Ancient bonds

Your Excellency, could you kindly give our readers a brief on your political career?

Well, I have quite an extensive political career with almost 33 years of service having joined the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in June, 1990. I started my posts outside Egypt, working as the Attaché and Third Secretary in Burundi from 1993 to 1996. Thereafter, I had a posting in Brazil as a Vice Consul General in Rio de Janeiro between 1998 and 2002.

Following these postings, I was the Councillor and Deputy Head of Mission of our embassy here in Bahrain between 2003 and 2007. After that, I was posted to the United Kingdom working as a Plenipotentiary, part of the Egyptian Embassy in London, and the Head of the Political section between 2008 and 2011.

Regarding my ambassadorial roles, I was appointed as the Ambassador to Mexico between 2013 and 2017. I was appointed the Ambassador to Bahrain from November 2019

until the end of this year – my second posting in the Kingdom. These posts were completing my career abroad, on the other hand I’d worked in various sectors starting with the North America sector, Asian sector and Consular sector. I was then in the Human Resources and the Inspection division at our ministry. Following this, I was the Deputy Secretary General of the Egyptian Agency for Development. And the final position, which I assumed in Cairo just before coming to Bahrain, was the Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for Financial Affairs.

How did you feel coming back to Bahrain?

My family and I were very happy because it was a fruitful post previously. Our second son was even born in Bahrain. So, we were happy and we still are, because we admire Bahrain’s leadership, its people, the generosity, the friendly atmosphere and the warm and welcoming nature of all its people. It’s easy, I think, for any diplomat, especially for an Egyptian diplomat, to work in a welcoming country like Bahrain.

What

can you tell us about diplomatic relations between Bahrain and Egypt?

The relations between both countries was formally established in the early 1970s. We celebrated the Golden Jubilee milestone a few months ago but the relations go much further than that. At the beginning of the 20th century, Bahrain was one of the first Arab countries that started to establish academic and education sectors in a systematic and institutional manner. We are proud that we contributed efforts in order to establish the first two schools for boys and girls.

There are also cultural connections and links between the leadership here and a lot of families in Egypt, even before the revolution in 1952 and after. Political relations are extremely good between both leaderships, and they have their own direct channels of communication. As an embassy, here as well as the Bahraini Embassy in Cairo, we constantly strive to build on and improve these relations for the betterment of both countries’ economies.

www.bahrainthismonth.com 18 June 2023 interview
Egyptian Ambassador to Bahrain, HE Yasser Mohammed Ahmed Shaban, speaks to Farah Baig about being back in the Kingdom, his extensive career and Bahrain’s longstanding ties to Egypt.

What are the key sectors that Egyptian nationals are involved in here in Bahrain?

Egyptians work in various fields in the Kingdom of Bahrain. We have teachers, university professors, lawyers, legal advisors, physicians, pharmacists and bankers too. We also have a new group of investors.

In fact, there have been significant growth measures in terms of trade during the past three years. By the end of 2019, the balance sheet was around USD500 million, and now it is USD821 million. We aim to reach USD1 billion by the end of 2024. Bahrain exports aluminum, petro-chemicals and iron pellets to Egypt and we export ceramics, marble, medicines, dairy, fruits and vegetables among other products, to the Kingdom.

Having recently visited Egypt, I can see why it is such a popular tourist destination. How popular is Egypt among local and expatriate travellers residing in Bahrain?

I think Egypt is one of the first destinations for Bahraini brothers and sisters. Whether through education, marriage or other ties, our citizens are connected, and so we have

almost 25,000 travelers visiting each year. We are looking forward to doubling it, and welcoming more and more visitors. We are also working with the Ministry of Tourism and look forward to having more tourists from Egypt to Bahrain whether Bahrain is their destination or while en route to Dubai.

I welcome all of our sisters and brothers, locals and expatriates to visit Egypt. We have highly diverse tourist destinations including beaches, countryside, the Sahara and cultural destinations with monuments.

What can you tell us about the role of cultural exchange between the two countries?

This is one of the mega sectors of cooperation between both countries because we have been a part of the cultural process, movement and achievements of Bahrain for decades. We actively participate in cultural events in Bahrain and have a legal framework organised by our countries to facilitate these activities.

KEEPING THE KINGDOM SAFE

Dr Mariam Al-Jalahma is one of the most important people in Bahrain’s medical sphere, achieving award-winning success in her role as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Regularity Authority (NHRA) and as a Member of the National Medical Taskforce for Combatting the Coronavirus (COVID-19). She spoke to Bahrain This Month to discuss her tremendous achievement, the NHRA’s postpandemic strategy and the general state of the health industry in the Kingdom.

You recently won a prestigious award, please can you tell us more about that and how proud you feel?

The Nelson Mandela Prize for Health Promotion was established in 2019 at the initiative of the Ministers of Health of the Member States of the African Region. It is awarded to persons, institutions and governmental or non-governmental organisations who have made a significant contribution to the promotion of health. The award is intended to reward work that has extended beyond the call of normal duties and is not just a recognition of a professional’s hard work, but is also a testament to the dedication and passion for making a positive impact in the world. Throughout my 37 years of working in the health sector, whether as a physician, manager or leader, and during my voluntary work with society, health promotion has always been at the heart of everything I do, and I must say that it has been a rewarding experience. Seeing people adopt healthy lifestyles and make positive life changes is a testament to the effectiveness of health promotion in bringing about positive change.

What does the NHRA have as strategic aims to achieve for 2023 and then for the next five years?

We aim to achieve our vision through three strategic goals:

1. A regulated and accountable healthcare sector. Ensuring that all healthcare facility professionals, medicines and medical devices registered in the Kingdom of Bahrain meet the required licensing standards.

2. Safe and trusted health services. Through continuous assessment of the quality of health services provided to ensure compliance with accreditation standards and ensure the safety of medicine and medical devices used in the health sector and safety of clinical research.

3. Protected health rights. By preserving

interview

patients’ rights and safety, we will act to protect the rights and the safety of all people using healthcare facilities.

Furthermore, we had two major operational aims to achieve as a priority and we have achieved the first one already. That is, we wanted to be recognised internationally and this year we received it from the International Society for Quality in Healthcare. This ‘ISQua’ means that our accreditation standards stand beside other international bodies such as the Canadian, American and Australian ones.

Our second goal, digital transformation, remains a major operational goal to achieve. In 2022 we dedicated all our efforts to maintain and improve the developed licensing systems ‘Mehan’ for professional licensing, ‘Munshaat’ for facilities licensing, and initiated a new system ‘Ajheza’ for medical device registration. Finally, we successfully implemented the inspection phone app used by the NHRA. We are looking forward to automating all our other services during the next two years.

Has the NHRA got an effective mechanism for dealing with medical malpractice and other problems that arise in Bahrain?

