Welcome to the 25th edition of The Bunbury Life! Twenty-five editions and the start of our seventh year of publication! Where has the time gone?! A good opportunity, I think, to once again thank all of our advertisers and readers whose unflinching support has made this journey possible. It’s a journey we at the magazine have thoroughly enjoyed and, don’t forget, if we are going to continue to entertain and inform, we would love to hear from as many of you as regularly as possible. We are always particularly keen for suggestions on new subjects we might cover in the publication. Get those emails pinging in! Twenty-five issues! Sounds like a celebration is

on the cards and one of our readers could be doing just that. In this issue, one lucky reader can win a fabulous mixed case of wine from Boyanup-based Bonking Frog Wines. Plus, don’t miss the chance to win one of twenty signed copies of Rina the Dolphin, a delightful children’s story set right here in Bunbury. Enjoy the read!

Winter Fashion

Stephanie Says…

The latest fashion trends from The Bunbury Life’s resident fashion expert...

in the middle and the belt or tie will look effortlessly cool in a contrasting colour or texture. It’s a feminine silhouette that produces a strong look. Also, look out for wraps in the form of huge blanket scarves, the bigger the better, in oversized check and plaid prints. The slimline pant is a mainstay for men this winter with legs cropped around the ankle and layers worn on top to create a bulkier top half. And, as a contrast, relaxed track-style pants will link in with the sport luxe trend. For sweaters, the rollneck jumper in a fine knit looks great with either type of pant. And not going anywhere fast is the check print – in any size or format – and not only for sweaters, for coats too. Keep extra warm outside by wearing jackets that feature the quilting effect, which is set to be a very popular look for jackets either in a slim cut or in a baseball style.

Add style and warmth to the wardrobe This winter, covering up will be an absolute joy! With so many fabulous looks to choose from, take inspiration from the new season’s trends and embrace the cooler weather. This season, a wearable look for everyone is sport luxe. This athletic trans-seasonal trend gets revamped throughout the year and this winter, it centres on soft greys and nudes. Tops with sheer, PVC or even tweed panels add the glamour to a pair of slimline stretch pants or track pants. A quilting effect is very popular on pants, skirts and tops too and will look great on a fabric bomber jacket to finish off the look. For feet, add a pair of sneakers – slip-on’s, laced or midrise. Pale pink goes perfectly with greys and, although normally a spring or summer colour, it promises to be huge this season. Winter coats look incredibly soft and dreamy in this pastel shade and are quite a diversion from the usual black. Looking for warm comfort often means snuggling up in oversized roomy knits. Long and lean jumpers as well as waterfall and boyfriend cardigans do the job very nicely. Going for fine knits means you can layer too without looking bulky. Other knitwear trending currently includes jumpers with chunky jewelled embellishments or printed animals. They look great teamed with a midi skirt or narrow cropped pants. Add a pair of ankle boots to the skirt or loafers to the pants. Moving away from the cocoon shape of last winter, this year’s coats are being cinched in at the waist with a casual tie at the front or a statement belt. The coat doesn’t have to meet

The Power of Blogging

The fashion world is constantly evolving and progressing, immersing us in new trends each season. But who decides what makes fashion sense? While designers, magazine editors and celebrities have traditionally been the ones to innovate and forecast trends, today, a growing number of bloggers are posting up their own fashion inspirations and ideas that influence new styles. Posts are current and accessed immediately, allowing new trends to quickly take hold. The idea of starting an individual fashion blog may be a daunting thought for many but local Western Australian fashion bloggers, such as Bonnie Doran (Bonnie Friday) and Andrea Goh (What’s the Goh?), are having an increasing impact on the fashion world. It’s a brave move to expose your own personal style on a global scale for the rest of the world to observe, critique and judge but both Doran and Goh overcame these jitters and as a result have created their own online platforms where they share their unique, quirky styles and local influences. Initially studying law, Doran began her blog in 2010 after realising that she was neglecting her creative side. Blogging meant she could now indulge her two passions; fashion and writing. Goh was initially sceptical of the blogging idea but after encouragement from her friends, she finally came around and decided to ‘put herself out there’. There have been many highs, and a few lows,

but both bloggers have reaped the rewards of their consistent blogging efforts. For Goh, being nominated for The Western Australian Fashion Awards was a highlight and credit to her hard work. Doran’s biggest success was marked by a once-in-a-lifetime trip to New York Fashion Week, which was sponsored by Nokia and ELLE. “Nothing beats the atmosphere of the Lincoln Centre during Fashion Week! I met so many amazing creatives on that trip, and I have remained in close contact with bloggers, fashion designers, jewellers and media personalities from all around the world,” she said. However, both fashion bloggers believe the biggest motivation to continue sharing their everyday style ideas comes simply from their fans and the recognition they receive for their inspiring posts. So if you’re feeling out of the loop for the upcoming winter fashion season, look no further than these local fashion blogs to style, inspire and illuminate your wardrobe. The above article was supplied by Bobbi Lombardo. Born and bred in Bunbury, Bobbi is commencing a fashion and writing degree at Curtin University in 2015 and currently is working on her own fashion blog. Not only will this German product protect it from water marks, it provides conditioning and UV protection. Danke schoen!!

