SUMMER DAZE The latest fashion trends from The Busselton-Dunsborough Life’s resident fashion expert.

Keeping our cool whilst remaining stylish during our hot Aussie summers can be challenging – but certainly not unachievable.

Bare shoulders

Attention is fully on the shoulder this summer so there is no excuse not to indulge in some blatant skin baring. This versatile trend is incredibly feminine and flattering to wear and there are plenty of pieces featuring either cut outs or completely off the shoulder styles. Plus, with hemlines veering towards mid to long for skirts and dresses, showing off a bare shoulder or two is a less daring way to show off a bit of skin for the more modest among us. For daytime casual, look out for shoulder grazing tops in white cotton or pale blue chambray. Details that take a top to a fresher summer level are delicate pinstripes, a shirred and frilled yoke, or a statement sleeve with a ruffled or tied cuff, cute flare or billowy fullness. Soft silk and lace are perfect for evening off-theshoulder pieces. Colours that work well are blush, black and navy.

Midi dress

Easy to wear and available to suit every kind of body shape, these dresses are essential for surviving soaring summer temperatures. Again, keep with the shoulder theme and wear an off-theshoulder midi in a senorita style or

12 STYLE

go for a playful slip dress. These are beautiful for evenings too, especially with a little lace detailing. Add a metallic accessory to bling up a midi dress, like an iridescent clutch, oversized shoulder brushing earrings or beautiful arm-wear.

Swimwear

When it comes to swimwear, there is a wide variety of onepiece styles to choose from with clever and imaginative cut outs. These designs will not only suit different body shapes but will mean that baring some flesh will be more flattering than covering up completely. They’re also perfect when teamed with a pair of shorts, pants or a midi skirt when moving on from the beach for a casual lunch or drinks. Stripes and monochrome are always in fashion but this summer, there are beautiful tropical prints as well as sporty pieces too. Take time to consider what already suits you rather than opting for swimwear in the most on-trend design or colour. In other words, don’t go for a plunging neckline if there isn’t one hanging in the wardrobe and go for a block colour if prints are not your normal style.

Colouring The Home

N

ot brave enough to step outside the neutral comfort zone? Using colour doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Getting the colour palette right throughout the home can be a difficult and time-consuming project. Committing to the latest in-vogue shades can, in turn, leave a home looking 18 HOME

dated and out of fashion quicker than expected. But playing it safe and resorting to the same neutral tone everywhere can also make rooms feel cold and boring. It’s all about balance and what works for each individual home. Take a look at the following trends for 2017 and

make this summer the season to get colour right. Taking its cue from the fashion runways, yellow, a colour that exudes feelings of optimism and happiness, is set to be the next big thing in interiors. It can be eyepoppingly bright through to pale and buttery so it’s important to know how each shade can be used best. Strong bright yellow walls, for example, will appear garish and dazzling in sunny rooms so either tone the colour down with a pastel or paint the walls in a less showy colour and save the strong shade for accessories. Adding a stylish chair, piece of crockery, clock or 20 HOME

cushions in a vibrant yellow is all that’s needed to bring interior spaces to life. Currently, there is a clear trend influenced by Nordic and Scandinavian interior design ideas with the focus on functionality, excellent craftsmanship and subtle elegance. Muted natural colours are the shades of choice, particularly when paired with saturated dark blues. Walls in stone and soft grey-beige tones are a perfect backdrop for inky blue accents. There will also

be tones of neutrals working together, such as shades of beige or the palest of champagne pink, and this adds a touch of welcome warmth to a home. For more impact, selected walls in deep blue-greens, khaki or dark blue will be ideal for showcasing framed black and white artwork. Or add shots of colour with pieces of furniture and accessories. The year ahead will certainly bring plenty of new colourful opportunities for the home. But if going bold still feels too daunting, try concentrating on painting around two-thirds of the wall space with a neutral shade. Then use a darker or lighter tone of the neutral shade for features, such as an alcove, indented wall or skirting board, and accessorise with bursts of yellow, deep green or blue.

