Seguimos con novedades en nuestra ruta con Madrid y es que Atlantis Cargo, empresa del sistema Binter y principal operador de carga aérea en Canarias, ha cerrado un acuerdo con BGlobal para aumentar el volumen gestionado aprovechando los dieciséis vuelos diarios entre el aeropuerto madrileño y los de Gran Canaria y Tenerife Norte.
Además, los viajeros que dispongan de la tarifa Flexiplus para volar entre Canarias y Madrid disfrutan de un alto nivel de flexibilidad, como adelantar o retrasar su vuelo para viajar el mismo día sin pagar ningún tipo de penalización y sin tener que esperar al mismo día del viaje. Passengers on early morning flights will be offered breakfasts with flavours such as quince with cheese and sweet potato. The gourmet appetizers served the rest of the day are also being refreshed, in this case with traditional recipes such as escaldón de gofio and salpicón of tuna and potatoes, along with a selection of Canarian cheeses. Meanwhile, the Binterpeques menus for our youngest passengers feature new content including hot dogs, mini-hamburgers and fresh fruit.
I would also like to let you know that on 21 June we achieved a new daily passenger record, with a total of 21,109 passengers carried. This achievement spurs us to continue our work on a schedule that aims to respond to the travel needs of our clients and includes a stepping up of operations to facilitate travel on key dates such as long weekends and the start of the holidays.
We have more news this month also regarding our Madrid route and that is that Atlantis Cargo, which is part of the Binter system of companies and the main air cargo operator in the Canary Islands, has signed an agreement with BGlobal to increase the volume of cargo managed by taking advantage of our sixteen daily flights connecting Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas airport and Gran Canaria and Tenerife North.
What’s more, Flexiplus fare passengers flying between the Canary Islands and Madrid benefit from a high degree of flexibility, including - among other advantages - the option of changing to an earlier or later flight to travel on the same day without incurring a fee and without having to wait until the day of the flight. These improvements apply to travel to/from any airport in the Canaries, even if a connecting flight is required.
Lastly, I would like to mention the tribute that we have paid to the Civil Guard by naming one of our ATR planes after the force as a way of highlighting its work in the islands and throughout Spain, as well as its contribution to the smooth operation of Spanish airports and their security.

Daniel García Mihalic (2006, Santa Brígida) se convirtió hace escasos meses en el primer canario en lograr un oro en las Olimpiadas Nacionales de Química y para cuando estas líneas se estén leyendo a bordo del avión, ya habrá cursado las Olimpiadas Internacionales de Arabia Saudí. Una competición que Daniel confía en ganar, pero que, en el caso de que no se diese, él ya es consciente de que ha «ganado» por llegar hasta aquí.
¿Cómo se siente al ser el primer canario que logra un oro en las Olimpiadas Nacionales de Química? De primeras no es tanto orgullo porque me topé con que ningún canario se había atrevido a hacer este tipo de competiciones. Era un poco vergonzoso. Y, sin embargo, también, por otra parte, tengo orgullo porque he demostrado que eso no tiene ninguna razón de ser, no es nada genético. Nosotros como canarios realmente también tenemos potencial y también tenemos talento. Eso es lo que hace falta, florecerlo.
¿Cómo se preparó? ¿Fue algo autodidacta? Si no me equivoco, hubo algunas comunidades que sí dieron tutorías a sus competidores; por ejemplo, Madrid o Valencia. Precisamente el equipo nacional que irá a Arabia Saudí lo forman otros tres estudiantes de Valencia, junto conmigo. Pero yo, como canario, no tuve esa oportunidad y tuve que ir completamente autodidacta, tuve que dar todo el esfuerzo por mí mismo y al final surtió bastante efecto. Sin duda. Creo que eso también demuestra que, si tú realmente te empeñas con algo, lo puedes conseguir
¿Varía en algo su preparación para la Olimpiada respecto a las internacionales de Arabia Saudí? Sí, en Arabia Saudí va a ser mucho más duro, porque, por ejemplo, en las nacionales eran tres horas de examen, y en total creo que eran como cinco horas. Las internacionales son cinco de teórico y otras cinco de laboratorio. Ahí se va a recompensar mucho la destreza mental, la resistencia de llegar a la quinta hora y saber seguir haciendo problemas y no rendirse; va a ser muy recompensante. Y en la parte práctica del laboratorio estamos hablando
A few months ago, Daniel García Mihalic (2006, Santa Brígida) became the first Canarian to win gold at the National Chemistry Olympics and, by the time you read this interview on board your flight, he will have been to the International Olympics in Saudi Arabia. It is a competition Daniel hopes to win but, should that not happen, he realises that he has already “won” by getting this far.
How does it feel to be the first Canarian to win gold at the National Chemistry Olympics? To begin with, the sense of pride is not that great because no Canarian had dared enter this type of competition before. It was a little embarrassing. And yet, on the other hand, I am proud because I have shown that there is no good reason for this absence, it is nothing genetic. In the Canaries we really have great potential and talent. What’s needed is for them to be allowed to blossom.
How did you prepare? Was it a case of self-teaching? As far as I know, some regions in Spain, for example Madrid and Valencia, provided tutoring for their contestants. Indeed, the Spanish team selected for Saudi Arabia is made up of three other students from Valencia, plus me. As a Canarian, however, I did not have that tutoring opportunity and I entered the competition entirely self-taught; I had to put in all the effort on my own and in the end it had quite an effect. No doubt. It also shows that, if you really put your mind to something, you can achieve it.
Is your preparation for the International Olympics in Saudi Arabia different to that for the National Olympics? Yes, in Saudi Arabia things will be much tougher because, for example, at the nationals there was a three-hour exam and the competition lasted a total of around five hours. The International Olympics consist of five hours of theory and another five in the laboratory. A key factor there will be mental dexterity, having the endurance to reach the fifth hour and be able to continue solving problems and not give up. It’s going to be very rewarding. The practical part in the lab will be tougher and you have to give it your all

de algo más complejo porque hay que darlo todo al ser una competencia internacional. Conseguir un puesto entre los primeros cien ya de por sí es algo que es significativo.
Estar ahí ya es casi una victoria, imagino, pero ¿se ha imaginado perdiendo? Tú mismo lo has dicho, realmente es una experiencia en la que no puedo perder. Entonces sí o sí me voy a llevar una experiencia muy bonita, muy satisfactoria. Creo que por mi capacidad y por mi potencial voy a llegar a lo alto. Si no llego tampoco pasa nada, porque ya de por sí es un gran logro el haber conseguido estar dentro de este ambiente de potencial cognitivo al máximo.