Re-fresh

Raindrops keep falling on my boots!

Just like a microderm, your suede will take kindly to a gentle brush. Soft thin copper brushes (made for suede) are the best. They invigorate, clean, renew and refresh. Just like your favourite facial.

What is it with us Aussies that we cringe and shy away from suede? I spent 13 years in winter-white Poland and never once did I see those elegant Polish ladies avoid suede. And we’re talking salt-dusted snow here. For 6 months of the year. So let’s cut to the hide and set you straight on suede.

Repeat! And as you do with all skin-care, it’s a process. Think of it as SPF for your shoes. The more you take them out, the more often you have to apply. But when a spritz takes all of 3 seconds, even time-poor people have no excuse. So there you have it. Beauty 101 for your suede shoes and boots. Here’s to a great winter ladies, full of love for suede. And here’s to simply beautiful skin....

Suede is leather

No really. It’s leather. Leather that has been sanded. And just like all leathers, it is a natural product with a natural resilience.

Protect and conquer! All leather should be protected. Just like your personal skin care, a bit of nourishment goes a very long way. Spritz your suede with Collonil Nubuck and Velours spray before the first wear.

Fabulous Fireplaces Open plan living is all the rage but keeping a spacious home warm in the winter months can be a challenge. So if your home starts to feels draughty and uncomfortable at this time of the year, how about adding a fireplace to create a warm hub in your living space? Remember, it isn’t necessary to have a pre-existing fireplace. It is quite simple to build one into a room while creating the illusion that it has always been there. Fireplaces can also be installed into an alcove or wall cavity that has been cut to size and there are even fireplaces that can be added to a partial dividing wall, ensuring that both sections of the room benefit from its effect. To start off, consider the options as to where a fireplace could be located. Think about how the furniture could be rearranged to ensure the fireplace is the focal point so that both the ambience of your new fire as well as its warmth can be enjoyed. Whether renovating an existing surround or building a new one, look at different materials and take the opportunity to create a fireplace that adds a new dimension to the room to deliver the required impact. As well as the traditional option of a wood or brick surround, research various stone products for interesting textures and colours. Stacked limestone comes in many colours, which helps to add depth to the fireplace as well as interest. Slate is also a popular option, or for a streamlined look, marble creates an elegant, stylish finish. Stone fireplaces also lend themselves well to adding built-in shelving, perfect for candles and decorative pieces, or for simply being left empty. Stone with wood is a winning combination. A wood surround, especially in bright white, black, navy or soft grey, with a stone tile interior and a hearth in a different block

colour, adds contrast and brings life into the fireplace. Pillars can also be added to the mantel if it is deep enough. Salvaged wood can make a fireplace truly individual and it can become a real standout piece in the home. It’s an ideal choice for those with ocean views or for those who like to use a mix of natural materials in the home’s décor. Add a homely feel by building shelving or bookcases with lower cabinets either side of a fireplace. It’s welcoming to see books, photos and other family treasures beside the hearth. Likewise, flanking the fireplace with a pair of comfy armchairs works too. As for the fires themselves, the choice will depend on whether or not your property has a flue through which smoke escapes outside. If the home does not have a flue, and the expense of installing one is prohibitive, choose a fire that burns fuel without creating smoke. Currently, there is a huge range of flueless fires on the market that burn gas or liquid bio fuel, such as bioethanol. These are easily installed into an existing fireplace surround and some can simply be hung on the wall to create a clean, streamlined look. This type of fire does not need a hearth so is an ideal choice for a smaller room. Designs range from traditional styles to ultra-modern and there is often a choice of fuel bed, such as logs, pebbles, charcoal or coal. Some even have a remote control so that the temperature can be altered from an armchair! Spend time carefully researching which type of flueless fire to choose. Some are very costly to run and some do not give out much heat. However, although some fires are predominately installed for decorative purposes, it is surprising how much warmer we can feel by just looking at a brand new fire! 26

