Wstęp

Introduction

W 1992 roku Stefan Klincewicz – polski biznesmen w Irlandii – postanowił przechytrzyć tamtejszy system Lotto. Wrócił do zagadnienia prawdopodobieństwa, sformułowanego po raz pierwszy przez hazardzistów, by wzbogacić się przy tym i udowodnić skończoność tej wersji systemu.

Wraz z 28-osobowym zespołem obliczył on bowiem, że obstawienie 80% możliwości sześciu trafień z kombinacji trzydziestu sześciu liczb pozwoli na uzyskanie większego dochodu niż początkowa suma i praca włożona w półroczny trud wypełniania ponad ćwierć miliona kuponów.

Operacja zakończona sukcesem dowiodła, że możliwość radykalnej zmiany życia jest możliwa.

W nieco innych warunkach zbliżoną akcję wcześniej przeprowadził amerykański artysta, Douglas Huebler. W lipcu 1969 roku rozpoczął trwającą 25 lat wysyłkę stu kopert zawierających po jednym banknocie jednodolarowym z dołączonym krótkim listem. Treść kusiła adresatów informacją, że ktokolwiek z nich odeśle jednodolarówkę z powrotem, otrzyma tysiąc dolarów w zamian. Cyrkulacja banknotów miała według artysty skutecznie uwolnić działanie artystyczne z dyskursu produkcji świata sztuki. Pytanie o to, czy bardziej opłacalny jest gwarantowany zysk – coś realnego od razu, czy też potencjalność kredytu, miało otworzyć logikę reprezentacji i spektaklu na kolektywne działania sieciowe i jednocześnie komentować nowopowstającą sztukę konceptualną.

In 1992, Stefan Klincewicz, Polish businessman in Ireland, decided to outsmart the Irish Lotto system. He returned to the issue of probability, formulated for the first time by gamblers, in order to prove the finite character of that particular version of the system and get rich at the same time. Together with a team of 28 people, he calculated that betting 80% of possible lucky numbers from the combination of 36 numbers will deliver more income than the invested money and the worth of half-year’s work on filling in more than 250,000 tickets.

The successful outcome of the operation proved that a radical change of one’s life is indeed possible. A similar action was carried out in slightly different circumstances by Douglas Huebler, American artist. In July 1969 he embarked on the 25-year long process of sending out one hundred envelopes with a one-dollar banknote each. The addressees were tempted by the promise of a 1000-dollar reward upon sending the letter back. According to the artist, the circulation of banknotes was to effectively liberate artistic activity from the production discourse of the artworld. The question about what pays off more – a secure profit, something tangible and immediate or rather a potential credit – was to open the logic of representation and spectacle to collective networking actions and at the same time deliver a commentary on the newly emerging conceptual art.

Ludzie od zawsze próbują rozgryźć rozmaite loterie i to z przeróżnych stron – od pseudonaukowych teorii liczb, przez ezoterykę, wyciągniętą z lamusa magię, techniki przewidywania numerów na podstawie snów, kwadratu Jowisza itp. Upór i pasja, jakie towarzyszą grze, osiągają swe apogeum we wszelakich systemach mających zapewnić wygraną poprzez odkrycie tajemnicy losujących maszyn.

Szukanie sensu w bezsensie, wiary, nadziei jest tu zarówno światełkiem w tunelu, jedyną szansą dla osób, którym nie pozostała już żadna inna opcja poprawienia swojego statusu, jak również próbą znalezienia drogi na skróty, pozwalającą zdobyć nieskończoną przewagę nad innymi.

Zmaganie umysłu ze światem nie jest tu wyłącznie panoramą możliwości, które pozwalają wygrać dzięki wykorzystaniu szeregu niekonwencjonalnych, jak i matematycznych środków, ale jest także „rzeźbą ekonomiczną w przestrzeni publicznej”. Działanie to nawiązuje do alchemicznego transmutatio metallorum – przemiany nieszlachetnych metali w złoto, które przekształciło budżet państwowego dofinansowania – obarczonego całą siecią regulacji – poprzez systemy totolotka. Totolotek umożliwia tu jednocześnie społeczny i estetyczny cel transmutacji, stając się środkiem dla wspierania kultury niezależnej.

The same steps are followed by Janek Simon and Szymon Wichary – artist and psychologist, who explain the complexity of human mentality that vests faith in countless methods allowing to succeed in lotteries. People have always attempted to outsmart various lotteries by different approaches – from pseudoscientific theories of numbers, through esoterism, dusted off magic, techniques of predicting numbers on the basis of dreams, Jupiter squares etc.

