even

for those who are not currently experiencing symptoms. In addition to the need to manage the CHD, affected individuals remain at risk for developing acquired cardiac conditions of adulthood.

These include a range of potentially serious conditions such as arrhythmias, atherosclerotic heart disease, congestive heart failure, endocarditis, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and pulmonary hypertension.

According to advocates, a primary care physician is often the only doctor a patient sees, making it critical that patients disclose their CHD to their their doctors, and for doctors to help ensure they get the specialized care they need to stay healthy and safe over the years.

“Although most individuals with CHDs require lifelong congenital cardiac care, many children and adults experience gaps in care for several years or more,” says Dr. Sherry Farr from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Whether these lapses are due to loss of insurance, financial barriers or an inaccurate belief that their heart defect has ‘been cured,’ physicians that these patients see for other reasons can facilitate continuity of cardiac care.”

Dr. Farr suggests that physicians start the conversation with patients by asking them if they ever had

heart problems.

After learning that a patient has a heart defect, they should then emphasize the need for continuous care, even in cases where patients feel well.

Doctors should be prepared to both explain the vital role of congenital cardiologists and provide a referral for a specialist in the area.

Patients with CHDs should share their health history at their appointment and be ready to ask questions and seek referrals.

The new CHD Awareness Toolkit from the American Academy of Pediatrics and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers resources to help physicians connect people with heart defects to the care they need.

It includes materials for pediatricians and family physicians (who treat children), internal medicine physicians and family physicians (who treat adults), obstetrician-gynecologists and emergency room physicians. To learn more or to download the toolkit, visit aap.org/ CHDcare.

People with heart defects need lifelong congenital cardiac care. By getting the conversation started, patients and physicians can help ensure continuity of care. (StatePoint)

World’s Highest Railway Bridge, Taller Than Eiffel Tower, To Open In J&K Soon

The Chenab railway bridge bridge connects Katra and Banihal and has reportedly cleared all the necessary tests.

Jammu and Kashmir will soon be able to boast of the world’s highest railway bridge, which is set to open soon over the Chenab river. Built at a height of 359 m (1,178 ft) over the river, the Chenab railway bridge soars above the Eiffel Tower in Paris by at least 35 metres.

Part of the 35,000 crore worth Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla

Railway Link (USBRL), the arch bridge lies between Bakkal and Kauri in the Reasi district, according to news agency ANI.

Estimated at 1,400 crore, the bridge connects Katra and Banihal and has cleared all the necessary tests.

The bridge is geared up for completion two decades after the project received the green signal in 2003.

Although the construction work began in 2004, it had to be halted from 2008-09 in lieu of safety of passengers due to high-velocity winds in the region.

Following delays over safety and stability issues, the contract was handed over in 2008. However, the project has missed many deadlines over the years.

Railway officials have now confirmed that track lane work over the bridge has started and is ready for commissioning.

Railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who inspected the bridge on Saturday, informed that two more tests of running a motor trolley and bolero customised rail operation will be held.

The safety checks that have been carried out so far include highvelocity winds test, extreme temperatures test, earthquake-prone test, and hydrological impacts due to rise in water level.

He added that the USBRL, which links Jammu with Srinagar, will be completed by December 2023 or

January 2024.

“…All the tests have been…successful. Now, the bridge is ready for operation. This is the greatest thing for J-K,” he said.

Calling the ‘world’s highest bridge an engineering marvel’, the minister said that work on the Chenab and Anji bridges are progressing

fast.

Work on the main arch was completed in April 2021, while the base was finished in November 2017, as per ANI.

The steel and concrete arch bridge completed a milestone in August 2022 with the completion of the overarch deck.

The bridge, which lies 42 kilometres from Reasi town, will be able to withstand winds with speeds up

to 260 kmph and will have a lifespan of 120 years, according to officials.

Reportedly, the construction of this bridge was the biggest civilengineering challenge faced by any railway project in India in recent times.

The USBRL project also holds the title of comprising other firsts like the longest railway tunnel (12.75 km) and the first cable-stayed bridge (Anji Khad bridge) in India.

The railway minister added that the Anji bridge will also be completed by August 2023 and available for commissioning by September.

Akbar And Birbal

The List Of Blinds

One day emperor Akbar decides to give almsi to all the visually chal-

lenged people in the kingdom. He orders his courtiers to make a list of all such people. The courtiers make the list ready and share it

with the emperor.

