Hola! In this issue, we are focusing particularly on the Toronto mayoral election that will take place next month on Monday, October 27. In addition to candidate profiles, two interviews, and other issues relevant to you, our readers, we have also included information on how to register if you will be voting for the first time. It is important to not only know your rights and obligations as a citizen, but also to vote for a candidate that aligns with your interests and issues. Avenida Latina strongly believes youth deserve to be properly represented in all levels of government since they are the future. We have also reached a new milestone with the release of this issue: Avenida is now two years old! During that time, Avenida has accomplished many achievements, from establishing ourselves in the Latin American community in Toronto to creating our website. We would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us in this journey. As always, if you are interested in joining or advertising with us, please do not hesitate to contact us!

What you need to know about civic engagement.
O
n June 12 this year, Ontarians above the age of majority (18) were called to cast their vote in the election for a new premier. Once each vote was counted for each of the electoral districts or ridings, each elected Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) won a seat in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The winning seats were counted by each political party and Kathleen Wynne, the 6

Liberal Party leader won a majority and regained her role as Premier of Ontario. Why is this important you ask? Let’s take a closer look into this. There are 107 electoral districts in Ontario and each representative elected represents the population living within the riding (or district) at
“We all have different views of how Toronto should be run and we should make our voices heard.” Queen’s Park. For example, if “Tom Smith” is elected, he will represent
over 100,000 Ontarian citizens living in the Electoral District “YC”. That is a lot of people with voices to be heard. What happens if you do not agree with or want what the representative or MPP stands for promises to accomplish? What if your interests differ from theirs? What do you do? This is where civic engagement comes into play. The Journal for Transformative Education describes Civic Engagement as “the ways in which citizens participate in the life of a community in order to improve conditions for others or to help WWW.AVENIDAMAGAZINE.CA
shape the community’s future”. Be it by advocating, community development, volunteering or public scholarship, being engaged “civically” is important for a community as big as ours to grow. Activities such as participating in municipal/provincial/federal elections, supporting, becoming familiar with electoral district representatives, or assisting in registering citizens to vote are all integral to civic engagement.

Environmental Damage by Large Corporations Chevron is one of the world’s top three leading energy companies in the world. They specialises in searching for and extracting crude oil and natural gas. In their vision of the company they claim to provide safe energy products, as well as care for the safety of the environment and individuals who work for them. However in recent years Chevron has come across many legal disputes due to unsafe working environment conditions and working practices, a 4

majority of these having to do with employee accidents due to unsafe work environments. Many of these disputes/issues involve Latin American countries such as Colombia, Ec-

When confronted they brought a court order for $99.5 billion in environmental and public health damages, Chevron claimed the damages were fraudulent and ordered the country to pay for the damages themselves. Luckily, as a result, Coca Cola had decided to pour $1 billion into the country’s economy to help repair the damages. na, Brazil, and Canada. The very thought of such a massive moneymaking company not wanting to take responsibility for their actions was enough to raise attention by both the media and surrounding neighboring countries. Twelve Latin American countries have made plans
to form an organization to stand up against Chevron. Their goal is to bring awareness to the public about the wrong that the company has done to so in many countries in the due to the possibility that it may happen again.

Doce países de América Latina hicieron planes para ponerse de pie en contra de Chevron. Su objetivo es llamar la atención del público mostrando el mal que la compañía ha hecho a través de los años en algunos países; lo cual habrían una posibilidad de que pueda ocurrir de nuevo. Esta situación no ha sido la primera en pasar, como similarmente ha ocurrido en países como China, Brasil y aquí en Canadá. La mayoría de estos problemas tiene que ver con la negligencia en la inseguridad en el ambiente de trabajo.

