Lectores, marionetas del escritor Readers... the writer´s puppets eer es una actividad beneficiosa se mire por donde se mire. Es la única acción que nos permite viajar al pasado y/o al futuro a través de la estimulación de la imaginación. Una buena novela, te puede hacer viajar en el tiempo: te lleva y te trae por el sendero marcado por el autor y cuando éste consigue que te dejes llevar, te conviertes en su fiel marioneta y ya no lo puedes dejar. La lectura es un placer, un entretenimiento o un hábito, como lavarse las manos o caminar. Cada persona la vive y la siente de una manera distinta. Unos leen para entretenerse otros para ampliar conocimientos, otros simplemente para evadirse o escapar de la realidad. También existe un gran porcentaje de personas en el mundo que no leen y es muy respetable siempre y cuando sea una elección. “Aprender a leer es lo más importante que me ha pasado en la vida”, dixit

Mario Vargas Llosa, Premio Nobel de Literatura. Cierto, porque realmente la lectura nos hace libres. A lo largo de las décadas, el nivel de analfabetismo a nivel mundial se va reduciendo, pero todavía queda mucho trabajo por hacer para erradicarlo, principalmente entre las mujeres. Ellas ocupan el porcentaje más elevado en ese ranking tan nefasto y, siendo la vida un matriarcado, en nuestra opinión, el día que consigamos eliminarlo, habremos vencido a la pobreza y la desigualdad. Volviendo a los beneficios de la lectura, se ha demostrado científicamente que leer una novela puede aumentar la función cerebral durante días. Según diferentes estudios la lectura, ayuda a prevenir enfermedades como el Alzheimer, a reducir el estrés, a desarrollar la memoria, a ampliar nuestro vocabulario, a mejorar nuestra escritura y nos abre la mente, nos enseña a escuchar mejor y a ser más creativos... entre otras muchas bondades.

A good novel may make your travel in time: it brings you in and takes you out in the author´s path, if you get into it badly, then you will become his loyal puppet. It will be very hard for you to get rid of his strings. Reading is a pleasure, an entertainment, or a habit like washing your hands or walking. Each person has his own way to live it or feel it. Some people read for entertainment, others just to enhance their knowledge, and some others simply to avert or escape from reality. There is a percentage of people who are not inclined to read, as long as it is a personal decision, we must respect such a decision. “Learning how to read is the most important thing that has ever happened to me”. Mario Vargas Llosa says (Literature Nobel Prize). It is a fact the reading makes us free. For several decades, the worldwide level of literacy has been declining, but still there is so much work left to do to eradicate this social problem, especially among women. Illiterate women represent a high percentage in this detrimental worldwide ranking. Life is a matriarchy, so we believe that we will overcome poverty and inequality the day we have defeated illiteracy once and for all. Going back to the benefits of reading, scientific researchers have demonstrated that reading a novel could improve the brain activity for several days. According to other studies, reading helps prevent some diseases such as Alzheimer, reduce stress, develop memory capabilities, enhance our vocabulary, improve our writing, open up our minds, teach us to listen carefully, be more creative... among other benefits.

Las gestas restauradoras que terminaron con una victoria de los nacionales dominicanos, fruto de la retirada de las tropas españolas, una vez que las Cortes ordenaran su repliegue, debido a que los costes de la guerra eran muy altos y no necesitaban el territorio, marcó el arranque de la mejora de las formas de comunicación en República Dominicana, sobre todo con el impulso del ferrocarril. The restoration period finished with the victory of Dominicans after the Spaniard troops withdrawal. The Spaniard courts ordered the deployment of their troops due to the high costs of maintaining them in war. They came to the conclusion that there was no need to carry on fighting over the Dominican territory. This event set the starting point for the improvement of communication channels in Dominican Republic. Over all of them, the rail was taking its great momentum in the history of the island. La construcción de este segundo planteamiento se inició a través de la casa bancaria Westerdorp de Holanda que en 1892, entregó sus intereses y los de su representante a la Santo Domingo Improvement Company de New York.

Simultaneously, in 1865, The train in the USA and Europe were tracing thousands of kilometers of railway across the countries to unify industrial zones with ports and with some other center of raw material production. The rail was considered one of the main elements of economic development by the end of the 19th century. Europeans rail firms boosted 2 projects in the country. The first one was Sánchez-La Vega rail and its branches run 130 kilometers around the area. It was managed by a Scottish private company. The second was the 68-kilometer long rail that connects Puerto Plata with Santiago de los Caballeros. This one, on the other hand, was a state company called “Central Dominican Railway”. The construction of the second one was funded by the Westerdorp of Netherlands banking house in 1892. This company handed out its percentage of ownership to Santo Domingo Improvement Company of New York.

historia history El 16 de agosto de 1897, el presidente Ulises Heureaux, más conocido como Lilis, inauguró la línea de Puerto Plata a Santiago. En 1906 siendo presidente Ramón Cáceres, se firmó el contrato de la extensión del Ferrocarril Central Dominicano hasta Moca, siendo dirigida la obra por Horacio Vásquez, y fue puesto en funcionamiento el 24 de octubre del 1909. Heureaux, preveía la continuación de esta vía hasta Santo Domingo, pasando por Moca, La Vega, Cotuí, Yamasá y otras poblaciones; de modo que las costas Norte y Sur quedaban unidas por el camino de hierro. La ruta Samaná-Santiago, que paradigmáticamente nunca comenzó en Samaná y nunca terminó en Santiago, se comenzó a construir por gestiones del presidente Ulises Heureaux, por el inversionista escocés Mr. Baird, inaugurándose el 16 de agosto de 1887. En su afán por modernizar el transporte ferroviario, Heureaux construyó una vía desde La Jina a San Francisco de Macorís en 1893, un tramo que comprendía unos 13 kilómetros. En 1909 se construyeron los de Santiago-Moca y Cabulla-Salcedo. En el gobierno del presidente Ramón Arturo Cáceres Vásquez, más conocido como Mon Cáceres se inauguró el tramo de la vía central Sánchez-La Vega a la común de Juana Méndez (Salcedo) en 1909, y luego en 1913 se comenzaron los trabajos de Salcedo a Moca, y se inauguró en Moca, la vía del ferrocarril el 27 de febrero de 1918.

