Baños de Agua Santa is an Ecuadorian city of great importance for the country that is located in the province of Tungurahua only 180 km from Quito and 35 km from Ambato.This tourist city is located in a valley with wonderful waterfalls and hot springs next to the volcano “Tungurahua” with a height of 5,016 meters. This Canton offers to the large number of tourists the opportunity to rest in its pools of thermal waters and spas, adventures for the whole family or extreme sports such as rafting, climbing, canyoning, canopy, trekking, mountain biking or bungee jumping.

Baños de Agua Santa, Ecuadorian city belonging to the province of Tungurahua 45 minutes from Ambato in the Andean region, for this reasons it is 2000 meters high offering a beautiful cold and fresh climate and many wonders among them (crafts, gastronomy, places tourism, clothing and especially its culture) has become a favorite place for many foreigners as well as locals who are constantly visiting and enjoying everything that Baños can offer them. In Ecuador dollarization favors the external tourist because it avoids exchange rates having a more optimal trip and doing it with many adventures to explore.

This beautiful city is located in the foothills of Tungurahua that has an elevation of 5000 m above sea level and has a population of approximately 12 thousand people, people full of joy and kindness which are typical characteristics of Ecuadorians, every December 3rd a parade is held in honor of the city of Baños, where you can see traditional folkloric dances, folkloric, becoming a complete carnival. But there is much more to it since they also merge with a gastronomic fair where tourists taste diverse local dishes.

Esta ciudad turística se encuentra ubicada en un valle con unas maravillosas cascadas y aguas termales a lado del volcán “Tungurahua” con una altura de 5.016 metros. Este Cantón ofrece a la gran cantidad de turistas descansar en sus piscinas de aguas termales y spas, aventura para toda la familia o deportes extremos como rafting, escaladas, canyoning, canopy, trekking, mountain biking o puenting (bungee jumping).

Baños de Agua Santa , ciudad Ecuatoriana perteneciente a la provincia de Tungurahua a 45 minutos de Ambato en la región Andina por ello esta a 2000 metros de altura ofreciendo un hermoso clima frio y fresco e infinidad de´maravillas entre ellas ( artesanías , gastronomía , sitios turísticos , vestimenta y sobre todo su cultura ) así ha venido convirtiéndose en lugar favorito de muchos tanto de extranjeros como de locales quienes están en constante visita y deleite de todo lo que les puede ofrecer Baños . Y es que en Ecuador la dolarización favorece al turista externo ya que evita tasas de cambio teniendo un viaje más óptimo y haciéndolo con muchas aventura por explorar.

Esta hermosa ciudad se encuentra ubicada en las faldas del Tungurahua que tiene una elevación de 5000 m de altura sobre el nivel del mar y cuenta con una población de 12 mil personas aproximadamente , gente llena de alegría y amabilidad que son características típicas de los Ecuatorianos , cada 3 de diciembre se realiza el desfile en honor a la cantonización de Baños , donde se puede apreciar bailes tradicionales , folclóricos , comparas convirtiéndose en un completo carnaval . Pero no todo queda allí puesto que se fusionan también ferias gastronómicas , artesanales donde los turistas degustan .

Vamos a hacer la Minga en Toronto!

Acabo de regresar de Ecuador, país andino en donde todavía prevalece cultura indígena y en donde se usan muchas practicas indígenas en el día a día. Cuales son los países Andinos?

Pues son los países por donde pasa la cordillera de los Andes en Sur América. Una de las palabras que me atrajo mucho es “La Minga”, que es la Minga?

Preguntando a los adultos mayores, ellos cuentan con mucha emoción como era cuando llamaban a una Minga y también con pena ya que cada vez se practica menos. We’re going to do the Minga in Toronto!

I have just returned from Ecuador, an Andean country where indigenous culture still prevails and where many indigenous practices are used on a daily basis. What are the Andean countries?

Well, they are the countries where the Andes mountain range passes through in South America. One of the words that attracted me very much was “La Minga”, what is the Minga?

Asking older adults, they speak with a lot of excitement about what it was like when they called for a Minga and also with grief because they practice it less as time goes by. My grandfather Carlos tells me, “Every time that the Minga was called, it was done one or two weeks in advance and this event was the main topic of discussion among the community, generally the Minga lasted a day or two and each family had to donate food, chickens, bread, chicha for the common table where the whole community ate the same without discriminating against anyone. “

¿Jazz en Música Latina? ¿O Música Latina en Jazz?

