UNCONFORM. THE FIRST EVER BMW X4 AT AUTO CLASSIC AND WESTCOAST BMW.
Unconventional. Unexpected. Unafraid. The first ever BMW X4 is undeniably different. Its distinctive coupé silhouette is unique in its own right, while its broad stance, distinguished kidney grille and large air inlets underline its remarkable sporting potential. A potential that’s longing to be unleashed with formidable BMW TwinPower Turbo Engines and innovative ConnectedDrive technologies. The first ever BMW X4 doesn’t redefine what a car should be. Instead, challenges what it could be. It’s time to unconform. Visit Auto Classic or Westcoast BMW to arrange a test-drive today.

extremely well with tonal layering. Camel, in particular, will have a strong place in men’s fashion over the coming months. If it’s not quite cold enough yet outside for coats, then simply add a scarf and make sure it’s big. Look out for a chunky knit or a blanket scarf to loosely wrap over a tailored shirt and jacket. Separates, such as pants, sweatshirts and tops, will still be heavily influenced by the sportswear scene. Crank the look up a notch by choosing pieces in luxurious fabrics and pristine finishes.
Effortless glamour!
Our summer wardrobe will still be getting lots of wear with the warm autumn weather, however, there are plenty of tempting new trends now emerging on the rails for the new season. Transitioning to cooler days is going to be a glamorous affair! Creating a chic and simple silhouette are cropped wide culottes. They are the pant of the season, bringing to mind images of Katharine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall, and can be an easier piece to carry off than imagined. Firstly, look for a soft fabric as the culottes will fall better and create a more flattering line. Make sure the culottes end at the slimmest part of the ankle and wear heels; only those blessed with very long legs can opt for the flats and brogues seen on the runways. On top, a cropped sweater or jacket exposes the waist and balances out the weight of the trousers. Try adding a box clutch too. A relaxed and sophisticated combination for autumn is set to be matching a luxurious sweater in a fine knit with a skirt that would normally be saved for the evening. Short, below the knee or long and slimline to the floor, in a beautifully soft fabric, it’s understated and refined and will feel wonderfully indulgent. Sweaters will also work well in a cable or chunky style, teamed with a pretty feminine skirt, and flats, such as brogues, look just as good as heels or tall skinny ankle boots. The palette for autumn centres on navy, which is less harsh and more forgiving to complexions than black, complemented by neutrals, such as soft greys, camel, nude and white. Navy and camel are also colours for men to be seen in this autumn, as well as indigo, khaki and neutrals. They are all organic and work

The
Greta Diaries HERO ITEMS Dearest ones, Greta from ShoeBeDoo here to impart my most humblest words of wisdom on Hero Items - those wardrobe staples deeply rooted in the classics that have the power to make you feel good - extra curves on the hips or not!
Stunning shoes, gorgeous bags, sublime service … The art of looking amazing is at ShoeBeDoo …
Kick It ...
Fashion sneakers are In, baby! Capital I. Not just for the gym, lace-up flats are our new found heroes. Comfy, cool and casual (plus, for those with problem feet, boy, they hide a multitude of foot sins!), I love wearing a pair of Portuguese soft leather Softinos in dove grey with my fave leather jacket and knee length grey dress. Easy peasy...
Print It ...
Thankfully, you don’t have to sacrifice style when you are rocking a pair of ballet flats. Update your hero ballerina for autumn with a printed pair. Metallic black overlaid with printed florals, care of Django & Juliette, will have your tooties in foot heaven, while pointed flats in rich burgundy check from Mollini beg to be taken out on a high street spin. Burberry trench and striped jumper optional...
Point It ...
Was that a cringe, I hear? Mais non, cherie, pointed pumps are not just for the slim of foot or the Beckhams of last names. Sure, a high heel gobsmackingly gorgeous rhinestone encrusted beauty from Steve Madden (can anyone say hero bridal shoe??) might not be the go-to favourite for those of wider feet. However, the masters of shoe crafters, Peter Kaiser of Germany, make these deliciously deceiving black patent points that last a lifetime. Sleek in silhouette, slender in stiletto heel and absolutely stunning, this is not a hero shoe. This is a heroine. Particularly in blood red ... ooh la laaaa...
Downsize It ...
Stylish, colourful and well-crafted mini-bags are simply liberating! Cross bodies have always been heroes for those of the hands-free/beware-of-thegypsies travelling set, but the calibre of soft wash teal mini’s from Guess, multipurpose Melbourne traveller bags from b.sirius, and soft leather body moulding Pierre Cardin flat day bags will have you swapping out your totes and revelling in the freedom of the less is more. Liberté!!! Can’t wait to own your own heroes? Simply follow me on Facebook (ShoeBeDoo.Bunbury. Dunsborough) and Instagram (shoebedooshoes) to be in the everyday know. As Yves Saint Laurent stated, “Fashions fade, style is eternal.”