The Kingdom of Bahrain has clear legislation in place to deal with medical errors, and the internal policies and procedures at the NHRA are well defined to deal with such incidents. Our aim is to protect the patient and make professionals aware of malpractice and how to avoid them. For investigating such incidents we have issued two guidelines, one for patients about complaints and the second for the physicians to be aware of their rights and responsibilities. Investigating malpractice is done through independent committees of high calibre cooperating with the NHRA.

Is the number of complaints on the rise as the medical industry evolves and develops in Bahrain?

There is a rise in complaints as patients become more aware of the NHRA’s role, but there is a decline in the percentage of medical errors identified. For example, there was a drop in the medical errors rate from 23.6 percent in 2020 to 17 percent in 2023.

Can you give a breakdown of the areas of the medical industry with the most complaints?

As per the latest 2023 NHRA data, dentistry was the highest in complaints followed by dermatology.

Is the NHRA regulating medical equipment and the use thereof, including training requirements and calibration of standards?

Medical Devices Regulation within the NHRA grants all suppliers an approval to import medical devices based on international standards.

As medical devices represent a vast part of patient care, we work to protect the public and promote quality and patient safety by setting appropriate guidelines and policies in-line with international best practices. This is done by providing a harmonised regulatory system to prevent the entrance of ineffective or unsafe devices to Bahrain.

As the ‘watchdog’ of the medical industry which covers a vast area and many fields –can you tell us what the NHRA has as its number one priority in terms of regulation?

I would rather the NHRA be called the guardian angel! To us, our number one priority is always patient safety. As our vision clearly states: safe and high-quality healthcare services; everything we regulate is done to achieve this vision.

Do you have management succession plans in place to ensure development, future

growth and to prevent loss of skill and experience in the NHRA?

We have put in place a succession plan and training for our staff. Not only that, but we utilise experts who have retired or work in government and private facilities as our contracted surveyors to carry out the accreditation evaluation.

Is there anything else you wish to add?

I would like to emphasise that NHRA’s mission is to regulate the provision of healthcare in the Kingdom of Bahrain to ensure high efficiency, safety and effectiveness in delivering health services. This includes both the government and the private sector, based on the best scientific principles and health practice standards accredited in the Kingdom and we are committed to implement this because patient safety is our driving force.

FOCUSING ON HEALTH

June is a month packed with health observances that can bring a significant impact to people’s lives and healthcare in the Kingdom. Bahrain This Month looks at these special days and how the Ministry of Health has grown to support these occasions.

Bahrain’s healthcare system has come a long way in recent years, and this is largely thanks to the government’s continued investment in the sector. The island has a range of public hospitals that provide top-quality healthcare services to its citizens. One of the most prominent of these hospitals is the Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC). The SMC is the largest public hospital in Bahrain and is considered one of the most modern and advanced healthcare facilities in the region. The hospital offers a wide range of medical services including emergency services, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, surgery and much more.

Another public hospital worth mentioning is the King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH). It is affiliated with the Bahrain Defence Force and is located in the Al-Sayh area of Bahrain.

National Cancer Survivors Day

JUNE 6

KHUH provides specialised medical services, including cardiac care, neurology and oncology. It is considered one of the leading healthcare facilities in Bahrain, and many people travel from other parts of the region to receive treatment here.

The country has one of the highest life expectancies in the world, which is a testament to the quality of healthcare services available in Bahrain.

In addition to public hospitals, the country also has a thriving private healthcare sector that provides a wide range of medical services to its citizens.

The healthcare system in Bahrain has also embraced new technologies in recent years.

For example, many hospitals now use electronic health records to manage patient information more efficiently. The government has also launched a number of initiatives to promote healthy living among citizens, such as programmes to encourage exercise and healthy eating.

With this year’s focus on healthcare, the Ministry of Health, healthcare organisations and non-profit groups are joining hands to promote public health and create awareness around critical health issues.

The National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD) is a worldwide observance that promotes a message of hope and support for those living with cancer. NCSD brings awareness to the struggles faced by cancer survivors, who bravely overcome their condition through early detection and timely treatment. This year’s theme is ‘Sharing Knowledge, Sharing Hope,’ which promotes support networks and fosters connections among cancer survivors, their caregivers and healthcare professionals.

World Brain Tumour Day

JUNE 8

World Brain Tumour Day is an annual observance that raises awareness about one of the deadliest forms of cancer affecting the human brain. This special day, celebrated every June 8, aims to educate the public about the warning signs, diagnosis, and treatment of brain tumours, as well as to provide support to patients and their families.

Global Men’s Health Week

JUNE 14-20

Global Men’s Health Week is a worldwide observance aimed at improving men’s health by promoting health awareness and access to essential medical services. Men often tend to neglect their health needs and do not prioritise preventive healthcare, leading to a rise in mortality rates among men globally. The goal of Global Men’s Health Week is to break this cycle of neglect by promoting healthy habits such as regular checkups and healthy living. As Bahrain continues to expand its healthcare infrastructure, this observance comes as a reminder to men to prioritise their health needs and access timely healthcare services.

World Blood Donor Day

JUNE 14

World Blood Donor Day is an annual observance to recognise the lifesaving gift of blood donation and to raise awareness about the need for safe blood and blood products. Blood transfusions are crucial in treating life-threatening conditions, and a reliable supply of blood products is essential for Bahrain’s healthcare infrastructure. The day serves as a reminder for people to donate blood and raise awareness about the importance of regular blood donations.

World Autistic Pride Day

JUNE 18

World Autistic Pride Day is an international celebration that takes place every year on June 18. It is a day to raise awareness about autism and celebrate the strengths and unique qualities of individuals on the autism spectrum. The celebration was initiated by the autistic community and is now celebrated worldwide. It is an opportunity to educate others about autism, combat stigmas and promote understanding. On this day, people on the autism spectrum and their allies come together to share stories, promote self-advocacy, and promote inclusion.

World Vitiligo Day

JUNE 25

World Vitiligo Day is an international observance dedicated to raising awareness of vitiligo, a skin condition that causes a loss of pigment. Vitiligo affects people of all ages, races and genders, and can lead to psychological distress and discrimination. This observance highlights the importance of mental health in people living with chronic health conditions and the need to create a supportive environment for all.

Animals In Need

The Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) is facing the biggest crisis in its history.

Kristian Harrison spoke to BSPCA Chairman, Mahmood Faraj, about the organisation’s struggles and how more than four decades of supporting the Kingdom’s animals could be coming to an end without urgent action.

In1979, a small group of committed and passionate animal lovers established the BSPCA as a humane, charitable, non-profit organisation dedicated to the welfare of animals.

For the last 44 years, tens of thousands of animals have been saved, cared for and loved by the society’s dedicated group of volunteers and staff. However, it is now in dire need. Despite operating as a charity, it receives no official funding whatsoever and depends on the generosity of the public for its funds as well as monies generated by the Thrift Shop in Budaiya.