Mercedes-Benz GLA

Eagerly awaited compact SUV arrives

With sales in the luxury compact SUV market continuing to boom, it’s no surprise to see the world’s leading luxury car manufacturer eager for a piece of the action. The Mercedes-Benz GLA is the German giant’s answer to the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Range Rover Evoque and whilst it has been marketing

a similar sized model in Europe in left handdrive for a while (the GLK), the all new GLA has a distinct personality all of its own. Aimed primarily at the buyer looking for a versatile, family hatchback-sized model with a slightly higher driving position, the front-wheel drive GLA takes its influences from the recently

Finally, expected later in the year is the ferocious AMG version, the GLA 45. This super-tuned variant is forecast to deliver a huge 265kW of power and 450Nm of torque, powering its way from 0-100km/h in just 4.8 seconds. At around 6cm taller and 12cm longer than its smaller A-Class sibling, there’s plenty to like about the styling achieved from the combination of the extra height and sleek lines. Rear passengers will also be happy with the added legroom and, with a very handy 481 litres of boot space, the GLA offers more storage capacity than many larger SUV’s on the market. Inside, as you would expect from Mercedes, the cabin is awash with luxurious touches, including leather-upholstered, power-adjustable seats that feature four-way electro-pneumatic lumbar support, a distinctive dash with silver sports dials complete with red needles, chrome plated air vents and the now familiar Mercedes Command interface. It’s taken a while for Mercedes-Benz to address this particular segment in the market but it has definitely been worth the wait. A double-layered, dualdensity foam seat offers both riders and passengers a supportive luxurious ride, and twin straight-cut drainpipe silencers provide the perfect soundtrack to the day’s excursion. Avoiding Home Loan Traps

account. Then make it a priority to repay this loan with higher levels of repayments.

By Theo Krinos

Focusing solely on the interest rate

Most people will take on a home loan with the best intention of paying off the debt as quickly as possible. However, these best intentions can often be sabotaged by poor financial decisions made along the way. Here are some common traps to avoid:-

Whilst an important factor, there is far more to consider in a home loan than just the interest rate, particularly when refinancing. In most cases, when moving banks there will be costs involved and theses costs can sometimes be forgotten about during the move. Ensure you work with a reputable broker who will look at the structuring and features of the new loan as well as the headline rate in order to find the most suitable fit.

Failure to manage line of credit loans

While a line of credit can have its benefits, a significant proportion of people who take these out end up getting into strife. Similar to having access to a giant credit card, a line of credit requires not only discipline but also a stable financial position. Usually attracting a higher interest rate and because regular payments are not actually obliged to be made, it’s very easy for those that spend freely to quickly start going backwards financially.

Paying interest only for the life of the loan

For those who want repayment flexibility, an interest only loan can be an effective strategy. This can often be the case for investors looking to quickly build up a portfolio of investment properties. However, at some stage it’s prudent to start paying down both principal and interest to help build up equity. For those who just make interest only payments, at some point the property is going to have to be sold to pay out the debt. Instead, a good strategy is to try to pay out the loan before retirement so the benefits of rental income can be enjoyed. Theo Krinos is Finance Manager at Smartline, Bunbury. Located at 32 Stirling Street, he can be contacted on 9791 4177.

Consolidating short term debt long term Consolidating debt such as credit cards and car loans into a home loan is a popular strategy to ease short term cash flow problems. However, by rolling these debts into a home loan, borrowers are potentially stretching out these payments over the length of the home loan – a strategy that in the long run is going to cost considerably more in interest. Talking Property With Greg Gardiner

Greater Bunbury property market ripe for the picking?! Having taken out top selling office in the state (REIWA listings sold) from over 500 offices for February and March with 124 listings sold, perhaps we could be forgiven for thinking that the boom times have returned to Bunbury?

Same great service, different name!

Well‌ maybe not! But there is no doubt that there are currently extremely positive signs and the market is clearly on the move. It appears that the downturn of the greater Bunbury market that we have experienced for the last 7 years is well and truly over!

9797 4177

So have you been sitting on the fence, wondering whether to buy, sell or invest? Well, take the jump, make the move and prosper. With land prices and building costs on the move and the sub $400K price range moving quickly, all the signs are there for a positive upswing in the market over the next 2 to 3 years.

Theo

Plus, unlike Perth, which has experienced a volatile rental market over the last 18 months, the Bunbury market has remained steady with marginal increases in rental prices and low vacancy rates.