Transform Your Home in 2015 Is 2015 the year you finally give your home that much needed facelift? Looking to freshen up your main living areas or bedrooms but
don’t know how to get started? Take a look at these ideas for inspiration and get to work transforming your space.
Paint The cheapest way (if you do the labour yourself ) to give your home a makeover is to add a new coat of paint to the walls. Neutrals provide universal appeal as they stylishly brighten up spaces, are inoffensive and are easily compatible with most soft furnishings. The tonal painting of alcoves, behind open shelving, indented walls and stairwells adds extra depth and interest.
Flooring Consider replacing old tiles with discoloured grouting or patchy outdated carpet with new flooring, or polish up existing floorboards. Try to keep to the same flooring for open plan areas to get that feeling of spaciousness and flow. Vinyl planking is a popular choice currently for the home offering plenty of design options together with a hard wearing solution for families. The same goes for individual rooms, such as 24
home & garden bathrooms and bedrooms, be consistent with flooring. Ensure bathrooms share the same tiles and bedrooms the same carpet (children’s rooms may be exempt!).
Fabric Overhaul soft furnishings and accessories and rethink the accent colours that work in your home. Eclectic choices of favourite colours and patterns can feel cosy and homely. If you like consistency and for rooms to flow from one to another, then pick just two or three colours that can be layered within varying tones, patterns and textures. Look at colour wheels online to find combinations of colours that work well together. For example, Marsala, the Pantone Colour of 2015, is a rich earthy red that is perfect with teal and aqua tones.
Lighting Get rid of your old fashioned pendants and replace them with indirect lighting for a more

subtle and warmer ambience. Replace overly bright down lights with those that can be adjusted with dimmer switches. Think about where you need sufficient light to read or work and find a table or floor lamp that not only does the job but also adds a feature to the room. With the cooler months approaching, let in more natural light. Replace old shabby curtains with the fresh clean lines of shutters or venetian blinds in a light neutral colour.
Make Use of Space Open plan living is all the rage but it can mean that certain parts of the house become unused walk-through areas. Make use of nooks and crannies by putting up shelves or add a door or plasterboard wall to areas of dead space to create a study or children’s playroom. This allows your home to adapt according to its changing needs whilst an extra room can also add value.

Mercedes-Benz and AMG A-Class and GLA join exclusive club
AMG! Three letters that stir the senses and quicken the pulses of all motoring enthusiasts. Founded in 1967 as an independent racing and tuning business specialising in Mercedes cars, almost 50 years on, Mercedes-AMG employs over 600 people, has an extensive product range with customers all over the world, and an unsurpassed reputation for producing exclusive high–performance cars. Over the years, pretty much every MercedesBenz model has been given the famous AMG treatment and in the current Mercedes-Benz line-up, all models (except the B-Class) have an AMG version. This in itself tells an interesting story. These days, AMG is not only just about fitting muscular V8’s into the larger cars in the range, it now offers up AMG versions in the smaller 4-cylinder models.
A45 AMG (overseas model)
Capping off the list of features on the A45 AMG, the cabin features leather performance seats, Alcantara steering wheel, Key-less Go, Mercedes control system and Harman Kardon stereo. On the outside, the high specification includes 19-inch alloys, intelligent lights, a glass panoramic sunroof and metallic paint. Optional extras include black wheels, body kit and performance suspension.
A45 AMG The A45 AMG is the jewel in the crown of the A-Class line-up. Fitted with a 2.0L 4-cyclinder turbo-charged engine, this immensely powerful power plant, the world’s most powerful 4-cylinder production engine, delivers an astonishing 265kW of power and 450Nm of torque at 2250rpm. So potent is it that it actually outperforms the supercharged 3.2L V6 fitted to the C32 AMG a decade ago. Capable of achieving 0-100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds and a blistering top speed of 270 km/h, fuel economy despite this level of performance still clocks in at around 6.9 litres per 100km. This is partly due to the idle-stop system, a feature that turns off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and restarts it when the driver lifts his or her foot from the brake. The car also features the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission technology adapted from the SLS AMG together with a part-time 4-wheel drive system that transfers up to 50 per cent of the power to the rear wheels if slip is detected.
GLA45 AMG Launched in Australia in early 2014 and occupying the same market segment as the Audi Q3 and Range Rover Evoque, the GLA line-up is now complete with the launch of the GLA45 AMG. This pocket rocket of an SUV comes fitted with the same 2.0L 4-cyclinder turbo-charged engine as the A45 AMG and blasts its way from 0-100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. With an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h, much like the A45 AMG, high performance doesn’t mean high petrol costs with average consumption at 7.6L per 100km. Again, much like its smaller sibling, the GLA45 AMG features the seven-speed dual clutch 30
on the road transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive system. Key-less Go, 20 inch alloys, glass panoramic sunroof, leather sports seats and Mercedes control system, featuring satnav and Harman Kardon stereo, are just some of the many standard features on offer. It also comes with a Racestart launch control, guaranteed to give the neighbours an early morning alarm call when leaving for work! And of course, being an SUV, extra space in the cabin means added practicality through improved rear seat space and headroom. The added space also translates into extra boot capacity with 1235 litres of storage space available with the rear seats folded flat. Super-fast and super-stylish, the A45 AMG and GLA45 AMG are classic examples of how Mercedes-Benz and AMG have revolutionised the 4-cylinder performance category. Catch them if you can! For further information on the Mercedes Benz AMG range, contact Mercedes-Benz Bunbury on 9721 8199.

