After a very busy summer filled with production and critical thinking workshops we are delighted to present our 11th edition, which analyzes the different socio-economic factors that shape Latin America. In this edition we seek to present a side of our historical and contemporary politics. As new and exciting changes approach, we must continue to educate ourselves to ensure that we have the tools to meet the challenges that will come with them.

Avenida aims to be an example of the importance that of Latin American youth being active members of change in our community, therefore we make a cordial invitation to join our social communications team. Contact us; we always look forward to expanding our familia.

Después de un verano muy ocupado, lleno de talleres de producción y pensamiento crítico estamos encantados de presentar nuestra 11ª edición, la cual analiza los diferentes factores socioeconómicos que dan forma a América Latina. En esta edición buscamos presentar un lado de nuestra política histórica y contemporánea. A medida que se aproximan nuevos y emocionantes cambios, debemos continuar educándonos para garantizar que poseemos las herramientas para afrontar los desafíos que vendrán con ellos.

Avenida busca ser un ejemplo de la importancia de que las/los jóvenes latino americanos sean miembros activos y gestores de cambio en nuestra comunidad por lo tanto hacemos una cordial invitación para sumarse a nuestro equipo de comunicación y gestión social. Caso Chevron: La Lucha de 30.000 Indegenas Contra una de las Petroleras mas Grandes del Mundo El medio ambiente es siempre un tema sobre la mesa pues todos sabemos que se ve afectado cada día alrededor del mundo. Sin embargo, aunque este hecho esté presente en la vida cotidiana, no siempre se siente como algo cercano para nosotros. Por este motivo es importante informarse sobre lo que ocurre y los medios posibles para contribuir a las causas ambientales.

El Amazonas -situada entre Brasil, Bolivia, Perú, Ecuador, Colombia y Venezuela- es uno de los lugares más ricos del mundo, su extensa biodiversidad lo convierte en un paraíso natural del que muchas generaciones han disfrutado y cuidado.

Sin embargo, en los últimos años ha sufrido mucha contaminación y daño debido a numerosas causas en los diferentes países que abarca, la mayoría de ellas provenientes de la mano del hombre.

Un ejemplo de esto tiene lugar en el Ecuador, donde a mediados 4

de los años sesenta una compañía llamada Texaco comenzó a explotar los yacimientos petrolíferos del país. Durante alrededor de 3 décadas los desechos producidos por este proceso fueron vertidos en las aguas y las tierras, hábitat no solo de una inmensa diversidad de flora y fauna, sino también de numerosas comunidades que se vieron afectadas gravemente. En 1993, la UDAPT (Unión De Afectados Por Texaco) inició una demanda contra Texaco en el tribunal de Nueva York, Estados Unidos. En el transcurso de este proceso la compañía decidió fusionarse con Chevron, una multinacional estadounidense, en el 2001. Años después, el juicio donde Texaco -ahora llamada Chevron- sería inculpado y condenado a abonar una compensación monetaria de 9,5 billones de dólares para la Amazonia, tuvo lugar en Ecuador a petición de la misma. Desafortunadamente, la deuda no pudo ser

recaudada ya que para el momento en que Chevron fue encontrado culpable ya había sacado todos sus activos del país, es decir todos sus fondos fueron transferidos impidiendo de esta manera cumplir con su condena.

Sin embargo, los demandantes no se dieron por vencidos ahí, pues ellos saben que esta multinacional tiene activos alrededor de todo el mundo y que el dinero que les pertenece solo fue transferido de una cuenta a otra. Por este motivo ellos decidieron tomar iniciativas hasta llegar a Canadá, donde Chevron también opera. Hoy por hoy, el caso se está llevando a cabo en Toronto donde el presidente de la UDAPT, Humberto Piaguaje , y su abogado , Pablo Fajardo, son testigos de cómo el juicio depende de una pequeña tecnicidad que demuestre que Chevron Ecuador y Chevron Canadá tienen una asociación legal y por tanto debe asumir con la deuda

que permitirá reparar y restaurar la amazonia ecuatoriana.

En los últimos días, Avenida Latina tuvo la oportunidad de asistir a una de las reuniones donde Humberto y su abogado Pablo, junto a otras organizaciones discutirían algunos aspectos del caso. Humberto pertenece a la comunidad Secoya, como presidente de la UDAPT representa más de 30.000 afectados de diferentes comunidades y Pablo está al frente del ámbito legal de este caso.

Humberto declaró que la razón principal que les motiva a seguir este caso , durante ya casi veintitrés años , es el hecho de haber sido testigo desde su infancia del cambio que sufrió la Amazonia, un paraíso natural sin ninguna contaminación donde poco a poco los ríos pasaron de ser agua cristalina a agua de crudo, petróleo. Este entorno, donde comunidades habitan y se benefician en una infinidad de maneras, no es solo una selva para ellos, es su farmacia, su hospital, su universidad donde ellos crecen y se desarrollan. Todo esto fue destruido pues el daño causado no fue solo territorial, también fue cultural pues desapareció el respeto a la naturaleza. Así nos comparte Humberto , que para ellos la conexión del hombre con la naturaleza es una fuerza espiritual, un intercambio de energías.

Por este motivo la destrucción de los recursos naturales es un atentado a la vida.

La salud de todas estas comunidades también fue un gran factor para seguir la persecución de Chevron, pues uno de los principales efectos de la con-

taminación fue la aparición de diferentes enfermedades como, leucemia en los niños, enfermedades en la piel y diferentes cánceres. Humberto nos comenta con tristeza que durante este tiempo él ha perdido seis miembros de su familia debido al cáncer y actualmente otro miembro, padece leucemia.

Sin dudas ha sido un proceso de muchos años donde perder la esperanza de ganar este caso es sencillo. Sin embargo, Pablo nos ratifica que está seguro de sus acciones y que confía plenamente en que la justicia les entregará la victoria. El compromiso y convicción son las bases que permiten sacrificar los intereses personales por un bien mayor, en este caso, no permitir que este crimen cometido por Chevron quede en impunidad, y más allá de eso conquistar no solo la victoria del caso si no utilizar todos los beneficios para sanar el daño causado en la Amazonia. Así pues, su siguiente reto ya está sobre la mesa, preparar las tierras para que las siguientes generaciones puedan disfrutar de ellas de la misma manera que un día ellos lo hicieron.

Como se mencionó anteriormente, el caso se encuentra en un punto crítico donde la decisión que afectará el futuro de la Amazonia depende de una tecnicidad legal entre empresas.

Tanto Humberto como Pablo, miembros y representantes de la comunidad, se encuentran en una posición que les permite observar de cerca el avance de la situación. Por este motivo ellos expresan lo desgarrador

que es saber que todo el deterioro sufrido en la Amazonia se ha convertido en una discusión legal, algo que desde sus inicios no tiene nada de técnico, solo hechos y verdades que se pueden palpar.

Para concluir, nuestros compañeros hacen un llamado a la comunidad de jóvenes y nos invitan a ser parte de esta lucha, nuestra lucha, la cual nos pertenece a todos y sobretodo a la juventud que somos los que en un futuro cercano se beneficiar de todo lo que nuestro planeta nos ofrece. El oxígeno que respiramos es uno y no tiene límite, en Ecuador, en Canadá, en el resto de países del mundo es el mismo, todos estamos conectados.

Es por esto que debemos luchar para proteger nuestra vida y la de las futuras generaciones. Tomemos esta oportunidad para reflexionar sobre todo aquello que hoy parece abundante pero que mañana puede acabar y pensemos como podemos protegerlo.

David VS Goliath The environment has always been an issue left on the table because we all know that it is something being affected everyday around the world. However, although this fact is present in our daily lives, it doesn’t always feel like something close to us. For this reason, it is important to be informed about what is happening and the ways we can contribute to environmental causes. The Amazon, located between Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela, is one of the ecologically richest places in the world. Its extensive biodiversity makes it a natural paradise that many generations have enjoyed and cared for. However, in recent years, it has suffered much pollution and damage due to numerous causes in the different countries it spans through, mostly a result of human impact.

One example of this is in Ecuador, where in the mid-1960s, a company called Texaco began to exploit the country’s oil fields. For about 3 decades, the waste produced by this process was dumped into the land and water that was not only the habitat of an immense diversity of flora and fauna, but also the home to numerous communities that 6

In 1993, the Union of People Affected by Texaco (UDAPT by its abbreviation in Spanish) filed a lawsuit against Texaco in the New York court system. In the course of this process, the company decided to merge with Chevron, a US multinational in 2001.Years later, the trial where Texaco, now called Chevron, would be charged and ordered to pay a monetary compensation of 905 billion dollars for the Amazon, took place in Ecuador. Unfortunately, the amount could not be collected as by the time Chevron was found guilty, all their assets had ben taken out of the country, meaning all funds were transferred, thus preventing the sentence from being carried out.

Despite this, the plaintiffs did not give up there as they know that the multinational had assets all around the world and the money that was owed was sonly transferred from one account to another. For this reason, they decided to take the initiative to Canada where Chevron also operates. Today, the case is be-

ing held in Toronto where UDAPT President Humberto Piaguaje and his lawyer Pablo Fajardo are witness to a case depending on a small technicality proving that Chevron Ecuador and Chevron Canada have a legal association and therefore must assume the debt that will repair and restore the Ecuadorian Amazon.

In recent days, Avenida Latina had the opportunity to attend one of the meetings where Humberto and his lawyer Pablo along with other organizations discussed some aspects of the case. Humberto belongs to the Secoya people and as president of UDAPT, he represents more than 30,000 people affected from different communities. Pablo on the other hand represents the legal forefront of the case.

Humberto stated that the main reason that motivated them to follow this case through was the change he witnessed the Amazon suffer. For almost twenty-three years since his childhood, he witnessed how the Amazon went gradually from being a natural paradise, free of pollution

to a place where its rivers changed from crystal-clear waters into crude oil. For the communities that inhabit this environment and live off of it, the Amazon isn’t just a jungle to them, it is their pharmacy, their hospital, their university where they grow and develop. All of this was destroyed because the damage caused was not only to the land, but also cultural as the respect for nature disappeared. Humberto shared with us that for them, the connection of man with nature is a spiritual force, an exchange of energies. For this reason, the destruction of natural resources is an attack on life.

