DIET BY CAPT. JENNIFER CARPENTER

is a state of mind

SUSTAINMENT BRIGADE MULESKINNER HOLISTIC HEALTH AND FITNESS (H2F)

When you think of the word ‘diet,’ what do you think of? Do you think about the latest fad diet on social media that will help you lose “those last ten pounds,” or the goal pants in the back of the closet that will fit “one day,” or even the stress that comes before every swimsuit season, wedding, major life event, etc.? For many, diet is a “four letter word.” But why does one word give so many people a sense of anxiety and dread? Moreover, why do we give that one word so much power? Merriam Webster defines diet as, “food and drink regularly provided or consumed,” but ironically, most people associate diet with nutrition that is sparingly consumed in order to lose weight. As a culture, we have developed a “diet mindset” where we are constantly on a diet or in between diets. As a result, every time we try to diet, it becomes harder and harder each time. Let me ask you a question. If diets worked the first time, why do we always need to be on a diet? In general, the best “diet” is something sustainable that you can easily do for the rest of your life. So, if you love rice but you are on a “no rice diet,” do

page 6

blissNOW

OCT | NOV | DEC

you think you will be able to maintain that forever? Chances are, probably not. When people make foods off limits, they get an overwhelming urge to eat that food. So, when I decide that I deserve a cheat day, I am going to eat all of the rice that I can as well as any other foods I have labeled as off limits. After all, I will start my diet again tomorrow … But then “cheat day” becomes “cheat week” which becomes “cheat month.” At what point, would it have been easier to never have been on a diet? Diets are not sustainable. They may work momentarily but they rarely last. This is why health professionals constantly promote lifestyle changes. It’s the little things like switching the daily soda for water or changing the large coffee with all of the bells and whistles to a smaller version or walking an extra couple of miles a few times per week. You don’t have to change everything that you do in order to improve upon yourself. Just try to make a couple of changes that you will stick with, and then make a couple more in a few weeks after you’ve been consistent. Remember, life’s a marathon, not a sprint and we are what we repeatedly do.

holiday tips

Hello friends, Milo here, your favorite Family and MWR mascot! Holidays are here again, and everyone is ready for the cool temperatures. I keep hearing that Pumpkin Spice Lattes are the start of the season. I’m not exactly sure why, but when I hear pumpkin I think of Jack-O-Lanterns or pumpkin pies, yum! The holidays are a time of fun, giving, magic and lots of scrumptious food! I can chow down on turkey, ham and whip cream! I lick the bowl clean when they serve me some of that white fluffy goodness. However, there are some foods, I’m not allowed to eat or that my family should watch out for. I can be a little sneaky when it comes to getting that delicious holiday food. I got caught once with my body half way through the garbage bag, when they pulled me out, I had a piece of ham hanging over my snout. I can’t help myself, but when I smell the yummy food, I go for it! But we all have to be safe, right? Here are a couple of things to keep in mind this holiday season when it comes to having holiday gatherings with loved ones. First of all, keep the garbage bag closed! Or better yet keep it away from us because we will find a way to get to the food. When you are baking treats for us, remember chocolate is a big no no and also anything with a certain type of sweetener, it has a name I can’t pronounce … xylitol. That’s not good for our sensitive tummy. Leftover foods can be tricky to share with us. If they are spicy, have garlic or any seasoning maybe keep it for yourself, you never know what we are allergic to or what may make us sick. There’s a lot to be celebrating for this coming season. Remember to be safe with each other, have fun with your loved ones and be merry!

Paws and Kisses,

meet bowser BY MICHELE WIERNICKI FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

Meet our cool friend and the newest member of Milo’s Pack, Bowser! Bowser is a Sulcata Tortoise, also known as an African Spur Tortoise. He is eight years old, very friendly and — contrary to popular belief — very speedy! While we visited Bowser and his dual military parents, he quickly made his way around the fenced in backyard on his very own tortoise-made trail. Tiny, little Bowser was born in Hawaii and quickly grew to his current 60-pound frame. His diet includes squash, kale, collard greens, cactus and his favorite: red bell peppers. Not green though, he will not touch green bell peppers. In the fall, he also loves pumpkin and when he’s really good he gets a sweet treat of watermelon and strawberries. He is fed just once a day, but he’s surrounded by food in his backyard habitat. “He mostly eats the lawn,” said his mom. According to his owners he will gain approximately 100-150 additional pounds during his lifetime which, in captivity, is estimated to be around 80 years! As a military brat, Bowser has lived in four homes during his eight years and he’s about to head back to his Hawaii homeland this fall. Bowser’s not an only child though! He has a doggy brother named Teddy and a human sister named Priya. Teddy and Bowser are best friends and they often play outside together and share their food. Milo is so happy to add Bowser to his pet pack! Do you have a unique pet that wants to join Milo’s pack? Let us know and we may feature your friend in the winter issue of Bliss NOW. Email us at blissmwr@gmail.com and include the subject line: Milo’s Pack.

