Kovsies proud of their Rolene THE University of the Free State (UFS) is delighted with the naming of Rolene Strauss, a fourthyear medical student, as Miss World 2014. Rolene was crowned as Miss World 2014 in London, England, on Sunday evening. The last time a South African was crowned Miss World was in 1974 when Anneline Kriel walked away with the title. Before her, Penny Coelen was crowned Miss World in 1958. “Rolene represents the best of South Africa – a deep commitment to education and a profound compassion for human beings. “Since the first day I met her as a new firstyear medical student, I was aware of somebody special, a young woman from a rural area who carried herself with so much grace and confidence. “She is truly without prejudice towards any human being and this has made her one of my allies in building the Human Project of the University of the Free State,” says Prof. Jonathan Jansen, vicechancellor and rector of the UFS. “I was not at all surprised that she chose as her beautywithapurpose project the task of keeping young girls in school; this is who she is, and if you observe her

dedication to her medical studies, you see someone for whom studies and service are not the addon obligations of the Miss World pageant; it is who she is in real life,” he says. “Rolene has proven herself to be a dedicated, hardwor king and enthusiastic young woman. These are qualities which will make her an equally exceptional Miss World,” says Prof. Gert van Zyl, dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences. According to Van Zyl, Rolene interrupted her medical studies when she competed in the Miss South Africa pageant. “We are extremely proud of Rolene and will definitely welcome her back after her year as Miss World. She is an inspiration to us all,” he says. According to Mosa Leteane, president of the UFS Student Representative Council (SRC), the entire student community is elated about Rolene’s crowning. “We know that she will continue to do great on her new journey. Her passion for people and kind spirit are some of the many beautiful traits that continue to make her an exemplary fellow Kovsie. We would like to congratulate her and wish her all the best. She has really made us extremely proud,” says Leteane.

Spend wisely during the festive season WITH the end of the year approa ching and the festive season gradually creeping up, the National Credit Regulator (NCR) is urging consumers to be vigilant when entering into credit agreements, says Mpho Ramapala, acting manager in the Education and Communication Department at the NCR. Credit providers should disclose all costs in advertisements if they make reference to monthly instal ments, repayment amount or any other cost of credit. “Consumers should be wary of misleading terms in advertisements or direct solicitation for credit such as ‘no credit checks required’, ‘blacklisted consumers welcome’, ‘free credit’, ‘cheap credit’, ‘afforda ble credit’, ‘low cost credit’ or any wording that has substantially the same meaning.” Ramapala also advises consumers not to leave their identity docu ments, bank cards/pins and Sassa cards with credit providers when applying for credit. “This is a criminal offence”. Consumers should report cases where their bank/Sassa cards and identity documents are taken by credit providers to their local police stations. Due to the yearend celebrations

and excitement, the festive time provides the perfect opportunity to spend money that you do not have. “If you want to begin the new year in a financially sound position, be aware of how you spend your money during this period and save for the new year”, advised Ramapa la. Over the festive period, consu mers should be especially wary of “buy now, pay after three months deals” and then incurring additional credit during those three months. “Consumers should request a preagreement statement and quotation when applying for credit. This will enable them to shop around and do a comparison.” The NCR urges consumers to seek loans with NCRregistered credit providers. They can identify such credit providers by a window decal (an orange sticker with an NCR logo) and a registration certificate that will also state the NCR credit provider registration number. To ensure that you are not put in a predicament of having to apply for credit come the new year, spend wisely this year by following these simple steps: S Do a budget for the festive season and include all debt, rent, electricity, water, insurance, trans port, gifts, entertainment, etc.

Due to the year-end celebrations and excitement, the festive season provides the perfect opportunity to spend money that you do not have. S When going shopping, have a shopping list to avoid buying unnecessary items. S If you didn’t budget for a holiday earlier in the year, it might be too late and risky in terms of finances to go on holiday this year. S Be proactive and doubleup on your regular payments such as mortgage or rent, lights and water. That way you will be able to afford costs such as school fees and

uniforms which will hit you at the start of the new year. S Prioritise your home loan and rent. S Shop around for cheaper options. S If you borrow money, make sure you borrow only for what is strictly necessary, and ensure that you can afford the repayments. S If you’re not sure of exactly how much you want to spend on each person’s gift, it’s easy to get caught

up in the moment and overspend. Limit yourself to an amount for each person to help keep track of your spending. S Items such as school stationery, uniforms or other useful items are a better investment. Choose presents that last long after Christmas. S Instead of buying expensive presents, set up a savings fund and put away an amount for your loved ones each Christmas. Over time this will grow into a much bigger pot of money that can be used to fund school fees or pay off a car. S Entertain at home. Ask guests to bring something for the meal so you share the costs of your festive entertainment. S Each year, set up a separate fund for birthday and Christmas presents as well as holidays. Keeping this money separate will enable you to save for special occasions, while at the same time fund your daytoday living expenses without going into debt. S Use your bonus to reduce your debt burden by paying off existing loans. By spending wisely this year, you can reap the benefits next year. S Keep track of your spending by either jotting down or keeping the receipts of all your spending.