Garcia Algunas historiadores argumentar que el “verdadero jazz” oficialmente murió con el nacimiento de la música rock, justo después de los años más duros en la historia de los Estados Unidos con hechos como la segregación racial, la Gran Depresión, ambas Guerras Mundiales, y parte de la Guerra Fría, no es sorprendente que la gente haya decidido cambiar la manera de ver su mundo de manera radical, en un intento de olvidar el doloroso pasado. En ese instante, las nuevas generaciones acuñaron el término de “música vieja” a lo que fuera jazz.

Muy pronto después la popularidad del jazz caería dramáticamente, con excepciones en bares y clubes de la escena neoyorqui-

na y de Nueva Orleans (“Jazz is Dead (Commercially), Long Live Jazz (Creatively, 2009)). En un intento de traer el jazz a audiencias más grandes, algunos músicos decidieron hacer el jazz más audible añadiendo instrumentos electrónicos, creando nuevos estilos tales como el “”Smooth Jazz”, fusión que probablemente hayas oído en canciones como “”Careless Whisper” de George Michael.

La música latina, por otro lado, siempre floreció gracias a sus influencias africanas e indígenas, alcanzando un hito en nuestra identidad cultural que muchas otras culturas no lograron.

La música latina nunca vaciló, a pesar de la globalización y otros géneros como el Reggaetón y el Latin pop, que emergieron de una aproximación más americana de nuestra música, enfocada hacia audiencias más jóvenes. E incluso así, muchos todavía escuchan los mismos clásicos que salieron hace 30 e incluso 50 años, las canciones de Gilberto Santa Rosa son buen ejemplos. ¿Pero, cómo pueden dos géneros musicales estar conectados tanto uno con el otro? Uno no puede mezclar música clásica y música rap y esperar tener una gran audiencia a la cual apelar, ya que una audiencia tan específica es raramente encontrada. Y aun

así, la música latina y el jazz de alguna manera lograron esto, con la fusión ocurriendo en Cuba, en los 40s, y Brasil en los 50s. El jazz afro-cubano se originó de una salsa basada en ritmos pulsantes y del bebop (jazz caracterizado por notas rápidas). Músicos vieron la fusión de los géneros como una gran mejora de las artes, decidiendo incluir el jazz en la salsa de manera definitiva.

Desafortunadamente, después de ver el declive del jazz en los Estados Unidos, los músicos cubanos adoptaron nuevamente el concepto principal de la salsa, la salsa y el jazz no volverían a juntarse formalmente sino hasta finales de los 90 (“Distinguishing Between Latin Jazz and Salsa”, 2007). Desde entonces, el jazz ha sido abundante en estilos modernos de la música latinoamericana, un ejemplo sería el grupo “Guaco” de Venezuela, quienes venían de un pasado de salsa y merengue y en los últimos años han implementado el jazz en sus nuevas obras. El jazz también ha absorbido una parte de nuestra música, a través de la implementación de las congas cubanas y de técnicas musicales tales como los montunos y los clavés .

A diferencia de la Salsa, el jazz brasileño ha sido muy consistente a través de los años y en los medios y la cultura pop, la idea de Brasil es acompañada de

una fusión de la samba, el pop, y el jazz, tal género serían las bossa novas, un ejemplo sería el hit de Antonio Carlos Jobim “Chica de Ipanema”. El bossa nova se clasifica hoy en día como jazz moderno, debido a su sonido refinado y de salón, y ha habido incontables dedicatorias al género, como el álbum de Ella Fitzgerald “Ella”. A pesar de que hay gente que piensa que la música brasileña no es música latina, la salsa y la bossa nova son reconocidas por representar bien la música latinoamericana internacionalmente.

Si haces un poco de investigación en el campo te darás cuenta que la salsa contemporánea, las bossa novas, el merengue, la bachata, el tango e incluso el reggaetón que escuchas hoy en día se mezclan con sonidos de jazz, y al mismo tiempo, el jazz moderno busca expandir sus fronteras, incorporando conceptos de la música latinoamericana. A medida que la popularidad del jazz cae, la necesidad de obtener nuevas ideas toma un lugar importante en la supervivencia del jazz, que a pesar de ser un opuesto de la música latina, es sin lugar a dudas prueba de que dos ideas diferentes pueden coexistir en una. Cómo el autor Seth Colter Walls menciona en su artículo: el Jazz murió en la música comercial, pero sigue vivo dentro del espíritu de otros géneros.

Jazz in Latin Music? Or Latin Music in Jazz? By: Luis M. Soon after the popularity of jazz would drop dramatically, with exceptions in bars and clubs on the New York and New Orleans scene (“Jazz is Dead (Commercially), Long Live Jazz (Creatively, 2009)). In an attempt to bring jazz to larger audiences, some musicians decided to make jazz more audible by adding electronic instruments, creating new styles such as the “Smooth Jazz” fusion you’ve probably heard in songs like “Careless Whisper “by George Michael .

