The latest fashion trends from The Busselton-Dunsborough Life’s resident fashion expert...

Winter Fashion

easier to wear when transitioning from one busy weekend activity to the next. It’s all about adding in a subtle sporty edge to the look. Try wearing a graphic printed sweatshirt and luxury sneakers with a midi skirt. The athleisure trend is becoming more and more evident in men’s fashion too. Mix up classic heritage pieces, such as blazers, cardigans and shirts with cuffed-at-the-ankle track pants, slim sports tops and puffer gilets. Texture plays a big part so look out for items in tweed and cotton and mix with neoprene, mesh fabric and nylon. Finish off with cool quality sneakers in a slim fit in white or a bright colour, or go for a retro look by opting for a vintage pair.

Layer up for the cooler months

Building a winter wardrobe is a welcome opportunity to get to play with layers and to have fun putting together all sorts of textures. Think about introducing new on-trend pieces to the wardrobe that can be worn year after year, complementing items already owned. A clear standout from the Autumn/Winter runways was the 70’s vibe, which has been reworked this time around to feature more modern shapes as well as an extra luxe feel. So expect to see plenty of pant suits in a wide leg with beautifully soft belted jackets, retro lapels, denim on denim, flared indigo jeans, fedora hats and lots of tan accessories. Culottes are well and truly here to stay for another season and will make just as big a statement in winter as they did in autumn. So long as they have an A-line shape and fall at the lower calf, they will look elegant as well as fresh. Wear them with a sweater that shows off the fitted waist of the culottes and a pair of platform ankle boots or heeled knee highs. Love them or hate them, turtlenecks are making a surprise reappearance in stores this winter! Fortunately, due to their mixed appeal and because they only really suit those with graceful long necks, there are also plenty of beautifully structured pieces of knitwear in luxurious textures out there too. These look wonderful with culottes, voluminous midi skirts and wide pants. When it comes to the weekend, look for pieces that encapsulate the athleisure look, which cleverly combines gym with streetwear. It’s not as glamourous or blingy as the sports-luxe trend so is much

Designer Heaven SunSoaked

SunSoaked at Salacia

Launched by designer Kate Davis Steer in 2012, SunSoaked was born following a shopping trip for her daughter that revealed a total lack of stylish rashies on the high street. With a background in fashion and design, it was then that Kate embarked on a journey to create a chic and fashion forward sun protection label without compromising on UV protection. Coining the word ‘swim top’ to describe her newly designed and more feminine rashies, SunSoaked’s first collection of swim tops was a sell-out and the label has now added coordinated swim shorts, swim skirts and swimsuits to the range. With a growing distribution network throughout Australia and overseas, SunSoaked’s stylish designs and sun protective qualities have proved to be an overwhelming success. To view the latest SunSoaked collection, visit exclusive stockist Salacia at Shop 3, 90-92 Queen Street, Busselton.

Bogs Footwear

Hailing from the Pacific Northwest US state of Oregon, Bogs Footwear knows a thing or two about designing boots to withstand the harshest of weather conditions. Founded in 2002, originally as a manufacturer of boots for the farm and agricultural industry, it wasn’t long before its stylish, 100% waterproof creations were in big demand in the high street. Designed using highly durable, natural, high quality vulcanised rubber, leather and special non-slip technology, Bogs offers unrivalled comfort and warmth together with a fabulous range of colourful, expressive styles perfect for temperate to sub-zero conditions. Greta Diaries

Loosen Up . . . …those laces ladies and ease your tired feet into new-again cool-again sneakers. With ahhh-worthy spongy rubber soles and soft leather uppers, put a statement spin on weekend looks with Softinos from Portugal in a myriad of colours. Their brand slogan is “Happy Feet” … for a reason. Comfort is Cool . . . . . . and Arcopedico rules. Never have “proper shoes” looked so good. These Portuguese gems with double arch support are as light as a feather, feel like slippers on your feet and fit everyone. No foot problem is too much. No look they don’t go with. Let your feet fall in love and try these on. Bet you won’t stop at one …. Want to get comfy AND look amazing? Simply follow me on Facebook (ShoeBeDoo.Bunbury.Dunsborough) and Instagram (shoebedooshoes) to be in the everyday know. As Iris Apfel stated, “If your hair is done properly and you’re wearing good shoes, you can get away with anything!”

GET COMFORTABLE Dearest ones, Greta from ShoeBeDoo here, dedicating this edition to comfort. Not the butt-ugly-Iwouldn’t-be-caught-dead-in-it variety. I’m talking modern classics that (blessedly) have a love-love relationship with your feet. The Elevated Essential . . . A super-chic way to offset higher hemlines, loafers are a (soft) step ahead in the style department. Buttery Italian leathers from Stilmoda, funky punched out styles from Mollini and everything in a palette from basic black to silver and baby pink. Loafers modern-up skirts and pants and keep your feet toasty. Is THAT why they are called loaf-ers??? Brogued . . . Borrow a little style from the boys (yes, occasionally they do indeed have it!) and brogue it. Look for patterned brogues care of Rollie Nation and gold hardware at Mollini, both with foot-lovin’ almond toe shapes. I feel a rolled up pant look coming on!

