Welcome to our first edition of Avenida magazine!

Who are we? You ask, we are you! This magazine is brought to you by young Latin Americans, ages 13-23, from all across Toronto. Our goal is to engage you with articles that deal with everyday life. From sharing school experiences, discussing social issues to giving you health/career tips, we are here for you.

We can’t express how thrilling it is to be part of a magazine that is produced for youth by youth.

The launching of Avenida is a proud moment for us here because the people who contribute to this magazine have gone through a showcase of training workshops in order to deliver you this, our first piece.

The staff would like to thank the people who led our media trainings and writing workshops: Cynthia Munster, Dalila Rubin, Gerardo Betancourt, Simon Black, Sofía Grande, and Yoandra Martínez. From teaching us on how to deliver constructive articles to the design and photography of the magazine, we learned essential tools that will be benefit us outside the realm of the magazine. We would also like to give a special thank you to the Centre for Spanish Speaking Peoples and the Ontario Trillium Foundation for supporting the magazine since the beginning.

¡Bienvenidos a nuestra primera edición de la revista Avenida! ¿Quiénes somos? Te preguntarás, ¡Somos tú! Esta revista la hacemos jóvenes latinos de 13 a 23 años de edad, de todo Toronto. Nuestro objetivo es atraerte con artículos que hablan de la vida diaria. Desde compartir experiencias en la escuela, debatir temas sociales, a dar consejos de salud o carrera, estamos aquí para ti.

No podemos explicar lo emocionante que es ser parte de una revista que es producida por jóvenes para jóvenes. El lanzamiento de Avenida es un momento de orgullo para nosotros porque los jóvenes que contribuyen a esta revista han pasado por una serie de entrenamientos para poder entregarte esta, nuestra primera pieza.

El equipo quisiera agradecer a la gente que condujo nuestros entrenamientos de medios y periodismo: Cynthia Munster, Dalila Rubin, Gerardo Betancourt, Simon Black, Sofía Grande, y Yoandra Martínez.

Desde enseñarnos a escribir artículos constructivos, al diseño y la fotografía de la revista, aprendimos herramientas esenciales que nos serán útiles fuera del marco de la revista. Quisiéramos dar también un reconocimiento especial al Centro para Gente de Habla Hispana y la Fundación Trillium de Ontario por apoyar a la revista desde sus comienzos.

The staff members of Avenida were asked different questions about their time with this project, community building and our high school experience; get to know us!

We are a mixed group of individuals as young as 13 to folks in their early 20s. The great thing about Avenida Latina is that it thrives on the diverse cultures and experiences of the staff members, which makes the articles friendly to readers in high school and beyond.

What stereotypes do you hear about Latin Americans?

Whether at school or in the media, we constantly keep on hearing generalizations that negatively depict the Latin culture. The staff shared the same answers about Latin American stereotypes. Our design editor, Ricardo, said that he has heard “countless stereotypes of Latin Americans… we love to eat our tacos, or we are criminals. We are lazy and ignorant.”

Melanie, fellow writing editor, suggests that we “should never wave off the stereotypical jokes. Be straight up with people and make sure they understand that those jokes are not funny.” Veronica has had a mixed experience; “as a Latina Mexican woman” –she says - “a stereotype attributed to me is that I’m ‘exotic.’ I find this very harmful and ignorant. This just adds up to the list of hardships a woman like me faces.”

What do you hope to learn and what have you learned from taking part in Avenida Magazine?

Do you (or Did you) feel like you belong in high school?

While we share a similar culture, taking part in Avenida opens up a world of diverse opinions, values and ways of interacting with one another. One of our editors, Kamila, believes that in order to develop her career as a journalist, learning to communicate with members with different personalities is essential. “I have learned to accept other people’s points of view and I have learned - and I’m still learning - to be more open and speak up, to not be so shy.”

What I (Giancarlo) can say about my experience is that, while every staff member leads a busy schedule, we are very committed to this project because we believe the Latin community needs and wants the voices of youth to be heard. For the upcoming issues we hope to have a clear idea of the types of topics that interest you, our readers, and have some of your articles published!

The reality is that many of us don’t feel like we belong in high school. Veronica stresses that “high school is a very harsh environment and this society does not value the voices of youth; also, there is a very negative sentiment towards immigrants in many sections of Canadian society. I experienced racism, sexism, isolation, rejection, and cultural shock”.

Interestingly enough, some of the members who felt they belonged in high school noted that it was because they were able to learn English at an early age. Melanie says, “I feel that I belong with certain groups in high school, yes. This is because I moved to Canada when I was 7 and I’ve had plenty of time to learn English and assimilate into the Canadian culture.” My story is very similar to Melanie’s, because I noticed that since I came at an early age, I had an advantage over my friends who came later and took ESL classes. My Spanish-speaking friends and I have seen that the academic expectations are lower for ESL students; the assumption is that ESL students can’t compete academically with the rest of the class.

What does community building mean to you?

Avenida Magazine is a great platform for youth to contribute to their community.This group of young people shows a desire in Latin youth to get involved, to have a positive influence on others and make a difference in their schools and neighborhoods. Here we also strive to create friendships so we feel more comfortable with one another. As Veronica, a photographer for Avenida, puts it “community building is about creating spaces that are safe for everyone. Its purpose is to fulfill people’s needs. We should provide comfort,

What advice can you give other Latin American students, those new to the country and those who aren’t?

Avenida writer Olivia recommends students “to be themselves and ask for help, not just in the school, but to also go to Spanish centers that have help available in their own language.” Fellow member Ricardo puts it best when he says to never underachieve yourself and your aspirations.

His advice to students is to “make sure you have more options open for your future so that you have the credentials of choosing whichever universities/colleges and programs you like. Remember, there are so many career options in the world for all of us, make sure you do your homework and choose a career that you will love and is part of your ambitions.”

Ultimately, community building is important on many levels.

¿Qué esperas aprender y que has aprendido al ser parte de la Revista Avenida?