Latin American music, on the other hand, always flourished thanks to its African and indigenous influences, reaching a milestone in our cultural identity that many other cultures did not achieve. Latin American music never wavered, despite globalization and other genres such as Reggaetón and Latin pop, which emerged from a more American approach to our music, focused on younger audiences. And even so, many still hear the same classics that came out 30 or even 50 years ago, Gilberto Santa Rosa’s songs are good examples.

But how can two musical genres be connected with each other?

One cannot mix classical music and rap music and hope to have a large audience to appeal to, since such a specific audience is rarely found. And still, Latin American music and jazz somehow achieved this, with the fusion occurring in Cuba in the 40s and Brazil in the 50s. Afro-Cuban jazz originated from a salsa based on pulsating rhythms and bebop (jazz characterized by quick notes). Musicians saw the fusion of the genres as a great improvement of the arts, deciding to include jazz in salsa definitively. Unfortunately, after seeing the decline of jazz in the United States, Cuban musicians once again adopted the main concept of salsa, salsa and jazz would not be reunited formally until the late 90s (“Distinguishing Between Latin Jazz and Salsa “, 2007). Since then, jazz has been abundant in modern styles of Latin American music, an example would be the group “Guaco” from Venezuela, who came from a past of salsa and merengue and in recent years have implemented jazz in their new works. Jazz has also absorbed a part of our music, through the implementation of Cuban congas and musical techniques such as montunos and clavés.

Unlike Salsa, Brazilian jazz has been very consistent over the years and in the media and pop culture, the idea of Brazil is accompanied by a fusion of samba, pop, and jazz, such a genre would be the Bossa Novas, an example would be Antonio Carlos Jobim’s hit “Chica de Ipanema”. Bossa Nova is now classified as modern jazz, due to its refined and lounge sound, and there have been countless dedications to the genre, such as Ella Fitzgerald’s album “Ella”. Although there are people who think that Brazilian music is not Latin American music, Salsa and Bossa Nova are well known for representing Latin American music internationally.

If you do a little research in the field you will notice that contemporary Salsa, Bossa Novas, Merengue, Bachata, Tango, even Reggaetón that you hear today mix with jazz sounds, and at the same time, modern jazz seeks to expand borders, incorporating concepts of Latin American music. As the popularity of jazz falls, the need to obtain new ideas takes an important place in the survival of jazz, which despite being the opposite of Latin music, is without a doubt proof that two different ideas can coexist in one. As author Seth Colter Walls mentions in his article: Jazz died in commercial music, but still lives within the spirit of other genres.

Reconectándote a tus orígenes POR: MARIANA J. Crecer en Canadá ha sido genial.

Tener la oportunidad de estudiar, aprender sobre diferentes países, idiomas y culturas, participar en una sociedad que está unida y tiene orgullo de ser llamada canadiense.

Nacida en un país latino americano y adaptándome a mi entorno al migrar a Canadá, comencé a preguntarme ¿en qué medida me he convertido en canadiense a lo largo de los años? ¿He estado descuidando mi pasado estando o no consciente de ello?

Al igual que los estereotipos básicos de un canadiense, disfruto los panqueques con jarabe de maple sobre ellos, disfruto de los deportes y apoyo a los equipos canadienses, y hablo inglés más que mi primer idioma. Hablar mi primer idioma me resultaba extraño e incómodo.

Nunca fue vergonzoso hablar en un idioma “extranjero”; simplemente se sentía fuera de lugar.

Recuerdo venir a Canadá con una mentalidad diferente. Todos los que conocía en mi tierra natal eran una familia para mí. Solo sabía de una cultura y un idioma. A medida que paso el tiempo viviendo en Canadá, conocí personas cuyas vidas eran muy diferentes a las mías. Había todo tipo de cosas que aprender de quienes me rodeaban. Poder encontrar a otros que también vinieron

a Canadá siempre fue interesante.

Con el paso del tiempo, se volvió normal y natural sentirme identificada como canadiense.

Luché para conectarme con personas de mi país de origen cada vez que lo visitaba. Según mi opinión, la familia y los amigos habían cambiado, y sentí que también ellos notaban un cambio en mí. Estaban haciendo diferentes actividades y se adaptaron a su propia forma de vida. Se volvió más difícil sentirme identificada con mi pasado. Ahora, reflexionando sobre esos eventos pasados, obviamente nunca me desconecté de mi pasado. Simplemente, el tiempo se congeló. Me quedé en el momento en que salí de mi país en busca de una vida mejor. En lugar de seguir adelante y abrazar de dónde vengo, decidí adaptarme y encontrar un lugar en la comunidad canadiense.