Introducing... Cape of Love

It was just over 5 years ago that Dunsborough resident Diane McGill brought to life her idea to launch a vintage hire business. As an avid collector of all things vintage and with a keen interest in art, music and fashion from the 1920’s through to the 1950’s, it was her daughter’s wedding along with her experience in hospitality, retails and tourism that proved to be the catalyst. Servicing the south west capes from Bunbury to Augusta, Cape of Love specialises in hiring vintage and chic items to personalise locally staged events. Products include tables, chairs and furniture, crockery, arches, signs and chalkboards, vintage linen and glassware with many of the items having been personally up-cycled by Diane herself and, in some cases, even named after members of her family! Hugely popular at weddings, her products are

also regularly hired for use at private parties, corporate events, birthday parties and photoshoots. A recent extension to the business has been the introduction of A Vintage Day Out Tours, offering shopping tours to the Margaret River region or inland to Boyanup, Donnybrook and the surrounding areas. Full or half day tours are available taking in local wineries, gourmet outlets, farm shops and vintage stores in some of the areas’ most picturesque towns. Picnic lunches are served if requested and a vintage or retro dress code is encouraged to add to the fun of the day. All images courtesy of Felicity Ford Photography 21

Local Artisans Nicholas Mattiaccio

Operating out of his custom designed studio in Gale Street, Busselton, local jeweller Nicholas Mattiaccio is a young man who is quickly building up an impressive reputation for his high quality bespoke jewellery. As the owner and operator of Mattiaccio Fine Jewellers, Nicholas prides himself on offering a highly personal one-on-one experience with his customers. With all pieces handmade on site using only the highest quality precious metals and gemstones, his exquisite designs, coupled with his exceptional attention to detail, result in highly original, timeless adornments. In addition to his handmade jewellery, Nicholas also offers a remodeling service designed to transform forgotten unloved pieces into exciting wearable jewellery. Customers are able to re-use existing jewellery as well as purchase gemstones and certified Argyle diamonds. The business also takes care of all repairs from simple solders to complex rebuilds. “I take great pride in remodeling unloved pieces and turning them into stunning works of art. I find a lot of today’s jewellery has a mass produced look and I enjoy creating bespoke pieces set with rare and brightly coloured gemstones and diamonds,” said Nicholas. ‘I have always focused on showing my clients the benefits of a bespoke handmade ring and am continuously working on new designs for the store.” Encouraging his clients to be creative in their thought process, no job is ever too complex for Nicholas. “I have never had a request that couldn’t be fulfilled. When it comes to quality handmade

pieces, I regularly tell my clients that if they can imagine it, I can create it. It really is the most rewarding experience watching a client open a ring box for the first time after I have finished creating their special piece. I also find that when it comes to custom handmade jewellery, no two requests are ever the same.” So what does Nicholas think will be the key trends in jewellery design over the coming years? “I see a growing trend in people requesting jewellery that has a sentimental importance to them to be remodeled. In this modern world of ‘throw-away jewellery’, we take great satisfaction in reinventing an old or unloved piece to suit its wearer and ensuring its importance is not lost.” For further information on designing or re-modelling jewellery with Mattiaccio Fine Jewellers, contact Nicholas on 9751 2609 or visit his studio at 73 Gale Street, Busselton. 22

Design For The Home Transform your home in 2015 Is 2015 the year you finally give your home that much needed facelift? Looking to freshen up your main living areas or bedrooms but don’t know how to get started? Take a look at these ideas for inspiration and get to work transforming your space.

Paint The cheapest way (if you do the labour yourself ) to give your home a makeover is to add a new coat of paint to the walls. Neutrals provide universal appeal as they stylishly brighten up spaces, are inoffensive and are easily compatible with most soft furnishings. The tonal painting of alcoves, behind open shelving, indented walls and stairwells adds extra depth and interest.

home. Eclectic choices of favourite colours and patterns can feel cosy and homely. If you like consistency and for rooms to flow from one to another, then pick just two or three colours that can be layered within varying tones, patterns and textures. Look at colour wheels online to find combinations of colours that work well together. For example, Marsala, the Pantone Colour of 2015, is a rich earthy red that is perfect with teal and aqua tones.

Flooring Consider replacing old tiles with discoloured grouting or patchy outdated carpet with new flooring, or polish up existing floorboards. Try to keep to the same flooring for open plan areas to get that feeling of spaciousness and flow. Vinyl planking is a popular choice currently for the home, offering plenty of design options together with a hard wearing solution for families. For individual rooms, such as bathrooms and bedrooms, be consistent with flooring. Ensure bathrooms share the same tiles and bedrooms the same carpet (children’s rooms may be exempt!).

Lighting Get rid of your old fashioned pendants and replace them with indirect lighting for a more subtle and warmer ambience. Replace overly bright down lights with those that can be adjusted with dimmer switches. Think about where you need sufficient light to read or work

Fabric Overhaul soft furnishings and accessories and rethink the accent colours that works in your

determined by its intended purpose and, of course, the available budget. Think about whether or not seating is required, the proportions of the backyard and if materials need to complement existing themes in the garden or house. Pits can be made from glass, iron, copper, brick or stone and can burn different fuels, such as wood, charcoal, propane gas or gel, with wood and gas being the most popular. The wonderful aroma of a wood-burning fire pit is perfect for that great outdoors camping feel whilst also providing an outdoor cooking option. Propane gas pits provide an unusual bluish flame and, with the supply of fuel easily controllable, can be quite large in size. They create amazing focal points with the use of non-flammable decorative materials in the pit itself, such as coloured glass or pebbles. Whatever design of fire pit is chosen, it is important to make sure that it is set up and used safely. For example, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and contact your local shire to find out about any restrictions that may apply, such as set-backs from boundaries that can impact on the location of your pit. Also ensure the fire pit is set up on a fire-resistant material, such as concrete, gravel or brick. Once all the safety issues are taken care of, just sit back, relax and enjoy the wintery outdoors. Imagine toasting marshmallows as the sun goes down, gathering around the flames with friends over a glass of wine or just enjoying being cosy in front of a crackling fire!

and find a table or floor lamp that not only does the job but also adds a feature to the room. With the cooler months upon us, let in more natural light. Replace old shabby curtains with the fresh clean lines of shutters or venetian blinds in a light neutral colour.