sborne Park-based Mataka Stone is one of Western Australia’s leading suppliers of dry stone wall cladding and natural stone pavers. Supplying Perth and greater WA, the business works primarily with travertine pavers, a highly durable stone that was extremely popular in the heyday of the Roman Empire. Celebrating fifteen years in business this year, Mataka Stone is run by founder Gary Neylan, who stumbled upon stone manufacturing in Malaysia while on a surfing holiday in 2001. The initial inception of the business proved to be anything but conventional as Gary explains. “During my surfing holiday, I decided to look at a map of Malaysia and I caught a bus to some stone quarries. After speaking to the factory owners, I negotiated a price and began importing containers of the local marble into the Sydney auctions. Next, after a chance meeting with an Iranian stone importer, I swapped my attention to concentrating on importing travertine from Iran into my hometown, Perth,” says Gary. “My growing business then led me to Southern China to look at the feasibility of manufacturing stone baths and basins. There, I met a lady who became my interpreter and we travelled to the outer areas of Beijing to buy some wall cladding. However, two days later, she ran away with her boyfriend, leaving me stranded in a hotel. Unfortunately, no-one spoke English in the hotel or the local area so, very quickly, I had to learn how to order food and beer. I also had problems getting the locals to understand me in the town’s launderette, which was not helped by my attempts at explaining myself with various hand movements. I think they thought I was insane! This situation went on for another four days before I was rescued by a guy who spoke no English. He just handed a mobile phone to me with a lady on the other end, who said, in perfect English, that she would meet me there in a couple of hours. I then ended up working with her company for many years!” “These days, things are certainly less complicated with my suppliers as I use a number of respected companies from Italy, Iran, Turkey and China.” Often referred to as travertine limestone or travertine marble, travertine is technically neither. A terrestrial sedimentary rock from Italy, travertine has been used in construction since Ancient Roman times and is responsible for some of the world’s most historical buildings. Both durable and long lasting, it is easy to repair and keep clean and doesn’t absorb heat, making it an ideal choice for outdoor paving, indoor flooring and pool areas. It’s available in a variety of different colours, including white, cream, grey or coral red.

For further information on installing travertine paving, or dry stone wall cladding, contact Mataka Stone on 9726 2873. 24 HOME

The second longest timber jetty in the world and the longest in the southern hemisphere, no visit to the south west is complete without a visit to this worldfamous landmark. Stretching out 1.8 kilometres over Geographe Bay, the heritage–listed structure can be explored either on foot or by riding the small train, which regularly runs the length of the jetty. Ideal for diving, snorkelling and fishing, the jetty has developed into a vast natural aquarium, becoming home to a huge array of fish and colourful tropical corals. The Underwater Observatory positioned at the end of the jetty allows visitors to descend 8 metres to the ocean floor via a spiral staircase where an estimated 300 species of fish can be viewed through 11 separate viewing windows. 28 SPORT & RECREATION

WANT TO BE A CHAMPION A R T I S T I C R O L L E R S K AT E R ? By SUSAN BROOKS

I

f you dream of achieving your full potential and achieving real results in your chosen sport, the sport of roller skating is no different to any other. Like any competitive environment, it will all come down to the little things you do, the small choices you make, the way you move your body and the daily commitments you make. These factors will help shape the big results in the future. The first lesson to take on board is that you need to show up. That’s all of you – both your mind and your body. Today, everyone wants to acquire new skills and wants them now. However, remember that nothing happens overnight. Dedication is required to learn and master skills - without distraction. Dedication must, of course, come from the skaters themselves but we find parents that encourage and show an interest in the practice routines and training greatly help to install the required disciplines in their children. From a coach’s perspective, we encourage our skaters to go through the process of practice so that they learn it for themselves. Self-learning and discovery provide an amazing sense of self-esteem in any skater, and the sport is also a great way of improving physical movement, one-on-one communication and confidence within a group situation. Here are my 5 tips on how to become a successful artistic roller skater:1. Turn up consistently and commit the time. 2. Question whether you have the flexibility, strength, and stability for a particular skill. If not how do you go about developing it? 3. Question whether you have enough understanding to follow through on the stages you are learning. Do you understand how various steps link together or do you need more lessons? If so, seek out a class where someone clearly explains this process. 4. Ensure you are always revisiting the learning process. Physical bodies require repetition so are you practising this often enough for it to flow and become natural? For skaters, this can be done both on and off skates - there is always something new to discover. 5. Finally, do you have a regular measurement process in place or even a coach? If not, look for someone with the ability to take you to the next stage. Putting your trust in a coach is a key step in the process. A coach is a technician who has a different perspective; a coach can see what you can’t. A good coach will become a friend, who will stand by your side, cheering you on and celebrating successes. They will also break down weaknesses and point out where you need to improve. While they can’t do it for you, they will provide all the required knowledge while pointing you in the right direction. They will be someone who cares deeply about you and your wellbeing, highly skilled with the tools to help guide you at the moment you most need it. The right coach should also be someone who is highly qualified with strong accreditations, a strong track record and respect for others. At the Rink, we have 35 hours a week of artistic skating plus off skate fitness classes in Yoga, Pilates, TRX and Trigger Point, and Learn to Skate Classes. Whether your goal is to become a champion skater or just a better version of yourself, we welcome you. Susan Brooks is Head Coach and the owner of The Rink, Bunbury, located at Gibbons Road, Davenport. For further information on current programmes, call 9725 6999 or visit www.therink.com.au