The health of these communities was also an important factor in pursuing Chevron, as one of the main effects of the pollution was the emergence of different diseases like leukemia in children, skin diseases and different cancers. Humberto sadly told us that during this time, he lost six family members to cancer and one more is currently suffering from leukemia.

The process has taken many years and there is undoubtedly, no hope of winning this case simply. However, Pablo asserted to us that he is sure of his actions and he is fully confident that justice will be delivered. Commitment and conviction are the basis of sacrificing personal interest for the greater good, in this case, it’s not enough that Chevron’s

crimes are not met with impunity, but the funds won from the case are to be used to heal the damage caused to the Amazon. So, the next challenge is already laid out for us, to prepare the lands so that the coming generations can enjoy them the same way that we once did.

As mentioned earlier, the case is at a critical point where the decision that will affect the future of the Amazon depends on a legal technicality between companies. Both Humberto and Pablo, members and representatives of their community, find themselves in a position where they can closely observe the situation’s progress. For this reason, they express how heartbreaking it is to know that the deterioration of the Amazon has become a legal discussion, something that has nothing to

do with technicalities, but rather hard facts and truths that could be felt.

In conclusion, our colleagues call on the community of young people and invite us to be part of this struggle, our struggle, which belongs to us all and above all, to the youth who stand to benefit in the near feature form all the planet offers us.The oxygen we breathe is one, and has no limits in Ecuador, in Canada or any of the world’s countries. It is one and the same and we are all connected. That is why we must fight to protect our lives and the lives of future generations. Let us take this opportunity to reflect on everything that today seems plentiful, but that tomorrow may run out and think about how we can protect it.

One question that someone growing up in Canada will hear a lot is “where are you from?”

To some, this may seem like a straightforward question, but for many, especially kids growing up here with an immigrant background, it isn’t as easy a question to answer. This kind of questioning is important though because it prompts a self-reflection on one’s character, which is important for kids growing up in such a diverse place, especially in Toronto where we have such a rich mixture of heritages. It is a good chance for kids to learn about not just themselves, but also about the different cultures around them. By being curious about ourselves and the shared and differing realities of those around us, we become better people as we learn to consider the value in our differences. This is why I was happy to see the that the summer camp provided kids with the opportunities to explore their cultural heritage and share who they are with each other.

When the Teacher Becomes the Student

What I Learned from the Kids

T

his summer I spent six-weeks working at the Centre for Spanish Speaking Peoples’ summer camp for kids and youth and it was a tremendously rewarding experience working with such bright, creative and funny children. As a translation student, it was an awesome experience for me to develop my Spanish skills, but more importantly, it was also a chance to build a connection with the Spanish-speaking community here in Toronto. My experience working with these kids taught me a lot about the tremendous cultural diversity in their community, but it also helped me to understand my own experience growing up as a Chinese-Canadian in an immigrant family here in Canada. Though there are definitely many differences between the two communities, I also saw many parallels in the experience of growing up in Canada as a minority trying to resolve my own sense of identity among Canada’s rich cultural mosaic.

One thing I found very similar was how we balance speaking another language with English.

Though the languages are different, what I found common in both communities is that while not everyone may have the same level of bilingualism, we adapt to make things work. Some kids

may be stronger in one language and weaker in another, but as a group, kids will often still find a way to play through the language barrier either by translating for each other or by mixing their two languages (i.e. Spanglish). This is in fact a very Canadian experience as it’s a reality we share with the 20% of Canadians who speak a non-official language at home. It is an important aspect of the Canadian experience to be aware of because the languages we speak are a big part of our culture, identity and both the way we view the world and ourselves and express these views to each other. It’s an especially important topic for children to think about as it fosters the development of their sense of identity and belonging in Canada.

This is in fact a very Canadian experience as it’s a reality we share with the 20% of Canadians who speak a non-official language at home.

Something unique I noticed about the Spanish – speaking community though was just how much diversity there was within the community. As I watched how the kids talked to each other, I noticed how the kids would become curious about their different dialects of Spanish which usually led them to try to learn more about their different cultural backgrounds. What impressed me the most is how that diversity isn’t just accepted, but how much it’s cherished and embraced. One reason I think the diversity within the community is so cherished is that the shared language binds people coming here from all over Latin America together with a sense of belonging that creates a very strong community made richer with the diversity within.This alone speaks a lot about Canada as an open place for the mixing of different cultures and values and it plays a large role in the shaping of self-identity in young Canadians like ourselves.

Being able to work with such funny, creative and smart children was a very unique opportunity for me and I am thankful to the community for giving me this chance and making me feel so welcome among them. I only hope that the children were able to learn as much as I learned from them and I hope that they continue to explore their language, identity and culture as they find their own understanding of their place in Canada’s mosaic. Ultimately, this experience helped me to understand my own childhood growing up as a minority in Canada better as many of us here face the same struggles dealing with language, culture and identity, but with the help of a supportive community, these issues can be turned into powerful learning opportunities which will shape the minds of the next generation.

Lo que aprendí de los niños

Este verano, pasé seis semanas trabajando con los niños y jóvenes del campamento de verano del Centro Para Gente de Habla Hispana y fue una experiencia tremendamente gratificante, trabajando con niños tan listos, creativas y graciosos. Como estudiante de traducción, fue una experiencia increíble para mejorar mi español, pero más importante fue una oportunidad para crear una conexión con la comunidad hispanohablante aquí en Toronto. Mi experiencia trabajando con estos niños me ayudó a entender mi propia experiencia de crecer como un chino canadiense en una familia inmigrante aquí en Canadá.

Aunque hay muchas diferencias entre las dos comunidades, también vi muchos paralelismos en la experiencia de crecer en Canadá como una minoría tratando con mi propio sentido de identidad entre la riqueza del mosaico cultural de Canadá.

Algo que me parece muy similar fue cómo podemos con hablar una lengua otra con inglés. Aunque las lenguas son diferentes, lo que encontré similar entre las dos comunidades es, aunque podría ser que todos no tenemos el mismo nivel de bilingüismo, adaptamos para que todo funcione.

Algunos niños sean más fuertes en una lengua y más débil en la otra, pero como un grupo, los niños de menudo buscarán una manera de jugar a pesar de la barrera del idioma o por la traducción o por la mezcla de las dos lenguas (i.e. Spanglish). nuestra cultura, identidad y ambos nuestra manera de ver el mundo y nuestra manera de expresar esas perspectivas entre nosotros. Eso es un tema especialmente importante para que los niños tengan en miente porque promueve el desarrollo de su sentido de identidad y pertenencia en Canadá.

Una pregunta que alguien creciendo en Canadá escuchará mucho es << ¿de dónde eres? >> Para algunos, esto podría parecer como una pregunta sencilla, pero para muchos, especialmente los chicos creciendo aquí de un origen inmigratorio, no es nada fácil responder a esta pregunta. Este tipo de preguntas es importante porque causa una auto-reflexión que es importante para niños creciendo en un lugar con tanta diversidad como Toronto donde hay una rica mezcla de herencias culturales. Para los niños, es una buena oportunidad para aprender, no sólo sobre sí mismos, pero también acerca de las culturas diferentes que les rodean. Siendo curiosos con nosotros mismos y las diferentes realidades compartidos de los que nos rodean, llegamos a ser mejores personas cuando aprendemos a considerar el valor en nuestras diferencias. Es por eso que me ha complacido ver cómo el campamento de verano brindó la oportunidad a los niños de explorar su herencia cultural y para compartir quienes son uno con el otro.

Al ver la manera en que los niños hablaron entre ellos, me nota cómo las diferencias entre sus dialectos de español fomentaron la curiosidad de los niños sobre sus antecedentes culturales. Al observar cómo los niños hablaron entre sí, me di cuenta cómo los niños se volvieron curiosas acerca sus diferentes dialectos de español que por lo general les llevaron a tratar de aprender más acerca de sus acervos culturales.

Lo que más me impresioné fue cómo esa diversidad no fue solamente aceptada sino preciada y abrazada. Una razón que creo la diversidad de la comunidad es tan preciada es que la lengua compartida se une las personas que vienen aquí de todas partes de Latinoamérica con un sentido de pertenencia que crea una comunidad muy fuerte, fortalecido por la diversidad dentro. Esto por sí solo dice mucho sobre el papel de Canadá como un lugar abierto para la mezcla de culturas y valores diferentes y se juega un gran papel en el formar de la auto-identidad de joven canadienses como nosotros.

La oportunidad de trabajar con chicos tan graciosos, creativas y listos fue algo que muy única para mí y agradezco mucho a la comunidad por la bienvenida que he recibido con la oportunidad que me había dado. Sólo espero que los chicos pudieran aprender tanto como aprendí yo de ellos y espero que sigan explorar su lenguaje, identidad y cultura en su entendimiento de su lugar en el mosaico canadiense.

En última instancia, esa experiencia me ayudó a mejor entender mi propia infancia creciendo como una minoría en Canadá por muchos de nosotros aquí confrontamos las mismas luchas con lengua, cultura e identidad, pero con la ayuda de una comunidad solidaría, esos temas pueden ser convertidos en oportunidades para aprender y crecer que ayudarán a dar forma a las mentes de las generaciones futuras.

MEXICO’S EDUCATION REFORM What Went Wrong?

P

arents, students and teachers should only be concerned with one thing when talking about education. That concern should be grades. Not government education reforms, protests and violence. This is what is happening in Mexico. Violence and education have nothing in common. They should be separated and not combined. In Mexico grades are not important anymore. Today in Mexico parents are worried for their child’s education, students are worried about their lives and teacher are worried about keeping their jobs.

In Mexico about 94% of the students attend public schools. This means that the recent education reforms cannot be taken as something of no importance. These education reforms seem to benefit more the government than its students and teachers. The reforms haven’t made education better or the infrastructures better. Now Mexico’s future is on the hands of the students attending school. If education is bad, the country cannot grow and prosper. It will only fall and there will be more violence in the streets. The education of Mexico is something to be worried about.