Make use of space Open plan living is all the rage but it can mean that certain parts of the house become unused walk-through areas. Make use of nooks and crannies by putting up shelves or add a door or plasterboard wall to areas of dead space to create a study or children’s playroom. This allows your home to adapt according to its changing needs whilst an extra room can also add value.

Winter Warmth Installing a fire pit

With the colder weather well and truly here, for most homeowners it’s time to abandon the alfresco area to spend evenings inside in the warmth. However, the installation of a fire pit, an emerging trend in outdoor living, is enabling an increasing number of people to extend the use of their backyard through the cooler months. Put simply, a fire pit is a small enclosed area that contains an open fire. Available for purchase directly from the local hardware store, fire pits can also be created from scratch or landscape professionals will custom-design and build a permanent and more expensive feature. Some people even add them into the design of their new home. With plenty of looks to choose from, the design of your fire pit should be mainly 28

Talking Property With Lee York

How quickly a market can change. After a strong summer selling season especially in the premium locations, such as Old Dunsborough, Quindalup and Yallingup Hill, we have now moved from an oversupply of properties being advertised for sale to a position of relative scarcity. Although far from being a bullish buying market, there have been strong sales from spring 2014 through to April 2015, resulting in a drastic reduction in the number of properties being offered for sale in these locations. We have seen astute buyers taking advantage of the low interest rates, good rental returns and well-priced properties. Prior to the GFC, these locations were very tightly held and buyers were often forced to pay premium prices to secure property in these hot spots. It would be our expectation that a return to a seller’s market in these locations is not that far away as buyer demand once again outstrips supply. Despite plenty of media attention regarding the downturn in the mining sector, we have not seen as drastic a slow down as many expected. Our market has instead been a reflection of the rule of supply and demand, which is currently a much more balanced market.

We have seen astute buyers taking advantage of the low interest rates, good rental returns and well-priced properties Significant infrastructure projects, such as upgrades to the Old Dunsborough boat jetty and Quindalup boat ramp parking, the Dunn Bay Road foreshore redevelopment, the improved roundabout at the junction of Caves Road and Cape Naturaliste Road and the new works to Dunsborough Place and Lions Park all continue to improve the facilities and traffic flow especially in peak holiday times. This all bodes well for the future of the region. Lee York is a Director of JHY Realty, Dunsborough, and can be contacted on 0438 867737 or in the office on 9759 1300. property & finance Isn’t it great when a plan comes together! Shouldn’t that happen every time? In my 30 years of experience in the building industry, this is best achieved when there is a committed team involved in the project from conception to completion. Designing a cutting edge, luxury home can take years of planning. In many cases, the client and architect or designer form a close relationship prior to selecting a builder and, once approvals are in place, they then contact 3 or 4 builders inviting them to tender, often with only a week’s notice. There is little consideration for the availability, experience or ability of the builder and its trades to complete the home. In short, they simply want the best price. This is understandable but does it produce the best results? Another way is to select your builder prior to design stage so that the client, designer and builder can all work together to create your dream home in budget, in accordance with a comprehensive building programme and to the highest level of quality. This home was created using that exact same process and the results speak for themselves. Located on Geographe Bay, Dunsborough, the property has been entered into the 2015 HIA South West awards for best Custom Built Home over $1.5m with the results to be announced in September. Built by Tallwood Constructions, our company has been established since 1998 and has been the recipient of 33 national, state and south west HIA awards. Tips on engaging a designer

About to embark on a new building project and looking for a building designer? The following tips may be helpful. TIP Prepare a project brief before meeting a designer. This brief should provide a clear understanding of the scope of the project and therefore advice and recommendations received will be specific to it. The design will also be a response to that brief. The brief should include information about the site, its size, vegetation orientation and available services. Information on the ... cont. pg 38 37

informal opinion of cost and an outline of fees. Digest the information received, select the designer and schedule the next meeting to discuss the project in greater detail. Develop the brief and budgets together, formalise the scope of service, fees and other pre-start items. TIP Ensure all aspects of the project are agreed on prior to work commencing. Once the designer is engaged, the design process will kick into gear. I will discuss this in the next issue. Best of luck finding your designer! building should include the number of rooms and their functions, parking and storage requirements, environmental and landscape considerations and whether a pool is planned. Methodically work through the project and list what is needed. Don’t worry about the budget at this point as it is just a list for discussion. Research the finished projects of prospective designers, get references and use local industry groups. Considerations should include the location of the designer’s office, availability and capacity, fees and services and level of experience. Discuss all of these areas at your first meeting. TIP Ask the designer for a reference from a builder he has worked with. Ask the builder how the designer was to work with. In my experience, builders will be quite frank about the designer’s work! Having narrowed down the list and with the brief in hand, it’s time to meet. Ask for a run down on the services and process first. Then explain your project and ask plenty of questions. TIP At this meeting, ask for an

The story of ArtGeo Cultural Complex begins with the Courthouse and its links to Busselton’s famous jetty and the town’s settlement history. Today the suite of historic buildings on Queen Street house artists and performers rather than prisoners, policemen and magistrates.

