POSTINGS Greetings from Lake Avenue! Though I have written those four simple words often, I am not sure they have ever given me quite as much joy as they do today. In an effort to bring boys back to campus as safely as possible, we opened the 177th year of the Boys’ Latin School of Maryland with a phased in return to in-person learning. Months of hard work by administrators, faculty and staff, coupled with the support of our alumni, families and friends have made having the boys back on Lake Avenue a reality. In this time of unimaginable change and uncertainty, I can assure you that the spirit of Esse Quam Videri is alive and well. Words cannot effectively express my gratitude to our faculty, whose extraordinary and selfless commitment to providing our boys with the best possible experience is demonstrated every day. Today, as I journeyed across campus, I heard the laughter of lower school boys while eating lunch outside on the lawns. I watched the skill and determination of our student-athletes practicing on the fields, and, all over, I witnessed boys simply happy to be spending time together. A highlight of our return to campus was Opening Convocation, as we rang in the school year with an outdoor ceremony. Our youngest learners were seated next to the podium, our seniors on the bleachers, and the remainder of the student body and faculty tuned
In this edition of the Boys’ Latin Magazine, we share with you how our community responded when the pandemic hit and how our teachers put forth extraordinary effort to create a robust and engaging distance learning program. Our students showed maturity beyond their years, and our families trusted us not only with the education of their sons but with keeping our community connected. We were even able to wrap up the 2019-2020 school year with physically distant, in-person events to celebrate key milestones. We held a car parade to recognize our fifth graders, our eighth graders crossed the bridge as have so many classes before them, and, on June 6, 2020, we held Boys’ Latin’s 176th Commencement ceremony not only to celebrate the many accomplishments of the class of 2020, but to pay tribute to the fortitude and resilience of these wonderful young men. The magazine also includes a story on our western campus with photos and renderings of our boarding program that is set to launch in the fall of 2021. We couldn’t be more excited to expand our reach and provide boys from across the country and around the world with all the opportunities a Boys’ Latin education has to offer. We also look back at our commemoration of Jack Williams Day. On February 4, 2020, we celebrated what would have been the 100th birthday of the late former Headmaster Jack H. Williams ‘38. The boys were treated to lunchtime cupcakes and a BL history lesson from me (I’m sure the cupcakes were the real treat) and the evening concluded with over 150 members of our community, including Mr. Williams’ family, joining us in the Alumni House for a night of remembrance and celebration Several other notable alums are spotlighted in the publication, including middle
school head Brandon Mollett ‘94, Jay Brown ‘78, Laker Buddies Jaylin Andrews ‘18 and Max Woelper ‘25, and football stand-outs Victor Dimukeje ‘17 and Dom Maggio ‘16. Our 2019-2020 Annual Report of Giving is also included in this issue. I am humbled by the support of our alumni and families, students, faculty, and friends which enables us to continue to provide boys with a world-class education. I am grateful to our Board of Trustees for establishing the COVID-19 emergency fund to help families who were directly and significantly impacted by the pandemic. And, I am grateful to all of you who answer the call and believe in and support our School, especially during these challenging times.
While I am not sure what the rest of the year on Lake Avenue will look like, one thing is certain. We will continue to navigate these challenges, holding tight to the fierce determination and positive energy of our community. And we will emerge even stronger and more resilient. As One Boys’ Latin. As One BL. All the best,

COMING FALL 2021 The former Josephite retirement facility is currently being renovated and transformed into a dorm facility.
A NEW CHAPTER By Stephanie McLoughlin We could not be more thrilled to report that on January 16, 2020, Boys’ Latin finalized the purchase of the adjacent 28-acre property from the Society of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart (the Josephites). The acquired property, which increased our campus’s size by 70 percent, will enable Boys’ Latin to launch a residential life program and offer transformative programmatic opportunities for all students, both now and for many years to come. There are several buildings on the property, including a retirement home previously used by the Josephites. This will be converted into a residential living facility in preparation for the launch of our boarding school program in the fall of 2021. The new residential life facility will include expansive common spaces for study and student life, a separate dining area, laundry facilities, faculty apartments, and twenty spacious dorm rooms, each with a private full bathroom. Architects at Hord | Coplan |Macht (HCM) have reimagined the existing space to create a home away from home for the boys. “ We are very excited about the opportunity this new facility and area of campus provides Boys’ Latin as they help young men reach their fullest potential. It continues to be an honor and privilege to partner with BL to help shape the campus and design spaces that support how these young men learn, play, and live,” said PeterWinebrenner, Principal at Hord | Coplan | Macht. The boarding facility is designed to house 40 students who would be spread across the four upper 4
school grades, adding richness to our community while maintaining our small school identity. “ The new boarding program will attract students from around the region and across the country. With our strong alumni network and we are excited to be able to offer the option for former students to send their own sons to Boys’ Latin, whether they live in Maryland or Pennsylvania, or Florida or Texas or California” said Headmaster Chris Post. We are excited to announce our new director of boarding, Michael Williams (pictured below). Michael comes to us with a wealth of boarding experience from Shady Side Academy and, most recently, Millbrook School, and he is thrilled to be joining the Boys’ Latin community. “The opportunity to create and implement an innovative dorm culture at Boys’ Latin is a dream come true for me and my family. We consider ourselves lucky to be part of such a welcoming community where authentic relationships are valued,” said Williams. The new property will provide boundless opportunities for our boys, as we strive to meet the ever-changing needs of our students in an ever-changing world.