Mr Faraj, who has been the Chairman since 2010, believes that a combination of factors has led to the current financial crisis.

“Firstly, the Covid-19 pandemic hampered us immensely,” he explains. “We had to close our Animal Welfare Centre in Askar to all but a select few staff, and our Thrift Shop closed for an extended period of time.

“Obviously this meant that we could not generate income and in an even crueller twist of fate, the large number of expats who left Bahrain during Covid could not donate a lot of their items when they left. Of course, we couldn’t hold our regular fundraisers for a long time either.

“Coupled with this is the steep rise in oil, electricity and water prices in the last few years. We are regulated by the Ministry of

Labour and Social Development yet we are under the auspices of the Non-Government Organisations department so we receive zero funding from the government. Not only that, we are charged commercial rates the same as large international corporations, yet we are not a commercial entity. How is this fair?”

Another issue is fewer adoptions. In 2019, more than 200 animals were adopted, yet last year it was half that. Accordingly, there are now more than 200 animals at the Rescue Centre and the number is growing, which feeds into

the concurrent issue of increased utility prices with water especially being required in higher amounts.

“The Rescue Centre is open 24 hours a day,” Mr Faraj explains. “That also means we need some permanent staff alongside our amazing volunteers. We currently have nine, two of whom are Bahraini, but if we don’t receive urgent funds within the next couple of months we will be in big trouble and have to cut staff.

“Without the AWC, hundreds of needy animals would be left without a home or other support. We desperately hope it does not come to that but I urge the public to do whatever they can, whether that’s donations to the shelter or the Thrift Shop. Of course, one of the best options is adoption and we offer it free to good homes for animals that have been in our care for more than two years. All of our animals have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and assessed for their physical and mental health.

“The BSPCA and its work is buried deep in my heart, it’s been a huge part of my life for so long. I hope to continue it for a long time to come, but we need help.”

A HELPING HAND

The Bahrain Animal Rescue Centre (BARC) is the largest no-kill shelter in the Kingdom of Bahrain, with a mission to save local dogs and cats that are victims of abuse, abandonment or homelessness. Farrah Saville chats to them about their thankless work and why they need all the help they can get.

agalag, a dog park in Saar, is the perfect spot to meet BARC volunteers, Soha Al Awadhi, Muna Al Daaysi and Alexis Khoshaba, just three of the nine volunteers currently looking after 300 dogs and 100 cats. Their efforts are relentless as they try to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abandoned pets all across Bahrain.

interview

Muna explains: “BARC began with Tony Waters as just a man in his villa, finding injured dogs and cats on the street and just taking them in. The numbers then grew and he developed his facility a bit more to accommodate the increasing numbers. ‘Tony the Dogfather’ began, then it became the Marine Animal Rescue Centre and it’s just a continuation of his mission really, to rescue rehabilitate and rehome.”

The transition to manage the centre after Tony’s passing was well-handled by the dedicated volunteers who understood the legacy he had created. She said: “When you have a group of people with the same mission and the same outcome, it will be a smooth transition because we all want the same thing. I would say probably the most difficult part of it was obviously losing a man of that influence and footprint in this field. But also, we had to move locations with 300 dogs and 150 cats and I’d say that was a bit more challenging.”

According to reports posted by the Khaleej Times, the allure of pure and mixed-bred puppies seems to outweigh the responsibilities that come with owning a pet long-term. Soha, who has been volunteering at the centre for two years, says there needs to be a lot more education around pet ownership.

“I don’t want to generalise, but from what I’ve seen, a lot of people take in animals, not as pets or as a longterm commitment. So, they’re a commodity to be bought, sold, traded and eventually dumped. There are no laws around what happens if you dump an animal.

importance of microchipping them. There is not even a central database for microchipping, so they’re left to the mercy of the weather.”

The running costs of BARC are high with the centre relying heavily on donations to meet the needs of the animals. For example, volunteers explain that the centre runs on a generator at BD850 per month, this excludes the diesel it takes every few days to fuel the generator. Additionally, the shelter relies on donations for vet and tick medication, neutering and spaying, and dry food and with 300 dogs and 100 cats it’s currently costing BD65 per day to feed the animals.

It’s a dire situation but not all hope is lost. Alexis, another volunteer who took in an abandoned pitbull, explains that the joy of seeing dogs being rehomed overseas, adopted and fostered is not the only reward but seeing the dogs thrive in

How can you help?

loving environments is what makes the heavy journey of volunteering somewhat easier. She says: “Just seeing the difference in these dogs from when we find them to how they are now is what it’s all about. Seeing the dogs get love, it transforms their lives.”

LOVE OF LEBANON

Lebanese cuisine is one of the most diverse in the region, with a mixture of both Middle Eastern and Mediterranean influences. The new Tarbouesh outlet in Juffair promises an authentic experience, so Kristian Harrison donned his felt hat and checked it out.

Located at the new Seven Hotel, the quaint restaurant has an extensive menu that will appeal to foodies everywhere, with vegetarians, meat lovers and pescetarians all catered for. Featuring gorgeous views of the sea looking across towards Muharraq and Hidd, Tarbouesh is a beautiful location with decoration that merges the classical and the contemporary.

It’s a picturesque scene that deserves to be enjoyed by all, so the long, narrow design of the restaurant means you’ll always get a table which delights, whilst also offering a look into the kitchen where the top chefs craft their delicacies in full view. The divine smells drifting through had us salivating before we even had a chance to sit down!

First up were the appetisers, a selection of cold mezzeh including Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, Taboulleh and the masterpiece of the selection, the Mutabal! The latter in particular was some of the best I have tasted in Bahrain, made even better with piping hot bread pulled straight out of the oven.

The stylish takes on the classics we know and love continued with the hot mezzeh, including the exceptionally-spiced Batata Harra, crumbly Kebbeh and crispy Cheese Rolls.

These were complemented by salads packed with a plethora of healthy veggies such as courgette, aubergine, lettuce, tomato and olives.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a traditional Lebanese feast without unleashing the carnivore within me, and the Mixed Grill did not disappoint! The Shish Tawook and Chicken Kebab were tender, juicy and cooked to perfection, with the former packing

enough herbs in to create the distinctive taste but not overpowering the palate as unfortunately happens elsewhere.

The Chicken Shawarma was freshly sliced in the local tradition with a creamy Tahini sauce, and would be the perfect snack if lounging by the nearby pool or if you were a guest in the hotel and felt a little peckish.

One of my favourite meaty delights is Lamb Chops, and I was glad to see that Tarbouesh offered them freshly grilled and with enough meat on the bone to really get your teeth into. I would say that they were lightly too well done for my tastes, but this is a personal preference easily rectified.

After the swathe of platters we were offered, I was completely full and declined dessert, but the menu promises a wide selection including Cheesecakes, Ice Cream, Fruit Platters and more.

