bacana Bacana, es lo óptimo, bello, genial, estupendo. Es todo aquello que genere bacanería.

La bacanería acontece cuando se celebra la vida de una forma intensa, prudente y moderada, cuando se genera alegría, relacionándonos con los otros festiva y respetuosamente.

Bacana is everthing that is optimal, beautiful, great, wonderful. Bacana is everyhing that generates “bacaneria” (joy). “Bacaneria” happens when life is celebrated in an intense, wise and moderate, or when joy interacts with other feelings respectfully.

La emoción de la bacanería surge cuando deviene algo positivo.

Si eres buena gente, actúas “a lo bien” Si te comportas de manera justa, solidaria y ética.

Si cultivas la amistad.

Si fomentas la fraternidad y la cultura de paz en tu comunidad.

FUERTE DE NAVIDAD FORT OF NAVIDAD (CHRISTMAS FORT) ue Cristóbal Colón y su tripulación partieron de Palos Moguer (Huelva, España) el 3 de Agosto de 1492, rumbo a la Conquista de nuevas tierras, en dos carabelas, la Pinta y la Niña, siendo estas capitaneadas por los hermanos Pinzón y una nao,

La Santa María, capitaneada por el mismo Colón, es una parte de la historia que prácticamente todos conocemos.

Tras avistar tierra el 12 de octubre, se llevan a cabo varias expediciones por las islas cercanas, a las que bautizó como Juana (Cuba) y la Española (República Dominicana y Haití). En una de estas expediciones, el 25 de Diciembre de 1492, frente a la costa haitiana, la Santa María encalló quedando inservible, lo que persuadió a Colón para utilizar sus restos en la construcción de un Fuerte: “La Navidad”, en honor a la fecha en que acontecieron los sucesos siendo este el origen del primer asentamiento en el Nuevo Continente.

Para todas las labores de desembarco y construcción contaron con la colaboración de los Indios cuyo jefe nativo era Guacanagari y de quien Colón recibió como presentes objetos de oro. Esto fue la confirmación que necesitaba el Almirante para poder demostrar a los Reyes Católicos la importancia y justificación de tan arriesgada expedición.

LA SANTA MARÍA ENCALLÓ QUEDANDO INSERVIBLE, LO QUE PERSUADIÓ A COLÓN PARA UTILIZAR SUS RESTOS EN LA CONSTRUCCIÓN DE UN FUERTE: “LA NAVIDAD” EN HONOR A LA FECHA EN QUE ACONTECIERON LOS SUCESOS. Colón partió el 4 de enero de 1493 y tras 2 meses de travesía llega a España en La Niña, dejando en el nuevo asentamiento a 39 hombres, con el fin de mantener las relaciones amistosas con los isleños y buscar las minas de oro de las que procedían los presentes con los que fue agasajado.

En Septiembre de 1493, el Almirante se hace a la mar en un segundo viaje al nuevo mundo con una Armada formada por 17 barcos y más de 1.500 hombres, con el objetivo de colonizar, predicar la fe católica y seguir explorando.

Al llegar a “La Navidad” descubre que sus hombres habían sido asesinados y el Fuerte destruido.

Tras una entrevista con Guacanagari, este le explicó que parte de sus hombres tuvieron un comportamiento deshonroso con sus mujeres y arrasaron sus tierras; que se adentraron a la región del Cacique Caonabo con la esperanza de encontrar oro, y éste los asesinó y destruyó el Fuerte. bacana 9

hristopher Columbus and his crew parting Palos Moguer (Huelva, Spain) on August 3rd, 1492, off to conquer new lands with 2 caravels, The Pinta and The Niña, captained by the Pinzon brothers, and a nao, the Santa Maria, captained by Colombus himself, is pretty much a part of history we all know.

Upon landfall on October 12, a series of expeditions around nearby islands took place, naming these Juana (Cuba) and La Española (Dominican Republic and Haiti). During these expeditions, on December 25th, 1492 and off the Haitian coastline, The Santa Maria ran aground. Left unusable, this convinced Columbus to use its remains in the construction of a fort: “La Navidad”, honoring the date in which these events had occurred and marking the beginning of the first settlement in the new world.

For all landing and construction work, they had the cooperation of the indigenous natives (Indians), lead by native chief Guacanagari, from whom Columbus received gold objects as presents. This was the affirmation the Admiral needed to show the Catholic Monarchs the importance of such risky expedition, as well as the justified reasons for it.

THE SANTA MARIA RAN AGROUND AND WAS LEFT UNUSABLE. THIS CONVINCED COLUMBUS TO USE ITS REMAINS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF A FORT: “LA NAVIDAD”, HONORING THE DATE IN WHICH THESE EVENTS HAD OCCURRED. Columbus departed on January 4th, 1493, and after a 2 month voyage he arrived Spain in The Niña, leaving 39 men in the new settlement in order to maintain a friendly relationship with locals and search for the gold mines from which the presented gifts came.

In September 1493, the Admiral set sail on a second voyage to the new world with a fleet of 17 ships and over 1,500 men, aimed to colonize, preach the catholic faith and continue exploring.

Upon arriving at “Navidad” he discovered that his men had been killed and the fort destroyed. Following a meeting, Guacanagari explained that some of Columbus’ men were showing dishonorable behavior towards the native women and destroyed their land; that they had entered the region of Cacique Caonabo in hopes to find gold, and that it was Caonabo who had killed his men and destroyed the fort.

Ante este hecho, Colón siguió navegando y el 22 de noviembre fundó el asentamiento La Isabela en honor a la reina de España.

Tras nombrar a su hermano Bartolomé, Gobernador de la isla, se hizo de nuevo a la mar. El asentamiento La Isabela fue abandonado trasladando a toda la población y fundando en 1498, Santo Domingo, en el margen Oriental del río Ozama, cerca del mar Caribe.

Given this fact, Columbus continued sailing and on November 22 he established the settlement “La Isabela”, honoring the queen of Spain.

After appointing his brother Bartholomew as Governor of the island, he sailed back to sea. La Isabela was left abandoned, and the entire population was moved, founding Santo Domingo in 1498, on the eastern bank of the Ozama river, near the Caribbean Sea.

El Fuerte de La Navidad no sólo fue un breve capítulo de la era del descubrimiento sino que marcó el comienzo de una nueva etapa: la conquista armada.

The Fort of Navidad is not only a brief chapter in the age of discovery, but it marks the begining of a new stage: the armed conquest.

BAYAHIBE: RINCÓN DE ENSUEÑO BAYAHIBE: A DREAM CORNER a belleza de sus playas, la riqueza submarina y el candor de sus pobladores, han convertido esta zona en uno de los destinos más atractivos de la República Dominicana.