Tengo amigos que también se sienten desconectados del lugar donde ellos o sus padres son o se sienten presionados para comportarse y actuar de acuerdo con los estándares de ese país mientras viven en Canadá.

Para mejorar y seguir adelante, es hora de desafiarme a mí misma para reconectarme con mis orígenes haciendo las cosas más simples y pequeñas, como asegurarme de no perder mi lengua materna y

poder seguir el ritmo de los cambios en ella. Hoy en día hay muchas aplicaciones gratuitas disponibles para descargar que comienzan con los conceptos básicos o en un nivel intermedio. Puedes ir a tu propio ritmo. Al aprender lo básico, se vuelve más fácil hablar y conversar con personas que conocen y hablan el idioma. Le ayudará a comprender los términos y la jerga que se usan comúnmente. Leer las noticias y aprender sobre los eventos que ocurren lo ayudará a estar informado, abrirá su perspectiva del mundo y lo mantendrá actualizado. Con la ayuda de las redes sociales, puede buscar tendencias en su país de nacimiento, como el tipo de música, comida, estilo de moda, celebridades y más.

Parece un pequeño problema que puede solucionarse fácilmente con poco esfuerzo. Reconnecting to Origins POR: MARIANA J. Growing up in Canada has been great. Having the opportunity to study, learn about different countries, languages, and cultures. Engaging in a society that is united and has pride in being called Canadian.

Being born in a Latin country and adapting to my surroundings once I migrated to Canada, I began to question how Canadian have I become over the years? Have I been neglecting my background whether I was conscious or not about it?

Like the basic stereotypes of a Canadian, I enjoy pancakes with maple syrup over them, I enjoy sports and support the Canadian teams, and I speak English more than my first language. Speaking my first language felt strange and awkward. It was never embarrassing to speak in a “foreign” language; it just felt out of place.

I recall coming to Canada with a different mindset. Everyone I knew back home was a family to me. I only knew of one culture and one language. As time passed by living in Canada, I met people whose lives were very different than my own.

There were all kinds of things to learn from those around me. Being able to find others who also came

to Canada was always interesting.

As time passed by, it became normal and natural to feel identified as a Canadian.

I struggled to connect with people from my home country whenever I would visit. According to me family and friends had changed, and I felt like the also noticed a change in me.

They were doing different activities and were adapted to their own way of life. It became harder to feel identified by my background. Now, reflecting on those past events, I obviously was never disconnected from my background. Simply, time froze.

I stayed in the moment of when I left my country in pursuit of a better life. Rather than moving forward and embracing where I come from, I decided to adapt and find a place in the Canadian community. I have friends who also feel disconnected to where they or their parents are from or feel pressured to behave and act accordingly to the country’s standards while living in Canada.

To improve and move forward, it is time to challenge myself in reconnecting to my origins by doing the smallest and simplest things like ensuring I don’t lose my mother tongue and are able to keep up

with changes in it. Today there are many free apps available to download that start with the basics or at an intermediate level. You can go at your own pace. Through learning the basics it becomes easier to talk and have a conversation with people who know and speak the language. It will help you grasp the terms and slang that are commonly used. Reading the news and learning about events that occur will help you be informed, it will open your perspective on the world and keep you updated. With the help of social media, you can search what is trending in your birth country like the type of music, food, fashion style, celebrities, and more.

It sounds like a little problem that can easily be fixed with little effort.

It is most likely easy but sticking with the mindset to change and continue reconnecting when you are on autopilot in your everyday routine is the hard part. Another thing to remember is that it is okay to mix both cultures. Canada embraces being different. Instead of trying to fit in, it is important to acknowledge that everyone is different and there is no need to neglect your background.

The origen of the Traditional Weaving Of Ecuadorian Toquilla Straw Hats is located in Manabi, Ecuador during the Prehispanic era.

Ceramic figurines in cultures such as Manteña, Jama – Coaque, Bahia, Milagro – Quevedo, and Chorrera exhibit on their heads versions of this type of hats.

During the XIX century the toquilla straw hat’s exportation generated an ecomic bonanza to the country, it was known as the “toquillero boom”. In 1854 the exportation of the toquilla straw hat surpassed the cacao’s. The toquilla straw hat was promoted in the Exhibition World in Paris, 1855, Napoleon III and Edward VII gave fame to the hat. Europe and USA started requesting it.