Tengo entendido que en realidad le gustaban más las mates… ¿Qué le hizo cambiar de opinión? Mi pasión eran también las matemáticas y la física. Principalmente por los divulgadores científicos, entre ellos Javier Santaolalla. Me apunté en varias Olimpiadas y en las de Química realmente no esperaba que fuera a clasificarme, pero al final lo hice. Aunque el año que viene voy a estudiar grado de Ingeniería Física y Matemática.
¿Qué se puede hacer para que Canarias esté más a la orden del día? Podemos mirar a otras comunidades. En la Comunidad Valenciana, por ejemplo, desde muy pequeños, no solo desde primaria, según van creciendo en secundaria, hay varias competiciones que fomentan el aprendizaje, el conocimiento matemático, la abstracción, para la gente que se siente apasionada por ello. No podemos hacer nada si los profesores no dan de su parte. Ellos deberían intentar cohesionar la clase y mirar quiénes tienen potencial, para propulsarlos y ayudarles a conseguir sus objetivos. NT

Just being there is already a victory, I suppose, but do you see yourself losing? As you yourself say, it is an experience in which I have nothing to lose. There are no two ways about it: I am going to have a great and highly satisfying experience. My ability and potential lead me to believe I will finish high up. If I don’t, it’s not a big deal: it is a great achievement in itself to be part of this environment of the highest cognitive ability. I had thoughts along similar lines at the National Olympics but in the end I ignored them.
I believe you were actually keener on maths… What made you change your mind? Maths and physics were also my passion. This was largely due to science outreach figures such as Javier Santaolalla. I entered several Olympics and didn't really expect to make it through in the Chemistry ones but I did in the end. However, next year I am going to start a degree in Engineering Physics and Mathematics.
What can the Canaries do to be higher up in this field? We can look to what other regions in Spain are doing. In Valencia, for example, from a very young age, from primary school through secondary school, they have various competitions to foster learning,

mathematical knowledge and conceptualisation for people who have a passion for such things. That said, we can do little if teachers don’t do their bit. They should try, as is their duty, to get the class to gel and then identify who really has lots of potential of this kind, so they can encourage them and help them achieve their goals. NT

Siempre es difícil quedarse con un solo lugar cuando se viaja. Es injusto. Depende de muchos factores: preferencias, localización, accesibilidad…; podrías preguntarles a tres palmeros por un esencial de la Isla Bonita y los tres posiblemente no coincidan en la recomendación. Pero casi que un servidor prefiere arriesgarse a decir que, si vas a viajar a La Palma y solo pudieses quedarte con un lugar, ese destino a visitar debería ser el Proís de Candelaria.
It is always difficult to pick a favourite place for travel. It’s unfair and depends on many factors: preferences, location, accessibility..., you could ask three people from La Palma about an essential spot on the so-called ‘Isla Bonita’ and they might not agree on what to recommend. However, I would venture to say that if you are going to visit La Palma and could only choose one place, it should be Proís de Candelaria.

Su nombre es debido, según la leyenda, a que un barco portugués viajaba a Puntagorda y atracó en el Proís para protegerse del fuerte temporal. A bordo de esta embarcación llevaban una imagen de la Virgen de la Candelaria, la cual decidieron bajar al puerto para evitar su deterioro. Cuando la Virgen tocó el suelo, las aguas se calmaron y la lluvia cesó. Los marineros, sorprendidos, decidieron reanudar su viaje, pero en cuanto levantaron a la Virgen, el mal tiempo volvió. Tras varios intentos fallidos de zarpar y debido a estos inexplicables cambios de clima, resolvieron dejar a la Virgen de la Candelaria en tierra y dar al pueblo su nombre.
Ir al Proís, ubicado en el municipio de Tijarafe, es sencillo: si venimos desde el aeropuerto podremos tomar las carreteras LP-3 y LP-1 hasta llegar a la calle La Molina, que nos llevará por un camino serpenteante, a través de una carretera algo estrecha, pero por la que merece la pena circular.
Una vez que lleguemos al estacionamiento habilitado, nos dirigiremos por unas escaleras que llevan hacia un sendero. El tramo que vamos a transitar no es demasiado exigente, pero sí que hay que tener especial cuidado y procurar pisar bien por la
In terms of the origins of its name, legend has it that a Portuguese ship was sailing to Puntagorda and had to take shelter in Proís from a fierce storm. On board they carried an image of the Virgin of Candelaria, which they decided to unload in the harbour to prevent it from becoming damaged. down and the rain stopped. The surprised sailors decided to resume their journey but as soon as they picked the Virgin up again the bad weather returned. After several failed attempts to set sail and due to the inexplicable changes in climate, they decided to leave the Virgin of Candelaria on land and named the town after her.

Getting to Proís, in the municipality of Tijarafe, is easy. Coming from the airport, we take the LP-3 road and then the LP-1 until we reach Calle La Molina, which marks the start of a very narrow road with many bends but that is well worth the drive.
Tranquility is the order of the day here in a location that beckons visitors from a distance
Having left our car in the parking area, we walk down the steps leading to a path. This part is not very challenging but we need to take particular care and ensure we gain a sure footing on the gravel and small stones at the beginning. After this initial section, the surface is more even and paved and the walk is much more pleasant. To our left the waves swirl as they crash against the bottom of the cliff, whose impressive drop can be seen clearly over the rope and wooden post barrier that lines the path.
It won't take us long to catch a glimpse of Porís de Candelaria and its houses built in bygone days by local fishermen to rest after the day’s fishing. Tranquility is the order of the day here in a location that, from a distance, beckons visitors to walk among its houses to reach the little cove where a swim is near-obligatory to enjoy this haven of peace. Una isla que enamora al visitante

Hay otra Gran Canaria alejada de la cosmopolita y cultural capital, de Las Canteras y las playas paradisiacas del sur, con kilómetros y kilómetros de arena rubia. Y es una isla llena de paisajes sorprendentes, que permiten la armonía entre el ser humano y la naturaleza, que nos devuelve la esperanza en un planeta sano y por la que vale la pena apostar en una escapada.
Salimos de la capital y enfilamos hasta Teror, donde admirar la arquitectura popular canaria; el lugar de peregrinación de todos los fieles de la Isla y del que uno no puede marcharse sin probar chorizos y repostería bien rica.
Bajamos hasta Arucas, con inmensas sábanas verdes de plataneras; la llamada catedral, cuyas obras, iniciadas en 1909, duraron casi setenta años; y las destilerías de Arehucas (1884).