Tax Tips

Structuring, planning and minimising By Phil Di Candilo

I am not evading tax in any way, shape or form. However, of course I am minimizing my tax and if anybody in this country doesn’t minimize their tax they want their heads tested. Governments are not spending it that well that we should be donating extra,’ Kerry Packer. As accountants, we are always expected to help our clients pay less tax. Let’s face it, large, unexpected tax bills are probably our fault. The reality is that an accountancy firm should be helping its clients to make money and build investments to enable a more comfortable lifestyle. However, although paying tax is a fact of life, there are plenty of ways to minimise tax. A good place to start is by taking a close look at your business, i.e. do you have the right business structure in place? There is no one structure that suits all. Businesses have different exposures to risk, there are different dynamics in every family and, of course, you may be in business with a non-family member. The type of structure will be different in each case, however, with the right structure begins the ability to minimise the impact of taxation. Good bookkeeping is the next step. If you have solid financial management and know how the business is trading at any point in time, then you are better placed to plan. GST reporting has helped this. No registered business should now be more than three months behind with its accounts thanks to quarterly reporting. Don’t be afraid, though, to embrace new technology. With the popularity of cloud accounting, consider the change. I can tell you from experience, that the business will have a better relationship with its accountant. Accountants can log in and review transactions, leading to a more accurate set of management reports. Doing this at year end in arrears is too late!

Year-end planning is critical. There are many areas of planning that can be looked at pre 30th June. Once the calendar rolls over, the door closes on most of these. Some simple transactions to consider are deferring income, bringing forward expenses, prepaying expenses and making extra contributions into superannuation, to name a few. If you are reading this article before 30th June, make an appointment to see your accountant now, I can guarantee that your tax saving will be greater than the fee charged for the visit. For those reading this after 30th June, then there is always next year, we know that for sure! Feature Build From the very day the owners moved into the property that pre-dates the current house, they had a real passion for their home. They loved the neighbours, location, orientation and view, and knew that a dream home could be designed to perfectly fit their vision and lifestyle. So, twelve years on, they instructed Busselton architect firm D’Agostino and Luff to set about creating the commanding home it is today. On approaching the property, the most striking features are the architectural elements of offformed concrete, the crisp, sharp rendered projections and glass. An in-ground concrete pool is located in the front yard and cleverly wraps around the side to provide a generous length for swimming laps. The off-formed concrete elements continue internally and are complemented by polished concrete floors, stair treads and risers. There are bespoke elements throughout the home, many being used for the first time in the south west. The suspended slab is embedded with hydronic floor heating, which radiates heat to both the lower and upper living areas. A standout feature is the exceptional timber furniture in every room which was crafted by Dunsborough Woodworks. The home is entered in the 2014 HIA SW Housing Award Custom Built Home category, which will be announced in September. Suzuki DF25A and DF30A

All new four-stroke, lightweight outboards now available

Eighteen months after releasing the DF15A and DF20A, the smallest and lightest outboards in their respective classes, Suzuki has added two new lightweight, compact outboards to its stable, the DF25A and DF30A. Eagerly anticipated by boaties around the globe, particularly ones who regularly haul outboards on and off the transom, these small portable models again offer high-end specification and performance. Based on a completely new in-line, threecylinder block with a displacement of 490cm3, the engines benefit from Suzuki’s revolutionary new generation, battery-less electronic fuel injection system, which is designed to provide quicker starts, smoother operation and better acceleration in all conditions. The outboards also feature an extremely light recoil starter that requires less pull strength, making them considerably easier to use. As with all new products on the water, fuel efficiency is key and the battery-less fuel injection system provided doesn’t disappoint. Using Suzuki’s Lean Burn Fuel Control System, the engines are up to 15% more fuel efficient than the outgoing models. An intelligent fuel management system predicts fuel needs by monitoring engine performance and

operating conditions and, in turn, delivers a leaner fuel/air mixture to the engine. The result is a considerable improvement in fuel economy and lower emissions, all without affecting the performance of the engine. Both new models also come fitted with a newly designed engine cover. Although an aesthetically pleasing addition, the main purpose of the new cover is to provide the direct intake system with a smoother, cooler flow of air. This then boosts the operating efficiency of the engine by reducing temperatures under the engine cover. This, together with a newly designed air cleaner, allows much higher power output from a relatively small displacement. Compact, lightweight and easy to use, Suzuki’s latest outboards are also easy to transport and store. Now available in local dealerships, this latest range once again highlights the remarkable developments that have taken place in recent years within the 4-stroke outboard market. For further information on the range of Suzuki outboards, visit exclusive Bunbury dealer Millard Marine and Motorcycle Centre at 5 Sandridge Road, or call 9721 3033.