CHILLIWACK’S ANIMAL ABUSE By: Joseph Bertand
Petition launched to boycott dairy farm if action is not taken
A petition was launched in change.org by Mercy for Animals Canada which horrified thousands of people in terms of content. The petition called for British Columbian dairy farms to take action upon evidence of animal abuse. It was signed by over 100,000 supporters and demanded that Saputo assess the evidence of animal abuse by one of their suppliers Chilliwack Cattle Sales. The petition also advocates for implementation of an animal welfare policy that includes the following: proper treatment for sick and injured animals, monitoring systems streamed live, and a zero tolerance for abuse. Supporters also 8

threatened to boycott Saputo if it does not comply. The evidence provided was an undercover video taken by one of the activists from Mercy for Animals Canada. The
-Chilliwack Cattle Sales milk pick-up suspended over video -Chilliwack Cattle Sales to fire 8 workers caught on tape abusing cows -Chilliwack Cattle Sales owners previously investigated for injured cattle, E. Coli video displayed how farm workers viciously abused and tortured the cows. It also showed cows suffering from debilitating injuries as workers kicked them, beat them with metal rods, and pulled off their
hair. The British Columbian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) has launched an investigation and stated that the company is cooperating. The co-owner of the farm, Jeff Kooyman, stated that none of the owners knew of the abuse that happening. However, Mercy for Animals Canada rejected his statement. In addition, they charge that the company failed to provide sufficient training or address the concerns raised by the undercover worker. “BCSPCA enforcement officer Marcie Moriarty said Chilliwack Cattle Sales has so far been cooperating with its investigation. The BCSPCA is recommending charges of animal cruelty against the eight employees” (CBC). On June 14, the BC Milk Marketing Board released an industry notice where it stated that the members of the board have met and agreed to adhere to the BCSPCA regulations as well as add monitoring systems, along, along with improving the animals’ overall quality of life. The three main candidates that are leading the race are Olivia Chow, John Tory and Rob Ford. We have followed their campaigns and have read their platforms, but what most people do not realize is that they

organ Baskin is an active community volunteer and a high school student. Baskin made the inspiring decision to run as a mayoral candidate rather than casting her vote towards other candidates. Baskin believes that if we want youth initiatives to be delivered and executed we have to engage and participate in politics to have our voices heard, which is why she took the stance to run for mayor. We interviewed Baskin to get a more personal response as to why she is participating and what she hopes to do if she were elected Mayor.

Baskin hizo su motivante decision de postularse para el cargo de alcalde en vez de emitir y dar su voto a otros candidatos. Baskin cree que si queremos que las iniciativas para los jovenes sean ejecutadas y mantenidas, nosotros tenemos que involucrarnos y participar en la politica para que nuestras voces sean eschuchadas. Por eso ella tomó la candidatura para ser elegida como alcalde. Nosotros entrevistamos a Baskin para recibir una respuesta personal porque ella decidio participar y que espera ella al ser elegida. INTERVIEW WITH AVENIDA! Q: Why are you interested in running for mayor? | ¿Porqué esta interesada en postularse como alcalde? A: I am very much focused on the issues of young people. I was frustrated with many of the issues we face as a city, especially for young people and I want to work towards solutions. | R: Estoy muy enfocada en los problemas de los jóvenes. Estoy frustrada con muchos de los problemas que nosotros enfrentamos en esta ciudad especialmente con los jóvenes y quiero trabajar dando soluciones.
Q: Why do you think the youth (18 26) vote is important? | ¿Porqué cree que el voto de los jóvenes (18 - 26) es muy importante?