Lexus NX200t F Sport

F

ollowing in the footsteps of its larger SUV sibling, the RX, this decidedly stylish compact crossover from Lexus was a relatively late entrant to the small, luxury SUV sector. However, since its launch at the Beijing International Motor Show in 2014, the NX has certainly been making up for lost time. Offering two-wheel-drive and all-wheel drive options, buyers can choose between the refined 2494cc petrol hybrid version, the NX300h, or the sporty NX200t, propelled by its outstanding 1998cc petrol engine with 6-speed automatic transmission. Both come in Luxury, F Sport or Sports Luxury trims and both provide an undoubtable visual feast for the eye. According to Lexus, this was a car that, rather than taking its design cues from other similar vehicles, sought out inspiration from trend setting fashion labels, watches and even running shoes. The result is a stunning eyecatching design melded with the very latest auto technology. It’s bold and unashamedly unique. Given the opportunity to take the AWD NX200t F Sport out for an extended test, it was the versatility, performance and driver-focused technology that really hit home to us. Developed especially for the NX, the punchy turbo-charged petrol option in the NX200t delivers 175kW at 4800-5600rpm and 350Nm of torque between 1650 and 4000rpm. All of this available power

32 MOTORING

on tap meant the vehicle was nimble and responsive in city traffic but also poised and effortlessly-smooth over longer journeys. Through its combination of impressive performance and precise handling on the roads, it

“... bold and unashamedly unique ... was sometimes easy to forget that the NX was actually an SUV and not a high performance sedan. One thing that can always be counted on with Lexus is the huge amount of standard equipment on offer. Much of what is seen as added extras when it comes to its predominantly German competitors is available as part of the package in even the entry level 2WD NX200t. Our F Sport model included adjustable sports suspension, ventilated front seats, a more advanced 360-degree camera system instead of the regular reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, smart key entry and start, heated front seats, sat-nav and powered tailgate. The F Sport also came with a raft of interior features and finishes, including 18-inch alloy wheels, a special front bumper and grille package, F Sport steering wheel, gear lever, pedals and scuff plates and 10-speaker audio system. Buyers, and typically for the NX that means young families and executive couples, will be reassured by the

seemingly endless list of safety features available. The body structure of the NX has, in the event of an accident, been designed to absorb shock and disperse energy away from the cabin while a total of eight strategically placed airbags are armed to deploy immediately. Our F Sport model also included Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert System, alerting drivers to unseen vehicles in adjacent lanes by illuminating a warning light on the exterior wing mirror. With a larger cabin that most of its rivals, the NX200t F Sport offers a combination of unbridled comfort, contemporary styling and typical Lexus luxury. Its new turbo-powered engine has also added an extra release of power right through the rev range. After a week in our possession, this was one car that was definitely hard to hand back! Priced from $61,864.90 drive away (NX200t AWD F Sport from $74,180 drive away). For further information on the Lexus NX range, contact Lexus of Perth on 9340 9000 or visit the showroom at 359 Scarborough Beach Road, Osborne Park. MOTORING 33

Jaguar F-Pace

A

marque synonymous with some of the most ground-breaking designs in modern motoring, Jaguar is renowned for challenging convention and playing by its own rules. The E-Type, the XJ6 and the XJS, the list goes on. Truly unique cars, mixing intoxicating performance, inimitable design and matchless elegance. So, having been the inspiration behind much of what we see on the roads today, it has always been somewhat surprising to note its absence from the burgeoning luxury SUV market. Even Porsche, with the Cayenne, was prepared to risk upsetting its mainly traditional buyers by venturing into SUV territory - and that was ten years ago.

“... very much a Jaguar at heart ...” Well, all good things come to those who wait and with the arrival of the F-Pace, Jaguar’s first ever SUV, the term fashionably-late has never rung so true. This is a huge departure for a brand that has built its reputation on producing a never-ending line-up of memorable sedans and coupés but it is a masterstroke. Just like the Cayenne and Macan have done for Porsche, the F-Pace is set to introduce a whole new market of buyers to the cat-inspired brand, so much so, in fact, that Jaguar is expecting the F-Pace to become its most popular model. And let’s not forget; although this might be Jaguar’s first foray into the market, sister brand Land Rover also happens to know a thing or two about building luxury SUVs. Yes, it’s an SUV but this is very much a Jaguar at heart. Styled by renowned car designer Ian Callum, the F-Pace’s front grille is unmistakably Jaguar and although over 80 per cent of the car’s parts are new, the 34 MOTORING

chassis and mechanical bedrock of the car are based on the recently launched XF and XE sedans. Most importantly, it has the looks and presence of a Jaguar with its stylish features and luxurious touches that include both 19-inch alloys and bi-function Xenon headlights as standard. The luxury flows through into the cabin with leather seats, climate control, electric front seats, Meridien sound-system and an eight-inch colour touchscreen also standard across all models. Available in Prestige, Portfolio, R-Sport, S or First Edition trim levels, the F-Pace is offered with three engine options all with 8-speed automatic transmission.