Each of the residence hall’s twenty dormitory rooms will be sized at approximately 350 sq. ft. and will include a full bathroom.
The residence hall will include expansive common spaces for study and student life.
The residential life facility will be equipped with a full-size kitchen and will hold a central dining area for boarding students. 5
WELCOME BACK! By Stephanie McLoughlin As the school year wrapped up and summer began we focused on our goal for 2020-2021: providing an inperson experience, as safely as possible, for as many students as possible. If the past several months taught us anything, it’s that the situation is dynamic, and the need for adaptability is paramount. Given that truth, we constructed scenarios that would allow us to offer five-days a week in-person learning, blended learning, or distance learning as conditions required. After months of strategizing and scenario planning, we recognized that the best opportunity to minimize potential exposure to COVID-19 and bring boys back to Lake Avenue was to implement a phased-in return to campus. We began the year by bringing our youngest learners back to campus, while older students learned virtually. Throughout September, students would gradually return to in-person learning with middle and upper school students in a blended learning model - spending a few days a week on campus and a few days distance learning. We also offered families the opportunity for an entirely virtual learning experience, and in preparation, equipped every classroom with two cameras for live streaming. Orientation kicked off the week of August 31, with boys coming to campus in small groups to collect supplies and learn new protocols and procedures. The following week our students began their return to campus, joyful once again at being back on Lake Avenue and able to interact with classmates and teachers. On September 18, we officially opened the school year with Opening Convocation. Rather than gathering the student body in the Iglehart Center, this year’s outdoor convocation saw our kindergarteners seated on the field, while the senior class filled the bleachers and the rest of the students
6
and faculty joined via live stream. Student Body President Jonathan Elliott ‘21 opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and the School’s Mission Statement, after which Headmaster Chris Post welcomed everyone “formally and finally” to the 177th school year. Mr. Post went on to retell the story of the closing of Brevard Street 60 years ago and Boys’ Latin’s move to Lake Avenue. “When faced with insurmountable odds, everyone did his part.” said Headmaster Post as he spoke about the relocation from Brevard Street, and what it will mean for each one to do his part this year. Mr. Post concluded by saying, “We’re back! It’s a great day to be a Laker!” The lower school was the first division to have boys back on campus five days a week. Lower school head, Greg Schnitzlein credits the entire community for the smooth return. “Our return to in-person learning at Boys’ Latin has truly been a group effort. It has taken dedication, compassion, patience and trust from the entire Boys’ Latin community. Our staff, teachers, students, and parents all share responsibility for the success we have experienced bringing our campus back to life. Throughout all of this, our students remain happy, engaged, and have demonstrated unparalleled resilience each and every day. No time in my fifteen years on Lake Avenue have I been more proud to be a Laker,” said Schnitzlein. And, we couldn’t be any prouder of our boys for learning to do what’s difficult – and what’s right.

READY FOR IN-PERSON LEARNING? YOU BET! By Stephanie McLoughlin
As we entered the summer of 2020, we began to prepare our campus for students’ return in the fall. Not just for some students — for all students. While we knew that guidelines might require us to teach virtually or operate in a blended model, our goal was to be able to have our entire community back on campus, because, at our core, we are a community that thrives on being together. Stephen Dubin ‘79 (Director of Facilities), Bill Ryan (Director of Safety and Security), and Wayne Cornish (Facilities Technical Specialist) spearheaded the efforts to prepare campus, assisted by their team of often unsung heroes Richard Howard, Flavio Reyes, Gil Rodgers, Randy Staines, and Darrin Tucker. The result of their months of hard work was nothing short of miraculous. One of the biggest challenges was to de-densify classrooms and building spaces to ensure proper social distancing. Every classroom was measured, desks were rearranged, and our small classes became even smaller. Non-traditional areas were turned into classroom spaces. The lower school library now serves as the kindergarten. Areas in both the Gelston Athletic Center and the Iglehart Center, along with the wrestling room, are also being used as instructional spaces. Five oversized tents arrived on campus in late August to serve as additional classroom spaces and meeting areas, and 115 additional chairs and desk sets were purchased to accommodate new classrooms. Two modulars arrived on campus in September, with one serving as a classroom and the other as an additional health suite to separate students 8
who become ill with COVID-like symptoms. Traffic patterns within our buildings have been rerouted, and hallway dividers are being used to preserve social distancing. Throughout campus, signage reminds students to wash their hands and stay six feet apart, and student drop off has become a well-orchestrated ballet to safely bring students into buildings with separate entrances for each grade. A two-camera system has been installed in every classroom, allowing for the live streaming of classes so boys can engage in their lessons if they are unable to come to School, and to provide families with the option of an entirely virtual learning experience. The table was set for the boys to return to campus, but the work had only begun. Throughout the day, high-touch spaces and classrooms are cleaned and sanitized, and on weekends, campus is closed for a thorough deep cleaning. All commmuniy members wear masks through the day and every classroom is equipped with sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer. Lunch is eaten in socially distant groups, and boys can either bring their own food or order a lunch that is delivered directly to their classrooms. Hearing lower schoolers’ laughter, witnessing older boys engage in their lessons, and watching our campus come alive with our Laker spirit made it all worth it. Because, as we like to say, it’s always a great day to be a Laker!