A: Because every vote is important. Young people are a large segment of the population and us not voting is hurting democracy as a whole. | R: Porque cada voto es importante. Los jovenes son una gran porcion de la poblacion y si ellos no votan eso perjudica a la democracia entera.
Q: As one of the youngest candidates running for mayor, what challenges have you faced during your campaign? | ¿Como una de las candidatas más jóvenes que se disputa la alcaldía, ¿qué desafíos ha enfrentado durante su campaña? A: Certainly getting people to take me seriously is always a challenge, but it is one that I welcome. Young people in this city are smart and capable and if I can have a part in proving that, so be it | R: Sin duda he logrando que la gente me tome en serio ya que siempre es un desafío, pero es algo que me complace. Los jóvenes de esta ciudad son inteligentes y capaces, y yo puedo tener un papel importante demostrando eso, que así sea.
We did a great job at bringing the world to Toronto, now how can we do a better job at serving the people who came here. Ensuring people have jobs in their skill sets allows them to live a better life and allows us all to benefit from their contribution. Also, we need to do better at bringing Toronto to the world. Lastly we need to take care of our green space from parks and the waterfront to our huge urban forest. Part of that also means taking care of the environment as a whole, creating less waste and reducing emissions. | R: Mi plataforma electoral es digital, global, y verde-centrado. Se centra en cómo podemos utilizar la tecnología para hacer nuestra ciudad mejor, concentrado específicamente con las barreras de lenguaje y habilidades. Hicimos un gran trabajo al traer Toronto al mundo, ahora ¿cómo podemos hacer un mejor trabajo en sirviendo a las personas que vinieron a esta ciudad? Garantizando que las personas tienen puestos de trabajo conforme con sus habilidades les permita vivir una vida mejor y nos permita beneficiarnos de sus contribuciónes. R
ichard Underhill – Underhill is a Juno award-winning Jazz musician (Saxophonist), a composer, community advocate and now a Mayoral Candidate. Underhill believes that Toronto deserves better leadership and exposure (considering the negative attention Toronto faced with the Rob Ford scandals) and has decided to run because he would like to make Toronto a better city and repair its reputation. Underhill feels he is a good mayoral candidate because he is a fiscally responsible, socially progressive candidate with innovative ideas that can provide real solutions for Toronto’s pressing problems.

Chan wants to help the millennials and youth in the city. She says that they are not included in political discussions and are often ignored. Chan also states that under the Rob Ford administration, community grants to the arts have been cut and she would like to see them brought back. Chan would like to represent young people, especially since many after-school programs have been cut and because their voices are not heard.

How added sugar invaded our food supply and how Big Food is hiding its dirty little secret • Como los azúcares han invadido nuestras comidas y como las multinacionales esconden su pequeño secreto sucio • BY B. GUERRA

ver the past 3 decades as obesity rates have doubled amongst the world’s population, the scientific community has attempted to wage war against the causes as to why people are getting larger and why it is an alarmingly increasing amount of people are suffering from diseases such as Diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Cancer.
Amongst the researchers making waves is University of California (San Francisco) Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology, Dr. Robert H. Lustig, a specialist in childhood obesity, whose lectures, Sugar: The Bitter Truth and Fat Chance: Fructose 2.0, show the dangers of added sugars and its’ role in today’s processed food industry have gone viral with over a combined 5 million Youtube hits. Dr. Lustig argues that the overabundance of sugar, with emphasis on high fructose corn syrup, HFCS for short, in today’s processed convenience foods has lead to the dramatic increase in rates of obesity. He also claims that this rise in obesity is not responsible for the dangerously increasing rate of persons suffering from components of The Metabolic Syndrome (Type-2 Diabetes, Heart Disease, Lipid problems [blood fats], Cancer, Dementia, and Hypertension), but rather is a signal as to something worse with what we as human beings are consuming. Dr. Lustig points the blame as to why obesity happens not solely to personal responsibility as the public often does, but instead states that the behaviours of obese people can be caused by a problem with their internal biochemistry and the processes behind them. His arguments in both lectures debunks the last 50 years of ‘common sense’ about calories and asks the audience and makes the audience wonder the answer to his question: “If after WWII, we saw dangers from fat and sugar and chose to eliminate fat from our diets, why is it that people are still becoming sick?” His answer to the problem: Cut out added sugars. Simple enough it seems. Unfortunately, the North American food industry, which on a yearly basis produces about 1 trillion dollars ($1,000,000,000,000) claims that by releasing full ingredients lists competitors can easily copy their formulas. As a result, we on the consuming end are left confused about what exactly is in our food and unable to make informed decisions about what foods we buy on a daily basis. In order to stay healthy in this processed-food filled world we all need to be diligent and patient when grocery shopping. Not only are nutritional labels made a mystery by Big Food but they are also responsible for making it impossible to identify added sugars in traditionally unsweetened foods by using over 50 alternate names for sugar. (For your convenience we’ve listed 56 known names of sugar and their variants that when inserted into the human body produce the same chemical reaction.)