BMW X4
Big selling X-Series line-up expanded
It was just over fifteen years ago that BMW introduced the world to the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) with the launch of the X5. Three years later saw the launch of the smaller X3 and in 2009, both the entry level X1 and new Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) model, the X6, were added to the burgeoning X family range. With the worldwide car buyers’ seemingly insatiable appetite for luxury crossover vehicles, the X range has again been beefed up with the launch of the X4. Size-wise, it slots into the line-up between its trendsetting X3 and X5 siblings, the X4, however, has much more in common with the X6 with its combination of SUV capabilities and coupé-style design. Indeed, BMW describes the X4 as the world’s first premium mid-sized SAC. So why does BMW need the X4? Well, there’s no doubt the extraordinary success of the X6 is a compelling reason. For a vehicle that was initially seen as a niche spin-off from the X5, the X6 has now sold in excess of 250,000 units worldwide, spawning in its wake a host of mid-sized imitators including, amongst others, the Range Rover Evoque and Porsche Macan; cars that the X4 will directly compete with head-on. Displaying sporting characteristics very much of its own, in the flesh the X4 boasts an impressive visual presence on the road. Viewed front-on, its large air intakes and signature BMW twin headlights and fog lamps will certainly get the car plenty of admiring glances from rear-view mirrors. Side-on it scores highly as well with its swooping curved roofline and enlarged rear wheel arches. Yes, the roofline does slope away but the car still provides generous levels of space for up to 5 adults. Aside from the obvious visual differences, it’s the seating position in the X4 that is its 32

most distinguishable feature from the similar sized X3. Even with a noticeably higher ride height than an average performance car, at 20mm lower than the X3 in the front seats and 28mm in the back, the car feels markedly closer to the tarmac. Much like the X6, it’s an exciting combination of family practicality and the sporting elegance of a classic coupé. On the road, performance levels more than match expectations. With a choice of 3 petrol engines and 3 diesel units, ranging in output from 135kW/184hp to 230kW/313hp, the flagship petrol option, the BMW X4 xDrive35i, delivers an agreeable peak torque of 400Nm whilst sprinting from 0-100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds. Meanwhile, the top of the range diesel option with its 6-cyclinder 3.0L in-line engine offers even more torque at 630Nm, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in a blistering 5.2 seconds while still maintaining a combined cycle fuel consumption of just 6 litres per 100kms. Stylish, engaging and with class-leading fuel consumption and emission figures, the X4 fills an important gap in BMW’s awardwinning range. Expect to see plenty on the roads. Vespa GTS 300
The legacy lives on!
With its links to the British mod movement, appearance in the feature film, Roman Holiday and countless famous movie star owners, the Vespa scooter became one of the most stylish and sought after modes of transport in the second half of the twentieth century. Manufactured by Piaggio and located in Italy’s Tuscany region, 70 years on from the launch of the very first model, Vespa is today one of seven companies within a group that offers an extensive range of scooters from 50cc to 500cc to the Australian market. Using a unique, highly recognisable metalbodied design and enclosed horizontallymounted engine, much of the design ethics that turned Vespa into a worldwide phenomenon are still incorporated into the current models. And, with an impressive choice of over 10 separate scooters in the Vespa collection, Piaggio’s clever fusion of modern technology with classic retro styling has insured an ever expanding customer base. The GTS 300, a recent addition to the Vespa range, is
the latest incarnation of the famous PX, a scooter that sold in excess of 3 million units worldwide. Fitted with a 278cc liquid-cooled, single cylinder four-stroke engine delivering 21hp @7500rpm, it not only has more power than previous models but also comes fitted with a range of all-new high-tech features. These include traction control, perfect for improving peace of mind on slippery roads, and ABS, allowing for safer breaking in all conditions. Visually, it’s as chic and svelte as ever with new LED rear lights and LED front running lights added. There’s also an elegantly re-worked dash and lockable glove box with USB port. An optional extra USB port allows for smartphones to be used as trip computers, incorporating satnav, fuel consumption and battery voltage readings. Other features include a chrome rear grab rail, blacked out trim, under-seat storage and two tone wheels. Affordable, cool and incredibly versatile, the GTS 300 is another worthy addition to the Vespa success story. Setting Priorities for 2015 By Theo Krinos
The start of a new year often brings new priorities and the setting of new goals, and in 2015, it seems more and more Australians are focusing on their finances. A recent survey by NAB of its customers has concluded that financial independence and financial responsibility are set to feature highly on many people’s agendas this year. Customers are seeking to ensure a more prosperous future and a key cornerstone of their plans is to pay off their home loans as soon as possible. This proved to be particularly true of the 30 to 49 year old age bracket that strongly recognised the long term benefits in becoming mortgage free. Of all those questioned by the bank, 31 per cent revealed that they would like to save more money in 2015, 24 per cent planned on making fewer impulse purchases, while 18 per cent were clear about wanting to stick to a stricter budget. Western Australians, interestingly, were seen to be the most impulsive with 22 per cent not having set any financial resolutions, instead, they seemed to prefer living life for the moment and represent a figure twice the amount of other states.
Whatever your financial goals are for 2015, paying down a mortgage as quickly as possible is a highly prudent strategy. With interest accruing on home loans from day one of the drawdown, extra payments to the loan can drastically reduce the overall interest paid and significantly reduce the term of the loan. Strategies to pay down the loan faster can include setting up fortnightly payments instead of monthly payments, keeping payment amounts the same when interest rate cuts are passed on by the lender and using offset accounts for redirecting lump sums, such as tax rebates or bonuses. Plus, be sure to engage the services of a qualified mortgage broker to ensure you are receiving the best available deal in the market. Whatever your financial goals are this year, make 2015 the year when you start to implement a clear strategy and make serious inroads into your largest debt. With many real estate experts predicting a softening of the Perth market and a difficult rental market, Bunbury is quite the opposite. Here, prices are predicted to rise with a steady rental market, giving peace of mind to investors. For many, by using existing equity in the home, the availability of full borrowing on an investment property will mean entry into the market with little input needed from the back pocket.