VIRTUAL LEARNING BEGINS By Stephanie McLoughlin This past spring, as the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States and in-person learning was suspended across Maryland, Boys’ Latin students packed up their desks and lockers, faculty assembled their teaching supplies and computers, and everyone headed home. We set up home offices, study rooms, found quiet spaces to work and Zoom, and we crossed fingers and hoped that our return to Lake Avenue would be swift. It was not. But we were ready. Our faculty worked tirelessly to provide students with experiences that were consistent with our mission and values — experiences that were meaningful, creative, and purposeful while continuing to build the essential skills of critical thinking, problem-solving, and, most important, resilience. Our faculty’s creativity was unmatched; lower school boys competed in a coding challenge and enjoyed weekly storytime with Mr. Post, seventh graders took a virtual camping trip, biology students conducted a virtual photosynthesis lab while chemistry students made rock candy, and the college counseling office hosted Monday night college talks with young alumni. And these are only a few examples of the ways teachers actively engaged boys in learning.
As spring drew to a close, we knew how important it was to celebrate our students’ many accomplishments and especially the Class of 2020. We held a car parade to celebrate our fifth graders, eighth grade students participated in the bridge crossing (socially distant, of course), and awards and banners were delivered to our robotics team and spring athletes. But, there is no doubt that this spring was hardest on our seniors. Understanding, or at least trying to understand, their feeling of loss, we delivered personalized yard signs to each one of them, hosted a (socially distant) 176th graduation, and in July brought our newest alumni to campus to celebrate together. The 2020-2021 school year will look a little different. As we undertake a phased-in return to in-person learning, numerous measures have been taken to ensure the health and well-being of our community: classrooms have been dedensified, tents and modulars adorn campus, social distancing is being observed, and everyone is wearing masks. But we know that whether we are learning in our virtual schoolhouse or on campus, our priorities remain the same - ensuring that each and every one of our students is known for who he is today and all that he will be tomorrow.
SUMMER BY THE LAKE By Katie Reid Last spring, the global pandemic challenged teachers across the world to create meaningful experiences for their students in brand new ways—Boys’ Latin faculty rose to that challenge and continued to deliver highquality education into the summer. On July 6, Boys’ Latin launched Summer By the Lake, a four-week virtual summer camp program for students ages 5-17. One hundred forty-four campers participated in a robust set of classes offered by BL teachers. Children in the program went on underwater adventures, traveled across the globe, learned how to use Photoshop, built their own roller coasters and more—all from the comfort of their own homes! Pam Hamm, the program co-director said, “It was 10
amazing that we could provide these opportunities to nearly 150 students and not only to BL students but students outside our community, as well.” What’s more, Boys’ Latin offered all BL students one free week of camp. It sounds like Summer By the Lake is here to stay, and next year the plan is to run the program on Lake Avenue!

CELEBRATING THE
CLASS OF 2020 By: Stephanie McLoughlin
On June 6, 2020, Boys’ Latin hosted our 176th Commencement ceremony. While the day looked different than prior commencements, our Laker pride and spirit were alive and well. The Class of 2020 and their families came to campus one at a time, and like many classes before them, they received their diplomas under the white tent in front of Williams Hall. In the morning, a ‘mini’ commencement took place. The ceremony opened and closed with bagpipe music played by Andrew Shriver McGowan ’12. In his remarks, Headmaster Chris Post recognized the work of our extraordinary faculty and expressed gratitude to the class of 2020. “I am grateful for our time together. I am grateful for the model you have set for our school and community. I am grateful for your leadership. For trusting us with your hopes and dreams while entrusting us with your hurts and pain, too. I am grateful for your
efforts to lift-up one another. I am grateful for all that you have taught me. And I thank you for showing me all that I have left to learn.” Mr. Post remarked. Jake Miller ’20 gave the valedictory address; he shared hopeful comments and thanked his classmates, peers, and faculty for helping him become the young man he is today. “The success I have worked to experience was fostered by the way Boys’ Latin cared. Our community cared for me; I was not afraid to fail because I knew if I did, my brothers would be there to catch my fall; they would be there to lighten the load,” said Miller. Following the commencement ceremony, families came to campus one at a time. The boys received their diplomas and Mr. Post gave his traditional personalized comments about each boy. We are optimistic that we will be able to bring the entire class of 2020 to campus soon, and we can’t wait!