Jaime Escalante was born in La Paz, Bolivia to parents of Aymara descent, who were also teachers. He is famous for teaching calculus to students at Garfield High School in Eastern Los Angeles deemed “unteachable” by administration from 1974 to 1991. Although Escalante taught math and physics back in Bolivia, he had to work several odd jobs and obtain new credentials when he immigrated to the United States in search of a better life. Despite initial setbacks in the classroom and opposition from school officials, Escalante encouraged his students to live up to their potential in mathematics and prepared them for their advanced placement calculus exams. Escalante’s work with his students was made into the 1988 film Stand and Deliver.
Born in Cartago, Costa Rica, Francisca “Pancha” Carrasco Jiménez was the first woman in the Costa Rican military. In 1856, the US filibuster (a person who engages in unauthorized foreign military campaigns) William Walker had taken over Nicaragua and ordered the invasion of Costa Rica. Pancha Carrasco decided to join the militia and was assigned as a cook and medic. However, during the Battle of Rivas, she entered the battlefield after grabbing a rifle and filling her apron pockets with bullets. Her participation boosted morale and prevented the men from retreating. Ultimately, William Walker and his fellow filibusters were defeated. Pancha’s achievements became a source of national pride and has had awards named after her in Latin America.

A war leader of the Lenca people in western Honduras, Lempira led a resistance against Spanish conquistadores during the 1530s. His name means “Lord of the Mountain” in the Lenca language. Lempira managed to gather over 30,000 soldiers from 200 villages, thus unifying many Indigenous communities, and kept the conquistadores at bay for several months. In 1537, Lempira was killed when the Spanish lured him from his fort under the pretence of holding peace talks, only to be shot when he indicated his intention to continue fighting. Despite this, Lempira is considered a national hero in Honduras for his resistance.
María Ester Gatti de Islas was an Uruguayan teacher turned human rights activist. She founded Uruguayan Mothers and Families of Disappeared Prisoners after her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter were abducted in Argentina (which was under a dictatorship) while campaigning against Uruguay’s own military regime. Around 300 Uruguayans are believed to have been forcibly disappeared in nearby countries during this time period of dictatorships and human rights abuses. Through her activism and partnership with Argentina’s Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, María spent the rest of her life denouncing political disappearances and helping people seek justice for their disappeared loved ones, while searching for her family. Although her daughter and son-in-law were never found, she was eventually reunited with her granddaughter in 1992 after the kidnappers were located in Paraguay.

What do you think are the biggest obstacles Latin American families face in Toronto?
Avenida Magazine recently had the opportunity to interview TDSB trustee candidate Matias de Dovitiis: Having immigrated to Canada at the age of 11, what was your school experience like? I wanted to go back [home]. I was forced to repeat grade 5 which I didn’t think was fair since back home, I was taught at a more advanced level. I learned later though, that it was because of my birthdate. I couldn’t speak with a lot of kids and no one understood me, so it was a big cultural shock.
What made your situation easier? Understanding Canadian culture and the difference between what was okay to do back home and what was okay here. 22

