BOLSTERINGTIES

P.S. Balasubramanyam (known as Balu) has been instrumental in strengthening the bond between India and Bahrain. Kristian Harrison sat down with him to find out more about his role as a founding member and pioneer of the Bahrain India Society (BIS), and its role in bolstering ties between the two friendly nations.

TheBIS was established in 2008 as a non-profit organisation with the main objective of bringing closer ties of friendship and understanding between the peoples of Bahrain and India.

It was founded by HE Abdulnabi Al Sho’ala and is presently chaired by Abdulrahman Juma. HE Piyush Srivastava, the former Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Bahrain, serves as patron.

“I am very proud to have been associated with BIS since its inception,” states Mr. Balu. “I was the Treasurer for 10 years and am currently the Vice Chairman, something I consider an honour. As part of our objectives, the society boosts co-operation in the fields of economic, commercial, cultural, sports and scientific fields.”

The society’s dynamic board encompasses various professionals and hosts numerous events in coordination with the Indian Embassy and other prominent bodies in Bahrain, including the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham), Bahrain Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (BCICAI) and other government bodies like the Economic Development Board (EDB).

“Most recently, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the BIS and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in March, the main objective of which is to promote industrial and business relationships,” he states.

The BIS comprises 120 members, of which there are 15 corporate members and 105 individual members, which includes the board members, mentors, past chairmen and others. Corporate members are entitled to nominate five as representatives and members include both Bahraini and Indian businessmen, doctors, media, lawyers, educators, chartered accountants and other professionals.

Membership brings a number of perks. For example, the BIS will host the profile of corporate members and individual members on the BIS website and provide special access codes so they can access other members’ profiles and develop contacts between them to network for their mutual benefit. Sponsorship and hosting of company services is also available.

“We are currently finalising the details on introducing international benefits to the BIS,” Mr. Balu explains. “As well as aiming to get corporate sponsors like banks, insurance

companies and large corporates on board, we will get reciprocal membership with the Indian Club in Dubai, the Bangalore Club, and the Gymkhana Club in India. Not only this, but we are working on getting special discount arrangements with other amenities such as five-star hotels clubs, premium credit cards, fine dining restaurants etc.”

As part of its monthly activities, the society invites prominent speakers, including ministers, to give talks on subjects of interest to the members. “This does not just have to be business, but also knowledge building, wellness and other informative subjects. Recent examples of topics from the last year include the latest development in the country’s economy, insurance, banking, risk management, succession planning and will execution,” he says.

“Finally, we are excited to have more interaction with the Bahrain Embassy in India, and a programme is in place with the Ambassador of Bahrain to India and the Indian Embassy in Bahrain for closer co-operation in commercial, cultural and

sports activities which will include fun events for our members,” he adds.

As one of the cornerstones of Bahrain-India relations, BIS is always looking for ways to improve that relationship, and there are exciting plans in the pipeline to achieve this. According to Mr. Balu, chief of these is pursuing the Double Tax Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) between Bahrain & India. The society is also currently developing relations between the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), and other national organisations of India. “Having closer coordination between other entities in India about business opportunities available in India will allow us to disseminate these to the business community in Bahrain and provide opportunities. Creating awareness of the benefits of setting up companies in Bahrain for Indian businesses to take advantage of the Free Trade Agreement between the US and Bahrain is important to us,” he says.

“Furthermore, it is important

BIS Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed Juma Vice Chairman, P S Balasubramanyam

for us to facilitate businesses and enterprises from both countries. To do this, we will be holding a Bahrain-India Trade fair in the near future and we are putting the finishing touches on creating a ‘help desk’ for investors, in co-ordination with the Indian Embassy, which will offer extensive information about conducting business in either country,” he elaborates.

Some of Mr. Balu’s other social commitments include being an executive member and internal auditor of the Indian Community Relief Fund (ICRF), providing aid and welfare services to Indian workers in the Kingdom. He was also the Chairman and a current mentor of the Bahrain Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (BCICAI).

CHANGING THE WORLD WITH ZEAL

Dr. Arun Kumar Praharaj’s incredible journey from a successful corporate professional to a diaspora leader in Bahrain reflects his zeal to change the world through social upliftment and community welfare.

Despitea humble background and limited means, his late father had made social work an innate part of his and his siblings’ childhoods. Perhaps, unknowingly, he had also nurtured Dr Praharaj’s giving spirit and his need to make a meaningful difference.

Today, as the CEO of the Dadabhai Group of Companies and Founder of the Bahrain Odia Samaj, Dr. Praharaj has become an invaluable asset to the Kingdom’s expat community. His corporate success has not overshadowed his genuine desire to transform the lives of others. Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, he played a pivotal role in orchestrating relief efforts in close coordination with the Indian Embassy, including organising direct repatriation flights to Odisha, advocating for the rightful dues of distressed employees, and offering invaluable moral support to fellow Indian nationals facing hardships. A beacon of hope, he remains just a call or text away for any distressed Indian national in need.