A pesar de que todos compartimos una cultura similar, ser parte de Avenida nos abre un mundo de diversas opiniones, valores, y maneras de interactuar. Una de nuestras editoras, Kamila cree que para poder desarrollar su carrera como periodista aprender a comunicarse con miembros con personalidades diferentes es esencial. “Aprendí a aceptar los puntos de vista de otra gente y he aprendido –y aún estoy aprendiendo- a ser más abierta y expresarme, a no ser tan tímida.”

¿Qué significa para ti construir la comunidad? ¿Por qué crees que es importante?

Avenida es una gran plataforma para que los jóvenes contribuyan a la comunidad. Este grupo muestra un deseo de los jóvenes latinos de involucrarse, de tener una influencia positiva en los otros, y hacer una diferencia en sus escuelas y barrios. Aquí también aspiramos a generar amistades para poder sentirnos más cómodos con todos. Como Verónica, una fotógrafa de Avenida, lo explica “la construcción de la comunidad se trata de crear espacios que sean seguros para todos. El propósito es cubrir las necesidades de la gente. Debemos proveer consuelo, respuestas, curación,

la de Melanie, porque me di cuenta que como vine al ser más pequeño, estuve en ventaja frente a mis amigos que vinieron más tarde y tomaron clases de ESL. Mis amigos hispanoparlantes y yo hemos visto que las expectativas académicas son más bajas para los estudiantes de ESL, ya que es asumido que los estudiantes de ESL no pueden competir académicamente con el resto de la clase.

¿Qué consejo le darías a otros estudiantes latinoamericanos, tanto a quienes son nuevos en el país y quienes no lo son?

Olivia, una escritora en Avenida, le recomienda a los estudiantes que “sean ellos mismos y pidan ayuda, no solo en la escuela sino también en los centros hispanos que dan ayuda en nuestro propio idioma.” Ricardo nos dice que nunca demos menos de lo que podemos dar, o aspiremos a menos. Su consejo para los estudiantes es: “asegúrense que tengan más opciones abiertas para su futuro para poder conseguir las credenciales para elegir cualquier universidad/terciario y programa que quieran. Recuerden que hay muchas opciones de profesiones en el mundo para todos nosotros, asegúrense de hacer su tarea y elegir una carrera que van a amar y que es parte de sus ambiciones.”

¿Qué estereotipos has escuchado sobre los latinoamericanos?

Ya sea en la escuela o en los medios, constantemente escuchamos generalizaciones que muestran una imagen negativa de la cultura latina. Cuando se les preguntó a los miembros del equipo de Avenida sobre estereotipos latinos, muchos respondieron lo mismo.

Ricardo, nuestro editor de diseño dice que ha escuchado “innumerables estereotipos de los latinos… que nos gusta comer tacos, o que somos criminales, vagos e ignorantes.”

Melanie, su compañera editora, nos sugiere que “nunca debemos dejar pasar los chistes estereotípicos. Sé honesto con la gente y asegúrate que entiendan que esos chistes no son graciosos.” Verónica ha tenido experiencias variadas; “como mujer latina mejicana” –nos dice- “un estereotipo que se me atribuye es que soy ‘exótica.’ Esto me resulta muy doloroso e ignorante. Esto resulta una más de las dificultades que una mujer como yo enfrenta.”

Canada is the world’s second largest country in surface and receives 250,000 immigrants each year. Despite its size, the population is not very large and is aging, so the encouragement of immigration helps the economy and its future.

In Canada, the Latin community is among the 5 most visible minorities. Only in Toronto there are approximately 65,000 Latinos (2.6% of the population). The Latino community has had great growth between 2001 and 2006. People often come looking for a better economic situation, better education, and safety.

Diversity is celebrated here, and there are many opportunities for all cultures to express and share their traditions, language, and history. One of the most famous festivals is “Salsa on St. Clair,” the largest Latino festival in Canada. Live music, traditional food, and street dances shown attracted close to 2 million spectators.

A First-Generation Student’s Reflection.

I am the first in my family to attend university in Canada, a “first-generation student.” According to the University of Toronto’s “First in the Family” program, firstgeneration students are those whose parents and older siblings did not attend a post-secondary institution in Canada. As cliché as it sounds, I always hoped, and knew deep down, that I would eventually enter post-secondary education even though the odds were stacked high against me. I had dealt with learning difficulties in high school, was unsure of how I would pay tuition fees, and did not have anyone to help me in the process. My dad, who attended university back in El Salvador, couldn’t help me choose schools and courses since Canadian programs are much more diverse.

If you are a first-generation student, you may face some special challenges. Apart from the major ones such as financial barriers and navigating the bureaucracy when applying, there are potential generation clashes. Parents may not understand why their child is now devoting all their time to studying instead of being available for the family, while the student may find it hard to share his or her journey with them. Furthermore according to firstgeneration student Daniella Lorenz at TalentEgg (a career resource site for young people), students could feel a lack of support and guilt.

My first experience in college almost ended disastrously. I almost did not graduate due to an unsupportive environment, a learning disability diagnosis (hence the lack of support from my professors), and the fact that my abilities and the program requirements were mismatched.

I also experienced isolation and the guilt of being in school. I constantly questioned myself, why was I wasting my time struggling to complete my program when I could be out there working and trying to help my family? This guilt is a common among many first-generation students, especially those from low-income families.

But it’s not all gloom and doom.

According to York University’s vice president of students stated that half of the student population is first-generation (Toronto Star, 2008). There are now firstgeneration mentorship programs in many Ontario colleges that pair incoming first-years with a senior student who has been through the same experience. Seeking out clubs and groups on campus that align with your interests can also make a difference and make academic life more bearable. Finally, every campus has its resources that address many student concerns from essay help to counseling services.

As for me, I was fortunate to come across a bridging program that allowed me to get into

university. This time things were more bearable as I was involved with several student groups and mentorship programs that made the transition in first year easier.

As I now begin second year at the University of Toronto, I certainly look forward to eventually becoming a mentor myself and passing on what I’ve learned the past few years.