BY EDDIE ARRIOLA

FAMILY & MWR SPECIAL EVENTS

I started this journey of food, hoping to become a better cook and learn to at least cook without burning the house down. The greatest lesson I’ve learned from this quarterly article is that you must step out of your comfort zone to grow as an individual. With that in mind, I decided to take a break from cooking and try something new. For those of you who know me, you know that I can eat just about anything! Except, brussel sprouts … those are my Kryptonite, but I hope to change that one day. I’ve decided to put the, “I will eat anything,” theory to the test. I’m sure a lot of Soldiers and Families have probably tried exotic meals while stationed overseas or throughout the country. As for me, I’ve lived in El Paso my whole life and you get comfortable with eating your favorite foods. I took a leap and decided to take on Rod and Gun Club’s alligator and elk sausages. They come on a hoagie bun with fries and a drink. These items are only offered for a limited time in August so I jumped in and gave it a go! I started with the alligator, because quite frankly it terrified me. The thought of eating a gator never crossed my mind. What if I’m

page 10

blissNOW

OCT | NOV | DEC

allergic? Just thinking about it made me hesitant. It also didn’t help that everyone I told, ahead of my alligator lunch, grimaced at the idea. But I threw caution to the wind and took my first bite. My mouth filled with an explosion of staggering taste I have nothing to compare. If I had to guess it was like mixing chicken and tuna in a bowl. I assume that’s what it means when people say, “it tastes like chicken.” It wasn’t slimy at all; the texture was similar to that of chorizo – a spicy Spanish pork sausage. I probably won’t make a habit of eating gator but I will proudly say that I ate the whole thing. The elk was a different story. I expected a tough texture and a taste similar to venison, but it was better than I could imagine. My taste buds were treated to a sweet flavor that I wasn’t expecting. I was told it was mixed with apples, probably the culprit of the sweet taste. I would recommend trying this if you ever get the chance. I wish I could give you a breakdown of flavor for each meat, however, I’m not a food connoisseur. All I can tell you is to never let the fear of not liking something stop you from trying it. Yes, I wasn’t a fan of the gator … but I never would’ve known if I didn’t try. I would like to thank the staff at the Rod and Gun Club for giving me the opportunity to try these creative concoctions and letting me step out of my comfort zone. Though this may have been a limited time offer for August, there’s always a chance you’ll see it again. I’m sure, if there is interest, they could bring it back. www.bliss.armymwr.com

So, if it’s something you’re interested in, reach out and ask. But if alligator and elk are not for you, there many other delicious items on their menu. I recommend the grilled cheese! If you’re looking for a new spot for breakfast or lunch, head on over to the Rod and Gun Club, located at 3730 Roy Johnson Lane. Tell them Ed sent you. I’m enjoying this journey and I’m thankful that I get to share it with you all. I look forward to new opportunities to learn and try new adventures. This article gives me an outlet to do so. If I didn’t step out of my comfort zone, I wouldn’t be writing this article and growing as an individual. So, if I have any advice to leave with you, it’s to always try everything at least once, you’ll be amazed at what hidden treasures you will find! But that’s just Food for Thought!

Hauntings have returned! BY MICHELE WIERNICKI

FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

The Massacre on Marshall Road is back with a new location, a new name and a vengeance for 2021. After a sad year without screams, tears and fears, MWR’s famous haunted house has returned. With a new location comes a new name, too! The Massacre was previously located at the Trading Post for the last 9 years. This year, it has permanently relocated to 2457 Carrington Road and the Special Events team has created an entire building full of scares. The Massacre is still a bargain at just $5 per person. This is much cheaper than off-post options, but don’t let the cost fool you! This haunted house is not for the faint of heart. There is no age limit for this attraction; however, we do warn parents to think carefully before bringing little ones inside. Those interested in experiencing the terror of a lifetime can purchase tickets ahead of time on eventbrite.com or pay at the door. Patrons not possessing a DoD ID card to enter Fort Bliss must buy online tickets and go to the Visitor Control Center for a pass. The online ticket will serve as your sponsor allowing you to get a pass. Keep in