There is another Gran Canaria, one far from its cosmopolitan and cultural capital, from Las Canteras and the idyllic beaches in the south with their golden sands that stretch for kilometres. The island is full of surprising landscapes which enable humans to be at one with a nature that restores our hope in a healthy planet and is worth devoting time to on a short visit.
From here we head to Firgas. Situated between this town and Moya is one of Gran Canaria’s top natural treasures, the Azuaje ravine, an easy walking route offering plenty of delightful scenery. And if we are still keen for more greenery and excursions, Moya is also home to the Los Tilos Natural Reserve. Once in Moya itself, you cannot leave without buying some of the famous local cakes.
De ahí pasamos a Firgas. Entre Firgas y Moya se conserva uno de los mayores tesoros naturales de la Isla, el barranco de Azuaje, un sendero que se recorre sin dificultad y que nos aportará muchas satisfacciones paisajísticas. Además, si nos quedan ganas de verde y de hacer más excursiones, en Moya se encuentra la Reserva Natural de Los Tilos. Ya en Moya no podemos irnos sin sus famosos bizcochos.
Nos queda un buen tramo hasta alcanzar Agaete, pero la recompensa vale la pena. La necrópolis del Malpaís; el granero de Valerón, con más de trescientos agujeros horadados en roca; las piscinas naturales para toda la familia; y una riquísima gastronomía con productos del mar recién capturados ese día harán esta visita inolvidable.
We drive out of the capital towards Teror, where we can admire traditional Canarian architecture. The town is a place of pilgrimage for religious-minded people across the island and you should not leave without trying its chorizo sausage and delicious pastries.
We head down towards Arucas, with its vast green blankets of banana groves, cathedral (work on which began in 1909 and lasted almost seventy years) and Arehucas rum distilleries (1884).
Although we need to drive some distance to get to Agaete, the rewards make the trip worthwhile. The Maipés prehistoric burial site; the Valerón ‘granary’ cave with over three hundred holes excavated in rock; the natural pools suitable for all the family; and the wonderful food featuring freshly caught seafood will make your visit unforgettable.

Existe un rincón gaditano que guarda el secreto de una gama de vinos únicos. Es el Marco de Jerez, formado por Sanlúcar de Barrameda, El Puerto de Santa María y la ciudad que le da nombre, zona de crianza y producción de singulares especialidades vínicas.
There is an area in Cádiz that guards the secret behind a range of unique wines. Called the Marco de Jerez and formed by Sanlúcar de Barrameda, El Puerto de Santa María and the city from which it takes its name, it is an area where uniquely special wines are produced and aged.
Las tres ciudades comparten una cultura que se arremolina en sus bodegas, en sus despachos de vinos y por supuesto en sus calles. En la hermana pequeña, Sanlúcar, es inevitable conjugar langostinos y manzanilla. Los primeros, con un exquisito sabor gracias a su hábitat, el estuario del Guadalquivir, que viene aquí a desembocar. La segunda, siempre bien fría, es una variante de jerez exclusiva de esta ciudad. Para descubrirla y degustarla, nada como un paseo por las bodegas de Barbadillo o La Gitana.
Un poco más al sur, en El Puerto de Santa María, el castillo de San Marcos, erigido por Alfonso X, abriga la bodega del Grupo Caballero, una visita tan imprescindible como la de las bodegas de Mora Osborne, con más de 250 años a sus espaldas. Cuando se abre el apetito, el marisco de la ciudad se ha ganado una merecida reputación, sin olvidarse de las coquinas, que da igual cómo se cocinen; siempre están exquisitas.
The three cities share a culture that converge in their wineries, wine shops and of course their streets. In Sanlúcar, the little sister of the trio, there is no avoiding langoustines accompanied by manzanilla sherry. The former derive their exquisite flavour from their habitat, the estuary of the River Guadalquivir, which reaches the sea here. The latter, always served ultra-cold, is a type of sherry that is exclusive to this city. To discover and try it, there is nothing like a tour of the Barbadillo or La Gitana wineries.
A little further south, in El Puerto de Santa María, stands San Marcos Castle, which was built by King Alfonso X and is home to the Grupo Caballero winery - a must visit along with the Mora Osborne wineries that date back over 250 years. If you develop an appetite, the city's seafood has a richly deserved reputation and special mention should be made of the coquina clams, which are always exquisite no matter how they are cooked.

En este pequeño itinerario te descubrimos dos lugares indispensables en un viaje por la Toscana: Monteriggioni y San Gimignano, ambos a unos sesenta kilómetros de Florencia.
In this brief itinerary we tell you about two must visits on any trip to Tuscany: Monteriggioni and San Gimignano, which are both approximately sixty kilometres from Florence.