My advice to those about to enter post-secondary education: • Never be afraid to seek out help or resources on campus, your tuition goes toward this.

• Sign up for a mentorship program, whether for first-generation students or one that relates to your program. Your mentor can be an invaluable source of information.

• Maintain ties with your family and friends. Even if they cannot always relate with what you are doing, they are still your primary source of support when you need them.

Most importantly though, make the best of your post-secondary experience. It may not be an easy journey but these will be among the best years of your life.

Soy la primera de mi familia en acudir a la universidad en Canadá, una “estudiante de primera generación.” Según el programa “Primero en la Familia” de la Universidad de Toronto, los estudiantes de primera generación son aquellos cuyos padres y hermanos mayores no asistieron a la Universidad en Canadá. Aunque parezca un cliché, yo siempre creí profundamente que entraría a un programa de educación superior a pesar de altas probabilidades en mi contra.

Había lidiado con dificultades de aprendizaje en el bachillerato, no sabía cómo pagaría los gastos ni tenía quién me ayude en el proceso. Mi papá, que acudió a la universidad en El Salvador, no pudo ayudarme a elegir escuelas y cursos ya que los programas aquí son más diversos.

Si tú eres un estudiante de primera generación, puede ser que tengas desafíos especiales. Además de los mayores, como barreras financieras y la burocracia al aplicar, existen potenciales conflictos generacionales. Puede ser que los padres no entiendan por qué su hijo/a dedica todo su tiempo a estudiar en vez de compartir tiempo con la familia, mientras que él/ ella puede encontrar difícil compartir el recorrido con su familia.

Además, según Daniella Lorenz, estudiante de primera generación en TalentEgg (un sitio de recursos profesionales para jóvenes), pueden sentir una falta de apoyo y culpa.

Mi primera experiencia en la universidad casi terminó desastrosamente. Casi no llegué a graduarme gracias a un ambiente de poco apoyo, un diagnóstico de discapacidad en el aprendizaje (de ahí la falta de apoyo de mis profesores), y las discrepancias entre mis habilidades y los requisitos del programa. También sentí soledad y culpa de estar en la escuela. Constantemente me pregunté por qué estaba perdiendo el tiempo tratando de completar mi programa cuando podía estar trabajando y tratando de ayudar a mi familia. Esta culpa es común entre muchos estudiantes de primera generación, especialmente los de familias de bajos ingresos.

Pero no todo es pesimismo y fatalidad. Según el vice-presidente de estudiantes de la Universidad de York la mitad de la población estudiantil es de primera generación (Toronto Star, 2008). Existen programas de tutoría que juntan estudiantes de primer año con un estudiante de último año que ha pasado por la misma experiencia.

Asimismo, clubes y grupos en el campus que se ajustan a tus intereses pueden hacer tu vida académica más llevadera. Finalmente, cada campus dispone de recursos que abarcan las preocupaciones de muchos estudiantes, desde ayudar en un ensayo hasta servicios de terapia.

En cuanto a mí, tuve la suerte de encontrar un programa de transición que me permitió entrar a

la universidad. Esta vez las cosas fueron mejores ya que estaba involucrada con varios grupos estudiantiles y programas de tutoría que hicieron la transición del primer año más fácil. Al estar comenzando el segundo año en la Universidad de Toronto, espero eventualmente convertirme en tutora y transmitir lo que he aprendido en los últimos años.

Mi consejo para quienes van a entrar a un programa de educación superior: • Nunca temas buscar ayuda o recursos en el campus, parte de tu matricula está destinada para eso.

• Inscríbete en un programa de tutoría, ya sea para estudiantes de primera generación o uno relacionado con tu programa. Tu tutor puede ser una valiosa fuente de información.

• Mantén lazos con tu familia y amigos. Aun si ellos no siempre pueden relacionarse con lo que estás haciendo, siguen siendo la principal fuente de apoyo cuando los necesites.

Lo más importante, haz lo mejor de tu experiencia post-secundaria. Puede que no sea un viaje fácil, pero estos años están entre los mejores de tu vida.

Skilled workers are professional workers who are evaluated based on their knowledge, education, work experience and abilities. To apply, a person must have a job in Canada, have a stable job in their country in one of the work areas sought by the Canadian Government, or be a student in Canada. Once the application is accepted, the applicant will be analyzed based on their education, ability to speak English or French, work experience, ability to adapt to new change, and current job status (Citizenship and Immigration Canada, 2012).

Sponsorships may be granted for spouses, parents, grandparents, or children living abroad. The sponsor must demonstrate that s/he can financially support themselves and the person s/he wants to sponsor for three to ten years depending on the relationship. This implies that the entering family cannot ask for financial assistance of any kind from the government after immigrating. The spouse and children who have been claimed then undergo medical and criminal background checks (Stoffman, 2002).

Refugees can enter under three classes based on the decision by a Canadian officer at their local embassy. The Convention Refugee Abroad Class includes people outside their country of origin who cannot return because of a ‘’well founded’’ fear of persecution or other specific reasons. The Country of Asylum Class includes applicants who have been seriously affected by war, military conflict or any kind of violation of human rights. Finally, the Source Country Class includes those who are in a country where they have been affected armed conflict and fear persecution, who can also apply for residency through the Humanitarian and Compassionate (H&C) grounds. Refugees in Canada can work while getting free legal assistance, and after three years can apply for a citizenship (Mrs. Carola Cuadra, Personal Interview, April 2012).

This is not something new for Canadian citizens because Canadian history is made up of stories of immigration of people from different parts of the world. In addition, the economy and the population in this country have and will be sustained thanks to the hundreds of immigrants who have immigrated before, and those who continue to arrive in Canada.

Canada is one of the most multicultural countries in the world. Its immigration and refugee procedures greatly influenced the mosaic development of the past two centuries. There are many ways to immigrate to Canada, which vary in length and process. These include sponsorship, the point system or skilled workers programs, Canadian experience class, and as a self-employed person (McDonald, et al., 2010). Some of these ways are not commonly known; therefore, I’d like to tell you a bit more about the policies of the Canadian immigration and refugee system.

