can be tucked in. Definitely wear heels or, if your legs are long enough, wear heeled ankle boots, which will help to make the outfit look more edgy. As for the ankle boots themselves, they too feature the autumnal metallic glitz. Many boots have studs, buckles, zips or heel adornments, mostly in gold. Add more metal with a statement necklace and wear it as a collar to your sweater or over a buttoned up shirt. Don’t save your bling for the evening! It’s also exciting to see a wave of navy coming into the stores, giving us a lighter feel than the usual black. Neutrals are based around grey, from light through to darker shades. These basic colour palettes can easily be teamed with the on-trend, bright prints of the season.
New season designs
The change of season is the perfect excuse to add new items to a wardrobe. Autumn is hardly cold but there is certainly a need at times to layer up and to find new pieces to get through the fresher days and nights. One of the hottest prints this season is check. Following a strong showing in Europe, it is now emerging on the rails here offering plenty of versatility across a range of styles. Wear it as a blouse tucked into a skirt or narrow pants, or as an unbuttoned, classic plaid shirt worn loosely or even around the waist. It can also be worn as an oversized coat or as a huge Charlie Brown scarf. Feminine, casual, grungy or dressy, at Essence check will be a real winner this season. Leopard is the animal print to be seen in this autumn, looking stunning on loafers, heels, clutches, scarves, sunglasses and all sorts of accessories. Look out for a leopard print sweater too and pair it with narrow pants or a pencil skirt. Sweaters of every texture are going to be a main staple for this season and the next too. Many will be to the waist or cropped, and the latter are perfect for layering. Embellishments will be very popular this autumn, in the form of sequins and metallic thread, and jewelled or studded shoulders. Expect to also see plenty of printed sweaters in animal, floral and check designs. Popular skirts for autumn are set to be the midi. Reminiscent of a tea party skirt with it worn just below the knee and high waisted, midi skirts make midriffs appear slimmer and legs longer. Look for a full skirt to give a fluid feel. To balance out the quantity of fabric covering up your lower half, go for a cropped sweater or a form fitting top that 8

Design For The Home
are some ideas and expected trends this year. Colour is the most obvious way to transform a room. However, this doesn’t mean having to paint walls or apply expensive, new wallpaper – a move which can seriously dictate the look of the rest of the room. Walls, these days, are more often than not being left neutral with the required tones of colour in a room added through a new sofa, rug, curtains or accessories, such as cushions. This year, colour is strong and saturated, such as navy, turquoise or peacock green. Rich fabrics, including velvet and corduroy, are big for 2014 and will also be durable. These colours will also perfectly complement Pantone’s 2014 Colour of the Year – Radiant Orchid. This is a red-violet tone and, if used as an accent colour, works amazingly well with black, grey and olive green.
Interior design trends for 2014
With plenty of interior design websites readily available to view, all offering information on current trends and featuring a mind-boggling array of ideas, you would think it would be easier to dress up our own homes. However, this overload of information can actually make the job harder as we try to navigate our way through the raft of ideas. Instead, remember that rather than committing to the whole design story and creating a ‘cookie cutter house’, settling on just one or two ideas from different sources is what makes a home individual and personal. 2014 brings with it trends, some new and some transitioning from last year. To update your home, be particular about ideas that work within your four walls and stick to a limit! Here

Instead of the outdated painted feature wall, this year, use artwork and wall-hangings to add an interesting focal point. These can really add a unique dimension to a home. Accessories too are becoming more personal with the trend to display meaningful pieces that are new and old rather than all from one shop floor. There is a trend towards metallic items, mixing gold with silver, brass and bronze, adding a richness and opulence to a room. Natural materials have been well within the interior design radar for seasons but there has been an increased popularity in recent times for using cowhide on a piece of upholstery or on benches and consoles. There is always the faux version if you are not a ‘real’ fan. Having sofas and chairs in different fabrics and prints, while in harmonious colours, works extremely
well and creates a cohesive look. This year also sees the use of lighter coloured wood with honey and caramel tones ranking higher than dark tones for furniture. This freshens up rooms and particularly impacts on kitchen designs. Kitchens, themselves, are becoming more and more striking with jewel-toned cabinetry, dramatic light features, gold and copper metallic accents and expensive-looking stone and glass countertops and backsplashes. With splashes of rich colour amongst soft grey and strong navy, opulent fabric, beautiful wood and light-catching metals, 2014 is a year of unique and new combinations and the result will be the creation of homes that are truly individual and personal.