@blissmwr

mind that you can ask for a 30-day pass which will allow you to come back for more Halloween fun throughout the month. Whether you buy online tickets or pay at the door, please remember that the line is still on a first-come, first-served basis. The Massacre Haunted House will be open every Friday and Saturday night in October from 6 to 10 p.m. It will also be open Halloween night from 6 p.m. to midnight. Payment can be made in cash or card, except for American Express (AMEX). For more information, call 915-5888247. Ranked #10 in the USA Today’s Scariest Haunted Houses in 2018, the Massacre will not disappoint. Check out some of the reviews: “Fantastic fun & great scares! 5 stars!” “Had a great scary time there! Kids loved it, I loved it and it’s by far the best deal in El Paso!” “Amazing!!! Best haunted house and only for $5! Can’t beat it!”

ENJOY A NIGHT OUT BY MICHELE WIERNICKI

FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

National Night Out (NNO) is an annual event held across the United States. In Texas, it’s celebrated on the first Tuesday of October to capitalize on the cooler weather. NNO is designed to get families outside, having fun together as a community while building the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement. According to the NNO webpage, natw.org., the best way to build a safer community is to know your neighbors and your surroundings. National Night Out triumphs over a culture that isolate from each other and allows them to rediscover their own communities. Fort Bliss Family Homes has teamed up with MWR to celebrate this great community event Tuesday, Oct. 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Freedom Crossing promenade. There will be a DJ, inflatables, food for purchase, McGruff the Crime Dog and more. Come out, learn a little and enjoy a fun evening!

FAMILY & MWR OLD FORT BLISS REPLICA

Old Fort Bliss Replica has been dusted off and spruced up this past spring. Explore some of the upcoming programming for the remainder of the year! Harvest Festival It can be hard to get into the spirit of the season when the weather is so warm, but that’s why you don’t want to miss the Fall Harvest Festival. Traditionally, this event has been paired with Monster Bash. This year, Old Fort Bliss Replica is turning over a new leaf by leaving the spooky spectacles up to the wonderful MWR Special Events team. This season will kick off with a pumpkin patch, Friday, Oct. 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. There will be family fun with face painting, fall themed crafts, yard games, food trucks and local vendors. Our Heroes Tree Our Heroes Tree was an initiative that started in 2005 at West Point to commemorate the service of all branches and its military members

throughout history. It is a way to connect with your heritage of military service within your family and community. This year, Old Fort Bliss Replica will be celebrating with a redecorating and lighting of Our Heroes Trees. The classroom space will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Nov. 6, 13 and 20 to make ornaments. Craft supplies will be provided to make your hero tree ornament commemorating a past or present service member of your choice. Then you may hang your ornament on one of the Heroes Trees. There will be an official tree lighting with book reading, Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. Old Fort Bliss Replica Market Old Fort Bliss Replica is on a mission to support homebased businesses owned and operated by service members, dependents and retirees. December will mark the first quarterly market with a holiday theme to match the season. The market will operate Saturday, Dec. 4 from 1 to 5 p.m. The first market will have 30 outdoor spaces (10x10) available for rent. All products must be handcrafted goods produced by the owner. Resale items are prohibited. If you are interested in renting a spot at the Market, scan the QR

code to submit an application or apply in person at the Old Fort Bliss Replica during museum operating hours. Host your own event Did you know that the Old Fort Bliss Replica is available for rent? This year, there has been some serious spring cleaning and revitalization of the catering space. While indoor capacity for the space is only 40 people, it opens to the outdoor pavilions which can seat up to 100 at this time. It is also one of the only MWR facilities that allows outsourced catering. Fall evenings under the pavilions offers beautiful views of the sunset over the mountains which might be the perfect setting for your next event. Stop by and take a peek for yourself, and while you are at it take a stroll through the museum. Volunteers Wanted The combination of closure due to Covid-19 and a new manager means that the volunteer corps, which is the foundation of the Replica, has to be rebuilt. Old Fort Bliss Replica is searching for volunteers for everything from gardening, cleaning, costume repair, reenactments, to those with specialized skills relevant to life in the 1850s. Learning new ways to be healthy BY LEXLY BLEDSOE FAMILY & MWR YOUTH SPORTS

