New outlook a way to beat bullying Ruan Bruwer

DIFFERENT methods have been used in order to manage bully behaviour in schools. The more common approach is the one of punishment. “There are, however, other methods of dealing with it,” said Roelf Reyneke at a teacher’s breakfast last week. Reyneke is a lecturer at the University of the Free State (UFS) who has also been working at schools for years. He spoke about school violence, bully behaviour and restorative practices as an alternative to punitive school discipline. “Bully behaviour of learners should be constructively mana ged to ensure that schools are safe havens for teachers and children alike,” said Reyneke. “Restorative practices in schools are not something that happens overnight. It takes time,

training and patience. When you help bullies to understand the consequences of their behaviour and help them to heal their own pain, you are not just helping the bully, but also their victims. “We need to help all the roleplayers when it comes to the education of children to be more emotional and socially intelligent in order to ensure that the brain is primed for learning and not for fight, flight or freeze.” Bullying has been identified as one of the risk factors that are associated with antisocial and criminal behaviour. The victims also experience higher levels of stress, anxiety, depression and general illness than other children. School violence is escalating, with one in every five South African learners being a victim of violence, including assault, robbery and cyber bullying.