Bar Crusher 780HT
The aluminium fisher designed for the rough stuff!
Melbourne-based, family-owned Bar Crusher Boats have long been renowned for manufacturing safe, strong and reliable fishing boats. By using some of the most technologically advanced aluminium hulls in the business, their range of craft has built an enviable reputation for being able to handle the toughest of sea-going conditions and for their exceptional stability. The toughest and most durable models in the range are the hard top series (HT), and Bar Crusher currently offers 6 different models to choose from. Designed to keep going when conditions get really tough, the HT series features, in addition to the all-weather hard-top, toughened, full-height, tinted glass windscreens with the line-up ranging in length from 5.75 metres up to the flagship 7.8 metre 780HT. Constructed from heavy duty marine grade plate aluminium and featuring the trademark Bar Crusher deep-V hull and expertly engineered Rigideck™ sub-floor system, the 780HT is, in-short, the ultimate fishing companion. With a 2.47 metre beam, its huge cockpit fishing area features a self-draining
deck, step through transom, rod holders, plumbed live bait tank, in-floor fish storage tank and large volume storage pockets. Allowing for full standing room and for an uninterrupted 360-degree view from the helm, the helm station is also capable of installing the very latest large-screen marine electronics. Fitted with a 280 litre fuel tank and with capacity for a 200 to 300hp outboard, the 780HT is the perfect trailerable option for extended offshore action. Luxurious seating, full size bunks, stainless steel appliances and a large food preparation area also make for plenty of happy weekends on the water. Add in a vast array of standard features including hydraulic steering, a dual battery system, rocket launcher and low voltage coaming lights and optional extras, including a lock-up cabin, overhead LED lighting, anchor winch and deck wash, and it’s clear that the 780HT offers a compelling proposition for serious fishos. Arctic Cat 500 ATV The purr-fect way to travel!
For over 50 years, US-based Arctic Cat has been designing and manufacturing a range of snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles (ATV’s) and Side by Sides from its Minnesota factory. As one of the most widely recognised brand names in the market, the company has also had considerable success down under with its award-winning ATV’s in recent years. With 4 engine options to choose from in the line-up, the 500 ATV has currently proved to be the popular choice. This tough, go-anywhere vehicle comes fitted with a powerful fuelinjected 443cc, SOHC, liquid-cooled single cylinder engine tuned for any temperature, elevation or humidity level. The performance and handling is enhanced by its independent Ride-In front and rear suspension, specially designed to create a low centre of gravity without sacrificing ground clearance, ultraresponsive steering and hydraulic discs. Plus, when the going gets tough, simply flip a switch and the ATV instantly converts to 4WD mode. Featuring an impressive range of equipment as standard, riders will be particularly enamoured with the state-of-the-art instrument panel complete with no less than 14 critical operation information indicators. Displaying engine temperature and oil pressure data, 30
the digital gauge also features a battery condition indicator, speedometer/tachometer, odometer, gear position indicator and differential lock indicator. Solid steel front and rear racks offer strong and durable stowage options. Rated for 100lbs carrying capacity on the front and 200lbs on the rear, they have been cleverly designed to make it easy to add attachments. The ATV also features a useful rear 2-inch receiver which means that the vehicle is simple to hook up to a boat or utility trailer. With eye-catching, powder-coated aluminium wheels and stylish, all-over painted bodywork, the Arctic Cat 500 ATV looks as good as it performs. And with a 21.5 litre fuel capacity there will certainly be plenty of opportunity to test out this well-proportioned vehicle’s outstanding capabilities. Inline and Roller Skating Get fit in 2014!
If one of your new year’s resolutions was to get fit (and progress has been slow!), why not take up roller or inline skating? Bunbury is home to The Rink, one of the leading national skating centres. Operating for over 10 years, the centre provides skating activities suitable for all ages and skating abilities. Here are the top ten tips recommended by Coach Susan Brooks to skate yourself to good health:1. Sleep well and eat nutritiously to give yourself plenty of pre-exercise energy. 2. Get into the right mood. Before you jump into your skates, add a glide to your step by grooving to upbeat music or skate with friends to make the experience really enjoyable. 3. Other people matter. Find a skating buddy to keep you enthused and motivated. 4. Grow your knowledge. Reach for small, achievable goals that will boost your selfefficacy. Participate in lessons, either private or in classes, to boost your co-ordination and confidence. This is particularly recommended for beginners. 5. Planning to skate outside? See yourself flying down the cycle path with your MP3 on? Outdoor inline skating is fun but again take some lessons and get your skills up to enjoy skating outdoors safely. It’s not the best place to start. 6. Get in flow. Break down each session into smaller episodes, matching the challenge to your next skill set while practising regularly what you have already achieved. Regularly
assess your progress and apply your full concentration to the activity, congratulating yourself when you do well. 7. Enjoy the burn. Don’t be afraid to feel your heart rate go up and learn to love the burn in your muscles. Don’t just sit on the side and watch. 8. Involve your mind and your body. Keep learning! Learn more about the basic skills at the regular classes and participate in artistic, inline hockey, derby and speed skating. 9. Reliable knowledge. Talk to a qualified instructor about equipment. Do you need to purchase your own, if so, when? What is the level of your skills and what type do you need? How much protective gear will you need to help you learn that next step? 10. Get good mind fuel after exercise. Exercise facilitates brain cell growth and while your muscles are recuperating after the effort, your brain is actively busy building new synapses. What you do post-exercise is essential in reaping the full benefits of your activity. So too is what you consume. Always remember to rehydrate and eat something good for you. By following the above, you will be not only be stimulating the mind but also following Healthway’s recommendation for good health. 30 minutes (adults) or 60 minutes (children) of physical activity every day of the week. Located at Gibbons Road, Davenport, for further information on inline skating at The Rink, call 9725 6999 or visit www.therink.com.au for general skating and class times.