Hailing from the same district as Madam President Draupadi Murmu, the first indigenous President of India, Dr. Praharaj admits he finds her journey beyond inspiring. It motivated him further on his own path of service and helping all but especially those who came from his home-state, Odisha. “Simplicity and humility are trademarks of my community. At large, Eastern India is filled with ordinary souls with extraordinary dreams. It is these dreams that I am committed to igniting and empowering,” says Dr. Praharaj, now fuelled by his own dedication to create a positive impact on the world.

His selfless efforts have earned him recognition and accolades, including being appointed as the Honorary Goodwill Ambassador for the Kingdom of Bahrain by the President of Vishva Odisha Foundation and Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, Dr. Surjya Narayan Patro. This appointment came as part of the Global Odia Awakening Campaign, an initiative to promote Brand Odisha and uplift the state. He was also awarded the prestigious Shrambandhu Samman – an honour bestowed upon him for giving his voice to the voiceless among the migrant community – by the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Mr Biswabhusan Harichandan at the 9th Foundation Day of the Kalinga Bangalore Foundation during 2022. Furthermore, he has been honoured by numerous credible social Institutions such as the Interview Times - Top 20 Inspirational

Personalities of Odisha, Living Legends of Odisha, Kalinga Gaurav Samman and the Shree Samman from the Parichay Foundation under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, Government of Odisha.

Apart from his humanitarian endeavours, Dr. Praharaj has focused on uniting the vibrant Odia diaspora in Bahrain. As the Vice President of the prestigious Bahrain India Art & Cultural Society, Chief Patron of Sanskriti, Bahrain and Founder Director of the Foundation of Global Odia Diaspora, he has brought together various global Odia associations under the stewardship of OSA-USA and OSUK-UK. Through vibrant exhibitions of handcrafted art from Odisha, cultural exchange programmes and celebrations like Odisha Day under the patronage of the esteemed Embassy of India, he has enabled a seamless flow of heritage and art between Bahrain and Odisha, bridging the gap between home and the host country for his community.

“I am grateful to His Majesty and the Government of this beautiful island for the support and cultural freedom given to the expatriate community, truly imbibing the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ - the world is one big family,” says Dr. Praharaj

Dr. Praharaj’s relentless pursuit of social welfare stems from his determination to change the world, one life at a time. Inspired by his own experiences and the exceptional journey of Madam President, he stands as a remarkably compassionate man of his words. With a heart that knows no boundaries and a spirit that seeks to empower and uplift, Dr. Arun Kumar Praharaj is a true inspiration for all, driving positive change and making the world a better place for everyone living by the sole principle of ‘Service to humanity is service to God.’

A Self-Made Success

Millennial community builder, entrepreneur, business coach and philanthropist Tanima Chakravorty speaks to Bahrain This Month about work, personal beliefs and the greater impact she envisions for society.

The reputation of the Chairperson of Al-Barq Group of Companies, Tanima Chakravorty, precedes her. The wellaccomplished young woman has made her mark across several realms and is a highly active member of society.

Ms. Chakravorty began her career as a finance professional and over time, transitioned into the role of running an electrical contracting and engineering company. “Following the unfortunate demise of my hero, my father, due to cancer, I undertook the role in Al-Barq as the Vice Chairperson,” says Ms. Chakravorty.

Al-Barq offers a wide range of specialised services to meet the electrical needs of residential, commercial, and industrial clients. These services include electrical installation, energy management, electrical design and engineering, testing and inspection, automation and control systems, project management, emergency electrical services, and maintenance and repair.

With years of valuable experience in the field, she developed an understanding of the technical and operational aspects involved in running a successful company.

“I dedicated myself to undertaking relevant professional courses in the electrical engineering field, building a network and under the guidance of experienced electrical professionals and experts, I was able to demonstrate my capabilities in managing the affairs of Albarq. I am committed to upholding the legacy of my father and taking the company to new heights,” she says.

She is also the Founder of Biolights which specialises in the development and production of innovative lighting solutions that resemble natural light. As a certified business coach, she is recognised by the International Coaching Federation of France (ICF), and is committed to helping individuals and businesses achieve their goals.

As for her academic pursuits, Ms. Chakravorty has an MBA in Finance and is currently working towards obtaining a PhD in Finance from Boston University.

“Beyond my professional and academic life, I am a trained classical dancer and my passion lies in creativity, art and

humanity. I am interested in social and environmental issues and firmly believe in making a positive impact in the world and strive to contribute to causes that promote sustainability, equality, and social justice,” she says.