to grow in your opinion?
Our obstacles are not that different from the ones other cultures face. However, I think they bigger barriers for us since other communities come in bigger numbers. Also there are differences between Latinos from different countries. There are also a lot of unspoken skills that Canadians need in order to be successful. Because parents aren’t being successful at work, in the same way, the kids aren’t being successful at school either.
You know one of the things that makes me proud is going back to university and seeing OLAS 13-14 years after I was there. I think back to when we wanted to create a space where Latinos could feel that there was a space where they belonged, where they could share their experiences, simply or go dancing. Just to be able to see younger generations have things way better than we did you know makes me very happy. You [young people] are the reason why I feel a lot of these programs are successful, because they fill a need.
ESL programs, nutrition programs, and accessibility issues all affect the success of students. Which of these factors have been the most difficult to tackle within school?
On October 27, you are encouraging residents to come out and vote for you to become TDSB trustee. What changes would you like to see happen in this organizations?
The school board receives money for all them. However they decide to use it on something else since they are short on funds. The Ministry of Education is shortchanging kids who have the least opportunities by allowing the loss of these programs that create bridges and cover gaps in the education system. This is something systemic that has been happening for over 15 years, therefore creating a generation of kids that don’t have access to the same quality of education as others.
Right now I don’t think we are sharing the educational pie in an equitable way. I think communities that need the most resources are being underfunded because the TDSB itself is being underfunded. I feel we should give every single student the same high quality education they deserve and right now we are not doing that. I’ll give you a little history lesson: Toronto has had 150 years or so of free public education. We were one of the first places to provide so and we are starting to forget why we did this — why it is important that we all have the same minimum education to be able to share a standard as a society for all of us to live in.
You’ve also helped fund a lot of organizations in the past decade such as Teach2Learn, OLAS, CONOCER, and the Downsview Advocate community paper, etc. What are some key aspects that let these organizations continue

Yo quería volver [a casa]. Me vi obligado a repetir grado 5, no pensé que era justo, ya que en mi paiz me enseñaron a un nivel más avanzado. While the following timeline highlights many political events, it also includes moments that try to captivate the spirit of Latin American culture. From colonial invasion to the death of leaders like Hugo Chavez, here is a look back at the last 600 years…
1898 – Under the Treaty of Paris, Puerto Rico is surrendered by the Spanish to the US at the end of the Spanish-American War. 20 years later, Puerto Ricans are granted US citizenship and continue to be a US territory until today.
1930 – Uruguay wins the inaugural FIFA World Cup, defeating Argentina 4-2 in Montevideo.
1431 - Establishment of the Triple Alliance between the Mexica, the Acolhua in the city Texcoco and the Tepaneca of Tlacopan. These cities became the foundation of the Aztec empire.
1959 1823 – Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras & Nicaragua unite to form the United Provinces of Central America only to dissolve in 1840.
1438 - Holding their capital in Cuzco, the Inca civilization dominated the Andes region from 1438 to 1533. Known for being highly distinct and developed, cities were built with precise, unmatched stonework, constructed over many levels of mountain terrain.

1731 – Jose de Antoquera, leader of an insurrection in Paraguay against the viceroy and the king, is arrested and executed in Lima.

– Silver Mountain, or Cerro Rico, discovered at Potosi in southwest Bolivia, provides Spain with immense wealth.

– Cuban communist revolutionary Fidel Castro is elected Prime Minister of Cuba and goes to lead the country until the next century in 2008. Under Castro’s Cuba, illiteracy and health care systems would flourish having more doctors than many developed countries. However, under this regime, many human rights violations have been reported, including the silencing of political opposition.

2014 - Poverty and inequality still remain the greatest challenges in Latin America. About 26% of the region’s people have no access to basic sanitation.
2012 – President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez dies at the age of 58. Chavez has been one of Latin America’s most controversial leaders (both a praised and criticized leader). During his presidency, he gained control of national oil, transforming its performance leaving “a dramatic reduction in debt and an accumulation of currency reserves sufficient to offer significant protection from fluctuations in oil prices” (Toro & O’Neill, 2009). This economic success has been used to eradicate illiteracy, provide free healthcare to the majority of the population for the first time and radically reduce poverty.
2010 – Argentina becomes the first country in Latin America to allow same-sex marriage nationwide. Brazil & Uruguay would follow the same steps in 2013. In Mexico, it is performed in Mexico City and the state of Quintana Roo.

OJEN/ROEJ provides school based projects and resources at both the elementary and secondary level and also conducts outreach in partnership with community organizations to youth who might not choose to take law classes in school. Jus-
tice education initiatives range from court visits, mock trials, youth/police dialogues and active citizen’s projects among many others. Over 200 teaching resources are available free of charge in both English and French on the OJEN/ROEJ website.