With one of the largest regional dealerships in Western Australia set to open its doors in Bunbury, local car buyers will soon be able to view some of the world’s leading marques in one purpose-built location. Combining three brands under one roof, Geographe Ford, Bunbury Volkswagen and Bunbury Hyundai, and located in state-of-the-art facilities on Spencer Street, the new dealership will include plush modern offices, spacious showrooms and a $4m 24 bay workshop utilising the very latest in automotive technology. With Geographe Ford Busselton also part of the same group, the opening of the facility is set to provide a level of choice and service unmatched in the south west. Run by a team with many years’ experience in the automotive industry, these are exciting times for car buyers in the south west. To celebrate the opening of the new dealership, The Bunbury Life met Colin Shaikh, Dealer Principal, to find out more about him and his plans.
names for their cars or can relate back to a special moment involving a car they owned at the time.
Who have you worked for during your career? During my time in the industry, I have been fortunate to have met many well respected practitioners who have inspired me to further enhance my own career, including Tyson Sutton, Dealer Principal of Regent Motors - a family-owned group of businesses. He is now my business partner in this venture and he also has family in Bunbury.
What persuaded you to move to Bunbury? A number of reasons. Having been raised in a New Zealand town similar in size to Bunbury, I’ve always wanted to bring up my family in a place with a similar feel. Bunbury has plenty of country charm yet also has a thriving business community. I’m inspired by the loyalty shown to local businesses by the community and the current feeling of progress towards the future of Bunbury. The opportunity to start a new business here is an exciting prospect.
How long have you been involved in the automotive industry and what sparked your interest? My association with the automotive industry spans a period of over 25 years. During that time, I have held a number of roles, starting as an Apprentice Automotive Technician before progressing to my current position as a Director and Owner of Geographe Ford, Bunbury Hyundai and Bunbury Volkswagen. My interest in the business was sparked, quite simply, by people, our customers. As a mechanic, I always wanted to be a salesperson as I wanted to be the one chatting to the customers. I love the industry. Cars are still a very emotional thing for many people and I know a number of customers who either have

What benefits will your brand new state-of-the-art dealership bring to Bunbury and the south west? We believe firstly a superior level of service. Set to open in March 2014, the three-franchise facility will be modern and accessible and will provide unrivalled customer service both in the sales and service departments. Each franchise will have its own designated areas, including comfortable hospitality areas and parking. The workshop is arguably the biggest in the south west, featuring 24 bays and is that clean you could eat you lunch off it! In addition to that, we are ‘factory backed’ so our customers no longer need to go to a non-branded service outlet to obtain a cheap service as most of our models have capped price servicing . We offer to beat any outside price and only use genuine parts and fluids. We also want to be known as a place of local employment for those who want a career in the automotive industry, and we believe in true customer service.
no more for cars than you did 10 years ago - in fact, in most cases, less. Plus, the industry has become highly regulated, which has improved customer service and levels of professionalism within the industry. A welcome change.
Do you have a favourite car and what do you currently drive? I am currently driving a Volkswagen Touareg. Stylish and gutsy, it’s an outstanding vehicle. If you asked me what my favourite car is, though, it is the car that one of my customers has enjoyed for a number of years before returning it to the dealership to buy the new model!
How do you relax away from the office? The business and the construction of the new dealership keep me very busy, as does my home life with my wife and 2 small children. However, I do enjoy a run along the spectacular Bunbury coastline, a visit to my local gym, or a long Sunday lunch somewhere outdoors sampling the great local produce. My wife and I love it here.
How has the automotive industry changed since you started your career? The industry has changed in a number of ways, largely with the level of standard features now available in cars. Technology, safety, and comfort have all vastly improved yet you pay 35

