La agudeza visual es la capacidad de nuestro sistema visual para distinguir detalles de forma nítida a una distancia y condiciones determinadas. Por tanto, nos indica la posibilidad de ver detalles de un objeto sobre un fondo uniforme o de ver que dos objetos muy cercanos están, efectivamente, separados.
La agudeza visual se mide mediante optotipos que el paciente tiene que identificar, tanto en visión lejana como leyendo en visión próxima. El optotipo más conocido es el test de Snellen, que consiste en filas de letras o números que van de tamaño más grande a más pequeño. La última fila que un paciente pueda leer correctamente determina su agudeza visual y se describe con un valor decimal (1,0) o con un porcentaje (100%).
La medición de la agudeza visual es una prueba que resulta indispensable en todo examen visual ya que nos indica exactamente la visión que tiene el paciente y, en caso de estar disminuida, puede evidenciar la existencia de alguna patología ocular como cataratas, degeneración macular asociada a la edad (DMAE) o retinopatía diabética, entre otras. ■ La medición de la agudeza visual es una prueba que resulta indispensable en todo examen visual ya que nos indica exactamente la visión que tiene el paciente

►WHAT IS VISUAL ACUITY?
Visual acuity is our visual system’s ability to distinguish details clearly from a distance and under specific conditions. Therefore, it shows us the possibility of seeing details of an object on a uniform background or of seeing that two very close objects are, in fact, separate.
Visual acuity is measured with optotypes that the patient has to identify using their far sight and also reading using their near sight. The most well known optotype is the Snellen test, which involves lines of letters or numbers ranging from large to small. The last line that a patient can read properly determines their visual acuity and it is described with a decimal value (1.0) or a percentage (100%).
Visual acuity measurement is a an essential part of any eye test as it tells us the patient’s exact vision and, if it has gotten worse, it can show the existence of an eye pathology including cataracts, age-associated macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy. ■

Habitualmente, nuestros pacientes tienen sus visitas programadas con mucho tiempo de antelación. Así, pueden organizar sus compromisos médicos y personales con tiempo. The Covid-19 pandemic occurred without warning in March.
Usually, our patients schedule their visits well in advance. This allows them to organise their medical and personal commitments in good time. When lockdown was decreed (at our Centre we were a few days ahead of the official date), we advised our patients who had scheduled appointments to cancel them, in addition to asking about their health, of course. From that time, working from home marked our daily routine and even today it’s a tool we use to minimise risks, both to our staff as well as our patients.
Clinical trial protocols The implementation of clinical trials is connected to a protocol created by the laboratory sponsoring the study. Upon cancelling appointments during lockdown, we broke the protocol, although with a good reason to

Desde el mes de mayo, las visitas se realizan con todas las medidas de seguridad propuestas por el Centro (pacientes sin acompañantes, mascarilla obligatoria, etc.), reanudando así la actividad asistencial con el mínimo riesgo posible.
Han sido momentos duros, en los que hemos recibido noticias tristes, como el fallecimiento de algún paciente, sin poder despedirnos como nos hubiera gustado. Pero el espíritu de superación nos empuja a seguir trabajando, con todo nuestro entusiasmo y dedicación para ofrecer la mejor atención a nuestros pacientes. ■ do so.