On August 16th, 1897, President Ulises Heureaux known as Lilis, launched the railway from Puerto Plata to Santiago. In 1906, Ramos Cáceres took power and during his presidential period, they signed off the railway extension to Moca city. The man in charge of the project was Horacio Vásquez and he made it started its operation on October 24th, 1909. Heureaux foresaw more railway projects including one to Santo Domingo passing by many towns along the way such as Moca, La Vega, Cotuí, Yamasá among others. They aimed at connecting the northern with the southern coast by railways. The route Samaná-Santiago was a paradigm. It did not start in Samaná and never ended in Santiago. Its construction started under the President Ulises Heureaux period with some financial aid from the Scottish man Mr. Baird. They launched it on August 16th, 1887. In his determination to modernize the rail transport system, Heureaux built a road from La Jina to San Francisco de Macoris in 1893. One section was around 13 kilometers long. In 1909, other rail connections were built from Santiago to Moca and Cabulla to Salcedo. When Ramón Arturo Cáceres Vásquez was still in power, he was known as Mon Cáceres. He launched one section of the central rail system from Sánchez to La Vega and then connect it with Juana Méndez (Salcedo) in 1909. In 1913, they started working on the Salcedo-Moca connection, then they launched the railway in Moca on February 27th, 1918.

historia history Un devenir de progreso e inversiones desde el Gobierno central que también tuvieron su visibilidad en la capital. En Santo Domingo, funcionaba el antiguo tranvía de tracción animal, tranvía urbano. Su recorrido comenzaba en el Fuerte de la Concepción, pasaba por la calle del Conde, seguía por la Isabel la Católica, bajando al muelle por la Puerta de San Diego. Progresivamente se extendió hasta el Balneario de Guibia. El transporte que era tirado por mulos y caballos funcionó hasta 1904. En la provincia del noroeste de Montecristi, había un tranvía que unía la población con la playa, Juan de Bolaños, donde existía un pueblo con sus calles, tiendas y billares, lo que suponía una extensión de tres kilómetros. Las familias Jimenez Rodríguez y Rivas Petit fueron las que contribuyeron para la realización del primer ferrocarril, el primer acueducto y las primeras líneas telefónicas. Así pues, había más de 600 kilómetros de vías fijas de locomotoras; 12 kilómetros de vías fijas por tracción animal y 44 kilómetros de vías móviles para un total de 675 kilómetros de vías férreas en República Dominicana. En 1907, el gobierno de Ramón Cáceres contrató con el ingeniero cubano Pedro Marín, la construcción del ferrocarril La Romana-San Pedro de Macorís. Una obra que se concibió para llegar hasta la capital pero que nunca se realizó. En los años 50 hubo un desmantelamiento de la vía férrea por parte del gobierno de Trujillo para utilizarla en los ingenios de caña. El Ferrocarril de la Central Romana fue establecido en 1911 en los campos de caña de azúcar. La longitud total de esta línea es de 757 kilómetros. Para estos fines dispone en la actualidad de una moderna red ferroviaria que lleva la totalidad. Actualmente, Central Romana dispone de 17 locomotoras de 20 toneladas y 900 vagones, que movilizan aproximadamente cuatro millones de toneladas de caña durante los 225 días que, en promedio, dura una zafra.

The path of progress and investments promoted by the central government had a big and noticeable impact in the capital. In Santo Domingo, there was an old animal drawn tram called the urban tram. It would run from its starting point at the Concepción Fort, then through El Conde street, down to Isabel La Católica, reaching down the pier through La Puerta de San Diego. Gradually, it got extended to the Guibia Beach. The main transport was dragged by mules and horses, it stayed in operation until 1904. Up northeast of Montecristi, there was a tram that linked a little town with a beach called Juan de Bolaños. It was a picturesque town with narrowed streets, convenient stores located in an extension of 3 kilometers. The Jimenez Rodriguez´s and the Rivas Petit´s were the main two families who contributed to build the first rail, the first aqueduct, and the first telephone landline. Hence, there were more than 600 kilometers of fixed locomotive tracks: 12 kilometers of fixed tracks for animal drawn transport, 44 kilometers of mobile tracks to sum up a total of 675 railways around Dominican Republic In 1907, President Ramón Cáceres hired a Cuban engineer named Pedro Marín to build the rail from La Romana to San Pedro de Macorís. A very wellconceived work for people to be able to reach the capital that never got finalized. During the 50´s, there was railway dismantling by the Trujillo government to use the material to boost the sugar cane production. The Central Romana rail was established in 1911 over some sugar cane fields. Its total length was 757 kilometers. For this purpose, it has a modern rail network which is currently managed by the Romana Central. It holds 17 locomotive of 20 tons each, and 900 wagons that can carry 4 million tons of sugar cane for around 225 days, which is how much a sugar harvest can produce in one season.