GRADUATING SENIOR SPOTLIGHT KENDALL WALKER ‘20
14
By: Alex Barron On Lake Avenue, Kendall Walker ’20 was well known for what he does on the basketball court – and for a good reason. He was a key contributor on the team, a solid defender and top scorer, who played nearly every minute of every game in his junior and senior seasons. His dramatic game-winning shot against Gilman was one of the highlights of his career, and a moment that he lists among the best parts of his upper school experience.
“I asked some of the guys if they would want to talk to upperclassmen about challenges they faced at School,” he says, “ Lots of the time, kids will really open up to their fellow students.”
But what spectators may not realize is that basketball was just one of Kendall’s many school activities. During his time on Lake Avenue, he spent countless hours contributing to BAC (Black Awareness Club) and Diversity Club, volunteering as a Laker Buddy, singing in the chorus, helping to guide the Student Council, and tutoring peers in the Writing Center. To top it off, he even ran a season of cross country.
“[At BL] I have people that I can call my brothers, and also teachers who I feel very comfortable with,” he says, “[I]t was nice to know that they would do anything they could to help me succeed.”
All of these extra-curriculars complemented a rigorous academic schedule: Kendall graduated having taken seven AP classes. He considers his performance in AP United States History his proudest success in the classroom. “[It] was easily the most challenging course I have ever taken,” he says, “I struggled at the beginning, so the amount of growth and hard work I did to finish with a B+ is something I am really proud of.” Never one to shy away from a good challenge, Kendall made perhaps his most enduring mark on the community in the fall of his senior year. He wondered if some of his peers, especially underclassmen, would benefit from mentorship that was different than what was provided by faculty advisors. With help from Mr. McDonald and others, he created the Senior Council, a board of seniors who would help to advise peers in certain situations.
Throughout the year, the Council met with students over lunch, creating a relaxed, low-pressure environment. Relationships like those forged in Senior Council are what Kendall valued most about BL.
Kendall’s teachers can attest to his success in and out of the classroom. “He was solid and reliable without ever being boring or predictable,” says Kristen Tubman, who worked closely with Kendall as the faculty sponsor of Black Awareness and Diversity Club, “He stepped in to mentor freshmen, and it was obvious that he had a talent for it. He’s always authentic. And he clearly cared about the younger students.” Michael Austin ’21, Kendall’s basketball teammate, attests to his leadership ability. “It’s not like he ever commanded you. He just encouraged you,” says Michael, who entered BL as a junior, “Whenever I struggled with a play in basketball, he’d go over film with me to make sure I had it down.” Kendall is a freshman at Morehouse College and plans to play basketball. It’s a guarantee that he’ll find ways to contribute to his new community.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: BRANDON MOLLETT ground. Problem-solving, he says, is a challenge he looks forward to embracing in his next job: Academic Dean. The job is designed to oversee academic practices and standards across all three divisions. “Part of the unique opportunity in this role is that it hasn’t existed in a while, and I have the chance to redefine it,” he says.
By: Alex Barron In his nineteen years at Boys’ Latin, Brandon Mollett has worn numerous hats. He has, at various times, taught Latin, English and world cultures, coached soccer and JV lacrosse, and instructed middle school Innovation courses in such quirky subjects as model rocket construction. His connection to BL runs deep. He is a graduate of the class of 1994, and a legacy student: both his father and his brother were Lakers as well. After a short stint writing and editing for Inside Lacrosse Magazine, he returned to his alma mater, where he has been ever since. “I feel fortunate to have found both a school and profession that are deeply satisfying,” he says, “Every day I am grateful for the opportunities that Boys’ Latin has given me to work with the boys on the field, in the classroom, and as an administrator.” Of course, Mr. Mollett is most well-known of late as the Head of Middle School, a job he has held for the past eight years. Under his watch, the middle school has undergone significant change. He and his faculty developed its successful Innovation Program, revamped its advisory program, and offered new athletic options like golf, rockclimbing, and futsal (a fast-paced South American game similar to soccer). His philosophy is simple. “It’s all about asking, what can I do to help kids? What’s going to do the greatest good for the greatest number of people?,” he says, “And then figuring out, how can we make this happen?” Mr. Mollett has always enjoyed figuring out the logistical puzzles that are required in getting any new idea off the 16
Brandon looks forward to floating between divisions. His prime goal, he says, is to make sure that students and faculty are on the same page in terms of their commitment to supporting BL’s mission through rigorous academics. “My job is to help create a consistent experience for our students across the curriculum,” he says, “That means providing support for faculty, hearing what they’re saying, and helping them to help kids.” Mr. Mollett is one of few BL faculty who can claim to have worked at least some time in the upper, middle, and lower schools. Between his varied professional experience and his having attended Boys’ Latin himself, he might well know the ins and outs of the School better than anyone else on campus. “It’s so inspiring to see a BL grad rise through the ranks and take on this role,” says upper school Dean of Students Mac McDonald, who figures to work closely with Brandon, “Brandon knows this community well and we know he’ll do good things.” Assistant Headmaster Sean Kriebel looks forward to seeing what Mollett will do with the position. “We really haven’t had a K-through-12 academic dean in at least the last nine years,” says Mr. Kriebel, “With the return of this position, comes an opportunity to really focus on the academic program holistically, instead of just division by division.” He adds, “Brandon has the perfect experience to step in and hit the ground running.” Brandon has agreed to stay on as middle school head for the 2020-2021 school year to provide stability as the School continues to contend with these uncertain times. Throughout the course of the year, Brandon will begin the transition into his new role.