After a quick welcome, and handing out recipes, all hands are on deck. Sabor Latino’s objective is to connect our Hispanic community in the GTA through food.

In this unique community kitchen program cooking helps build a great team and fosters community involvement. The program also provides fantastic opportunities to learn new things, such as cooking techniques, food safety and healthy eating. “The basic principle of our organization is that healthy eating is a human right.” -says the head chef. The program has been run by food and community development worker Bernardo Silva at The Stop Community Food Center.

Silva’s passion is creating a cultural environment through the art of cooking. “There is immense cultural wealth in our people’s blood, and this is expressed on the table when we prepare a dish from our region or when we in-

vite someone to dinner at our house. These dishes were cooked by our grandmothers and our mothers in our home country and are now being rescued in Sabor Latino, hence each session becomes a celebration of our people, to honour the ancestors and traditions,” Silva explains.

While Latin American music plays in the background everyone has a part in preparing the main course, soups or salads, dessert and beverages. When the meal is ready everyone sits down to enjoy it, sometimes enjoying the talents or teachings of guest speakers. All throughout the event smiling faces and positive energy are in the air. It’s incredible how something as simple as cooking can unite a whole community.

It’s eight o’clock, time to go. After everyone has pitched in to clean up, they say their goodbyes and head out the door. Sabor Latino is a place in the community where everyone is a host, where everyone feels at home, and where everyone wants to keep coming back.

Even though everything was going well, he never stopped thinking about his dream of being in a dressing room for the stars, so he studied acting and began his career as an actor in British Columbia.

After 29 years living in Vancouver he decided to continue his life in Toronto, where he had the chance of working in productions like “The X files”. Nowadays, he writes stories for movies and works on his own production, named “La página del libro de un niño” (“A children’s book page). This production was inspired by his birth country, which allowed him to travel and interview politicians and high-ranking officers in the military for the movie.

Lenno talks about the key of his success: He has always thought that possibilities are endless, that it all depends on you. You have to know yourself to choose the right environment and be your own guide. Do not set limits for yourself, because these are only in your head. And to the people who think art is not a viable career, Lenno says that this is just some people’s fear and lack of bravery to do what they want.

Ever since she can remember, art has been a great passion for Gilda. Through small details such as allowing them to paint their home furniture, and attend music or acting classes, their parents created the foundation for this great lifestyle they live by. Inspired by her parents’ interest in science, Gilda started her career in biochemistry attending university in this field. However, she could not abandon the love, effort, and dedication she had towards theatre and art exhibits. It didn’t take too long for her to realize that she liked art better and that she could turn this into her profession, so she decided to leave university and study acting.

In addition to her Canadian and Chilean influences, Gilda was also able to work in different countries thanks to her ability to speak four languages (French, Spanish, English, and Portuguese). Her murals can be admired on the streets of Toronto, Montreal, Chile, Argentina, Brasil, Colombia and Senegal, in magazines, and in museums. She has participated in festivals including Manifesto, Massive Art, Muro Por la Paz, 2MGraff, Tercer Mundo, and Planet Rock 2010. But perhaps one of her biggest and most recent achievements was being selected to paint one of the pianos in the “Play me, I’m yours” project, for the Panamerican Games of 2015 in Toronto.

She has always been proud of her Latin roots, but only at age 19 on a trip to Chile was able to realize that Spanish was necessary to be more strongly connected to her culture. This helped her find her Latin identity. Gilda says that she is very proud of living in a country like Canada, unlike the way that many Latin American mediums portray it. To live in Canada is to have the ability to be any colour or race in a united community. She explains that the search for our identity is important, because without it we don’t know who we are or which way to go.

We have to look beyond what we see, and acknowledge that more than Latinos, we are human beings and we are all equal.

Gilda reminds us that we don’t have to limit ourselves with geographic definitions, even if it’s not easy, because this is something that separates us. With the example of Gilda and Lenno, I hope you understand the importance of not limiting oneself and following one’s dreams.

Gilda Monreal Gilda, más conocida como “Fiya”, es una mujer chilena con una creatividad espontánea y corazón infinito. Es una artista en general, como dice ella, pues el centro de su vida es el arte. Ha estudiado actuación, y es escritora, pintora, y graffitera. Como si esto fuera poco, también es una de las directoras y creadoras del grupo mundial “Essencia Art collective,” el cual aspira a cambiar la sociedad usando el arte como medio de comunicación.

Desde que tiene memoria, Gilda ha tenido el arte como una gran pasión. A través de pequeños detalles como permitirles pintar partes de los muebles de su casa y asistir a clases de música o actuación, sus padres crearon para ellas la base de este gran estilo de vida que llevan. Impulsada por el interés de sus padres en la ciencia, Fiya empezó su carrera como bioquímica para lo que fue a la universidad. Pero no dejó de un lado el amor, esfuerzo y dedicación hacia al teatro y exposiciones de arte. No le tomó mucho tiempo darse cuenta que el arte era más de su gusto y hasta podría ser su profesión, así que decidió retirarse de la universidad y estudiar actuación.

Además de su influencia canadiense y chilena, Gilda también ha podido trabajar en diferentes países gracias a su manejo de cuatro lenguas (francés, español, ingles y portugués). Sus murales pueden ser admirados en las calles de Toronto, Montreal, Chile, Argentina, Brasil, Colombia y Senegal, en revistas y museos. Ella siempre estuvo orgullosa de sus raíces latinas, pero apenas a la edad de 19 años en un viaje a Chile se dio cuenta que el español era necesario para tener una conexión más grande con su cultura. Esto le ayudó a encontrar su identidad latina. Gilda dice que vivir en un país como Canadá es de gran orgullo, y no necesariamente como muchos medios de comunicación latinos lo transmiten.

Vivir en Canadá es poder ser de cualquier color o raza en una sola comunidad. La búsqueda de identidad es importante, porque sin eso no sabemos quiénes somos y por cual camino iremos.

