STRENGTHENING SHARED VALUES
In his second year as US Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, His Excellency Steven C. Bondy speaks to Kristian Harrison about his objectives as ambassador, his experiences on the island and the cooperation between the two countries with regards to regional maritime security, trade and more.
Your Excellency, can you give us a brief summary of your career to date?
I have had the wonderful opportunity to serve as a diplomat for the United States for 32 years now. I thought when I joined, I’d see the world, but in fact I’ve just seen a narrow swathe which is the Middle East. I was previously in Bahrain from 2004-2007 so it was a wonderful opportunity to come back to the Kingdom, a place where I feel like I know the people and culture well. I have also served elsewhere in the Gulf in places including the UAE, Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq and Afghanistan. I also worked on issues on the Middle East in Washington.
You’re now in your second full year in Bahrain, in what ways is your job different now compared to when you first arrived?
First and foremost, I arrived in early February 2022 when the pandemic was still on, which was hard for diplomats. As our Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said: “Diplomacy is a contact sport.” You have to meet people, shake hands and look one another in the eye to work out issues. Thankfully, due to Bahrain’s effective handling of the pandemic, we emerged out of that soon after which allowed citizens of Bahrain to see each other again. From a substantive point of view, also in February last year Russia invaded Ukraine which changed how the US works with Bahrain and other nations to push back on the unfair, unjust invasion of a peaceful nation.
Following this, have your mission and goals shifted at all based on current events? What are the current main objectives of your ambassadorship?
Firstly, my job is to build upon the very solid foundation of relations between the governments and people of the United States and Bahrain. We can go back 130 years when US citizens first came to Bahrain as missionaries who formed a hospital, school and church, all of which are incredibly still operating today. We’re proud of that legacy and the contributions still going on. We have this great depth of common understanding, of values that Bahrain and Americans share. It’s my job to build on that relationship, to make it ever stronger which we do in key areas such as the strategic realm where our military relationship deters our adversaries. The US is also working very hard to build Bahrain’s relationship with Israel through the Abraham Accords. Finally, we also have the commercial side and what I like to call the ‘values aspect’ of our foreign policy; human rights, civil society, democratic development, religious freedom and more.
What have been your key observations of Bahrain now that you’ve had time to truly experience the country and its culture?
Bahrain has grown substantially; in terms of population, infrastructure and also literally because of the land reclamation programme!
The Kingdom is central to the regional
economy and the focus on education and training skills so that Bahrainis can thrive in the global economy is something that’s new for me. It’s a focused and practical exercise to ensure that the next generation is ready to thrive economically, which is extremely wise. Of course, the kindness and spirit of the people hasn’t changed. Bahrain has been open to the world for thousands of years and that shines through. Friends, family and colleagues are all welcomed. I also admire how Bahrainis are willing to work hard which is not the case all over the world.
What experiences in Bahrain, whether positive or challenging, have led to you becoming a better ambassador?
Every day there are new challenges, surprises and more. I would say that the key thing for me is that I try to develop my leadership skills so that we as an embassy can make progress and achieve objectives. Leadership is an art not a science, you can’t go through a checklist but instead have to create an environment. This is both the greatest challenge and also the most satisfying aspect of what we do. Communication and empowering the staff to use their creativity, alongside monitoring our approach, is so important. I feel the need for prudent risk-taking; we have to look for opportunities to always do better. I like to compare it with snow skiing; if you’re doing it all day and don’t fall, you’re probably not pushing yourself. Similarly, in diplomacy we need to take risks to achieve objectives.
How important is the US-Bahrain relationship when it comes to the maritime environment and protecting the US’ interests and safety in the Middle East?