THE BOYS’ LATIN ALUMNI ASSOCIATION: NETWORKING AND LIVE STREAM Similarly, our Live Stream Committee is a group of nine Alumni Board members, who worked to obtain BL’s live stream service. Due to their efforts, as well as the efforts of the entire Alumni Board, we now have cameras on J. Duncan Smith Field for lacrosse and football home events, and in the Gelston Athletic Center for all basketball, wrestling, and volleyball home events. All events can be viewed on your computer at locallive. tv/boyslatinmd. To view archived events you will need to use the password, Lakers1844. Events may also be viewed on the mobile app. Just search ‘locallive’, download, and follow the directions. When asked, you will need to enter the access code, Lat1. By Brian Rudick ’87, Alumni Board President Since its inception, the Boys’ Latin Alumni Association’s mission has been to promote the best interests of BL and its alumni. To ensure the success of that mission the Association created sub-committees under the Alumni Board. Two of these are our Networking and Live Stream committees. The Networking Committee, created six years ago by Shawn Walter ’95, is a group of eight Alumni Board members, who host multiple networking events for a wide range of alumni. The first of these, The Networking Initiative, was created to afford college alumni the opportunity to network and build relationships with established alums from various businesses and industries. This event is held annually during college students’ winter break.
We are seeking underwriters for our live streaming service. As an underwriter, you are provided with a unique marketing opportunity to gain exposure within this venerable Baltimore community, while also making an impact on BL and its athletic programs. To learn more about being an underwriter, contact Assistant Director of Alumni Relations, Taylor Stothoff ’11, at tstothoff@boyslatinmd.com. In keeping with our mission, we will continue to serve BL and our alumni so that they know that our School is not only an outstanding institution, but also a place they can call home. We invite all members of the BL community to use our services frequently – they are for you!
As the Networking Committee has expanded, so have our services. We now hold events such as The Young Professionals Networking Night, directed toward providing a space where working alumni can connect with each other in order to build their professional network. We’ve also invested in an online platform called Boys’ Latin Connect. The platform is free and is a tool that we want the entire BL community to use to help connect and network with each other. We encourage everyone to sign up at www. boyslatinconnect.com.

JACK WILLIAMS DAY By: Mac Kennedy ‘76
February 4, 2020, marked what would have been the 100th birthday of the late former Headmaster Jack H. Williams ‘38. When Will Alokones ‘20 realized it was the revered Headmaster’s 100th birthday, it gave him an idea. His idea was for the entire School to celebrate Mr. Williams’ 100th birthday, and so began the planning for a birthday party honoring his life and legacy. On the evening of February 4, over 150 members of the BL community, including Mr. Williams’ family, came to the Julian S. Smith Alumni House for a night of remembrance and celebration. Kyle Gore, a current trustee and student under Mr. Williams, spoke about the last time he saw Mr. Williams and the kindness he showed all the boys. Headmaster Chris Post made closing remarks on the impact Jack Williams had on Boys’ Latin throughout the years, “Were it not for his visionary leadership and his courageous spirit, Boys’ Latin would not be here today. And the rest, as they say, is history. More than 175 years of history.” During the day, the boys were treated to cake and cupcakes, as well as a history lesson from Mr. Post on Mr. Williams’ life and legacy. Alumni who attended BL during Mr. Williams’ tenure as Headmaster (19621978) know that this great School would not exist had it not been for Mr. Williams. He found and secured the finances to buy and relocate the School from Brevard Street to our location here on Lake Avenue. Headmaster Williams was a special man. A kind man. Longtime BL Classics Department Chair John Bowling H’10, who passed away in 2017 after serving 50 years at BL, said it best. He
18
wrote, “Mr. Williams’ philosophy that Boys’ Latin was here to serve students and not the other way around prevented the kinds of chauvinistic appeals that make an idol of an institution at the expense of the individual. Each person was respected for who he was, and not merely for an athletic or academic prominence he happened to possess.” Jack Williams’ Day also provided opportunities for the BL community to give back to the School in his honor. Several generous donors agreed to match dollar for dollar any new or increased gift – up to $50k. The BL community responded with generosity, helping the School raise over $125k in honor of our beloved former Headmaster. The Class of 2020 boasted one hundred percent participation, and their collective gift was matched by two additional donors raising an extra $10k for the School. What a great day, February 4, 2020 was for Boys’ Latin School. Thank you, Jack Williams!