Bayahibe es mágico, con echar un solo vistazo al mar entiendes el encanto de este pueblo de pescadores. No se puede negar que otra de las ventajas de este lugar es su cercanía con la capital de Santo Domingo.

Apenas al llegar, se van dibujando los distintos rostros de este pueblo que aun posee algunas antiguas casas de madera, pintadas con los vistosos colores caribeños y que se mantienen intactas a la orilla del mar. Asimismo, se siguen conservando las sencillas yolas de madera que aun surcan las aguas en busca de los frutos que el mar ofrece a los pescadores que mantienen, aun hoy, su actividad tradicional.

A lo largo del pueblo, existen varios restaurantes donde los visitantes pueden disfrutar de platos a base de pescado, langosta o del típico lambí, tan abundante en estas aguas.

Una de las playas más famosas de Bayahibe es Dominicus, está situada en la zona de amortiguamiento del Parque Nacional del Este, por eso las condiciones de las aguas que bañan sus arenas blancas son perfectas, pues cuenta con excelentes parámetros de transparencia de aguas y muy poca contaminación. La convierte en una playa ideal para practicar todo tipo de deportes acuáticos y navegación a vela, así como submarinismo y snorkel, ya que en esta zona hay un arrecife coralino.

Esta playa presume de ser la primera del Caribe en tener el distintivo de Bandera Azul. Un reconocimiento internacional que garantiza la salubridad de sus aguas, la seguridad en la zona de baño y el manejo sostenible de la franja costera, sustentados en la realización de un monitoreo permanente sobre estos y otros aspectos.

ESTE PUEBLO QUE AUN POSEE ALGUNAS ANTIGUAS CASAS DE MADERA, PINTADAS CON LOS VISTOSOS COLORES CARIBEÑOS Y QUE SE MANTIENEN INTACTAS A LA ORILLA DEL MAR. DESDE BAYAHIBE TAMBIÉN SALEN LAS PRINCIPALES EXCURSIONES EN BARCO A OTROS LUGARES DE GRAN INTERÉS. Detrás de la playa pública aún se puede observar una pequeña laguna, visitada por gran número de aves de la zona, entre las que se pueden encontrar garzas y gallaretas que comparten el espacio acuático con galápagos y diferentes especies de anfibios y peces de agua dulce.

Desde Bayahibe también salen las principales excursiones en barco a otros lugares de gran interés. Las islas Catalina y Saona también poseen exuberantes playas, sitios de buceo y snorkel.

he beauty of its beaches, the underwater wealth and the candor of its people, has turned this area into one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the Dominican Republic.

Bayahibe is magical. Just one quick glance at the ocean and you understand the charm of this fishing village.

Another undeniable advantage of this place is its proximity to the capital in Santo Domingo.

As soon as you get there, a colorful drawing is created with the faces of a town that still has some old wooden houses painted in bright Caribbean colors, holding intact built at shore.

Also well preserved are the simple wooden boats (called yolas) that still ply the waters in search of the offerings the sea grants the fishermen who remain, even today, in their traditional business labor.

There are several restaurants throughout town where visitors can enjoy seafood-based dishes, lobster or the typical conch (lambi), which is so abundant in these waters.

One of the most famous beaches in Bayahibe is Dominicus. Located in the buffer zone of Parque Nacional del Este (East’s National Park), the water that washes its white sands holds perfect form, with excellent transparency settings and minor pollution, making it ideal for water sports such as sailing, scuba diving, and snorkeling, as there are coral reefs in this area.

In fact, this beach gloats on being the first in the Caribbean to receive the distinctive Blue Flag award, an international recognition for its guaranteed healthy waters, safe bathing areas and sustainable management of the coastal strip supported by the ongoing permanent monitoring of these and other issues.

BAYAHIBE IS ALSO THE POINT OF DEPARTURE FOR MAIN BOAT TRIPS TO OTHER PLACES OF INTEREST THE FACES OF A TOWN THAT STILL HAS SOME OLD WOODEN HOUSES PAINTED IN BRIGHT CARIBBEAN COLORS, HOLDING INTACT BUILT AT SHORE. Behind the public beach, you can still see a small lake, visited by a large number of birds in the area, amongst which you may find herons and coots sharing water space with galapagos turtles, different amphibian species and freshwater fish.

Bayahibe is also the point of departure for main boat trips to other places of interest, such as Catalina and Saona islands, which have lush beaches as well as diving and snorkeling sites. Another destination is Palmilla, only reached by boat and – along with the other islands – part of Parque Nacional Del Este (East’s National Park), a protected area that allows for the preservation of their natural splendor.

Otro de los destinos es Palmilla, donde solo se puede llegar en bote, ya que, junto a las otras islas, pertenece al Parque Nacional del Este, un área protegida que permite preservar su esplendor natural.

Este parque se encuentra localizado en el extremo suroriental del país, en la provincia de La Altagracia entre los poblados de Boca de Yuma y Bayahibe. Su superficie es de 808 km² de los cuales 420 km² son terrestres y 388 km² corresponden a la parte marina.

Como área de conservación, sirve para proteger algunas especies de mamíferos como el solenodonte, la jutía, el manatí y el delfín, así como tortugas marinas e iguanas rinoceronte. Además de variedades de aves como la paloma coronita, la cotorra, el pelícano o alcatraz, el bubí, la tijereta, la lechuza y la gaviota. Otra característica singular del Parque es la Bahía de las Calderas, una especie de albufera rodeada de manglares con una significativa biodiversidad.

Para los aficionados a la arqueología, encontrarán numerosas cuevas con muestras de arte rupestre y con restos arqueológicos de la cultura taína, en especial la Cueva de José María.

En la misma Punta de Bayahíbe, se encuentra uno de los atractivos botánicos más interesantes de la isla, el pequeño bosquecillo de Pereskia quisqueyana, planta de la familia de las cactáceas con hermosas flores conocidas como rosas de Bayahíbe, pues esta especie de planta es endémica y solamente crece en este discreto rincón del mundo a la orilla del mar.

Tanta riqueza natural y arqueológica han convertido esta zona en una de las más visitadas, por lo que se estima que este paraíso se convertirá pronto en el nuevo gran destino de la República Dominicana.

The park is located in the southeastern corner of the country, in the province of La Altagracia between the towns of Boca de Yuma and Bayahibe. It has an area of 808 sq. Km, 420km² of which is land and 388km² of it is sea life.

