Along with the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) and the Institute of Vision of Paris, the Barraquer Foundation is participating in a pioneering technology project to implant a new artificial retina that opens the doors to restoring the eyesight of blind people.
Having just started one of the last experimental phases before being used in humans, the application of this new technique could be a real revolution in the field of ophthalmology, thanks to the use of graphene, a highly conductive material which is very flexible and light.
Beginning in 2015, the objective of the project, called i-VISION (Adaptive Retinal Implant Technology for Vision Restoration), is to develop retinal prosthesis technology capable of offering high visual acuity to blind people suffering from diseases of the outer layer of the retina, including retinitis pigmentosa, age-associated macular degeneration or Stargardt disease.
In Spain, there are currently more than 15,000 and 700,000 people affected by retinitis pigmentosa and age-associated macular degeneration, respectively. Although in both cases the photoreceptor cells—responsible for converting light into nerve impulses

Avance contra la ceguera

Con las técnicas utilizadas hasta el momento, la capacidad de restaurar la visión es bastante limitada, pero con el uso del grafeno las expectativas cambian completamente.

Fase de experimentación
Tras haber finalizado el diseño del implante, un equipo de cirujanos del Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer, dirigidos por el doctor Jeroni Nadal, acaba de iniciar la fase de experimentación en animales. Una vez finalizada, el siguiente paso será validar el aparato con más experimentos en el Instituto de la Visión de París para acabar de perfilar hasta el último detalle la tecnología. Con todo, se estima que la prótesis esté lista para ser utilizada por las primeras personas enfermas dentro de unos dos años.
“Es muy emocionante poder aportar nuestros conocimientos y experiencia en este proyecto tan innovador y revolucionario en el campo de la visión artificial”, asegura el doctor Jeroni Nadal. “Nuestra participación en investigaciones multidisciplinares como esta es una muestra más de nuestro compromiso con la ciencia, la innovación y, sobre todo, la búsqueda de soluciones para mejorar la vida de nuestros pacientes”, añade.
Los resultados obtenidos hasta el momento son fruto de muchos años de investigación y de la colaboración de científicos procedentes de distintos centros punteros. Experimental phase

The results obtained so far are the result of many years of research and the collaboration between scientists from leading centres. El proyecto i-VISION fue galardonado el año pasado en la II edición de las Becas de Investigación en Salud de la Fundación “La Caixa”. Esta iniciativa se seleccionó entre un total de 22 proyectos de las 632 propuestas para actuar en ámbitos como la oncología, las enfermedades infecciosas o la neurociencia.
En el Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer ya contamos con experiencia en el ámbito de la visión artificial a través del proyecto ARGUS II, que en 2016 permitió implantar el primer ojo biónico o retina artificial y devolver la visión a tres primeras personas en España, aunque con ciertas limitaciones que ahora, con el nuevo sistema todavía en fase experimental, se pretenden mejorar. ■

Located in Hospitalet de Llobregat, the Pineda School is a Generalitat of Catalonia-subsidised centre that encompasses all educational stages, from primary to secondary school, offering quality educational to families in the majority of the Gornal neighbourhood. El programa Mirem per tu de la Fundación Barraquer sigue creciendo para ayudar a los colectivos más vulnerables de la ciudad; dentro de estos colectivos hay algunos, como la infancia en riesgo de exclusión social, que se ha visto especialmente perjudicado por la crisis sanitaria y económica que estamos viviendo. Por ello, el patronato de la entidad ha decidido priorizar durante el año 2021 la atención a la infancia con pocos recursos, firmando nuevas alianzas con entidades sociales que trabajan específicamente en este ámbito de actuación. Obviamente, seguiremos atendiendo a todo tipo de pacientes y ayudando a los usuarios de las más de veinte entidades que forman parte del programa, pero de cara a este nuevo año que acaba de empezar, queremos prestar especial atención a aquellos niños y niñas de nuestro entorno que peor lo están pasando en estos momentos de dificultad.