No meal is complete without something to wash it down with, and I was impressed with the selection of mocktails to accompany the usual soft drinks, teas and coffees. Selected beverages are also available.

The food, company and views were so fantastic that I heartily recommend it to those looking for a new Lebanese-themed spot to try out. I tip my (fez) hat to Tarbouesh!

attackers trick victims into providing them with the OTP through various methods, such as phishing emails, fake websites or social engineering techniques.

How to avoid it:

Be cautious with any communication or request that asks for your OTP. Legitimate organisations or financial institutions will never ask you to provide your OTP through email, phone or other unsecured channels. Do not share your OTP with anyone and report any suspicious requests or activities to your IT security team in your company or to the relevant authorities immediately.

SHE''''''''' S ELECTRIC

Now that the sound of loud and searing engines of Formula 1 cars pelting around the Bahrain International Circuit has abated for another year, there’s plenty of scope to appreciate the quieter and greener side of motoring life.

So it proved with my test drive of the wonderful, fully-electric Mercedes EQB, the latest electric SUV from the iconic marque boasting advanced technology and value luxury for the environmentally-conscious.

I hadn’t even left the parking space outside the marque’s exclusive dealership Al Haddad Motors’ showroom in Tubli before I knew this would be an experience with a difference.

I’d done my usual routine of sitting in the car for my brief with the friendly marketing team, adjusting the seat and mirrors, having a fiddle with the switches on the dashboard and then cycling through the touch-screen to see what sort of features were available.

Then I pressed the stop/start ignition button, and nothing happened. Of course, silly me had forgotten the deathly quiet of an EV firing up without that familiar roar of an engine!

I soon rectified that, whacking the gear stick into ‘Drive’, I glided out of the car park and out onto the roads in mild wonderment at this magical piece of technology.

There is a certain stigma about electric vehicles which indicate that they have no bite, with some detractors almost having you believe they are powered by a couple of AA batteries and not one capable of 215kW of power and 292 horsepower.

I couldn’t help but laugh at this notion when I hit the highway and put my foot down, with G-forces slamming me back in my seat as an emission-free eruption of acceleration greeted me. There’s certainly no compromise compared

to petrol power when it comes to the EQB, which can broach the typical 0-100kmph gap in just 6.2 seconds. Slip it into Sport mode for an even tighter, grippy drive that corners with a sharpness that belies the car’s weight.

Indeed, green power continues to improve immeasurably, with the EQB equipped with an advanced battery system that provides a range of up to 426km on a single charge. It also has a fast-charging capability, which means that you can charge the battery up to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.

Continuing the eco-friendly theme, the vehicle is made from recycled materials and is carbon neutral, making it an eco-friendly choice for those who want to reduce their footprint.

There’s plenty of space in this seven-seater, with comfortable seats and a plethora of adjustment options complemented by ample cargo room for larger families. The high-quality finish of the leather and soft-touch fabrics breathe luxury, too.

The infotainment system contains all the quirks, gadgets and apps you’d want, while it barely took me a second to ease into Mercedes’ interface and soon had the air conditioning, music and navigation settings dialled up on the intuitive touch screen. I also appreciate the head-up display showing my speed, RPM and remaining battery charge without ever having to divert my gaze from the wheel.

Whilst very modern under the bonnet, the EQB is modest outside of it, with the face of the EQB blanked off with a gloss black finish and a lightbar across the top connecting the headlights. Beyond that, it’s more of a conventional SUV, with large slab sides and a squarer rear end design with some funky tail lights.

It’s certain that with eco-friendly and exceedingly fun cars like the Mercedes EQB available, the future is not that anymore … it’s the present.

BMW LOOKING TO THE FUTURE WITH I7 M70 XDRIVE

With the BMW i7 M70 xDrive, BMW M puts an all-electric performance model at the top end of the new BMW 7 Series model range. It is the most powerful model with an all-electric drive in the overall BMW Group portfolio. With an electric motor on both the front and rear axles, which together generate a maximum system output of 485kW/660bhp, and an M suspension, the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive offers the perfect combination of electric mobility and performance, providing a driving experience that is unique in the luxury segment.

The top model of the new BMW 7 Series accelerates from zero to 100kmph in 3.7 seconds, making it the fastest all-electric BMW model. The top speed is electronically limited to 250kmph.

This new performance record is achieved thanks to an innovation patented by the BMW Group, which uses six excitation coils in the stator of the electric motor instead of the usual three. This allows the electric machine to generate extremely high power in a light and compact design and to provide it continuously up into high speed ranges.

The standard suspension technology of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive includes M specific adaptive two-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling and electronically controlled shock absorbers whose response is optimised thanks to M specific hydraulics. Integral Active Steering and the Executive Drive Pro suspension package including Active Roll Stabilisation with Active Roll Comfort also feature as standard equipment. The package also offers an M sports brake system and 21-inch M light alloy wheels.

KIA SCOOPS DOUBLE

AT

iF DESIGN AWARD 2023

Kia has been awarded two significant accolades at the iF Design Award 2023. The brand’s success in the prestigious ‘Company Branding’ and ‘Shop/Showroom Store Identity’ categories signifies the continued strength and effectiveness of Kia’s creative approach to customer engagement and its competitiveness in global design since the brand relaunch in 2021.

Kia’s ‘Movement that Inspires’ ethos and its ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy sit at the heart of every strand of the brand’s global corporate identity and showroom identity strategies. Combined with models such as the recently revealed EV9 allelectric flagship SUV, they play a pivotal role in accelerating Kia on its rapid transition from a car manufacturer to a sustainable mobility solutions provider.

‘Movement that Inspires’ represents Kia’s determination to create spaces for customers to find value in every moment to become inspired and find more time to bring their ideas to life. Meanwhile, the marque’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy takes inspiration from the contrasts found in nature and humanity, utilising the character of one element to bring out the character of another.

In his new role, Robert will be focusing on consolidating the brand’s leading position in the region and will report directly to Brett Soso, Managing Director – Europe, Middle East and Africa, who is based at the company’s headquarters in Woking, UK.

“I am incredibly proud and excited to be taking up the role of Market Director for the Middle East and Africa,” said Mr Holtshausen. “The MEAF region provides amazing opportunity and I look forward to contributing to, and driving, our continued success in the region.”

THE NEW SERVICE ON THE BLOCK

Very recently, I realised that STC Pay had changed the way it allows users to use its payment systems. With a new app update, there was an automatic bank account linked to my number. Without any application made by me, using STC Pay gave me a free bank account and an IBAN number. My first thought was – that’s a brilliant win-win strategy at play. My second thought was – I need to understand how and why service providers are doing this. That’s when I stumbled upon ‘Payments-As-A-Service’ or PaaS.