The Fort Bliss Youth Sports and Fitness program is a place where kids can explore their strengths and improve their weaknesses in a positive, safe, and nurturing environment. The Youth Sports Program offers an extensive variety of sports, clinics, camps, events, and fitness classes to engage kids and teach them that maintaining their health through physical activity can be fun. Since reopening in April, the program has started to include a holistic health approach to help youth bounce back from the Covid-19 shutdown, discover their ambitions, and meet their goals. One youth in particular, Demerius Rondon, came in with a big fitness goal and the fortitude to do whatever he needed to do to reach it. What he did not realize at the time was that fitness goals take so much more than showing up to the gym every day; he learned that he also needed to adjust how he ate and how he cared for his body. However, the biggest obstacle he faced was his mental and emotional perspective. Working with Demerius for just two months, the staff began to notice his fitness goal taking shape, his confidence increasing, and

page 28

his demeanor shifting to a more joyful one. During the summer, he volunteered within the program mentoring other kids in the fitness classes and camps where he furthered his journey, by learning to create opportunities for those with mental or physical obstacles. When he is not here, the kids are noticeably disappointed. Demerius is not the only youth who has benefited from the new health-integrated approach. The camp participants in both fitness and volleyball had the opportunity to learn about health topics spanning nutrition for athletes, stress management, recovery, mobility training, and even yoga! They were individually challenged to create and meet their health and fitness goals using this holistic approach. Do you have youth in your family who are interested in becoming more active? Explore what the Fort Bliss Youth Sports and Fitness program has to offer! Stay in the know by following their Facebook page, search Ft. Bliss CYS Youth Sports & Fitness. Unlimited possibilities with SKIES BY DORI NIX

FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

The sky is the limit with Child & Youth Services’ (CYS) ever-popular SKIESUnlimited program. Incorporating Schools of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration, and Skills, the SKIESUnlimited program creates unlimited possibilities for Army youth. While classes range from gymnastics and musical arts to dance and swimming, the program also offers an assortment of unique classes such as fencing. Fencing is the recreational sport of swordplay enjoyed by people of all ages. Serving as both a physical and mental workout, fencers often learn to hone their strategies against opponents and build up physical endurance, agility and accuracy. At first, the art of fencing can seem complex, but CYS SKIESUnlimited sets students up for success in their fencing endeavors. The SKIESUnlimited fencing program started in January of 2013 and has blossomed into a highly desired program among youth that fills up quickly. Encompassing a tradition of perseverance, the fencing program offers a unique exposure to the Olympic sport at a higher level. Several SKIES fencing students have competed at local, regional, and national levels. Some SKIES fencers have continued with the sport at the college level and even received a fencing scholarship for their higher education. No need to fear intimidation when starting the fencing class. Regardless of age, the fencing program is designed for beginning fencers without prior knowledge of the sport. This one-hour class, scheduled Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., consists of a warm-up activity, coordination footwork drills, and specific fencing drills. “The wonderful coaches work with the fencing @blissmwr

students in a fun learning environment, give them a lot of background information and teach them the necessary skills,” says Joy Clickener, SKIESUnlimited director. Each class concludes with strategic match situations with peers. Students learn about all of the equipment used in the sport and get firsthand experience using a weapon (fencing foil), a fencing mask, gloves and jacket. Ready to jump on board but not ready to invest in all the equipment? SKIESUnlimited offers equipment rentals for all ages needed for the class. This program is open to ages 6 and older, and costs $60 per month. Additional costs may accrue with equipment rentals. Fencing classes run on a monthly basis, and students must pay and re-register for each month they wish to participate. Registration for SKIESUnlimited classes starts on the 20th of the month prior to class. Registration ends on the 7th of the month the student plans to attend. Refunds are not available after the 7th of the month. All students must be registered with CYS Parent Central before enrolling in the SKIES fencing program. To register for CYS, call 915-568-4374. Parents! Are you interested in learning to fence too? Fencing is the perfect sport for all ages whether you’re in it for fun, fitness or even to train to compete! Y•I•VOLUN BY TEPHANIE HOPPER