Mercedes Benz S-Class Luxurious sedan continues to rule the roost!
It’s the ultimate symbol of success and for over 40 years the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been at the pinnacle of luxury motoring. Launched in 1972 with the introduction of the W116 series, it’s not only been the must-have luxury sedan for any self-respecting businessman over the last 4 decades, but has also been responsible for introducing a raft of new technologies to the cars we drive today; ABS, airbags, cruise control, traction control, stability control and keyless entry all made their debut in an S-Class. Officially unveiled in mid-2013, the S-Class (W222 series) is the first all-new S-Class for over 8 years and, once again, the car is awash with new class-leading technologies (more about those later). Exuding a combination of sporting elegance and imposing dynamism, the exterior styling of the S-Class takes its cues from the legendary Maybach limousine whilst its flowing lines are strikingly enhanced by its long sweeping, coupé-style roof. Mercedes Benz aficionados will also note the three-pointed star still mounted on the bonnet. We like that! Three engine options are available here and first up is the V6 turbo-diesel 350Bluetec. Delivering 190kW of power and 620Nm of torque, the “the car’s epic proportions 3.0L engine is capable of reveal an ultra-luxurious outstanding fuel economy, just world filled with the very 6.0L per 100kms. latest gadgets” Next, the V8 petrol, fitted with a 4.7L bi-turbo powerplant delivers 335kW of power and 700Nm of torque whilst achieving a fuel economy of 9.2L per 100kms. Finally, the high performance 63AMG, with its 5.5L bi-turbo petrol V8, delivers a blistering 430kW of power and an astonishing 900Nm of torque whilst still achieving an economy rate of 10.2L per 100kms. All models come with a 7-speed automatic transmission with the AMG version getting the AMG Speedshift transmission designed for high performance. Inside, the car’s epic proportions reveal an ultra-luxurious world filled with the very latest gadgets. Huge display screens cover the vast majority of the dashboard and a swathe of high quality materials and high end components, including a Burmester audio system, on-board Wi-Fi hotspot, climate controlled seats and glorious leather upholstery, provide a serene, whisper-quiet environment in which to travel. To relax further, try the massage chair option and really unwind! 36
motoring However, it’s the safety features and new technologies that once again steal the show. Magic Body Control is a new feature that scans the road ahead, through the use of a camera, to detect road conditions in advance, adjusting the suspension accordingly. It even flashes a light on external stationary or moving hazards to alert pedestrians of the car’s presence. Plus, the S-Class now also monitors 360 degrees around itself to make the driver aware of possible dangers. In the case of the driver not reacting in time, the car takes control and guides the vehicle clear of danger, avoiding collision where possible. Finally, a brand new lighting system powered by
hundreds of LED lights provides the exterior and interior lighting with lights varying in intensity in built up, brighter areas. Large, lithe and luxurious, the all new S-Class continues to set the standard for style, class and the very latest technological innovations. And if history is anything to go by, much of what’s on offer may even one day be readily available to all. In the meantime, the future is here! Beware of Credit Card Debt
untamed credit card balance can have serious consequences. While credit cards have their place, they should always be used with caution. Don’t fall into the trap of buying goods that you can’t really afford and don’t buy goods on credit based on what you might expect to earn in the future. Instead, use credit cards wisely and pay off the whole balance each month. That way you can still enjoy, in most cases, a 30 day interest-free period, and no high monthly interest payments. If, however, your credit card debts have spiralled out of control, a chat with a mortgage broker could be the answer. By consolidating debts into a mortgage at a considerably lower interest rate, the debt could be paid off over a much quicker period. Whilst consolidating debt can be a good option, it is only recommended that this is done once as the aim of the consolidation is to ensure that a financial situation like this never arises again. Theo Krinos is Finance Manager at The Mortgage Gallery, Bunbury. Located at 32 Stirling Street, he can be contacted on 9791 4177 or by email at theokrinos@themortgagegallery.com.au

If you’ve given your credit card a good workout over the last few months, then you are certainly not alone. With Christmas and summer holidays to pay for, the early part of the year is a common time around the nation for increased credit card debt - debt that can become a major obstacle to paying off a home loan. With typical interest rates on cards still up around 20%, even with the recent reductions in interest rates, card holders who fail to pay the balance off in full each month can soon find there’s a large gaping hole in the monthly household finances - a situation that can be a real impediment to getting ahead financially. Let’s look at the facts. With credit card rates at 20% and a typical home loan currently between 5 and 6%, every $ earned pays off over 3 times more home loan debt than credit card debt, making each dollar considerably more powerful. Reducing home loan debt increases equity in the property and ultimately the borrowing power of that property’s owner. In short, if you’re considering 2014 as the year to buy or invest in bricks and mortar, an 40