So You Want to Set Up a Self-Managed Super Fund? By Phil Di Candilo
The establishment of a SMSF can be an attractive option for many individuals. However, many new members and trustees are not always aware of what is involved in the establishment and maintenance of a SMSF. A key early decision in the establishment of the fund is the choice of trustee. Generally, all members need to be trustees of the fund. On establishment, the members have the option of being trustees individually or as directors of a company that acts as trustee. SMSF trustees are ultimately responsible for the operation and compliance of the SMSF with the relevant laws. As such, all fund trustees need to be conscious of what is happening with the fund as they may be liable for penalties in the future. After the fund is established, there will generally be benefits rolled over from another fund or amounts (including assets) contributed to the fund by the members. The fund trustee is required to formulate an investment strategy. This outlines how the fund will invest its assets, taking into consideration matters such as diversification of investments, risk and return, the ability to pay benefits, the needs of the members and whether insurance should be held for the members of the fund. When rolling benefits from one fund to another, consideration needs to be given to the potential loss of any insurance benefits in the existing fund and whether this should be replaced in the SMSF. When determining where the fund assets are to be invested, the fund trustee needs to consider the types of investment available. Many funds invest more traditionally in shares, term deposits, managed funds and property. One of the key attractions of a SMSF for many members is the fact that it is self-managed and
the members are in control of their investment decisions. This allows a SMSF to be nimble and able to move quickly on any changes in investment strategy or circumstances. However, many trustees do not have the skills to deal with all of the management issues of the fund and will need to engage professionals at some point to assist in its management. Many SMSF members establish a fund without fully considering the issues that apply to their own circumstances. Throughout the lifecycle of the fund, from establishment to winding up, the members need to consider if the fund is appropriate for what they are aiming to achieve and, where necessary, engage professional advice to determine the best course of action. Ultimately, every individual’s circumstances are different and they need to be considered when determining if the SMSF is right for them. Boyd Oakes of Boyd Design
In this issue, we talk to Boyd Oakes, owner of Mandurah-based Boyd Design, one of the south west’s fastest growing building design companies. How long have you been designing homes and how did you get started? Boyd Design was established in 1999 with its primary focus being the design of landscapes and swimming pools. When alfresco areas gained popularity, I added these to our scope of services. This expanded into home additions and, one day, I was asked to design a new home. The rest is history. It’s been an amazing journey. What do you think are the secrets to your company’s success? There are a number of factors that set us apart. Having experience with swimming pool and landscape design means we can deliver the complete picture, not just the house. Open, honest communication and my genuine passion in ensuring my clients are doing the right thing by themselves proves invaluable. Does designing homes in the south west present any unique challenges? Every home presents a unique set of challenges no matter where it is. We’ve recently completed a design in Hastie Street, Bunbury. The site was practically a sand dune - very steep. The challenge here was to reduce the cost and impact of the retaining walls through clever design. Do you have any particular styles that you favour? Just one; the style my clients like! Home design is my passion so I love all styles. No matter what style my clients favour, we work tirelessly to deliver the result they seek. As is evident on our website, there’s no “Boyd” style per se. However, I often hear people say our design
style is unique, which is great. Do you have a favourite project that you have worked on? At the risk of sounding like a politician, no, I love them all. It’s all about the challenge to deliver a perfect result for our clients. There’s no better reward than the positive feedback I receive from them, that’s what it’s all about for me. From 250K through to millions in value, it’s the challenge I love. What will be the future trends in building design? Good question. Currently the ‘Hamptons’ style is popular, a style which is hundreds of years old! For the most part, I believe people follow the trend of the day, which has the associated risk of being outdated quickly. Cost effective, energy efficient design is also a hot topic. Build what you love, I say. How do you relax away from the business? Family does it for me. I love spending time with my favourite people. No matter how stressed I am, how tired I may be, it’s my family who eases the tension and lets me forget about the business for a short while every day. My adorable supportive wife and amazing kids fill me with absolute joy. For further information on designing your home with Boyd Design, Google ‘Boyd Design Mandurah’. 42

Business Tips With Bartercard South West
There are many different ways to create a successful business and many different styles in which to do this. However, there are certain proven approaches worth adhering to. Every day, Bartercard works with its members (now numbering over 20,000) to help improve their businesses. Here’s what some of the most successful ones are doing.
Outsource Being an expert in your field allows you to offer a higher level of service to customers, but you don’t need to be an expert in every aspect of the business. Hire expertise in areas where you are not as skilled so that you can focus on what you truly do best.
Learn from mistakes We all make mistakes and even the most successful entrepreneurs in the world have admitted to their shortcomings. If a new product or service hasn’t worked the way it was envisioned, put it down to experience and use that experience to take the business in a better direction.
Commit to future-proofing your business Finding the time to plan for the future allows you to take stock of what has worked and what hasn’t. This helps you stay on track with your business plan or adjust goals accordingly. Planning ahead will help you stay agile when unexpected events hit.