As a conservation area, it serves to protect some mammal species such as the solenodon, the guinea pig, manatees and dolphins, in addition to several protected reptile species such as sea turtles and the rhinoceros iguana, and a variety of birds such as the whitecrowned pigeon, the parrot, the pelican, the eagle owl, the earwig, the owl and the gull. Another unique feature of the park is “Bahia de Las Calderas” (Boiler bay) a kind of lagoon surrounded by mangroves with significant biodiversity.

Archeology buffs will find numerous caves with rock art samples and archaeological remains of Taino culture, especially at “Jose Maria’s Cave” (Cueva de Jose Maria).

At Punta de Bayahibe is one of the most interesting botanical attractions in the island, the little forest of Pereskia Quisqueyana, an endemic species of cactus with beautiful flowers commonly known as the Bayahibe Rose, which only grows in this quiet discreet corner of the world at seashore.

So much natural and archaeological wealth has made this area one of the most visited, speculating this paradise will soon become the next great destination in the Dominican Republic. bacana 15

TÍPICO NAVIDEÑO TYPICAL CHRISTMAS La gastronomía dominicana es un tesoro que sale a relucir en las épocas de tradición como la navidad. Sus platos están influenciados por la mezcla de culturas que se dio en el país a través de la conquista y colonización del nuevo mundo.

ENSALADA DE FRUTAS NAVIDEÑA CHRISTMAS FRUIT SALAD

Ingredientes Manzana Pera Melón Pasas Piña Uvas verdes y uvas tintas Gomitas de navidad Aderezo: Vino dulce 1 cucharada de whisky 1 cucharada de azúcar 1 cucharada vinagre balsámico 1 pizca de sal PREPARACIÓN Se cortan todos los ingredientes en trozos del mismo tamaño y mezclar. A parte mezclar los ingredientes del aderezo y añadir a la ensalada.

Servir fría y decorar con fresas y una astilla de canela.

Ingredientes 4 1/2 libras de batata 1/2 barra de mantequilla 2 tazas de azúcar 2 latas de leche evaporada 1 cucharada de jengibre rallado 2 tazas de leche de coco 1 cucharadita de canela molida 1 cucharadita de sal 1cucharadita de extracto de vainilla 1cucharadita de pimienta molida 1/2 taza de coco rallado PREPARACIÓN 1. Las batatas se pelan y rallan crudas. A parte mezclar la vainilla, la canela, la pimienta, el azúcar, la sal y el coco rallado y la ralladura de la batata.

4. Hornear a 400° durante 40 minutos o hasta introducir un palillo en la masa y este salga limpio.

Peel and grate the sweet potatoes raw. On the side, mix the vanilla extract, the cinnamon, pepper, sugar, salt, shredded coconut and the grated sweet potatoes.

Ingredientes 6 tazas de arroz cocido (si es del día anterior mejor) 4 cucharadas de mantequilla 1 cebolla mediana 1/2 paquete de tocineta 1/2 taza de puerro picadito 2 plátanos maduros firmes 1/2 taza de almendras tostadas y picadas PREPARACIÓN Cortar el plátano en lonjas finas y freírlo en muy poco aceite, cuando esté frío cortar en cuadritos pequeños y reservar.

Ingredients 6 Cups of cooked rice (better if it’s cooked a day early) 4 Tablespoon of butter 1 Medium size Onion ½ pack of Bacon ½ Cup of finely chopped leek 2 Sweet and firm plantains ½ Cup toasted almonds, diced

A parte, sofreír la tocineta y retirar el exceso de grasa, en la misma olla derretir la mantequilla y sofreír la cebolla. Agregar el arroz cocido y revolver hasta que los ingredientes se vayan integrando, agregar los cuadritos de plátano y el puerro y mezclar.

Poner en una fuente y decorar con las almendras picadas.

Separately, fry the bacon and remove the excess fat; in the same pan, melt the butter and sauté the onion. Add the cooked rice and stir until ingredients integrate. Add the cubed plantains, the diced leek and mix.

Como sucede en la mayoría de los países, desde finales de octubre comienza la preparación para esta época, no solo el comercio saca sus mejores galas para atraer más clientes, sino que muchos se contagian de esta alegría y es común ver algún que otro arbolito de navidad iluminando una ventana durante las noches. Una de las primeras señales de que la navidad está en camino es el cambio en el clima, la temperatura se vuelve un poco más fresca y hay un aumento en los vientos que caracterizan la época y con ella un desfile de costumbres y tradiciones que distinguen a los dominicanos del resto del mundo.

AGUINALDOS, SONGS AND GINGER The tradition of Aguinaldos is to meet friends and go from house to house singing Christmas carols, performed to the rhythm of drums, güiras and accordions.

EL ANGELITO Y EL DIABLITO Es una de las tradiciones más arraigadas, sobre todo, entre los compañeros de trabajo, los amigos y hasta en los mismos barrios.

Consiste en un intercambio de regalos, se escriben todos los nombres de los participantes y estos papelitos son distribuidos de forma aleatoria y en secreto. Cada uno será el angelito de otro y le dejará en secreto un regalo diario, semanal o los días establecidos, hasta la celebración de una fiesta o baile final de intercambio, donde se revela la identidad del angelito. El diablito son pequeñas bromas que se obsequian.

THE LITTLE ANGEL AND THE LITTLE DEVIL One of the most deeply rooted traditions, especially among co-workers, friends and even in some neighborhoods. The names of all the participants are written in small pieces of paper; these notes are secretly and randomly distributed among the participants.

Each participant will be another’s “Angel” and will secretly leave a gift daily, weekly or on the assigned dates of the exchange, until the day of the final exchange, usually done over a celebration party with dancing, food and drinks, when the angel’s identity is revealed.

The little devils are jokes secretly given away during the exchange.

AÑO NUEVO Si la navidad tiene una atmósfera más íntima de familia, el año nuevo es una celebración que no termina hasta avanzada la mañana del primero. Se acostumbra la cena de medianoche compuesta por prácticamente los mismos platillos que en navidad. Como es costumbre, en la mayor parte del mundo, hay un brindis por el nuevo año, y junto a la familia y amigos se realiza la cuenta regresiva. Para muchos, ir al malecón a ver el amanecer es una tradición que no se puede perder. Conciertos, juegos de pólvora, baile y mucha comida son solo el inicio del nuevo año que comienza. Si quiere que la buena suerte le siga por el resto del año, no dude en poner en práctica estos consejos: Lavar la casa y limpiar los armarios, deshacerse de las ropas viejas y sustituirlas por nuevas, pintar la casa para el nuevo año, vestirse de amarillo el primero de enero… son sólo algunas de las opciones. No olvide sacar una maleta a la media noche, trae viajes o vacaciones.