She actively participates in various organisations dedicated to serving the community. Hence, she is a member of the Bahrain India Business Society and holds the role of Vice District Governor for Rotaract District 2452 Middle East. “During my journey with Rotaract Bahrain, I found a deep sense of fulfilment in working collectively as a team to create a bigger community impact. This resonated with my inherent nature of serving the community, particularly the underprivileged segment of society. As my involvement grew, I was honoured to be elected as the President of the club by its members,” she says.

As a renowned philanthropist, she believes that effective philanthropy requires thoughtful planning, transparency, and collaboration with the intended beneficiaries and other stakeholders. “By strategically allocating resources and partnering with organisations that have expertise in the relevant areas, philanthropists can maximise the impact of their contributions and ensure sustainable change,” she says.

Ms. Chakravorty recently received the Bahrain Kerala Samajam golden entrepreneur award for strengthening the India Bahrain relationship and was named ‘Woman of the month’ for the Bahrain Chapter of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. She also received a business Elite award ‘40 under 40’ as the most influential entrepreneur in the Middle East and Europe.

Imparting words of advice, she concludes: “To young women considering leadership roles or entrepreneurship, my advice is to believe in your capabilities and aspirations. Embrace your unique strengths and use them to your advantage. Furthermore, be willing to take risks and step out of your comfort zone. Lastly, never underestimate the power of continuous learning and selfimprovement.”

AN ICON OF PROGRESS

With a career in the Middle East spanning more than 40 years and as Bahrain’s sole recipient of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award to honour Non-Resident Indians who have made an exceptional and meritorious contribution in their chosen field abroad, K.G. Baburajan is one of the most important Indian citizens in the Kingdom. Currently the Chairman and General Manager of BKG Holding, he sat down with Bahrain This Month to tell his story.

How did you first arrive in the region?

My career in the Middle East began in 1979 when I joined Al-Hoty Stanger in Saudi Arabia, a branch of Stanger, one of the oldest quality control testing and inspection services founded in the UK back in 1840. We set up a facility in Bahrain to work on the construction of the King Fahd Causeway, which was my first major project. I was then asked to join the company’s engineering department of standards, specifically the field of Foundation Design and Piling in Bahrain a couple of years later.

What other projects have you been involved with? Which was the most challenging and why?

I have also been involved in the construction of the Shaikh Khalifa Port, Alba, BAPCO, Bahrain International Airport Terminal modernisation, Almoayyed Tower, Shaikh Isa Bridge, Sitra Bridge and more. I would say the Causeway project was the most challenging one because that was the biggest project in the entire region at the time. Plus, it was at the beginning of my career so I was still constantly learning.

As a proud recipient of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, how vital do you see the relationship between Bahrain and India, both on a national level and for the Indian diaspora in Bahrain?

The relationship between the two countries goes back at least 5,000 years, so the connection was there already going back to the trade of spices and grain. In more recent times, because of the British rule in India, Bahrain acted like a link between Britain and India. Indians should be proud to have contributed so much to the development of this part of the world; and we are grateful to the Royal Family for giving us the opportunity for unrestricted professional growth and progress.

What are your social commitments outside of business, particularly in the area of boosting relations?

I believe that God has given me a certain privilege in life. I therefore feel that I should share that with people who are less

privileged in all aspects, whether that is education, medical, social or any other way we can help rather than just finance alone. I have built houses for poorer people in Kerala and other parts of the world.

What advice would you give to young engineers who are interested in a career in construction or who have recently graduated, particularly young Indians?

I think the most important thing to remember is that you help to give a professional service to the country, wherever you are working. We should also uphold our tradition and culture of the country, which is India. The most important thing, I would say, is that they should be dedicated and responsible in their profession. Then, naturally, success will come. Never do something just for the sake of doing a job and earning some money. The passion should be there, and Bahrain is one of the best for working and opportunity if you work hard.

ICICI Bank offers innovative financial solutions for Indians in Bahrain

ICICI Bank Limited launched retail and commercial banking activities in the Kingdom of Bahrain in 2007, three years after setting up an offshore banking unit in the Kingdom. Ever since, the Bank has been catering to various banking and financial needs of the NRIs living in the island country. The Bank has been providing improved convenience to its customers by continuous upgradation and introduction of new products and services, as well as expansion of its physical network. It has a branch in Manama and two service centres in Juffair and Dana Mall. The service centres provide services for all products offered by the Manama branch, except cash deposit and withdrawal.

ICICI Bank Limited Country Head – Bahrain, Raghavendra Shenoy, believes that the Bank has gained the trust and confidence from the NRI community by providing customised products and services. “As the Bank continues to expand its operations, it recognises the importance of catering to the unique requirements of NRIs,” says Mr. Shenoy. The Bank’s dedication to serve NRIs is further exemplified by offering products and services which they can use in both India and Bahrain. “These offerings facilitate easy management of funds and enable NRIs to conveniently invest or save in India. We offer a suite of products and services for retail and private banking customers including savings and current accounts, fixed deposits, global money transfer or remittances, and investment in instruments like bonds and mutual funds for private banking customers” he states.