PaaS refers to specialised payment-related services like payment engine hosting, reconciliation and settlement, cross-border payments and third-party collections via a cloud platform. These systems allow companies to broaden their services to customers using one single channel. PaaS offers flexibility, the ability to scale up and innovate to a much larger extent than legacy banking and finance systems.

These services are related to two broader services. The first is Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) which offers customisability in infrastructure but requires high levels of technical skills and associated costs. The second is Software as a service (SaaS) wherein the vendor manages all services and functions which are usually preconfigured, with limited customisation. PaaS offers customers a sweet spot between IaaS and SaaS where it provides virtual resources requiring moderate technical skills alongside systems that have the

flexibility to customise and set up operations based on specific needs.

PaaS services are primarily cloud-based and therefore off-site. PaaS vendors provide servers, storage, networking, virtualisation, middleware, the operating system and the runtime. Therefore, their clients (companies) are only responsible for data and applications. This offers an environment where developers can build, compile and run their programmes without worrying about the underlying infrastructure.

Enterprises can leverage simple programming interfaces to introduce new products and financial solutions. With the use of PaaS offerings, these can be directly integrated into the banking technology stacks. This integration makes plugging product and service gaps more efficient. For instance, regional payments provider Tap payments allows for payments across currencies and service providers by using leveraging banking systems and infrastructure across countries.

Globally PaaS revenue is projected to reach US$113.3bn in 2023. A major driver of this growth is that PaaS provides companies with facilities for application and development of services at a fraction of the cost. This is more prominent when compared to establishing these facilities with their own resources. The increasing demand for mobile applications has also contributed to growth.

The PaaS segment is likely to continue expanding in the coming years. This can be

attributed to the fact that companies are increasingly offering multipurpose PaaS solutions rather than the single-purpose solutions that are currently contributing to a major share of the revenue in this segment. It is expected to show an annual growth rate (CAGR 2023-2027) of 16.7 percent, resulting in a market volume of US$210.4bn by 2027. The key players in this segment are Amazon Web Services (36.6 percent) and Microsoft (20.5 percent). In the region, the total estimated revenue was USD780 million. Growth in this segment can also be attributed to the trend of multipurpose PaaS solutions rather than the single-purpose solutions.

The world of payments is complicated and needs a tremendous amount of integration. Every single step in the process that allows users to transact, has the potential to become a business in itself. We needed to be able to make payments from our phone, in came QR code technology, back-end integrated and customer verified systems like BenefitPay, STC Pay, etc. Each of these are fintech ecosystems in themselves. The value chain is wide, deep and complicated waiting for the next idea that can monetise one small sub process and create the next “as-a-service”.

BANKING CHAIRMAN HONOURED

The Bahrain Association of Banks (BAB) recently recognised Dr. Ali Adnan Ibrahim for his exemplary leadership as the Chairman of the Sustainability and Social Responsibility Committee for several years.

Under his guidance, the committee achieved numerous notable accomplishments in the field of sustainability and social responsibility. BAHRAIN FORECASTED TO BE WORLD LEADER

Bahrain is projected to be the world’s leader in consumer adoption of real-time payments, according to the 2023 Prime Time for Real-Time report, published by ACI Worldwide. With consumers and businesses in the Middle East demanding cheaper, faster and more efficient ways to pay, and merchant acceptance of real-time payments on the rise, consumer and business adoption via popular new use cases is heating up.

By 2027, Bahrain citizens are expected to make an average of 83.3 real-time transactions per month, which makes Bahrain the world’s leader, ahead of Brazil, Thailand and its closest regional competitors, Saudi Arabia and UAE. The report highlights that real-time payments are strongly embedded in the everyday lives of consumers and businesses in Bahrain. In 2015,

the Central Bank launched Fawri+, a real-time payments system that sets the standard for instant payments in the region. Today, nearly 60 percent of electronic payments in the country are processed in real time, forecasted to rise to 78.6 percent by 2027. With the support of the Central Bank enabling easier use through digital apps like BenefitPay, real-time payments are helping promote financial inclusion and increase financial stability across the economy, leading to stronger economic growth.

recommendation for regulatory reforms. The Committee also worked closely with Tamkeen to launch a solar financing scheme supported by six banks.

Dr. Ali Adnan’s dedication and expertise have had a significant impact on promoting sustainable finance and social responsibility within the banking sector. The BAB’s recognition of his achievements is a testament to his outstanding contributions and leadership in this important area. In the presence of Association officials, Mr. Adnan Ahmed Yousif, the Chairman of BAB, presented Dr. Ali Adnan with a certificate and a shield of honour during a reception.

Total real-time payment transactions in the country are expected to grow from 276 million in 2022 to 1.3 billion in 2027, representing a compound annual growth rate of 35.5 percent, outpacing any other market in the Gulf.

BOOST TO BAHRAIN BANKS

The Bahrain Association of Banks (BAB) has announced that the newly-implemented judicial orders related to bank accounts, known as the JBOS system, will ensure the swift transmission of judicial orders immediately after they are issued by the judge. This system will contribute to reducing the burden of the accumulation of judicial orders and marks a significant improvement in litigation procedures for financial cases.

The new JBOS system is now fully managed by the Ministry of Justice and has replaced the previous account suspension and cancellation system, known as BUB, which was previously managed by the Central Bank of Bahrain. The system requires banks to respond daily to judicial requests related to funds and their collection in bank accounts. As a result, written electronic judicial letters to banks requesting amounts to be collected are no longer issued.

Business Elite’s ‘40

Under 40’ is a prestigious awards programme and

Mr. Al Kayed outperformed 40 participants who competed with him to win the award, which identifies outstanding young executives and entrepreneurs in global business and creates networking opportunities. Mr. Al Kayed is the current adviser to the chairman of Sevens Holding, a leading company in the field of hospitality, food and beverage in Bahrain, and is responsible for all operations and real estate management of the company including general strategic directions, setting priorities and monitoring asset performance.

Through this, he built an administrative and financial structure for a private contract worth more than $300 million, and reduced annual expenses to maintain financial stability during the pandemic-fuelled recession. The young leader also built and launched a hotel and resort with a 5-star rating in Bahrain demonstrating excellence in stimulating business organisations to take advantage of emerging opportunities.

Commenting on the achievement, Mr Al Kayed said: “It is a great honour to receive this award from a prestigious institution. Thanks are also due to Sevens Holding chairman Shaikh Khalifa bin Rashid Al Khalifa for his continuous support and guidance.”

It also provides information on the amounts that must remain in individuals’ accounts, and it automatically sends an order to cancel the seizure of the amount and debit the individual’s bank account immediately after the bank’s response to the court order.

This system is expected to increase flexibility, transparency, and speed in the overall process of procedures.

Dr. Waheed Al Qassim, CEO of the Bahrain Association of Banks, highlighted the Association’s role as an effective mediator between the Ministry and the banking sector during the testing period of the new system, ensuring that all parties’ requirements were met. He stated that the system is expected to gradually evolve in the interest of all, taking into account all suggestions to ensure the implementation of all provisions smoothly while safeguarding the rights of individuals and banks.