Political leaders and people from the show business started wearing them, becoming a fashion trend. It was considered the Prince among the straw hats; in 1863, 500,000 hats were exported from Guayaquil port.

Eloy Alfaro, the hero of Ecuadorian liberalism, financed his revolutions with this toquilla Ecuadorian hat’s exportation that in many parts of the world is known as “Panama Hat”.

During the construction of the Panama Canal workers wore the hats to protect themselves from the sun, this generated a big demand of the hat. When Theodore Roosevelt visited the canal a picture of him wearing the hat increased the toquilla hat’s popularity.

The acknowledgement of the “Traditional Weaving of the Ecuadorian Toquilla Straw Hat” as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity recognize the communities involved in this craftsmanship that had been transmitted from one generation to another, as well as a compromise from them to continue with the transmission of this knowledge and practices related to the toquilla straw hat. Currently, this tradition is maintained by the Manabí, Santa Elena, Cañar and Azuay’s provinces inhabitants.

Founder of “Las Hijas de la Libertad” Blanca Canales was a Puerto Rican nationalist who fought against the imperialist ocupation of her country, one that continues to subjugate it until today. Along with many others Canales lead the Jayuya rebellion, despite being un successful Canales and her allies were able to inspire many to fight for the independence of their island.

Roberto Gómez Bolaños, better known as “Chespirito” was a Mexican director, actor and comedian. His most famous work “El Chavo del Ocho” touched millions of homes throughout Latin America. His wit as a little shakespear or “Chespirito” led him to create a humor acclaimed to date, many other works of his time took inspiration from his methods of making comedy.

Chespirito died on November 28, 2014 of a cardiac arrest, but left many teaching to generations of people.

Fundadora de “Las Hijas de la Libertad” Blanca Canales fue una nacionalista puertorriqueña que luchó contra la ocupación imperialista de su país, que continúa subyugándola hasta hoy. Julia de Burgos was a poet, teacher,journalist and an epitome.

During her life time she was a proud and outstanding feminist whom through her writing expressed her passion towards women’s rights with empowering phrases like “I am life, strength,the woman.”. She was a feminist at a time and place when it was not encouraged. She fought against the traditional roles women where restricted to both in her country and in the United States. On July 6 1953 was found in New York city’s concrete floor and taken to the hospital. Soon after she passed away from pneumonia. She passed away but leaving behind a legacy of inspiration and insight along with Latin pride that continues to commode people today.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento , better known as Pele is Brazilian former football player. Regarded as the best soccer player of all time, Pele retired from profesinal soccer on October 1st 1977.

His impressive record holds many acomplishments such as the Guiness World Record for most FIFA World Cup Winners Medals and the Brazil national football team All-time Leading Scorer with 77 goals.

Durante su vida fue una feminista orgullosa y sobresaliente que a través de sus escritos expresó su pasión por los derechos de las mujeres con frases de empoderamiento como “Yo soy la vida, la fuerza, la mujer”. Ella era una feminista en un momento y lugar cuando no se fomentaba. Luchó contra los roles tradicionales que las mujeres tenían restringidas tanto en su país como en los Estados Unidos. El 6 de julio de 1953 fue encontrado en el piso de concreto de la ciudad de Nueva York y llevado al hospital. Poco después ella falleció de neumonía. Ella falleció, pero dejando atrás un legado de inspiración y perspicacia junto con el orgullo latino que continúa imitando a la gente de hoy.

Está claro que los quince años han tenido una gran evolución durante los últimos años pero aun así siempre seguirá siendo la experiencia que muchas niñas suenan y desean desde la infancia.

Estas jóvenes relatan que es el regalo perfecto donde sus relativos y amigos le demuestran todo su amor y cariño, este evento el cual impacta la vida de cada niña de una manera positive donde experimenta momentos de felicidad y orgullo por sí mismas es algo que recordarán toda su vida.

Many young people often pretend to be friends or even being to talk more frequently with girls just to receive an invitation to their party. Another very common phenomenon seen is when girls pretend to be fifteen because they want to know what it feels to be the center of attention of their environment and to receive more respect and a different treatment for being older.

It is clear that the ”Quince años” have had a great evolution during the last years but even so it will always be the experience that many girls sound and wish since childhood. These young women say that it is the perfect gift where their relatives and friends show all their love and affection, this event which impacts the life of each girl in a positive way where she experiences moments of happiness and pride for themselves is something that they will remember all of their life.