Kicking off the selection, and available on Prestige and R-Sport trims only, is a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine, delivering 132kW of power and 430Nm of torque. Cruising from 0-100km/h in 8.7 seconds, it achieves an impressive top speed of 208km/h. The second diesel in the range is a 3.0L V6 turbo-charged power-plant, delivering 221kW of power and 700Nm of torque. This powerful diesel surges from 0-100km/h in a healthy 6.2 seconds before reaching a top speed of 241km/h. Finally, the 3.0L V6 supercharged petrol engine will definitely get the pulses racing. Producing 250kW of power and 450Nm of torque, drivers will

be propelled to 100km/h from a standing start in just 5.8 seconds while the brave will enjoy a top speed of 250km/h. t Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, Kindergarten to Year 12 students don’t just benefit from an outstanding academic education; they also get the opportunity to thrive in an environment that cares for their wellbeing and focuses on educating every aspect of the child. By getting to know students as individuals, by building their self-esteem and by making them feel happy and safe at school, Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School encourages students to maximise their involvement and to achieve their potential. As a Positive Education School, it teaches students to explore and build character and resilience through a range of programmes across both Primary and Secondary. Its cross-age home groups and house system enable students to get to know their peers and other students from various year levels through regular activities. Students benefit from having good relationships with teachers and staff that they feel comfortable talking to, whether it’s their home group teacher, head of house, VET coordinator or senior mentor. It might even be last year’s coach, who is also very likely to be a staff member. The school is well resourced to identify and support students in times of need with access to the school nurse, counsellor or chaplain. In short, there is always someone available to listen to concerns or to give advice. 36 EDUCATION

As the first Anglican co-educational boarding school in Western Australia, the school continues to be informed by the Christian faith of the founders more than forty years after the school’s establishment. At the heart of the school lies the chapel, a beautiful rammed-earth structure, which welcomes students on a weekly basis to worship and reflect. The aim of the school is to nurture students not just academically but also spiritually. Religious Education classes encourage students to ask and seek answers to the bigger questions of life and to discuss philosophy and faith. These discussions are carried out in an open and honest way. Through careful and respectful conversation students are encouraged to think philosophically about their lives and develop strong personal values. Although an Anglican school, students also learn about the many faiths of the world and how each celebrates its different beliefs. The focus is on producing young men and women who have a considered and compassionate outlook towards others and the world.

Single Storey Coolbinia Stunner By Giorgi Architects and Builders

his high quality contemporary home in Perth’s northern suburbs is the result of a clear vision from the owners of the property combined with the design and building expertise of Giorgi Architects and Builders. Determined to build a single storey residence on a tricky sloping block, the owners approached Giorgi Architects and Builders having been impressed by the company’s whole-of-home approach. Undeterred by the

brief and challenge of the block, Sales and Marketing Manager Danny Giorgi saw it as an exciting challenge for his team of in-house architects. “Our clients gave us a list of preferred options and were understandably a little bit nervous whilst being fairly particular,” says Giorgi. “However, once they saw

our first proposal they could see their dream beginning to materialise.” The end result is a cleverly designed home with substantial street appeal, incorporating innovative design and single storey practicalities. Featuring an under-croft garage, storeroom, gym and powder room, the remainder of the home sits above on one level to fully exploit the size of the block. A 2.4m high-entry pivot door opens to polished ceramic floors and a light-filled lobby, incorporating lift access from the garage, courtesy of floor to ceiling windows. To the right of the lobby, a private wing includes a study, the master bedroom and ensuite. Beyond the entrance to the home, a large open plan kitchen and dining and lounge areas end on a central

courtyard. Giorgi’s own stylish cabinetry designs in white and timber veneer are featured throughout these spaces. At the heart of the home, glass, stackable bi-fold doors open out onto an alfresco with barbecue. This seamless and large entertaining area overlooks the infinity edge swimming pool. Towards the rear, a family room opens onto a decked terrace surrounding the pool with two further bedrooms, a bathroom and a laundry completing the internal living. “Our clients wanted the best of design and construction to work jointly towards their preferences. We have not conceded on anything and nothing is standard in this home,” says Giorgi.

ARTGEO C U LT U R A L C O M P L E X W H E R E A R T A N D H E R I TA G E M E E T THE COMPLEX OF BUILDINGS now known as ArtGeo once played a vital role in Busselton’s history and growth as a port. Today, it’s a creative hub for the visual and performing arts, featuring ArtGeo Gallery, the Courthouse and Old Post Office Tea Rooms, Stables Studios, Acting-Up Academy of Performing Arts, Weld Repertory Theatre, Busselton Art Society, Busselton Woodturners and a series of life-size bronze sculptures commemorating the town’s settlement in 1834. Step back in time

According to the Australian Heritage Commission, the old Courthouse has considerable significance for its contribution to the social and economic history of Busselton. With its earliest structures dating from 1860–61, the judicial site contains some of the

48 THE ARTS

oldest buildings in Busselton. For these reasons, the Courthouse was classified by the National Trust in 1972, assessed for the National Estate in 1983 and listed on the State Heritage Register in 1993. The early buildings include a Bond Store, courtroom and nine gaol cells where prisoners were detained for misdemeanours, like being drunk and disorderly, petty theft or vagrancy. One cell with bars and shackles is a

stark reminder of how Aboriginal people were treated in the past. At one time, a tram-line linked the Bond Store with Busselton Jetty so that imported goods, like tobacco, beer, wine, salt, rice and canvas, could be dispatched from ship to store in horse-drawn wagons. Nowadays, the Bond Store is used as a retail outlet for South West arts and crafts. In 1897, a new courtroom was constructed. The brick and timber building designed by WA’s principle architect George TemplePoole is a rare surviving example of Federation arts and crafts architecture. It’s still furnished with the original magistrate’s bench, clerk’s desk, witness stand, dock and public gallery made from Jarrah felled and milled locally.