When compared to other countries the OECD, performance indicators showed Mexico was behind in their education.

OECD is The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. In the OECD states that Mexico’s education in schools is one of the worst in the world.

The performance of the students in school is dropping. The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) showed that Mexican students lacked reading, math and science skill. 41% of students didn’t reach the basic reading level. 55% did not reach the basic math level. These numbers are worse when compared to other OECD countries.

“That means that he is a 9th grader but has the skills of someone in 7th grade” The math scores in Mexico fall 81 points the OECD average. To get an idea of how bad it is to be this far behind the average, its like if a 9th grade student is two years behind in his education.That means that he is a 9th grader but has the skills of someone in 7th grade. Not only this but students don’t even finish school. Many drop out and start working because they see no benefit in their education. Also these numbers are due to the lack in school supplies and infrastructure such as sewers and roads in the states south of Mexico. They are poor and many are more worried about food than education. This is why teachers are in need of change for the better of the country.

They are willing to risk their lives in order to have a change that will make schools better, students more educated and a secured

payed job without the risk of being fired or killed. Now, teacher unions, government being violent and protests are denying any hopes of making education better.

The Mexican government hasn’t done anything to benefit the teachers or students.

More than 3000 teachers have been fired and the government has killed students and teachers. Teachers are frustrated and have anger towards the government because they have not put the attention and time needed towards education. The teachers in school are being fired and killed for no purpose. There still isn’t any change happening in the reforms. Very little change appears to happen in government. Having a reform takes time and money. While the reforms are being made all that’s happening in the mean time are clashes between police and members of the teacher union and other protesters, which include students. These clashes result in many dead and many injured. Also protestors in the southern part of Mexico have been blocking roads. This causes chaos and conflict.

The police cleared the roads by using violent force. This is a terrible way of dealing with protestors.

The arguments of the education reforms have been happening for some time now.

Many arguments have occurred in violent and non-violent forms. The education system is one of the worst and the future of many people is depending on better reforms and change.

os padres, estudiantes y maestros solo deberían preocuparse de una cosa cuando se habla de educación. Esa preocupación deberían ser las calificaciones. No sobre reformas educativas del gobierno, ni sobre protestas, ni sobre violencia.

Esto es lo que sucede en México. La violencia y la educación no tienen nada en común. Deberían estar separadas y no combinadas. En México, las calificaciones ya no son importantes. Hoy en día, en México, los padres están preocupados por la educación de sus hijos, los estudiantes están preocupados por sus vidas y los maestros están preocupados por mantener sus empleos.

En México, cerca del 94 % de los estudiantes asisten a escuelas públicas. Esto significa que las recientes reformas educativas no se pueden tomar como algo sin importancia. Estas reformas educativas parecen beneficiar más al gobierno que a los estudiantes y maestros.

Las reformas no han hecho que la educación mejore o que la infraestructura mejore. Ahora, el futuro de México está en las manos de los estudiantes que asisten a la escuela. Si la educación es mala, el país no puede crecer y prosperar. Sólo caerá y habrá más violencia en las calles. La educación en México es algo de que preocuparse. Cuando se compara con otros países de la OCDE, los estándares de desempeño muestran que México está detrás en educación.

El programa para la evaluación internacional de los alumnos (PISA, por sus siglas en inglés) muestra que a los estudiantes mexicanos les faltaban habilidades en lectura, matemáticas y ciencias.

tos números son peores cuando se comparan con otros países de la OCDE. Los resultados de matemáticas en México caen 81 puntos en el promedio de la OCDE. Para tener una idea de que tan mal está estar así de lejos del promedio; es como si un alumno de 3ro de secundaria estuviera dos años atrasado en su educación.

Eso significa que es un alumno de 3ro pero tiene las habilidades de un alumno de 1ro.

No solo esto, los alumnos ni siquiera terminan la escuela. Muchos abandonan la escuela y comienzan a trabajar porque no ven ningún beneficio en su educación. Estos números se deben a la falta de suministros e infraestructura en las escuelas, como alcantarillas y carreteras en los estados al sur de México. Muchos son pobres y están más preocupados por la comida que por la educación. Es por esta razón que los maestros necesitan un cambio para el bien del país. Están dispuestos a arriesgar sus vidas Para tener un cambio que hará las escuelas mejores, estudiantes mejor educados y un trabajo pagado seguro, sin el riesgo de ser despedidos o que los maten. Ahora, los sindicatos de maestros, el gobierno violento y las protestas están negando cualquier esperanza de una mejor educación.

El gobierno mexicano no ha hecho nada para beneficiar a los maestros o a los alumnos. Más de 3000 maestros han sido despedidos y el gobierno ha matado a maestros y alumnos.

Los maestros están frustrados y enojados con el gobierno. Los maestros están siendo despedidos y asesinados sin razón. Aún no hay ningún cambio en las reformas. Parece haber muy poco cambio en el gobierno. Tener una reforma lleva tiempo y dinero. Mientras se hacen las reformas se suscitan enfrentamientos entre policías, el sindicato de maestros y otros protestantes, entre ellos, estudiantes. Los resultados de estos enfrentamientos son muchos muertos y lastimados. También, protestantes en el sur de México han bloqueado las carreteras, esto causa caos y conflicto. La policía despeja las carreteras usando la fuerza. Esta es una terrible manera de tratar con los protestantes.

Las discusiones sobre la reforma educativa han estado sucediendo desde hace ya un tiempo. Muchas discusiones han sido violentas y no violentas. El Sistema educativo es uno de los peores y el futuro de muchas personas depende de mejores reformas y un cambio.

Filosofo revolucionario ecuatoriano, Bolívar Echeverría participo en el movimiento estudiantil alemán de los años 60. En la década de los setentas Echeverría estudio economía en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, posteriormente trabajo como traductor y profesor universitario en El Capital.

Echeverría es reconocido por su trabajo en revistas culturales y políticas como Cuadernos Políticos (1974-1989); Palos de la Crítica (1980-1981) y Economía Política (México 1976-1985). Su trabajo investigativo al igual que sus críticas a modelos económicos lo llevaron a desarrollar su teoría del “Ethos Barroco”, un modelo de resistencia cultural hacia una modernidad no-capitalista. Echeverría falleció en la Ciudad de México el 5 de junio del 2010 por un infarto cardiaco.

Flora Tristan fue una revolucionaria peruano-francesa quien nació el 07 de Abril de 1803. Una de las primeras feministas socialistas, Tristan se anticipo a las ideas revolucionarias de Marx y Engels al analizar la sociedad en un concepto de oprimidos contra opresores. En sus diversos trabajos, como su libro “Paseos en Londres”, Tristan hablo de la diferencia abismal entre el placentero estilo de vida que tenían los burgueses británicos, y las ardas condiciones en las que sobresalieron los pobres de Inglaterra. Flora propuso la unión de los trabajadores para luchar por más justas y mejores condiciones de trabajo y por la seguridad social.

En su búsqueda por transformar la sociedad y crear un mundo mejor su cuerpo se debilito debido al extenso esfuerzo que requería para una persona frágil físicamente como era ella recurrir a las ciudades donde los obreros eran cruelmente explotados en las fábricas y falleció a una joven edad en 1844.

Flora Tristan was a French- Peruvian revolutionary who was born on April 7th, 1803. One of the first socialist feminists, Tristan anticipated the revolutionary ideas of Marx and Engels when analyzing society in a concept of oppressed against oppressors. In her various works, such as her book “Walks in London,” Tristan spoke of the abysmal difference between the pleasant lifestyle of the British bourgeoisie and the arduous conditions in which the poor of England excelled. Flora proposed the union of the workers to fight for more just and better working conditions and for the improvement of their social security. In her quest to transform society and create a better world her body was weakened because of the extensive effort it required for a physically fragile person as she was to resort to cities where workers were cruelly exploited in factories, and she died at a young age in 1844.

Bartolina Sisa, Nació en La Paz el 25 de agosto de 1750, hija de José sisa y Josefa Vargas ambos dedicados a la compra y venta de coca.

Bartolina heredo el negocio y prosiguió el comercio llegando a poblaciones del Perú, Cochabamba y Potosí. Contrajo matrimonio con Tupac Katari (Julián Apaza) en 1770. Cansados de ver tanta injusticia y convencidos que el único camino para terminar el sistema de dominación y explotación de la corona española, se suman a la lucha por la emancipación y se produce el alzamiento en Ayoayo, en 1781, bajo la dirección de de Tupac Katari y de Bartolina Sisa. Bartolina tuvo a su cargo la organización de los campamentos militares de la insurgencia aymara en el alto de La Paz, en el valle de Potopoto y en las alturas de Pampahasi. el 2 de julio de 1781 fue capturada junto a sus compañeros, Estuvo encarcelada varios meses hasta que en septiembre de 1782 fue condenada a la horca.

José Eloy Alfaro Delgado nació en Montecristi, provincia de Manabí, Ecuador el 25 de junio de 1842, fue presidente en dos periodos: de 1895 a 1901 y de 1906 a 1911. Durante sus primero anos el futuro líder creció en medio de la vida rural, en contacto diario con los campesinos, con sus costumbres, sus fiestas, y su cosmovisión. Alfaro se identificó con el liberalismo anticlerical, doctrina que se conoció posteriormente como el liberalismo radical ecuatoriano. Durante su presidencia Eloy Alfaro introdujo diversas leyes para dar seguridad jurídica a los ciudadanos; estableció́ un Estado laico separando el poder político de la influencia eclesiástica; procuró por todos los medios la unidad nacional; dando principal atención a la educación creando Normales (Colegio para formar profesores) para formar nuevos profesores con nueva mentalidad y actitudes, hizo una verdadera revolución educativa, creó nuevos Colegios de enorme prestigio y de igual manera apoyó la equidad de género y por primera vez nombró a una mujer para un cargo público. Además creó una red de ferrocarriles para unir todo el país. Eloy Alfaro fue asesinado el 28 de enero de 1912.

A Curse Is Gone After 108 Years The Cubs Taste Victory One of the biggest curses in sports history has finally left a desperate baseball team. On November 3, 2016 the Chicago cubs won the 2016 Major League Baseball World Series. The Chicago cubs had not seen victory in 108 years.