Hay que lograr ver más allá y reconocer que más que latinos, somos seres humanos y somos todos iguales. No hay que limitarnos con las definiciones geográficas, lo cual no es fácil pero es importante porque es algo que nos separa. Con los ejemplos de Lenno y Gilda, espero que hayan entendido la importancia de no limitarse y seguir tus sueños.

“The campaign “No to Genetically Modified Soy and No to all GM seeds” has started” These are days of protests at the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico. The indigenous organization Ka’Kuxtal Much Meyaj AC, has launched a campaign in defense and rescue of native seeds. The campaign was started because the planting of 30,000 hectares of genetically modified soy in early 2012 in the region, particularly in the state of Campeche.

The arguments in favour of planting GM crops that both the government and agribusinesses present are: crop loss by drought in northern Mexico, the problem of “deficit” of grains, and the conversion of the field in a more successful business. Monsanto, a multinational agricultural company denies that GM seeds are harmful, however countries such as Austria, France, Germany, Hungary and Italy have banned them because of the risks they present to their population. Those who have been directly impacted are people who live and work in rural areas, such as beekeepers.

A big amount of honey from the peninsula has been returned from the European Union, largest buyer of Mexican honey, due because of its contami-

nation by GM pollen. It is impossible to prevent bees from approaching GM crops because of the wide range of pollen and nectar collection; as well as, bees’ attraction to soybean’s flower nectar.

Ka’Kuxtal Much Meyaj AC ha decido a difundir la campaña de “No a los Transgénicos para defender las semillas nativas, la salud, la tierra, y defender la Vida”. Su campaña menciona que el daño es para todos porque todos comen lo que ahí se siembra. La campaña nos cuenta que los efectos negativos de los cultivos transgénicos también se verán en la salud, el medio ambiente, el trabajo, y la economía.

The Quebec Student Strikes

Post secondary students in Quebec shocked many across the country, and even the world, when they decided to call for a general unlimited strike this year to oppose the plan of the Charest government to increase university tuition.

Contrary to public belief, this is only one more student strike in a province with a long history of political student action.

The first strike recorded in the history of the province took place in 1958, when more than 21,000 students took the streets to protect their right to higher education. Since then, many student strikes have been orchestrated; the most relevant in terms of long term effects being the 1996 and the 2005 strikes.

In 1996, as the government proposed to increase tuition by 30%, 100,000 representing different student associations from CEGEPs (junior colleges) and universities took the streets. They succeeded as tuition froze and remained that way for eleven years. However, the government implemented other restrictive measures, including the increase of tuition fees for non-Quebec residents and a cut of $700 million.

The 2005 strike, although less successful in achieving its objectives, was the largest and most popular student strike in the history of Quebec to date. More than 200,000 students marched to prevent bursary money to be converted into loan money. This strike was also partly successful.

It’s no wonder then that with such a long history of student strikes Quebec students took to the streets once more this year as the government again planned to increase tuition.

March 22nd marked a turning point for the student movement, as more than 230,000 students took to the streets one more time, breaking the record and becoming the largest strike in the province’s history. At the same time, this demonstration gained the international support of seasoned student movements around the world, like the National 22 • Avenida Magazine

Student Association in Chile, which had simultaneous demonstrations in solidarity and support of the Quebec student movement.

After months of almost daily marches, the movement has come to a halt as Pauline Marois, a supporter of the movement, won the elections on September 4th. Less than 24 hours after being elected, Marois announced she did not plan to follow her predecessor and intended instead to “index any tuition increases to the rate of inflation, rather than the Liberals’ plan to increase tuition by $254 per year over seven years.”

A truce was therefore reached and classes resumed in CEGEPs and universities alike. However, there is dissent between the student associations as CLASSE, the most radical of the three main associations, was not satisfied and continued to push for the complete elimination of tuition.

But after all is said and done, the student strike in Quebec this year left a legacy, since it involves much more than tuition rates and will have a long-lasting impact in Quebec’s politics and society. If nothing else, the strike created what has been called an “awakening of the left,” a “generation of politically-engaged Quebecers.” This can be proved by examining the provincial elections of September 4th. Around 75% of Quebecers voted, which is almost 20% more than in the province’s last elections.

Undoubtedly, young voters are making a difference in their province. Although the strike has ended - for the moment at least - Quebecers and Canadian youth in general are left with a legacy of political involvement and solidarity. The events of this so called ‘Maple Summer’ created a new generation of politically and socially aware individuals - both pro and against the strike - and renewed the interest in politics and the future of the country in a generation which many had written off as uninterested, ignorant and apathetic.

Estudiantes de secundaria en Quebec conmocionaron a muchos en el país e incluso en el mundo, cuando decidieron manifestarse en una huelga este año para oponerse al plan del gobierno de Charest de incrementar el costo de las matrículas en las universidades. Esta es solamente una de tantas huelgas que se han producido en esta provincia en la historia de acción política estudiantil. La primera huelga recordada en la historia de la provincia fue en 1958, cuando más de 21,000 estudiantes tomaron las calles para proteger el derecho de tener educación superior. Desde entonces, muchas huelgas de estudiantes han sido manifestadas. De esta lista larga, las huelgas más recordadas en términos de duración son las de 1996 y las del 2005.

En 1996, cuando el gobierno propuso incrementar la matricula un 30%, unos 100,000 estudiantes de diferentes CEGEP (institutos) y universidades tomaron las calles. Ellos ganaron la congelación de las matriculas y así se mantuvo por once años. Sin embargo, otras medidas fueron implementadas por el gobierno, incluyendo el incremento de matriculas a gente afuera de Quebec, y un recorte de $700 millones.

La huelga del 2005, aunque fue menos exitosa en lograr sus objetivos, fue la huelga más grande y más famosa de estudiantes en la historia de Quebec. Más de 200,000 estudiantes marcharon para evitar que el dinero de las becas sea convertido en préstamos. Esta huelga también fue exitosa.