Schoolwork and homework? By Louise Clark
When my older sister was getting lots of homework and I was just getting a few maths questions and my usual reading books, I felt like I was missing out so I set about creating my own project to complete. I must have been 8 years old and I decided to research how the coffee my mum drank found its way from the bean to her mug. I loved reading, writing, drawing pictures and making things so it didn’t feel like a chore at all; it was fun. My ‘homemade’ homework also meant something to me because I thought it served a purpose as it would be interesting for people to read. Fun and useful, are these the aspects that are sometimes missing from homework these days? Many parents, teachers and, of course, children disagree with the whole concept of homework. Their argument is that the school day is already packed with enough learning and that time at home should be spent playing and simply being children. Homework activities may appear irrelevant, such as increasingly tricky spelling words to memorise when the child misspells simple high frequency words on a daily basis, or perhaps tasks are overly complicated and require too much parental input. And sometimes, homework can simply take too much time to complete, be too boring and be the cause of conflict between parents and their children. So why have homework? Homework is intended to reinforce what has been learnt at school. It can also build on what
has been learnt so that children can take an idea further or apply it to a new situation. Open-ended tasks can give children the opportunity to extend themselves as they set their own limits. And then there is the most popular of arguments for homework in that it helps to foster self-discipline, time management skills and a sound work ethic. I understand that there is a need for homework that is meaningful. If a child does not understand why a task is useful to them, then interest and motivation is quickly lost. It should be tailored and relevant to how the class and individual children have understood learning objectives or to what is going on currently in the world around them. And homework need not be a daily activity nor should it dominate children’s free-time. At home, children need space and time to unwind and play, and in doing so they are actually discovering, creating, enjoying and learning vital developmental and social skills that homework simply cannot teach them. Louise Clark has studied and taught across all age groups in the British and Australian schooling and college systems.

The Arts in Education
By Mathilda Joubert
It is generally accepted that the three Rs, (reading, writing and arithmetic) play an important role in children’s education but what about the arts? There are now five arts subjects included in the new Australian Curriculum:dance, drama, media arts, music and visual art. As schools around the country are grappling with implementing the Australian Curriculum, let’s consider the benefits of a rich and varied arts education to children’s lives. Regular participation in the arts, whether at home, school or through clubs, can make a significant, distinctive and in some respects unique contribution to the development of 1 children. There is a significant body of research that links participation in the arts with improved academic success in other areas, e.g. links have been proven between:-
scope of their interests, expressing themselves better, learning how to work with others, becoming more open minded, learning selforganisation, and relieving anger and stress. Most wanted more involvement in the arts both at school and in their leisure time. Through the arts, children get the opportunity to experiment, discover, explore, create, feel, play and learn. This is important work for children – and the earlier they start, the better. Arts education has a vital role to play in the development of every child and no child can develop fully without it. A rich and varied arts curriculum should therefore be part of the basic entitlement of all school going children. What pupils and teachers say about the arts:“People are looking at you, sometimes they are even paying to see you, it is just amazing. You see all those eyes upon you and you are thinking you should be nervous but you are not because you know what you are doing and you just get on with it. It is great.” (Year 7) “It has made me more aware of things, like more aware of things I can do, things now I know I can do when before I did not really think I could do. … So it has helped me understand what I am capable of.” (Year 9) “So that at the end of a production, they are crying, a 17-year-old lad is crying, because something he knows is wonderful in his life, a major part in a school production, has ended on the Saturday night. Now that sort of effect on someone has got to be life-changing and that is an outcome that I would want.” (Principal)

Don’t just take my word for it, what do young people 2 themselves say? Researchers from England recently interviewed more than 700 young people, aged from 14 to 24, and found that almost two-thirds affirmed the beneficial effect of involvement in the arts. They identified a range of specific benefits from their involvement with the arts, including meeting people and making friends, broadening the

Book Review Chill Out
Brian Gaull
With a long held desire to undertake scientific research in Antarctica, Brian Gaull finally realises his dream when he arrives at Mawson Station in his role as a geophysicist. The memoirs of his time in this exceptionally remote part of the world are laid out with impressive detail in Chill Out and are, quite simply, awe inspiring. In total, Gaull spent sixteen months away from his family, three months longer than originally intended. With underlying problems in his marriage, the reader will often feel incredulous that Gaull made the decision to leave his two young sons for such a large chunk of time, however, as the memoirs progress, it is clear that this dilemma was never resolved in the author’s mind and was a source of constant anxiety.