Una ciudad medieval amurallada que yace sobre una colina, con unas casas y fortificaciones que apenas han sufrido cambios a pesar de que fue un territorio muy estratégico y con importancia bélica en los intentos de Florencia por expandirse. Esto convierte a Monteriggioni en un ejemplo de conservación del patrimonio medieval que atrae a todo el mundo a visitarla.
Para acceder al interior, tras estacionar en el parking privado del lugar, basta con cruzar el portón principal y llegar a la Piazza Roma, donde destaca su iglesia, cuyo interior se puede visitar de manera gratuita. También resalta un antiguo pozo en el centro de la plaza, y los locales gastronómicos de la zona se integran a su alrededor. En ese sentido, entre la variada oferta para deleitar las papilas gustativas, las carnes y las pastas son los platos por excelencia que recomiendan a los visitantes.
Monteriggioni
A medieval walled city that stands on a hill, with houses and fortifications that have barely changed even though it was a very strategic territory of military importance in Florence's expansion bids. All this makes Monteriggioni an example of mediaeval heritage conservation that proves an attractive visit for all.
To access the old town, after parking in the privately-run car park, just go through the main gate and head to Piazza Roma, which boasts a lovely church that is free to visit. Of interest also is the old well in the middle of the square and the restaurants in the surrounding area, which offer a variety of dishes to delight the taste buds, including meats and pastas which are the top recommendations for visitors.

San Gimignano es una ciudad también amurallada que desde la distancia ya se distingue del resto de localizaciones por el tamaño de sus torres, y es que en el pasado llegó a contar en su interior con hasta setenta y dos torres, de las que aún conserva quince, algunas de las cuales son visitables para maravillarse con sus vistas. En el interior de la fortaleza discurren grandes calles con casas y tiendas a los lados, algunas incluso con varias plantas en el subsuelo y por las que es recomendable hacer una visita aunque no vayamos a comprar, para observar las famosas obras de cerámica.

San Gimignano is also a walled town and, from afar, is distinguishable from nearby parts due to the size of its towers. In olden times it had up to seventy-two towers, of which fifteen still survive today, including some which can be visited to enjoy the amazing views. Inside the fortress town are big streets lined with houses and shops, including a number with several basement floors that are worth visiting, even if you are not going to buy anything, to observe their famous ceramics.

El litoral, las playas, los paseos marítimos… Canarias propone en pleno agosto no solo entornos aliados de sombrilla y bañador –como antaño proclamaba el topicazo–, sino una gastronomía que concilia criterios de bienestar y afinado producto local para combatir los calores. En cualquier caso, hay vida (gastronómica) más allá de los clásicos chiringuitos y el viajero va a ver colmada su satisfacción.
En el primer caso vamos orientados si en Tenerife localizamos lugares míticos en Candelaria o en Los Abrigos, por delimitar, en la isla donde comer bien es credencial. Con las lapas acotemos El Hierro –en La Restinga– y su vino prodigioso; y La Graciosa, en Caleta de Sebo, que plantea esta especialidad como boccato di cardinale
Atún, aguacate, tomate-tomate… En Gran Canaria vamos a degustar exquisiteces de la tierra y del mar de Mogán; pescado fresco (cherne, medregal), claro está. La sierpe marina nos traslada a Lanzarote, al Risco de Famara, donde el chip y un blanco de La Geria son insuperables.
Fíjese bien en que aún no prescindimos del bañador, una ventaja si apetece más baños de mar. Probaremos quesos, obligado, y, en un saltito en ferri a Fuerteventura, sus tan afamadas elaboraciones de leche de cabra majorera. Haremos boca para el pescadito fresco como esa lustrosa vieja a la espalda en Corralejo.
En La Gomera, homenaje con un puchero canario en Las Hayas, el de doña Efigenia –pregunten a Angela Merkel–, mientras que en La Palma apetece el recorrido por Santa Cruz –previo aperitivo en Los Cancajos– empezando por la calle Real. Aquí, no terminar con postre (un príncipe Alberto) será delito NT

Gastronomy that tastes much better in swimwear
Shoreline, beaches, promenades... At the height of August, the Canary Islands offer not only settings associated with sun umbrellas and swimwear – in keeping with the old clichés – but also a range of gastronomy that combines wellbeing with elegant local products to combat the hot weather. Whatever the case, there is (gastronomic) life beyond the typical beach bars and any visitor is guaranteed to be fully satisfied.
In the case of the former, we will do well in Tenerife if we pick legendary eateries in Candelaria or Los Abrigos (to mention but a few) on an island where good food is a calling card. For limpets, we should ringfence El Hierro –La Restinga– and its wonderful wine; also, La Graciosa, in Caleta de Sebo, where they are absolutely exquisite.
Tuna, avocado, tomato and more tomato... In Gran Canaria we will enjoy delicacies from both land and sea in Mogán; fresh fish. The giant sea serpent then carries us to Lanzarote, to Risco de Famara, where nothing rivals the fritters and a La Geria white wine.
Note that we haven’t taken our swimwear off just yet, which is a bonus if you fancy another dip in the sea. We will try the cheeses (a must) and, after a quick ferry crossing to Fuerteventura, its famous products made with milk from the local breed of goat. We will whet our appetite with some fresh fish, such as the colourful parrotfish grilled ‘a la espalda’ style in Corralejo.
In La Gomera, we will treat ourselves to a Canarian puchero stew in Las Hayas, made by Doña Efigenia (just ask Angela Merkel!), while in La Palma – after an aperitif in Los Cancajos – a stroll around Santa Cruz is warranted, beginning on Calle Real. It would be a sin when here not to finish off with a dessert (a Prince Albert chocolate mousse). NT

El macaco de Berbería es uno de los pocos primates que viven fuera de las zonas tropicales del planeta y el único macaco que no habita en el continente asiático.
Lo encontramos principalmente en los bosques de cedros, pinsapos, robles y alcornoques del norte de África. Desde el Rif y el Atlas Medio marroquí hasta las zonas montañosas del norte de Argelia. Si nos lo proponemos, podemos observarlo en el medio natural con cierta facilidad. Suele encontrase formando grupos de hasta medio centenar de ejemplares, en los entornos de Azrou y el Parque Nacional de Ifrane, a unas pocas horas en coche al sur de Fez, y en las cascadas de Ouzud, no muy lejos de Marrakech.
Se sospecha que tras la conquista de la península Ibérica en el siglo VIII, los musulmanes llevaron con ellos macacos como animales de compañía. Tras el paso del tiempo, los pocos descendientes que han sobrevivido se refugian en el peñón de Gibraltar, donde es conocido como «la mona de Gibraltar».
Lamentablemente, se encuentra catalogado por la Unión Internacional de la Naturaleza (IUCN) como en peligro de extinción. NT
The Barbary macaque
The Barbary macaque is one of few primates to live outside the earth’s tropical regions and the only macaque that does not live in continental Asia. It is found mainly in the cedar, fir, oak and cork oak forests of North Africa, from the Rif and Middle Atlas in Morocco to the mountainous regions of northern Algeria.
If we put our minds to it, we can observe these macaques in their natural environment quite easily. They are usually found in groups of up to fifty, in the vicinity of Azrou and the Ifrane National Park (a few hours’ drive south of Fez) and at the Ouzoud waterfalls, which are not far from Marrakesh.
It is thought that the Moors brought macaques with them as pets after they conquered the Iberian Peninsula in the 8th century. Over time, the few surviving descendants have taken refuge on the Rock of Gibraltar, where the macaque is known as “the Gibraltar monkey”.
Unfortunately, the macaque now features on the International Union of Conservation (IUCN) list of endangered species. NT