Después de muchas marchas diarias durante varios meses, el movimiento ha llegado a un alto cuando Pauline Marois, una partidaria del movimiento, ganó las elecciones el 4 de Septiembre. La huelga creó lo que ha sido llamado el “despertamiento de la izquierda,” “una generación en Quebec involucrada en la política”. Difficult Decision A guide to options after graduating High School he first thing that may come to mind when you graduate from high school is “What am I going do now?”

You may have an idea of what you may want to do, but it is very important to carefully review and analyze all the options. In Canada there is a huge range of opportunities available after high school, and choosing the one that suits your needs can be a challenge. Overall, whichever path you choose should be the one that feels right for you based on your interests, needs, and goals.

A popular path is getting a job right after high school or continuing the one you\z had. Most people choose this option when they need time to sort things out, save up for school, or because they want to commit to that specific job. This path can be great if your job offers opportunities for promotions and salary advancement, or if you need some extra money for a post-secondary education. However, if your job does not offer advancement and you are simply doing it to get quick cash, then you may want to rethink what to do because you may later regret and feel you’ve fallen back some years. Staying in a job right after high school can make you re-think your priorities and your future long-term needs.

Another path, which has been increasingly popular recently, is trade schools or specialty schools. According to Trade Career Colleges, a trade school is an institution that teaches students skills specific to a particular job, for example welding, air traffic control, landscaping, or personal training. This is different from college, where they offer a well-rounded course study designed to cover a variety of subjects. According to Canadian Living the employment rate for skilled works such as for chefs, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, and industrial mechanics has been increasingly growing. Trade schools can be useful for recent graduates who want to acquire a particular set of skills which they will use their whole life. Depending on the trade, degree and certification programs can be as short as two weeks or as long as two years, which is 24 • Avenida Magazine

why this may be a good choice if you want a well paid job without a committing to a higher level of education. Even though trades can be very mentally stimulating, they are also known to be very hands-on, so if you do not like physically demanding jobs, then trades may not be the path for you.

The final path that you could consider is post secondary school, which mainly consists of college and university. Post secondary schools may be a good path for you if you like learning in a traditional classroom, studying for exams, and having more academic-oriented work. For the most part, post-secondary school can be a unique opportunity to spend your time learning about your interests, experiencing new things, and meeting new people.

A post secondary degree can also open many doors for you, and according to a Pew Research survey more than 74% of college graduates say that their education was “very useful in helping them grow intellectually.” If you are thinking of applying to a college or university, you should note that many of them require a minimum high school average between 65% and 85% -depending on the institution- in order to get in. Even though college and university may sound like great options they are not for everyone. If you struggled in the academic aspects of high school, then you may also find the same challenges in post-secondary school. This should not deter you from applying; but you should be prepared for possible difficult challenges up ahead. Take your time to consider your current circumstances, your goals, and interests before applying to any post-secondary program.

The amount of options after high school is almost unlimited; there is something to suit everyone’s needs. Ultimately, no matter ‘what you want to be when you grow up,’ remember there are always options and with the right decisions, you can achieve anything you want in life.

En Canadá hay un amplio rango de oportunidades disponibles después de la escuela secundaria, y elegir la que te sienta a ti puede ser un desafío. El camino que elijas debe ser el cual te haga sentir bien según tus intereses, necesidades, y objetivos.

Un camino popular es conseguir un trabajo apenas terminas la escuela o continuar uno que ya tenías. La mayoría de la gente elige esta opción cuando necesitan tiempo para pensar lo que quieren, ahorrar para los estudios, o porque quieren comprometerse con ese trabajo. Este camino puede ser bueno si tu trabajo ofrece oportunidades de ascensos y aumentos, o si necesitas ahorrar un poco para una educación terciaria. A guide to Writing a Résumé No Employer Can Turn Down A really great résumé is priceless. On second thought, it does have a price and that price is a lifetime at your dream job. At the end of the day what makes a résumé stand out is time and effort, employers can tell if you put time into it. No matter what position you are applying for, a polished résumé shows your prospective employer that you have work ethic and forethought. So start now, whether or not you are currently looking for work.

Include school, major, and (expected) graduation date

Before you start, take the time to write down the qualities and characteristics the employer is looking for, list your own strongest qualities and see where they overlap. Funding Sports For Youth Looking at the lack of support for our young athletes

Due to this, many competitive youth clubs are forced to rely on a few sponsors and mostly on their parents.

Hockey would be a prime example of this. According to a Hockey News article, more than 30 000 children will not be playing hockey come 2016 due to the high costs. Unlike Canadian junior teams, many teams in Europe have extensive corporate sponsoring. In some towns, hockey fees can be as low as $250 per season compared to thousands of dollars per season in most Canadian teams (CBS Sports). If Canadian minor hockey teams could get this amount of support from Corporate Canada, then hockey enrollment would soar across the country. However, for this to happen we need sustainable sponsorships, which can be accomplished with proper determination.

Another increasing problem with sports among youth is the lack of participation from kids in lower income families. According to a Statistics Canada report, about 68 percent of children from high income families play sports as opposed to 44 percent from low-income ones. Several factors can contribute to this, but the main reason for this is the rising costs of sports across the country. According to CBS, In B.C, the West Vancouver Minor Hockey Association partners with an organization called Athletics for Kids, which helped lowerincome families get their kids to participate in sports. While this can be a very effective method for supporting kids, it is not used everywhere in Canada. Until organizations like this one appear in other major Canadian cities,

the situation will not get better.

However, the possibility of organizations like Athletics for Kids appearing in other places in Canada is not very unlikely, as the greatest lack of participation in youth comes from large metropolitan areas, where low-income families are more likely to be found. A recent report in The Daily stated that, “Rates of participation in 2005 among children aged 5 to 14 were highest in Atlantic Canada (61%) and lowest in British Columbia (44%) and Quebec (48%).” At the municipal level, rates were the lowest in Canada’s three largest cities, which were Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. In each of these three cities, sports participation was found to be less than half at 47 percent, much lower than the average 58 percent in suburban areas. This means that in order to help improve these rates, corporate sponsors and organizations like Athletics for Kids should concentrate their effort on major populated areas. If this were to occur, then it would be very possible to improve the current lack of sports participation in youth.