Bilateral relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and India were established over 50 years ago. Today, over 350,000 Indian nationals reside in Bahraintheir home away from home. We learned about the innovative products and services that ICICI Bank

Limited, Bahrain offers to these Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).

“One of the most popular offerings is the ‘Loan Against Deposit’ facility which enables NRIs to avail loans against their deposits. This convenient facility allows customers to meet their financial needs without liquidating deposits,” he adds.

NRIs can also take advantage of ICICI Bank’s home loan for properties in India – a unique offering which allows them to invest in property in India while living in the Kingdom. Similarly, they can make use of the 3-in-1 trading account in India. The Bank also offers a range of trade and transaction banking services to corporate clients.

Notably, ICICI Bank recently expanded its reach in the Kingdom through the opening of a service centre at Dana Mall, Sanabis which is easily accessible for residents in the Central, Northern and Southern provinces. “This expansion enhances the Bank’s presence in the country. It also enables us to provide a seamless banking experience to customers in the vicinity,” he says.

“Through its NRI products and ‘Loan Against Deposit’ offerings, the Bank has catered to the specific needs of the Indian community in Bahrain, making banking more accessible and convenient. As the Bank continues to innovate and redefine the banking landscape in Bahrain, it is poised to strengthen the economic ties and promote bilateral trade between these two thriving nations,” he concludes.

TALKING BUSINESS

Vijay Boloor is a serial entrepreneur, having spent more than 40 years in Bahrain. As a board member of the Bahrain India Society, he was recently elected as its Treasurer. He spoke to Bahrain This Month about his career and the BIS’ ability to open doors for budding businessmen.

Could you give us a summary of your four decades in Bahrain?

I came to the Gulf in 1977 and I started my career in Dubai working for the British Bank of the Middle East, which is now HSBC, until 1984. I originally came with another bank but quickly moved to another company, and since then I have been the Director of Gajria Holdings. My wife was born in Bahrain and I myself have been a Bahraini citizen for 20 years now.

When did you know that you were an entrepreneur?

I’ve always been interested in business. My father was involved in Bollywood with the legendary Mehboob Khan and I almost followed him into the industry as a script writer and director! However, that wasn’t my path and I knew my heart was set on entrepreneurship.

What are your thoughts on doing business in Bahrain both as an expatriate and now as a Bahraini?

Originally as an expatriate, businesses were restricted in terms of the percentage of business you could hold or even enter at all. Gradually, the Kingdom, thanks to

the wise decisions of His Majesty King Hamad, have made it much easier; very few businesses are restricted no matter where you are from. This is a great thing in order to create jobs and opportunities in this wonderful country, and now expatriates can own businesses completely. They have the full confidence to put their money into the Kingdom.

What advantage do companies have by operating in Bahrain compared to elsewhere in the GCC?

Whilst we are aiming to open the GCC market to investors in Bahrain, or at least the opportunity to expand, Bahrain is much less expensive to establish a company thanks to its extremely business-friendly nature and it’s a great option to live here comfortably.

You were recently elected as the Treasurer of the Bahrain India Society (BIS). What achievements have you accomplished so far?

It’s my sixth year on the board and I am proud to have been elected as its Treasurer! We have a membership of 120 which includes both prominent members and company representatives. We have just signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the BIS and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the main objective of which is to promote industrial and business relationships and facilitate investors on both sides.

What is the main advantage of being a member of the BIS?

The biggest advantage is networking. We host frequent talks with business leaders, government officials and ministers, giving people the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the business environment. You can expand your business through contacts, and there’s no other way to hold talks with a hundred CEOs at formal and informal dinners!

Do you have any advice for expatriates who wish to set up a business in Bahrain?

At the moment, what I like to call ‘new age’ businesses are booming. Financial and digital technology businesses are more likely to succeed as they don’t involve too much inventory or human resources. Of course, the passion and determination to work hard is just as important as the idea itself.

A MAN OF THE COMMUNITY

Driven by a clear head and a full heart, Mr. Mansoor strives ever forward in his business life and his personal goal of building communities. His passionate belief that everybody deserves a chance can easily be seen in his choices, prior to his meteoric rise to success, and through how he has wielded his growing influence.

Saara Group is a massive Middle Eastern conglomerate headquartered in Bahrain, with ties around the world. It caters to a range of services across verticals and boasts a fine group of Strategic Business Units (SBUs) under its umbrella that it deploys according to the need of each client it works with. The Group’s portfolio includes industrial solutions which deliver construction services with a focus on Petrochemical Plants and Facilities, as well as renting and supplying specialised industrial equipment as well as handling industrial solutions. The Group has highly trained and certified staff capable of offering an unwavering quality of work in any situation.