¿QUIÉN TRAE LOS REGALOS? Hay algo que sin duda le pone el toque especial a esta época y es la alegría de los niños cuando reciben sus regalos.

Tradicionalmente, esta era una tarea exclusiva de los Reyes Magos, que llegaban cargados de juguetes el seis de enero, sin embargo, Santa ha venido ganando terreno en los últimos años y se las ingenia para entrar en las casas, a falta de chimeneas, y dejarles a los niños la madrugada del 25 de diciembre un obsequio como premio por haberse portado bien.

Pero para los que ni el sigiloso Santa ni los despistados tres Reyes Magos tuvieron presentes en su lista, queda una tercera oportunidad de recibir un regalo: La Vieja Belén. Ella quizás no goza de la misma popularidad que sus homólogos navideños, pero es el consuelo de muchas familias pobres que no pueden comprar juguetes en esta época. Entonces, días después de la epifanía, aparecen pequeños regalos que trajo la Vieja Belén.

Something certainly gives a special touch to this season and that is the joy of children receiving their gifts.Traditionally, this was an exclusive task of the Magi, who arrived loaded with toys on January 6; however, Santa has been gaining ground in recent years and manages to get into houses, in the absence of chimneys, and, during the early hours of December 25, leave children a present for wellbehaving and being nice.

Nevertheless, even those outside Santa’s secretive list or forgotten by the clueless Magi, have a third chance to receive a present: Old Lady Bethlehem.

While she may not enjoy the same popularity as her Christmas counterparts, she compensates for many underprivileged families that may not be able to afford buying toys during this season, then, a few days after the epiphany, small gifts will appear, brought by Old Lady Bethlehem.

OUR LADY OF LA ALTAGRACIA (OUR LADY OF GRACE)

Los visitantes y creyentes pueden contemplar el cuadro que representa la imagen de la virgen, que según la historia se apareció en el lugar.

La leyenda sobre cómo “llegó” la virgen al Nuevo Mundo, dice que la hija de un colonizador le pidió a su padre que le consiguiera una imagen de la Virgen de Altagracia ya que ella la había visto en sueños. El hombre se sorprendió, pues no había escuchado de esa advocación.

Tras una búsqueda sin resultados, de regreso de su viaje por la isla y desanimado al no encontrar la imagen, se alojó en casa de un amigo.

Allí, otro visitante al oír su inquietud, le dijo que él tenía la imagen y se la ofreció. En ella se ve a la Virgen María adorando al Niño Jesús, recostado en una cuna a sus pies y a San José al fondo.

t is said that over 30% of Dominican women carry the name Altagracia, either as first or as a middle name, and it is no surprise. Considering the devotion given to the “Protective Mother of the Dominican Republic” many may confuse her as the patron of the country, a designation that belongs to Our Lady of Mercy (Our Lady of Las Mercedes).

Visiting the Basilica of Our Lady of Grace every January 21 is a tradition for Catholics, who attribute miracles and favors to her image.

This was the first sanctuary of the New World and it is located in the province of Higüey.

In here, both visitors and believers can contemplate the painting portraying the virgin’s image that, according to the story, appeared at the place.

The legend about how the virgin “arrived” to the New World, tells the story of a settler’s daughter that asked her father to get her a picture of the virgin of La Altagracia because she had seen it in her dreams.

The man was surprised because he had never heard of such advocacy; after a fruitless search, returning from his trip around the island and discouraged for not finding the image, he stayed at a friend’s house. In here, another visitor who heard of his quest mentioned he had this image and offered it. The image showed Virgin Mary in adoration of baby Jesus, lying in a crib upon her feet, and St. Joseph in the background.

El padre de la niña, fue a buscar al visitante al llegar el día, pero lo más extraño fue que jamás volvió a aparecer. Cuando llegó con el preciado regalo, su hija lo guardó, sin embargo, la imagen desapareció y la encuentran en la copa de un naranjo cerca de su casa.

La gente interpretó este acontecimiento como un deseo de la Virgen para que la colocaran en la ermita parroquial que en ese entonces allí había, y así se hizo. Poco tiempo después y al incrementarse el número de peregrinos, en 1572 se construyó un templo más grande y posteriormente la actual Basílica, inaugurada en 1971 y consagrada un año más tarde. Otra leyenda cuenta que la imagen fue traída desde España, y que la virgen se le apareció a una niña sobre una peña en la provincia de Extremadura. Su fecha se debe al triunfo de los españoles en la Batalla de Sabana Real, el 21 de enero de 1690, dónde el ejército español derrotó al francés, cuando este último quería apoderarse de La Hispaniola en su totalidad.

Se dice que los españoles le pidieron a la Virgen de la Altagracia, que les ayudara a ganar la batalla, vencieron el 21 de enero, y realizaron una gran fiesta religiosa, con motivo de veneración a la Altagracia.

A short time after this, as the amount of visiting pilgrims increased, a larger temple was built in 1572, and later the current basilica, inaugurated in 1971 and consecrated a year later.

Another legend tells the image was brought from Spain and that the virgin appeared to a girl over a rock in the province of Extremadura.

The date is due to the Spanish triumph at the battle of Sabana Real, on January 21 1690, when the Spanish army defeated the French, as the latter wanted to undertake La Hispaniola as a whole. It is said the Spanish asked the Virgin of La Altagracia to help them win the battle; they succeeded on January 21 and held a grand religious celebration honoring and in devotion to La Altagracia.

Visitar cada 21 de enero la Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia es una tradición para los católicos, quienes le atribuyen a la Imagen milagros y favores. Este fue el primer santuario del Nuevo Mundo y está ubicado en la provincia de Higüey.

DATOS CURIOSOS Se dice que la imagen de la virgen llegó al país un 15 de agosto y ese debería ser el dìa de su veneración, pero en 1692 Monseñor Arturo de Meriño pidió a la Santa Sede cambiarla por el 21 de enero, ya que, el 15 de agosto se celebra el misterio de la Asunción de la Virgen a los Cielos. Su petición fue aprobada.

However, in 1692, Monsignor Arturo de Meriño asked the Holy See to change it to January 21, because August 15 celebrates the feast of The Assumption of The Virgin Mary into heavens. ¿Cómo surge el nombre Lolo jackson?

“Mi nombre es Carmelo Alberto Acosta”. Lolo Jackson es un apodo; lo de Jackson vino porque antes jugaba vitilla en la época de 1978, cuando Reggie Jackson de los Yankees bateaba muchos jonrones.

Luego vino la pintura ¿Cómo sucedió? ¿Siempre tuviste inclinaciones artísticas? ¿En qué momento empiezas a pintar?