From Jetty to Bond Store Just a few minutes’ walk from Geographe Bay’s glorious foreshore, the State heritage-listed Courthouse played an important role in Busselton’s growth as a port and colonial administrative centre. Its earliest limestone buildings date from the 1860. They include a wood-block floored bond store once linked to the jetty by rail. Cargo like beer, wine, tobacco, dried fruit, rice, potatoes and salt travelled from ship to store in horse drawn wagons, to be held until excise duty was paid.

Step Back in Time The Courthouse site includes the original courtroom and a corridor with nine primitive gaol cells, where prisoners were locked up for convictions like

disorderly conduct, drunken behavior, theft or vagrancy. The cells are a stark reminder of a way of life that has passed. One cell with shackles was used for Aboriginal prisoners. It shows how poorly they were once treated.

Art, Craft and Architecture A new courtroom was added in 1897. Still endowed with its original furniture – a jarrah magistrate’s bench, witness stand, dock and public gallery – the brick and exposed wood building is a rare surviving example of colonial arts and crafts architecture. The Courthouse functioned as a police station and lock-up until the 1970s. Today it’s used as a retail outlet for South West arts and crafts. Walk through the historic site and feel the history in its walls, or take a guided tour of the site with one of our dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers to find out hear about characters.

Expand Your Mind Facing the Courthouse across Queen Street, the arched façade of a single storey brick pavilion conceals a contemporary art gallery. Built in the 1930s in a neo-classical style, the building functioned as an office for the Department of Agriculture and Forestry, and a bank. It now houses ArtGeo Gallery and plays host to diverse exhibitions of art and history sourced regionally and Australiawide. See website for latest details.

A Creative Hub The Queen Street cultural precinct is also home to the Stables Studios, Old Post Office Tea Rooms, Acting Up Academy of Performing Arts, Busselton Art Society, the Busselton branch of the Woodturners’ Association of WA, the Weld Repertory Theatre, and the Whaler’s Wife – the first installation from, a series of life-size bronze sculptures known as the Settlement Art Project. Immerse yourself in art, history and architecture – ArtGeo Cultural Complex – there’s nowhere else like it in Western Australia! Top Right: 1897 Courthouse

Chill Out: An Antarctic Odyssey

art & photography

By Brian Gaull

With a long held desire to undertake scientific research in Antarctica, Brian Gaull finally realises his dream when he arrives at Mawson Station in his role as a geophysicist. The memoirs of his time in this exceptionally remote part of the world are laid out with impressive detail in Chill Out and are, quite simply, awe inspiring. In total, Gaull spent sixteen months away from his family, three months longer than originally intended. With underlying problems in his marriage, the reader will often feel incredulous that Gaull made the decision to leave his two young sons for such a large chunk of time, however, as the memoirs progress, it is clear that this dilemma was never resolved in the author’s mind and was a source of constant anxiety. The reader is propelled through the book from one experience to another with eagerness to uncover more scientific revelations, recounts of life versus death situations, descriptions of majestic scenery and insights into the psyche of the men stationed far from home.

Chill Out is raw and honest, and written with an overriding passion. It is a fascinating book of extremes, confronting us with not only extreme location and conditions but also extreme emotions.

BMW 2 Series Convertible

Rear-wheel drive soft top now available

It’s been a little over 12 months since the launch of the 2-Series Coupé, BMW’s direct replacement for the 1 Series Coupé, and quickly following in its slipstream comes the final piece in the range’s jigsaw, the BMW 2 Series Convertible. As the successor to the world’s biggest selling compact luxury convertible (the 1 Series Convertible sold over 130,000 units worldwide), the 2 Series Convertible certainly has a tough act to follow but let’s not forget BMW has been doing this for a while now. The German luxury car manufacturer’s steady stream of stylish compact convertibles stretching back over almost 50 years are widely regarded as some of the most iconic cars ever built. Their heady mix of open top motoring, luxury and performance have long appealed to the discerning car buying public come rain or shine. Larger and sitting closer to the ground than the outgoing 1 Series model, the 2 Series Convertible’s more purposeful and powerful

looking stance adds a striking new dimension to the Bavarian giant’s smallest coupé. And, although it might be the smallest coupé in the range, the extra cabin space provides plenty of extra comfort and extra practicality. Some things don’t change, though. Unlike its main competitor, the front- or all-wheel drive Audi A3, the 2 Series Convertible comes with the traditional BMW rearwheel drive set-up. In other words, as well as looking like a sports car, it’s designed to drive like one. As with the 2 Series Coupé down under, the 2 Series Convertible comes with 3 petrol variants in the range, although there is no room for a diesel option at present. Mercedes-Benz B-Class

Popular premium compact gets facelift

A decade on from the launch of the original B-Class and 3 years after the release of the MK2 version, the 2015 B-Class facelift has arrived to add an exciting new dimension to an already highly competitive compact sports tourer market. The MK2 version of the B-Class was, of course, a significant step in the right direction for Mercedes-Benz. After a somewhat lukewarm response to the original model, the 2012 model sported curvaceous lines, poised looks and delivered much improved performance levels. Wider, lower, longer and sleeker than its predecessor, it took much of its design cues from the luxurious R-Class and featured a vastly improved cabin layout. It was also the first Mercedes-Benz to sit on the all new chassis that had been specifically designed to carry the next generation of new MercedesBenz small cars. In short, it revitalised its premium compact brand. Building on that success, the all-new 2015 facelift model offers added visual impact and plenty of extra features as standard. Its stylish new look features reshaped headlights in line with the current Mercedes-Benz design ethics, an updated front bumper with larger air intakes, revised tail lights with additional LEDs and a reshaped rear bumper elegantly housing the B-class’s exhaust outlets. Inside, the cabin has also had a makeover with all models receiving a larger, 8-inch tablet-style display screen together with updated, luxurious trims. However, it’s the added standard features that really hit the spot. The entry level B180 now includes

satellite navigation and push-button start whereas the B200 models add keyless start, a new improved navigation system, LED headlights, and blind spot assist. The top of the range B250 is now also fitted with the Mercedes’ 4Matic permanent all-wheel-drive system together with an ambient lighting package and anti-theft system.

Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School

Nurturing artistic talents

At Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, students are encouraged to flourish, not just academically but through opportunities that encourage creativity, individual thought, expression and passion for the arts. The outstanding variety of visual and performing arts options encourages students to think outside the box, work independently and to explore and express their emotions through different media. This year, the secondary school drama students brought to life the story of The Jungle Book. For many students, the annual production is their first involvement in acting and performing on stage, allowing them to expand on their classroom drama experience. School productions are a collaborative experience, not just for those who tread the stage but also for those involved with lighting, sound, stage management and music. Each performance is the result of a collective approach to learning. Within the classroom, creative thinking is also encouraged. Recently, Year 8 students have been exploring expression through writing poetry during English classes. Generating original pieces of work through writing and self-reflection, students spent time in class penning their poems then decorated poetry boxes to display in the school’s quadrangle. In Year 10, students also embraced poetry through created Haikus in the form of a 140 character tweet. These ‘poetry tweets’ not only challenged students creatively but gave students a new perspective on an old art form. Music is embraced from kindergarten throughout primary school as part of the curriculum with students able to learn new instruments and skills from specialist teachers. In the secondary school, music can be taken as

an option and is one of the most popular co-curricular activities. With over 300 students participating in some form of musical activity outside the classroom, there are many ways for students to expand their repertoire. Ensembles, choirs and bands develop teamwork and performance skills, while individual lessons focus on mastering technique and form, all of which are shown to full effect when the students perform at the City of Bunbury Western Australian Performing Arts Eisteddfod. Students looking to expand their passion for visual arts can also join the after school Art Club to hone their skills. With an annual whole of school art exhibition, students are further encouraged to paint, sculpt and create works for inclusion that are celebrated with the wider school community. Year 11 and 12 ATAR students are also extended with visits to galleries and tutorials with professional artists. There are many benefits to being involved in the arts at school. Students gain confidence from performing or exhibiting, discover the importance of regular practice and learn how to collaborate and work as a team. With a myriad of opportunities to be involved in the arts, every student at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School is encouraged and nurtured to find their individual talents. Schoolwork and homework? By Louise Clark

When my older sister was getting lots of homework and I was just getting a few maths questions and my usual reading books, I felt like I was missing out so I set about creating my own project to complete. I must have been 8 years old and I decided to research how the coffee my mum drank found its way from the bean to her mug. I loved reading, writing, drawing pictures and making things so it didn’t feel like a chore at all; it was fun. My ‘homemade’ homework also meant something to me because I thought it served a purpose as it would be interesting for people to read. Fun and useful, are these the aspects that are sometimes missing from homework these days? Many parents, teachers and, of course, children disagree with the whole concept of homework. Their argument is that the school day is already packed with enough learning and that time at home should be spent playing and simply being children. Homework activities may appear irrelevant, such as increasingly tricky spelling words to memorise when the child misspells simple high frequency words on a daily basis, or perhaps tasks are overly complicated and require too much parental input. And sometimes, homework can simply take too much time to complete, be too boring and be the cause of conflict between parents and their children. So why have homework? Homework is intended to

reinforce what has been learnt at school. It can also build on what has been learnt so that children can take an idea further or apply it to a new situation. Open-ended tasks can give children the opportunity to extend themselves as they set their own limits. And then there is the most popular of arguments for homework in that it helps to foster self-discipline, time management skills and a sound work ethic. I understand that there is a need for homework that is meaningful. If a child does not understand why a task is useful to them, then interest and motivation are quickly lost. It should be tailored and relevant to how the class and individual children have understood learning objectives or to what is going on currently in the world around them. And homework need not be a daily activity nor should it dominate children’s free-time. At home, children need space and time to unwind and play, and in doing so they are actually discovering, creating, enjoying and learning vital developmental and social skills that homework simply cannot teach them. Louise Clark has studied and taught across all age groups in the British and Australian schooling and college systems.

Meet...

Allira Hanczakowski

In this edition of The Busselton-Dunsborough Life, we hear from Allira Hanczakowski, student, elite athlete, staff member at The Rink and all round amazing young woman with wheels on! It’s fascinating how simple everyday decisions can have such a large impact on your life pathway. I often wonder what I would be doing and what I would be like if my parents hadn’t decided to take my sister and me roller skating at 7 and 5 years old respectively. They simply thought it would be a fun little family outing but now as a 21 year old world class athlete, I think it’s fair to say that it has become so much more than simply a hobby. It’s not just about the training and the physical side of the sport that keeps me going, it’s the entire lifestyle and countless opportunities that keep me wanting more. When I was 13 years old, I watched my big sister compete at her first World Championships and it made me realise that I didn’t want to be in the stands as a spectator. I wanted to be out there on the rink as well. Two years later, as a 15 year old high school student, I competed in my first World Championships in Germany. While I was sharing the rink with people from all over the world, and in the same venue as some of my idols that I had looked up to for so many years, I realised I had been opened up into the world and life of an athlete. It was the most exciting and thrilling experience and I then knew that there was no stopping me. Since then, I have been seeing the world (from Europe to South America and Asia) while doing what I love. I have competed in 5 World Championships and have been ranked as high as 9th place. The decision to continue the sport at such a high level came entirely from within, of course with the endless and amazing support of my family, coach and all those around me. I still had all the same goals as my peers, to finish school with a high ATAR, to get into university and to start studying. I wanted to fit everything in and so I made it happen. I have just