A collaboration with the Ontario Justice Education Network
Avenida Team learns about the rights of undocumented persons with OJEN coordinators.
T
his summer, Avenida staff and the Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN) collaborated at the Centre for Spanish Speaking Peoples to share our experiences with the immigration system and the law. During this two hour workshop, we learned about the ways in which people migrate, the process of refugee claims and the differences between being a permanent resident and a citizen. As the workshop was geared towards youth, the facilitators from OJEN presented interactive skits for youth to act out such as being confronted by authority figures questioning their immigration status. What we learned through these skits is that no matter what someone’s status is in this country, we all

have the right to silence in our own homes. You can remain as quiet as you’d like even if immigration officials are demanding you to open the door. When in school, legally speaking, the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) is not allowed within the Toronto District School Board. The CBSA also does not have the power to arrest you. Here is a guide that provides basic legal information to people without immigration status, so that they will be able to protect themselves from the risks of immigration arrest and detention.
1. 1. You have the right to privacy and silence in your own home 2. 2. Ask to see an arrest warrant and a special entry warrant before opening your door to CBSA (Canada Border Service Agency). 3. 3. You must identify yourself if stopped by police while driving a car or riding a bike, you need not answer further questions. 4. 4. You do not have to identify yourself if stopped by police on the street unless you are under arrest. 30

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES SITIOS ARQUEOLÓGICOS
By: Gaby Aguirre When it comes to archaeological sites in Latin America, the most well known ones that immediately come to mind are Chichen Itza in Mexico and Machu Picchu in Peru. However, just as there is a vast amount of biodiversity in the living environments of Latin America, there are numerous archaeological sites from different time periods. The following four sites are just a snapshot of the many cultural and historical legacies left behind: Cuando se trata de sitios arqueológicos en América Latina, los que inmediatamente nos vienen a la mente como los mas conocidos son Chichén Itzá en México y Machu Picchu en Perú. El Mirador, Guatemala

El Mirador (“The Viewpoint” in Spanish) is located in the department of Petén in Guatemala. It was once a Mayan city that flourished from the 6th to the 1st centuries BCE. El Mirador was originally rediscovered in 1926, however, due to its remote location in the jungles, examination
of the site officially began during the 60s and 70s. One of its pyramids, La Danta, is considered one of the largest pyramids in the world in terms of volume. Like other nearby cities, El Mirador was abandoned by around 150 CE. Current threats to El Mirador include deforestation and looting.

Joya de Ceren, El Salvador Known as “the Pompeii of the Americas,” what distinguishes Joya de Ceren from other Mayan sites is that it was once a farming village, which are rarely preserved in contrast to temples and pyramids. Joya de Ceren was occupied as early as 1200 BCE. It had been previously evacuated and repopulated at various times in its history due to the eruption of the Ilopango volcano. It
was finally buried under layers of ash from the eruption of the Laguna Caldera volcano around 600 CE. While the villagers were able to flee on time, the village was remarkably preserved and provide information on the life of non-elite people in that time period. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993.

Ciudad Perdida, Colombia Ciudad Perdida means “Lost City” in Spanish. It was an ancient city located in Sierra Nevada, Colombia. Believed to have been founded 650 years before Machu Picchu, it was “found again” by looters coming across stone steps rising up the mountain, thereby leading to the site. It is also known as Teyuna to the Indigenous peoples in the area. The city was
built by the Tairona people and had between 1,000 - 3,000 inhabitants and was divided into 250 terraces carved into the mountainside and connected together through a network of stairs and pathways. Ciudad Perdida was affected and threatened at one point during the Colombian conflict with tourist hikes only restarting in 2005.