Metallica

72 Seasons

Verdict:

Functional yet formulaic from the metal icons.

What’s the story?

72 Seasons is the 11th studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica. Of the album’s title, frontman James Hetfield stated: “72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is re-enactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry.”

Worth a listen?

Never before has Metallica seemed so comfortable being Metallica, embracing their identity as a collective and letting each member play to their strengths: Lars Ulrich’s drums are pushed forward in the mix, Robert Trujillo roams wild with his bass, Kirk Hammett gets plenty of room to solo, while Hetfield processes all he’s learned in therapy. The album is filled with meditations on mortality and morality, looking back on formative years with clarity, not anger. There are no slow moments, there are no ballads: the entire record barrels forward at an advanced clip and crushing volume. It’s heavy but it’s not grimy or gritty. Metallica are old pros at this point, so they favour clearly articulated production, and they know how to reserve their energy so they play for endurance, not speed; even when this comes close to thrash tempos, the band never threaten to give themselves over to abandon.

FUSE Everything But The Girl

With Fuse, the first EBTG album in 24 years, it’s clear the duo of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt are not interested in dwelling in the past. The taut beats and vibrating bass of marvellous lead single ‘Nothing Left to Lose’ plunk EBTG’s sound firmly into 2023, yet the sparse, clear production makes it unmistakable that Thorn’s voice has roughened up a bit, even since her last solo record. This only adds more emotional weight to her lyrics, which are as thoughtful as ever, yet especially relevant for the 2020s. Fuse contains the most adventurous production EBTG have ever attempted, showing that the duo haven’t lost their touch for pairing up-todate music with relevant, affecting subject matter.

MUDHONEY Plastic Eternity

Great bands adapt to change, and Mudhoney have certainly done that. Plastic Eternity sees the band in solid, engaging form. Mudhoney devote less time to the hard fast tunes and more to the mid-tempo grungy slog they love while using additional instruments to fill out the atmosphere, with bongos, keyboards, and occasional lo-fi electronic buzzing augmenting the dirty guitars on several cuts. This album shows Mudhoney are capable of surprising us (and themselves) 35 years in, and judging from the results, it won’t be the last time they’ll pull that off.

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS

Atum

An ambitiously sprawling rock opera, 2023’s Atum finds Billy Corgan dipping into the sound of pretty much every era of Smashing Pumpkins’ career. For fans keeping track of the concept, the album (presented over three discs) continues the story of Shiny, the main character first introduced on iconic album Mellon Collie, though you’d have to dig pretty deep to pull any strong narrative threads out of the material. Conceptual conceits aside, these are some of the strongest melodic and heartfelt anthems Corgan has written in years. The album runs the gamut of the band’s sonic palette, from shimmering sunburst synths and pummelling acid-rock guitar pyrotechnics to more introspective piano and electronicsaccented balladry.

About Moschino Mad

Moschino Spring 2023 Donna is Creative Director Jeremy Scott’s response to the gloom and issues we’re facing today, and its motive is mood buoyancy. He believes we must be cognizant of what’s happening around us while holding space for joy. Let’s explore the Moschino SS23 collection – a prism of optimism.

“It’s not possible to constantly hold onto crisis. You have to have the love and you have to have the magic. That’s also life.” -Toni Morrison

Models strutting down the runway in Moschino’s SS23 collection were the true vision of happiness. Looks that we can bring to life this summer through their eclectic RTW collection. Bright colours, fun motifs, vibrant animations and a colour palette that grabs your attention.

The symbolic uplift starts with daytime looks to stay afloat. Boxy jackets, sporty dresses and functional skirts feature faux-blow up hearts, a reimagining of the famed Moschino icon. A direct twist on the word 'inflation' then starts to enter the relief, with pool toys, life rafts and life preservers taking shape across suiting, refined daywear, graphic-impact eveningwear and accessories, alike.

A noir jacket and trouser suit boasts inflatable lapels and pocket covers on the former, complete with oral valves for aerating the accents. As the lineup progresses, a touch more formality drifts to the top: A pink blazer and skirt set with floaties at the cuffs, a blow up-collar classic moto jacket paired with a midiskirt, and a patterned column dress complemented by a pool raft stole are all part of the interplay.

In Moschino’s long-standing manner, each piece in Spring holds some wink or trick of the eye, and is layered with double entendre and wit. The inflatables are genuine or faux, signaling questions between illusion or reality (another conceptual adjunct to the complexity of our era). Ultimately, though, it’s about offsetting the negativity – of breaking through the surface into a ray of sunshine, even when the rest of the water is shadowed in grey. That’s where joy may be found.

The right note

The harp brings an element of whimsy and wonder to any occasion. Egyptian harpist Silvia Saad, who is currently living and performing in Bahrain, is the perfect match for this magical instrument. Farrah Saville chats to her about her journey into classical performances.

Silvia Saad meets the Bahrain This Month team at the Gulf Hotel’s lobby area for an interview and shoot. Immediately, all eyes are on this absolute stunner. She is wearing a floral, almost fairytale-like dress; her long flowing Rapunzelesque hair and gentle demeanour has heads turning and rightfully so. On her shoulder is a giant purple bag, in it the most beautiful harp.

Silvia, who was originally born in Egypt, has a Master’s degree in the harp instrument and is currently living as a performer for luxury events in Bahrain. She is also a member of the Bahrain Philharmonic Orchestra and has been playing the harp since she was seven after watching her aunt play the piano.

She says: “After seeing her play, I really wanted to try it. My parents took me to a music conservatory and the teachers said my fingers might be better suited to the

harp and not the piano. They showed me some girls playing on it and when I saw it, I thought it was amazing. It reminded me of a children’s cartoon or story. So I continued my education with the harp and eventually graduated from the conservatory with a Master’s degree in the instrument.”

Silvia has turned her love and mastery of the harp into a business in Bahrain, and she has been booked by clients for luxury events, weddings and hotels. The pride she takes in preparing for her performances through the type of harp she uses, the way she dresses and what type of music she plays, has set her apart.

“Playing the harp is not a hobby,” she explains. “It’s something you study and take seriously. I think it’s the same approach for making a business out of it. I spend a lot of time on Instagram selecting what I want to promote and how I edit my page creatively.

I get some clients who direct message me on Instagram but many come to me while playing at events.”

She explains that clients will book her for other events after seeing her play and also after seeing the amount of time and effort that goes into matching the theme of the event, which includes striking dresses and jewellery, hair and make-up.

Silvia also played with the Bahrain Philharmonic Orchestra, which she describes as a 'wonderful experience'. She says: “It was my first time in Bahrain to have the orchestra playing classical music; you need to listen to your colleagues when playing as part of an orchestra.