graduated from The University of Western Australia (BA Linguistics and Italian), and will soon commence my postgraduate studies (Master of Translation). Languages are another passion in my life, in particular Italian, so every year for the past 6 years I have been back to Italy for either holiday, study or work. I’m also really interested in fitness outside the rink so I make time to run, go to the gym, do Pilates and yoga. People often ask me how I fit everything in but I follow a really simple concept; I’m only pursuing the things that I actually enjoy and want to do. I can’t stress enough just how much my sport has given to me from many different perspectives. Sure, it has given me friendships and experiences that will always be a part of me but it has given me my ‘spark’. It has taught me about motivation and the real worth of sacrifice and compromise. It has taught me how important dedication is and that practice really does make perfection. It has taught me how to be productive and that you really can make time for all your different interests and passions. I have learned how important it is to have ‘balance’ in your life. Sport is a massive part of my life and makes me who I am but by pursuing my passion I feel like I have got so much more out of it than my 5 year old self could have ever imagined! 58

Winter Health Get out and get fit

There is a strong chance that many of you reading this article will add on a few kilos this winter. Hardly surprising when, with the wind howling outside, the option of a nice warm theatre room, together with a bit of comfort food, is on offer. However, winter is a great season for getting outside and getting fit. The cooler weather makes more strenuous activities possible and much more pleasurable and we don’t have to contend with those strong UV rays either. At the start of a winter’s session, yes, it will be cold and there may be rain but those who have exercised in these conditions get hooked on feeling revitalised and having more energy. Exercising outside not only has the obvious physical benefits but it also has the unique bonus of providing psychological benefits. Enjoying nature, even wild wintery nature, can provide a mood boost as well as being mentally stimulating. It’s a well-known fact that after working out, feelings of tension and anxiety are significantly lower and feelings of self-esteem and enjoyment are much higher. Plus, we all tend to engage more positively with exercise when undertaking it outside rather than inside a gym, and we are more enthusiastic about it. The perfect way to start enjoying winter workouts is to get walking. Find a range of circular routes with varied terrain so that the scenery constantly changes along with the physical demands on your body. As you improve, incorporate jogging and jumping or

climbing over obstacles; you will find muscles you never knew existed. Go cycling with friends or get a scooter and try keeping up with your children. Join an outdoor boot camp and enjoy the motivational benefits of exercising in a group as well as making new friends. Look into outdoor team sports; some may even be free to join. Whatever conditions winter brings with it this year, don’t stay inside to avoid the rain or cold. Think about embracing the great outdoors and its different terrains and venture outside to exercise. Your body as well as your brain will thank you. 60

Epidermal Leveling

immediately and in an afternoon the face can take on a healthy, glowing appearance without the cost or recovery time associated with other more invasive procedures.

A safe alternative to chemical and manual exfoliation

For which conditions is Epidermal Levelling suitable?

Thickened resilient skin Thickened hyper-pigmented skin Dehydrated but not impaired skin Oily and congested skin Blackheads and milia Sun damage Aging Non–reactive rosacea Faces with fine down-like hair that cannot be treated effectively with other procedures It is not recommended for those suffering from active acne and an over production of the sebaceous gland.

By Jeanette Elliott

Epidermal Levelling, also referred to as Dermaplaning or Blading, is an exfoliation procedure designed to assist in the skin’s natural exfoliation process. The procedure smoothes the complexion and eliminates fine lines, leaving the skin immediately smooth, supple and vibrant. This innovative technique carefully removes the outermost layers of dead skin cells, ridding the face of the dead skin and ‘peach fuzz’ that can trap dirt and oils, allowing new skin to appear and brightening the complexion. A safe and effective treatment that improves the texture and tone of the skin, Epidermal Levelling reduces fine lines, facial hairs and improves the absorption of both treatment and at-home-use products. The procedure involves the use of a patented blade that works by removing surface dead skin cells and fine down-like hair on the face, which make it difficult for products to penetrate, thereby aiding the smooth application of makeup. With no pretreatment required, the treatment is ideal for a last minute procedure. Plus, with no chemicals used, it is suitable for all skin types and tones, including darker complexions, with both men and women able to experience a smoother, brighter appearance after treatment. It is also safe for pregnant or nursing patients. Dramatic results can be seen

The Epidermal Levelling Procedure

During the consultation, a skin evaluation will determine if Epidermal Levelling is right for the particular situation with the treatment taking around 45 minutes. To begin with, the face is cleansed and prepared. Next, a state-of-the-art sterile surgical steel blade is meticulously drawn across the face. The blade is held against the skin at a 45 degree angle and stroked along the skin.