Obesity is a global health problem but a paradigm shift is transforming its treatment in our female patients. Body fat distribution and metabolic health disorders are now viewed as important factors in a person being overweight.
Innovative medications such as, for many years, GLP1 liraglutide and of late semaglutide have revolutionised the medical treatment of obesity. Combined with diet and exercise, they help achieve appropriate weight loss, improving metabolic health and reducing cardiovascular risks.
These medications are beneficial for conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, as well as for fertility, menstrual disorders and the menopause, and they indirectly reduce the risk of developing a range of cancers.

Esta colaboración convierte a Gran Canaria en un centro neurálgico de innovación de alto nivel en el campo de la urología robótica en todo el mundo. Creada hace menos de un año, la Unidad de Cirugía Robótica de GUA Urología y Andrología y Hospitales Universitarios San Roque ha realizado más de cincuenta cirugías con excelentes resultados.
Canarian doctor Pablo Juárez del Dago was recently appointed head of the new Technology Working Group of the ERUS Robotic Urology Section at the European Association of Urology (EAU). Together with ERUS chairman Dr Alberto Breda, he has commenced an ambitious research project to implement initiatives focused on technological innovation and training for the optimisation of surgical procedures.
A significant advance in this regard is the incorporation of the Apple Vision Pro headset, which will revolutionise functionality in the operating theatre. This has been rendered possible thanks to the support of leading Canarian software development company The Agile Monkeys and in collaboration with San Roque University Hospitals.
The collaboration is helping Gran Canaria become a hub of high-level innovation in the field of robotic urology worldwide. Por lo general, cuando oímos la palabra discusión lo solemos asociar a problemas, pero, si quieres tener una relación sana, las discusiones deben tener su lugar, y aquí te traigo unas claves que te van a resultar muy útiles:
1. No decir nada desde la emoción: si ahora mismo estáis muy enfadados, tensos, tristes o irritados, lo mejor es parar un tiempo estipulado, como media hora, durante la cual cada uno tendrá su lugar y espacio para calmarse y poder retomar desde ahí la conversación.
2. No me preparo solo para contestar: si mi pareja me está diciendo algo que le ha molestado, rebatir eso no me ayudará a solucionar el problema; escuchemos de dónde viene esa petición o crítica para ver si se puede llegar a un punto en común.
3. No hay ganadores: si buscas salirte con la tuya, enhorabuena, al final conseguirás romper la relación; la idea es llegar a un punto común y de forma conjunta. NT

In general, when we hear the word argument we tend to associate it with problems. However, if you want a healthy relationship, arguments need to be given their space so here are some tips you will find useful:
1. Do not say anything out of raw emotion: if both of you very angry, tense, sad or irritated at present, it is best to stop for a specific amount of time, half an hour for example, to allow each person room and space to calm down and be able to pick up the conversation from there.
2. Don’t just prepare to counter argue: if my partner is telling me about something that has annoyed them, merely arguing against that will not help me solve the problem; we should listen to what underlies the request or criticism to see if we can reach some common ground.
3. There are no winners. If your aim is to win, congratulations: you will end up causing the relationship to end; the idea is to reach common ground and do so together. NT