Expand your mind

Across from the Courthouse, a stylish pavilion now known as ArtGeo Gallery hosts contemporary art exhibitions sourced regionally and Australia-wide. Built in 1931 for the Agricultural Bank, this fine example of inter-war neo-classical architecture was listed on the State Heritage Register in 1999 and classified by the National Trust in 2001. In buildings where bankers, magistrates, postmasters and police constables once presided,

now you’ll find artists and performers but a tour of the complex with one of our guides soon brings history back to life. THE ARTS 49

A Customary Dilemma Michael Allwood

Debut novel for Dunsborough A u t h o r n o w ava i l a b l e

D

unsborough author Michael Allwood has recently published his debut novel. A Customary Dilemma is a gripping thriller that provides a fascinating insight into the world and work of the UK’s Customs Drug Intelligence Unit. Michael Costello, a young British linguist fluent in Italian and Spanish, joins the Customs Intelligence Unit in London where he specialises in tracking the movement of drugs from Colombia via Mexico to Europe. Shortly after taking up his new position, Michael is involved in a murder investigation that takes him away from his family and home, immersing him in the shady underground world of drug cartels. “The book is clearly not autobiographical but I have drawn on my experiences in the international shipping of containers and port businesses. I have from time to time been aware of drug movements and met some of the agents and others involved. Hence, the book is based to some extent on fact. Having discussed the outline of the book with various contacts, several people have said it would make a good thriller. Let’s hope they are right!” says Allwood. A Customary Dilemma, published by Austin Macauley, is now available from Amazon and at all good bookshops. For more information, go online at www.austinmacauley.com THE ARTS 51

I

t’s a well-known fact that almost everyone at some stage in their life has started a fitness programme or joined a gym only to either quit later on or not make use of the membership once the initial enthusiasm has worn off. Why can’t we keep ourselves motivated? There are many things that can distract us and serve as a reason or excuse to skip our workouts. Being time poor, busy at work, having sick children, being sick ourselves, social events – the list goes on. Sometimes, we would just rather sit back on the couch and watch TV. It’s so much easier, isn’t it? So how can we push ourselves to stay motivated with our training? Here are a few pointers that might help motivation levels stay high.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH LIKE MINDED PEOPLE

Good training partners are invaluable. Surround yourself with motivated, inspiring and enthusiastic people and you will find that it is contagious! Find someone who has similar goals to you and can train at the same daily time or train within a like-minded group. No matter how bad a day you might be having, with the right group of people, it’s nearly impossible to not give 100% every time you set foot inside the gym.

FOCUS ON YOUR GOALS Be specific. As the saying goes; if you fail to plan you plan to fail. Whether your goal is to lose 5kg, run a kilometre or to lift your own bodyweight, all of this means nothing unless you have a plan and are getting up each day committing the time to achieving these goals. Use a personal trainer or join a gym that has a big emphasis on performance based goals. For women, the goal might be to do proper push-ups or bodyweight pull-ups, for the guys, it may be to bench press 100kg plus. Aim high, work hard and it will only be a matter of time until you are kicking goals. TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT!

If you’ve been doing the same workout routine for months and seeing little results, then it’s no wonder motivation is waning. For changes in physique, fitness and strength we need to

52 HEALTH & BEAUTY

constantly be challenging ourselves in new ways. This means getting comfortable about being uncomfortable when training. Doing what’s easy will rarely produce amazing results nor does it offer the same feeling of achievement we get from doing something that tests us! Switch your 5km jog for picking up some kettlebells. Trade out your pump class and start proper strengthbased barbell training. Put the excuses aside, step out of your comfort zone, surround yourself with like-minded people and make exercise a life changing habit.

The Effects of Sunlight

By Jeanette Elliott

R

esearch has shown that a minimum amount of sunlight exposure is required for us to function properly. Like a plant needs sunlight to grow and thrive, the human body needs sunlight for correct cellular functioning. It’s a well-known fact that excessive sunlight exposure can cause ageing and skin cancers, however, there is now clear scientific evidence that shows daily sunlight exposure is actually good for human health. The information below highlights both the dangers of excessive sun exposure along with benefits achieved from moderate exposure. Some are widely known and others are not. Written from the perspective of a skin health professional, I have tried to explain how we might give advice to patients about the sun, its dangers, the correct protection from it and, indeed, its benefits.