se incorpora al programa “Mirem per tu”
La Fundació Pere Tarrés, con 60 años de experiencia, es una organización no lucrativa educativa y de acción social que nació con la finalidad de promover la educación en el tiempo libre de niños y jóvenes. Dedicada al voluntariado, la mejora de la intervención social y el fortalecimiento del tejido asociativo, con el tiempo su acción se ha ampliado a otros ámbitos de la acción social como la formación, la investigación y la gestión. Entre sus proyectos solidarios cabe destacar los 30 centros de soporte socioeducativo que la entidad gestiona en Cataluña, en los que se atienden cada año a más de 3.700 niños, niñas y adolescentes en riesgo de exclusión social.
Cuando las circunstancias lo permitan, la Fundación Barraquer desplazará a un equipo de oftalmólogos y optometristas a uno de los centros de la Fundación Pere Tarrés para realizar revisiones integrales de la salud visual a los niños y niñas previamente seleccionados por la entidad. Mientras tanto, los usuarios de la Fundació Pere Tarrés que presenten patologías oculares o precisen soluciones optométricas podrán tratarse en las instalaciones del Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer o en cualquiera de las tiendas que General Óptica tiene repartidas por toda Cataluña.

Foundation joins the “Mirem per tu” programme
With 60 years’ experience, the Pere Tarrés Foundation is a non-profit educational and social action organisation that came about to promote education during the spare time of children and teenagers. Committed to promoting education during free time, volunteer work, improved social intervention and enhancing the associative network, over time its efforts have spread to other social action settings like training, research and management. Its charity projects include 30 social education support centres run by the organisation itself in Catalonia, where they help over 3,700 children at risk of social exclusion every year.

En esta ocasión, nos alegra anunciar la colaboración iniciada recientemente con la Fundació Privada Trinijove, una entidad de reconocido prestigio que lleva más de 35 años trabajando en el ámbito de la formación y la inserción laboral en el barrio de la Trinitat Vella. Además de estas actividades, en Trinijove desarrollan también varios programas sociales orientados a la infancia y a las familias en situación de vulnerabilidad. A partir de ahora, Fundación Barraquer, a través del Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer y General Óptica, ofrecerá asistencia oftalmológica y optométrica a los usuarios y empleados de la Fundació Trinijove y Trinijove Empresa d’Inserció, S.L. que tengan problemas de salud visual y no dispongan de los recursos necesarios para tratarse. Más adelante, cuando las circunstancias lo permitan, organizaremos también una jornada de revisiones integrales de la salud visual en las instalaciones de la entidad.
El pasado 2 de febrero, el Sr. Alberto Giraldo, Presidente de la Fundació Trinijove, y la Dra. Mª Isabel Canut, patrona de la Fundación Barraquer, firmaron el acuerdo entre ambas entidades. ■

The family of Mirem per tu programme beneficiary organisations continues to grow. On this occasion, we’re delighted to announce a recent partnership with the Fundació Privada Trinijove, an organisation of recognised prestige that has been working in the area of training and workplace integration in the Trinitat Vella neighbourhood for more than 35 years. In addition to these activities, Trinijove also runs social programmes for vulnerable children and families. From now on, by way of the Barraquer Ophthlamology Centre and General Óptica, the Barraquer Foundation will offer ophthalmic and optometric care to the users and employees of the Fundació Trinijove and Trinijove Empresa d’Inserció, S.L. who have eye problems and do not have the resources needed to get treatment. Further down the line, when circumstances permit, we’ll organise a full eye check-up day at the organisation’s facilities.
On 2 February, Mr. Alberto Giraldo, President of the Fundació Trinijove, and Dr. Maria Isabel Canut, trustee of the Barraquer Foundation, signed the agreement between the two organisations. ■