Inline Skating A mobile programme that comes to you

As one of the nation’s fastest growing sports, the benefits of learning to skate are plentiful. As well as being great fun, affordable, sociable and accessible, the health benefits are numerous and wide-ranging. Now, thanks to the Be Active Mobile Skate Programme, an initiative of The Rink Bunbury, budding skaters are able to experience the thrill of inline skating right on their very own doorstep. The Rink’s mobile programme is a natural extension of the range of programmes run at its skating centre in Gibbons Road, Bunbury and is available from as far north as Perth to Walpole in the south. To host a class in your area, a smooth, level asphalt surface is required, i.e. a basketball or tennis court, and the area must be swept. During the wetter months, undercover areas are recommended as skating is not permitted in wet conditions. Equipment supplied by The Rink includes the inline skates and all protective gear and tuition is available for beginner, intermediate and advanced skating levels. For multiple class bookings, a 15 minute break between classes is recommended to allow for changeover time and it is also recommended that an adult or teacher is present during classes. The areas covered by the Rink are divided into 4 separate zones each with its own pricing structure. Zone 1 covers the Greater Bunbury area and prices are adjusted to cover distance and staff travel. Classes are also run at The Rink and cost $100 for a 1 hour group of up to 25 children. This price includes equipment and coaching. So, whether you are interested in hosting a school activity, booking a children’s party or simply want to encourage kids in your area to learn to skate in a controlled, professional environment with specialist coaches, simply contact The Rink on 9725 6999 or email therink@iinet.net.au

Meet….Anne Edwards In this issue, we talk with Anne Edwards, a former national champion, who has rediscovered her love of skating at The Rink.

When did you start skating? I started as a 4 year old. My 3 brothers and I lived at the Rink! We all competed and it wasn’t until I was 15 that I decided that I wanted to get good. I said to my coach, Susan Brooks, that I wanted to win nationals and she replied, “OK, well if you do, you will need to practise and then practise some more!’ So I followed her instructions, worked hard and guess what - I won! Then, aged 17, I moved to Perth, trained as an apprentice pastry chef, met my husband and had 2 beautiful children, Blake and Cristin.

What are your memories as a child skating and would you recommend parents bring their children to skating classes? I loved skating as a child. It gave me the freedom to express my creative side and it was something different. I’d definitely recommend bringing children to classes as they get to skate with others at the same level and work through the stages at their own pace.

Why did you come back to skating? My daughter had started and I decided that instead of sitting on the sidelines, I’d put my old skates on and see how it felt. Realising how much I’d missed it, it didn’t take long before I was back doing private lessons and competing again. Then, under the guidance of Susan, I began to learn a new style of skating for me called Solo Dance. This meant no partner, just me, participating at times I could make it or 44

sport & recreation different to teenage bodies and you need to adapt accordingly. Adults need more time to recover, good medical advice and technical coaching or you get to a point when your body says stop. My coach, sports doctor and physio are all able to help me when I have issues that need addressing and I know that as my body changes I can improve my understanding and seek help when needed. After less than 2 years, I’ve learnt a new discipline, improved my health, worked better with my body and fallen back in love with my sport. Even better is that each time my daughter and I go training together, I get great joy from watching her and the other skaters improve, whilst having great fun. On her return, Anne was placed 2nd at National championships 2013 and was placed 3rd at the 2014 Oceania Championships in New Zealand.

whenever my daughter was training. The compulsory side of this programme involves skating to music with turns and steps (think ballroom dancing on skates). Next, the creative side is where we create a character programme to fit my own personal skill level. Timing and musicality are key here as are the variety of turns and tricks. This year’s programme was Roaring 20’s and I had so much fun.

Have you enjoyed teaching and judging? I love teaching as I can be with children and adults who want to learn a sport that I’m passionate about. Judging is new to me but being a coach has helped me see a different side to the sport and understand the judges’ points of view. I’m really enjoying this new journey as it gives me the opportunity to give something back to a sport that has given me so much.

Have you enjoyed competing again? I love competitions, maybe because I have 3 competitive brothers, however, it also gives me the opportunity to improve my skills and reach my goals. The Oceania Championship was an amazing experience being my first ever international competition. I met loads of competitors at the same skill level and was able to reach a goal that I’ve had for a long time.