Our defence relationship is fundamental. Our first military deployment in the Gulf region was right here in 1947 when we launched our enduring presence, which still exists to this day. Maritime security is not just important to us but for the world, as a huge supply of the world’s energy comes through the Arabian Gulf and out into the economies of the world. Being able to project power to ensure commerce and trade continue unhindered with free movement of commercial vessels is an important aspect of prosperity and growth in the global economy. Our military relationship is blossoming. Bahrain recently became the first customer of our F-16 Block 70 aircraft, and the first one rolled off assembly a couple of months ago. This opens up a whole new area of military interoperability and all of us here at the embassy and the 8,000 strong military members work tirelessly with our Bahraini counterparts to achieve our common objectives.
How does the US support the members of the US military in Bahrain?
There is a whole suite of options available to our service members and their families, here, from mental health to physical health and
also spiritual health. For example, we have a Chaplain Corps on base who provide pastoral and religious guidance to our team. We also provide the Bahrain School for children of our service members, following the American curriculum, and we are proud that many of Bahrain’s leaders including HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, are graduates.
What is the current state of trade relations between the US and Bahrain? Do you have any specific figures?
The commercial relationship is thriving. In 2022, the bilateral trade volume was USD2.85 billion, which is the second highest on record behind only 2018. We also noticed that Bahrain had a trade surplus with the United States meaning it was exporting more goods to the US than the other way. My job as an ambassador is to boost the export of US goods and services, and we have a free trade agreement in place to pursue that. What is a certainty is that commercially, we have more interactions, innovations and opportunities because of our relationship.
The Export-Import Bank, a US government function that provides trade financing to export goods and services, is one of the ways in which we can support American exports into Bahrain.
Secondly, we are working very carefully on resuming direct flights between the two countries with Gulf Air. The logistics are being ironed out, but when that happens, tourism, education, business and medical travel will increase tremendously.
Finally, we are working closely with the Bahrain government on the United States Trade Zone, which provides a specific location for US companies to set up to do light manufacturing and logistics to pursue opportunities throughout the region.
Anything else to add?
I just want to reiterate that it’s an incredible honour to represent the government and people of the US here in Bahrain. The depth of the relationship is hard to fathom; we have common objectives and tend to see things in the same way. That doesn’t mean we don’t have disagreements, as even brothers fight! However, when we do disagree, we do so unemotionally and with great respect and appreciation for the other’s point of view. There’s nothing I’d rather be doing than what I am right here, right now.

Best Food Forward!
Nass Foods, a branch of Nass Corporation B.S.C., has been providing Bahrain with some of the most recognised American food brands from the USA since it was established in 1982. Operating as an importer, wholesaler, retailer and supplier of premium quality frozen, chilled and dry food, Nass Foods is a sign of quality.
Over the past 41 years, Nass Foods has been one of the preferred food supplychain companies in the region, a trusted leader in the supply of specialised meat products to top hotels and caterers, supermarkets and hypermarkets in the Kingdom. Through Nass Foods, a number of American food brands including Midamar and Butterball, an essential during the festive season, have graced the island! When the weather amps up in summer, international premium brands of ice creams like Oreo, Kitkat, Cadbury, Nestle, Toblerone, Daim and Del Monte are all distributed by the company too.
However, Nass Foods’ premium meat products are its specialty. Its main imports are from the USA, but also from countries such as New Zealand, Brazil, Netherlands and Australia. Succulent steaks, backyard BBQ options and tender roasts are all available by order on the Nass Foods app.
To meet demand, the company has a massive storage capacity, which includes freezers, chillers and dry stores, and a distribution system that covers seven days a week. It comprises a fleet of freezer vans, trucks, mini buses and vans. Its wholesale outlets in Manama and Hamad Town cater to the wholesale needs of Bahrainis’ growing food requirements.
Of course, Nass Foods’ operations could not exist without suppliers and the company continues to explore carefullyselected partnerships in a number of countries as it aims to maintain its reputation as one of the GCC’s most important importers and distributors. One of the main American suppliers is the American Foods Group, a family-owned business based in the Midwest of the US. The partnership between Nass Foods and AFG typifies the quality and care needed to ensure that Bahrain receives the finest imports. All beef provided by AFG comes from North American cattle raised on rural ranches and feed yards, and most importantly, is all Halal certified.