Desde pequeño pintaba camisetas, pantalones, dibujos y otras cosas. Usaba una pintura especial para tela de camisetas, y pintaba con tonos lumínicos con el fondo negro. Mi suerte estaba ahí, con un estilo nuevo.

Me ofrecí a pintar en la tienda “El Mundo del Tennis”, era por los tenis, mi familia habia sido siempre pobre, y nunca habia tenido unos. Si conseguía el trabajo, podría negociar las zapatillas. Quería pintarle la tienda con un buen diseño, pero no tenía ni siquiera para comprar los materiales. Me dio 950 pesos, que para esa época era mucho dinero, y a cambio le aseguré que el trabajo sería de primera calidad.

Del dinero me quedaron 400 pesos de ganancia. ¡Oye! Yo nunca había visto 400 pesos. Me volví loco. Me fui a mi casa y al día siguiente le mostré el diseño… quedó impactado y desde entonces tuve trabajo en esa empresa.

El fenómeno que hizo más popular tu estilo ha sido la banca de apuestas ¿Cuándo empezaste a trabajar con este tipo de negocio?

Empece a pintar en los colmados, boutiques de ropa, salones de belleza, tiendas de celulares… Esos colores empezaron a meterse de lleno en Villa Mella, pintaba muchísimos negocios. Un señor que se llama Chago, me llamó para una cafetería, le cobré como 2,000 pesos. Lo que no sabía es que Chago tenía más bancas y me contrató para pintarlas todas. A partir de ese momento los banqueros empezaron a llamarme por recomendación de los unos y los otros,

How does the name Lolo Jackson come up?

My name is Carmelo Alberto Acosta. Lolo Jackson is a nickname; the Jackson part came about back in 1978, when I used to play vitilla, and Reggie Jackson from the Yankees was hitting a lot of home runs.

Then came painting… How did it happen? Did you always have a disposition for the arts? At what moment did you start painting?

From a young age, I painted t-shirts, pants, drawings and other things. I used a special t-shirt fabric and painted using bright fluorescent colors with a black background. My luck was there, with a new style.

I offered to paint at the shop “El Mundo del Tennis” (Tennis World), because of the tennis shoes; my family had always been poor, I’d never worn a pair tennis shoes in my life and if they gave me the job, I could negotiate the sneakers. I wanted to paint the store for him with a good design, but I didn’t even have the money to buy the materials.

He gave me $950 pesos, which was a lot of money at the time, and in exchange, I assured him the work would be of top quality.

En esta época empiezan a surgir personas que copian mi estilo. ¡Hasta se llamaban Jackson!, pero no me importó, yo seguía con mi negocio. De todos ellos solo hay uno, el Vico Jackson, que trabajó conmigo casi 12 años. El es el único que puede decir que tiene “la firma mía”, porque se la ganó. Los demás son copia.

En muchos de tus trabajos utilizas personajes creados por ti o te apropias de personajes famosos de dibujos animados. ¿En qué momento decides incorporar estos personajes a tus trabajos?

Yo hago lo que el cliente me pide. Hay personajes de cómics de la televisión que a la gente le gusta mucho y quieren que se los pinte en la banca, pero también hago diseños exclusivos.

Todo eso es la publicidad, las personas compran lo que ven en la televisión. Algo que fue un éxito publicitario fué utilizar el eslogan “Pagamos hoy mismo” con personajes y agregar diferentes símbolos de dinero, una mano con dinero…

Desde tus inicios has trabajado con la pintura ¿Cómo defines tu profesión, tu trabajo como pintor?

Me considero un creativo en mi trabajo, ademas uno nunca termina de aprender.

Nos contaste cómo empezaste a trabajar tú solo ¿Alguna vez tomaste o pensaste en tomar clases de arte o pintura?

Angel Haché (profesor de arte) me suspendió. Yo decía que por instinto lo hacía más rápido. Tenía controlado el dominio de la medida “a ojo”.

What I didn’t know is that Chago had more betting parlors, and he hired me to paint all of them. I do what the client asks me. There are cartoon characters seen on television, that people like very much, and they want me to paint them at the parlor, but I also do exclusive designs.

All of that is advertising; everyone buys what they see on television.

The phrase “We pay Today” putting a money sign on a character, are also things that draw attention, this is publicity for the business.

Since your beginnings, you have been working with paint.

How do you define your career, your work as a painter?

I consider myself a creative in my work, and you never stop learning.

You told us of how you started working on your own, did you ever take or thought about taking art or painting lessons?

Angel Haché (art teacher) suspended me. I said I did it better by instinct. I had the scale measure management under control.

Este es un estilo creado por mí. Te das cuenta que hasta en la pureza, en mi trabajo se ve la calidad y el material, la pureza de lo que yo hago. Los pintores “creadores de tendencia” han dicho “Lolo Jackson es Lolo Jackson en su área”, ellos dicen eso porque lo reconocen. En esta línea tu puedes ser famoso, pero si no sabes los trucos, te caes…

Como conclusión a mi trayectoría artística podría decir que “Yo me puedo morir mañana y sé que dejé algo en la memoria de muchos.”

CONVIERTA AL SOL EN UN ALIADO DE SU PIEL MAKE THE SUN AN ALLY OF YOUR SKIN n el Caribe, no hay que dejarse engañar por la temperatura, los rayos UV que recibe su piel no solo pueden llegar a arruinar el bronceado que busca, sino que pueden tener consecuencias negativas para su salud a largo plazo.

Aunque los estudios médicos indican que pequeñas exposiciones a los rayos UV son positivas, porque juegan un rol esencial en la producción de vitamina D, no podemos abusar del tiempo que pasamos a merced del Astro Rey. EN BUSCA DEL DORADO EXÓTICO Antes de nada, tenemos que aclararle algo, para los dermatólogos una piel bronceada es sinónimo de una piel lesionada, por eso no se debe conseguir un bronceado permanente; la piel trata de regenerarse y poco a poco va eliminando las células de la piel muerta, es la razón por la cual recobramos, en cuestión de semanas, nuestro tono natural. Así, es fundamental, que si decide exponerse al sol, tome en cuenta todos los factores que pueden proteger su piel de daños más serios como el melanoma. Un buen bloqueador solar, regular las horas y el tiempo de exposición son sus mejores armas para disfrutar de la playa sin remordimientos.

TIEMPO DE EXPOSICIÓN Si su intención es dorarse en un día, le advertimos que puede estar al borde del desastre! Lo más probable es que consiga quemar la piel, uno de los dolores más incómodos y que le harán lucir como un crangrejo. Las horas más recomendables son antes de las 10:00 a.m. y después de las 4:00 p.m. Exponerse al sol poco tiempo durante varios días es lo mejor.