Recovery from Epidermal Levelling

The procedure can be carried out in a lunch hour, allowing the patient to get straight back to the day’s activities with no downtime at all. Jeanette Elliott is a dermal clinician who has many years’ experience in helping patients to understand their skin and the conditions that may affect it, providing realistic expectations of the results that can be achieved. She is a member of both the Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians and the Aesthetics Practitioners Advisory Network and is actively involved in the dermal therapy professional community via her role as a student assessor within the The Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science. Beauty Tips

Perfect eyebrows

When applying makeup we are often guilty of bypassing our eyebrows yet they are able to shape and frame the face with dramatic effect. Once brows have had a makeover, the face can not only appear younger but natural beauty can also be enhanced as facial features appear balanced with that added attention drawn to the eyes. Today’s fashion is all about beautifully groomed, full eyebrows, which evoke youthfulness. However, not all of us are blessed with such brows. That’s where makeup products help to shape, fill in gaps and add depth to our eyebrows. But firstly, it is important to find the ideal shape for your brows. Start by making measurements to find the right shape and use a brow pencil to lightly make a mark after each one. The start of your eyebrow should be directly above the inner corner of the eye. Find it by lining the pencil up from the nostril to the inner corner of the eye and following the line of the pencil. Pivot the pencil from the nostril so that it aligns with the outer corner of the eye and where the pencil meets the eyebrow is where the eyebrow should end. The all-important arch of brow is found about two thirds along from the start of the eyebrow. Looking straight into a mirror, this should be right above the outer edge of the eye’s iris. The start and end of the eyebrow should be at the same horizontal level. Now you have your stencil, it is time to add makeup to perfect the brow. Use an eyebrow

brush to gently coax hairs in the right direction and to lift them up for volume. Use short feathery strokes with a brow pencil in order to fill in gaps and to add depth. Getting the colour right for the pencil is essential. Brunettes should generally choose a shade or two lighter than their hair colour. Blondes look natural with a light brown colour – only very fair blondes can suit a golden pencil. Brows for redheads are best dressed in a warm or honey-toned brown. Practice makes perfect but it is advisable to seek help from a professional beauty expert first in order to shape and define your eyebrows into luxurious well-groomed arches. You will receive advice on how to achieve the same look at home. Try to avoid plucking too – this should be left to the professionals! total barre endermologie reformer pilates

Is Your Dog Scared of Thunderstorms?

basic commands, such as sit and stay. Once this is mastered, they then need to be able to retain the training in the face of distractions, such as the approach of a person, another animal, the sound of loud noises or on seeing their favourite toy. It is important that this training occurs outside the storm season when there aren’t any potential triggers in the environment. Desensitising tools, such as playing a recording of a storm, can also help. This can be used in combination with the above training. This should be done at a very low volume at first and slowly increased as the dog becomes tolerant and accepting of the noise. We suggest 10 to 15 minutes at a time, then assess. It is also important not to comfort or punish dogs for their fearful behaviour and to keep calm yourself. To react, reinforces in them that there is something to be anxious

By Dr Paul Repton, GEOvet

Thunder and lightning can provide spectacular light and sound shows and are particularly impressive when viewed on our south west beaches. Whilst most of us tend to grow out of our fear of thunderstorms, for many dogs storms are a terrifying and stressful ordeal throughout their entire life. Dogs will often react to distant thunder and lightning and sense the drop in barometric pressure that can occur well before the storm is in sight. This is why dogs can become fearful and anxious before a storm has arrived. It is also why it is so difficult to manage thunderstorm phobia, as the animal is often well and truly worked up before you get a chance to act. For owners, storm phobias can be difficult and stressful to manage. It is therefore important to manage this fear before it turns into a phobia. Training is the key to management. Dogs need to be well-trained in

animal health about! Animals should be ignored while they are responding to the storm and only rewarded when they display the desired behaviours, such as sitting or lying down and becoming quiet. There are some medications available that can help alleviate fear and anxiety. However, these should not be seen as an easy way out to manage the situation. This is because drugs need to be given well before the storm approaches to allow time for the dog to respond to them. Otherwise, they can be ineffective and actually make the

situation worse. Sedatives and anti-anxiolytic drugs (medication that reduces anxiety) can also have other side effects. Medication should also only be used under veterinary supervision. This can be included in a management plan but should only be used in interim periods until training has progressed and the dog has become desensitised. At GEOvet, we have found Thundershirts, a dog anxiety shirt that applies gentle, constant pressure on a dog’s torso, to be an effective way of providing comfort whilst helping pets weather a storm. Restaurant Review Piari & Co

in pancetta or Shaved Spanish Ham served with pickled shallots and sour dough. With the dining area’s relaxed, intimate atmosphere and close proximity to the open plan kitchen, Piari & Co has created an unpretentious, friendly and fun environment for friends and family to catch up and enjoy impeccably cooked local produce. Our next dish, Seared Scallops and Pork Shoulder served with shavings of Granny Smith apples, walnut crumble and Pedro Ximines vinaigrette, continued to meet the high standards already set. The centrepiece of this fresh tasting and refreshingly light meal was the spectacular interaction between the sweet, succulent scallops and the tender pork shoulder. Again, beautifully presented, the dish offers up an excellent lunchtime option or starter to a main. Highly recommended! Finally, delicious locally sourced produce was once again in evidence with our dessert as we tried a Chocolate and Orange Mousse, featuring chocolate from Margaret River-based Bahen & Co. Served with honeycomb, orange jelly and River Valley sheep yoghurt, this proved to be a suitably indulgent end to a wonderful dining experience.