Ultimately, the necessity for more funding in sports for youth is rising.

Every young child deserves the right to play in any sport they like, but right now that is not the case in Canada.

In order for this to become a reality, there should be more support from the government, corporate organizations, and non-profit organizations. If more people could work together to make Canada a better place for children, we would see countless benefits such as a healthy and active population in the close future.

you have ever tried to enroll in a hockey team, soccer team, or even a swim team, the first thing you usually notice is the price. For the last few years, the cost of joining a junior sports team in Canada has been rising steadily due to many factors. In countries such as the U.S, athletes can become eligible for financial aid if they want to join a sports team. Many Olympic athletes who compete for the U.S are also able to receive large sums of money if they manage to win a medal. However, this is not the case for Canada, where athletes often receive little to no financial aid, and no money is awarded to any Olympic athlete who wins a medal.

This is often viewed quite negatively, since it can be a contributing factor to the decrease of youth participating in sports. Not every athlete in the world is born with greatness, but rather they work towards greatness, which is why organizations in Canada should create funding programs to form great athletes who start training when they’re young.

La creatividad tiene muchas formas de manifestarse en una persona. El arte mismo incluye un gran proceso creativo, en el cual no solo el resultado final es importante, sino también el procedimiento imaginativo.

However, we all know that imagination is not exclusive to art.

We can be creative businessmen, psychologists or athletes. With that said, what is so special about art?

That same teacher told me an inspiring story: “A few years back in time, I was involved in a community project meant to keep youth out of gangs. Those adolescents were considered to be lost causes by many, but we (as artists and psychologists) had another thing in mind: we planned an art program. Each person could choose between painting or clay modeling. At first we did not know what to expect, there was a chance that they may see art as a dumb thing to do, but fortunately there was no problem at all. Each one of them got deeply involved. There was no cursing, no fighting, no hatred, only calm and work. By the time the program finished, we realized how essential it was for them to communicate their feelings and thoughts. They wanted to be noticed, to be heard, to be known.”

Then, my teacher went on to tell us that the project continued as we spoke, for the next generation of youth. The most surprising thing she said was that those participants found their way to fit into the rest of society thanks to art.

El mismo profesor también contó una historia muy interesante: “Hace algunos, estaba involucrado en un proyecto comunitario dedicado a mantener a jóvenes fuera de las pandillas. A estos jóvenes muchos los consideraban casos perdidos. Nosotros (como artistas y psicólogos) teníamos la idea de planear un programa artístico para ellos. Cada uno de los chicos se dedicó profundamente. No hubo más peleas, discusiones ni amenazas, solo tranquilidad y el arte. Cuando terminó el programa, nos dimos cuenta que era importante para ellos poder comunicar sus sentimientos y pensamientos usando el arte. Querían que los escuchen y querían ser entendidos.”

Cuando le pregunté a mi profesor cómo siguió la historia me respondió que el proyecto continua con cada nueva generación. Lo más sorprendente fue saber que esos jóvenes encontraron una manera de ser parte de la comunidad gracias al arte. La mayoría no se volvió artista, pero lograron encontrarse a sí mismos a través del arte. Aprendieron a tener tolerancia, paciencia y sensibilidad.

One year, my class had a new classmate who didn’t speak any English at all. Not many people spoke to her, and I believe this made her feel very out of place. She would often start crying because she wanted to leave school to see her mom. This was probably because she didn’t have anyone she could really express her feelings to or have an actual conversation with.

I know it’s difficult to try and communicate with people who don’t speak your language. I’m part Chilean and so part of my family lives in Chile. My mom and I would often talk to them over the computer, and since I didn’t speak very much Spanish half of the time I wouldn’t know what they where saying, or what they where laughing at. I always felt a little excluded and would constantly ask my mom what they where saying.

However, we still tried to communicate with each other. For example, my cousins and I would draw pictures and write the names of the object in our first language (for example I drew a grape and wrote “grape” next to it and they did the same but wrote “uva”).



However, many immigrants don’t have the luck that I do with my cousin. As a result, isolation might lead to severe depression and low self esteem. You might feel that you are not worth much or that nobody likes you. It is something that can only be prevented by creating a strong supportive community. So it would be a good idea to do so as young Latin newcomers.

I think the best thing people can do to prevent others from feeling isolated is try their best to find enthusiastic and creative ways to communicate with everyone. Body language, art and music are universal languages that can be used to start a conversation with our new classmate.

Si vienes a un país y no hablas su idioma, esto puede ser muy difícil para ti; tu no entiendes a los otros y los otros no te entienden a ti. Esto puede llevar a que la gente inmediatamente te ignore y no se comunique contigo porque creen que será muy difícil.

Un año, mi clase tuvo una nueva compañera que no hablaba nada de Inglés. Mucha gente no le hablaba a ella, lo cual yo creo que la hacia sentir muy triste y aislada. A menudo se ponía a llorar porque quería irse de la escuela para ver a su m a d r e , probablem e n t e porque no tenía nadie con quien expresarse o tener u n a conversación.

Sé que es difícil intentar comunicarse con gente que no habla tu idioma. Yo soy en parte Chilena, por lo que una parte de mi familia vive en Chile. Mi mamá y yo a menudo hablamos con ellos por la computadora, y como yo no hablo mucho español la mitad del tiempo no sé qué están diciendo o de qué se ríen. Siempre me sentí un poco excluida y le preguntaba a mi mamá constantemente qué estaban diciendo. Sin embargo de todas maneras nos intentábamos comunicar. Por ejemplo, mis primos y yo dibujábamos y escribíamos el nombre de algún objeto en nuestro idioma (por ejemplo, yo dibujé uvas y al lado escribí “grape” y ellos hicieron lo mismo escribiendo “uva”).