Akbar takes a look at the list and says, “Very well. Take this list to Birbal. Make sure that these people get good alms tomorrow at the bazaar.”

Birbal looks at the list, goes to Akbar and remarks, “Your majesty, this list is incomplete.” “What do you mean incomplete?” exclaims Akbar.

“Your majesty the list must be longer as we missed several such people. Give me a day’s time and I will prove it,” says Birbal.

Akbar agrees. The next day, Birbal takes a frame of an old cot, sits at the crossroads of the bazaar, and begins weaving the cot with a string. A servant stands next to Birbal with a pen and a scroll.

A courtier passing by the bazaar sees Birbal, asks, “Hey Birbal! What on earth are you doing?”

Birbal does not reply but mumbles to his servant, who then scribbles something on the scroll.

Soon, a crowd gathers around Birbal. Each time someone en-

quires Birbal, he mumbles to his servant, who then writes on the scroll. The news of Birbal’s antics reaches the court and Akbar arrives at the bazaar.

“What are you doing Birbal??” he asks. Without replying, Birbal continues to weave the cot, takes the scroll from the servant’s hand, and hands it over to Akbar.

“Here is the list of blinds your majesty.”

Akbar looks at it and is shocked to see his name at the very end of the list.

“What nonsense is this?! Why is my name on the list?” the irked emperor asks.

“Jahanpanah, you and all the others in the list asked me what I was doing despite it being evident that I was weaving my cot. So, don’t you all deserve a place on the list?”

Akbar understands his folly and bursts into laughter. “Well done Birbal. You just opened my eyes by proving me blind!” says the amused Akbar. (Courtesy: https:// www.momjunction.com/)

What Women Need To Know About Stroke Risks

It may not be widely known that women face unique risk factors for stroke throughout their lifetime. Things like pregnancy, preeclampsia and chronic stress can increase the risk for high blood pressure, a leading cause of stroke.

Cardiovascular disease, including stroke, is the leading cause of

120/80 mm HG or less.

In addition to properly monitoring blood pressure, maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active, eating healthfully and reducing or eliminating alcohol and tobacco usage can help control blood pressure. If you do develop high blood pressure, work with a

or constant stress may lead to high blood pressure and other unhealthy behavior choices, which can increase risk for stroke.

Based on findings in a Stress in America 2020 survey conducted by the American Psychological Association, the top sources of stress are money, work, family responsibilities and health concerns.

Managing your stress and blood pressure can improve your overall health and wellbeing. Reclaim control of your schedule and build in time to invest in your health. Find 10 minutes every day to do something for you, like listening to music, meditating or going for a walk.

Learn the Warning Signs

There’s more to maintaining a healthy heart than just eating right and exercising regularly. While these practices play an important role in both cardiovascular and overall health and well-being, getting a good night’s sleep is also key.

death among women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and 1 in 5 women will have a stroke. However, a large majority of strokes can be prevented.

Caring for yourself by understanding your risk factors can help reduce your risk for stroke and provide a better quality of life. Start managing your stroke risk with these tips from the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association:

Monitor Your Blood Pressure

The first step you can take in reducing your risk for stroke is knowing your blood pressure and keeping it in a healthy range. High blood pressure is the No. 1 preventable cause of stroke, according to the American Heart Association.

The best way to know your blood pressure is to have it measured at least once per year by a health care professional and regularly monitor it at home then discuss the numbers with a doctor. For most people, a normal blood pressure should be

Plan for Pregnancy

In the United States, high blood pressure during pregnancy is becoming more common, according to the CDC, and medical conditions including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and blood clots during pregnancy all increase stroke risk during and immediately following a pregnancy.

Managing conditions like high blood pressure before getting pregnant helps keep you and your baby healthy during pregnancy and beyond. In addition, your health during and immediately after a pregnancy can shape the lifelong health of you and your child. If you’re planning to become pregnant or are currently pregnant, it’s important to regularly monitor your blood pressure.

“Getting a good night’s sleep every night is vital to cardiovascular health,” said Donald M. LloydJones, M.D., Sc.M., FAHA, past volunteer president of the American Heart Association and chair of the department of preventive medicine, the Eileen M. Foell Professor of Heart Research and professor of preventive medicine, medicine and pediatrics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. “Adults should aim for an average of 7-9 hours, and babies and kids need more depending on their age.” However, more than 1 in 3 adults in the United States are not getting the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition to increasing risk for cardiovascular conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, heart attack and stroke, lack of sleep may also put people at risk of depression, cognitive decline, diabetes and obesity.