American Mission Hospital: Pioneers in Healthcare
His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, addressing Bahrain’s American expatriate community in April 2018, said: “Over a century ago, an intrepid young American named Samuel Zwemer travelled from New Jersey to Arabia with a noble mission in his heart. The medical dispensary he opened in Manama became a hospital that has saved countless lives.
“This hospital is a testament to the American generosity of spirit – and a reminder of what we have in common. Here, in Bahrain, we have a hospital founded by a Christian mission, alongside mosques and churches, synagogues and temples.
“In the USA, people of all faiths come to live the American Dream. We may be different nations, but we are united by this proud tradition of tolerance. Together, we share the dream of a world where we can all live alongside each other in peace and prosperity.”
These words of HM King Hamad, on Samuel Zwemer, the founder of American Mission Hospital, are indicative of the early US relations with Bahrain, which have only grown from strength to strength over the decades.
After arriving in Bahrain on December 7, 1892, Samuel Zwemer set up a dispensary to which people came for medicines, medical treatments, and minor surgeries. His clinic was located in the souq near the renowned Bab Al Bahrain area. The Bab Al Bahrain arch itself, however, was not built until almost 60 years later, in 1949.
In 1896, on a visit to Baghdad, Zwemer met Amy Wilkes, an Australian missionary nurse at a hospital. The fact that she was a registered nurse trained in Sydney and serving in Mesopotamia, must have made him consider
her as an ideal companion for life. So, they married at the British Consulate there.
Once back in Bahrain, the couple ran the medical dispensary and conducted minor surgeries. But they kept writing to the ‘Arabian Mission’, headquartered in New York, that Bahrain needed a full-fledged hospital.
So, in 1900, with the coming of a doctorcouple Dr. Sharon J Thoms and Dr. Marion Wells Thoms, who were medical graduates from Michigan State University, and now Bahrain’s first modern physicians, the formal healthcare movement in Bahrain started.
Thanks to the permission of the then Hakim of Bahrain, Shaikh
Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, a piece of land was purchased in Manama, and the Mason Memorial Hospital was built and opened on January 26, 1903. Over time, however, it became known as the American Mission Hospital.
Soon, Zwemer’s persuasive skills, through his prolific writing and through his preaching, which he did during his US tours in early 1900s, motivated many doctors, nurses, paramedics and teachers to join the mission.
Both Dr. Sharon J Thoms and Dr. Stanley Mylrea, who served in Bahrain in 1910s, went on to set up the American Mission Hospitals in Muscat and Kuwait respectively. Dr. Paul Harrison and Dr. Louis P Dame used to visit Riyadh, to treat the family of Ibn Saud – who later became the first king of Saudi Arabia – and thousands of patients in Nejd, Arabia.
Dr. Harold Storm used to visit Qatar and the Trucial States (which became UAE, later) to serve the people in those regions. Until after the oil boom in 1940s, when the local governments were able to set up government healthcare facilities, it was, in fact, the American Mission Hospitals that offered modern healthcare.
On 26 January 2023, exactly 120 years after the first hospital in the region opened, the new King Hamad American Mission Hospital opened in Bahrain, making it the fifth and the largest of the facilities of the American Mission Hospital in Bahrain.
Modern healthcare, of over 130 years, is but just one of the many sectors which bring the two nations, US and Bahrain, together.
PLAYING OUR PART Healthcare Pioneers
The American doctor-couple, graduates from the University of Michigan, arrived in Bahrain in 1900.
With Samuel Zwemer, who had been here since 1892, these first modern physicians of Bahrain led the construction of GCC’s first hospital, the Mason Memorial Hospital. It opened on 26 January 1903.
Exactly 120 years later, on 26 January 2023, the new KHAMH, or King Hamad American Mission Hospital, opened in A’Ali.