This has been the longest drought in baseball history. Curse or not, it makes for one fun and interesting myth.

The Chicago cubs had some good history before the “curse”. Back in 1870, the team was known as the Chicago White Stockings.They played their first game against the St. Louis Unions in 1870 defeating them 47-1; showing the potential the team had. Then, in 1876, they joined the National League and in no time they established themselves as one of the best teams in the United States. The team also had some of the best players in the league, such as Adrian Anson, who was the first player in history to have had 3000 career hits.

Later, when the American Baseball League was created, the team´s name changed to what is known today as the Chicago Cubs. They made many team records such as winning 116-36 in 1906 , making it an unbreakable record.

The following two years they won the World Series twice making them the first team to play in three consecutive

Then, they won pennants in 1910, 1918, 1929, 1932, 1935 and 1938. Their final pennant came in 1945 due to what people believed to be a “curse”.

El equipo también tuvo algunos de los mejores jugadores de la liga, como Adrian Anson, que fue el primer jugador en la historia en obtener 3000 batasos en su carrera.

Más tarde, cuando se creó la Liga Americana de Béisbol, el nombre del equipo cambió a lo que hoy se conoce como los Cachorros de Chicago (Chicago Cubs).

Hicieron muchos récords como equipo, como ganar 116-36 en 1906, convirtiéndolo en un récord inquebrantable. Los siguientes dos años ganaron la Serie Mundial dos veces haciéndolos el primer equipo que jugará en tres Series Mundiales consecutivas y ganará dos de ellas. Luego, ganaron banderines en 1910, 1918, 1929, 1932, 1935 y 1938. Su banderín final vino en 1945 debido a lo que la gente creía que era una “maldición”.

Cuenta la leyenda que en el juego cuatro, William Sianis, apodado Billy, dueño de una cabra y de la taberna Billy Goat compró dos boletos para ir a ver a su equipo favorito, Los Cachorros de Chicago. trar porque la cabra traería buena suerte al equipo, sin embargo le dijeron que no se permitia la entrada a animales y por lo tanto sólo él podría entrar.William se puso muy enojado, levantó la mano y dijo que los Cachorros nunca volverían a ganar hasta que la cabra fuera permitida entrada al estadio. Ese día, William y la cabra marcaron la maldición y abandonaron el estadio.

Los Cachorros de Chicago perdieron el juego ese día y los tres partidos restantes.

William más tarde envió un telegrama al estadio diciendo: “¿Quién apesta ahora?”

Después de 1945, los Cachorros de Chicago no ganaron ningún banderín o Serie Mundial. Eran terribles en los juegos y con trabajo avanzaban el la liga. Más tarde, en 1973, el sobrino de William –Sam- el nuevo dueño de la taberna, dijo que levantaría la maldición si Sócrates su cabra era permitida la entrada al estadio. A los dos se les negó la entrada y el equipo perdió de nuevo. Luego, en 1884, el nuevo propietario de los Cachorros de Chicago finalmente permitió a Sam y Sócrates la entrada al campo. Caminaron alrededor y Sam dijo que la maldición habia sido removida. Los cachorros ganaron su primer juego de postemporada y el título de division, que no había

sido ganado en 40 años. Los cachorros llegaron al Campeonato Nacional de la serie.

Todo parecía prometedor y se sentía como si hubiera funcionado. La maldición finalmente había desaparecido. Se enfrentaron a los Padres de San Diego y ganaron los dos primeros partidos. Tenían tres a la izquierda y sólo necesitaban ganar uno para llegar a la Serie Mundial. El equipo se sintió confiado y no llamó a Sam y Sócrates para venir a los juegos. Terminaron perdiendo los siguientes tres juegos. Después de años finalmente ganaron la serie en 2016 contra los Indios de Cleveland en 10 entradas, 8-7 en el Juego 7 en el Campo “Progressive” en Cleveland. Fue una gran victoria y nunca será olvidada.

Esta maldición puede haber sido una coincidencia, pero el rumor es demasiado bueno para ser ignorado. Hay muchas facetas de la historia y muchas opiniones sobre ella. Hay gente que dice que la cabra de Billy fue usada como publicidad y otras que realmente creen que hay una maldición.

De cualquier manera, los Chicago Cubs no habían ganado en más de 100 años.

Finalmente han ganado la serie en 2016 terminando la maldición de 71 años y los 108 años de no ganar una serie. Este es un acontecimiento histórico que nunca será olvidado. Los aficionados y los no-fans están todos sorprendidos y parece que todo el mundo está celebrando. Todo lo que queda es esperar que su próxima victoria en la serie no sea en 2124.

A chronological story of more than 50 years of war The first episodes of the 50 years’ war in Colombia dates back to 1948, when the Liberal presidential candidate Jorge Eliecer Gaitan was assassinated in Bogota. His death caused a revolt in the capital and the rest of the country by his followers. This revolt was known as the “Bogotazo”. This revolutionary attack was mainly held against the Conservative government, who was in power at the time.

After the “Bogotazo” a new violent era started for the country known as “La Violencia”, the violence.

During the period of “La Violecia” from 1948 to 1958, the country suffered from a war between both political parties; The Liberals and Conservatives. This 10-year period was not considered a civil war, however, it was a very violent one which included assassinations, persecutions, destruction of the private property and terrorism by political alignment.

On June 13, 1953, the Army General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla mounted a successful and peaceful coup d’état against the president in power at the time, Laureano Gomez Castro, conceived by Liberal and Conservative parties to reestablish peace and political order in the nation. His governmental style was of military dictatorship. He became the president of Colombia from 1953 to 1957 without a popular election. In 1957 the people of Colombia organized a massive protest around the nation demanding his resignation. Rojas was ousted and this day was recognized as a “coup d’etat of public opinion”

In 1958, the two main political parties of Colombia; Liberals and Conservatives, agreed to rotate political power with a period of four presidential terms each, a total of 16 years, in which each party would have two presidential terms. This pact was called “Frente Nacional” (National Front). In 1968, both parties agreed to dissolve the system gradually. Free elections were reestablished in 1974 and continued to share bureaucracy until 1978.

The M-19, appeared in scene after 3 years of the elections on January 16, 1973. They called an urban guerrilla after launching a campaign in different mediums. The M-19 gained popularity in areas of the country where the conflict was not affecting much. In 1974, they committed the first attack, stealing the sword of Simon Bolivar from the Museum in Bogota. The sword became their symbol for the revolution.

Latet 60s and early 70s:The first drug cartels were created, with it the appearance of the most powerful cartel at the time from Medellin under the command of Pablo Escobar and the Ochoa brothers. Coming after the cartels from other parts of the country came cartels such as the cartel of the Valle de Cauca with Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela and the Henao brothers, Gonzalo Rodriguez Gacha from the centre of the country, Carlos Lehder in Armenia and Jose Rafael Abello in the Atlantic Coast.

On February 27, 1980, a group of militants from the M-19 took over the Dominican Republic Embassy. Their purpose was to kidnap diplomatic figures and negotiate their lives for the lives of the 320 political prisoners. After 61 days of negotiations they liberated the hostages.

For the last period of the “Frente Nacional” (National Front) in 1970, the conservative candidate Misael Pastrana Borrero faced former president and retired General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla. On April 19 the elections took place leading Misael Pastrana to the presidency of Colombia with numerous allegations of fraud. This event influenced a group of university students to create a new revolutionary group, “el Movimiento del 19 de abril”, or the Movement of April 19.

During the period of 1980, the “FARC” Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, grew very slowly due to the formation of other forces in the country and the abandonment of some of the commanders. In 1982, the Seventh Conference was carried out under the political leader Jacobo Arenas, in which some new strategies were discussed and it was confirm the “combination of all sources for the fighting”, the political and armed battle.

In 1984, a ceasefire was established, as part of the signed agreements with the president in power Belisario Betancourt, known as “Acuerdos de Cese al Fuego, Tregua y Paz” ceasefire, truce and peace agreement. After this the FARC formed the

“Union Patriota” Patriotic Union, a political movement for themselves.

On November 06, 1985 the M-19 carried out the “Operacion Antonio Nariño por los Derechos de Hombre”, which consisted of the taking of the Palace of Justice against the Supreme Court of Colombia. The purpose of the operation was to take all the officials of the Supreme Court hostages in a trial against the president at the time, Belisario Betancourt. The attack lasted approximately 24 hours in which forces of the Military army and the guerrilla held a combat leaving 25 Supreme Court members dead, and many others disappeared.

On 1987, the negotiations with the M-19 and other guerrilla groups started. Differently form the government of Betancourt, former president Virgilio Barco, compromised the executives directly into the conversations. On 1988, the M-19 liberated the Conservative politician Alvaro Gomez Hurtado, leading them to agree in to negotiate with the government to a peace treat. As a result on January of 1990, the members of the M-19 stood down from their armed forces and started their own political party “Alianza Democratica M-19”.

Later that year the leader of the M-19 and presidential candidate Carlos Pizarro was assassinated in Bogota.

began with the armed forces of El Caguan. The demilitarized zone was created for the conversation to take place. On February 2002, the FARC carried out an attack against a Senator, that included kidnaping an airplane. Due to the attack the President Pastrana ended the negotiations with the FARC. That same month, the presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt was kidnaped when she tried to arrive to El Caguan by car.

With the arriving to the presidency of the Republic of Colombia of Alvaro Uribe, a new plan to intensify the combat against FARC began, this process was called “Plan Patriota” or Patriotic Plan.

During his first period as president, there were not initiatives for negotiations or the creation of a humanitarian agreement.

On March 01, 2008, FARC suffered their worst attacks of all, with the death of their commander Luis Edgar Devia Silva mostly known as Raul Reyes during a bomb attack in his camp located in Ecuador. This act lead to a diplomatic crisis between Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela.

That same year, the FARC founder Manuel Marulanda dies of natural cause.

In 2009, the military army of Colombia strike again with the operation “Jaque” in which they accomplished to liberate the presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and other political figures held under the FARC power.