While high blood pressure - a known risk factor of cardiovascular disease, the No. 1 cause of death worldwide - can run in families, it is more common in non-Hispanic Black adults (56%) than in non-Hispanic white adults (48%), non-Hispanic Asian adults (46%) or Hispanic adults (39%). Healthy lifestyle behaviors, including sleep, can help prevent the condition. “We know that people who get adequate sleep manage other health factors better as well, such as weight, blood sugar and blood pressure,” Lloyd-Jones said. “The American Heart Association added sleep to the list of factors that support optimal cardiovascular health. We call these Life’s Essential 8, and they include: eating a healthy diet, not smoking or vaping, being physically active and getting adequate sleep along with controlling your blood pressure and maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol

and lipids, healthy blood sugar levels and a healthy weight.” What’s more, falling asleep at different times or sleeping an inconsistent number of hours each night, even variations of more than two hours a night within the same week, may also increase the risk of atherosclerosis, which is a cardiovascular condition where plaque builds up in the arteries, in those age 45 and older, according to research published in the “Journal of the American Heart Association.”

“Maintaining regular sleep schedules and decreasing variability in sleep is an easily adjustable lifestyle behavior that can not only help improve sleep, but also help reduce cardiovascular risk for aging adults,” said study lead author Kelsie Full, Ph.D., M.P.H., an assistant professor of medicine in the division of epidemiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Education about healthy heart habits from the American Heart Association is nationally supported by Elevance Health Foundation. Some practices to improve sleep health and impact heart health include:

Observe Current Sleep Habits

Keeping a sleep diary to help track your sleep patterns and habits can make it easier to identify factors that may be helping - or hurtingyour sleep quality. Monitor what time you go to bed, what time you wake up in the morning, how many times you woke up during the night, how you felt when you woke up and any variables, such as changes to your routine or sleeping arrangements. Having documentation over the course of several weeks can help you identify necessary changes.

Avoid Food and Beverage Close to Bedtime

It can be more difficult to fall asleep if you’re still digesting dinner. To help reduce sleep disruptions caused by food, avoid late dinners and minimize fatty and spicy foods. Similarly, keep an eye on caffeine intake and avoid it later in the day when it can be a barrier to falling asleep.

6 Steps to Get Better Sleep and Improve Heart Health

(Continued From Page 20)

Exercise Regularly

Physical activity during the day can have a noticeable impact on overall health and wellness but can also make it easier to sleep at night as it can initiate changes in energy use and body temperature. However, exercising too close to bedtime may hinder your body’s ability to settle; aim to have your workout complete at least four hours before you plan to head to bed.

Establish a Bedtime Routine

Getting a good night’s rest often requires getting into a routine. Start by setting an alarm to indicate it’s time to start winding down. Rather than heading straight to bed, take time to create a to-do list for the following day and knock out a few small chores. Then consider implementing a calming activity like meditating, journaling or reading (not on a tablet or smartphone) before drifting off to sleep. Also set an alarm to wake each morning, even on weekends, and avoid hitting the snooze button to keep your biological rhythms synced.

Avoid Tech Before Bed

The bright light of televisions, computers and smartphones can mess with your Circadian rhythm and keep you alert when you should be winding down. Try logging off electronic devices at least one hour before bedtime and use the “do not disturb” function to avoid waking up to your phone throughout the night. Better yet, charge devices away from your bed or in another room entirely.

(Continued From Page 01) Dhampa Rinpoche - The eight-year-old USborn child is the son of a university professor and the grandson of a former Mongolian member of parliament. He has a twin brother. He has dual nationality. Reports claimed that the Dalai Lama institution in Dharamshala is tight-lipped over the real identity of the new Mongolian Tibetan leader as they feel he would be targeted by the Chinese regime. Meanwhile, pointing to the small boy sitting to his left, the Dalai Lama told the gathering, “We have the reincarnation of Khalkha Jetsun Dhampa Rinpoche of Mongolia with us today. His predecessors had a close association with the Krishnacharya lineage of Chakrasamvara. One of them established a monastery in Mongolia dedicated to its practice. So, his being here today is quite auspicious.” As the session came to a close on that day, the Dalai Lama met briefly with a significant contingent of Mongolians who are patrons of this teaching. “Tantra spread widely in Tibet. With regard to Chakrasamvara, the Ghantapada and Luipa traditions were popular, but this Krishnacharya lineage was quite rare. I received it from Tagdrag Rinpoche and have long felt a close affinity for the practice. “Chakrasamvara is classified as a mother tantra. It belongs to the highest yoga tantras. While Guhyasamaja emphasises the illusory body, Chakrasamvara focuses on the clear light. However, if you make the illusory body your primary practice, the clear light also arises. “As I said, I feel a close affinity to the Krishnacharya tradition. I have received the empowerment and undertaken the requisite retreat. This may seem somewhat boastful, but I also feel I have some connection with the great Mahasiddha Krishnacharya. This empowerment requires the preliminary practices that we’ll do today. I’ve done the self-generation and visualised myself as Chakrasamvara.” (IANS Inputs) (Courtesy: https://www.timesnownews.com/)