Con sus paisajes; con sus costas y sus montañas, la provincia de Pedernales, jalona una huella de sí misma, que la destaca, la erige y la encumbra hacia la desmesura de lo infinito. La vegetación espinosa de guasábaras y otros cactus, la propia de áreas semidesérticas y desérticas, cubre solamente los tramos costeros, mientras que, tierra adentro, emergen prolijos, la conformación de bosques y montes. La Laguna de Oviedo, es la reserva natural acuática de Pedernales. Ubicada en el Parque Nacional Jaragua se considera una de las áreas protegidas más importantes del Caribe. Manglares y una extensa variedad de fauna proliferan en sus aguas saladas. En un paso natural hacia Bahía de Las Águilas, una de las mejores playas del mundo, se constituye con colores ocres y cobrizos, a unos 8 km en la costa suroeste, Cabo Rojo, el hogar de los arrecifes mejor resguardados del área del Caribe. Su nombre deriva de la bauxita que abunda en las áreas aledañas y cuya explotación mantuvo du-

The Oviedo Lagoon is the water reserve of Pedernales. It is located in the Jaragua National Park and considered one of the protected areas in the Caribbean. Mangroves and an extent variety of fauna proliferate in its deep salty waters. Cabo Rojo is a natural path towards Bahía de las Águilas. Considered one of the best beaches in the world. It brings out some ochres and copper brown colors around 8km southwest coast. It is home for the most guarded coral reef in the Caribbean. Its name comes from the bauxite mineral which is easy to find in the surrounding

Al compás que marcan las transiciones del bosque seco y latifoliado, se halla uno los secretos mejor guardados de la provincia; Hoyo del Pelempito. Conocido como el gran cañón del Caribe está situado en el corazón del Parque Nacional Sierra de Bahoruco es la mayor depresión geológica del país. Su fondo está localizado a 348 metros sobre el nivel mar mientras que los macizos que lo rodean alcanzan hasta 1,186 m. Una enorme depresión formada por la convergencia de dos grandes fenómenos regionales. Por una parte, un extenso sistema de fallas que atraviesa el eje de la Sierra de bahoruco. Por otra, un amplio proceso de erosión como consecuencia de la disolución de las rocas calizas eocénicas y que tienden a formar sumideros naturales, a través de los cuales se infiltran aguas que corren por los pequeños cauces en los períodos lluviosos. Pelempito sólo es accesible a pie a través de dos caminos de varios kilómetros, aunque las vistas panorámicas desde diversos lugares son espectaculares. Por su vertiente noroeste se accede desde El Limonal, mientras que al lado sureste se accede por la Sabana de la Primera Yerba y El Tunal. Con un microclima excepcional, registra temperaturas desde 25 hasta 0 grados centígrados. Una justificación de su flora sumamente rica donde existen unas 1434 especies de plantas, de las cuales más de 430 son endémicas.

Around the dry and broadleaf forest, you may encounter the best kept secret of Hoyo del Pelempito Providence. Known as the Great Caribbean Canyon, it is located in the heart of Sierra de Bahoruco National Park. It is the major ecological depression of the country. Its deepest point is 348 meters down sea level, on the other hand its solid walls reach up to 1,186 meters height. A big hollow formed due to the convergence of two big regional phenomena. In one hand, an extensive geologic fault that goes through the axis of the Sierra de Bahoruco. And on the other hand, a wide erosive process occurs as a result of the dissolution of Eocene limestone rocks. This leads to the formation of natural sinks through which fresh water run towards little riverbeds during the rainy season. Pelempito can only be reached by foot. A long walk for many kilometers and enjoying panoramic scenic from different points is absolutely amazing. You may also access its northeast side from a slope called El Limonal. If you wanted to access its southeast side, you may do so via La Sabana de la Primera Yerba and El Tunal. With an exceptional micro climate, temperatures range from 0 to 25 degrees Celsius. This creates a perfect ecosystem where about 1434 plants live, more than 430 of them are endemic species.

Con una impertérrita voluntad y con el mismo sentido de la aventura que los primeros que se adentraron en las pirámides de Egipto, Kathleen Martínez busca la tumba de Cleopatra VII, en esa perseverancia a prueba de maldiciones, en la que radica su quintaesencia.

dominicanos en el mundo dominicans in the world Hace algo más de una década, rompió el corsé familiar, el que envuelve a una mujer casada y con hijos, para descubrir que su misión en la vida sería conocer, proteger y difundir el patrimonio cultural del antiguo Egipto, en Taposiris Magna, al oeste de Alejandría, donde ha descubierto casi todos los cimientos de sus estructuras y ha encontrado, cincuenta y dos habitaciones, ocho cámaras subterráneas y un complejo de túneles a 35 metros de profundidad. Indicios sólidos que demuestran la posibilidad cada vez más cercana que podrían estar allí los restos de la última faraona, que se suicidó en agosto del año 30. A.C. y su amante, el general romano Marco Antonio. “Hasta el momento de iniciar mis excavaciones, se pensaba que nunca se terminó la construcción del templo de Taposiris Magna y que no tenía mayor importancia. Pero entre nuestros hallazgos puedo mencionarte tres templos principales, el lago sagrado y uno de los cementerios griegos más grandes”. El estéril perímetro circunscrito en cinco kilómetros, que había sido penetrado sin éxito, por una expedición militar de Napoleón Bonaparte en 1801, cambió por completo su fecundidad cuando Martínez llegó al lugar y convenció al ex ministro de Antigüedades egipcio Zahi Hawass de la necesidad de reanudar las excavaciones para rastrear el terreno. “Hemos estado realizando excavaciones sistemáticas desde el 2005. Inicié con 30 trabajadores y 6 arqueólogos pero esto ha ido incrementando. En algunas temporadas he llegado a tener 75 hombres y 17 arqueólogos especializados. Todo depende de los objetivos de cada temporada“.