UN BUEN BLOQUEADOR Debe convertir este producto es su mejor aliado en la playa porque protege su piel contra la radiación, aún estando en la sombra, los rayos UV se reflejan en la arena blanca y pueden provocar quemaduras. Para pieles muy blancas, lo ideal es un factor de protección solar (FPS) 40 o 60. En el caso de las pieles más oscuras pueden usar un FPS 15. Para los niños, lo ideal es utilizar un FPS de 50 en adelante y cuidar que jueguen en la sombra y no tomen el sol durante las horas de mayor radiación. No debe olvidar repetir las aplicaciones cada dos horas, sobre todo si ha estado en el agua más de 30 minutos o ha sudado mucho.

LAGO ENRIQUILLO, LA JOYA DEL SUR LAKE ENRIQUILLO, THE JEWEL OF THE SOUTH na de las bellezas naturales más emblemáticas del país, no solo por la particularidad de su entorno casi desértico, sino por la variedad de especies de flora y fauna, que viven en la zona. Este parque natural está ubicado en el Suroeste de la República Dominicana, en el valle de Neiba. Presenta un paisaje exuberante con la sierra de Neiba al Norte y la sierra de Bahoruco al Sur. Según los expertos este lago es el resultado de un antiguo canal marino que unía las bahías de Neiba y Puerto Príncipe en Haití. Está situado aproximadamente a 44 metros bajo el nivel del mar y rodeado por montañas que sobrepasan los 2,000 metros, es un lugar tan impresionante que fue nominado, hace algunos años, para ser una de las siete nuevas maravillas del mundo. Otra de sus características es la salinidad de sus aguas, ya que es mayor que la del mar y la variación depende principalmente de la evaporación. En la parte norte del lago, se han encontrado valores máximos que superan los 66 ppm (partes por millón) en el fondo, lo que hace que el lago sea hipersalino.

En los alrededores del lago, se encuentran varios senderos, ideales para caminatas de aproximadamente una hora, a través del bosque seco. Se pueden apreciar numerosas especies de plantas desérticas así como las diversas especies de cactus que abundan en el lugar.

ne of the most emblematic natural beauties in the country, not just for its particular almost deserted environment but also for the variety of species, both flora and fauna, that live in the area. his natural park is located within the Neyba Valley, in the southwest of the Dominican Republic. It shows an exuberant landscape that merges with the Neyba Mountains to the north and Bahoruco Mountains to the south. Experts say the lake is the result of an ancient sea channel linking the bays of Neyba and Port au Prince in Haiti. Located at approximately 44 meters under sea level and surrounded by mountains exceeding 2,000 meters, it is so impressive that a few years ago it was nominated to be one of the world’s seven new wonders.

Another feature is the salinity of its waters, greater than that of the sea, with variant levels depending on the region’s high evaporation rates. Salinity in the northern side of the lake has reached maximum values, exceeding 66ppm (part per million) at the bottom, making it a hypersaline lake.

Surrounding the lake, you can find several trails, ideal for hour-long walks through dry forest fields where you will appreciate numerous desert plant species as well as the various kinds of cactus abound in the place.

FAUNA Su fauna es muy diversa e interesante, especialmente reptiles y aves.

Entre las aves, una de las más llamativas es el flamenco (Phoenicopterus). Entre los reptiles están las dos especies de iguanas: la Iguana Rinoceronte (Cyclura cornuta) y la Iguana de Ricord (Cyclura ricordi).

Los visitantes pueden observar también cocodrilos americanos (Crocodylus acutus) cuya población en el lago es una de las mayores del mundo en estado silvestre. Es una especie en peligro de extinción en el país, pues solo queda la población existente en ese área.

FAUNA The fauna of the area is interesting and diverse, filled mostly with reptiles and birds. One of the most striking birds in the area is the flamingo (Phoenicopterus) and among the reptiles, you will find two main species: the Rhinoceros Iguana (Cyclura cornuta) and the Ricord’s Iguana (Cyclura ricordi).

Visitors will also be able to see a population of American Crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) in the lake, one of the largest in the world, in its wild state. These are endangered species in the country, and the area offers a safe haven for the only existing population.

FLORA La vegetación de los alrededores y de las islas son típicas de bosque seco, excepto en algunos lugares en que los manglares abundan.

Las cactáceas son comunes al igual que el guayacán (Guaiacum officinale), el bayahonda o el cambrón (Prosopis juliflora) entre otros.

Una especie importante es la saona (Ziziphus rignoni) ya que sus frutos son comidos por las iguanas.

FLORA The vegetation surrounding the lake and the islands are typical of a dry forest, except in some locations where mangroves are common.

Cacti are common, as are the lignum vitas (Guaiacums; Guaiacum officinale), buckthorns or bayahondas (Prosopis juliflora) among others. Another important specie is the Saône (Ziziphus rignoni), as its fruits are eaten by the iguanas.

Iguana Rinoceronte / Rhinoceros Iguana

LA ISLA CABRITOS Es uno de los principales atractivos turísticos donde se accede mediante embarcaciones de la zona.

Se caracteriza por tener el único bosque seco hiperxerofítico que existe bajo el nivel del mar en el continente americano. La parte más alta de la Isla Cabritos está a 5 metros bajo el nivel del mar. En la isla, existen una serie de senderos que conducen a los lugares perfectos para observar los cocodrilos, las iguanas y los arrecifes fósiles.

Es recomendable visitar la exposición sobre la historia natural de la isla.

LAS CARITAS Se cree que las Cuevas de las Caritas del lago Enriquillo fueron un refugio natural para los grupos preagrícolas, primeros pobladores de la isla. Los numerosos petroglifos son el testimonio de su paso por estas cuevas.

Para visitar el lago Enriquillo, es recomendable que los visitantes lleven zapatos cómodos para caminar, repelente, protector solar, sombrero o gorra, toallas, traje de baño y botellas de agua para hidratarse.

GOAT ISLAND (ISLA CABRITOS) It is one of the main tourist attractions in the area, characterized by having the only existing dry forest of hyper xerophytes under the sea level in the Americas. The highest part of the island is located 5 meters under sea level. On the island, there are a number of trails set out for visitors, which lead to the sites to see crocodiles, iguanas and fossil reefs.

There is also a visitor’s Center, accessed by boats, available in the area, with an exhibit on the natural history of the island.

LAS CARITAS (“THE FACES”) It is believed that the caves of “Las Caritas” in Lake Enriquillo served as a haven for pre-agricultural groups, early settlers of the islands.

The numerous petroglyphs bear witness of their passage through these caves.