Land ahoy! Or is it? The current buzz around town is that blocks are disappearing fast and prices are on the move - upwards, for a change! Yes, the early signs for 2014 are extremely positive for the property market in the greater Bunbury region. Having just experienced our biggest January for several years, with 60 plus sales, all the indicators are that, after the slump of the last seven years, the market is indicating an upward trend for the coming months. However, be warned sellers. Don’t get too greedy just yet as there is still plenty of available, established stock and current buyers are well researched and very astute. And remember, the best time to sell is still in the initial 6 weeks of your property hitting the market. Currently in Bunbury, we are seeing the market change from a ‘buyers’ market’ into a more ‘balanced market’ and we believe we could still be a year or two away from experiencing a ‘sellers’ market’ again - if at all! rates low and steady, there is a plenty of action in the $200 to $500k range with established houses and units returning good rents, making these properties either neutral or cash flow positive in some cases. There is no doubt this is a great time for first time investors to enter the market and grab an investment property without having to stretch budgets. Investors can take advantage of existing equity in the home and through a combination of lower prices, steady rent returns and low interest rates (i.e. affordable loan repayments), great opportunities exist. There is nothing more annoying than having to clean up a workman’s mess before being able to enjoy a new installation. We operate an accounting business. We know we are not the only accountants in town. While we know we are great accountants, the greatness of an accountant is hard to measure. So what do we focus on as our point of difference? It’s customer service. Our clients don’t walk out of our shop with something that they can wear, eat or put on the mantelpiece; however we do hope that they enjoy their ‘shopping’ experience with our business. It’s our business as accountants to deal with compliance requirements, however, we also have a team that is happy to talk to customers about to not only how to grow their businesses but also how to maximise returns. If you are looking for someone who can do more than just tax, come and talk to us. Not many of us can claim to have an exclusive business. We don’t have a business that demands customers must come to us and, in turn, we don’t have a monopoly. This means that we have to compete for market share with other like businesses. So why do your customers come to you? As consumers we are simple beasts. We want the best product at the best price for the least amount of fuss. A pretty simple model. So, why overcomplicate the buying process? What level of satisfaction do your customers get from shopping with you? Have you ever shopped at your own business? What does it look like when you sit on the other side of the counter? Here are some very simple low cost ideas that are easy to implement and can dramatically improve your customers’ experiences. • Ensure a professional presentation of your business. Tidy customer areas, well presented staff and a pleasant shopping environment. • Branding - Ensure there is consistency in the way the business is presented to the public and also ensure the business is easy to find. • Customer Service - Do you engage with your customers, do they feel important and are you selling or offering them everything that your business has to offer. • Follow Up - Ask your customers what they 44

St John of God Cancer Respite Centre, Dalyellup
Three years ago, following a chance conversation between the CEO’s of The Bethanie Group and St John of God Hospital, the genesis of a unique joint venture was conceived. Construction of the St John of God cancer treatment ward at the Bunbury hospital campus was about to commence and the need for a respite accommodation centre had long been identified. With the Bethanie Group about to commence construction of the community housing apartments in Dalyellup, this chance conversation led to the land being offered by the Bethanie Group and within a year of planning and approvals, construction had begun. The plans for the respite accommodation included a 14 suite centre with various lounge areas, a common kitchen area and meals facility. Local builder Tallwood Constructions was awarded the contract and the project was completed under budget and a month ahead of the tight time period specified. The design and quality of the project was recognised last September when it was awarded the Special Purpose Housing Project of the Year in the 2013 HIA SW Awards, receiving the state award in November. The project is now nominated for the National HIA award to be announced in May of this year. Owner and Managing Director of Tallwood Constructions Alex Campbell spoke to The Bunbury Life about the project, “I am very proud of my office staff, supervisor Stuart Bremner and the dedicated suppliers and sub-contractors who worked on this project. It is a celebration of collaboration between two diverse clients and I believe everyone involved gave their best as the facility is of such importance to the community.” For further information on building with Tallwood Constructions, contact Alex Campbell on 0427 568 214 or go online at www.tallwood.com.au 46