El más importante de los descubrimientos ha sido la placa de la fundación de Taposiris Magna que demuestra que Ptolomeo V lo construyó y que funcionó durante seis siglos. Una estela de caliza, tallada sólo dos años antes que la piedra Rosetta e idéntica

She has visited almost all solid foundations around Taposiris Magna, and western Alejandria. In her search, she has found about 52 bedrooms, 8 underground chambers, and a complex of tunnels 35 meters down in depth. These are convincing signs that show the possibility of finding the remains of the last pharaoh who committed suicide by August 30 years B.C. and of her lover The General Marco Antonio. She says: “Just before starting my exploration, people thought that the temple of Taposiris Magna was never finished since apparently it was not considered as important. However, I could mention at least 2 of my great findings, the Sacred Lake, and one of the biggest Greek cemeteries in the world. The sterile perimeter located 5 kilometers around the area was unsuccessfully explored by the Napoleon Bonaparte army in 1801. This thought changed completely when Martinez asked the ex-minister Zahi Hawass to renew the diggings once again. “We have systematically dug around the area since 2005. I started with 30 workers and 6 archeologists, but now the total number of workers has raised. In some seasons, I have even had around 75 workers and 17 archeologists. The number of workers depends on the goals set for each season”.

The most important discovering has been the foundation platform of Taposiris Magna. It shows why and how Ptolomeo V built it in 6 centuries. It is a limestone trail carved even before the Rosetta Stone and looking exactly the same as another

La piedra Magna es once años posterior a la Piedra Rosetta y del mismo faraón Ptolomeo V“. La estela coloca al monumento en un lugar muy destacado en cuanto a la adoración de Isis. “El demótico era el lenguaje del pueblo y el jeroglífico el de los sacerdotes. Lo importante es el contenido del decreto pues coloca a Taposiris Magna como uno de los templos más importantes del periodo griego. Sabemos que Cleopatra fue enterrada en un templo de Isis pero, como no se conocía la importancia de Taposiris Magna, se descartó“. La agitada travesía realizada por Kathleen Martínez desemboca en un importante trabajo de investigación de campo previo en el que tuvo que visitar 28 edificaciones en las proximidades de la ciudad mediterránea. En un segundo paso hubo que analizar su arquitectura e iconografía hasta dar con el lugar que, según ella, reunía el simbolismo necesario. “No quiero especular sobre el contenido de la tumba de la reina Cleopatra. ¡Lo que si estoy segura es que será un hallazgo alucinante!“ Ejemplo de la impermeabilidad a los obstáculos y las detracciones que su búsqueda despertaron, corrió con los gastos de la primera expedición. Sin embargo, lo más difícil para ella ha sido la incredulidad de su familia “Siento que la falta de apoyo de mi familia fue lo más difícil. Lo que los otros (o sea, los terceros) piensan, nunca ha sido importante para mí. Y claro, la inestabilidad política de Egipto y de toda la zona ha afec-

It is a remarkable and demotic hieroglyphic-written text. It is an actual decree and an updated version of the Rosetta Stone. The Magna Stone is 11 years older than the Rosetta Stone, yet they both belong to the same Pharaoh Ptolomeo V”. This trail places the monument in a very outstanding location, when it comes to worshiping the Isis. “The demonic was the language of the people and the hieroglyphic was the language of the priests. The importance of this decree content is how it places Taposiris Magna as one of the most important temples of the Greek period. It is known that Cleopatra was buried in an Isis Temple, but since no one was aware of Taposiris Magna, this theory was dismissed. This hectic journey led by Kathleen Martinez triggered a significant field research in about 28 buildings around the Mediterranean city. On her second trip, she had to analyze the architecture and iconography in order to reach the place where it reunited all symbolism needed. “I do not want to speculate about the content of this tomb of Queen Cleopatra, but I do want to say that I am very positive the findings will be amazing”. Examples of her persistence against all obstacles and drawdowns in her first expedition was that all her travel and investigation expenses were covered by herself. However, the toughest obstacle she has faced was her family´s skepticism. She says, “I think the lack of support from my family is really hard for me as well as the bacana 31

Como arqueóloga de nacionalidad dominicana, este proyecto tiene un cariz único y relevante, que marca un precedente en la historia de la arqueología en República Dominicana. “La nacionalidad de un proyecto arqueológico la da el jefe de la misión, por eso esta búsqueda de Cleopatra es un proyecto dominicano. Todavía la República Dominicana es un país muy joven y no ha valorado lo que este proyecto significa y donde nos coloca a nivel mundial en el campo de la ciencia y la investigación“. Durante dos intensos meses, Martínez vivió analizando los elementos de este enclave ubicado entre el mar Mediterráneo y el lago Mareotis, fundado en la década del 270 a.C. por Ptolomeo II Filadelfo, con la única geografía conocida del recinto: su muralla y una pequeña torre construida en piedra durante la época grecorromana a imagen del grandioso faro de Alejandría. “Zahi Hawass no estaba convencido cuando le planteé la idea inicial, desde luego que no. La única que está completamente convencida soy yo. ¡Esto es lo que hace falta pues es mi fe y mi entusiasmo lo que mueve este proyecto y lo ha hecho tan exitoso!“ Un hallazgo que está al mismo nivel al de los hallazgos de la tumba de Hatshepsut, la primera mujer que gobernó en el Nilo, Nefertari o Nefertiti. “Todas estas faraonas han sido mujeres excepcionales. Ahora bien, Cleopatra fue un personaje histórico único e irrepetible. Aquí lo más importante es que se pueda hacer el hallazgo de la tumba intacta porque eso es lo que nos va a permitir determinar la importancia del personaje. La tumba de Hatshepsut no se encontró intacta y su momia ya estaba abandonada“. Al igual que sucede con Cleopatra, la tumba de Nefertiti no ha sido encontrada aún pero