Research Shows New Car Safety Features Can Help with Crash Reduction

At a time when highway fatalities are on the rise, new research shows that the widespread adoption of the latest vehicle safety features could mean fewer crashes and safer roads. However, it could be awhile before we see the full benefits of these advancements.

“With drivers holding onto their vehicles for 10 years or more, it could take many years before the fleet fully turns over,” says Rini

Spring Cleaning: Don’t Toss That ‘Junk,’ It May Be Valuable!

and nearly 60% of moderate to serious injuries could be mitigated. At the same time, the research also identified what types of crashes are likely to still occur even if these safety features were deployed.

The research center has made the study’s data, found at toyota.com/CSRC, publicly available so that automakers, policymakers, technology research universities and tech

It’s time to hit the garage, basement, attic and closets for that age-old task of spring cleaning! Before hauling unwanted possessions to the curb, you may be surprised to learn they might be valuable -- especially if you have sports cards and memorabilia gathering dust. With prices of sports cards rising in recent years, take time to determine if yours are valuable and how to best sell them.

“Older sports cards and memorabilia aren’t just highly collectible; they can be worth lots of money. Recent sales of scarce vintage cards have topped anywhere from thousands of dollars to tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands. And really rare cards can go higher,” says Al Crisafulli, Auction Director at Love of the Game Auctions, an internet sports auction house that helps families identify and sell valuable items.

lectors specializing in sports. More information is available at loveofthegameauctions. com.

Postcards and Photographs

We all have keepsakes of vacation destinations, but most aren’t valuable. However, photographs and postcards depicting sports stars and ballparks can be significant. Look for early “real photo” postcards from the 1900s through the 1940s, which are photographs printed on postcard backs. As with sports cards, star power matters, so preserve those Babe Ruths as opposed to images of your great grandma’s baby cousin once-removed. And when it comes to photos, look for old markings on the back, such as photographer, publication and date stamps.

Sherony, senior principal engineer, Toyota Collaborative Safety Research Center.

But what if every vehicle on the road was fully equipped with crash-prevention features? And how do engineers identify which new vehicle safety features to prioritize next?

To find out, Toyota Collaborative Safety Research Center and Virginia Tech teamed up to research the potential benefits that different safety systems have in various crash scenarios.

The team took real-world crashes and reconstructed the data, performing multiple crash simulations.

They started modeling with more traditional “passive” safety features, like the latest vehicle structures, and extended their work to include such technologies as automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot warning, etc.

Assuming full deployment and optimal activation of safety features, such as those that were modeled, their research showed that over half of all U.S. crashes could be avoided

companies can work together to continue to make safety gains and fill the crash prevention gap.

“While drivers can’t avoid every danger on the road, our research shows that safety systems have the potential to be very effective in reducing the risk and severity of crashes,” says Sherony.

“It’s important to know that most automakers offer features like lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, audio warnings and steering assist (often with additional functionality).

When you search for your next car, consider these features, even possibly opting for those that do not come standard-equipped.

We hope that as drivers continue to adopt and use such technologies, we will be able to realize more of the accident mitigation and prevention benefits that they can offer, resulting in safer roads for everybody.”

Crisafulli has assisted people in selling such keepsakes as a grandparent’s autograph collection and an uncle’s childhood baseball cards, for tens of thousands of dollars. In one life-changing event, he helped a family determine that a baseball bat that spent decades protecting their home was used by Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig -- and Love of the Game Auctions sold it for almost half a million dollars. Today, that bat could bring more than a million dollars.