Meet….Darryl Toreaux In this edition of The Bunbury Life, we catch up with Darryl Toreaux, the new Business Development Manager at Bartercard South West.
How long have you been associated with Bartercard? I was a member in the early 1990’s with my first company and have been working for Bartercard since 1999. In 2002, I headed over to the UK during which time I was running the consultancy team and also involved in sports sponsorship and marketing. I returned to Australia in 2008, based on the Gold Coast, before recently relocating to Bunbury.
The system suits any business that has spare capacity, is looking to reduce costs or just wants more customers. Not many companies can guarantee sales like Bartercard. As we grow so do the opportunities between the members.
Is there a particular deal that you have achieved for a client that stands out as a highlight?
How can Bartercard work for local businesses?
One of our local businesses has just run a promotion to successfully attract more customers. He purchased overseas holidays on Bartercard and then gave them away via a weekly draw. By doing this, he increased his customer base, thus increasing his cash flow. Instead of paying for the holidays in cash they were paid for by the extra customers we are now sending him. This has ended in a win/win situation for all. More cash clients and no cash outlay. A simple way of thinking outside the square to gain a competitive advantage.
The best thing about the Bartercard system is that it connects business people by giving them a way to help each other grow through the use of modern bartering. Members gain more customers by using Bartercard, reduce cash spending, fill downtime and gain access to an interest-free line of credit. Now, more than ever, it’s vital that businesses save cash, and by tapping into our interest-free line of credit, businesses get that extra push to help combat high overdraft charges to enable them to keep growing when cash flow is tight or business is slow.
How have you ended up in Bunbury?
What is your key focus for South West WA?
An opportunity came up to relocate to the south west and to take on the management of the region. This came about as Bartercard Australia is investing heavily into the WA economy and has big plans for growth in the state. My team and I grabbed the opportunity as we have often heard wonderful things about the city and the entire region.
A key focus is to help bring more tourists to the region. Through Bartercard, I am able to promote our local businesses all around Australia and into international markets, such as the USA, United Kingdom, New Zealand and Thailand. Whether it’s a café, resort or hotel, all will benefit from the increase in visitors that Bartercard can attract. Members are loyal to other members and will always spend with a Bartercard member first.
How do you spend your spare time away from the office? Being new to the area, visiting all our clients has had us regularly travelling throughout the south west. The Margaret River so far is definitely a favourite and I’m looking forward to many more travels in the region. It’s like being a resident tourist really. Everywhere is new to me and the team.
What kinds of businesses suit the Bartercard model? Bartercard suits all small to medium sized businesses although in saying that we do have some very large corporates using us as well. 48

particular subject. This could include photographs of family members, seascapes, patterns in nature, sailing, cars, maps or prints of artwork. Keeping to the same subject matter will bring the separate pictures together as one piece of art as will settling on one colour of frame and how they are arranged. Try starting from the middle of the wall and work around in outward circles or a spiral of frames. Or ensure every frame has a side that has a certain parallel measurement, such as 30mm, to one other frame. Another successful look is to create a shape of all the frames together.
Wall Art A feature wall within a room has almost become a requirement of a well-finished home. Commonly a wall of contrasting paint or flamboyant wallpaper, interior designers are now moving towards a more individual approach to decorating and this involves sourcing unique artwork. A striking piece of art can say a lot more about a home and its owner than a block of paint from the current season’s on-trend colour palette. Individual and personal, it will have been chosen because it is of particular interest to the buyer.
Frames in themselves are diverse and can make a beautiful artistic arrangement when hung without their backing or their glass. Empty frames like this work best if they vary in their ornateness and style. Sticking to the same colour is recommended unless using metal frames. These can work well as a group even if the metal colours, such as gilt, silver and bronze, vary. Finally, how about using mirrors, either in interesting Art Deco designs or as framed mirrors to create that unique look? With their reflected light, these work particularly well in part of a room that needs to be brightened up.
For budgets that don’t stretch to buying expensive artworks, try creating your own special piece. A simple way is to create a photo wall of a

Beauty Talk By Niobe Gulley
Moisture Surge CC Cream is Clinique’s version of the cream, with the ‘CC’ standing for ‘Colour Corrector’. The aim of Clinique’s product is to counteract the dullness in skin and any redness or blemishes as well as providing hydration and broad spectrum SPF30. Clinique’s CC technology helps to reflect light multi-dimensionally, meaning skin looks brighter and imperfections appear reduced. The cream comes in 4 shades, is oil-free and, as with all Clinique products, is allergy tested and fragrance free. And, finally, coming soon with its own BB cream is Estée Lauder. Promised to be multi-perfecting while giving an all-day glow, it is sure to be worth the wait! Niobe Gulley is the owner of The Beauty Shop and The Beauty Shop Beauty Room. Two destinations in one location in the Stirling Centre, Bunbury, for all your beauty needs.
In our quest for perfect skin, we have always had plenty of products on the market to choose from, all promising wonderful results. For years, cosmetic companies have actively promoted products that hydrate skin, protect skin from the sun’s rays and provide bright and flawless skin. A relatively new development in beauty, however, has made a huge impact in the market. The BB cream, an all-in-one solution, has meant the end to hunting for and buying a selection of lotions and potions as, quite simply, it does all the work itself. BB cream, or Beauty Balm, made its first appearance in the Asian market and since 2011 has been taking Europe and the world by storm. Replacing the need for several different products, a BB cream moisturises skin, provides it with sunscreen and gives an even and healthy complexion. Originally created to help people who had undergone laser skin surgery, as well as performing as a light foundation or tinted moisturiser to conceal skin blemishes, the cream also provides lasting benefits for skin. BB creams also include ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid and antioxidants, which work to give new vigour and life to skin. Not unsurprisingly, the big beauty houses have been busy devising their own versions of a BB cream and today there is an increasingly wide range to choose from. Shiseido has recently launched its own BB cream onto the market, Perfect Hydrating BB Cream. The cream comes in two shades and has an oil-free, light texture while also providing an SPF of 30. The product promises to produce bright and natural looking skin with an even tone – an essential benefit of using a BB cream. The quality of the user’s skin also improves day-by-day. 51