As the project is led by a Dominican archeologist, it reflects a unique, and relevant turnabout that sets a precedent in the archeological history of Dominican Republic. “The nationality of an archeological project is determined by whom is leading the actual mission, therefore this quest for Cleopatra has a Dominican stamp on it. It places the country in the right place and in the right time when it comes to field research and science. During 2 intense months, Martinéz started analyzing the elements of this enclave allocated between the Mediterranean and the Mareotis Lake founded in a decade 270-year A.C. by Ptolomeo II Filadelfo. It was the only geographic location known around the area: its wall and a small stone tower built during the Greco-Roman period. It is an exact image of the great Alejandria lighthouse. She states: “Certainly not, Zahi Hawass was not that convinced when I presented the initial idea. I was the one and only convinced about it. My faith and enthusiasm were vital to move this project forward and what made it possible and successful”. This finding is an important as the Hatshepsut Tombs, the first woman who governed around the Nile River, Nefertari or commonly known as Nefertiti. “All these pharaohs have been exceptional women. However, Cleopatra was a unique and one of a kind historical character. Finding her is our main goal. We also aim at finding her intact tomb to confirm the importance of such a famous character. The Hatshepsut Tomb was not found intact and his mummy was totally abandoned, for instance. Same as Cleopatra, the Nefertiti Tomb has not been found yet, but for Martinez, there are still evident similarities between them.

Nunca gobernó, al igual que Nefertari Meritmut, la primera esposa consorte de Ramses II, a la que no se le conoce nada especial en términos de ideas políticas o de gobierno. Por eso, Cleopatra fue diferente a todas, la única que se atrevió a gobernar vestida de mujer y no de hombre, como hizo Hatshepsut“. Como fruto de su arduo trabajo en Alejandría ha sido la primera arqueóloga latinoamericana a la que Egipto concede una licencia para excavar. También la primera que ha hecho una exhibición por Estados Unidos del 2007-2010 con National Geographic. El colofón lo ha puesto el Museo del Cairo este año 2017, que le ha permitido hacer una exhibición, cediendo su entrada y sala principal, para exponer las piezas halladas. “ Estoy feliz y muy orgullosa de lo que he logrado junto a mi equipo y sobre todo eternamente agradecida al Dr. Zahi Hawass. Esta exhibición se la dedico a mi padre Dr. Fausto Martínez y a mis hijos Ángel y Chantal como un ejemplo a la juventud dominicana para que nunca dejen de soñar“.

She is the first one who has run an exhibition with National Geographic around the United States from 2007 to 2010. The Cairo Museum has placed the colophon in 2017. They even let her hold an open exhibition in the hall and main entrance of the museum. She says: “I am very happy and proud of what I have done with my great team. I am also very appreciative towards Dr. Zahi Hawass. This exhibition is dedicated to my father Dr. Fausto Martinez and my son and daughter Angel and Chantal. This is a living example for the new generation of Dominicans to continue following their dreams.

El tercer grupo en arribar fue el de los taínos de origen arahuco que venían de Venezuela. La tripulación de Cristóbal Colón en su segundo viaje fue la primera expedición europea de la isla. Los lugares históricos de Puerto Rico datan de su estado colonial con España (1493-1898). Además atesora una importante variedad de ecosistemas: bosques húmedos tropicales, bosques secos, llanos costeros, montañas. El pequeño tamaño de la isla caribeña hace que de norte a sur se pueda recorrer en hora y media. De este a oeste, en algo más de tiempo, unas tres horas. It treasures a remarkable variety of ecosystems: tropical humid forests, dry forests, coastal plains, and mountains. The small size of the island makes it to travel around. From north to south one hour and a half and from east to west in three hours. Puerto Rico has a tropical climate all year around. Average temperatures during summer time (April and September) are between 90 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Por la mañana, se puede caminar por el casco antiguo de la ciudad, declarado tesoro de la humanidad por Naciones Unidas en 1983. Una isleta fortificada que data de los siglos XVI y XVII cuyo fin era proteger a la población de los ataques de corsarios y piratas, como bien han recreado películas como Piratas del Caribe y Amistad que fueron filmadas aquí. Una gran muralla que salvaguardaba la ciudad, a la que se accedía por cuatro enormes puertas de las que se conserva actualmente sólo una de ellas. El Viejo San Juan está concebido para admirar la arquitectura colonial española, las calles adoquinadas, bellas plazas, iglesias antiguas, museos y los espectaculares fuertes del Castillo San Felipe del Morro y el Castillo San Cristóbal, los más antiguos y más grandes de las Antillas. Recomendable hacer una parada para un “brunch” en el Choco Bar Cortés, un innovador espacio gastronómico donde el chocolate es la estrella principal. It is such a nice place where you can enjoy turquoise blue water, jaw-dropping landscaping and a large variety of marine life in the mangrove roots. Fantastic living beings born of the union of different extinct indigenous cultures and Spanish settlers, they are called “Operito”. They belong to their own mythology, yet with some specific attributes. Dotado de numerosas funciones simbólicas como el centro del cuerpo o el nexo entre el hombre y la Naturaleza, que estos seres extraños no lo atesoraran en su fisonomía, representaba un misticismo que estaba por encima de lo terrenal. Para los antiguos pobladores de la isla, todo objeto extraordinario en la naturaleza tenía una esencia espiritual, la cual desempeñaba un papel activo en la existencia de lo que rodea. El operito transitaba por los viejos bosques y lugares inhóspitos desde donde emanaba su poder. Una fuerza que según los más ancianos, los pájaros cantaban y elogiaban con júbilo. Un ser mítico dirigido por jefes superiores espirituales, que actuaba como agente de suerte y prosperidad. De ahí que, para cumplir con sus propósitos, estuviera dotado de diversos poderes mágicos para favorecer la dicha de campesinos y agricultores. Los más afortunados tenían la oportunidad de verlos tanto flotando en el aire como en el agua antes de la cosecha, para presagiarles una abundante y fructífera colecta de víveres o frutos. La fuerza humana del operito y a cambio de su bendición, obligaba a los agrimensores a tres cuestiones: rendirles ofrendas en los campos, venerar a los caciques de cada comunidad y guardar la paz. El operito estaba encargado de que la buena cosecha fuera símbolo del testimonio del agricultor para otros como él y ennoblecía la necesidad de replicar sus buenos comportamientos hacia el campo y el respeto a sus semejantes. Seres que recordaban al pueblo que al igual que para la buena cosecha, en la vida, hacía falta buena semilla, buen abono y riego constante.