“My ultimate dream is to be a very famous artist one day. When people say ‘harpist’, I hope they will say my name as well,” she says with a big smile.

FIGHTING FIT AT 50

After going through an incredibly difficult period and approaching 50, Françoise Salameh believed her future looked bleak. She ultimately got herself fighting fit, both physically and mentally, and sat down with Kristian Harrison to discuss her journey.

In 2017, Françoise moved to Bahrain and reinvented herself. Using her background in communications, public relations and journalism, the native Lebanese created an interview platform on Instagram which attracted global icons including Grammy Award winners, National Geographic photographers, Netflix documentary personalities and more. The page, @unspoken.untoldstories, was thriving, and Françoise was enjoying her life in the Kingdom. Then, in October 2020, tragedy struck. She lost her father, Hadi, to a sudden illness. Seemingly completely healthy except for a small ulcer, it suddenly burst and within 48 hours he was gone.

Françoise pinpoints this as the moment her depression began as the grief overwhelmed her, but it was soon to become worse. In the summer of that year, her sister, Florence, was diagnosed with lung cancer and within six months, she also passed away too in January 2022.

“I was stuck in a dark hole of depression,” Françoise remembers. “I was sinking deeper and deeper with seemingly no way out.

“I felt like there wasn’t much in the way of support in Bahrain, an outlet where I could express and process my grief, and I gradually got worse. I would wake up in the morning and barely feel like I could get out of bed to go to the bathroom or take my two children to school. I gained a lot of weight, was barely able to climb the stairs without gasping for breath, and I was disgusted with myself on the chance I caught myself in the mirror. I was nearly 50, with a slowing metabolism, and I just thought that was it in life.”

Ultimately, in one lucky moment, something clicked and Françoise decided she needed to change. To this day, she still cannot pinpoint exactly what it was, but it felt powerful.

“I looked at myself and just realised things had to change,” she explains. “I’d just lost my father and sister, and I just wanted to disappear. I also didn’t want to go to a doctor and be dependent on pills for the rest of my life.

“Therefore, I chose healthy eating and fitness to emerge from it. I joined the gym at the Bahrain Rugby Football Club, which is an amazing facility with great equipment and a supportive atmosphere.

“Every day without fail, I wake up and the first thing I do is think positive thoughts and say a prayer of gratitude for where I am. I then go straight to the gym. It’s all about consistency, as is the nutrition side of things. Manage your portions and try to minimise sugar in your diet.

“I lost eight kilos in a year and now people approach me and ask if I’ve had plastic surgery to look how I do, but I promise I haven’t! It’s the greatest compliment I can receive. I feel energised and much healthier both physically and mentally.”

Françoise now hopes to use her experience to help those of a similar age, both men and women, who are struggling with grief and depression and feel they are ‘past it’ agewise.

“When I was at my worst, I felt like I didn’t have a support group,” she explains. “So I want my story to inspire others and help them become healthier and enter the next great chapter of their life.”

Quiet Time and Why It Is Important

walls of every preschool and kindergarten classroom you’ve seen. A picture schedule shows kids what to expect each day. When kids know quiet time is coming, it helps them prepare and transition.

Quiet time is an important part of a young child’s day, and not just because it gives small bodies a rest, but because it helps them emotionally reset and recharge, which is necessary for helping them manage their emotions and handle frustrations. Quiet time also helps kids get through their busy days with enough strength and energy to match their intense childhood curiosity. Frequent rest is essential for growing bodies. Building quiet time into your day can help your child better handle the stressors in their world, too.

While you may be fully invested in creating quiet time for your children each day, getting them on board can be a whole different issue! Transitions are hard for children, and transitioning from running around outside to quiet time can be tough. The trick to having a successful quiet time is structuring your day to build towards quiet time.

Use a picture schedule. Create a schedule for each day that uses a visual representation of each major activity, including quiet time, e.g., breakfast, getting dressed, playing outside, quiet time, art time and so on. You can print pictures from the internet, take photos or use line drawings and attach it to an easel .

Kids respond well to picture schedules—which is why you’ve probably noticed them on the

Make sure the activity before quiet time has a definite, clear end point. If kids are playing outside, they may be upset when you bring them in, complaining that they were just about to do something amazing. Consider having a snack or playing a game together just before quiet time. Activities that clearly end (the game ends, the snack is all gone) make for easier transition points than open-ended play-time.

Use a timer for quiet time. Once children are in quiet time, make sure it’s clear to them how long they’ll need to stay there. Consider using a visual timer that clearly indicates to children how long quiet time will last. You can also play music or use a standard playlist during quiet time, so your child can get a sense of how much longer they have in their quiet time. Remember, you have to be consistent in requiring them to stay in quiet time until it’s over; if they can whine their way out of it, they’re going to try getting out of it every day!

When you’re ready to try quiet time, keep in mind that although it feels like flipping on a movie is a great way to help kids relax, the reality is screen time isn’t actually the best use of quiet time. Kids benefit far more from relaxing, engaging activities that let them recharge their bodies while completing a calming task.

Books are the perfect quiet time activity, even for pre-readers. Reading and looking through books helps develop all kinds of academic and pre-academic skills. When children read the same book over and over, they learn predictability and routines. Children learn about sequencing and imagination. Have a big stack of preferred books available and let your child read through them during quiet time.

Lego, block sets and other building toys let kids have some quiet time while still being engaged in an activity. Have a bin or two of toys available in their bedroom, and encourage children to create away! Make it a rule that they can show you all their creations at the end of quiet time-otherwise they may keep sneaking out of their room to show you their masterpieces.

Calming music can help set the mood for your child, relaxing them and helping them reset themselves during their downtime.

There are a lot of options for quiet time, but remember to set up the day to prepare your child for quiet time, to help your child understand how long quiet time will last and to pick quiet, relaxing activities. Try to avoid screens and build in simple, engaging tasks to help them return to their day recharged and ready to go.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT OFFICE (PMO)

HOW FAR WE ARE IN BAHRAIN?

According to the Project Management Institute (PMI), only 58 percent of organisations fully understand the value of project management. Further, according to Wellingtone (2020), 71 percent of project professionals believe that the perceived value of PMOs will increase. In addition, the study conducted by Wellingtone in 2020 stated that 89 percent of organisations have one or more PMOs; 26 percent of these are less than two years old.

First certified PfMP Bahraini woman, PMO Consultant, PMO Global Awards Judge, PMO Award Winner

Earlier this year I did a short poll in one of the social media channels to get an idea whether organisations in Bahrain have an established project management office (PMO) or not. Many of the respondents stated they don’t have one or they are not sure if they do. Then I did a quick scan and realised that many organisations have no PMOs, and their projects are scattered, or sometimes not defined or managed as projects. No ownership is assigned and hence no accountability can be established, budgets assigned to them are mostly ad-hoc and approvals on the same are only sought when needed, projects are not strategically aligned to the corporate strategy (if any) and no mechanism is there for projects selection nor prioritisation, etc.