Persistence and passion that accompany the game reach their peak with systems that are to guarantee winning through the discovery of the lottery machines secrets. The searching for sense in the senseless, the quest for faith and hope is here equally like a beacon in the darkness, a unique chance for people with no other possibility of enhancing their status, and like an attempt to find a shortcut, enabling to outdo others on an infinite scale.

The struggle of the mind with the world is not limited to the array of possibilities that enable us to win owing to the application of a range of unconventional and mathematical means, but also constitutes an ‘economic sculpture in urban space’. The action evokes the alchemical transmutatio metallorum – transformation of base metals into gold, which reshaped the state budget financing – burdened with plethora of regulations – through Lotto systems.

At the same time, Lotto allows for a social and aesthetic purpose of transmutation, becoming the means of supporting independent culture.

About the authors

Francis Galton Żył w latach 1822–1911. Angielski podróżnik, przyrodnik, antropolog, eugenik, wynalazca, meteorolog, pisarz, lekarz, psychometra i statystyk, prekursor badań nad inteligencją. W 1909 roku nadano mu tytuł szlachecki. Autor ponad 340 dzieł. Stworzył teoretyczną koncepcję korelacji i regresji do średniej. Jako pierwszy zastosował metody statystyczne do studiowania ludzkich różnic indywidualnych i dziedziczenia inteligencji oraz wprowadził kwestionariusze i ankiety do zbierania danych na temat społeczności ludzkich. Był pionierem eugeniki, sam utworzył ten termin, jest też twórcą sformułowania nature versus nurture (co kształtuje człowieka, geny czy wychowanie?).

Jako badacz ludzkiego umysłu, utworzył podwaliny psychometrii i psychologii różnic indywidualnych. Stworzył metodę klasyfikacji odcisków palców. Był pionierem naukowej meteorologii – był autorem pierwszej mapy pogody, zaproponował teorię antycyklonów i był pierwszym, który stworzył kompletny zapis krótkoterminowych zjawisk meteorologicznych na skalę Europy.

Wynalazł także tzw. piszczałkę Galtona, przyrząd do badania różnic słuchu.

Francis Galton Lived 1822–1911, was an English Victorian polymath, anthropologist, eugenicist, tropical explorer, geographer, inventor, meteorologist, proto-geneticist, psychometrician, and statistician. He was knighted in 1909. Galton had a prolific intellect, and produced over 340 papers and books throughout his lifetime. He also created the statistical concept of correlation and widely promoted regression toward the mean. He was the first to apply statistical methods to the study of human differences and inheritance of intelligence, and introduced the use of questionnaires and surveys for collecting data on human communities.

He was a pioneer in eugenics, coining the very term itself and the phrase nature versus nurture.

As an investigator of the human mind, he founded psychometrics (the science of measuring mental faculties) and differential psychology. He devised a method for classifying fingerprints that proved useful in forensic science. As the initiator of scientific meteorology, he devised the first weather map, proposed a theory of anticyclones, and was the first to establish a complete record of shortterm climatic phenomena on a European scale.

He also invented the Galton Whistle for testing differential hearing ability.

D. Graham Burnett Historyk nauki, od niedawna nauczyciel akademicki w ramach Christian Gauss Fund. W 2009 roku nagrodzony Mellon New Directions Fellowship. Obecnie pracuje nad związkami nauki i sztuk wizualnych. Ukończył Princeton w roku 1993, otrzymał wyróżnienienie jako drugi najlepszy absolwent roku. Zdobył stopień doktora w dziedzinie historii i filozofii nauki na Uniwersytecie Cambridge. Laureat Nagrody Nebenzahl w 1999 roku w dziedzinie historii kartografii. Współpracował przy publikacji History of Cartography Project. Zanim rozpoczął pracę w Princeton w 2001 roku, wykładał na Uniwersytecie w Yale oraz na Wydziale

D. Graham Burnett He is a historian of science, and recently held the Christian Gauss Fund University Preceptorship.

The recipient of a 2009 Mellon New Directions Fellowship, he is currently working on connections between the sciences and the visual arts.

Professor Burnett graduated from Princeton in 1993 as the salutatorian. With the support of a Marshall Scholarship he completed a Ph.D. in the History and Philosophy of Science at Cambridge University. Burnett was awarded the 1999 Nebenzahl Prize in the History of Cartography, and he has been editorially involved with the History of Cartography Project. Before joining the Princeton faculty in 2001 he taught at Yale and was a Mellon

Interesuje się historią naturalną i badaniami ziemi i morza począwszy od XVII wieku po czasy dzisiejsze, w tym kartografią, nawigacją, oceanografią i ekologią/nauką o środowisku. Badał także zagadnienia związane z historią odkryć geograficznych i optyką.