Dr Harvey’s Clinic Part 4 Lip Augmentation
will give a more voluptuous and fuller look. Achieving the correct proportions for the lips to enable balance and harmony with the face is one of the main considerations given and typically the top lip should not overhang the lower lip by more than 1mm. During the procedure, rather than opting for a dental block, we recommend adding a local anaesthetic in order to produce a more comfortable experience for the patient. Side effects are generally minor but may include temporary tenderness, swelling, lumpiness and bruising. These effects are usually uncommon and if experienced are resolved within a few days. Results from the treatment can usually last up to 12 months, in some cases even longer, and most patients can return to work the same day or are able go out in the evening. Dr Harvey Sacks is dedicated to the advancement and teaching of best practice cosmetic medicine. A joint founder of the Cosmetics Physicians Society of Australasia, he is a former executive member of the board of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery. Running clinics in Perth, Waikiki, Mandurah, Bunbury and Kalgoorlie, Dr Sacks is available in Bunbury at St. John of God Hospital, Bussell Highway. Call Irene on 0421 789462 to make an appointment.
One of the more common filler treatments, lip augmentation aims to boost areas where shape and definition have been lost. As we age, lips lose volume, the skin around the lips gets thinner and wrinkles and the corners of the mouth can also droop. Treatments can typically help older individuals with very thin lips to restore a more youthful appearance, or they can create larger, fuller, sexier lips for those wanting an enhanced look. Before any treatment commences, a number of factors are taken into account. These include the age of the patient, facial size and proportions, the ideal lip ratio, the lip borders, the width of the mouth and the side appearance and balance. A natural result is the most important outcome and for a first treatment we often recommend a conservative approach. More product can always be added later. The shape of the lips can be improved by injecting the borders. This gives a more defined lip without necessarily giving a lot of volume. This procedure can also turn up the corners of the mouth. For improving volume, injecting the body of the lips is the key. This 52

Owning a dog should be an exciting and rewarding experience and the key to getting the most out of your dog, and ensuring dog ownership is pleasurable, is to start early. Here are my top five tips for getting the most out of your dog.
1. Puppies benefit enormously from socialising. They need regular, friendly, social contact with humans and other dogs, particularly in the first 16 weeks of life. Research has shown that dogs not used to socialising are more likely to develop antisocial behaviours, whereas friendly socialisation reduces the fear of other dogs and people, and improves a dog’s ability to cope with new situations. When attending classes, always ensure that the class is run by experienced, qualified trainers and that the dog is healthy and has received its first vaccination. Dogs should then progress to transition classes and adult training classes so that the education continues for life. 2. Always use reward-based training with your dog. Rewards may be in the form of a food treat or verbal praise and attention – basically ... cont. pg 58 56

4. Never leave a child under 10 unsupervised with a dog, even a familiar family pet. Even the friendliest dog can react if it’s scared or feels threatened. 5. When toilet training, it’s important to teach the dog where it is good to go and where it is not. For young puppies, take them to the best toileting spot every 30 minutes or so, straight after eating. When they toilet there, praise them and give them a reward. If you catch the dog toileting in the wrong area, make a loud noise to startle it so it stops, carry it out to the correct place, then praise it if it goes some more. If the dog goes in the wrong spot and is not caught in the act, you can’t tell the dog off. Rubbing their nose in it doesn’t work either and can cause anxiety problems. Clean up the mess and keep persevering. They all get there eventually. Dr Braden Collins BSc BVMS CMAVA is Veterinary Surgeon at Bunbury Vet Clinic, 183 Blair Street. anything your dog likes! Reward-based training generally involves ignoring any ‘unwanted’ behaviour. In this way, the dog is not rewarded with attention for doing what you don’t want them to do. If a dog is not rewarded for certain behaviour, then they tend to stop doing it. For example, ignoring your dog when it jumps up to greet you rather than pushing it down means that your dog is not rewarded with your attention. This includes avoiding eye contact with your dog and only rewarding it with attention or treats when all four paws are on the ground. Take 10 to 15 minutes each day training your dog throughout its life. 3. To modify existing problem behaviours, have your dog checked by a vet to rule out any underlying medical problems, then seek the help of a qualified trainer who uses rewardbased training techniques. A veterinary behaviourist may be required to help solve some behaviour problems.