The key is understanding what makes old sports collectibles valuable. To help, Crisafulli is sharing some tips:

Older is Usually Pricier

Cards from the 1960s and earlier are collectible, and those from before the 1940s can be worth a lot of money, especially those depicting stars. Do you have cards of Hall of Famers, such as Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner or Ty Cobb? Even non-stars from the early days of a sport can be worth big bucks, especially if the cards have no creases and retain sharp corners and original gloss. If you have very old cards from the 1880s through the 1930s, look for tobacco, gum and candy brands, such as Old Judge, Piedmont, Sweet Caporal, Goudey or American Caramel. If you want to sell sports items for the most money, consider a specialty auction, such as Love of the Game, which has the expertise to properly research sports ephemera and maintains bidder lists of col-

Set aside old advertising posters depicting sports stars and food, tobacco or sporting goods brands. Ads from magazines aren’t valuable, but those used as store displays and for other marketing purposes can be pricey.

Tin signs from the 1960 and earlier can be highly prized, but reproductions aren’t. Your family’s sporting goods, such as balls, gloves and bats, can be valuable. Pre-1950s uniforms and catcher’s masks, helmets and other equipment are highly collected, especially when endorsed by star players. Top condition brings the highest prices, but even used equipment can be valuable. “The golden rule is the older the sports card or item, the more valuable it usually is. Pre-1975 pieces start to get interesting and are worth researching,” says Crisafulli. Don’t just clean out your “junk” this spring, examine it closely to potentialy maximize its value.

millionaire growth rate of 102% from 2012 to 2022.

In December 2022, Austin was home to 30,500 millionaires, 86 centi-millionaires, and nine billionaires.

Over the years, Austin has emerged as a tech hub. Companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, SpaceX, and Tesla have expanded their presence in the city. In 2019, Apple invested $1 billion to build a new campus.

Thanks to that influx, Austin has also become a growth market for luxury real estate, according to Henley and Partner’s 2023 wealth report.

A recent Bankrate report states that the median sale price for a home in Austin as of January 2023 was $530,000, according to Redfin data.

rectly identify financial solutions with tax advantages, despite one in three saying they prioritize investments that would help them pay less in taxes either now or in the future.

“Lincoln’s research shows consumers are under-educated about tax strategy and taxefficient investments, revealing a disconnect between aspirations and actions,” said David Berkowitz, president, Lincoln Financial Network, the wealth management arm of Lincoln Financial Group, which provides advice and guidance through its network of independent financial professionals. “Consulting a financial professional and learning more about products and solutions can grow one’s confidence in their financial decisions.”

While not intended to be legal or tax advice, Lincoln Financial Group recommends considering the following five tax-efficient strategies as part of a holistic financial plan:

1. Contribute to a workplace retirement account. Pretax contributions to an employersponsored retirement savings plan will reduce total taxable income and allow savings to grow tax deferred. A good rule of thumb is to save at least 10% to 15% of your pay, but if that feels out of reach, start wherever possible and increase contributions a little each year to see big changes in total savings over time. Remember to save up to the employer match, if one is offered.

2. Explore the value of lifetime income. At a time when people are living longer and face greater risks to their savings, an annuity can provide protected guaranteed monthly income that can last a lifetime. Taxes on the gains aren’t paid until the money is withdrawn, so interest can be earned on the

3. Prepare for unexpected long-term care costs. The greatest changes to income and lifestyle may result from an unexpected long-term health care event. Different solutions can help provide a cushion, and many of these benefits are income tax-free. Understanding the various policies is the first step in helping ensure you’ll receive needed care without passing a financial burden on to family or loved ones.

4. Diversify a portfolio with life insurance. Adding cash value life insurance to a larger financial plan can help protect savings and provide an income tax-free death benefit for your beneficiaries, as well as tax-deferred growth opportunities.

It can also offer advantages that help meet goals at every stage of life, including funding a child’s education costs; strengthening retirement savings; creating additional cash flow; and protecting wealth for future generations. Keep in mind that if loans or withdrawals are taken from the policy, it will reduce the value of the death benefit and other payouts, as well as have potential tax consequences.

5. Work with a financial professional. According to Lincoln’s study, just 1 in 5 U.S. adults feels very confident about making financial decisions to minimize exposure to taxes, yet 47% say they are more concerned about the impact of taxes on their retirement savings due to the current market. A financial professional can help tailor a holistic plan to your needs, as well as provide education about various insurance and retirement solutions.

“Ongoing challenges like market volatility, inflation and changing tax laws have the potential to hit wallets hard,” said Berkowitz. “That’s why tax-efficient investing is an important aspect of financial planning that can help you build wealth and achieve your financial goals.” (StatePoint)