How has skating encouraged you to get fit and how have you adapted to being older? Since my return to skating, I have not only lost weight but also increased my strength and flexibility to help my competition chances. It’s really improved my overall health. My nutrition awareness has also improved thanks to a new career cooking at Natural Temptation Café. I have learnt so much about how healthy nutritional food can give you the energy to fulfil a busy, demanding lifestyle. Returning to skating, I thought I would return to free-skating, the type I did as a child. I soon discovered that bodies in their 30’s are very 45

Built with the support of the local south west community, who have raised over a third of the construction costs, this state-of-the-art, world class facility will include a 242-seat Cube Theatre, an adaptable conference and event facility, a new commercial kitchen, brand new box office facilities and a first floor bar overlooking the Leschenault Inlet. With the brand new box office now open, the centre is also celebrating its achievement in raising over $450,000 towards the facility’s fit out. This includes a

significant donation from the BREC Club, a successful application to the Chef’s Long Table Lunch and over $80,000 raised to date from the Name a Seat Campaign. With the centre currently attracting over 55,000 people each year, the new facility is expected to significantly increase attendance in coming years, attract new visitors to the city and provide the local community with a wide range of high quality performing artists and events. BREC General Manager Joel McGuiness is understandably upbeat about the development, “I’m so excited by all of the arts and cultural events we have planned for the remainder of the year and into the future, including the brand new Out Of The Box and Into The Cube programme.” Mr McGuiness also said the centre was overwhelmed by the support it had received from the community during the duration of the expansion. 47

Book Review This, the first publication from Kate Zaknic, is a beautifully illustrated book about a young dolphin, Rina. Throughout the story, the octopus guides Rina in discovering new experiences so that she can eventually understand the meaning of love and appreciation. Embrace the new and effective way of ‘looking after yourself from the inside out’. Niobe Gulley is the owner of The Beauty Shop and The Beauty Shop Beauty Room. Two destinations in one location in the Stirling Centre, Bunbury, for all your beauty needs. The Beauty Shop Beauty Room stocks the DMK range of products, the world’s number one salon based dermal skin care range. As the beauty professional’s product of choice, the brand has created one of the most advanced skin care systems on the planet.

Beauty is all about being the best possible version of yourself. Start off by looking after yourself from the inside out with a healthy lifestyle and positive outlook and the effects will radiate out giving an veritable glow to the skin. Throughout life, however, various factors will affect how good skin looks despite all the best intentions a person may have. Ageing and sun damage, for example, can cause fine lines and pigmentation. Hormones, stress, injury, medication, pollution and hot and humid climates can also bring about undesirable skin conditions. There are plenty of products on the market that claim to lessen these skin concerns but many of them are superficial in their effects. This means that even if the skin has been exfoliated and prepared in advance, the product still lies on the top layer of skin and fails to reach down to the working structure of the skin. To attempt to reach the skin’s full potential of beauty, a skincare regime must, therefore, go deeper than many over-the-counter skincare programmes can. If a real difference is to be made to the nature of skin, then products need to work deeper within the structure of the skin itself. Over the years, skincare experts and scientists have found that they can make formulations that mimic the substances and chemistry of the body itself. Cells find themselves in their optimal conditions so they live longer and perform their functions better. They work as they would in a younger body and the skin starts to rebuild itself, the result being younger and healthier looking skin. Of course, a personal consultation is needed to ensure that the right formulation and 51

What is Transfer Messenger Enzyme Therapy? By Jeanette Elliott

Enzymes are present in abundance in our bodies. Living substances that regulate health, they work with certain minerals in the body to form a natural system of antioxidants that fight corrosive free radicals. Where some cosmetic facial treatments may only act on the surface of the skin, uniquely, Transfer Messenger Enzyme Therapy medi-facials work with the skin, and the enzymes within it, to correct imbalances. This leads to a strengthening of the structural integrity of the skin to create a healthy environment in which cells can live and thrive. Transfer Messenger Enzyme Therapy works on getting skin kick-started again. Optimal skin functioning is the key to improving skin conditions and prematurely aged skins. This increases the cell metabolic rate and circulation, bringing a fresh, rich supply of nutrients, and allows the oxygenation of skin cells to aid tissue repair and regeneration. It also activates lymphatic drainage, eliminating toxins, waste material and free radicals. So what can Transfer Messenger Enzyme technique achieve? • age management • a dramatically improved appearance of dull, lifeless, sun damaged skin • the specific targeting of acne, congestion and rosacea • the long term maintenance of skin health • the preparation of skin for corrective dermal therapies At our clinic, our years of experience in skin care allow us to interpret the cause of