KHAMH has now become the fifth, the largest, and the most state-of-the-art medical facility of this not-forprofit healthcare network - serving Bahrain since 1890s.

Taste of America!
Ric’s Country Kitchen has been an institution in Bahrain since 2001, serving up hearty portions to hungry diners eager for a homemade American food fix. Now under new management, Kristian Harrison checked out the restaurant to put it to the taste test.
Everyone has a story to tell about Ric’s. Many a good night (and morning – those breakfasts!) have been spent within the walls of its converted villa – an iconic outlet nestled in a corner of Juffair.
My last trip there was pre-Covid, and unfortunately since then the original owner Rick Abernathy has passed away. After a rocky period, new management took over the operation just a few months ago, and the friendly team were more than happy to invite us to try out their new Ric’s and gave us a Great American Welcome.
The restaurant’s interior is definitely cosier than I remember, with eclectic décor encompassing everything from US state flags, pottery ware, old photographs of famous guests and Native American artwork.
Ric’s menu is classic diner fare, with huge American, British and Tex-Mex breakfasts, burgers, soups, sandwiches, hot dogs and steaks.
To ease myself in for the feast to come, I started off with a Tomato Soup with Garlic Bread, and was immediately impressed with the creaminess of the soup but also its tangy, slightly spicy taste. I also tucked into the Chicken Caesar Salad and was pleased to see that the chef had been extremely generous with the chicken, croutons and dressing rather than just piling it with lettuce.
After that it was time to get stuck into meatier fare and the Smoked Chicken Wings did not disappoint; tender on their own but even nicer when dipped in the accompanying garlic dip. However, I must say they were outshone by the Dynamite Chicken which was simply phenomenal, with the perfectly-crisped chicken elevated by the sweet-yet-spicy sauce. All of this great food was making me thirsty, so I plumped for one of the many mocktails on offer, a Pineapple and Chilli Mojito (a little spicier than I was expecting!).
Next were the Nachos which were loaded with plentiful beef, refried beans, chilli, jalapenos, tomatoes and melted cheese. I appreciated the
fact that the tortilla chips were crunchy freshly-made rather than out of a packet or slightly stale.
When the mains arrived, I first tried the BBQ Sandwich, which was packed with filling and textured well with the smoky BBQ sauce, although I think BBQ beans would have perhaps complemented it better than the Pinto Beans I tried. Luckily, the Coleslaw was up to scratch.
The centrepiece of the evening was the Rib Eye Steak, a 12oz beauty served with mashed potato, vegetables and Texas toast. Choosing medium-rare for the steak, I was pleased to see the chef get that particular balance right and not be either too tough or undercooked. There was also very little fat on the cut so I could enjoy the meaty goodness to the full, while the mushroom sauce accentuated the flavour.
After a short break and a palate cleanser, I had just the tiniest sliver of room for dessert. The Apple Pie was phenomenal, with the thick wedge emphasising no corners were cut on either the pastry or the filling. I also appreciated the dollop of vanilla ice cream on top to ease it down.
Overall, I was immensely satisfied with my visit and it is great to see Ric’s back on its feet again with great food to match its welcoming vibe. Here’s to many more memories!
A FRESH TAKE ON A CROWD FAVOURITE
Ric’s Country Kitchen is a legend on these shores, with generations of visitors from across the world making it their home away from home. New management is in the door and have been working tirelessly to introduce some amazing changes that make the restaurant the best place in town.
Acraving for American food is often satisfied at Ric’s Country Kitchen. Particularly famous are the Ric’s breakfasts, and its all-day breakfast menu features a variety of classic
and unique dishes from pancakes to omelettes to breakfast steaks and classic American-style biscuits that will satisfy your cravings any time of day.
It’s not just the menu that makes Ric’s stand out in the crowd. The restaurant boasts a great ambience that is both comfortable and welcoming. Whether you’re dining alone or with friends and family, there’s a space that’s perfect for any occasion and a hearty

Ric’s also offers numerous deals, including Sunday to Wednesday Happy Hours with a flat 20 percent discount on all food and beverage from noon to 7pm. Ladies can enjoy a flat 50 percent discount every Wednesday.