Jairo Núñez (1974, La Orotava) es promotor musical y director de Mar Abierto Producciones. En esta entrevista a NT nos invita a conocer algunos de los eventos culturales que están por venir.
Jairo Núñez (1974, La Orotava) is a music promoter and director of Mar Abierto Producciones. In this interview with NT he tells us about several forthcoming cultural events.
¿Cuánto aporta la industria de los festivales a la economía de Canarias? En cifras generales, todos los festivales generamos unos 800 millones de euros de impacto económico. Dentro de la cultura, que genera anualmente el 3,5 % del producto interior bruto de las Islas, los festivales de música somos los que más riqueza generamos, el 2 %.
Eso es muchísimo dinero y empleos, ¿en qué se traduce? A pesar de eso, aún no contamos con el reconocimiento institucional acorde al peso económico que generamos. Ahora estamos en conversaciones con Industria, que apoya el plátano de manera decidida, pero no a la industria musical, que aporta actualmente 15 000 empleos directos. No, no hay conciencia de su peso en la economía.
Este ha sido un año lleno de grandes momentos musicales, ¿qué prepara de aquí en adelante? Pues, por ejemplo, Pablo López, el 16 y el 17 de agosto en Tenerife y Gran Canaria. Es su gira de décimo aniversario y solo en Canarias actúa en pabellones, en dos grandes escenarios. Ya en septiembre tenemos el Mujeres World Fest, el 21. Con Vanesa Martín, María Peláe, Paula Cendejas, El Kanka y Sara Socas. Los días 18 y 19 de octubre llega el Peñón Rock, en el Palmetum de Santa Cruz, con la gira por el cuarenta aniversario de Hombres G. A ellos se sumarán bandas como Sidonie, Niños Mutantes, Mastodonte, Travis Bird, Los Vinagres… Es el mayor festival de Canarias de indie rock. Septiembre también tendrá una actuación del Festival Mar Abierto, el ciclo anual regional más antiguo de Canarias, con dieciocho años, con Omara Portuondo, a sus noventa y tres años la última gran dama de la canción latina, tras Chavela Vargas, Violeta Parra, Celia Cruz o Mercedes Sosa.
How much does the music festival industry contribute to the economy in the Canaries? Broadly-speaking, the festivals together generate around 800 million euros in economic impact. Within culture, which generates 3.5 % of the Islands' annual gross domestic product, music festivals generate most wealth, 2 %.
That’s a lot of money and jobs. What does it translate to? Despite this, we have still not received institutional recognition that reflects our impact on the economy. We are currently in talks with the Dept of Industry, which supports the banana sector heavily but not the music industry, even though we currently provide 15,000 direct jobs. No, awareness of our importance to the economy is lacking.
This year has been full of big musical events. What do you have in the pipeline? By way of example, Pablo López on 16 and 17 August in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. It is his 10th anniversary tour and he performs in big indoor arenas, two large stages, only in the Canary Islands. In September we have the Mujeres World Fest, which takes place on the 21st and features Vanesa Martín, María Peláe, Paula Cendejas, El Kanka and Sara Socas. On 18 and 19 October, Peñón Rock comes to the Palmetum in Santa Cruz, with Hombres G’s 40th anniversary tour. They will be joined by bands such as Sidonie, Niño Mutantes, Mastodonte, Travis Bird, Los Vinagres... This is the biggest indie rock festival in the Canary Islands. September will also see a concert held as part of the Mar Abierto Festival, the oldest annual region-wide event of its type in the Canaries, with eighteen years under its belt. Más pronto que tarde los invasores castellanos acabarían adentrándose en su menceyato, solo era cuestión de… Un bullicio resonaba entre los barrancos. «Ya están aquí», pensó Beneharo, quien reunió a sus hombres para dirigirse hacia el origen de aquel revuelo. Con la diadema alrededor de su cabeza y su cetro en mano, Beneharo confrontó a aquellos hombres armados que pretendían requisar el ganado. Los castellanos ordenaron al mencey y a su séquito rendirse, mientras les apuntaban con los mosquetes. Beneharo dio un paso al frente como muestra de insumisión.
Los mosquetes no tardaron en cumplir su función. El estruendo retumbó por el barranco. Olía a pólvora. Las armas castellanas habían hecho humacera y para cuando esta se disipó, la realidad golpeó a Beneharo como si de un garrote se tratara, estaba solo. Sangraba por el torso, pero más dolía ver su tierra y su gente sometidas. Un castellano se acercó a prenderlo y el mencey loco, firme y desafiante, lo tumbó de un revés. Los mosquetes estaban casi listos para otra descarga, pero Beneharo estuvo presto; se aproximó al borde del risco, arrojó su cetro y gritó: «¡Achamán!» mientras se precipitaba al vacío. Pues la muerte era la única salida de aquella locura que lo invadía. NT

Beneharo, the mad chieftain
There was a smell of sea salt. The Taganana coast lay before Beneharo, the mencey (chieftain) of Anaga. Sooner or later the Castilian invaders would enter his dominions, it was just a matter of... A commotion sounded in the ravines. “They’re here” thought Beneharo, who gathered his men to proceed towards the source of the noise. With his chieftain’s headband on his head and sceptre in hand, Beneharo confronted the armed men who were trying to steal the herds. Aiming their muskets at them, the Castilians ordered the Mencey and his entourage to surrender. Beneharo stepped forward in a show of insubordination. It didn’t take long for the muskets to do their job. Shots echoed across the ravine and the smell of gunpowder filled the air. The Castilian weapons had given off smoke and, by the time it cleared, reality hit Beneharo like a brick: he was alone. He was bleeding from the chest but it hurt him more to see his land and people subjugated. A Castilian approached to capture him but, firm and defiant, the mad chieftain felled him with a blow using back of his hand. The muskets were about to fire off another volley but Beneharo was quick; he went to the edge of the cliff, threw away his sceptre, and shouted “Achaman!” (the supreme god of Tenerife’s native inhabitants) as he plunged into the void below. ¡Prepárense, amigos! El euro digital está a punto de aterrizar en la zona euro, y no, no viene en un cohete de Elon Musk. El Banco Central Europeo (BCE) quiere darle una vuelta de tuerca a nuestro dinerillo, llevándonos del papel y las monedas al emocionante mundo de las transacciones digitales. ¡Adiós a los billetitos y hola a los pagos instantáneos!
Imagínate, haces clic y, ¡pum!, el dinero llega al otro lado del continente más rápido que tú diciendo «supercalifragilisticoespialidoso». Esto sería una bendición para el comercio electrónico y las compras compulsivas de medianoche. Además, podría abrir las puertas a los servicios financieros para aquellos que hasta ahora pensaban que banca era un deporte extremo.
Pero, como en todo buen chiste, siempre hay una parte de pero. Y el euro digital no es la excepción. A diferencia del efectivo, que puedes esconder bajo el colchón o en un tarro de galletas, este nuevo euro podría ser más rastreable que un chisme en un grupo de WhatsApp familiar. Así que, si pensabas en usarlo para comprar ese regalo sorpresa, piénsatelo dos veces.
Y cuidado, que si todos decidimos guardar nuestros euros digitales en el BCE como si fueran Pokémon raros, los bancos comerciales podrían quedarse más vacíos que una fiesta sin pizza. Y sin bancos prestando dinero, la economía podría terminar haciendo pucheros en un rincón.
Así que, mientras esperamos a que el BCE se decida a lanzar este euro digital, crucemos los dedos para que encuentren el equilibrio perfecto. Queremos disfrutar de pagos rápidos y seguros sin sentirnos observados como en un reality show. ¡Que viva el euro digital (pero con moderación)! NT