To visit Lake Enriquillo, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. You may also bring insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, a towel, a swimsuit and water bottles for hydration.

MISTERIOSO FENÓMENO Desde hace un par de años, el lago Enriquillo ha aumentado considerablemente su margen, al punto de anegar algunas comunidades cercanas a las orillas y dejando a otras aisladas.

Este fenómeno, está siendo objeto de estudio por parte de especialistas sin que todavía lleguen a ninguna conclusión. Entre las teorías más aceptadas está el aumento del caudal del río Yaque del Sur, uno de los afluentes del lago. Muchas de las familias que antes se dedicaban a la ganadería sufren un proceso de reconversión productiva, al ver sus terrenos inundados, se dedican a otras actividades. A pesar del extraño fenómeno, no representa riesgo alguno para los visitantes de la zona; es un lugar que guarda los encantos de los caprichos de la naturaleza.

A MYSTERIOUS PHENOMENON For a couple of years now, Lake Enriquillo has considerably increased its margins to the point of drowning some communities near its edges and leaving others isolated.

Specialists are currently studying this phenomenon but a conclusion is yet to be reached. Among the most accepted theories is the increased flow of river Yaque Del Sur, a tributary to the lake.

Many of the families mainly dedicated to livestock production are suffering a productive reconversion process; seeing their lands flooded, they have to engage in other activities.

Peter Lorenz comenzó a sumergirse en las aguas del Océano Indico cuando apenas contaba con 20 años. Peter Lorenz plunged himself into the waters of the Indian Ocean when he was barely 20yrs old; it’s been 25 yrs and what started out as a juvenile experience has become his main passion. PARQUE NACIONAL SUBMARINO LA CALETA Allí, los buzos pueden encontrar los naufragios “Capitán Alsina”, “El Limón” y el afamado “Hickory”. Hundido intacto en 1986 a una profundidad máxima de 20 metros, posee una extraordinaria cobertura de esponjas y crecimientos de corales incrustantes, dejando ver una profusión de vivas tonalidades de rojos, naranjas y amarillos.

El Hickory perteneció a Tracy Bowden, un buscador de tesoros que encontró entre otros navíos “El Concepción”, una embarcación española que se hundió en 1641 con cientos de tesoros.

En el lugar llamado Próximamente, se sumará al parque La Caleta, el primer Museo Submarino de Salas Temáticas del país, que contará con esculturas sumergidas y se compondrá por varias áreas, entre ellas, una indígena y otra religiosa, y cada una tendrá los objetos alusivos a sus nombres.

LA CALETA UNDERWATER NATIONAL PARK In here, divers can find the shipwrecks “Capitán Alsina” (Alsina Captain), “El Limón” (The Lemon) and the famous “Hickory”. Sunken intact in 1986 to a maximum depth of 20 meters, it holds an extraordinary coverage of sponges and encrusting coral developments, showing a profusion of vivid tones of reds, orange and yellows. The Hickory belonged to Tracy Bowden, a treasure seeker that found, among other ships, “La Concepcion” (The Conception), a Spanish vessel that sank in 1641 with hundreds of treasures. In a location to be named in the future, La Caleta will also have the first themed underwater museum in the country, with submerged sculptures, divided into several areas such as an indigenous and a religious one, each showing objects alluding to their name and subjects.

IN THE EAST Parque Nacional del Este (East’s National Park), protected coasts with calm and clear waters. This is the area with the most potential to become the top diving destination in the Dominican Republic. There are many diving sites, close to the hotels, in shallow reefs and the ship “St. George”, the largest to have ever sunk in Dominican waters, about 266’ feet long, and in which you can find barracudas, moray eels, mackerels and groupers amongst other species. ISLA CATALINA Tiene la Pared que va desde 5 a 40 metros de profundidad, posee grandes esponjas y gorgonias colgando de la pared. Como segundo buceo, está el Acuario o Los Jardines con una profundidad de 10 metros y poblado de cabezas de coral habitadas por muchos peces juveniles y crustáceos de todo tipo, lo que lo situa, en un sitio perfecto para practicar el snorkel.

ISLA CATALINITA Es una pequeña isla donde las condiciones del mar pueden ser bastante peculiares ya que allí se funden el Océano Atlántico y el Mar Caribe; apropiada para buzos mas avanzados, se encuentra situada cerca de isla Saona, pudiendo bucear con mantas raya, peces león o incluso delfines en puntos concretos.

CATALINITA ISLAND Is a small island where the sea conditions can be quite peculiar, as this is where the Atlantic Ocean merges with the Caribbean Sea; suitable for advance divers, it is located near Saona Island, and you can dive with stingrays, lionfish or even dolphins at particular points.

CATALINA ISLAND Catalina Island has The Wall, that ranges from 5 to 40 meters deep, with large sponges and gorgonians (sea fans) hanging from the wall. As a secondary dive, you have the Aquarium or Los Jardines (The Gardens), located about 10 meters deep and populated with coral heads inhabited by many young fish and crustaceans of all kinds, making it a perfect spot for snorkeling.

VITILLA: UN JUEGO DEL QUE NACEN LAS ESTRELLAS VITILLA: A GAME FROM WHICH STARS ARE BORN l popular juego callejero “la vitilla” desempeña un gran papel en la formación y desarrollo de los más importantes jugadores de béisbol dominicano.

Hay un factor común que ha caracterizado a los grandes jugadores, tanto los de las Grandes Ligas (MLB) como los que juegan en el campeonato nacional: los limitados recursos económicos con los que crecieron.

A falta de guantillas, bates o bolas, la vitilla fue la forma con la que los “fiebres” podían quitarse las ganas de batear y así, sustituyeron los implementos originales del béisbol, por elementos comunes que hay en cualquier hogar. Para este juego se necesita una “tapa” de botellón de agua (llamado vitilla) que desempeña el papel de la pelota en el béisbol; y un “palo” de escoba como bate. Requiere una gran destreza de bateo ya que las “tapas” pueden tornarse difíciles a la hora del “picheo”. La vitilla ha sido objeto de atención de muchas publicaciones internacionales por la importancia que tiene en el desarrollo de las habilidades de los beisbolistas.

At the beginning, the game was only practiced by low-end groups, but over time it has evolved and is now a game that knows no social boundaries, even professional players play vitilla to better their skills.

At first, vitillas were very different from what they are today.

Las tapas que se usaban eran muy frágiles y para que estas tuvieran una mayor fuerza al ser lanzadas, los jugadores unían dos tapas y las amarraban con un alambre, así, estas tenían una mayor eficiencia y llegaban hasta el área de bateo sin ninguna dificultad. En la actualidad, existen vitillas especiales para el juego.