Fellow in the Humanities at Columbia University (1997–1999). His interests include the history of natural history and the sciences of the earth and the sea from the seventeenth through the twentieth centuries, including cartography, navigation, oceanography, and ecology/environmentalism. He has also worked on the history of exploration, and modern optics.

Janek Simon Urodzony w 1977 roku. Studiował socjologię i psychologię na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim.

Działalność artystyczną rozpoczął około 2001 roku. Jako VJ Jansi współpracował z grupą Commbo, tworząc wizualizacje do muzyki w klubach oraz z fundacją 36,6. Jest autorem instalacji interaktywnych, filmów wideo, obiektów i akcji artystycznych. Źródłem jego inspiracji stały się gry komputerowe, internet i szeroko pojęte archiwum. Mieszka i pracuje w Krakowie.

Janek Simon Born in 1977. Studied sociology and psychology at the Jagiellonian University. Began his artistic activity in 2001. As VJ Jansi, collaborated with the Commbo group on music visualisations in nightclubs and with the 36,6 foundation. Author of interactive installations, videos, objects and artistic actions. He draws inspiration from computer games, the Internet and archives in the broad sense of the term. Lives and works in Cracow.

Szymon Wichary Adiunkt w Interdyscyplinarnym Centrum Stosowanych Badań Poznawczych w Szkole Wyższej Psychologii Społecznej w Warszawie. Studia magisterskie w zakresie psychologii ukończył w 1999 roku na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim w Krakowie. Tytuł doktora nauk humanistycznych w zakresie psychologii otrzymał w 2004 roku, również na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim. W latach 2000/2001 i 2003 roku przebywał na stażach badawczych w Max Planck Institute for Human Development w Berlinie. Od 2004 do 2006 roku zatrudniony na stanowisku asystenta w Instytucie Psychologii Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego. Od 2006 roku adiunkt w Szkole Wyższej Psychologii Społecznej w Warszawie. Prowadzi badania naukowe w zakresie psychologii procesów poznawczych, psychologii podejmowania decyzji, psychologii różnic indywidualnych oraz psychologii ewolucyjnej. Współpracuje z badaczami z Instytutu Maxa Plancka w Berlinie, z Uniwersytetu w Bazylei i z Uniwersytetu Kalifornijskiego w Los Angeles.

Szymon Wichary Assistant professor at the Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Cognitive Studies of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw. 1999 graduate of MA studies in psychology at the Jagiellonian University, where he also received a Ph.D. in psychology in 2004. In 2000/2001 and 2003 he attended scholarships of Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin. Between 2004–2006 held an assistant position at the Institute of Psychology of the Jagiellonian University.

Since 2006, assistant professor at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw. Researcher into psychology of cognitive processes, psychology of decision-making, differential psychology and evolutionary psychology. Cooperates with researchers from the Max Planck Institute in Berlin, University in Basel and University of California in Los Angeles.

Expecto! About the Expectative series

Jak podaje słownik Michała Arcta z 1921 roku, ekspektatywa oznacza „oczekiwanie, wyczekiwanie, ubieganie się, nadzieję”. Przedsięwzięcie to, świadomie odnosząc się do niezrealizowanych wcześniej koncepcji zbudowanych na wierze w technologię, ma na celu wymianę doświadczeń dotyczących roli postępu oraz dialogu nauki ze sztuką. W sześciu odsłonach cyklu prezentujemy różne stanowiska, metody badawcze oraz postawy twórcze.

Interesuje nas różnorodność, zachęcamy do myślenia w kategoriach eksperymentu – wzajemnej gry myśli i inspiracji, ulokowanych pomiędzy sztuką i produktywizmem, profesjonalizacją i amatorstwem, dystansem, komunikacją i społeczną transformacją.

According to Michał Arct’s dictionary of 1921, ekspektatywa (expectative) means ‘anticipation’, ‘looking forward to’, ‘striving for, hope’. The aim of the project, which is a conscious reference to the unrealized concepts that were based on faith in technology, is the exchange of experiences in the area of scientific progress and dialogue between art and science. The cycle is composed of six parts, each presenting the different positions, research methods and creative stances.

As it is variety that interests us, our objective is to encourage thinking in terms of experimentation – a mutual play of thoughts and inspirations, situated between art and productivism, professionalization and amateurship, distance, communication and social transformation.