Eating Season Staying Fit During The Holidays

Summer is already gone. Now we enter a new season; I’m not referring to winter but to “the season of eating”. To the people that are fit all year round I wish you a happy eating season and to the ones who seem to gain weight during the holidays I can give some advice to stay fit.

During the holidays many encounter the problem of gaining weight. There is no need to worry, because gaining a bit of weight is not going to be the end of the world. During winter we wear several layers of clothes, so if you gain some weight it won’t be that obvious. Just when spring arrives you’ll be ready for a strict summer body diet. If what you want is to follow a strict diet the whole year in order to stay fit even during the holidays, there are some very easy and helpful tips to follow.

The first thing I would recommend is getting a partner and challenging each other to not give up the diet and workout plan. This is something simple 26

and it works great. It could be anyone, just pick someone you know that likes to be challenged.

At the beginning you both weigh each other.The challenge is to see who gains the least weight during the winter. By the end of the season, weigh each other again, and who ever gained the most has to dare the other to do something. As simple as it may sound it works great because it motivates you and you will be in a mental state of competing. Every time you’re about to grab a sweat you will remember the challenge and the prize.

In the begging, you might start strong but by the middle of the season many people start to give up. It´s normal to lose vision and focus of staying fit. A great way to remind yourself each day of your season goal is, to have the vision present and physically. What I mean by physically is to not only think about your goal but to see it W W W. every day. Something that may help with that is buying a really nice piece of clothing, it has to be your size or it could be smaller, it will represent want you want to look like during the holidays.

This piece of clothing has to be somewhat expensive and something you really want to wear.

Once you buy it you have to throw away the receipt and take the tags away, making sure there is no way you can exchange it for a bigger size later on. Then you must hang it in your room in someplace that you can see every time you wake up. Every two weeks you are going to try it on.

This is a really good way to stay motivated and to see if you have gained, maintained or lost weight.

The next thing I would recommend to win the challenge and fit in your new piece of clothing is to drink warm drinks and eat whole grains with filling fibers. This is truly magic to staying fit. The cold makes people burn more calories. That’s good right? Well it also makes them eat more to stay warm. By drinking warm drinks you are going to eliminate some food you would usually consume to stay warm. Say goodbye to that

chocolate bar and hello to a warm cup of coffee or tea. Drink your coffee without sugar or even better, drink green tea. Green tea keeps you warm and it makes you lose weight. The whole grains with filling fibers can be oatmeal or brown rice.

These types of food are calorie friendly and they will make you full for several hours. Eat smart and right!

Lastly, if you like it and are not afraid of the cold go for a run. Running in the cold burns a lot more calories than running in hot weather. Don’t go running with a jacket and snow boots. This will not be a good choice. Remember to stay light and cold.

That’s the key in burning more calories. If you’re afraid of getting sick don’t worry. As long as you wear a scarf, gloves, a hat, a hoodie, and some warm socks you’ll be fine. Enjoy your run and even bring a partner along.

Following some of this advice will help you stay fit for the holidays. Remember to have some treats from time to time but stay focus on your goals and do not forget that summer is waiting for you.

Mantenerse en forma durante las vacaciones

By: bernardo larrion El verano ya se fue. Ahora entramos en una nueva temporada; No me refiero al invierno sino a “la temporada de comer”. Para las personas que están en forma durante todo el año, les deseo una temporada de comidas felices y para aquellos que parecen aumentar de peso durante las vacaciones, les puedo dar algunos consejos para mantenerse en forma.

Durante las vacaciones, muchos enfrentan el problema de ganar peso.

No hay necesidad de preocuparse, porque ganar un poco de peso no será el fin del mundo. Durante el invierno, usamos varias capas de ropa, por lo que si gana un poco de peso no será tan obvio. Justo cuando llega la primavera estarás listo para 28

una estricta dieta corporal de verano. Si lo que desea es seguir una dieta estricta todo el año para mantenerse en forma, incluso durante las vacaciones, hay algunos consejos muy fáciles y útiles a seguir.

Lo primero que recomendaría es conseguir una pareja y desafiarse entre sí para no renunciar a la dieta y el plan de entrenamiento. Esto es algo simple y funciona genial. Podría ser cualquiera, solo elige a alguien que conozcas que le gustan los desafíos.

Reinstating multiculturalism

By: A.M.O Canada is renowned for its multiculturalism act. However, over the years it seems people have forgotten what it means to be multicultural. One of the definitions given is “The presence of, or support for the presence of, several distinct cultural or ethnic groups within a society”. Personally I believe it goes beyond that, it is the appreciation and acceptance of culture, ethics, religions and backgrounds, the encouragement of diversity, and the coexistence of humanity integrated by the support we have for one another, free from judgment and discrimination.