NIAGARA FALLS
Situated along the Canada-US border, Niagara Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in the world. The water from Lake Erie flows into Lake Ontario over these massive waterfalls, known for the great quantity of water that is constantly tumbling over the vertical drop. Niagara Falls is actually a set of three falls: It consists of the largest section, known as Horseshoe Falls, with a drop of 187 feet; a second section on the American side of the river, known as the American Falls, with a drop of 89 feet; and a much thinner section located next to the American Falls, known as Bridal Veil Falls, with a drop of 78 feet.
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
With dramatic peaks and pristine lakes, Yellowstone National Park, mostly in Wyoming, is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Fun fact: it was America’s first national park and is bigger than Rhode Island! Multicoloured pools swirl around hot springs; verdant forests weave past expansive meadows and volatile geysers launch streams of steaming water toward the sky. With so much unspoiled natural beauty, it’s no wonder why everyone suspected John Colter (a scout for explorers Lewis and Clark) was embellishing when he first described Yellowstone’s geothermal curiosities in 1807. While you traverse its 3,000-plus square miles of mountains, canyons, geysers and waterfalls, be prepared to share the trails with permanent residents like buffalo, elk and sometimes even grizzlies.

Backpackers take to the rugged John Muir trail, named for the writer who helped create the park in 1890.
The legendary Pacific Coast Highway was first started in the 1930s, and remains a marvel of human effort that hugs over 900km of California’s rugged and beautiful coastlines. It is one of the most astoundingly scenic roads in the world, meant to be traversed slowly, while gasping at the mountains, towering trees, expansive beaches and endless sky. It also affords travellers an unparalleled opportunity to dip into all the character California has to offer: pioneer outposts, surfing villages, farm-fresh foods, local wine, roadside kitsch, Hollywood glitz and bohemia.
The United States is a diverse, beautiful country with a multitude of climates and landscapes. The most popular tourist hotspots are already well-established, an inescapable consequence of popular culture. Therefore, we’ve decided to shift attention away from iconic landmarks and cities and instead feature a selection of some of the finest natural hotspots for those wanting a leisurely hike or a breath-taking view.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK
Rocky Mountain National Park in northern Colorado encompasses 415 square miles of breath-taking, protected mountain wilderness. With more than 300 miles of trails, panoramic vistas of snow-capped peaks, picturesque meadows, valleys and meandering rivers, not to mention Trail Ridge Road (the highest continuous paved road in the United States, hitting 12,183ft in elevation), the choose-your-own-adventure options are endless. Hike it, bike it, fish it, climb it, drive it, camp it, photograph it … or all of the above.
GRAND CANYON
Okay, we admit, you might have heard of this one. After all, this incredible natural attraction is one of the most visited places in the United States. Carved out by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon cuts deep into the landscape, creating dramatic cliff walls and ledges. Visitors standing on the rim of the canyon can see down to the canyon floor a mile below, and look out over the ridges and cliffs that run as far as the eye can see.
HAWAI’I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
Visit Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park for a chance to get up close and personal with two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. The latter continually erupts, which visitors can witness from multiple points in the park, including Crater Rim Drive and the famous Chain of Craters Road. The scenic lookout offers expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and the ancient village of Kealakomo.
ARCHES NATIONAL PARK
Located north of Moab, Utah, Arches National Park is so named for the 2,000 windsculpted sandstone arches gracing the area – the largest such concentration in the world. The most famous of these is the iconic 52ft-tall Delicate Arch, whose image can be seen on Utah license plates, but Arches will amaze you with its sheer range of soaring pinnacles, massive rock fins and giant balanced rocks. Arches is also one of the few national parks where many of the top formations can be seen from the comfort of your car – perfect for those who want the sights without the sweat.