T h e Va l u e O f S u n l i g h t

The current hot topic (particularly in Australia) of exposure to ultra violet radiation, i.e. sunlight, will often lead people to think only of its downsides; skin cancer, cataracts, ageing, wrinkles. However, science is now saying that wearing sunglasses may severely weaken the body’s defences. There are strong indications that sunlight through the eyes stimulates the immune system. There is no question that UV light in large amounts is harmful but in trace amounts, as in natural sunlight, it acts as a beneficial life-supporting nutrient. While too much sunlight can be harmful to the skin, the right balance can also have mood lifting benefits by increasing the brain’s release of the hormone Serotonin. This mood-boosting hormone also promotes feelings of calm. Low levels can also create a higher risk of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression triggered by changing seasons. Sunlight benefits sufferers of nonseasonal depression, anxiety and premenstrual tension, according to the Journal of Psychiatry and Neuroscience. Sunlight exposure also has a further health benefit. UVB radiation in sunlight causes a person’s skin to create vitamin D for bone health whereas low levels of sunlight are linked to bone-wasting diseases, such as osteoporosis. We have discussed the dangers of skin cancer for over-

exposure but moderate amounts of sunlight actually have cancer preventive benefits. According to an interesting study by Environmental Health Perspectives, areas with less daylight are more likely to have more people with a number of cancers than those who live with more sunlight hours.

S u n l i g h t a n d M o d e r at i o n

On record as saying sunlight can treat several skin conditions, including psoriasis, eczema and acne, The World Health Organisation recommends getting five to fifteen minutes of sunlight two to three times a week. This should be between 10am and 4pm when the sun’s rays are more direct, and on the arms, hands and face only. For vitamin D-boosting benefits, the sun must penetrate the skin and, therefore, sunscreen or protective clothing should not be worn. However, if spending longer in the sun than a brief 15-minute period, the skin should always be protected! Apply a strong sunblock and wear a protective hat, shirt and sunglasses. A little bit of extra sunshine can have wide-ranging benefits for everyone. Just don’t overdo it. HOW TO ENGAGE I N T H E D I G I TA L A G E

T

BY GET YOUR APP

he south west region is buzzing during the peak summer season boom. So how do we leverage off this boom and increase the effects of the boom while it is here?

The answer is effective engagement At Get Your App, we are big believers in all things digital, from websites and apps to social media posts and pages. We create and develop digital products to support and work with each other. One is not better than the other, instead, each serves its own purpose and is enhanced when partnered with another. Engagement starts with digital visibility How are businesses found and how do they capture their audience once they are found? Google Analytics plays a huge role here. A company’s website needs to be responsive in this multiscreen world. Google likes

that. Everybody likes that. We now live in an age where users of devices have a short attention span when it comes to loading times and responsive designs. If a user has to wait or pinch and zoom whilst searching the web on a hand-held device, the engagement has dropped. Today, companies need to have a linked online presence. Engaging via one digital product is simply not enough. Google likes seeing supportive online presence. Everyone wants to connect via multiple platforms. Having a website and app, or website and social media page, or social media page and app connected, the higher the digital visibility and engagement. People want to connect on Facebook, understand more through a website, stay engaged with call to actions via an app and keep up to date with companies and the world through social media posts. So, to increase the boom, get visible by being on more than one digital product and be responsive to current digital products. Staying engaged is how the boom can be leveraged. Let the buzz of summer live on! Let’s also briefly touch on active engagement and passive engagement. Emails, newsletters, blogs, social media posts, these are all examples of great engagement tools. These, however, are often time consuming and, therefore, fall into the category of active engagement. For example, to see a post on Facebook, it will need to be found by someone scrolling through the newsfeed. We recommend enhancing engagement through a passive approach. In other words, the message gets to its audience without them having to search for it. An example would be having an app that sends out a push notification directly to its target audience. Leverage off the boom of getting connected and stay directly connected and engaging.

To discuss how to stay engaged and how to offer practical solutions across a variety of digital products, contact Get Your App. Servicing Bunbury to Perth and the greater south west, for more information, visit www.GetYourApp.com.au or call 1800 487 277. 54 BUSINESS

M

ake sure you apply as soon as possible for your Australian Parent Visa because they are under review - a euphemism for ‘about to go through a radical change.’ A recent Productivity Commission report identified that each Parent Visa granted costs Australia between $350,000 and $420,000. This report was quickly followed by an announcement from the Government that it was conducting a review of these visas to find out what exactly the Australian people wanted. This included a suggestion that a temporary five year visa for parents of Australians might be introduced. However, what I didn’t hear the Assistant Minister for Immigration mention was that the Temporary Parent Visa comes with the suggestion that the Australian sibling would be responsible for their parents’ medical costs while on this temporary five year visa. So what happens at the end of this five year period? Are residents supposed to pack their parents back off home with their medication to a country they have not lived in for 5 years, where they may have no contacts and may not be eligible for medical or social benefits once they return? We expect the review will recommend a massive increase in the costs of Parent Visas and some options