In 2011, Juan Manuel Santos, actual president of Colombia, comes to power. In the year of 2012 the negotiations for the Peace treat started.

On December 2014, both the government and the FARC agreed on a ceasefire to continue with no problems with the process of peace held in La Habana, Cuba.

In 2015, FARC attacked again in the zone of El Cauca, breaking this way the agreement of ceasefire with the government.

On June 23, 2016, FARC and the government of Colombia, signed the peace treaty to end the internal conflict of more than 50 years. This action took place in La Habana, Cuba where all the negotiations were held for a period of 4 years.

On October 02, 2016, a plebiscite would be held to determine if the people of Colombia agree on the new terms of the peace treaty.

The era of the 90’s brought a new president, Cesar Gaviria, and the M-19 started working as a new political party. This gave the opportunity to the FARC and ELN to gain more power over the years. The government brought negotiations to the table, but both groups turn the offer down and changed the way of fighting from a classic guerrilla to a territorial war. By taking over small towns, the FARC and ELN demonstrated that they were becoming a much stronger forced group.

In this same period Colombia expanded the growing of illegal drugs such as cocaine, and many protests were held by farmers which paralyzed the South side of the country.

On December 02, 1993, Pablo Escobar was killed by the Colombian Authorities.

Using radio technology the Search Bloc was able to locate Escobar in a middle class neighbourhood in Medellin. Soon after his death, the cocaine market became dominated by the Cartel of Cali until mid 90’s when they were also killed or captured by the Colombian Government.

Los primeros episodios de guerra en Colombia empezaron desde 1948, cuando el candidato a la presidencia Jorge Eliecer Gaitan fue acecinado en Bogotá. Su muerte causo una revolución en la capital y en el resto del país a cargo de sus seguidores. Esta revolución fue conocida como el “Bogotazo”. Este ataque revolucionario fue principalmente llevado en contra del gobierno Conservador que estaba en el poder en el momento. Después del “Bogotazo”, una nueva era de violencia inicio para el país conocida como “La Violencia”.

Durante el periodo de “La Violencia” desde 1948 a 1958, el país sufrió una guerra entre ambos partidos políticos; los Liberales y los Conservadores. Este periodo de 10 años no fue considerado una guerra civil, sin embargo, fue una muy violenta, la cual incluyo asesinatos, persecuciones, destrucción de propiedad privada y terrorismo por alineamiento político.

En junio 3, de1953, el General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla organizo un golpe de estado en contra del presidente en poder, Laureano Gomez Castro, concebido por los partidos Liberales y Conservadores para restablecer la paz y el orden político en la nación. Su estilo de gobierno fue de dictador militar. Rojas Pinilla se convirtió en el presidente de Colombia desde 1953 hasta 1957 sin ninguna elección popular. En 1957 la población colombiana organizo una protesta masiva alrededor de la nación demandando su resignación. Rojas fue expulsado y este día quedo en la historia como un “Golpe de Estado por Opinión Publica”.

En 1958, los dos partidos políticos de Colombia; Liberales y Conservadores, llegaron a un acuerdo en el cual los dos partidos políticos rotarían por un periodo de cuatro términos presidenciales, un total de 16 años, en el cual cada partido tendría dos periodos presidenciales. Este pacto fue llamado “Frente Nacional”. En 1968, ambos partidos acordaron disolver gradualmente el sistema. Libres elecciones fueron restablecidas en 1974 y continuaron compartiendo burocracia hasta 1978.

Para finales de los 60s y principios de los 70s los primeros carteles fueron creados, con la aparición de uno de los carteles más poderosos en el momento, el cartel de Medellín bajo el comando de Pablo Escobar y los hermanos Ochoa. Poco después surgieron los carteles de otras partes del país como el cartel del Valle del Cauca con Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela y los hermano Henao, Gonzalo Rodriguez Gacha en el centro del país, Carlos Ledher en Armenia y Jose Rafael Abello en la costa Atlántica.

Para el último periodo del “Frente Nacional” en 1970, el candidato conservador Misael Pastrana Borrero enfrento al ex presidente y retirado General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla . En abril 19 las elecciones tomaron lugar llevando a Misael Pastrana a la presidencia de Colombia con numerosas alegaciones de fraude. Este evento llevo a un grupo de estudiantes universitarios a crear un nuevo grupo revolucionario llamado “el Movimiento del 19 de abril”.

El M-19, apareció en la escena años después de las elecciones en el 16 de enero de 1973. Ellos se consideraron una guerrilla urbana después de anunciar campañas en diferentes medios de comunicación. El M-19 gano popularidad en lugares del país donde el conflicto no estaba afectando tanto. En 1974, la organización cometió su primer ataque, el cual consistió en el robo de la espada de Simón Bolívar la cual se encontraba en el Museo en Bogotá. La espada se convirtió en el símbolo de su revolución.

El 27 de febrero de 1980, un grupo de militantes tomo la embajada de Republica Dominicana. Su propósito era secuestrar figuras diplomáticas y negociar sus vidas por las de los 320 presos políticos. Después de 61 días de negociación liberaron los rehenes.

Durante el periodo de 1980, Las FARC “Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia” crecieron lentamente dado a las formaciones de otros grupos armando en el país y el abandono de algunos de sus comandantes. En 1982, la séptima conferencia fue realizada bajo el comando del líder político Jacobo Arenas, en el cual nuevas estrategias fueron discutidas y fueron confirmados W W W. todas “las combinaciones de fuentes para la lucha”, la guerra armada y política.

En 1984, fue establecido un cese al fuego, como parte de los acuerdos con el presidente en poder Belisario Betancourt, conocidos como “Acuerdos de Cese al Fuego,Tregua y Paz”. Después de esto las FARC formaron un partido político llamado “Unión Patriotriotica”.

El 06 de noviembre de 1985, el M-19 llevo a cabo la “Operacion Antonio Nariño por los Derechos del Hombre”, que consistió en la toma del Palacio de Justicia en contra de la Corte Suprema de Justicia de Colombia. El propósito del ataque fue el tomar como rehenes los miembros de la Corte Suprema como prueba de poder en contra del presidente, Belisario Betancourt. La operación duro aproximadamente 24 horas en los cuales las fuerzas armadas y la guerrilla se enfrentaron en combate dejando 25 funcionarios de la corte muertos, y muchos otros desaparecidos.

En 1987, las negociaciones entre el M-19 y otros grupos armados con el gobierno empezaron a tomarse. A diferencia del gobierno de Betancourt, el ex presidente Virgilio Barco, comprometió a los directivos directamente dentro de las conversaciones. En 1988, el M-19 libero al político conservador Alvaro Gomez Hurtado, dirigiéndolos dentro de las negociaciones para un acuerdo de paz.

Como resultado en 1990, los miembros del M-19 renunciaron a las armas y comenzaron su propio partido político llamada “Alianza Democrática M-19”.

Más tarde en ese mismo año el líder del partido y candidato a la presidencia Carlo Pizarro, fue asesinado en Bogotá.

En este mismo periodo, el tráfico de drogas ilícitas como la cocaína creció en el país, y muchas protestas fueron se llevaron a cabo por campesinos que paralizaron la parte sur del país.

El 3 de diciembre de 1993, Pablo Escobar fue asesinado por las autoridades colombianas. Usando tecnología de radios, el Bloque de Búsqueda pudo localizarlo en un barrio de clase media en Medellín. Después de su muerte, el tráfico de cocaína paso a ser dominado por el Cartel de Cali hasta mediados de los 90 cuando estos también fueron asesinados o capturados por el gobierno colombiano.

A partir de 1998 hasta el 2002, con el presidente en mando Andrés Pastrana Arango, las negociaciones de paz empezaron con las fuerzas armadas del Caguan. Una zona desmilitarizada fue creada para que las conversaciones tomaran lugar. EN febrero del 2002, las FARC llevo a cabo un ataque en contra de un Senador, que incluyo el secuestro de un avión. Dado a este ataque, el presidente Andrés Pastrana termino las negociaciones con las FARC. Ese mismo mes, la candidata presidencial Ingrid Betancourt cuando trataba de viajar al Caguan por tierra.

Con la llegada a la presidencia de la Republica de Colombia de Alvaro Uribe, trajo un nuevo plan para intensificarse el combate en contra de las FARC, este proceso fue llamado “Plan Patriota”.

En su primer periodo de mandato, no hubo iniciativas por negociaciones o la creación de un acuerdo humanitario.

En marzo 01 de 2008, las FARC sufrieron los peores ataques, con la muerte de su comandante Luis Edgar Devia Silva comúnmente llamado Raúl Reyes durante un bombardeo en su campamento cerca de Ecuador. Este acto condujo a una crisis diplomática entre Colombia, Ecuador y Venezuela. Ese mismo año, el fundador de las FARC Manuel Marulanda muere por causas naturales.

En 2009, las fuerzas armadas de Colombia golpearon de nuevo con la operación “Jaque” en la cual pudieron conseguir liberar la candidata presidencial Ingrid Betancourt y otras figuras políticas capturados bajo el poder de las FARC. En el 2011, Juan Manuel Santos, el actual presidente de Colombia, llego al poder. En el año 2012 comenzaron las negociaciones con las FARC para el tratado de Paz. En diciembre del 2014, el gobierno y las FARC ambos acordaron un cese al fuego para continuar sin ninguna interrupción el proceso de Paz en La Habana, Cuba. En 2015, las FARC volvieron a atacar en el Caguan rompiendo así el pacto de cese al fuego con el gobierno.

El 23 de junio de 2016, las FARC y el gobierno de Colombia, firmaron el tratado de Paz para terminar el conflicto interno e mas de 50 años. Este acto tuvo lugar en La Habana, Cuba donde todas las negociaciones tomaron lugar en un periodo de 4 años.

En octubre 02 de 2016, un plebiscito se llevará a cabo en el país para que los colombianos voten por el sí o el no a la paz.

Tradiciones de la Navidad en America Latina

En el mundo entero existen diferentes tradiciones navideñas y los países latinoamericanos no son una excepción. Si bien cada uno tiene sus propias costumbres existe un denominador común que nos identifica y hace diferentes, y es el disfrute de deliciosos y variados platos en las cenas de Navidad, al igual la mayoría de países en la región tiene sus propias maneras de celebrar estas fechas.