Mr. Mansoor has played a key role in bringing a multi-million-dollar investment to India through a US-based Triton EV manufacturing unit as well as a lithium battery plant. Furthermore, a commodity trading subsidiary based in UAE handles Oil and Gas trading as an Aramco and Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) vendor. The group’s portfolio also includes the California-based JVKUSA E&P that has placed oil exploration into its roster.

Playing to Win

A passionate sportsman himself, Mr. Mansoor is involved in sports administration as Brave Combat Federation’s Vice President for India

and South East Asia, President of KHK Cricket and Bahrain Cricket Federation’s Chairman of the Advisory board. Since its formation, the federation has used its strategic vision to help Bahrain’s men and women teams achieve spectacular success.

His growing influence in international cricket circles is obvious from the fact that the Asian Cricket Council held their Executive Board meeting in the country with ACC President, Jay Shah, and other cricket board chiefs making their first visit to the Kingdom.

He is also the man responsible for bringing one of the most iconic trophies to Bahrain as the Kingdom is a part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Trophy Tour. In fact, the trophy will be in Bahrain on August 12 and August 13. It’s an endeavour of mammoth proportions and it could have only been possible with someone who has garnered massive admiration in the sports community and has exceptional organisational skills to get it done. And, as demonstrated with the Bahrain Premier League in 2018, Mr. Mansoor has done it all before.

Philanthropic Pursuits

As VP of KHK Heroes Foundation, Mr. Mansoor spearheaded the assistance of economically vulnerable communities and expatriates throughout the kingdom during COIVD-19. He is closely associated with several reputable expatriate

associations in the country and is a board member of the prestigious Bahrain India Society. He has been felicitated for exemplary community work by the BKS and KCA. The most notable among the awards that he has been conferred with, the Hind Ratan Award by the NRI Welfare Society, is his most cherished.

ALL ABOUT RICKSHAWS!

As part of Bahrain This Month’s special India in Bahrain feature, Kristian Harrison looks at one of the cultural cornerstones of Indian motoring, the rickshaw! A ubiquitous staple of the country’s roads, they are the most popular form of motorised transports in towns and cities.

of the pullers grew and the obvious symbolism of class distinctions became an embarrassment.

huge reduction in pollution in cities such as New Delhi and Kolkata.

The term ‘rickshaw’ originates from the Japanese word ‘jinrikisha’, which is ‘human-powered vehicle’ in Japanese. Indeed, it was there that the very first rickshaws were invented as a two- or threewheeled passenger vehicles with a doorless, chair-like body, generally pulled by one person carrying one passenger. The first rickshaw is documented as being created by Izumi Yosuke in 1869 at the onset of a technological boom in the country.

In the late 19th century, hand-pulled rickshaws became an inexpensive, popular mode of transportation across Asia. Peasants who migrated to large Asian cities often worked first as a rickshaw runner, although it was one of the deadliest professions of the time due to the crippling exhaustion involved.

Rickshaws first appeared in India in around 1880, first introduced in Simla by the Christian missionary, Reverend J. Fordyce. At the turn of the century they were introduced in Calcutta and by 1914 were a conveyance for hire.

With the rapid advancements in technology in the early 20th century, pulled rickshaws quickly became obsolete as automated cars and trains became widely available. Furthermore, they were actually banned in numerous countries as a general consciousness about the treatment

Enter the era of the auto rickshaw. The look will be familiar to anyone who has visited eastern Asia; a sheet-metal body or open frame resting on three wheels; a canvas roof with drop-down side curtains; a small cabin at the front for the driver operating handlebar controls, and a space at the rear for usually a maximum of three passengers.

The Mazda-Go, a three-wheel open ‘truck’ released in 1931 is often considered the first of what became auto rickshaws. Numerous companies from across Asia began to develop their own version through the year, but in the modern market India is by far and away the largest manufacturer. Bajaj Auto alone the largest individual producer, sold 780,000 last year.

Furthermore, steps have been taken to make rickshaw travel safer for women in India. Many state governments have launched the Pink Rickshaw initiative, whereby women travel on pink rickshaws without the fear of being harassed or assaulted, with features such as a panic button and GPS tracking fitted as standard.

Auto rickshaws provide cheap and efficient transportation throughout India. Modern auto rickshaws run on compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) due to government regulations, which has seen a

Modern electric auto rickshaws, which run on electric motors and have high torque and loading capacity with better speed, are also gaining popularity in India. Many rickshaw drivers are moving to electric three-wheelers as the prices of CNG is very high and the government is also taking actions to convert current CNG and diesel rickshaws to electric rickshaws as part of the push for e-mobility through the national FAME-II scheme.