Pocos pacientes han estado tan unidos y durante tanto tiempo al COB como Enrique Soriano
Unos años después de su nacimiento se iniciaron las obras del emblemático edificio del Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer, convirtiéndose así en el primer centro monográfico especializado en oftalmología de España.
A los 8 años de edad los padres de Enrique detectaron que tenía alguna dificultad en la vista. El Centro recién inaugurado ya era un lugar de prestigio a nivel internacional, y un orgullo y un privilegio para los barceloneses.
Su primera visita se convirtió en una aventura que nunca olvidaría. Recuerda cómo fue la primera vez que vio al Dr. Ignacio Barraquer: “no solo era una eminencia a nivel profesional si no que su trato fue muy amable y cariñoso, sus manos parecían de seda, las tenía muy suaves”. El edificio, los espacios por los que pasó hasta llegar a la consulta del doctor, la sala del Zodíaco, las esculturas clásicas de los pasillos, las referencias artísticas de Egipto, le impresionaron tanto que lo explica con brillo en los ojos: “Parecía que estaba en un museo clásico”. “En el despacho del doctor las fotos de los artistas de la época, Maurice Chevalier, Josephine Baker, Jeanette McDonald…, adornaban la pared y la música sonaba”.
La visita fue muy bien, le recetaron gafas, el Dr. Ignacio Barraquer le dijo: “las gafas deben ser siempre pequeñas, por la medida de tu cabeza y la distancia de tus ojos y recuerda, montura siempre pequeña aunque se rían de ti”, y siguió su consejo hasta que las modas no se lo permitieron. Al cabo de unos años volvió a visitarse por unos orzuelos, fue operado por el doctor y nos cuenta: “no noté nada, hacía las cosas tan bien y de tal manera que era imposible notar nada”. Tuvo la suerte de que el Prof. Joaquín Barraquer se convirtió en su médico y los días que lo visitó “trabajaba con la Dra. Uxó, era su ayudante en ese momento y muy buena doctora”.
Y con el paso del tiempo Enrique se siguió visitando en el Centro con otros doctores como el Dr. Picó, el Dr. Lamarca, la Dra. De Faria, el Dr. Lázaro y de todos ellos dice haber recibido un trato excelente e inmejorable, al igual que del resto del personal de la clínica y de la Fundación Barraquer.
Llegó la jubilación y, con ella, uno de los logros de los que Enrique se siente más orgulloso y que queremos mencionar. Creó en el año 2004 la Asociación de Perceptores de Pensiones no Contributivas que, gracias a su actividad, logró la aprobación por parte del Parlament de Catalunya en el año 2006 del aumento de la prestación.
Actualmente vive en Cornellà de Llobregat (Barcelona), en unas viviendas tuteladas por Caritas donde se siente feliz y agradecido y sigue acudiendo al Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer a hacerse sus controles anuales. Quizás su filosofía de vida le ha ayudado a seguir adelante todos estos años: “Hacer el bien cada vez que uno puede, amar la libertad por encima de todo y nunca negar la verdad, aunque sea ante un trono” (Ludwig van Beethoven). ■

SOCIAL WORKER AT THE BARRAQUER FOUNDATION
Few patients have been so close to the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre for as long Enric Soriano.
Some years after his birth, the building works on the emblematic Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre building began, becoming the first single specialism ophthalmology centre in Spain.
At the age of 8, Enric’s parents noticed that he had some difficulty seeing. The recently opened Centre had already garnered international prestige, and was an honour and a privilege for Barcelona’s residents.
Enric’s first visit turned into an adventure he’d never forget. He remembers the first time he saw Dr. Ignacio Barraquer. “He wasn’t just a leading professional figure he was also so kind and caring, his hands were silky-smooth,” he says. The building, the areas he walked through before reaching the Doctor’s consultancy, the Zodiac room, the classic sculptures in the corridors and the artistic references to Egypt, impressed Enric. “It was like being in a classic museum,” he explains with a twinkle in his eye. “His room was full of photos of artists of that period, Maurice Chevalier, Josephine Baker, Jeanette McDonald... and he played music too. The visit went really well, they prescribed him glasses and Ignacio Barraquer told him, “your glasses must always be small because of the size of your head and the distance between your eyes. And remember, the frames should always be small even if people laugh at you.” He followed his advice until fashion no longer permitted. After some years, he went back to see about his sties. He tells us, “I didn’t feel a thing, he did everything so well, it meant I didn’t notice anything.” He was fortunate enough to have Prof. Joaquin become his doctor and whenever he visited him “...he was working with Dr. Uxó, who was his assistant at that time and a very good doctor,” Enric explains.
The years went by and Enric continued visiting the Centre seeing Dr. Pico, Dr. Lamarca, Dr. De Faria and Dr. Lázaro, all of whom gave him excellent and unrivalled care, just like the rest of the clinic and Barraquer Foundation staff.
Retirement came and with it one of Enric’s proudest achievements and one we cannot fail to mention. In 2004, he founded the Asociación de Perceptores de Pensiones no Contributivas (Non-contributory Pension Scheme Association) and thanks to his efforts, an increase in this benefit was approved by the Parliament of Catalonia in 2006.
He currently lives in Cornellà de Llobregat (Barcelona) in one of the houses overseen by the Caritas charity where he feels happy and thankful. He continues attending the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre to have annual check-ups. Perhaps his life philosophy has helped him to keep going all these years: “To do good whenever one can, to love liberty above all else, never to deny the truth, even though it be before the throne” (Ludwig van Beethoven).■