En México se acostumbra a decorar un árbol de navidad en los hogares y negocios y los 9 días antes de que comience la Navidad –del 16 al 24 de diciembre– se celebran las famosas posadas. Estas fiestas populares se llevan a cabo tienen lugar con el propósito de recordar la peregrinación de María y José desde su salida de Nazaret hasta Belén, donde buscan un lugar para cobijarse y esperar el nacimiento del niño Jesús. En la noche del 24 de diciembre se prepara una cena familiar donde los platos tradicionales juegan un papel primordial; tamales, pavo, romeritos, champurrado, bacalao y/o atole son sólo uno de ellos. Es una noche en la que se reúnen todos los miembros de la familia –usualmente en casa de las abuelas–, haciendo un alto en sus responsabilidades, para conmemorar un año más juntos. Previo al día de la cena se organiza un Amigo Secreto, el cual es un pequeño sorteo de regalos entre familiares, para una vez terminada la cena, intercambiar los regalos y recibir así la Navidad.

Por otro lado, en el bello Ecuador, reuniones familiares tienen lugar el primer fin de semana de Diciembre para decorar el arbolito de navidad al igual que la escena del nacimiento. Durante las mismas, miembros de la familia dan vida a un árbol de navidad que alumbrará las noches fría del mes de diciembre dando calidez y armonía a los hogares, y trayendo consigo el espíritu navideño. Junto a este árbol se suelen colocar estatuillas que representan nacimiento del niño Jesús. Los días antes del 24 de diciembre se realizan ceremonias religiosas.

Durante la cena que tiene lugar el 24 de diciembre se preparan platos típicos ecuatorianos siendo el principal la fritada ecuatoriana, además se cocina sopa de bolas verdes, seco de gallina y finalizan con deliciosos postre como, buñuelos de piña y los tradicionales pristiños. El 24 y 25 de diciembre se llevan a cabo la Misa del gallo y misas al Nazareno en todas las iglesias, misas a las que concurren miles de personas.

En Colombia, rezos y ceremonias religiosas comienza desde principios del mes de diciembre y culminan 9 días antes de la Navidad. El día 24 del propio mes festejan y preparan platos tradicionales como, pavo navideño y buñuelos con natilla. Se reúnen con familiares y amigos con los que comparten, bailan y festejan con entusiasmo la llegada del niño Jesús Chile, al estar ubicado en el hemisferio sur de América Latina, espera la Navidad bajo un radiante W W W. Sol y temperaturas altas pues se encuentra en verano en esta época del año. Celebran cenas familiares en las que se cocina pavo o pollo asado y pan de Pascua acompañándolo de una bebida típica chilena llamada cola de mono. El día 24 se espera la noche con música y mucha alegría. Al finalizar la cena navideña las familias unidas visitan las iglesias y luego regresan a sus hogares para esperar las campanadas de las 12 de la noche y abrir los regalos.

Las tradiciones de los salvadoreños son similares a las tradiciones mexicanas. Festejan las famosas posadas y el día 24 en la noche también preparan una cena familiar; a diferencia de los mexicanos cocinan gallina rellena y lomo de cerdo. Suelen decorar sus casas con ornamentos que traen al hogar el espíritu navideño y disfrutan lanzando fuegos artificiales al aire. El día 7 de diciembre celebran el Día de las conchas, fecha en la que hermosos faroles decoran las fachadas de las viviendas y muchos se reúnen alrededor de fogatas para celebrar y compartir entre familiares y amigos.

En Argentina, a diferencia de otros países latinoamericanos, acostumbran a visitar las iglesias antes de reunirse en sus hogares y al regresar de las misas cenan en familia. Cocinan uno de sus platos típicos navideños, pavo y cerdo, acompañándolos con vino y pan tostado o pan dulce. Suelen decorar las puertas de entrada con un calcetín rojo al iniciar diciembre y decoran un árbol navideño llenándolos de regalos para ser abiertos en la noche del 24 de diciembre.

Para los venezolanos la navidad es una fecha de amor, paz y armonía y la celebran en compañía de sus seres queridos y amigos. Con este breve recuento de las tradiciones navideñas en Latinoamérica podemos observar como cada país tiene tradiciones y comidas propias que los hacen especial, pero lo que es evidente y común para todos es el dedicar esta época del año a compartir con seres queridos y disfrutar estas fechas con amor y alegría, agradeciéndole a Dios por las bendiciones que ha brindado durante todo el año.

There are different Christmas traditions all over the world and the Latin American countries are no exception. While each one has its own customs, there is a common denominator that identifies us and makes us different, and that is the enjoyment of delicious and varied dishes at Christmas dinners, as most countries in the region have their own ways of celebrating these dates.

In Mexico, it is customary to decorate a Christmas tree in homes and business nine days before Christmas starts. From the 16th to the 24th of December, the famous posadas are celebrated. These popular festivals take place with the purpose of remembering Mary and Joseph’s pilgrimage from their departure from Nazareth to Bethlehem, where they sought a place to shelter and wait for the birth of baby Jesus. On the night of Christmas Eve, a family dinner is prepared with the following traditional dishes playing a vital role: tamales, turkey, romeritos, champurrado, cod and/or atole as just some examples. It’s a night where the whole family comes together, 24

1ro de Diciembre Día Mundial de Lucha Contra el VIH/SIDA.

Un año mas de lucha!

Después de años luchando por la invención de una cura contra el VIH/SIDA (Virus de Inmunodeficiencia Humano/Síndrome de Inmunodeficiencia Adquirida) hoy podemos decir que si bien los científicos no han encontrado una cura definitiva, han hecho lo imposible por erradicar de forma absoluta esta enfermedad que tantas muertes ha causado a nivel mundial. Lo anterior se demuestra con estadísticas computadas anualmente por centros de investigación y salud, entre ellos la ONU (Organización de Naciones Unidas).

Desde los inicios de la enfermedad —alrededor de los años 80— se viene advirtiendo de los peligros que acarrea la misma.

Cada año se hace mayor el énfasis que realizan las organizaciones de salud, los medios de comunicación social y los gobiernos de todo el mundo por educar a la sociedad en base a una vida sana, donde los individuos sexualmente activos se protejan.

Anualmente decrece el número de nuevas infecciones y sobre todo el número de muertos por causa del VIH. Esto no sólo se debe a la concientización que se ha creado en la sociedad, sino además al desarrollo de fármacos que elevan el sistema inmunológico de los pacientes y de tratamientos antirretrovirales (ARV) que impiden la reproducción del virus, reduciendo la concentración del mismo en el organismo así como los riesgos de su transmisión.

Las cifras de personas infectadas recogidas hasta el momento, desgraciadamente, no muestran el total real de personas que lo están. En el año 2015 aproximadamente 36,9 millones de personas vivían con VIH en el mundo y alrededor de 15,8 millones recibieron tratamientos antirretrovirales. Todo esto gracias a los esfuerzos realizados por ponerle fin a una de las enfermedades más devastadoras que ha presenciado la historia de la humanidad. Sorprendentemente, la gran mayoría de los países de Latinoaméri28

ca y el Caribe se encuentran posicionados por debajo de países desarrollados en el número de habitantes infectados por VIH/ SIDA. Esto demuestra que aún careciendo de recursos se pueden lograr grandes metas con empeño y voluntad.

En comparación con las cifras registradas en el año 2000, en el año 2014 el número de nuevas infecciones por VIH en América Latina y el Caribe disminuyó en un 17% y un 50% respectivamente. Además en el 2014 se registró que en México alrededor de 174 300 habitantes estaban infectados por el virus y en Barbados 1500; siendo México el país de Latinoamérica con mayor cantidad de habitantes infectados y Barbados el de menor. Por otro lado, Canadá computó un aproximado de 68 000 personas VIH seropositivas.

Aproximadamente 22 millones de personas infectadas en el mundo no tienen acceso a medicamentos y cerca de 17,1 millones desconocen que padecen la enfermedad. Sin dudas queda camino por recorrer para erradicar de forma irreversible esta epidemia. A pesar del decrecimiento en el número de personas afectadas por el virus, es importante continuar insistiendo en la protección y el cuidado al comenzar una vida sexualmente activa. No está mal tener relaciones sexuales, siempre y cuando se realicen con responsabilidad.

Todos los países suman sus fuerzas para eliminar la epidemia de forma definitiva.

ONUSIDA1, con la visión de poner fin a la epidemia para el 2030, ha trazado estrategias y objetivos que deberán ser puestos en marcha en el transcurso del 2016-2020.

Ente sus principales objetivos se encuentran,

1- Reducir a 0 el número de nuevas infecciones y mantener a las personas seropositivas con vida.

2- Que el 90% de las personas (niños, adolescentes y adultos) que viven con el VIH conozcan su estado serológico, que el 90% de éstas estén en tratamiento y que se suprima la carga viral del 90% de las personas en tratamiento.

3- Que el 90% de los jóvenes tengan acceso al conocimiento y la capacidad para protegerse del VIH. El VIH/SIDA no tiene cara y cualquiera PERSONA puede ser víctima del mismo. Es por ello que existe una necesidad imperiosa de aumentar la difusión de consejos que apunten a la educación sexual de los individuos, en todos los medios de difusión y centros educacionales y de salud. Resulta imprescindible la creación de más programas sociales por parte de los gobiernos y organizaciones no gubernamentales, dirigidos no sólo a aquellos que no padecen la enfermedad, sino también a los que la padecen. La exclusión de los enfermos de este tipo de programas educativos, desestimula su deseo de integración y limita sus posibilidades de aportar experiencias útiles a la comunidad. Las personas seropositivas necesitan el soporte de sus seres queridos y de la sociedad, pero a la vez, precisan encontrar un espacio donde puedan vivir una vida plena a pesar su vulnerabilidad.

La campaña de lucha contra el VIH/SIDA requiere el esfuerzo de todos. En nuestras manos están las herramientas para que mientras los científicos buscan por la cura, las personas que padecen la enfermedad no pierda sus esperanzas y deseos de vivir.