Bacteria is Not a Dirty Word Getting your head (and gut) around bacteria By Raquel Powley
Over 2000 years ago, Hippocrates (the father of modern medicine) said, “All disease begins in the gut.” Now, I’m not sure what has happened in between but finally it appears the health revolution is catching up, overtaking the pharmaceutical giants and their massive marketing machines. The human gut contains 10 times more bacteria than all the human cells in the entire body, 100 trillion to be exact, with over 400 diverse bacterial species. The gut flora (bacteria) promotes normal gastrointestinal function, protection from infection, regulates metabolism and comprises more than 75% of our immune system. An imbalance in gut flora has been linked to diseases such as autism, depression, autoimmune conditions, inflammatory bowel disease and Type 1 diabetes. Having recently purchased a myriad of do-it-yourself concoctions as Christmas presents for my family, I have come to the conclusion that with all of the products available there are plenty available that can be easily incorporated into a diet in order to achieve the right balance in our gut.
make at home by using cancer fighting cruciferous vegetables, like cabbage, radish and cucumber.
Bone Broth This contains minerals in a form the body can absorb easily – calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur and trace minerals. The broken down cartilage and tendons contain chondroitin sulphates and glucosamine. My cheat way is to buy a free range cooked chook, take all the meat off (remove the stuffing) and boil the bones for around 2 hours. I don’t add any other ingredients to this. Strain when cool and freeze in zip lock bags for use in soups, gravy, stews etc. Tempeh A fungus rhizopus oligosporus is added to partially cooked soybeans. This produces a type of antibiotic that is heat and pH resistant and very effective against certain bacteria, including staphylococcus aureus, which can cause pneumonia and sepsis. Tempeh is available in the supermarket.
Kefir Derived from a fermentation process involving dairy and water-based forms, the traditional method dating back 1000 years used milk. Kefir is a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast, a matrix of proteins, lipids and sugars that feed on lactose (milk sugar). The various types of beneficial microbiota, B vitamins, minerals, probiotics and a variety of other unique compounds contained in kefir make it one of the most potent probiotic foods available. Current research is being conducted that is showing weight loss benefits also.
Fruit and Vegetables Other gut flora foods are possibly already in your diet. Blueberries, cabbage, bok choy, cress and broccoli, bananas, Jerusalem artichokes and beans or legumes. There are other beneficial foods that I haven’t listed here and I encourage you to do your own research and empower yourself….and your gut. Best of health!

address the symptoms and dermal therapies can assist with the management of this type of acne in consultation with a doctor.
Post-Acne Scarring For those who have experienced moderate to severe acne, many will have some degree of post-acne scarring. The surrounding skin may fail to produce adequate collagen, the skin’s main structural protein, leaving a depression in the skin. This type of scarring includes pitted pigmented scarring, leaving a brownish/ purplish appearance and ice pick scarring with deep enlarged pores. The treatment of post-acne scarring involves resurfacing and stimulating collagen growth. Chemical peels, skin needling and ablative fractional radio frequency will provide significant results. The type of treatment selected is based on the extent of the scarring and the patient’s objectives. We also take into account skin type, recovery time and, of course, the patient’s budget. Jeanette Elliott is a dermal clinician who has many years’ experience in helping patients to understand their skin and the conditions that may affect it, providing realistic expectations of the results that can be achieved. She is a member of both the Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians and the Aesthetics Practitioners Advisory Network and is actively involved in the dermal therapy professional community via her role as a student assessor within the The Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science. Located at the Greater Bunbury Medical Centre, call her on 9791 7938 for a free no obligation consultation.
Many of us will have been affected by acne at some point in our lives, the majority of us as an adolescent. However, for some, acne can be a skin condition that lingers long into adulthood. Classed as a cosmetic skin concern or a dermatological skin disease, depending on the severity, acne is caused by an inflammatory response to the blockage of sebaceous glands. These glands are located at the base of each hair follicle below the skin’s surface and secrete sebum, an oily substance, onto the surface of the skin to lubricate it. They are a vital part of the skin’s natural moisturising process. Three main factors lead to the formation of acne. Firstly, sebum from the sebaceous gland binds together dead skin cells and debris from the skin’s surface, causing a blockage. This creates a fertile environment for bacteria to grow. Secondly, acne bacteria irritate the follicle and the oil gland causing inflammation and thirdly, abnormal skin sheds within the follicle. One or all three of these factors may influence the development of acne and it is important during treatment to address all three. Once acne forms, it can take on several different forms, including blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts. Cysts lie deep within the skin and can be unsightly, large and painful with significant inflammation. Often a cyst can become so large that it causes a rupture, spilling its contents into the surrounding tissue deep within the skin. A cyst can often result in post-acne scarring.
Acne Grading Acne is graded from 1 to 4, depending on the severity of the condition. Grades 1 and 2 generally involve minimal inflammation, however, grades 3 and 4 will generally have moderate to severe inflammation with pustular, nodular, and cystic acne prevalent. The cosmetic treatment of non-inflammatory acne uses dermal therapies that address the three factors whereas therapeutic treatment of grades 3 and 4 should be provided by a medical doctor or dermatologist. Topical and/or oral treatments will be prescribed to 54