Jack Kerns ‘52 Clearly Evident Award Given annually to a member of the BL faculty or staff member where it is “clearly evident” that person exemplifies the same kind of quality, dedication and devotion to the school as Jack Kerns did. Robin Smith 2020
Raleigh Brent ‘44 Award Given each year to a person in the BL community, NOT an alumnus of the school, who has contributed greatly to the well-being of the institution and because of their dedication and commitment to the school made Boys’ Latin School a better place for all. Honorary Alumni Awards Given to individuals who have never received a BL diploma, however, through loyalty and dedication to BL it is felt these individuals bleed maroon and white and, as such, deserve being recognized as honorary alumni - one of the school’s most coveted awards. DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS ROBERT G. MERRICK ‘12 evacuate the wounded. For his bravery and courage he was also awarded the French Croix de Guerre (Bronze Star.) He became a Captain and eventually a Major in the Field Artillery Branch of the Reserve Corps.
By: Mac Kennedy ‘76 Mr. Robert Merrick is one of three BL men honored in 2020 as a Distinguished Alumnus of the Boys’ Latin School. Robert G. Merrick ’12 was born November 18, 1895. He entered Boys’ Latin in September of 1909 for his sophomore year following in the footsteps of his older brother Seymour S. Merrick, who graduated from BL in 1907. He was a good student especially in history, mathematics, Latin, French and German. Transcript comments accompanying his English grades read either “good” or “very good.” He was an accomplished athlete and The Baltimore News reported he was a member of the gymnastics exhibition his sophomore year. As a junior it was reported by The Baltimore Sun that he came in third place in the junior class running high jump. During his senior year he fell ill and was forced to leave school in November of 1911. Merrick did however, receive enough BL credits to allow him entrance into The Johns Hopkins University where he graduated with an A.B. degree in 1917. When America entered World War I in 1917, Merrick enlisted in the army as a private and was assigned to the 10th Field Artillery. While serving in Europe he distinguished himself in battle and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross when pressed into service as a runner under heavy bombardment, driving an ambulance three times to
After his military service in France was over he returned to Johns Hopkins University and received a Ph.D. in Political Economy in 1922. He then entered the mortgage business and later became associated with the Maryland Mortgage Company. After remaining with that firm for a short period, he joined the Maryland Title Securities Company and was soon elected president of that organization. In 1932, he resigned from this post to accept the Presidency of the Equitable Trust Company, retaining the position of Chairman of the Board of the Maryland Title Securities Company. He was just 36 years old at the time. After Mr. Merrick entered the banking industry he quickly became one of the leaders in the Baltimore financial market. He worked as president of Equitable Trust Bank for nearly 40 years, eventually becoming Chairman of the Board. He grew the bank from a small bank with $20 million in assets and five branches to a $438 million operation with 53 branches in the Baltimore metropolitan area. His philanthropic pursuits grew through his years and many Baltimore institutions benefited from his enormous generosity. Mr. Merrick served on many Boards throughout the Maryland region. Mr. Merrick also was one of the original donors to Boys’ Latin School when the school purchased the Llewellyn Property and moved out to Lake Avenue from Brevard Street in 1960. The University of Baltimore’s business school from 1982-1996 received three major gifts from the foundation Mr. Merrick established and today the UB business school is known as the University of Baltimore’s Merrick School of Business. According to The University of Baltimore website, “each time a student graduates from the Merrick School of Business, the practical vision of its benefactor becomes a tangible part of the Baltimore community [Mr. Merrick] so loved.” 21
LAKER STORIES marking period. As I was closing the office door, Mr. Williams was leaving Mr. Temple’s office across the hall. He saw me and asked me to walk with him. As I walked at a snail’s pace in the general direction of his office, he asked me, “Why are you in a study hall?” A rhetorical question, I thought. Study halls were given to those who performed poorly in a course. I knew that he knew this.
JAY BROWN ‘78 By: Mac Kennedy ‘76 Jay Brown ‘78 attended the Jack Williams Day celebration last February here in the Alumni House and told the school, “I wouldn’t have missed this.” His given name is Jack, but he is a “Jr.” and chose to go by “Jay.” He preferred Jay. He recently wrote that NOBODY called him by his given name. He remembers first meeting former Headmaster Jack Williams ‘38 with his parents when he was applying to BL. His mom introduced him as Jay, and told Mr. Williams that he preferred it to Jack. Mr. Williams turned to Jay and introduced himself - “Mr. Williams...Jack Williams.” Mr. Williams told Jay that some of his favorite people were named Jack - the best golfer in the world, a great president who, although formally named John, went by Jack, and back then, there was a local sportscaster named Jack Dawson. “Mr. Williams never called me Jay,” he writes. “He called me Jack. I didn’t mind one bit.”