Many believe that multiculturalism has failed in Canada, I however disagree. Multiculturalism is the core of our society.

It is everywhere, in school, at work, in the mall and even th e supermarket.

All around us there are people of 30

different races and backgrounds.

Each and every individual has a story with one common aspect: they are Canadian in their own way.

When one reads of events that take place in other parts of the world, they are encountered with stories of sorrow, racism and an overall sense of an opposing force towards diversity.

I am not saying this happens everywhere, or that it doesn’t happen in Canada, what I am saying is that Canada has done an exceptional job of reinforcing and encouraging people from all over the world to coexist and create a safer and diverse environment that welcomes all humans to be part of our Canadian lifestyle. As all systems it is not perfect. However, if you look around you, you will see how far we have come as human beings regarding the maturation of our prejudice and

hatred. Looking back in history, multiculturalism was a laughable idea, however, it’s present today.

Every year countless numbers of people from all over the world immigrate to Canada. Regardless of where you come from you are allowed and encouraged to practice your beliefs. It´s not necessary to strip yourself of your identity and become solely “Canadian”; because to be Canadian means to be “global”, proudly uniting your country´s name with Canadian (ex. Por: A.M.O Canadá es famoso por su multiculturalismo. Sin embargo, a lo largo de los años parece que la gente ha olvidado lo que significa ser multicultural. Una de las definiciones dadas es “La presencia de, o el apoyo a la presencia de, varios grupos culturales o étnicos distintos dentro de una sociedad”. Personalmente, creo que va más allá de eso, es la apreciación y aceptación de la cultura, la ética, las religiones y las raíces, la fomentación de la diversidad y la coexistencia de la humanidad integrada por el apoyo mutuo, libre de prejuicios y discriminación.

Muchos creen que el multiculturalismo ha fallado en Canadá, pero estoy en desacuerdo. El multiculturalismo es el núcleo de nuestra sociedad. Está en todas partes, en la escuela, en el trabajo, en el centro comercial e incluso en el supermercado. A nuestro alrededor hay personas de diferentes razas y orígenes. Cada

individuo tiene una historia con un aspecto en común: son canadienses a su manera.

It is especially important for older adults however, because exercise and staying active can help to delay or prevent diseases and conditions that commonly affect older adults. For example, the benefits of exercise include lower rates of all-cause mortality, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer and breast cancer. In addition, exercise promotes higher level of cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness; healthier body mass and composition; and improved levels of cognitive function. In terms of overall fitness and mobility, regular exercise can help build your stamina, strength, flexibility and balance. In short, staying active will help you to continue doing the things you love with the people that matter most.

Volumize hair: If you have a can of beer lying around or can splurge a little on buying a can of beer go for it.

Open the can place it in a bowl and bath your hair in it or place the beer in a spray bottle and spray it into your hair till soaking wet. Leave in for 15 minutes , then wash out and shampoo and condition hair.

Cabello voluminoso: Si tiene una lata de cerveza por ahí o puede derrochar un poco en la compra de una lata de cerveza, adelante. In a bowl place half a papaya, deseeded and peeled, then smash it with a fork and add ½ a cup of plain yogurt mix and apply to your hair like a conditioner. Put on a shower cap or wrap a plastic bag over your head and leave in for 45 minutes then wash it out.

If you have a ripe banana lying around in your kitchen just smash it until it’s like a puree and mix two teaspoons of plain yogurt. Massage into your hair evenly, put on a hair cap and leave for 40-60 minutes. Then wash out with shampoo and conditioner.

Once cool, mix with about 2 cups of conditioner and two tablespoons of ground coffee and massage it into your hair and make sure it’s evenly distributed then place a cap over your hair and leave it for an hour and wash it out with shampoo and conditioner.

BY / POR: STANLEY WONG En esta edición, le daremos una mirada a una película mexicana del 2015 llamada Las elegidas. El drama fue dirigido por David Pablos, que se hizo conocido después de su primer largometraje, La vida después, lanzado en 2013. Las elegidas es su segundo largometraje y fue un éxito crítico, después de haber sido nominado y ganar varios premios Ariel, así como varias nominaciones en múltiples festivales internacionales de cine. Sin embargo, la película fue alabada por algo más que sus esfuerzos artísticos y de actuación.

Muchos también sintieron que la película hizo un buen trabajo mostrando la dura realidad de un problema social serio que a menudo se ve eclipsado y sigue siendo un problema constante.