That’s why writing about this topic to establish some sort of awareness became a necessity.

“You don't know until you know.” – Cynthia Hand. Or in other words, you don’t realise you need it until you know what it is.

What is a PMO?

In the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide, the Project Management Office (PMO) is defined as “a management structure that standardises the project-related governance processes and facilitates the sharing of resources, methodologies, tools, and techniques”.

To elaborate on the above, the project management office (PMO) is a unit or department that defines and maintains the standards of project management for a company. It could be 1) centralised where there is one hub managing the projects, or 2) decentralised where a subunit is created under each department to manage the projects under that department – like having an IT PMO for instance for managing IT projects,

or a 3) hybrid, where a centralised hub and cross-functional units are established to create a matrix structure. Or it could simply be established for managing a project for the period of the project and then dissolved. It could be insourced or outsourced. There are many international bodies and associations nowadays that have defined many models for PMOs.

In general, there are many types and models for PMOs; no one size fits all, each organisation might require a different PMO setup. It depends on the organisation’s maturity, size and structure, stakeholders’ needs, the type of services and processes that are to be handled by the PMO.

LIFESTYLE | opinion June 2023 www.womanthismonth.com 66

Why do organisations need PMOs?

Below are some of the objectives for having a PMO in organisations:

The simple answer to this is to create value - Ensure that the projects undertaken by the organisation are delivering the intended value set by the leaders of the organisation, be it a competitive edge, operational excellence, revenue generating, cost reduction, etc.

More objectives can be summarised as follows:

• Facilitate the identification and classification of projects.

• Facilitate the selection and prioritisation of projects.

• Ensure strategic alignment with the corporate strategy.

• Ensure adequate governance controls for each project supported by clearly defined roles and responsibilities.

• Provide capacity and capability planning, to enable the effective management of resources across the organisation-wide projects.

• Identify and develop project management methodology, best practices, and standards that fit each project type and size, and design customised approaches if required.

• Offer coaching, mentoring, and training.

• Monitor compliance with project management standards, policies, procedures, and templates by means of project audits and oversight.

• Develop and manage project policies, procedures, templates, tools and techniques.

Critical success factors for establishing an effective PMO are:

• Sponsored and supported by the board and executive management.

• Managed by people who are well equipped with knowledge and practical experience.

• Has a well-defined operating model with clear vision, mission, structure, governance, roles, responsibilities, authority matrix, framework, policies, processes and technology.

• Supported by digital means to automate as much as possible.

• Aims to fulfill the organisation’s vision and meet stakeholders’ expectations.

All expectations and statistics indicate that the adoption of PMOs in the region will increase in the coming few years. Yet the first step to achieving this target is to make more people aware of the importance of project management. The below table reflects where we stand in terms of numbers in comparison to our neighbours in the GCC (Ref. PMI registry).

• Manage communication and reporting of the projects in the portfolio to the relevant stakeholders on a timely basis.

• Manage the benefits planned from each project by ensuring setting clear quantitative and qualitative KPIs, monitor them throughout the project.

• Ensure that projects are delivered on scope, on time, and on budget, yet considering the changes that could occur throughout the project lifecycle and make the necessary justifications for the same.

Why we need our Girlfriends

Ona recent night out with some friends, I laughed until I cried, discovered the most delicious pizza in Bahrain and had a good reason to get all dolled up. So, what was so special about this night? As a working mother, wife and a busy expat, this night made me realise not only how lucky I was to form such a great bond but just how important female friendships are for women.

Throughout my life my female friendships have led me to so many places of discovery, both physically and mentally. And here’s why I believe having deep, meaningful friendships are so important. Throughout my life, whether living in South Africa, where I am from (Howzit!) to living in Qatar, and now Bahrain, friendship is what has helped me navigate some difficult and tricky situations. From challenging situations at work, to traversing relationships, and then moving

into motherhood, the friends I have made have helped me to not only overcome many situations but have able to ease the load through simple basic things, like cracking a joke, reminding me of fond memories, going for a coffee, and going dancing! These moments, when things feel dark and heavy help uplift and lighten the load of the problem.

Additionally, I have discovered that particularly in Bahrain, the friends I have made have really offered me a community that makes me feel like I belong. Despite different backgrounds, and living in different countries, the common thread between us is the very thing that bonds us. That sense of belonging is reiterated by common ground, and transcends language and cultural barriers. Our female friendship also inspire our own independence, and our own self-actualisation

some friends are good for a catch up after a long time, picking up where we left off, and then other friendships are good for every day, meme sharing and just unloading after a difficult day. Female friendships offer encouragement when you just don’t want to work out or go to that painting class, and help us to reach our full potential.

For my friends back home, friendship has been a pillar to keep me grounded to remind me where I come from and where I am going to and why my journey is important. These friends offer emotional support when I am ready to 'throw in the towel and move back' and remind me about why I am living the life I chose. And, thank goodness for that, or else I’d be spending a lot of money on unnecessary flights home!

Where the world can often make women compete, when I look around, I see women building each other up, supporting each other and helping each other to heal and grow. Friendships are the cornerstone of women’s communities, they give us light, upliftment and most importantly they relieve us of the heavy burdens we bare even in a brief moment over pizza.

Farrah Saville revels in the joy female friendships bring to a woman’s life.

How would you describe yourself?

I’m a confident extrovert who absolutely loves life! I always see the glass as half full no matter what I come across and I never take the victim mentality. I absolutely hate 'why me?' personalities or moaners. I feel when life hands you hard times you just get on with it.

What was your favourite band or musician growing up?

So relevant! Backstreet Boys were my favourite band in highschool! I never thought that one day I would see them live in concert, it’s like a dream come true!

Diamonds or pearls?

Your dream holiday destination?

Beach resorts are always my favourite. My dream is to go to Bora Bora.

What’s the most random thing in your purse right now?

Garbage! I don’t know why, but I always end up with random receipts in there.

Do I have to choose? I love both so why discriminate! I am a sucker for diamonds and I love wearing them on all occasions; same with my pearls! I feel everyday of your life is a special occasion, so enjoy what you have rather than saving it for that one time that it comes out of the safe for you to wear it!

Three things you don’t leave your house without?

Mobile phone, wallet, lipstick

What would you save if your house was on fire?

My family first, including the animals. Second would be my photos, specifically the old ones.

What’s a quote that never fails to inspire you?

"You do you!" I know it’s not deep but I live by it. I do what makes me feel happy. I have never cared what people’s opinions of me are and I feel that’s why I’m living my best life and thriving.

What’s your favourite movie?

If I could sit through a movie and finish it I would have an answer to this. If I had to choose I’d go back to my youth and say Clueless. I loved the whole pop culture that was built after the movie came out.