December 1st, international day for the struggle against HIV/AIDS

By Patricia Blanco Cruz After years of struggling for the invention of a cure against HIV / AIDS (Human Immunodeficiency Virus / Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) today we can say that although scientists have not found a definitive cure, they have done their utmost to eradicate this disease that has caused so many deaths worldwide. This is demonstrated by statistics computed annually by research and health centers, including the United Nations (UN).

Since the beginning of the disease - around the 80â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s - people have been warned of the dangers that it brings. Every year the efforts that health organizations, media outlets and governments around the world spend on educating society on the basis of a healthy life where sexually active individuals protect themselves increases.

Annually the number of new infections and especially the number of deaths due to HIV decreases. This is not only due to the awareness that has been created in society, but also to the development of drugs that elevate patientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; immune systems and antiretroviral (ARV) treatments that prevent the virus from reproducing, reducing the concentration of the virus in the organism as well as the risks of its transmission.

The numbers of infected people collected so far, unfortunately, does not show the real total number of people who are infected. In the year 2015 approximately 36.9 million people were living with HIV in the world and about 15.8 million received antiretroviral treatments. All this thanks to the efforts made to put an end to one of

the most devastating diseases that human kindâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history has witnessed. Surprisingly, the vast majority of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are positioned below developed countries in the number of people living with HIV / AIDS. This shows that even without resources, great goals can be achieved with determination and will power.

Compared to 2000, the number of new HIV infections in Latin America and the Caribbean declined by 17% and 50%, respectively, in 2014. Also in 2014 it was recorded that in Mexico around 174 300 inhabitants were infected by the virus and in Barbados 1500; being Mexico the Latin American country with more infected inhabitants and Barbados the one with the least. On the other hand, Canada computed an estimated 68,000 HIV-positive people.

Approximately 22 million infected people in the world do not have access to medicines and about 17.1 million are unaware that they have the disease. Undoubtedly, there is still a way to go to irreversibly eradicate this epidemic. Despite the decrease in the number of people affected by the virus, it is important to continue to insist on protection and care when starting a sexually active life. It is not wrong to have sex, as long as it is carried out responsibly.

All countries join forces to eliminate the epidemic definitively. UNAIDS, with the vision of ending the epidemic by 2030, has outlined strategies and objectives that should be implemented during 2016-2020.

Among its main objectives are,

1- Reduce the number of new infections to 0 and keep people living with HIV alive.

2- That 90% of the people (children, adolescents and adults) living with HIV know their serostatus, that 90% of them receive treatment and that the viral load of 90% of the people in treatment is suppressed .

3- That 90% of young people have access to knowledge and ability to protect themselves from HIV. HIV / AIDS has no face and any PERSON can be a victim of it. That is why there is an urgent need to increase the dissemination of advice aimed at the sexual education of individuals in all media and educational and health centers. It is essential to create more social programs by governments and non-governmental organizations, targeting not only those who do not suffer from the disease, but also those who suffer from it.

The exclusion of patients from this type of educational program discourages their desire for integration and limits their possibilities of providing useful experiences to the community.

HIV-positive people need the support of their loved ones and society, but at the same time, they need to find a space where they can live a full life despite their vulnerability.

la vacuna contra la lepra. Fue nominado por dicha invención al Premio Nobel de medicina y no sólo fue pionero en el tratamiento de la mencionada infecciosa enfermedad, sino que además creó disimiles instituciones y centros con el fin de continuar investigando y desarrollando curas para enfermedades endémicas. Gracias a su incondicional servicio a la medicina creó un centro de investigaciones científicas que en aquel momento se llamaría Instituto de Dermatología –actualmente conocido como Instituto de Biomedicina de Caracas–. En dicho centro, en conjunto con un grupo de colaboradores, desarrolló la vacuna contra la leishmaniasis cutánea y realizó aportes al conocimiento de enfermedades como la Micosis y la Oncocercosis profundas.

En Brasil, un grande de la medicina lo constituye el doctor Ivo Hélcio Jardim de Campos Pitanguy, nacido un 5 de julio de 1926 en Belo Horizonte y quien ha sido considerado el padre de la cirugía estética moderna. Fue un gran cirujano y sobre todo vivió su vida con una filosofía muy determinante, en su opinión las personas deben sentirse bien con su imagen para poder sentirse bien con ellos mismo y la cirugía plástica debía ser estudiada como un campo especializado así como el resto de campos dentro de la cirugía. Luchó por “el derecho humano a la belleza”, y aunque muchos lo criticaron y tildaron su trabajo de superficial, con sus precursores procedimientos dejó una huella en la historia de la cirugía plástica en particular y la medicina en general. Tanto él como quienes lo apoyaban coincidían en que el hecho de proporcionar al ser humano una apariencia que lo hiciera sentir cómodo y feliz era una forma de favorecer y fortalecer la autoestima de dicho individuo. No sólo realizó cirugías a celebridades y personalidades de todo el mundo, sino

que además estableció clínicas docentes donde junto a sus estudiantes ofreció asistencia médica gratuita a aquellos que no podían costear el precio de tratamientos como cirugías reconstructivas para curar quemaduras y deformidades. Creó su propia clínica, – Clínica Ivo Pintaguy–, donde transmitió sus conocimientos y procedimientos a cientos de cirujanos. Dicho instituto, además de ser un centro que forma a futuros cirujanos, constituye una sede para investigación y divulgación en cirugía plástica que ofrece soporte a la comunidad científica en esta especialidad. Ivo no sólo fue trascendente en Brasil, sino en diferentes partes del mundo, donde tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar mano a mano con otros muchos reconocidos cirujanos.

Otra eminencia que brindó un gran aporte a la salud nació en México, el 16 de marzo de 1925. Luis Ernesto Miramontes Cárdenas, ingeniero químico que debe su reconocimiento a la labor que realizo sintetizando la hormona que fuera la base para crear el primer anticonceptivo oral. Llamado por algunas fuentes, “el detonador de la revolución sexual”, si bien no estudio medicina aportó un gran legado a la misma.

El título de creador de este anticonceptivo fue una cuestión muy polémica, y en una entrevista que le realizara la Revista de Sociedad Química de Mexico pronunció: “Yo no soy el inventor de la píldora anticonceptiva, el inventor fue el doctor Gregory Pincus, a quien conocí y me distinguió con su amistad; yo soy el descubridor del compuesto químico que originó la mencionada píldora.

Algunos dicen que somos los padres de la píldora, no los inventores”. Fue tan revolucionario su descubrimiento que aún en la actualidad el compuesto que el sintetizara en 1951, continúa siendo uno de los principales ingredientes activos que contienen los anticonceptivos. Sin dudas su labor no solo revolucionó la historia de la medicina, sino que además marcó un antes y un después en la vida de todas las mujeres que consumen dichos medicamentos.

Por otro lado, en Argentina, un 12 de julio de 1923 nace René Gerónimo Favaloro, quien además de desempeñarse como pedagogo fue una eminencia en el campo de la Cardiología. Este increíble médico fue merecedor de su recono-

cimiento internacional debido al desarrollo que realizó del bypass con el uso de vena safena; una de las operaciones más comunes en la actualidad, utilizada en pacientes con problemas cardiovasculares. Gracias al increíble vuelco que dio a la ciencia con su aporte, ayudó a salvar la vida de miles de pacientes que enfrentaron obstrucciones coronarias, así como mejorando y extendiendo la calidad de vida de muchos enfermos en todo el mundo.

Estos profesionales de la ciencia de la salud son sólo algunos ejemplos del potencial médico con el que ha contado América Latina desde siempre.

Diariamente médicos a lo largo del continente llevan a cabo la plausible misión de transformar la ciencia médica en pro del bienestar general. Latin America’s Print on Medicine December 3, Latin American Medicine Day Por Patricia Blanca Cruz

December 3rd marks another celebration of Latin American medicine. Throughout history, the whole world has had a part to play in advances and discoveries in science and medicine, and Latin America has been no exception. The number of famous Latin Americans remembered for their contributions to medicine is innumerable. Many were pioneers in different scientific fields, leaving a legacy, among not just their native lands, but one that spans among all of humanity. Despite not being celebrated worldwide, December 4 is an important date for all Latin American doctors.

It is the perfect time of year to remember and commemorate those who, with limited resources, were able to develop cures to terminal diseases showing that it was possible to work miracles and save lives, to create effective medicines and to conduct research that will be used for generations to come.

This date was chosen in honour of the brilliant Cuban doctor, Carlos Juan Finlay Barrés, who was born on that day in 1833 in Camaguey, Cuba.

Through his research, he was able to discover the transmission vector of yellow fever disease which was a turning point in medical history and saved humanity from a disease that killed thousands of people. Not only did he discover that the Aedes aegypti mosquito is the only species that transmits the disease, he also developed sanitary measures to eliminate it. In addition to his vital work in the eradication of this dis34

ease, Finlay dedicated a large part of his life to the study of other diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, diseases related to vision and leprosy.

Latin America has made varying contributions to the world in different sectors and medicine has been, undoubtedly, one of the most outstanding areas. On September 11, 1913, Venezuela gave birth to one our continent’s finest scientists and doctors, Jacinto Convit, who was awarded the well-deserved and prestigious Prince of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research for the invention of the vaccine against leprosy.

He was nominated for Nobel Prize in Medicine for this invention and not only was he a pioneer in the treatment of the infectious disease, he also created different institutions and centres with the goal of continuing research and developing cures for endemic diseases. Due to his unconditional service to medicine, he created a centre of scientific research that would then be named as the Institute of Dermatology, now known as the Institute of Biomedicine of Caracas. In this centre, together with a group of collaborators, he developed the vaccine against cutaneous leishmaniasis and contributed to the understanding of diseases like Mycosis and deep Onchocerciasis.