El problema es que muchos inmigrantes no tienen la suerte que yo tuve con mis primos. La soledad puede llevar a una depresión severa, y a tener baja autoestima. Te puedes sentir que no vales mucho o que nadie te quiere. Es algo que solo puede ser prevenido creando una comunidad fuerte de apoyo. Así que es una buena idea crearla, siendo jóvenes latinos recién llegados a Canadá.

Creo que lo mejor que puede hacer la gente para prevenir que otros se sientan aislados o solos es buscar maneras entusiastas y creativas de comunicarse con otros. El lenguaje corporal, el arte y la música son lenguajes universales que pueden ser usados para comenzar una conversación con el compañero nuevo.

Book Review: In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio Author: Phillipe Bourgois

Summary:The author, an anthropologist, moves to East Harlem in the late 1980s to study and document social issues in the inner city. As he manages to gain the trust of several Puerto Rican drug dealers, he decides to record in the next five years their lives, stories, memories, and hopes. He becomes a witness to the effects of drug dealing and addiction, poverty and racism.

Social/Historical context: Those who struggle with poverty and live in public housing projects are often believed to having caused their own misfortune and stereotyped as “welfare bums,” “system scammers.” Racism is also prevalent, as most of the residents living in the projects are Latin or African American and are stereotyped to be illegal immigrants or potential criminals.

Resumen: El autor, un antropólogo, se muda al Este de Harlem al final de los años 80 para estudiar y documentar problemas sociales en la ciudad. Al ganarse la confianza de varios traficantes de drogas de Puerto Rico, decide registrar por cinco años su vida diaria, historias, memorias, y esperanzas. Se hace testigo de los efectos del tráfico de drogas y la adicción, la pobreza y el racismo.

Contexto Social/Histórico: Aquellos que luchan con la pobreza y viven en viviendas del estado a menudo son culpados de haber causado su propia mala fortuna y son estereotipados como “vagos de asistencia social” y de “aprovechadores del sistema.” El racismo también existe, ya que la mayoría de los residentes de las viviendas públicas son Latinos o Afro-Americanos y estereotipados como inmigrantes ilegales o criminales potenciales.

Por otro lado, temía que al no publicarlo estaría contribuyendo al silencio existente de los pueblos marginados. En sus propias palabras: “Me niego a ignorar o minimizar la miseria social de la que fui testigo, porque eso me haría cómplice en la opresión” (p.12).

Por qué lo recomiendo: Creo que muchos de los problemas presentados en el libro son transferibles a Toronto, en especial considerando los recientes crímenes y cortes de servicios. Los cortes afectan a los más vulnerables, lo cual puede causar que muchos jóvenes desempleados recurran a actividades ilegales para sobrevivir. Los medios generalmente pasan por alto estos crímenes a menos que afecten los barrios más afluentes o el centro de la ciudad. Recomiendo encarecidamente este libro ya que parece ser uno de los pocos que no endulza el contenido tabú y hace hincapié en cambios que se necesitan para cortar el ciclo de pobreza y violencia.

My thoughts: I believe the author did a good job providing contextual information considering he was from a different background. He describes the history of the neighbourhood, of drug trade in the United States, and how his informants came to be in their current positions. He does so without censoring the informant’s views or sugar coating the effects of poverty. I also liked that he admits in the Introduction that he struggled on whether he should publish the book.

On the one hand, he feared it would be used to further demonize those living in the housing projects. On the other hand, he feared that by not publishing he would contribute to the ongoing silence of marginalized peoples.

In his own words: “I refuse to ignore or minimize the social misery I witnessed, because that would make me complicitous with oppression” (p. 12).

Why I recommend it: I believe many of the issues presented in this book are transferable to Toronto, especially considering recent crimes and service cuts. Service cuts have hit the vulnerable, which may cause many already unemployed youth to resort to illegal activities to survive. The media often oversees these crimes unless they affect affluent neighborhoods or the downtown core. I highly recommend this book as it appears to be one of the few that does not sugar coat topics that are rarely explored and encourages reforms to stop the poverty and violence cycle.

At the end of the 70s, salsa became very commercialized and lost its appeal with listeners. This was aggravated by the invasion of merengue and disco in the 80s. Towards the mid 80s salsa began a resurrection with musicians like Eddie Santiago who make a more sensual and less chauvinistic version of this music. While it has lost many fans to merengue, bachata, reggaeton, and more modern rhythms, salsa is still celebrated internationally today. Danced in various countries inside and outside Latin America in packed dance classes, it has become an icon identified with our culture.

Ingredientes:

Preparation: Beat 2 egg whites.

Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celsius (400 Fahrenheit). Coat a baking pan with flour. Mix the 2 yolks, 2 tablespoon of cornstarch, sugar to one’s own taste, and a pinch of soda (bicarbonate). Dump all the ingredients into the baking pan and put it in the oven for about ½ an hour.

Despite the cultural differences between our countries, it is fair to say that salsa is a dance that unites us all in Latin America. Salsa comes from a mix of Afro-Caribbean rhythms like Son Montuno, El Mambo, la Bomba and la Plena.

It originated in Cuba and spread through North America where it was mixed with new styles.

In the United States salsa became popular in New York, in a South Bronx neighborhood. As the story goes, a group of young musicians started mixing sounds and rhythms, trying to create a new sound that would be conserved through time. The Puerto Rican Lebron Brothers presented salsa for the first time in New York at the Saint George hotel in Brooklyn. Their music became popular quickly as Latin New Yorkers adopt it as part of their identity. Salsa bars like The Cheetah were full as more musicians started showcasing these rhythms. The first band to produce a salsa record, Fania All Stars, coined the name Salsa. They chose this word as it was often found in the lyrics (just like azúcar and sabor). The musiccreated during the beginning of the 20th century is considered classic salsa or golden salsa. Some of its first musicians were Ray Barretto, Bobby Valentin, Hector Layoe, Willie Colon and Ismael Miranda.