La película se desarrolla en la ciudad fronteriza mexicana de Tijuana y se centra en dos personajes adolescentes, Ulysis (Oscar Torres) y Sofía (Nancy Talamantes). Mientras que la película comienza inocentemente, mostrando a los dos jóvenes personajes aparentemente enamorados, rápidamente toma un giro más oscuro, ya que se revela que Ulises está siendo utilizado por su familia para engañar a jóvenes hacia el negocio de la prostitución de su familia. Los sets también son muy simples y minimalistas, especialmente las escenas en el dormitorio.Toda la película tiene un aspecto muy descolorido y la mayoría de las escenas no tienen música de fondo, lo que se suma al tono deprimente de la película y al mismo tiempo acerca al público a la realidad de lo que se está representando en la pantalla. Todas estas decisiones se unen para crear una sensación de ordinariez muy aleccionadora en torno a una situación que la mayoría de los espectadores encontrarían incómoda.

Sentí que la película se alargó un poco a medida que se desarrolla la trama, sobre todo porque no es fácil de ver dado el tema difícil. La excelente actuación y la sensación realista creada por la cinematografía hacen que el sufrimiento que Sofía está soportando sea muy palpable y un poco difícil de soportar. Sin embargo, en última instancia, hace un buen trabajo al utilizar la película como medio para arrojar luz sobre un problema real que aún debe abordarse.

This edition, we are looking at a 2015 film from Mexico called Las elegidas (The Chosen Ones).

The drama was directed by David Pablos who became known after his first feature film, La vida después (The Life After) was released in 2013. Las elegidas is his second feature film and was a critical success, having been nominated and winning several Ariel Awards as well as several nominations at multiple international film festivals. The film however, was lauded for more than just its acting and artistic efforts. Many also felt that the film did a good job showing the harsh reality of a serious social problem that is often overshadowed and is still an ongoing problem.

The film is set in the Mexican border town of Tijuana and it is centered around two teenage characters, Ulysis (Oscars Torres) and Sofia (Nancy Talamantes). While the film starts innocently enough, showing the two young characters

seemingly in love, it quickly takes a darker turn as it is revealed that Ulises is being used by his family to trick young girls into his family’s prostitution business. It turns out however, that Ulises has fallen for Sofia for real and he tries to escape with her, but they are caught before they can make it to the border. Sofia is then forced into the prostitution ring while Ulises manages to strike a deal with his father. He will be allowed to get Sofia out of the brothel if he can find another girl to replace her. In the meantime however, Sofia continues to be exploited as she slips further and further each day.

The movie does a very good job of showing the real abject horror of the situation that these girls are in.

Most scenes are shot very simplistically with many static shots being used to focus attention on the people in the scenes. The sets are also very bare and minimalistic, especially the scenes in the bedroom. The

Las Elegidas entire movie has a very washed-out look to it and most scenes have no background music at all which adds to the depressing tone of the movie while also bringing the audience closer to the reality of what’s being represented on the screen.

These decisions all come together to create a very sobering feeling of ordinariness around a situation that most viewers would find uncomfortable.

I felt that the movie did drag on a little bit as the plot unfolds especially as it isn’t an easy watch given the hard subject matter. The excellent acting and the realistic feel created by the cinematography makes the suffering that Sofia is enduring very palpable and a little difficult to stomach. Ultimately however, it does a good job of using film as a medium to shine a light on a real problem that still needs to be addressed.

• 1 bag of Tostadas(from Mexican food isle) • Refried beans • 1/2 head iceberg lettuce • 2 medium tomatoes, chopped • Avocado slices • 8 ounces grated Monterrey Jack, Cheddar, or crumbled queso fresco and/or cotija cheese • 1 cup of Salsa or 1/2 cup sliced pickled jalapeños • A handful of chopped fresh cilantro • Optional: chicken pieces.

• 1 bolsa de tostadas (del pasillo de comida mexicana) •Frijoles refritos • 1/2 cabeza de lechuga iceberg, picada.

• 2 tomates medianos, cortados en cubitos.

• Rebanadas de Aguacate.

• 8 onzas ralladas de Monterrey Jack, Cheddar, o queso fresco desmenuzado y / o queso cotija • 1 taza de salsa o 1/2 taza de jalapeños en escabeche en rodajas • Un puñado de cilantro fresco picado • Opcional: Pollo deshebrado.

2. Bring out the tostada shells in batches 3.To prepare one’s tostada, spread a large spoonful of mashed beans over a tostada shell.

4. Sprinkle on cheese and other toppings (sliced lettuce, avocados, salsa, etc.) Don’t load the tostada too much or you’ll find it difficult to eat.