As of the latest figures, in 2022 India has about 2.4 million battery-powered, threewheeled rickshaws on its roads. Some 11,000 new ones hit the streets each month, with the main hindrance to adoption being the paucity of charging stations. With only 2,800 currently in India, it’s clear that more work needs to be done to keep this Indian icon powering along.

Making History

India’s lunar exploration programme is on the verge of its greatest triumph yet as the Chandrayaan-3 rocket successfully blasted off on a mission to the moon last month.

The rocket, which translates to ‘moon craft’ in Sanskrit, took off from a launch pad in Sriharikota, an island in southern India, with an orbiter, a lander and a rover, in a demonstration of India’s emerging space technology. The spacecraft will embark on a journey lasting slightly over a month before landing on the moon’s surface later this month. Until then, the rocket is slowly boosting its orbit ahead of a final shot toward the moon. To do this, the spacecraft’s propulsion module completes an orbit-raising manoeuvre, with the engines firing at the spacecraft’s closest approach to Earth, raising its apogee, or the farthest point from Earth of its orbit.

Chandrayaan-3 is seen as the crown jewel of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the mission is India’s second attempt to touch down on the moon, following the failed 2019 attempt made by the Chandrayaan-2 lander. On that occasion, it entered the lunar orbit but a software glitch caused it to lose touch with its lander, which crashed while making its final descent to deploy a rover to search for signs of water. The new mission has

built on the lessons learned from the earlier landing attempt. If touchdown is successful, the mission lander and rover will collect science data on the surface for up to 14 Earth days (a single day on the moon). The six-wheeled lander and rover module of Chandrayaan-3 is configured with payloads that will provide data to the scientific community on the properties of lunar soil and rocks, including chemical and elemental compositions.

A successful landing would make India the fourth country – after the United States, the Soviet Union and China – to achieve the feat. According to ISRO, the main objective of the mission this time was not studying the lunar surface, but rather simply a safe and soft landing on the moon.

With India emerging as the world’s fifth-largest economy, its government is eager to show off the country’s prowess in security and technology. India is using research from space and elsewhere to

solve problems at home. Its space programme has already helped develop satellite, communication and remote-sensing technologies and has been used to gauge underground water levels and predict weather in the country, which is prone to cycles of drought and flood.

India is also looking forward to its first mission to the International Space Station next year, in collaboration with the US as part of recent agreements between presidents Narendra Modi and Joe Biden at the White House.

This one-off visit by an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station will precede India launching its first astronaut from Indian soil on an Indian rocket in late 2024.

Jammu Kashmir Exploring the Opulence of &

Author Mir Junaid has captured the changing dynamics of Jammu & Kashmir in his book, Naya Jammu & Kashmir Journey till Now, which explores various aspects of this treasured state.

The territory of Jammu & Kashmir has long been known for its astounding natural beauty. As we flipped through the pages of Mr. Junaid’s book, we discovered more - its historical significance, cultural diversity, arts and crafts, and its religious and spiritual significance.

Historical Significance

Jammu and Kashmir have a history that dates back thousands of years. The territory has been a melting pot of various civilisations, including the Mauryas, Kushans, Guptas, and Mughals. Its strategic location along the ancient Silk Road has contributed to the cultural richness and the assimilation of diverse influences.

Cultural Diversity

Known for their cultural diversity, stemming from the coexistence of multiple ethnic and religious communities, the region is home to Kashmiri Pandits, Dogras, Gujjars, Paharis, Baltis, Ladakhis, and many others, each with their distinct traditions, languages, and customs. This cultural mosaic has contributed to its vibrant tapestry.

Art and Craftsmanship

The region also boasts a rich tradition of art and craftsmanship. Kashmiri shawls, pashmina, and carpets are renowned worldwide for their intricate designs and superior quality. The intricate woodwork of Kashmir, with its exquisite patterns and carvings, is a testament to the craftsmanship of the region.

Literary and Musical Heritage

Jammu and Kashmir have been a cradle of literary and musical traditions, producing renowned poets and scholars who have contributed to Urdu and Kashmiri literature. The famous Persian poet Mirza Ghalib and the Kashmiri poetess Lal Ded are among the luminaries from the region. Music, particularly Sufi and folk music, is an integral part of the cultural fabric. The soul-stirring strains of santoor, rabab, and the enchanting Sufiana

kalam continue to captivate audiences.

Religious and Spiritual Significance

Jammu and Kashmir are revered by people of various faiths. The region is home to important religious sites such as the Amarnath Cave, Vaishno Devi Shrine, Hazratbal Shrine, and Shankaracharya Temple. These sacred places attract pilgrims and devotees from different parts of the world, fostering an atmosphere of spiritualism and religious harmony.