Beauty Talk with Niobe Gulley
Do you regularly cleanse your skin? Well, even if you do, you may be undermining your beauty routine simply by using an inappropriate cleanser or cleansing routine. Choosing the wrong cleanser can lead to premature aging of the skin as well as other problems, such as irritation and breakouts. It can even compromise the effectiveness of subsequent products, such as serums and moisturisers. To achieve a radiant and fresh complexion, a sound cleansing routine is essential and if you are unsure about which product is right for your skin, talk to a skincare professional who will be able to advise on a suitable solution. Home to a wide range of cleansers, EstĂŠe Lauder advises to wash hands before getting started so that any germs are not transferred to the face. Use only warm water (water too hot will cause dryness) and then lightly massage the cleanser into the skin. Remember to finish with a splash of cool water to help to tighten pores and gently pat dry with a clean towel. Follow up right away with toner, serum and moisturiser. A new product from Clinique adds another dimension to the cleansing routine in the form of its Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush. Clinique describes the brush as a more effective, very gentle way to cleanse the face through the use of sonic movement. Powered by rechargeable batteries, the brush even turns itself off after 30 seconds. Any cleanser can be used with the brush but Clinique recommends its Foaming Sonic Facial Soap, designed to suit all skin types. This, or your chosen cleanser, should be applied to moistened skin or even straight onto the dampened head of the brush. This
oval-shaped brush is made up of extremely soft white bristles for the cheeks and firmer green bristles that help in cleansing the T-zone and hairline. The result is a deeper and more effective clean than the traditional hand washing of faces. Skin should appear much more radiant and smooth and have an increased receptiveness to serums and moisturisers. Whichever cleanser and cleansing routine you choose, make sure it’s the best for your skin by discussing your needs and concerns with a qualified skincare professional, and then stick to it! Niobe Gulley is the owner of The Beauty Shop and The Beauty Shop Beauty Room. Two destinations in one location in the Stirling Centre, Bunbury, for all your beauty needs.

My Favourite Dish
By Steven Bowry Head Chef, Unwind on Symmons
Scallops, Black Pudding, Pea Purée and Chilli Oil Part of the new tapas menu now available at Unwind on Symmons, this delicious dish was first added to our menu in December of last year. One of my favourite combinations of tapas, the fusion of the sweetness of the scallops, the richness of the creamy pea purée, the saltiness of the black pudding and the kick of the chilli oil creates a unique culinary experience. It’s also perfectly accompanied with a nice glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. Of course, black pudding with its blend of onions, pork fat, oatmeal, flavourings and blood (usually from a pig) has always held a slight stigma for some people. However, in my experience, I have found that customers that tell me that they don’t like black pudding are normally the ones that haven’t tried it. In fact, ever since we added the dish to our menu, we have had nothing but positive feedback with many diners coming back to try it again. Using Western Australian black pudding and locally sourced scallops, the dish’s other main element, the pea purée, is made from a combination of cream, leeks, snap frozen peas and seasoned with salt and pepper. The
ingredients are then cooked together slowly before being blended into a purée. Priced at $19, why not come and see what all the fuss is about? The above dish is available at Unwind on Symmons, inside the Lord Forrest Hotel, 20 Symmons Street. Call 9726 5777 to make a reservation. 58

food & wine they have also been used to show ownership to a master as in the case of the Romans tattooing their slaves. Many gangs have a common tattoo to signify their membership and brotherhood. There are still countries, such as Japan, that don’t allow people with tattoos into bathhouses because of the association with the Japanese mafia. Women in Thailand sporting a tattoo, however, are seen as modern women as traditionally only Thai men were allowed to have tattoos. In years gone by in our western culture, it was common to categorise individuals who wore tattoos. Today though, every second man, woman either professional or not seems to have a body adornment either tucked away or proudly displayed like walking art galleries for all to admire. Many of these have a personal symbolic meaning to the wearer, others are just adornments that take a person’s fancy. Whatever the reason for people having tattoos now, it really is a case of the old adage, “you can’t judge a book by its cover.” I may need to update the criteria for my future employees. “I seek wholesome, natural, healthy looking and energetic hard working people. Ink designs and extra body metal adornments accepted with interesting tats preferred. Fake tattoo sleeve will suffice until the real deal can be organised, otherwise you’re just not going to fit in.” I have mine ordered. The fake one, not the real deal……I’m still a champion for non-conformity. Annie Malone is the proprietor of The Natural Temptation Café, 47 Stephen Street.
To Tattoo Or Not
By Annie Malone
I am showing my age when I say that, in my day, it was considered arty or non-conforming if you had two piercings in the same ear and frequented Indian clothing shops to buy a wrap around Indian cotton skirt and cheesecloth shirt. Leather toe sandals and batik sarongs for daily attire were enough to make any selfrespecting parent worry that their 17 year olds were going to jump on the next hippy rainbow bus bound for Turkey. Or live in a self-sufficient community in the forest never to be seen again. Years on, youth have realised that you don’t have to go away to find a primal tribal culture to live in or dress like to express your non-conformity. You can do it at home….along with everyone else! The flow of clean skinned and unpierced job seekers is becoming a trickle these days while the number of aspiring employees sporting art and ink on their bodies and tiny holes filled with silver wear (and I don’t mean cutlery) is becoming a virtual river. I am speaking from the café hospitality industry perspective. My café once had a uniform code which stated, “no visible piercings to be worn while working,’ that is until I employed one of my nieces who had an eye brow stud. Since then, the manual has read, “piercings allowed at the discretion of management”, meaning, if I think they look non-threatening to the general public, it’s allowed. The manual still reads, “all tattoos must be covered while in work uniform” although I fear that I’m trying to hold back a raging river on the tattoo issue as each new staff member is presenting with more body covered with ink than the last. For centuries, cultures have practised tattooing as part of religious or tribal ritual or to signify spiritual devotion. Tattoos are used in some cultures to show status but 60
Autumn Recipe Sweet Potato Falafel Burger Here’s some comfort food that is actually good for you and easy to prepare! These falafel burgers are made with chickpea flour, which contains less calories and more protein than whole wheat flour, and sweet potatoes, which are packed full of vitamin A and fibre. The recipe makes two burgers, double up the ingredients to make more and try experimenting with the spices depending on your taste.
Ingredients (2 burgers) 250g chickpea flour 1½ tsp ground cumin 1½ tsp ground coriander ½ tsp chilli powder (optional) 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped juice of half a lemon salt and pepper 60ml water 1 medium sized sweet potato
Method Preheat the oven to 190˚C (180˚C fan forced). Bake the sweet potato in a microwave oven until soft. Let it cool down then peel and mash with a fork. Place all the ingredients, apart from the sweet potato, in a large bowl and mix together until combined. If preparing the recipe for young children, the chilli can be left out. Add the mashed sweet potato to the bowl and mix well. Divide the mixture in half and form into two patties and place in the fridge for 15 minutes to firm up. Place the patties on baking paper, spray with oil and bake for approximately 20 minutes. Don’t let them get too brown as the patties will dry out. Serve in a bun with sliced red onion, tomato salsa and fresh coriander leaves.