imbalances in the skin, thereby offering real, long term results together with the best professional, non-invasive clinical skincare systems and skincare backed by science. In short, our mission is to provide a whole approach to the healing and future health of the skin. I believe that the human body is incredibly resilient and has the ability to repair itself. If you are healthy and strong you can have glowing healthy skin. Treat the inside as well as the outside and stop looking for a quick fix; there is no such thing. Eat well, exercise regularly, use good products and think positively. As a skin professional, I get great satisfaction from helping clients with their skin concerns by firstly chatting and getting to know them before finding out about any concerns. We really can provide life changing solutions. Jeanette Elliott is a Dermal Clinician operating from the Greater Bunbury Medical Centre and works with the body’s own natural restorative and healing abilities to rebuild skin by encouraging its vital internal processes to function optimally. Controlling Arthritis in Dogs By Braden Collins

It is a sad fact that arthritis is an almost inevitable part of the aging process for dogs. Age, weight, breed and injury can all contribute to this debilitating problem. However, there is a great deal that can be done to delay the onset of arthritis and manage it when it has developed. Weight control is one of the single most important considerations for keeping our pets healthy. A recent study has shown that overweight dogs will on average live for 3 years less than a dog of ideal weight. For an animal with a life-span of 10-15 years, this represents a huge difference and can be attributed to increased rates of severe arthritis, various cancers and other conditions, all of which can be caused by carrying extra weight. It is the excessive weight putting a strain on joints that contributes to the development of arthritis as well as affecting how dogs cope with the condition. Exercise is an important consideration for the development and treatment of arthritis. Exercising vigorously when too young (under 12 months of age) can lead to damage within the developing joint, which, in time, will lead

to arthritis. Exercise involving regular twisting and turning, such as chasing balls, can also increase the risk of joint injuries once again potentially leading to arthritis. The main benefit from exercise when dealing with arthritis is that it helps with weight control (although diet plays the biggest role in this area) as well as maintaining muscle strength and joint movement. Low-moderate exercise without rapid turns, such as walking and running, is recommended. Some breeds are also more prone to arthritis. Large breed dogs, dogs with “bendy legs, Retrievers and German Shepherds are among some of the breeds at a higher risk. For these animals, extra care with weight and exercise is important. Fortunately, these days we are in a position to be able to do a lot more to help dogs with arthritis than ever before. At the Bunbury Vet Clinic, we run free weight loss clinics to help dogs lose those extra kilos. Most people whose dogs have lost their excess weight comment on how much happier and livelier the dog is. And, of course, we now know the dog is likely to have a longer life too. 54

animal health

A recent development has been the release of a medication onto the market that can help prevent or at least significantly delay the onset of arthritis. The older form of this medication was considered to be a treatment only. This new form is not only a more effective treatment but also a great preventative. I use this on my dog’s elbow problem and he has had no lameness since we started using it. This medication can be used from when the animal is young if they are at high risk or if they have had a joint injury. When arthritis has set in, we use the WET principle to treat it. W is for weight – we need to get the dog to an ideal weight, E is for exercise – the right amount and type of exercise is important, and T is for treatment – we have a range of treatments available to treat the existing arthritis and slow the progress of the disease. With its idyllic Back Beach location and glorious outlook over the Indian Ocean, Noovoh is fast becoming one of Bunbury’s most popular eating out destinations. So does the food match the surroundings? The Bunbury Life decided to pay a visit. Arriving for lunch on a warm autumn afternoon, and finding our table was positioned to take advantage of the magnificent views, we began by studying the wine list. With a wide selection of predominantly Western Australian wines on offer, the wine list also features a number of local producers from the Geographe region. We decided to choose a bottle of G1-10 Chardonnay from Ferguson Valley-based Willow Bridge Estate - an excellent choice. And so to the food. Served between 11.30am and 3pm daily, the lunch menu cleverly offers plenty of tasty choices to suit all requirements. For those in a hurry, simply pop in and choose from a range of fresh and toasted sandwiches or if dining with kids, the Little Nippers menu is bound to keep the young ones happy. However, for those after a more substantial lunch, there are some real highlights to savour. With the kitchen expertly run by skilled Head Chef Myles Gilgumm and his impressive team, there are certainly no shortage of tempting dishes. Having sampled the team’s unique take on garlic bread, a delicious portion of Homemade flat bread with garlic butter and parsley, we decided to try one of the restaurant’s signature dishes, Fish Cake Beurre Blanc. Served with a lemon and chive beurre blanc, buttered