I stared down at my Docksiders, bracing myself for what I was certain was coming. Mr. Williams was part dad - you hated to disappoint him, and I had, and I knew it. I didn’t do well in Commander Albright’s Chemistry course. It was up until that point, the most difficult course I’d taken. For me, it was the first course that required taking what I’d learned in one discipline - mathematics (algebra), and applying it to a seemingly unrelated course - chemistry. It landed me in a study hall, and my Headmaster wanted to discuss it. This was going to be hard, or so I believed. I was wrong. Mr. Williams turned to me and said in a normal conversation voice: “Jack Albright tells me you have the mind and aptitude to do well in his class, you just need to apply yourself.” As I was preparing my excuses and explanations, Mr. Williams took my shoulder firmly yet gently and stared at me with those eyes, greying eyebrows, and simply said: “It’s in you.” After several seconds he smiled that Jack Williams smile and gave my shoulder a gentle shake. That was his way of mussing your hair and of saying without words - “I have confidence in you.”
Jay is a remarkable BL graduate and not unlike many who studied under Headmaster Williams, Mr. Williams knew Jay. He recently wrote the following about Jack Williams.
When that marking period ended, I’d just made it under the wire - a “B.” For the remainder of the course - “A’s.”
I remember leaving the upper school office one morning, shortly after the beginning of a new
I ran into Mr. Williams later that school year, the week before the next school year’s courses were to be selected. Again, he asked me to walk with
CAMPUS NEWS him. “Jack Albright thinks you should take his Physics course. He thinks you’d enjoy it and do well.” I remember this clearly. He turned and said with that dad voice: “I think you should give it a try.” Flash forward to 2020. My career: I’m a Radio-pharmacy chemist at the Positron Emission Tomography Center, at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. My discipline is a combination of particle physics and chemistry. Apparently, Mr. Williams knew Jay Brown better than Jay Brown knew Jay Brown.

Latin. We try to make all the Loyola home games and he usually gets a quick hug with Jaylin after every game and they usually text and Instagram message each other after the games as well. And [Jaylin recently] texted me [writing] ‘thanks for letting [me] be a part of Max’s life.’ It’s [my] honor and happiness that we connected.” Jaylin is having a fabulous career so far at Loyola. As a sophomore, he is now part of the playing rotation. Last year, he was named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team after averaging nearly seven points per game while playing in 30 games and starting the final 16. Jaylin and Max plan on remaining close friends, and I am sure they will.
By: Mac Kennedy ‘76 The Boys’ Latin School’s Laker Buddy program is special. For years, upperclassmen have volunteered their time during the school day to help lower school faculty teach and mentor lower school students. Each upperclassman in the program is given a lower school student to be his “Laker Buddy.” One relationship has really blossomed beyond Lake Avenue – the one between BL basketball star Jaylin Andrews ’18 and Max Woelper ’25. Max was in the second grade when he first met Jaylin. Jaylin Andrews now plays for the Loyola University Maryland men’s basketball team. But before taking his talents down Charles Street to Loyola, he was a four-year starter for Coach Cliff Rees here at BL. Jaylin is also BL’s alltime leading scorer accumulating 1,613 points, breaking the School record that had lasted for over 40 years. The friendship between Jaylin and Max continues. Max and his family started watching Jaylin play games here at BL, and now they attend many games at Reitz Arena where Loyola plays its home games. Max’s dad Kip recently wrote: “I think the relationship just grew from watching him play at BL and Loyola. He still has the headband and the note Jaylin sent him after his senior year at Boys’

quarterback and was one of the best all-around athletes I’ve ever coached.” In addition, Coach Sandusky said, “More importantly, Dom is a top-shelf person.” Dom was named an Under Armour High School AllAmerican punter his senior year – the first and only student from BL to be so honored – and continued his kicking career at Wake Forest University. In fact, according to the Baltimore Sun, he was recruited by the same assistant coach who recruited Kirk to UCLA in the mid-1980s.
LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON By Mac Kennedy ’76 Middle school art teacher Kirk Maggio has always been good with his hands. He is a painter by trade, and some of his beautiful works can be seen on BL’s campus. Kirk paints portraits of many professional football players and golfers, and some of this work hangs in M&T Bank Stadium in downtown Baltimore. But Kirk is also good with his feet. And his son Dom, a member of the Class of 2016, has followed in his footsteps. Kirk was the quarterback and kicker for the Calvert Hall Cardinals in high school in the early 1980s but was recruited to play college football as a punter. He chose to attend UCLA and eventually became an All-American punter for the Bruins. Kirk’s dream was to punt in the NFL. He was drafted in the 12th-round by the Green Bay Packers and had another chance with the New Orleans Saints, but he didn’t make either team. He later spent some time with the Birmingham Fire in the World League and was voted second-team All-League two straight years, but eventually he decided to stop playing football and pursue his other passion, painting. Dom was a three-sport standout here at BL, with football and baseball as his top sports. Dom kicked and punted for Ritchie Schell’s football squads and was also a backup quarterback. Kirk, for a few years, was on Coach Schell’s staff. Former Laker offensive coordinator Jim Sandusky H’17 always raved about Dom’s quarterback skills. He recently said, “Dom could have been an All-Conference 24
Dom also has dreams of playing in the NFL, and he always acknowledges the support his family – especially his dad – gives him. He recently told the Wake Forest Kickoff Magazine, “Since I began playing football when I was 10, [my dad] had been the one to teach me all the tricks of the trade. I had fun with it and was blessed with his type of ability, and he’s taught me all the way up. He’s been instrumental in all the success that I’ve had.” Kirk continues to be Dom’s biggest fan and has been keeping a close eye on his pro football opportunities. This past spring Dom was signed by the Baltimore Ravens, but unfortunately, COVID-19 interrupted all NFL camps and no preseason games were played. It was during the preseason games where Dom had hoped to show-off his talents to the Ravens and the rest of the entire league. The Ravens felt it best to release Dom just prior to the shortened 2020 training camp. In the meantime, Dom continues to perfect his craft and hopes when the next NFL opportunity come his way, he will be ready.