Get ready, friends! The digital euro is about to land in the euro zone and, no, it is not arriving on board an Elon Musk rocket. The European Central Bank (ECB) wants to ratchet up things with our money, taking us from paper and coins to the exciting world of digital transactions. Goodbye to banknotes and hello to instant payments!
Just imagine… a click and wham, the money arrives on the other side of the continent faster than you can say “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”. It would be a real bonus for e-commerce and midnight shopping sprees. Moreover, it could open the doors to financial services for those who thought until now that banking was an extreme sport.
However, as with every good joke, there is always a catch and the digital euro is no exception. Unlike cash, which you can hide under your mattress or in a biscuit tin, this new euro could be more traceable than gossip in a family WhatsApp group. Hence, if you were thinking about using it to buy that surprise gift, think twice.
Take care because if we all decide to keep our digital euros in the ECB as if they were rare Pokémons, high-street banks could be emptier than a party with no pizza. And without banks lending money, the economy could end up sulking in the corner.
So, while we wait for the ECB to decide whether to launch this digital euro, let’s keep our fingers crossed that they strike the perfect balance. We want to enjoy fast and secure payments without feeling observed as if we were in a reality show. Long live the digital euro (albeit in moderation)! NT

La CEOE de Tenerife celebró el pasado junio su asamblea anual, en la que mostró su estudio sobre el «Reconocimiento Social de la Empresa y el Empresariado canario 2024», que sirve para comprender la relación entre la ciudadanía y el sector empresarial en Canarias, así como las acciones de responsabilidad social empresarial y la percepción del desarrollo sostenible, entre otras cuestiones.
Durante el encuentro se entregaron distinciones para reconocer a aquellas empresas que han destacado por su impacto positivo en la sociedad en diversos ámbitos. En ese sentido, las empresas galardonadas por su notable contribución social fueron Binter, Caixabank, Cajasiete, Disa, Ecoembes, el ITER y el ITC.
CEOE Tenerife quiso reconocer especialmente al Grupo DinoSol, que por sexto año consecutivo ocupó el primer lugar en el reconocimiento general en áreas como el Desarrollo Científico y Tecnológico, Acciones Sociales, Contribución Económica, Empleo y Conservación del Medioambiente.
Tenerife employers’ association CEOE held its annual meeting in June at which it unveiled its study entitled “Social Recognition of Canarian Businesses and Entrepreneurs 2024”, which offers insight into the relationship between the public and the region’s business sector, as well as corporate social responsibility actions and the perception of sustainable development, among other issues.
The meeting also saw awards presented to businesses that have stood out for their positive impact on society in various fields. The companies recognised for their contribution to society were Binter, Caixabank, Cajasiete, Disa, Ecoembes, the ITER and ITC.
CEOE Tenerife was keen to pay particular tribute to Grupo DinoSol, which for the sixth successive year ranked top in terms of overall recognition in fields such as Scientific and Technological Development, Social Actions, Contribution to the Economy, Employment, and Environmental Conservation.

La iniciativa Comunidades Turísticas Circulares (CTC), planteada como proyecto de economía circular y enmarcada en la Estrategia de Sostenibilidad de la patronal hotelera, ha convertido ya en los dos años que lleva funcionando 1300 toneladas de biorresiduos procedentes de establecimientos hoteleros del sur de Tenerife en unas 450 toneladas de com -
post de alta calidad, aptas para agricultura ecológica y jardinería.
De esta forma, se ha evitado enterrar estos residuos en el complejo ambiental de Arico y se ha evitado la emisión de unas 7000 toneladas de CO2 a la atmósfera, aproximadamente. El proyecto suma ya veinticuatro establecimientos hoteleros participantes, asociados a la patronal hotelera.
In its two years of operation to date, the Circular Tourism Communities (CTC) initiative, a circular economy project that is part of the Sustainability Strategy of Tenerife hoteliers’ association (Ashotel), has already converted 1300 tons of biowaste from south Tenerife hotels into approximately 450 tons of high-quality compost suitable for organic farming and gardening.
As a result, the waste has not required burial at the Arico landfill site and approximately 7000 tons of CO2 have not been given off into the atmosphere. Launched in south Tenerife by Ashotel and Asaga-Asaja Canarias, the project currently boasts twenty-four participating ho

As the new regional president of ASINCA and looking to the future, what are the association’s strategic priorities? ASINCA’s priorities are clear. Given that our industry operates in an outermost region, we defend recognition, at both European Union level and in Spain, of our specificities and in particular our special Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF). This is fundamental for ASINCA. Compensatory measures, such as subsidies for goods transport, place us on a par with operators from Spain and the continent. We are currently seeking ways for Canarian industry to acquire greater weight in the economy of the Islands. We ask that products made in the Canary Islands be afforded a greater presence in public tenders. Until now they have had little presence but in the current scenario products with greater added value such as those made in the Canary Islands could acquire more weight if consideration is given to values such as the lower carbon footprint that comes with local production, logistical efficiency, proximity of service, etc., compared to price - which has traditionally carried greater weight.
On the subject of carbon footprint, how is ASINCA addressing the sustainability challenges ahead of 2030? In its drive to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals, ASINCA is pushing for a change in model in favour of a circular economy. It promotes business sustainability in the industrial sector (to reduce its environmental impact), while also encouraging energy efficiency and the integration of sustainable practices in industrial processes. This includes working with companies, the authorities and organisations to align with the SDGs and 2030 Agenda.

La industria de Canarias elevó un 7,6 % su facturación durante 2023 respecto al ejercicio precedente, un incremento que es el mayor registrado en todo el país y que contrasta con la caída del 1,9 % sufrida por el conjunto de sector en España.

Por comunidades autónomas, Canarias registró la mayor subida en la cifra de negocios industrial en 2023, con una media del 7,6 %, mientras que Asturias registró el descenso más acusado, con una caída del 10,7 %.

Coinciding with the celebrations marking the foundation of the city, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Council has unanimously awarded its Gold Medal to Tirma. Founded in 1941, the company is acknowledged for its far-reaching commitment to the Canary Island market, including its donations to food banks and collaborations in social affairs, sport and culture. During the award ceremony,
the Council Plenary highlighted Tirma’s contribution to the growth and development of the city. In response, Tirma reiterated its commitment to “continue working with enthusiasm and dedication to aid the development and well-being of society” and posted a video on its social media in which it thanked the Council and the city for “the affection shown to us these past 83 years”.