FAMILY & MWR ARMY VOLUNTEER CORPS

NAME: EMILY WILLIAMS Volunteer Opportunity: 1-1 CAV Senior Advisor & President of the Catholic Women of the Chapel What was your first volunteer opportunity? “My first volunteer opportunity was with the Girl Scouts. I made it through to receive the gold award in girl scouting, which got me started on the idea of service. We would participate in service projects as part of obtaining our badges. While volunteering with Girl Scouts, I made sandwiches for soup kitchens and cleared trails. All through high school and college and into graduate school, I volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. I helped build four houses; one even in Guatemala. Habitat for Humanity is an organization that meant a lot to me! It was incredible to feel like you were helping someone to see the direct connection to the work you did and how it helped somebody else.” What will you tell someone who is on the fence about serving in the community of volunteering? “The short answer is, you will never regret helping. Last year, during the pandemic, I was teaching my kids full-time, so I was not volunteering much. This year I have a chance to give back, and kids are going to school. I decided to take a little bit of risk and become the President of the Catholic Women of the Chapel. It has a good mission. I am a little nervous, but I believe in their purpose and work, and I want it to succeed. My advice to other people would be, you will never regret helping.” Her “Y • I • VOLUNTEER!” “You know I have been blessed in my life, and I can sit here and be happy in my little space. On the other hand, I could share my time, share my talents and help our community; I think that is important. So volunteering is a way that I can feel useful and help others. I can maybe have an impact on somebody else and help him or her.” page 38

NAME: CPT XAVIER WASHINGTON Volunteer Opportunity: El Paso Children’s Hospital What was your first volunteer opportunity? “My first volunteer opportunity was Operation Hope, an organization that assists with funeral payments. Operation Hope requested Deadpool, a superhero character that I dressed up as, to go to a child’s funeral. It was a little uncomfortable at first, because I do not just show up to a funeral dressed in a Deadpool costume – but I wanted to fulfill that request. At the funeral, they were passing out Easter baskets, and I was high-fiving the kids. Kids were in wheelchairs, you name it, and the news showed up out there. It was one of the best experiences that I have ever had. It was also one of the most humbling experiences, because I realized that it was a celebration of life even though it was a death.” What impact has volunteering had on you? “Volunteering has shown me that it is bigger than I am. Volunteering as Deadpool helping kids with cancer has changed my life; it has made me a better person. It has helped me be more empathetic and sympathetic to people I encounter, because people have different situations they are dealing with, so volunteering helps me be a better me.” His “Y • I • VOLUNTEER!” “I was raised by a family that gives back, and it has been instilled in me. It is more of who I am as a person. It's also a tradition imparted to me by my alma mater, Bethune-Cookman University, which uses the acronym Forget About Me, I Love You to encourage others to give back. I also use this acronym as my command philosophy to encourage and remind Soldiers we are a FAMILY and to encourage them to give back. It is what family is about, always trying to help somebody. I want to be remembered as someone who made an impact by giving back by Forgetting About Me; I Love You — FAMILY” www.bliss.armymwr.com

NTEER NAME: BETHANY HAMM Volunteer Opportunity: 1-77 SFRG Advisor What was your first volunteer opportunity? “My first volunteer opportunity was at Fort Polk as a Treasurer of the Soldier Family Readiness Group (SFRG). It was a lot of fun, but it was somewhat challenging because the SFRG was nonexistent, which is why another spouse and I volunteered our time to try to build it up. We wanted to bring the Families together and have something to engage in while our spouses were away at JRTC. It was enjoyable getting to know everybody and learning the ropes of it all.” How has volunteering made a difference in your life? “Through volunteering, I had the opportunity to share wonderful experiences with some fantastic people, and it taught me a lot about what it takes to run things on the Army side.” Her “Y • I • VOLUNTEER!” “My husband is the company commander this time around, and I was excited to work beside him as the SFRG Leader. We have experienced SFRGs in other units and other duty stations, but we get to make it our own this time. We can do our favorite things, but most importantly, we get to help Families, and that is what we enjoy the most!” NAME: CPL JOO Y. CHOI Volunteer Opportunity: Fort Bliss Armed Services YMCA What was your first volunteer opportunity? “My first volunteer opportunity was at the Fort Bliss Armed Forces YMCA. #YIVOLUNTEER CAMPAIGN SHARE YOUR Y! 1-31 OCTOBER

THREE WAYS YOU CAN PARTICIPATE:

1. Share a video or story on social media talking about why you volunteer. Please use the tag #YIVOLUNTEER in your post and tag @FBArmyVolunteerCorps 2. Submit your video to fortblissvolunteer@yahoo.com (under 30 sec). Your story will be featured on the Fort Bliss Army Volunteer Corps social media platforms. Please use the words “YIVOLUNTEER” in your response if you can. 3. Submit a written testimonial and/or a jpeg photo to fortblissvolunteer@ yahoo.com briefly stating why you volunteer. We will similarly use your story on social media or other communications. Please use the words “YIVOLUNTEER …” in your response if possible. QUESTIONS TO HELP TELL YOUR STORY: Why I Volunteer? Sample answers: “My why is to give back to the Fort Bliss Community to make a difference in a Soldier’s Life.” “I volunteer to give back and for job experience. That’s my why.” “My why is helping our youth!” What are three words to describe your volunteer opportunity? If you could say one thing to your fellow volunteers about why they should get involve? FILMING TIPS: • Try to keep your video under 30 sec. • Begin by introducing yourself (name, where you volunteer, and what you do as volunteer) • If you are filming yourself with your phone, make sure you are holding it in landscape mode (horizontal). • Film yourself in a well-lit room or outside during the day in a quiet spot.

Community. Yes, I enjoy giving back through the Armed Services YMCA because you know you can see when some of the people come in you can tell, they’re not in a good place, and once they leave, you can see the smile of relief on their face. I am glad a program like this exists to give out food in El Paso and to Soldiers. It is a gratifying opportunity to give back, but it is also challenging, especially right now because it’s scorching outside.” What is your bucket list volunteer opportunity? “If there were a humanitarian mission, I would do it. I am passionate about the medical side of serving others. However, if I could do those things, like Haiti, I could go there right now to help as a military person, a civilian or any status. I would be there because that has a purpose, and purpose is what drives me.” His “Y • I • VOLUNTEER!” “Honestly, it is twofold. I mean, so I am not going to say that I am, you know, purely altruistic. Even though I said, I believe in the purpose of the mission. I volunteer because, ultimately, it helps the community and me. The second reason is that I need volunteer hours; it is one of those catch 22 things, but I continue to volunteer because I see what it is doing to SCAN HERE TO VIEW VIDEO help our community.”

RAISE AWARENESS BY JEANNINE KOUASSI BAMBA

FAMILY & MWR DOMESTIC ABUSE VICTIM ADVOCATES

Domestic violence affects everyone regardless of one’s cultural identity. It is a taught behavior that is not justified by conventional justification like drug abuse, rage, or psychological illness. Similar to the civilian community, domestic violence is a problem in military Families. Statistics show the Department of Defense (DoD) office received 16,912 cases of spouse and intimate partner abuse and 15 fatalities in the financial year 2018. This is translating to about 7% of the military population. Furthermore, the report indicated that younger service members and their families are at higher risk of becoming victims and offenders of domestic violence in the military community. During the Covid-19 pandemic, there were more domestic violence cases among the military community compared to the previous years. According to Army Family Advocacy Program statistics, there were 3,260 domestic abuse cases between October 2019 to May 2020. This report coincides with the civilian community, which indicated a rise in domestic violence during the pandemic. Considering this, the Domestic Abuse Victim Advocates (DAVA) are determined to raise awareness about domestic violence with monthly events or activities on the installation to promote safety and healthy relationships. To raise awareness about domestic violence, the Family Advocacy Program (FAP) has events, classes and activities scheduled that promote safe and healthy relationships. Classes that will be available include Community Awareness, Command & Troop Education Programs, New Parent Support, Marriage Enrichment & Life Skills Education and Victim Advocacy Services.

@blissmwr

In October, there will be an Education Day, Thanks for Asking exercise, and FAP will also collect personal hygiene donations for the Center against Family Violence Shelter to help those who are victims of Domestic and Family Violence. Other scheduled events can be found on bliss. armymwr.com or visit FAP, located at 2494 Ricker Road. The DAVA’s mission is to prevent, promote, advocate and help service members and their families navigate the system within the installation and in the community. DAVAs provide crisis intervention, safety planning and advocacy services to victims of domestic violence. Advocates educate victims on what constitutes abuse, what their rights are, and services available for their needs. At the request of the victim, DAVAs will accompany victims to court proceedings, hearings, court martials, meetings with lawyers, law enforcement and commanders. DAVAs also educate personnel on the installation regarding the most effective response to domestic violence on behalf of victims and at risk family members. Family Advocacy Program/Domestic abuse victim advocate services are voluntary and are available to service members and family members eligible for care in a military treatment facility. This includes intimate partners who share a child in common with a service member, live with or previously lived with a service member.