SIGHTS SET ON NFL By Mac Kennedy ’76 This past July, Duke University’s 6-2, 265-pound defensive end Victor Dimukeje ’17 was named to The Maxwell Football Club’s preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, which is presented annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football. This was Victor’s second career selection on the Bednarik Award Watch List. Football was not always on Victor’s mind. Boys’ Latin’s head football coach Ritchie Schell reported that Victor came to BL his sophomore year and played three years of varsity football for the Lakers. Prior to enrolling at BL, he had only played two years of organized football. According to Schell, when Victor left Lake Avenue for Durham, North Carolina, his upside was “tremendous.” He was a three-star recruit and the No. 4 senior defensive end in Maryland coming out of high school. The former first team Baltimore Sun All-Metro performer received nearly 40 scholarships to play college football - receiving more scholarship offers than any other player in Boys’ Latin School football history.
According to his BL coaches Victor told them that Duke just felt like “home.” Other factors were the academics as well as playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference against other good programs, where he could showcase his talents.
Victor seriously considered attending Virginia Tech, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, and Notre Dame but eventually chose Duke University. The Blue Devils were pretty much in “the lead” the whole way and his official visit to Durham sealed the deal making his final decision an easy one. “The relationship between the coaches and the players, just the overall environment and the people surrounding you, was important,” he told The Baltimore Sun. “I had a chance to talk with teachers and I just loved everything I saw.”
Victor is a defensive menace for Duke’s football team opponents. In 38 career games (38 starts) for the Blue Devils, Victor has 122 tackles, 14.0 sacks, one interception, three caused fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. He has played 2,043 career snaps and owns 24 games with three or more tackles and eight outings with five or more stops, including a career-high eight tackles against Wake Forest in 2019. He currently sits tied for sixth alltime in Duke’s career sacks chart and is nine sacks away from breaking the record. Victor is majoring in evolutionary anthropology while pursuing a certificate in markets and management. The NFL is on his radar and so far he’s received feedback from many interested teams. Coach Schell and the BL coaching staff believe he has a good chance to continue his football career playing on Sundays!

Dear Alumni, Families and Friends, On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, I want to extend my most sincere gratitude for your considerable investment in Boys’ Latin during the 2019-2020 school year. Needless to say, it was a year of uncertainty filled with many challenges, but once again, you came through with more than 1,280 gifts to the School -- representing $3.5M in total support. Our community’s exceptional generosity allowed us to balance the School’s budget with a minimum draw from the endowment. Most important, it allowed us to continue to advance our mission, instilling the values of courage, integrity and compassion in each boy, which during these troubling times is more important than ever. Highlights of the giving year include: • • • • •
A record of $1,258,248 in unrestricted giving to The Laker Fund A record total of $1,881,850 in unrestricted and restricted gifts made to The Laker Fund $1.6M in capital and endowment gifts A 22% increase in total giving (includes capital and endowment gifts) over last year A 27% participation rate among alumni --- the highest of all Baltimore schools
In the pages that follow, we recognize and honor all of the individuals who made this remarkable year possible. We are humbled once again by the spirit of philanthropy that resonates throughout our incredible community. As we enter the 2020-2021 academic year, we continue to rely on your investments in Boys’ Latin to ensure that we provide boys and young men with a world-class education. Thank you in advance for your consideration and for your past generosity and support. Most gratefully,

REPORT OF THE LAKER FUND The annual giving program has reached new milestones each of the past three years. This past year, Boys’ Latin’s Laker Fund became the third largest annual fund among independent schools in the Baltimore area -- raising over $1.85 million. The Laker Fund is a vital part of BL’s finances. Tuition alone accounts for only 80% of the cost of a BL education. Continued investment in this critical fund notably helps to support everything Boys’ Latin: faculty salaries, benefits, financial aid, and all components of the student experience. Our goal is to raise $2 million a year, for the next five years, during the pledge period of the campaign.