The Role of Sufism in Unity

In the 9th century, Sufism, a version of Islam promoting religious humanism, was introduced in Kashmir by Hazrat Bulbul Shah of the Suhrawadi order. The most influential Sufi in the region, Miir Sayyed Ali Hamadani arrived in 1372 with 700 disciples and spread Islam and the principles of the Kubrawi Sufi order, earning popularity among the territory’s people.

Hamadani’s teachings emphasised oneness of God, purity, God-fearing piety, and unity. He contributed to various fields such as philosophy, jurisprudence, ethics, and crafts.

Hamadani’s teachings helped in the valley’s development and reintroduced an indigenous religious order called Rishism or Rishi request—a Hindu-Muslim syncretic custom combining Sufism and ancient Vedic practices. These two ideologies blended over the years promoting peace, harmony, and fraternity amongst all, regardless of religion. The amalgamation of Sufism and Hinduism resulted in the concept of Kashmiriyat, representing the collective identity of the people and

emphasising religious tolerance.

Preserving Cultural Heritage

The preservation of Jammu and Kashmir’s historic sites, promoting traditional arts and crafts, and documenting indigenous knowledge and folklore is of utmost importance. Mir Junaid’s book sheds light on the region’s heritage and calls for preservation of its captivating past, which will enrich the lives of its people and foster appreciation for diversity and harmony in a more promising future.

You can now enjoy a Gujarati thali with over 20 delightfully delicious items at Delmon International Hotel located in Manama.

It’sno secret that India has the highest vegetarian population in the world with over 275million Indians opting for meatfree dishes. With such a significant Indian population in Bahrain, it comes as no surprise that, here too, we have a noteworthy number of vegetarians and vegans.

On the occasion of India’s Independence Day, Delmon International Hotel which is located opposite Gold City in Manama, is very proud to launch their purely vegetarian Gujarati thali. Executive Chef Mahendra Shekawat, who hails from Rajasthan, will be working handin-hand with the renowned Gujarati Chef, Narendra Karena, who hails from the bustling city of Ahmedabad to serve mouth-watering Gujarati favourites.

An estimated two out of three Gujaratis are vegetarians so, naturally, they are quite adept at incorporating leafy greens, root vegetables, pulses, and even fruit into their daily meals. As part of the special thali at Delmon International Hotel, diners can enjoy over 20 scrumptious items prepared from scratch.

“We are proud to reintroduce the Gujarati thali with Chef Narendra who is quite popular among Bahrain’s Gujarati community,” says Chef Shekawat, who has a collective 18 years of experience in Bahrain’s culinary industry. “India is extremely famous for its cuisine and it brings us great joy to present a thali as special as this. In fact, we have made arrangements with our suppliers to receive only the very freshest of ingredients imported from India.

Even the ghee we will be using in our food will be from the world-renowned Indian brand Amul!” he says.

The hotel has every intention to stand out from other Indian restaurants through this unique offering. “We will be serving the purest of food – known in India as sattvic -free from preservatives, artificial colour and processed flavour enhancers. In fact, our food will not only be vegetarian, but Jain meaning that we won’t be using onions or garlic in our food,” says Chef Karena proudly.

Having presented the very best of Gujarati staples right here in Bahrain for over 10 years, Mr. Karena is happy to present this phenomenal thali and will be paying attention to the finer details. “Oondios, Moong Thal, Gujarati Thepla and Pathra can be enjoyed through this thali. I will also be serving a very special Sitaphal Basundhi, which is a famous cold pudding made with custard apples, Beetroot Halwa and Jalebi. And, of course, a very traditional buttermilk beverage, Chaas, will be served too. It’s here that people can enjoy the best of desi flavours,” he says.

The fact of the matter is, vegetarian food in some cases can lack

creativity, but the same cannot be said about Indian vegetarian food. This thali is sure to be a hit in the books of not only the Indian diaspora residing in Bahrain but vegans and vegetarians across the island looking for a divinely flavourful dish!

The special Gujarati thali will be available at lunch from 12.30pm to 3.30pm on Friday and Saturday. Rajasthani specialities can be added to the thali for a nominal charge.

Stories forBigthe Screen

The Kingdom’s cinema scene has expanded massively in recent years, and it is currently celebrating one of its biggest releases yet, the Hindi-language drama Bas Ik Vaari. Kristian Harrison spoke to the film’s writer and director, Preety Praveen, about her experiences as an expat, how it shaped the movie and her response to its overwhelming reaction.

Ms. Praveen hails from Patiala, Punjab and describes herself as a psychologist by profession and a writer by heart. She moved to Bahrain in 2009 alongside her husband and two children, and it is the life of an expat which inspired her to pen Bas Ik Vaari.

“I started writing from a tender age but never took it seriously until a decade ago,” she

explains. “This led me to eventually writing and directing short movies and theatre plays. In fact, one of my best plays was ‘Aashiyana Mera,’ which was showcased at the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) event which was held in January 2018. I also cherish two of my short movies, ‘Hesitancy’ and ‘Lakeerien’, which were based on social awareness in Bahrain. In 2019, I published my first book, ‘Cross Connection,’ based on my own story,” explains Ms. Praveen.