spinach and topped with a free range poached egg, this fabulous dish not only looks great but is packed full of flavour. The perfect portion size to enjoy over lunch, its popularity is such that diners have been known to visit time and time again. We could see why! Other lunchtime favourites include the generously sized Crispy Tempura Fish and Chips and the wonderful-looking Noovoh Burger and French Fries, both of which were clearly being enjoyed on a regular basis during our visit. The restaurant is also becoming increasingly well known for its delicious, fresh salads. These include a classic Caesar Salad, a Roasted Cauliflower Salad and Smoked Tasmanian Salmon and Prawn Salad amongst others. With the winter menu now available there are also some exciting new additions to try, including a traditional French-style Lyonnaise salad, served with confit of duck and blue cheese, a homemade Beef and Ale Pie, and chicken breast wrapped in prosciutto and served with parsley, gnocchi and provincial vegetables. If you haven’t visited Noovoh yet, we can assure you that you are in for a treat. With its perfect setting, delicious food and impeccable service, it’s an experience not to be missed. Reader Competition

Win a mixed case of wine from Bonking Frog Wines!

Attention, wine lovers! In this issue, one lucky reader has the chance to win a mixed case of wine from Boyanup-based, Bonking Frog Wines. Located on the banks of the Preston River, just 10 minutes from Bunbury, Bonking Frog Wines is a highly successful boutique winery that has been punching above its weight ever since its launch in 2008. Named after a particularly noisy fellow found around the vineyard, the Western Banjo Frog, known for its distinctive call of a loud “BONK”, the winery decided to take its nickname and follow its lead in standing out from the crowd. The sense of fun associated with the name also sums up the winery’s philosophy of making wine to be enjoyed and shared amidst good company and with good food. The winery’s range now includes four styles of Merlot and one white. The Merlot range includes Summer Merlot, a dry Rosé; Winter Merlot, a medium-bodied dry red; Scandal Merlot, an off-dry red designed to be chilled; and the just released 2011 Paterson Reserve Merlot, which is an intense, full bodied wine that has spent 18 months in a mix of aged and new French oak barrels. The Foreigner SSB, a classic blend made from fruit grown in the Margaret River region, completes the line-up. Bonking Frog Wines also now offers short term accommodation, perfect for a relaxing break for couples, in a delightful studio cottage with

decking overlooking the vineyard. To be in the running to win this great prize, all you have to do is answer the simple question below:-

What is the name of the just released Merlot variety? To be entered into the prize draw, either email the answer to this question to editorial@blueskymedia.net.au or post the answer to Bonking Frog Wines Competition, Blue Sky Media, PO Box 600, Mandurah, 6210. Please include a contact telephone number and your address. Closing date for entries is Friday, 1st August, 2014, one entry per person, please. 58

Discovering the Geographe With Jake Atkinson

granted in the last year. The most current release from 52 Stones is the 2012 vintage Mwah Chardonnay, a fantastic example of how a skilled winemaker works. This excellent wine has a sweet butterscotch and honey aroma with a balanced, fresh grapefruit and brioche textured palate. St Aidan has been a local favourite for quite some time now and Chardonnay has been the jewel in its crown. St Aidan makes a range of wines with Chardonnay from dry to sweet even a traditional method sparkling Chardonnay. The 2012 Chardonnay has been one of its most impressive wines to date with a new found level of complexity on previous vintages. The 2012 has an attractive caramelised citrus and lemon drop nose and a rich palate of confit oranges, vanilla bean, brûlée texture and subtleties of white flowers popping up throughout the palate. If big bold Chardonnay is your thing, then it is hard to look past Ferguson Hart Estate’s Van Leeuwen Block Chardonnay, and Merv Hart kindly dropped in a bottle of his 2013 offering recently so we could have a look. The nose was a full whack of stone fruit and baking spices with a rich broad texture on the palate from mineral laden bacon fat to fresh lime zestiness. This wine has great cellaring potential and will be great in years to come! Next time you find yourself heading to the Ferguson, do yourself a favour and think, Chardonnay! Jake Atkinson is Sommelier at Mojo’s Restaurant, Victoria Street, Bunbury.

Take a look at the Geographe wine region and you will find a huge variety of wine styles available to enjoy, with each sub-region now really starting to find its niche. A good example of this is to see how one particular variety has particularly flourished in the Ferguson Valley - Chardonnay. There have been some outstanding examples of Chardonnay coming from the Ferguson in the last few years. And, what is even more encouraging is that there hasn’t been just one producer standing head and shoulders above any other. There is a group of producers making world class wines to a very high level. 52 Stones is the new kid on the block. Although the vineyard has been in the ground since 1998, a producers’ license has only been 60