Canarias ha registrado en el primer trimestre del año un aumento de la producción industrial del 2,3 %, crecimiento que coloca a las Islas por encima de la media nacional, que tuvo una caída del 1,5 %, según los datos del Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE).
Este crecimiento tiene su origen, principalmente, en la subida de la producción de bienes de consumo duradero
(14 %), seguida de la de bienes intermedios (5,7 %), energía (4,5 %) y la de bienes de consumo no duradero (1,6 %); y, por el contrario, los bienes de equipo presentan una tasa de variación negativa del -4,9 %.
La estadística de empresas inscritas en la Seguridad Social establece que en marzo existían un total de 2856 empresas inscritas en actividades industriales.
The Canary Islands recorded a 2.3% increase in industrial output during the first quarter of the year, a growth that puts the Islands above the national average, which posted a drop of 1.5% according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The growth was largely due to an increase in the production of durable consumer goods (14%), followed by intermediate
goods (5.7%), energy (4.5%) and non-durable consumer goods. (1.6 %). Conversely, capital goods posted a negative variation rate of -4.9 %.
The statistics concerning businesses registered with Social Security show that in March there were a total of 2856 companies registered under the category of industrial activities.

La moderación de la inflación industrial de mayo fue consecuencia de la evolución de los precios de la energía y los bienes intermedios, que elevaron sus tasas interanuales hasta el -15,1 % y el -3,1 %, respectivamente, por el encarecimiento de la producción.

Binter paid tribute to Spain’s Civil Guard last month by naming one of its ATR 72600 planes after the law enforcement body. The official christening took place at the Binter Technic hangar in Gran Canaria airport and was attended by the airline’s president Rodolfo Núñez and the head of the Civil Guard’s Canary Islands region, brigadier general Juan Hernández Mosquera. They were accompanied by the Spanish government’s most senior representative in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana; the Deputy Minister for Infrastructure of the Canarian government, Francisco Gonzalez; the regional director of Enaire, Javier Delgado; and the director of Gran Canaria airport, Julio Peñalver.
In his remarks, Rodolfo Núñez emphasised that giving the name Guardia Civil to one of the airline’s aircraft is a tribute by the company and its employees to the role and work performed by the force every day not just in the Islands but
throughout Spain. “We should feel proud to have a law enforcement body such as the Civil Guard, which safeguards the well-being of the public on a daily basis and also engages in humanitarian and collaborative work in other countries when it is called upon as a result of the trust, preparation and professionalism of each and every one of its members” he stated.
The Binter president also recalled the key role played by the Civil Guard in the smooth running of Spanish airports and their security.
For his part, General Hernández Mosquera thanked Binter for its tribute to the Civil Guard and stressed the immense pride felt by the force at this generous manifestation of affection, which reinforces the excellent relationship that has always existed between the two. He also highlighted the kind and friendly treatment the company has always afforded to all civil guards.

Atlantis Cargo, empresa del sistema Binter especializada en la gestión de carga en las bodegas de Binter, ha cerrado un acuerdo con BGlobal para que se convierta en su agente general de ventas (GSA) en Madrid.
La firma del acuerdo se produjo en la sede de la aerolínea en Gran Canaria por parte del coordinador general de Binter, Santiago Guerra; el gerente de Negocio de Atlantis Cargo,
José Luis Becerra; el CEO de BGlobal, Rodrigo Cubillo; y su responsable de Operaciones, Rubén García Escobar.
Uno de los puntos fuertes de esta alianza se basa en su potencial para facilitar los tránsitos ágiles de mercancías, de manera que a un envío con destino final en cualquiera de las Islas se le aplica el mismo flete que al que va directo de Madrid a Gran Canaria o Tenerife.
Airline Binter has further stepped up its commitment to bringing the ‘Canarian way’ of flying to Madrid by adding a significant improvement to its already attractive Flexiplus fare. As of now, passengers who purchase the fare to fly between the Canary Islands and Madrid will enjoy even greater flexibility as they will be able to change their flight to the time that suits them best.
Customers with a Flexiplus fare will be able to catch an earlier or later flight to travel the same day without having to pay a fee or any fare
difference, if the journey is the same. As an additional advantage, passengers will not need to go in person to the airport to make the change, which can be requested using the airline's mobile app and website or by phone, as is the case for routes within the Canary Islands.
Neither will they have to wait until the actual day of travel to make the change as the airline now offers the option of doing this in advance.
Atlantis Cargo, the Binter system company which specialises in managing hold cargo for the airline, has signed an agreement with BGlobal to become its general sales agent (GSA) in Madrid.
The agreement was signed at the airline’s Gran Canaria headquarters by Binter general coordinator Santiago Guerra; the Business Ma-nager of Atlantis Cargo, José Luis Becerra; BGlobal CEO Rod-
rigo Cubillo, and its head of Operations, Rubén García Escobar. A strong point of this alliance is its potential to facilitate agile goods transit, with the same freight charge applied to a shipment with a final destination in any of the Islands as to one going directly from Madrid to Gran Canaria or Tenerife.

¿Cuáles son los productos imprescindibles del Archipiélago que estarán presentes? What are the aims of Binter’s new menus?
Our aim is to offer quality menus that reflect the richness of Canarian gastronomy, using local products. Passengers will be able to enjoy the taste of the Canary Islands at 18000 feet above sea level.
We have factored in Binter’s environmental values by reducing the use of plastics as much as possible and replacing these with more sustainable materials such as wooden cutlery, bowls made of sugar cane and compostable packaging to facilitate waste management.
Which indispensable products from the Islands will feature in the menus? We have designed our recipes with products that are part and parcel of the daily Canarian diet, using ingredients and dishes such as banana, sweet potato, gofio, mojo sauces and escaldón. Although we have to serve these cold, we still manage to retain their authenticity and flavour. Needless to say, there will always be a place for the islands’ exceptional cheeses, such as Fuerteventura’s multi award-winning Tofio Maxorata.
Are the menus varied? We offer a variety of gourmet snacks which are rotated monthly on outbound and return flights to give passengers a more enriching gastronomic experience on board. We have also surprises in store for the children in the form of four variants of our BinterPeque kids’ menu.
What message would you send to future Binter passengers regarding the culinary experience they are about to enjoy? It is a unique gastronomy reflecting the essence of the Canaries and they will be able to enjoy the islands’ culinary diversity as soon as they step on board.