Chan Chan was built by the Chimú civilization, which arose from the remains of the Moche civilization. It is the largest Pre-Colombian archaeological site in South America and is made entirely of adobe brick. Chan Chan was built in 850 AD and lasted until the fall of the
Inca Empire in 1470 AD. At one point, 30,000 people lived in the city. Despite its location in the desert, Chan Chan was maintained due to a network of canals and irrigations built into it. However, today the site is threatened by erosion and the effects of El Niño.

mmediately upon seeing the Inti Raymi promotional poster, I thought of the sun and to no surprise, the entire celebration revolves around it. The event was held on June 21 and 22 at Christie Pits park. Luckily, since the weather was gorgeous during the weekend, anyone who ventured into the park, whether on purpose or by accident, was guaranteed to fully experience enjoyment at the event. The Inti Raymi Festival is a religious ceremony that originated in the Inca Empire in honour of the sun god, Inti. It takes place at the winter solstice (in the southern hemisphere) or summer solstice (in the northern hemisphere) when the sun is the farthest from the earth. According to Inca history, in fear of the lack of sun and

their crops, the Incas would gather in Cuzco to worship the Sun God and ask for his return, then present gifts, dances, and even sacrifices as part of their celebration. While sacrifices are not part of the modern day festival, delicious food, breathtaking music and dancing are still part of Inti Raymi. I went on the second day, which according to the event schedule, local Latino artists such as Yus Diva and Joyce Aldrich preformed. Traditional South American dances were preformed as well such as Sumac Tisuy, a Bolivian dance group. Of course, no Latino event is complete without food and contained yummy meals like empanadas, pupusas, carne asada and treats

Inti Ra such as churros. Manuela, who was one of the many people that organized the event, commented how it “really turned out great”. Watching the folk dances with pupusas in one hand and churros in another is a definite sign that Inti Raymi was a good time, and I am absolutely willing to go in the upcoming years (Who wouldn’t want more churros?).

evento. El festival Inti Raymi se trata de una ceremonia religiosa procedente del Imperio Inca en honor al dios del sol, Inti. El festival tiene lugar durante el solsticio de invierno (en el hemisferio sur) o el solsiticio de verano (en el hemisferio norte) cuando el sol está más alejado de la tierra. De acuerdo con la historia Inca, por temor a la falta de sol y sus cosechas, los Incas se reunían en Cuzco para honrar al dios del sol y pedir su regreso, por lo tanto, presentaban regalos, bailes, e incluso sacrificios como parte de su celebración. Afortunadamente, los sacrificios no son parte de la norma comtemporanea, pero la comida deliciosa, música impresionante y el baile son todavía parte de la celebración. Fui en el segundo día, que de acuerdo con el programa delevento, los artistas locales
latinos Yus Diva y Joyce Aldrich se presentaron. Bailes folkloricos se llevaron a cabo, así como los de Sumac Tisuy, un grupo de danza boliviana. ¡Por supuesto, ningún evento Latino está completa sin comida! Comidas deliciosas como las empanadas, pupusas, y la carne asada se vendíeron, ademas se vendieron los churros. Manuela, una de las muchas personas que organizaron el evento, comentó cómo “Realmente resultó genial”. Viendo los bailes folkloricos con pupusa en una mano y un churro en otro era una señal definitiva de que el festival Inti Raymi. Estoy absolutamente dispuesta a ir en los próximos años. (¿Quién no quiera más churros?)

The fashion industry has already laid out the trends that are sure to be emerging later in the year. As the saying goes, “it is always better to be ahead of the game”. Here are some popular trends that appeared on the runways of the 2014 fall/winter Ready-to-Wear Fashion Shows. h verano! 1. Preheat oven to 190C (375F). 2. In a large bowl, beat butter, sugars until fluffy. 3. Beat in vanilla and eggs until creamy. 4. In a medium bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, and salt; Add to butter mixture. 5. Stir in chocolate chips. 6. Drop by spoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet. 7. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned. 8. Let cool slightly; remove from cookie sheet when cool.

1. Combine quinoa and water in a pot until boiled. 2. Reduce heat, cover the pot and let quinoa simmer until tender (approx. 20 mins) 3. Serve warm with salsa, eggs or milk.