2015 Vintage By Jake Atkinson
It’s an exciting time of the year in the Geographe wine region with, as I pen this article, local producers well and truly into the 2015 vintage. Amidst the chaos of the grape harvest the winemaker’s logistical skills will be put to the test, having to arrange the juice from this year’s harvest whilst finishing off and bottling some of the wines from the 2014 vintage. Traditionally, white wines are the first to be released with less time needed for vinification with the eagerly anticipated reds not far away. In this edition of The Bunbury Life, I take a look at some classy Geographe whites from the 2014 vintage. One of the most elevated and coolest sites in the Ferguson Valley belongs to Talisman Wines who happen to be one of the few producers making a Riesling, and a darn good one at that! The 2014 Riesling is a classically styled dry offering with pear, granny smith and lemon zest aromatics. The palate is dry and textural with a fresh austere acidity. This wine ticks all the boxes and is a classic example of a great dry Australian Riesling. Merv and Jan Hart of Ferguson Hart Estate have been responsible for producing some fantastic wines for quite some time now and their 2014 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is no exception. It was also the recipient of Best White Blend at the 2014 Geographe Wine
Show. This SBS is a very aromatic little number with passionfruit and nectarine showing. The palate is fresh and bright with a tropical fruit sensation moving into a clean and fresh citric finish. Those that know Peter Stanlake will be aware, not only of his winemaking prowess, but of his unique sense of humour. Last year, he started his own label, El Yolo wines, a collection of wines that are as vibrant in their packaging as they are in presentation in the glass! One of my favourites from the collection is his 2014 El Mixtos Uvas, consisting of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. With a deep aromatic of brioche, peach and grapefruit, the palate has layers of texture and flavour with a peppering of acidity throughout to make a harmoniously balanced offering. This is the kind of wine that is to be enjoyed and it will certainly provide entertainment as it evolves in the glass. Don’t be afraid to let it warm up a few degrees either! The blended Tudor Rose, which represents the joining of the Houses of York and Lancaster back in 1485, also reflects the heritage of the owners Adrian and Jackie who are originally from Yorkshire and Lancashire respectively. ... cont. pg 65 64

Dardanup-based Bonking Frog Wines has recently announced the release of its 2014 Foreigner SSB, a wine recently awarded a gold medal at the Margaret River Wine Show. Using fruit grown in the Margaret River region and produced by talented winemaker Bruce Dukes, the bouquet is brimming with perfumes of gooseberry and nectarine. A classic blend, this lively and refreshing wine is overflowing with fresh fruit flavours leaving a crisp, lingering finish on the palate. A perfect partner with salads and starters as well as lighter meats such as chicken and seafood. Sunday, 29th March is the date for Oakway Estate’s next Long Table Lazy Lunch where diners are invited to the ‘City of Love.’ This Parisian feast will be created by Rebecca Hackett and Daryn Rowland from On The Pass Catering and tickets are now on sale from the winery’s online shop or by calling 9731 7141. Two new wines are also now available to try at the cellar door. The 2014 Sauvignon Blanc has aromas of melon, sage and lemon while undertones of oak have created a textured palate that provides good creamy richness and a long finish with lemon rind and hints of sage. Next up, the 2011 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, recently awarded a Silver Medal at the Geographe Wine Show, has dry, ripe red and dark berry fruits interlaced with some fine silky tannins. With the wine show season now truly behind us, it’s time to reflect on a quite extraordinary year for Geographe winery Smallwater Estate.