Bas Ik Vaari, fully conceived and conceptualised in Bahrain, is a story revolving around a father and a daughter and their love and hate relationship. It explores how they get trapped in delusional misunderstandings and whether they are able to resolve them.

“Most of my stories are women-oriented and so is Bas Ik Vaari,” Ms Praveen says. “I had written this story a couple of years back but I had to wait until the pandemic was over to be lucky enough to find the perfect team to work on this project.”

“While writing this story, I thought of the helplessness of a girl to keep herself connected with her family after marriage. Being a lady, I’ve also experienced some hiccups in my life and have tried to incorporate those feelings,” she says.

“The success of the movie lies in the compliments we received from our audience. It was a dream come true to get

the opportunity to screen Bas Ik Vaari at Mukta Cinema and everyone who came left the screening with a message in their heart, memories of their loved ones and tears of nostalgia and love,” she adds.

Audiences loved the simplicity and natural approach of the characters and the five back-toback shows were sold out, so much so that there are plans to screen the film again in cinemas in September after which, should all go well, it will be available to stream.

Regardless of the next step, seeing the film come to fruition after years of writing, filming and post-production, made it all worth it for Ms. Praveen.

“I never had thought in my wildest dreams that it would turn out to be such a big, beautiful and successful project,” she says happily.

“Until the last day, my team was rushing to finish the final details. I literally had sleepless nights before the release. On the day of the premiere, I sat in the cinema with my whole crew, holding hands with our hearts pounding. I can still visualise that moment, when the movie finished and we all got up and turned back to see the audience. All were clapping, had tears and for the next half an hour, we all were flooded with compliments and hugs,” she says.

“I want to thank each and every person who has made Bas Ik Vaari successful. The best reward I received was that everyone wanted to know about my next project. So, stay tuned!” she concludes.

A VISIONARY BUSINESSMAN

Bhaskaran K. Edathody is an experienced business professional and has spent four decades in the chemical industry of Saudi Arabia, rising to the position of Director of the Gulf Desert Chemical Company. He has recently established a Bahrainbased business, Adler Westpoint, so Bahrain This Month caught up with him to find out more.

Mr. Edathody’s career began after graduating from the University of Calicut with a B. Com degree in 1980, when he became an executive in Tulsiani Chambers, Mumbai. In 1982, he was offered the role of Executive Secretary in TRADCO, Saudi Arabia, which is when he relocated overseas, and gained more comprehensive knowledge of business and administration. After a year, he joined RAWABI, where he stayed for 28 years before a stint as Divisional Manager at ERAM Trading and Contracting, which led to his role as Director of Business Services at GDC.

GDC is an integrated chemical company which describes itself as passionate about supplying high quality chemical and petrochemical products and services. GDC’s business started by stocking and supplying various grades of Drilling Admixtures and has developed to now cover the cycle from sourcing and procuring, formulation and manufacturing, packaging and refilling, warehousing and logistics, as well as technical support.

One of the cornerstones to Mr Edathody’s success is his approach to leadership.

“Transparency and integrity, encouraging innovation and creativity while promoting health and safety at the workplace are the guiding values of my leadership philosophy,” he says.

“Our broad vision is driven by people who are our greatest asset. Fairness, transparency, accountability and ethics are the main elements of our corporate governance structured to achieve the business purpose efficiently and fairly for all stakeholders. Our team is always working on improving customer experience. Since our customers have put faith and trust in our services, we always try to create a win-win situation under a give and take policy.

“Ultimately, persistence and perseverance is the key. Have faith and keep working towards your goals while trusting the process. It will happen soon. Slow and steady wins the race,” he says.

Mr. Edathody has used his wisdom and experience to establish Adler Westpoint. The company was set up with the intention to provide professional, direct B2B marketing and sales support services and proficient assistance

to SME’s and corporate entities in the Kingdom.

“Recent studies show that 80 percent of Bahrain’s economic map consists of SME’s run with three-to-10 employees per organisation,” he explains. “We intend to provide highly effective services for a very nominal cost in order to reduce the financial burden on such companies and help them to increase their stronghold over their line of trade. Sharing more than 20 years of corporate business experience between the directors, companies can be assured that they are dealing with one of the best business teams in the Kingdom.”

Considering his extensive experience within the industry, Mr. Edathody is in the perfect position to offer advice to budding industry leaders.

“Be customer-friendly and passionate, know your market, be prepared with your finances and most importantly, keep them in order,” he proposes. “Sometimes you are required to make sacrifices, so be prepared for them too. Partner with your suppliers and customers, be flexible and delegate authority wherever and whenever required.”