Husband and wife team Blair and Renee Allen have been creating quite a stir in local food circles since opening Piari & Co just over eighteen months ago in central Dunsborough. Time for The Busselton-Dunsborough Life to discover what all the fuss is about! Modern Australian with a French influence was how the restaurant was described to us on arrival and the French theme was certainly evident with our first dish, Charcuterie (a traditional French word for describing delicatessen meats). Available on either the lunch or evening menu as a small or large serving, this exquisite dish was the perfect way to sample a range of different meats and tantalising flavours. Comprising Duck Breast Prosciutto with an apple and pear compote, Chicken Liver Parfait served with a red wine gel, Pork and Cognac Terrine and celeriac remoulade and Baldivis Rabbit with vegetable pickle and olive powder, the dish not only highlighted the incredible skill of Head Chef Blair Allen but also the outstanding attention to detail and presentation of his food. And, yes, it also tasted fabulous as well with our highlight being the mouth-watering Baldivis Rabbit. Winter Recipe Thai Green Curry Meatballs This is a new take on a classic Thai dish and it works just as well with minced lamb or beef. For a great time-saving idea, make the meatballs in advance and keep them in the fridge overnight or even freeze them and save them for another evening.

Ingredients Serves 4-6 Meatball Mixture: 500g minced chicken ½ cup breadcrumbs ½ cup desiccated coconut salt and pepper to taste oil for frying Sauce: 1½ tbsp Thai green curry paste 1 tbsp fish sauce 1 tsp palm sugar 400ml can coconut milk 1 zucchini, sliced

Method In a large bowl, mix together all the meatball mixture ingredients. Roll the mixture into small balls about 2.5cm in diameter. The mixture should make approximately 25 meatballs. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the meatballs in batches until they are sealed. Do not cook them completely. Remove meatballs from the pan and keep warm. Add the curry paste to the pan and fry for 1 to 2 minutes or until fragrant. Add the fish sauce and palm sugar and mix with the paste. Pour in the coconut milk. Add the zucchini and then add the meatballs. Lower the heat and gently simmer for up to 15 minutes or until the sauce has reduced and the zucchini and meatballs are cooked through. While simmering, carefully spoon the coconut sauce over the meatballs and gently stir from time to time. Serve with rice and top with chopped coriander leaves. Winter Recipe Sweet Potato Falafel Burger Here’s some comfort food that is actually good for you and easy to prepare! These falafel burgers are made with chickpea flour, which contains less calories and more protein than whole wheat flour, and sweet potatoes, which are packed full of vitamin A and fibre. The recipe makes two burgers, double up the ingredients to make more and try experimenting with the spices depending on your taste.

Method Preheat the oven to 190˚C (180˚C fan forced). Bake the sweet potato in a microwave oven until soft. Let it cool down then peel and mash with a fork. Place all the ingredients, apart from the sweet potato, in a large bowl and mix together until combined. If preparing the recipe for young children, the chilli can be left out. Add the mashed sweet potato to the bowl and mix well. Divide the mixture in half, form into two patties and place in the fridge for 15 minutes to firm up. Place the patties on baking paper, spray with oil and bake for approximately 20 minutes. Don’t let them get too brown as the patties will dry out. Serve in a bun with sliced red onion, tomato salsa and fresh coriander leaves.

Ingredients (2 burgers) 250g chickpea flour 1½ tsp ground cumin 1½ tsp ground coriander ½ tsp chilli powder (optional) 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped juice of half a lemon salt and pepper 60ml water 1 medium sized sweet potato

Meet ... Jeff Dewar,

Willow Bridge Estate

The Geographe Wine region continues to punch above its weight, winning a slew of awards in the recent round of wine shows. Owner of one of the largest wineries in the Geographe region, Willow Bridge Estate and based in the Ferguson Valley, Jeff Dewar is a passionate winemaker, who has quickly built up an impressive reputation for his wines both at home and abroad. The BusseltonDunsborough Life recently met up for a chat. What prompted you to make a career out of the wine industry? With two older brothers managing successful merino sheep studs, I decided early on that I didn’t want to be in direct competition with them. I was confident about diversifying yet remaining in the broad perimeter of agriculture. It was the mid-nineties when I was first introduced to the romance of the wine industry. So were a lot of other people both here in Australia and in NZ and I’m very fortunate to be still running a successful business today. What brought you to the Ferguson Valley? Initially, I had in my mind that the region in which I wanted to establish a winery was Margaret River. This resulted in exciting many a real estate agent over a period of months, only to come away unsatisfied and find myself still searching for the perfect property. A family friend then introduced us to the Ferguson Valley, which not only changed my and now my family’s life for ever but has had a hand in introducing this hidden jewel to the world.

When looking for the ideal conditions to grow premium grapes, the Valley provides more than most. Cooling ocean breezes, elevation, rich soils and close proximity to WA’s second largest city. Which of your wines are you most proud of? The Black Dog Shiraz is definitely the wine I’m most proud of. It’s a wine that none of us saw coming. It was a result of a small block of Shiraz, rightly now named The Black Dog, being left to ripen for two to three weeks later than the rest of the block. Our winemaker at the time, Rob Bowen, anticipated high concentrated, rich flavours and the resultant wine was given the name Black Dog. The name originated when our cellar hand at the time described the colour as being ‘as black as the inside of a dog’. Successive vintages and numerous awards later and the wine has become an iconic Willow Bridge wine that I’m immensely proud of. What do you get up to in your spare time? Spare time...well, with 4 young children, most of my spare time is spent being involved with their sport or hobbies. I do enjoy having a game of golf or getting down to Busselton and spending time in the boat, fishing. Travel is something that I enjoy too and with us exporting to over 10 countries, it gives me the chance to visit at least two markets per year.