Jewels in the Crowd By Annie Malone
My Dad, rest his wise and beautiful soul, always said to me that everyone must have something that they believe in. A set of rules to guide us through the maze of everyday life and decision making, something meaningful to commit to, a belief to sustain us through our moments of doubt. Philosophical words, but allow me to make my point. Thirty years ago, I became passionate about alternative food choices. I have been fortunate to be able to operate a business for twenty-five years that provides fresh and healthy food choices for the human race. The belief that what I am doing makes a difference to my customers’ health is one of the things that sustains my passion to embrace every work day with zest and vigour. My Dad was right, believing in something makes every day worthwhile. However, to set up an ethical business model is one thing but to follow these ethical principles through every facet of the business model is the difficult “other”. So it was with interest that I recently read, in a popular business magazine, an article about the current most successful café franchises in Australia. The article told a story of a successful café owner of a popular franchise, who originally bought the business so that he could provide a great product and service and spend time with his customers. Needless to say after 5 years in the business he now has 2 cafés, his business is competing well with the other cafés in the franchise group, yet he still doesn’t have time to spend with his customers. The
article then graded the success of each franchise by the number of outlets in each group and what the growth rate of each was. Numbers, numbers and more numbers! Nowhere in the article did it talk about the type of food produced by the franchises, values or food principles. I myself have always been at odds with the ethics of franchises in the food industry as I feel that along the way the original commitment to product is lost. This article confirmed my long held suspicion that in this industry the bigger a business becomes, the harder it is to keep the original principle as the guiding light at the helm. Bunbury is very lucky right now to have a number of small cafés and restaurants with owner-operators creating individual and unique businesses. Each has their own flavour, menu direction and niche place in the hospitality scene. Each is fighting hard against the mass produced stereotype franchise that customers still compare them to. To stay successful, they each need to believe in their concept and stay true to their ideals. Look beyond the swish marketing of the multi-nationals and embrace the rock solid values and ethics of small businesses, who are punching well above their weight, risking all and doing it with passion and belief. Give a jump for joy that Bunbury isn’t a carbon copy of any Australian city mall. It still has some individuality. And yes, individuality…..that is my point. 59

Dissecting the Geographe Wine Region By Jake Atkinson
As one of the most exciting wine regions in Australia, the Geographe wine region is also one of the most diverse. From the citrus growing mecca of Harvey to the sandy costal flats of Capel, the region can be dissected into four prominent grape growing subregions: Harvey, Ferguson Valley, Donnybrook and Capel. Each sub-region possesses its own distinct climatic conditions providing a platform for unique and individual grape varieties within the greater Geographe. In the north, Harvey has proven to be a successful player in the production of full-bodied reds, fortified wines and even Italian varieties, such as Nebbiolo and Arneis. Producers of note include Harvey River Bridge Estate, Vineyard 28 and Fifth Estate. Next in the
Ferguson Valley, large quantities of premium producers work with a wide range of grape varieties from cool climate loving Riesling to sun-soaked Grenache and Shiraz vines. Recommended wines here include Willow Bridge Estate’s Black Dog Shiraz, The Chardonnays of 52 Stones and St Aidan, Talisman’s Malbec and great examples of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre (GSM) from both Green Door and Ferguson Hart Estate. South east of Bunbury, Donnybrook is synonymous with apples and stone fruit although the champions of this area are the big reds! Italian and Spanish varieties as well as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel make up the majority of these. Top producers in this area include Mazza, Barton Jones, Oakway Estate, Smallwater Estate and Barrecas. Finally, to the south is the Capel sub-region stretching from the Indian Ocean all the way inland and upwards to the Whicher Ranges. This large area contains many different micro-climates that make it suitable for a range of grapes, including Merlot, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Destinations such as Capel Vale and the new cellar door at Whicher Ridge Estate are a must visit! The Geographe region really has so much to offer and many scrumptious wines. But don’t just take my word for it, go and experience it for yourself! Jake Atkinson is Sommelier at Mojo’s Restaurant, Victoria Street, Bunbury.

focus will be to promote the boutique and artisan nature of the wineries in the region together with the people behind the businesses. Thanks to the support of sponsor Covert Signs of Donnybrook and the Shire, the association and its members have been able to start rolling out these signs throughout the region and it is hoped similar support from the other shires in the region will be forthcoming. Barrecas Winery in Donnybrook is
changing its opening hours. The winery will now be open 6 days 10am to 5pm, closed on Wednesdays. Also keep an eye out for the soon to be released new vintages. These will include the return of a Shiraz Malbec and the latest Shiraz (an award-winning wine in the past) is set to be a cracker according to reports. Also look out for the ever popular preservative-free Shiraz, perfect for anyone who suffers slight allergens to sulphur. Don’t forget to check out the wineries latest news on Facebook. Bonking Frog Wines on Dardanup West Road, North Boyanup, has recently added a great range of timber serving boards to its range of gifts, branded with its famous frog logo. Made from Camphor Laurel, a timber which contains a natural, anti-bacterial agent, the boards are not only extremely hygienic but are also in keeping with the wineries commitment to supporting sustainable and environmentally friendly products. FabSlabs are 100% Australian owned and made, available in small, medium and large sizes and prices start from $39.95 for the small board, which measures 43cm long and 23cm wide. 64