Born on June 5, 1926 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil’s doctor Ivo Hélcio Jardim de Campos Pitanguy, is one of the medical field’s greats and has been considered as the father of modern cosmetic surgery. He was a great surgeon and above all, lived his life with a very determined philosophy, in his opinion, people must feel good about their image to be able to feel good about themselves and plastic surgery should be studied as a specialized field just like the other fields within surgery. He fought for “the human right to beauty”, and even though many critizied him and called his work superficial, his precursory procedures left a mark, specifically in the history of plastic surgery, but also in medicine in general. Both he and those who supported him agreed on the fact that providing a human being with an appearance that makes one feel comfortable and happy was a way to favour and strengthen that person’s

self-esteem. Not only did he perform surgeries for celebrities and personalities from all around the world, he also established teaching clinics where he and his students offered free medical care to those who could not afford the cost of treatments such as reconstructive surgery to treat burns and deformities. He created his own clinic, “Ivo Pintaguy Clinic,” where he passed on his knowledge and procedures to hundreds of surgeons. This institute, aside from being a centre that trains future surgeons, also functions as a headquarters for research and outreach in plastic surgery, offering support to the scientific community in this specialty. Ivo was not only an important figure in Brazil, but also in different parts of the world where he had the opportunity to work hand in hand with many other well-known surgeons.

Another eminent figure who contributed greatly o health was born in Mexico, on March 16, 1925. Luis Ernesto Miramontes Cárdenas, a chemical engineer who is known for his work synthesizing the hormone that was the basis of the first oral contraceptive. Called by some sources, the one who “sparked the

sexual revolution,” although he did not study medicine, his legacy includes a great contribution to the field. This discovery literally put him in the hall of fame, being the only Mexican to appear in the USA Inventors Hall of Fame. His title as creator of this contraceptive was a very controversial issue, and in an interview conducted by the Journal of the Mexican Chemical Society, he said, “I am not the inventor of the contraceptive pill, the inventor was doctor Gregory Pincus, who I met and honoured me with his friendship; I am the discoverer of the chemical compound that said pill originated from. Some say that we are the fathers of the pill, not the inventors.”

His discovery was so revolutionary that the compound he synthesized in 1951 is still being used as one of the main active ingredients in contraceptives. Undoubtedly, his work not only revolutionized medical history, but it also marked a before and after in the lives of all women who use these medications.

Additionally, born July 12, 1923 in Argentina, René Gerónimo Favaloro, who aside from his work as a pedagogue, was an eminence in the field of cardiology. This incred-

ible doctor earned his international recognition for the development of the saphenous vein bypass; now one of the most common operations, used in patients with cardiovascular problems. These health science professionals are jut a few examples of the medical potential that Latin America has always had. Everyday, doctors across the continent carry out their mission to transform medical science to improve the general welfare of us all. When you hear the word “soccer”, you think of the beautiful, world-renowned game that is loved by everybody, everywhere. When some people hear the word soccer they think of all the class and skill of the past and present legends, household names like Gullit, Pele, Zidane, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and many more amazing legends that have added to the legacy of soccer, but when you think of the present day there is a standout player that ranks above the rest, that shines like a diamond in the rough. Soccer has never seen such a talent, the way he maneuvers himself around the pitch like the ball is stuck to his foot, his pinpoint precise finishing skills and his cheetah-like agility. The accolades this man has achieved are record breaking and will forever be immortalized in everyone’s mind as one of the best to play the game…and he is only 29 years old, we are talking about Lionel Messi AKA “The Atomic Flea”.

Controversy is stirring up with Lionel lately with him announcing his retirement from international football at the young age of 29.

Messi - the captain of the team - along with his Argentinian peers have had a rough couple of past seasons, starting back in 2007 with the devastating loss to Brazil in the Copa America Finals. After this unfortunate finals loss, it seems like the team has a curse set upon them.

They have been to the Copa America Finals in 2015 and 2016 and they lost both games to powerhouse team Chile led by Messi’s former Barcelona teammate Alexis Sanchez. One of their biggest upsets during this “curse”, was in the 2014 World Cup Finals, when they conceded a goal in the 116’ minute of the game to end up losing the game. During these 4 crucial major finals, they didn’t score a single goal.This year’s Copa America finals game seemed to be

the last straw for Messi, he couldn’t seem to shake this string of bad luck. Messi said after the loss of Copa America 2016, “In the dressing room I thought that this is the end for me with the national team, it’s not for me”. You can clearly sense the disappointment that Messi has with himself for not being able to bring any major championships back to Argentina, especially with his miss in penalties during the game. Messi spoke to reporters and said, “I tried so hard to be champion with Argentina.

But it didn’t happen. I couldn’t do it.”

Anybody in Messi’s position would feel like he let his team down, everybody looks up to him as a leader and he let his team down time after time, but it really wasn’t all his fault, of course he could of done better, but soccer is a team sport. Messi had announced his retirement right after the Copa America Finals.

People today are rejoicing after hearing the great news that the great Lionel Messi will be returning to International Soccer. Maybe the reason Messi initially retired was because he was too overwhelmed at the fact he had lost another major final along with the 3 previous ones as well, or maybe he just needed time to think about his decision, he was just too caught up in having to prove himself to everyone as the captain of the team along with the best player in the world he didn’t think he belonged anymore, but it is great news that he is returning to the team and everyone is wishing him the best of luck in the future. Messi is an all time great at such a young age and there are still more amazing things to come from this young talent and lets hope things will fall in place for Argentina in terms of team play and titles and hope everything works out for Messi, and he will continue to be, “The Atomic Flea”.

Lo encontrado y lo perdido Cuando escuchas la palabra “futbol”, piensas en el hermoso y mundialmente reconocido juego que todo el mundo ama, donde sea. Cuando alguien escucha la palabra “futbol” piensa en toda la clase y habilidades de las legendas del pasado y del futuro. Nombres familiares como: Gullit, Pele, Zidane, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho y muchas otras increíbles leyendas que se han añadido al legado del futbol.

Cuando piensas en el presente hay un jugador que se mantiene por encima del resto, que brilla como diamante en bruto. El futbol nunca ha visto semejante talento, la manera en la que se mueve alrededor del campo, como si la pelota estuviera pegada a su pie, sus habilidades precisas y su agilidad de guepardo. Los premios que este hombre ha alcanzado han roto record y será inmortalizado en la mente de todos como uno de los mejores en este juego…. y solo tiene 29 años, estamos hablando de Liones Messi “La pulga atómica”.

La controversia ha aumentado últimamente debido a su anuncio de retiro del futbol internacional a la edad de 29 años. Messi (el capitan del equipo) junto a sus compañeros argentinos han tenido algunas temporadas pasadas duras. Comenzando en 2007, con la aplastante derrota ante Brasil en la final de la Copa América. Después de esta desafortunada derrota, parece que el equipo tiene una maldición sobre ellos. Han estado en la final de la Copa América en 2015 y 2016 y han perdido ambos juegos frente al gran equipo chileno liderado por el compañero de Messi en el equipo de Barcelona, Alexis Sánchez. Uno de sus mayores disgustos durante esta “maldición”, fue en el final de la copa mundial del 2014, cuando recibieron un gol en el minuto 116 del juego resultando en derrota para el quipo. Durante estas 4 importantes finales, ellos no anotaron ni un gol. Este año, la final de la Copa América pareció ser la ultima gota , él no pudo librarse de toda la mala suerte. Messi dijo después de su derrota en la Copa América del 2016: en los vestidores, pensé que este era el final para mi con el equipo nacional, no es para mi. Se puede sentir la decepción que Messi tiene consigo mismo por no llevar el trofeo del Campeonato consigo a Argentina, en especial, cuando falló en penales durante el juego. Messi habló con los reporteros y dijo: traté con todas mis fuerzas ser campeón con Argentina, pero no sucedió. No pude hacerlo.

Cualquiera en la posición de Messi hubiera sentido que decepcionó a su equipo, todo el mundo lo admira como líder y el decepcionó a su equipo una y otra vez, pero no todo fue su culpa. Por supuesto, pudo hacerlo mejor, pero el futbol es un juego de equipo.

Messi anunció su retiro justo después de la final de la Copa América. Hoy, las personas se están regocijando después de escuchar la gran noticia de que Lionel Messi regresará al futbol internacional. Tal vez, la razón por la que Messi se retiró al principio, fue porque estaba abrumado con el hecho de que había perdido otra importante final así como las tres ultimas, o tal vez, solo necesitaba tiempo para pensar en su decisión. Él estaba demasiado atrapado en tener que probarse ante todos como el capitán del equipo y como el mejor jugador en el mundo, pero es una gran noticia que regresa al equipo y todos le desean la mejor de las suertes en el futuro. Es un gran momento para él a una edad tan joven y todavía hay cosas más asombrosas que vienen de este joven talentoso y esperemos que las cosas se pongan en lugar para Argentina en términos de juego en equipo y títulos. Esperemos que todo funcione para Messi, y él continuará siendo, “la pulga atómica”.

Ingredientes: Ingredients: 5 pounds boneless pork shoulder 3 tablespoons achiote paste 2 tablespoons guajillo chili powder 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon oregano 1 tablespoon cumin 1 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon pepper ¾ cup white vinegar 1 cup pineapple juice 1 pineapple, skinned and sliced into 1-inch rounds 1 thick wooden skewer, trimmed to the height of your oven 1 white onion, chopped finely 1 cup cilantro, chopped finely

5 libras de hombro deshuesado de cerdo 3 cucharadas de pasta de achiote 2 cucharadas de chile guajillo en polvo 1 cucharada de ajo en polvo 1 cucharada de orégano 1 cucharada de comino 1 cucharada de sal 1 cucharada de pimienta ¾ taza de vinagre blanco 1 taza de jugo de piña 1 piña, pelada y cortada en rodajas de 1 pulgada 1 pincho de madera grueso, recortado a la altura de su horno 1 cebolla blanca picada finamente 1 taza de cilantro, picado finamente Preparación:

6. Retire el cerdo de la nevera y empuje las rodajas a través de la brocheta, una tras otra hasta que solo quede una pulgada en la parte superior. Finalmente, empuje otra rebanada de piña en la parte superior.

7. Bake for about an hour and a half, until slightly charred on the outside and deep red.

8. Rest the meat for about 10 minutes, then carve off thin slices of the pork. Slice off thin pieces of the roasted pineapples as well.