58 MIGRATION MATTERS

will disappear entirely. So be sensible. Act now while the cost and conditions of this visa are still reasonable. We expect the change to happen in the first half of 2017. Currently, six different types of Parent Visas can be accessed by parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents where 50 per cent or more of their children reside in Australia. Current costs of a Contributory Parent Visa are $43,600 per person and from the figures released this would seem to be the bargain of the century. It is important to make the correct choice of visa as getting it wrong at this stage would be disastrous. Restaurant Review

Al Forno The Café HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM Hans and Dagmar van Diest are clearly onto a good thing with their Al Forno restaurant brand. Having opened Al Forno Dine In and Takeaway for evening dining to rave reviews just over three years ago, their latest eatery, Al Forno The Café, has recently opened its doors on Queen Street to equal acclaim. The Busselton-Dunsborough Life wasted no time in giving it a try. Open for breakfast and lunch, with its stylish décor, polished jarrah floorboards and open kitchen, Al Forno The Café exudes a warm and welcoming atmosphere to diners. There’s a mix of table and bench-style seating for those eating in but there is also a bustling takeaway trade giving the restaurant a busy feel throughout the day. Much like its sister restaurant, the menu focuses on European-influenced cuisine, using fresh locally-sourced produce. Head Chef Hans’s passion for traditional presentation, honest flavours and classic cooking techniques once more shines through and the selection of dishes for my lunchtime visit included dishes pulling influences from right across

the European continent. It was going to be a difficult choice! A tough decision but in the end the restaurant’s unique take on the classic Spanish dish of Paella, Paella Risotto, got the nod. Paella is, of course, traditionally cooked with specially grown short grain rice, however, this dish used risotto rice infused with chicken stock, which gave it a deliciously creamy texture. Served with chicken, chorizo and an array of local seafood, including mussels, baby squid and prawns, the dish was further enhanced with its selection of herbs, spices and vegetables, including saffron, smoked paprika, capsicum and shallots. It was no surprise to hear that this dish is one of the most popular dishes on the menu; it was simply wonderful. Don’t forget, this new addition to the Busselton eating out scene is also open for breakfast so there are even more European-influenced delights to enjoy. In addition to its fabulous coffee and cake options, an extensive takeaway menu is available throughout the day, perfect for those who fancy tucking into some high quality, flavour-filled food without having to go to the bother of cooking. There’s also a selection of vegetarian and gluten-free choices too. Offering up a fabulous range of freshly prepared, home-cooked dishes, Al Forno The Café prides itself in offering genuine old-fashioned hospitality with friendly and attentive service. Fans of the original Bussell Highway-based Al Forno restaurant will be in seventh heaven there’s now an Al Forno restaurant open all day, every day! Words by Mark Boden

My Favourite Dish Quinoa Risotto By Michele Melloni, Chef, Shaana Café THIS DELICIOUS HEALTHY DISH is a unique combination of our passion for Italian-style cuisine and locally-sourced Western Australian ingredients. Introduced to our menu in spring, it’s a dish that we almost stumbled upon while experimenting with different ideas for our new menu. We had some zucchini left over in the kitchen, made a purée and then added it to some quinoa. From there, the idea for the dish was born. The zucchini is cooked with garlic and oil and seasoned with salt and pepper. We then make the purée, cook it with the quinoa and serve the dish with locally-sourced, marinated garlic prawns on top. Quinoa, of course, has long been known for its health benefits and is packed with nutrients. It’s distinctive nutty taste and texture make it an ideal replacement for rice in dishes, particularly risotto rice. This beautifully balanced dish allows for the flavours of all of the ingredients to stand out and be enjoyed. The simplicity of the risotto is its strength, much like many of the best Italianinfluenced dishes. Priced at $22, it’s available daily from 12pm and is both vegan friendly and gluten-free. The above dish is available at Shaana Café, Unit 2, 6 Dawson Drive, Yallingup. Open 6 days 7am to 3pm (kiosk only Wednesday).

Method Heat the oil and gently fry the onion, garlic and chilli until softened. Stir in rice to coat with the oil. Pour in the stock along with the lemon juice and tomatoes. Taste and season with salt and pepper, if required. Bring to the boil then cover and reduce the heat. Simmer for around 20 minutes or until the rice is al dente. Stir in the parsley and spoon the rice mixture into a large dish. Place in the fridge for the mixture to chill and firm. When cold and firm, divide the mixture into 10-12 balls. Press small chunks of the feta cheese into each ball. Dip the rissole balls, one at a time, into the egg and then into the breadcrumbs to be coated evenly. Place all the rissoles onto a tray and chill again in the fridge for 30 minutes. Pour enough oil into a pan to generously cover the bottom. Fry just a few rissoles at a time, gently turning, over a medium heat until the breadcrumbs are a deep golden colour. Place the rissoles on kitchen paper to drain excess oil. Serve with a green salad and slices of lemon.