In order to accomplish its purposes, it was gifted with super magical powers to foster the good fortune of the farmers. The luckiest ones had the chance to see it floating in the air, over the water and the harvest. Some say that it was for presaging abundance and fruitful harvesting. In order to keep its power and well-being, the surveyors give some offerings and pay homage to it, and even worship the chief of each community to maintain a peaceful town. “The Operito” was in charge of the whole harvesting process. Among its duties, it had to preserve the land, the seeds and the water. Each harvest had to be a symbol and a testimony of the farmers to ennoble the need to repeat the good customs, behavior and respect towards the field and people in general. Sin embargo, la pesca excesiva y la exportación desde estos países ha sido prohibida por la CITES, la Convención sobre el Comercio Internacional de Especies Amenazadas de Fauna y Flora Silvestres que tiene como objetivo velar para que el comercio internacional de especies no constituya una amenaza para su supervivencia. La batalla para regular su comercialización ha sido ardua. En 1992 los Estados Unidos solicitó a la CITES, que incluyera en su Apéndice II al Strombus gigas. En junio de 1999, fue aceptado en esa categoría de protección que establece regulaciones, cuotas de capturas y vedas sobre las especies incluidas en él. La producción del molusco en las aguas tropicales de República Dominicana se ha visto reducida con acontecimientos que van desde cambios climáticos, capturas irracionales e ilegales, daños a los arrecifes de coral y contaminación de las aguas marinas, además, que los lambies viven en aguas poco profundas, tienden a formar agregaciones y son de desplazamiento muy lento, haciendo que sean muy susceptibles a la pesca intensiva. De hecho, esta especie pone alrededor de medio millón de huevos y vive en praderas de pastos marinos, en arena y en productos de detritus y de algas donde puede alimentarse con facilidad. Como efecto del abuso en su pesca, los ejemplares han ido reduciéndose en tamaño. Algo que ha incidido en que la procreación desencadena especies de poco tamaño. República Dominicana estableció una veda mediante el decreto número 269-99, el cual establece que en todo el territorio nacional está prohibido capturar y comercializar el lambí en cualquiera de sus tres estados: juvenil, pre-adulto y adulto, desde el primero de julio al 31 de octubre de cada año, lo que debe motivar a los consumidores, pescadores y exportadores dominicanos a pensar en la importancia de asegurar la sostenibilidad del recurso a largo plazo, algo que no ha sucedido hasta el momento. El caracol se vende a los turistas como ornamento, aunque es necesario advertir que en muchos países está prohibida la entrada de este tipo de caracoles, siendo los mismos incautados a los turistas.

They live in seagrass beds, sand, in detritus products and seaweeds where they can feed easily. As a result of excessive fishing, the Lambie size has been reduced. The Dominican government issued a decree number 269-99, which establishes its capture at any age. This regulation is put in place from July 31st to October 31st every year. This new initiative aims at motivating fishermen, consumers, Dominican exporters to become more conscious about the importance of its substantiality in the long term. Diferentes organizaciones medioambientales dominicanas abogan por hacer más estrictas las vedas y respetar la zona de reproducción del mismo, procurando asegurar la sostenibilidad de estas especies tan importantes en nuestra dieta. El gran reto de consumidores y autoridades es salvaguardar esta veda, como en el caso de la langosta. Como parte de este gran reto, ONGs y el Gobierno están realizando campañas para que los ciudadanos tomen conciencia en el momento de elegir una comida con una especie en veda y tengan la creatividad para combinar otros alimentos alternativos para así, asegurar la sostenibilidad del lambí los próximos años.

They also suggested implementing a new handling project to reinstate the areas where the Lambies breed. Many environmental Dominican organizations advocate to make the regulations to be stricter and respect the breeding zone. Having said that, such organizations strive themselves to keep the species in the Dominican diet. The biggest challenge of consumers and authorities is to safeguard this prohibition, same as they do with the lobster situation. As part of this big challenge, NGOs and the local government are making important campaigns for the citizens to become more conscious when ordering a dish where any of these endangered species are part of the main ingredients. Creativity is a key to ensure the sustainability of the Lambí for the next years.

Según el estudio, los humanos variamos la frecuencia de los bostezos en función de la temperatura, lo cual demuestra que somos menos propensos a bostezar cuando la temperatura ambiente es mayor que la corporal, es decir, en las épocas estivales. Ello nos estará indicando que el bostezo efectivamente puede servir para regular la temperatura de nuestro cerebro.