Lacking mitts, bats or balls, Vitilla was the way the ‘feverish’ could take off the urge to bat and thus, replaced the original elements of baseball with common household items. For this game, you need a large bottletop, the lid of a large water bottle (called vitilla), that would play the role of the ball in baseball, and a broom’s stick to use as a bat.

The game requires great batting skills, since these lids can turn difficult at pitching time. The game of Vitilla has been the object of attention of many international publications due to its importance in developing the skills of baseball players.

This game was played generally until it became a tradition that now has turned into a national championship.

The game was developed in the late ‘90s in the slums of Santo Domingo. It became increasingly popular in the following decade and quickly spread throughout the island. In 2008, the energy drink brand Red Bull, became the first company to sponsor a national event that brought together 500 teams.

En la mayoría de los casos, no se juega con un árbitro, como se hace en el béisbol; pero los strikes son catalogados como tales en la vitilla…si no le pegaste, no vale. Los equipos se conforman dependiendo de las habilidades de los jugadores, dándoles a estos plena libertad de organización, pero en general, se unen en grupos de tres.

Quizás, las habilidades que se desarrollan al practicar este juego, son el secreto del porqué los dominicanos están entre los mejores jugadores de beisbol de todo el mundo.

RULES OF THE GAME The rules are similar to those of baseball, with a few other changes. In most cases, it is not played with a referee, as in baseball; but strikes are catalogued as such in vitilla: if you did not hit it, it does not count.

Teams are formed depending on the player’s intentions, giving these the freedom to organize them whichever way they wish, but mostly there are three players per team.

NAVIDAD AL RITMO DEL “CABALLO” CHRISTMAS AT THE “HORSE’S” RHYTHM in los merengues de Ventura, la navidad no es navidad. Así de tajante describen muchos dominicanos al que se conoce como “El Caballo Mayor”. Y es que, Johnny Ventura ha puesto a bailar a este país durante más de 40 años y a lo largo de más de 100 producciones discográficas.

Para muchos, Ventura fue quien modernizó el ritmo merengue al introducir saxofones, trompetas, piano, drums, efectos electrónicos y timbales. Asimismo, incorporó elementos de otros ritmos, pero sin perder la esencia y los colores naturales del merengue. Lo volvió un ritmo más rápido y movido. Su cómplice en este nuevo experimento fue El Combo Show, un nombre que hacía referencia a un grupo pequeño de músicos, que brindaban un espectáculo visual mientras estaban en escena, algo muy novedoso nunca visto en los años 50.

El Combo Show de Johnny Ventura fue declarado en 9 ocasiones, Combo del Año, por la prestigiosa revista norteamericana Record World. Tiene en su haber, más de 4,800 placas y reconocimientos otorgados por diferentes entidades públicas y privadas del mundo.

Es, además, conocido por ser un gran compositor y arreglista.

Al menos el 70% de la música que interpreta es de su autoría. Ventura también destacó en diversos festivales internacionales: fue el Rey de la Calle 8 en Miami en 1987; en los carnavales de Barranquilla, Colombia, ganó 4 Congos de Oro y fue el primer artista dominicano en conquistar la codiciada Antorcha de Plata, que otorga el clamor popular del público que asiste al festival de Viñas del Mar en Chile.

En República Dominicana, ha ganado todos los premios que se entregan a los artistas y forma parte del exclusivo grupo que ha recibido El Soberano, el más alto galardón que otorga la Asociación de Cronistas de Arte.

Without Ventura’s merengue, Christmas is not Christmas. This is how sharply many Dominicans describe the man known as “El Caballo Mayor” The Chief Horse). Johnny Ventura has made this country dance for over 40 years and throughout over 100 music productions.

For many, Ventura modernized the rhythm of merengue by introducing saxophones, trumpets, piano, drums, electric effects and om-tom drums. Moreover, he added elements from other rhythms, without losing the essence and natural colors of merengue. He made it a moving, fast-paced rhythm. His accomplice in this new experiment was The Combo Show, a name that references a small group of musicians that gave a visual spectacle while on scene, a neverbefore-seen novelty in the ‘50s. Johnny Ventura’s Combo Show was declared Combo of the year on 9 occasions by the prestigious U.S. magazine Record World. He earned over 4,800 plaques and awards granted by various public and private entities in the world. He is also known for being a great composer and arranger. At least 70% of the music he plays is of his own authorship.

Ventura was also the highlight of several international festivals: he was ‘Rey de la Calle 8’ (King of the 8th Street) in Miami in 1987; he won 4 Golden Congos at the Baranquilla Carnival, in Colombia; and he was the first Dominican artist to win the coveted Silver Torch, granted by popular uproar, at the International Song Festival of Viña del Mar, in Chile. In the Dominican Republic, he has won every prize awarded to artists and is part of the exclusive group of those who have been awarded El Soberano (The Sovereign), the highest award given by the national Association of Art Critics.

UN CLÁSICO EN NAVIDAD Salsa pa tu lechón….ese es el nombre de uno de los discos grabados en 1973, que contienen clásicos de la época de navidad como “Año nuevo”, “Noche buena otra vez” y “Cantares de Navidad”.

Y así, empezó una tradición que ya reúne más de 33 temas dedicados a esta época del año. Entre los que se han convertido en un emblema para fin de año son: “Rabito del lechón”, “El Vecino”, “Triste navidad” y “Ley Seca”. Estos últimos, son una muestra de que Ventura ha sabido interpretar el sentimiento de las personas durante fin de año.

Su última producción en esta línea, “Volvió la Navidad” grabada en 2009, un disco que fue nominado a un premio Grammy y donde además participan reconocidos artistas dominicanos.

No hay duda de que Johnny Ventura y su ritmo se han convertido en icono de las fiestas de fin de año en toda República Dominicana y el Caribe.

A CHRISTMAS CLASSIC Salsa pa’ tu lechón (Salsa for your pig) is the name of one of his 1973 records containing Christmas season classics such as “Año Nuevo” (New Year); “Nochebuena otra vez” and “Cantares de Navidad”. Thus began a tradition that brings together over 33 songs dedicated to this time of the year. Amongst those that have become emblematic to the end-of-year holidays are: “Rabito del lechón”; “El Vecino”; “Triste Navidad”and “Ley Seca”. Palmera Pictures, además de tener ya previstas algunas colaboraciones a nivel internacional, mantiene su compromiso con el Festival de cine global dominicano en su quinta edición, teniendo previsto proyectar los filmes “Real Steel” producida por Steven Spielberg y dirigida por Shawn Levy y “Tower Hesit” de Brett Ratner.