SUMMER LEMON CHILL Take a bottle of this homemade lemon drink along to the picnic – it’s a perfect accompaniment to the spicy rissoles. Serves 4

Ingredients juice of 4 lemons (can be substituted with limes) 4 cups water ½ cup caster sugar 1 lemon or lime for serving, sliced

Method Heat 1 cup of water and all the sugar in a saucepan until it is simmering. Stir constantly until the sugar is dissolved. Pour the syrup mixture into a large pitcher and stir in the lemon juice. Stir in the rest of the water. Chill in the fridge until cold. Serve with ice and slices of lemon or lime.

A delicious selection of breads, rolls, pies and sweets All day breakfast | lunch | serious coffee cakes and treats | dine in | take away Open from 7.30am Monday to Saturday

Wine Regions of WA

The geographe

The Alternative Road north By Anne Mazza

hile motoring north on that wellworn highway between Busselton and Perth many travellers will be unaware of the fact that they will be driving through the largest and most diverse wine region in Australia; the Geographe. Curving north along the coast of Geographe Bay from Busselton to Harvey, and extending inland over the Darling Range to Collie and Donnybrook, the Geographe wine region is home to about 40 vineyards. Most of these are small boutique businesses and many have picturesque cellar doors set amongst beautiful rolling valleys and majestic jarrah forests. Touring the Geographe offers a very personal wine discovery experience because almost every winery in the region is family-run. This means that when visiting the cellar door, very often the person behind the counter will be the same person who prunes the vines, picks the grapes and produces the wines. Being such a large region, the Geographe has a large variation in soil types and micro climates, which translates to ideal growing conditions for many grape varieties. Generally, the area is best known for the traditional French varieties of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. However, The Mediterranean climate also makes the area perfect for growing less well known varieties from Spain, Portugal and Italy. There are over 1600 varieties of wine grapes in Australia and the Geographe has many small producers who are experimenting and pioneering the production of alternative varieties. The emerging popularity of these ‘new’ wines

encouraged the Geographe Wine Industry Association to hold the first Alternative Varieties Wine Show in Western Australia in September with renowned wine writer Jane Faulkner as Chief Judge. The show was a great success with entries from around the state and a number of gold medals were won by local producers. Tempranillo was the strongest alternative variety class with gold awarded to Willow Bridge Estate, Mazza Wines, St Aidan Wines, Bakkheia, Green Door Winery and Harvey River Estate. Other alternative wine producers to win medals included Smallwater Estate for Zinfandel, Ferguson Falls Estate for its Tempranillo blend and Mandalay Estate for its Durif. The largest winery in the Geographe wine region, Willow Bridge Estate is a family owned business operated by principals Jeff and Vicki Dewar, who bought the picturesque 180-hectare hillside property in 1996. Situated high on the western watershed of the Ferguson River, the vineyard has spectacular views over the coastal plains. The environment, climate and soil types set the area apart from the more traditional wine growing regions of the state and provide an environmental combination never previously utilised for the production of premium wines. With a vision to produce premium, quality varietal wines for both the domestic and international markets, the estate has already produced an impressive array

of outstanding wines in less than a decade, the most notable being the classic Black Dog Shiraz. In addition to that, at the recently held Geographe Wine Show, the winery swept the board picking up numerous awards together with six gold and three silver medals. The awards included Wine of the Show and Best Red Wine for its 2015 Gravel Pit Shiraz, Best Rosé for its 2016 Rosa De Solana together with Trophies for Most Successful Producer and Excellence in Winemaking.

Whicher Ridge Wines

For those looking for an inspiring and unique wine tasting experience while encountering vibrant colours, aromas and tastes then the Whicher Ridge Wine Sensory Garden is a must visit destination. This garden is the only one of its kind privately owned in Australia and has featured in Gourmet Traveller Wine, Australian Country and is soon to be featured in Country Style. Engaging the five senses of sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste, plantings are themed to each wine variety. The garden is planted alongside the cellar door and a wine tasting with Cathy, the winemaker, can be done either before or after visiting the garden. Whicher Ridge is located close to Busselton and is a small artisan, family owned winery. The vineyard, winery, cellar door and wine sensory garden have been developed over the past 13 years by owners Cathy and Neil Howard. Visitors to Whicher Ridge are welcome to bring a picnic and to relax under the many shady trees in the winery’s large native garden or in the sensory garden. Wine can be purchased by the glass from the cellar door and picnic baskets with cutlery, glasses and plates are available to use. Organically grown vegetables, seedlings, and herb collections themed to each of the wines made, are available for sale during summer. 68 FOOD & WINE

The winery also has a new attraction for visitors with the game of Pétanque played on gravelled areas close to the winery. There are sets of Pètanque balls on hand for visitors to borrow and Neil or Cathy will be only too happy to run through the rules and give a quick playing lesson. Located at 200 Chapman Hill East Road, Chapman Hill, Whicher Ridge Wines is open from Thursday to Monday, 10am to 5pm.