ice el poeta Antonio Porpetta que los ángeles del mar, cuando llega la noche, arrastran suavemente a los ahogados hasta playas amigas. Con ese espíritu de puesta en valor de la vida, desde el 2009, año de su fundación, los Auxiliares Navales Dominicanos (AND), en la cabeza de Armando D’Alessandro, trabajan en pro del bien común para poner a salvo a quienes desprotegidos, el mar les sorprende de una u otra forma. Un servicio de escucha y acción permanente que está en guardia las veinticuatro horas y que ha salvado a 400 personas desde su nacimiento. El decreto 887-09 aprobó la creación de los AND, organismo dependiente de la Armada Dominicana en la figura del vicealmirante, Miguel E. Peña Acosta. La organización está compuesta por 380 voluntarios que se dividen en seis flotillas; la de Haina, La Romana, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Samaná y Santo Domingo, que se dedican a labores de búsqueda y rescate, protección del medio ambiente y promoción de la seguridad marítima. Los Auxiliares Navales Dominicanos también dan asistencia en situaciones de catástrofes naturales a través del COE, en la mesa de Comando de Operaciones Conjuntas, donde la Armada tiene un puesto permanente. Rescate y salvamento, aéreo, educación, medioambiente, inspección de embarcaciones y tecnología, son sus unidades fundamentales. Cédulas interdependientes que se mantienen conectadas y que trabajan al unísono, sobre todo, cuando participan en diferentes operativos, como el de Semana Santa, donde hacen patrullaje mixto de las costas y los principales balnearios del país como la Bahía de Ocoa, la Playa Palenque, Boca Chica, Bayahibe y Palmilla, en La Romana y en Punta Cana, Playa Juanillo, Playa Blanca, Bávaro, desde Cabeza de Toro hasta el Cortecito. La figura del Comodoro, viene del inglés commodore y éste del francés commandeur. Armando D’Alessandro como principal directivo de los AND dirige y coordina la institución.

With such a lifeguard spirit, the Dominican Marine Rescuers (Auxiliares Navales Dominicanos “AND” as in Spanish) has been around since 2009. Armando D`Alessandro is the head of this organization that works towards the general welfare to look after the unprotected ones, sometimes the sea suddenly put them at risk and that is when the AND comes around to help. It is a 24-hour service that is alert and stay active permanently, according to the records, it has saved around 400 victims since its beginning. The 887-09 act approved the creation of the AND. It is an institution that reports to the Dominican Army and is under the command of the Vice Admiral Miguel E. Peña Acosta. It is integrated by 380 volunteers divided in 6 teams; Haina, La Romana, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Samaná, and Santo Domingo. They are responsible for rescuing, searching and promoting the marine safety. The AND also grants protection to those who fall in catastrophic situations through an Operation Joint Command (Comando de Operaciones Conjuntas – COE) in where the army has a permanent participation. A pesar de la truculenta relación de la Hispaniola con algunas naciones del Viejo Continente y de las amenazas de intervencionismo norteamericano de Theodore Roosvelt con la doctrina Monroe, en 1927 arriba a República Dominicana. Su abuelo, el arquitecto Guido D’Alessandro Lombardi diseñó el actual Palacio Nacional de República Dominicana que comenzó a construirse en 1944 con motivo del primer centenario de la Independencia Nacional. También erigió el Mercado Modelo de Santiago de los Caballeros, el hospital José María Cabral y Báez y el canal de Villa Vásquez, entre otras obras, iniciando la fábrica de vidrios, que luego adquirió el dictador Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, identificando tierras óptimas para el propósito en Samaná y las canteras de mármol de esa provincia. Su padre, Armando D’Alessandro Tavárez, el mayor de siete hermanos destacó por ser un empresario exitoso, modesto, sencillo, dueño de una educación paradigmática. hablando con... talking with... Para mi es un orgullo, mi abuelo fue un gran constructor de obras muy importantes en nuestro país. Su principal obra que fue el Palacio Presidencial sede del ejecutivo, debe ser una de las obras de mayor relevancia en la historia del país. Aparte de ser el ingeniero de la obra, también fue su arquitecto y decorador, hoy todavía queda en su interior mucho arte italiano. Se siente más dominicano que italiano. ¿Conserva raíces con Europa? Claro que sí, me siento dominicano, de hecho aún no tengo la nacionalidad Italiana, pero si conservamos nuestras raíces italianas. Mi familia procede de Foggia, la capital de la provincia homónima en la región de Apulia. Una ciudad que aunque mantiene fuerte tradición agrícola se ha convertido en un importante centro comercial. Solemos ir a veranear. De Italia me encantan las ciudades de Venecia, Florencia, Milano y Roma. ¿Su familia es de tradición marítima? Solo mi padre y yo. La tradición marítima de mi padre comenzó cuando en 1980 se inició a la pesca, compartía con él esos momentos. Mi pasión por la pesca empezó cuando durante el primer día de pesca en La Romana capturamos un Marlin Azul de 452 libras. Por su tamaño, tuvieron que participar diferentes clientes de la embarcación para izarlo a bordo. Entonces me enamoré de la pesca deportiva. ¿Por qué su afición al mar? El origen es la pesca deportiva. Se realiza a nivel personal o en equipo, ya sea por diversión o por competencia, pero sin fines de lucro. Hay diversas técnicas para realizar y también existen competencias que pueden desarrollarse tanto en la orilla del mar como en mar abierto.