Banking tips for holiday tourists ONCE a year, December gives us a license to wind down and step back from our daytoday responsibilities. Unfortunately, financial obligations and needs never go on holiday, but digital banking has made staying on top of your finances simple, no matter where you find yourself. “There is no reason why a financial issue either at home or on holiday should cause alarm as there is very little that you will be unable to do from your phone via the FNB Banking App, or cellphone banking,” says Sahil Mungar from FNB Digital Banking. December 2013 statistics show a 20% increase in spending on FNB’s Banking App. Most popular transac tions during this month were payments, transfers, prepaid purchases, sending money and Lotto purchases which is testament to the fact that customers that are on holiday and out of the home or office choose to bank on their phones. “Doing your banking on an app adds value to your life by saving time and unnecessary fees. We expect to see an even greater monthonmonth growth this December as more customers realise that apps fit into every part of their lives, from social media, shopping, banking and browsing.” There are a few ways in which digital banking can help you to take the hassle out of finances this December. Take turns paying “Carrying a wallet can be a bother particularly if you are anticipating a fun night out. Nominate one person in your group to carry a bank card and to settle the bills for the evening. Then send money to that person via your banking app.

Bertus en Corné Nieuwenhuizen.

Chané en Willem Pretorius.

Lost or stolen cards With lots of social visits and various items lying around the house, two different bags being used for the beach or evenings out, it is easy to lose track of where you have placed your cards, and worse yet is having a card lost or stolen while on holiday and away from home. “We have all lost cards, or have been the victim of theft at some stage, and the feeling of helpless ness can be devastating. Before going on holiday, familiarise yourself with what you have to do in the event that your bank card gets lost or stolen.” Some banks digital banking options might allow you to cancel lost and stolen cards and order new cards with a few swipes and taps. This will give you the assurance that you can cancel your cards as soon as you realise it has been lost or stolen keeping the risk of being defrauded to a minimum. Keeping the lights on There is nothing worse than realising that you have forgotten to load electricity or to pay certain accounts just as you put your feet up. The financial losses and implica tions of missing payments or having a whole freezer defrost could put you on the financial back foot in the new year. Check if your bank has the option of being able to buy prepaid electricity to keep the lights on while you are away. “At a minimum, mobile banking will let you stay in touch with your accounts and keep track of your spending by viewing account balances and transaction histories. Additional features have made banking on holiday possible, easy and convenient.”

Gertie se neef was die teater ghoeroe André Huguenet, wie se regte naam Gert Borstlap was. Haar nooiensvan was Borstlap.

Vier geslagte Van Zyls.

Weekend breakaway: Nostalgic Fauresmith NO more than 11 km away from Jagersfontein in the southwestern Free State, is Fauresmith, a picture postcard dorpie where, until about 15 years ago, trains rattled and clanked their way down the middle of the main street – one of only three towns in the world where this happened. As if to prove it, the tracks are still there. And to complete the nostalgia bit, a beautifully maintained steam locomotive stands proudly in the

centre of the town. Fauresmith is the second oldest town in the Free State, and it very nearly became the capital of the province instead of Bloemfon tein. In fact, when the choice was made, Fauresmith lost out by a mere two votes. Of such near misses is history made.

Fauresmith is well known in equestrian circles because of its annual National Equestrian Enduran ce Race, a threeday event in which the riders and mounts cover 205 km of very tough terrain.

Lag tog ’n slag

Arme Mona Lisa beoefen vele beroepe Jens Friis

In Los Angeles stap ek

. . en toe ek my kop uitsteek, is daar wragtie ’n vyfde.”

BLOEMNAWEEK, VRYDAG 19 DESEMBER 2014 7

Stay fit, be active outdoors

IT’S the ideal time to get proactive about your family’s fitness and spend some quality outdoor time with the kids. As celebrity and master trainer Sean Pettit says in the latest Fedhealth magazine, “There are many fun ways to get your family moving and excited about being active.” Exercise should be a part of your daily activities, even more so when you are on holiday. Toddlers and preschoolers should have two hours of fitness a day. At this age organised exercise isn’t necessary; active play should do the trick. From the age of five upwards your children need around an hour a day of exercise, while children in their early teens should do moderate to vigorous exercise for an hour a

day, at least three times a week. If you are staying at home and cannot get outdoors, Pettit recommends buying a motion sensor adaptor for your gaming station, such as the XBox Kinect, Playstation Move or Wii. This way the whole family can get involved in dancing, racing or even fitness games. For holiday or outdoor activities an enthusiastic (read competitive) game of badminton on the grass or volleyball in the pool can be great entertainment and fitness rolled into one. Plus, a spirited game of frisbee (easy to pack in your beach bag), or a family game of soccer are also great activities for children, teens and adults alike. Fedhealth offers these ideas to keep active this holiday season:

S Take a walk. S Hit the beach. S Pack a (healthy) picnic and head for your closest botanical gardens or nature reserve for a hike. S Go for a swim – (race each other, play Marco Polo, or get the kids to dive in after small swimming toys or even dinky cars). S Be a tourist in your own town. How much do you know about your area, or surrounding areas for that matter? You will be amazed at how many activities there are that you simply don’t have an opportunity to normally explore. “Remember: if the activity isn’t fun, chances are neither you nor the kids will enjoy it.”

1-DAYY SPECIAL PRA PRAYER S. ZHAKI’S 1-DA YER “CHANGED OUR LIVES”

Mr. P Hendrikson bought this lovely house 3- months after attending S. Zhaki's 1-day special prayer.

N. Marelette was single, but found a new husband who married her within 2-months after S. Zhaki had prayed for her.

Mrs. K Gumede had no job, but after attending S. Zhaki's special prayer meeting in Bloem-CBD, I got this new permanent job a few weeks back.

I met this powerful man S. Zhaki on a T.V. program Before I had suffered for years and tried many people for help but all failed. I could not believe it when he showed me my enemies in form of a dream and whatever they were doing to pull me down. Every single detail he showed me about my enemies in the form of a dream and whatever they were doing to pull me down.

Brand verbonde.

By die Hoërskool President Steyn is van links Fanie Griesel (onderhoofseun), Kobus van Tonder (hoofseun), Ilona Pretorius (hoofmeisie) en Carla Jacobs (onderhoofmeisie) as die nuwe hoofleiers gekies.

ACCORDING to statistics, spending on pet care continues to increase in South Africa and this will certainly be the case during the coming festive season. Seven out of ten owners said they would buy Christ mas presents for their pets and more than half would put the gift under the tree. Healthy treats or toys that encourage exercise and play will be excellent gift options for the fourlegged members of your family. A ball or rope toy are classic choices for dogs. Cats enjoy ping pong balls, paper bags or anything that moves easily and makes a bit of noise. When it comes to edible goodies, Dr Guy Fyvie, veterinary advisor for Hill’s Pet Nutrition, says new Hill’s Ideal Balance treats are ideal. “There’s even a festive Turkey and Cranberries variety for dogs and cats will enjoy the Crunchy Naturals Treats with Real Tuna. “If you are watching your pet’s weight (vets say more than half the pets they see are over weight), new Hill’s Prescription Diet Metabolic treats for cats and dogs may be a more suitable option. “They are low in calories and won’t put the waistline at risk when used in conjunction with the right weight loss food. “Rather than overindulging your pet with inappropriate food, or overspending on expensive gifts, the best recipe for a happy pet is a balanced diet, being active and companionship.”

S. Zhaki accurately read my fortune and told me all problems without me speaking a single word to him. Within 6 days after his prayers, my husband left his girlfriend and came back to me plus my enemies approached me and confessed the bad things they did to me. Even though other have failed to deliver to your expectations, this may be your last chance to breakthrough no matter what problem you're facing ! Consultaion Fee: R100.

Things in my life went from good to worse in a very short time. My love live, financial problems jealousy, my husband’s family were all against me. Luckily I came across Sonia through a friend. She helped me and showed me my enemies through a mirror for only R200. She did miracles in my life. She told me all my problems without mentioning anything to her. She showed me the people who worked hard to see me suffering some of which were my friends and relatives. She performed a special prayer, washed away my bad luck and cleansed my home. Gave me a love potion with a ring for my financial problems in less than five days, my husband was always by my side and my enemies confessed and asked for forgiveness. Come and visit me at Bayswater.

TESTIMONY

Mr and Mrs Thabo My last resort to bring back my lost lover. Me and my wife Bridget had given up after losing my job and struggling to keep up with my car and house payment. I had to change schools for my children from private schools to government schools because financially we were not stable anymore, but thanks to my in-law who gave me this woman of God's number, she helped me to turn my life around financially by giving me a magic ring which brought back hope into my life. It cost me only R800 and for the first time in my life I went into a casino with my wife and we used our magic to hit a jackpot. Now my house and car are paid off and my children are back in private schools - now life is so wonderful, so in case you are looking for the best healer, please look no more.

Just CALL MAMA DAVID 079 753 2854. She can also help men with sexual enlargement to all sizes. Visit her in Bayswater next to Spar.