I feel very proud of my grandfather for building one of the most remarkable civil works in our country. His milestone work was the Presidential House named the executive office. With no doubt, it must be the most important work of his catalogue and represents one of the most iconic works of the history of the country. Besides being the engineer, he was the architect and was in charge of decorating its interior. Still, there are some traces of the Italian touch and art inside the house. This maritime tradition and sea love began when my father started sport fishing in 1980. I used to be his best companion. My fishing passion started when on my first day of fishing in La Romana, I caught a 452-pound Blue Marlin. Due to its size and weight, some boat mates helped me bring it on board. Hemos pasado de ser un lugar de paso para las embarcaciones que se dirigían a las Islas Vírgenes a uno de los puntos más importantes del mundo para la pesca deportiva de Marlin Azul. Además, existen unas playas preciosas. ¿Cómo recuerda su paso como presidente del Club Náutico? Nunca he dejado de ser un miembro activo de la Junta Directiva del club náutico, de hecho soy el Comodoro que más tiempo ha estado en el cargo, cinco años como Comodoro del Club Náutico. ¿Desde cuándo está en los AND? ¿Cómo cree que ha sido la evolución de esta institución y su proyección en el futuro? Los AND han crecido como institución, y seguirán creciendo, nos hemos enfocado en ser mas operativos, educando a la membresía, basado en cursos y seminarios de salvamento y rescate, medicina y navegación básica, con el objetivo de preparar a nuestros miembros en caso de una emergencia a nivel nacional. Ya somos la institución con reconocimiento estatal mas importante en ayuda en desastres naturales como son el COE, 911, Defensa Civil entre otras. Pero lo mas importante de esta organización es nuestra relación estrecha como brazo hermano de la Armada de República Dominicana, la cual nos ha dado todo el apoyo necesario para seguir creciendo como organización, asistiendo a la Armada en Búsqueda y Rescate así como en la preservación medioambiental de nuestro país.

Therefore, amateurs and professionals come over here. We used to be just a stop for boats before reaching the Virgin Islands, nowadays we are considered one of the best and most important Blue Marlin fishing spots in the world. And on top of that, visitors can enjoy very beautiful beaches here too. How do you remember your times as The President of the Sailing Club? I have always been an active member of the management club board. In fact, I am the only commodore that has been that long in that position, for 5 years to be more specific. How long have you been in the AND? In your opinion, how has the evolution of the institution developed and what do you think about its future plans? I started at the AND General coordination office on December 14th, 2009 that covers areas in San Pedro de Macorís and Palenque in Haina. The AND has become an important institution and will continue to do so. We are aiming at being more operative and educating our members. This training is based on courses, seminars about save-and-rescue missions, medicine and basic navigation with the purpose of preparing our members to tackle emergencies throughout the country. We are within the most state-recognized institutions when it comes to providing aid during natural disasters such as COE, 911 and the Civil Defense institution. Our close alliance with the Dominican Army is the most treasurable aspect of the organization. They are our long arm and support to continue growing as a unit. a historia inicial de la computación en nube tiene su origen a finales del siglo veinte, con el desarrollo de servicios de computación. Sin embargo el concepto se remonta a J.C.R. Licklider y John McCarthy, que emplearon el término “nube” como una metáfora de Internet, basado en el dibujo de nubes utilizado en el pasado para representar a la red telefónica, y más tarde para simular al Internet en los diagramas de red de las computadoras. Como evolución natural de la adopción generalizada de la virtualización, la arquitectura orientada a servicios y utilidad del cómputo, el cloud computing se sustenta en la idea que los usuarios finales ya no necesitan tener conocimientos o el control sobre la infraestructura de tecnología “en la nube” que los apoya. El cloud computing, ha permitido procesar datos sin que "viajen" a servidores remotos, para brindar respuestas en tiempo real al usuario. Un paso más es el edge computing que permite analizar datos relevantes con mucha velocidad y en origen, lo que reduce el flujo de información a los datacenters, con la consiguiente disminución de los costos. Una nueva modalidad que brinda capacidad de cómputo más cerca del usuario y lo empodera en el uso de la tecnología. De hecho, es la que se está utilizando en las gestiones de las llamadas smart cities o ciudades inteligentes, para el control del tráfico o del estacionamiento.

Like natural evolution of the generalized adoption of virtualization, the architecture oriented towards services and the counting usage; the cloud computing is sustained on the final users benefit. They do not need to understand how it works nor have control over the technological infrastructure of the cloud. They just need to use it for their own benefit. The cloud computing has allowed others to process data without accessing remote servers to generate solutions in real time to their users. It represents a big step on the edge computing that helps analyze relevant data lot faster and from the main source. In turn, this reduces the data flow to data centers and certainly the final cost. This new way makes the ability of computing be much closer to the user and empowers him to use the technology as he wishes. In fact, it is the same technology being used on smart cities management, for instance to control the traffic and parking lots.

Otro ejemplo de uso del cómputo distribuido o edge computing son las aplicaciones para el móvil. Hoy, los dispositivos tienen capacidad de cómputo, almacenamiento y red y brindan al usuario información relevante y en tiempo real para tomar decisiones. La tecnología edge ya está siendo aplicada en distintos rubros: desde el control de líneas de producción hasta la seguridad en aeropuertos, permitiendo captar imágenes y hacer reconocimiento facial de personas potencialmente peligrosas en tiempo real. Tanto la movilidad como la Internet de las Cosas (IoT) son impulsores del edge computing. De hecho, según proyecciones de Schneider Electric, especialista global en manejo de energía y con operaciones en más de 100 países, ofrece soluciones integrales para diferentes segmentos de mercado, actualmente existen en el mundo unos 14.000 millones de equipos conectados (casi dos por persona), pero en 2019 serán 180.000 millones. Las cifras son en sí mismas exorbitantes pero a esto se suma que los consumidores tienen expectativas muy altas respecto de la disponibilidad y seguridad de sus datos. Esto implica un desafío grande para las distintas empresas que ofrecen almacenamiento y mantenimiento de dicha información, brindando seguridad y disponibilidad las 24 horas de todos los días del año. Con este análisis, todo indica que cada vez más dispositivos estarán conectados y tomando decisiones autónomas: desde cafeterías que se conectan con supermercados para hacer compras online, tenis que registran datos como pulsaciones, glucosa en sangre kilómetros recorridos y velocidad, y automóviles autónomos (algo que ya las compañías Ford y Google están desarrollando), que eligen la ruta más adecuada en una ciudad para evitar los embotellamientos o cortes de calles, tomando decisiones en microsegundos.
