Spring Fashion

Revitalise from head to toe

Spring is here and it’s time to inject some vibrancy into your wardrobe and rejuvenate your look. Choose from sleek and modern silhouettes, dreamy romance or from the battle of the prints. A must-have piece to get through crisp spring days is a sleeveless jacket. With a long line and deep V-neck, it is a great transitional piece and is perfect with softly tailored separates, especially if arms are left bare. Or opt for a simple boxy jacket with a straight silhouette with or without a collar, add a pair of culottes and heeled ankle boots with cut-outs for a lighter look. As well as culottes, super wide-legged pants that skim the floor are ideal for spring. They are fluid and voluminous so move beautifully in the outdoors. To avoid looking swamped by fabric, tuck in a top to accentuate your slimmest part and wear heels to make your legs look longer. For the true romantics, white lace tops, skirts and dresses are extremely feminine. For those that don’t want to wear lace from head to toe, try wearing a crisp white shirt with a midi length lace skirt. Add a piece of edgy jewellery in gold and some 70’s inspired tan accessories.

Spring prints feature classic black and white – monochrome is going nowhere fast. The popular spring nautical theme is back again and this can be mixed up with a print, such as a floral design. Just make sure that the same base colours are matched up. And, following on from last year, tropical prints will pop up on spring pieces too. As for shoes, there is a clear trend for gillie ties. For those that aren’t in the know, these shoes feature loop holes for laces instead of eyelets to create an eye-catching, feminine statement. Find them on pointy flats as well as block heeled sandals. Leather sneakers will also still be an essential part of the shoe closet. As well as being extremely practical, they are contemporary and bring an edge to a long pant. Look for black, metallic or print uppers with white thick soles. BeautiFeel shoes at shoebedoo.com.au

Outdoor Living

Spring is in the air dashes of colour, like burnt orange and burgundy, are great for smaller feature walls. Inject new life into your outdoor space by redressing the dining table. Hurricane lamps are a great way of keeping flames going during a breezy evening but try using beautiful mismatched candle sticks, jars or coloured glasses instead. Put a vase of flowers and cuttings from the garden on the table to make the setting feel homely or, for a rustic feel, plant up little pots of brightly coloured geraniums. Lighting is an essential part of reworking an outdoor space for spring. As well as making an attractive entertaining area, lighting means the garden can be used well into the night, pathways, steps and cooking areas can be safely lit, and features and focal points can be highlighted. Plan the lighting carefully and the garden can take on a new intriguing and different appeal to how it feels during the daytime. For a relaxing dining ambience, use cluster

Spring is the perfect time to get creative with your outdoor space. Put a few ideas into action now and your garden and alfresco will feel more personalised and inspiring for months to come. If new outdoor furniture is not in the budget, simply swap existing pieces around and find new ways of enjoying the space. Consider the ambience you want. For a contemporary outdoor living room, arrange sleek furniture around a coffee table whilst continuing the colour scheme from indoors. And how about really creating the wow factor by building a brick fireplace or installing a fire pit? For a more informal and eclectic look add items, such as a rug, throws or even a mirror, which can be fixed to a wall behind a dining space to brighten up a dull area. Painting a boundary wall adds contrast to the garden and helps plants, decorations and furniture to stand out. Colours that work well are aubergine, dark grey, bluey-grey, khaki and neutrals, such as taupe and off-white. Braver 22

lights in nearby trees or shrubbery as they will cast a gentle yet useable light. They also create eye-catching definition within branches and leaves if placed within architectural plants, such as palms. For single trees and sculptures, up-lights create the perfect look. These draw the eye to a lost corner of the garden and provide depth as well as drama. Up-lights can also be used to accentuate geometry in a more

structured garden by being placed at the bottom of plants. Think about using rope lights to highlight meandering pathways, ground level lights to add glow to steps leading to the house, pool lights and even statement feature lights, which add an impact all of their own. Put the hard yards in now and you will be able to enjoy those hot summer days and balmy summer nights from morning until dusk.

Personalising Learning

By Mathilda Joubert, Educational Consultant

I once read this slogan on a poster, “You are unique; just like everybody else.” As parents we know that our children truly are unique. That’s why we are delighted when a school tells us that they will treat each child as an individual. But what does it really mean when a school says they are personalising learning and why is it important? Research by the Australian Council for Educational Research shows that from the youngest ages there can be up to six years of variation in ability between the most advanced and the least advanced students in a single year group. Treating a class as one-sizefits-all is thus clearly not the solution. Every child deserves to make at least a year’s progress for a year’s learning. The only way teachers can achieve this is to personalise or differentiate the learning to the individual learning needs of children in the class. Personalised learning is based on the belief that, given the right support, all students can (and should) continuously make progress in learning. For some students, this may involve extra support or scaffolding whilst other students may need to be stretched or challenged to extend their learning beyond the traditional expectations for the year group. It is not just about doing more or less work – doing even half of what you don’t understand is useless and doing double of what you already understand is just as useless. Differentiated learning involves engaging with the learning content at a different level of challenge based on the individual learning profile of the student. Professor Carol Ann Tomlinson, a leading expert on differentiated instruction, suggests that teachers can adapt learning tasks for

students in three key ways:- by student interest (for optimal motivation to learn), readiness (for optimal progress in learning) and by learning preference (for optimal efficiency in learning). In a personalised classroom relationships are key. The teacher knows the individual strengths, interests, learning styles and learning needs of every student, they constantly know where students are at in their learning and continuously make adjustments in teaching and planning accordingly. This is often a key feature of small or multi-age classrooms but it is possible (and desirable) in any classroom. Teaching will also look different in a personalised classroom and may be different to what parents expect. The teacher will not stand at the front teaching to the whole class for the majority of the time since that will not serve everybody’s learning needs best. There will be a balance between whole class teaching, small group instruction, individual work and sometimes computer-mediated learning. Students will have personal targets based on learning progress and their classwork and homework may look different. In a personalised classroom the focus is ultimately not on the teaching but on learning. It is about having high expectations for every child because every child is unique – just like everybody else. Mathilda Joubert is Educational Consultant for Swan Christian Education Association. 24

Pursuing Individual Talents At Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School

Whether your child dreams of performing on stage, taking part in an international exchange or joining a team sport, Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School’s co-curricular programme has a myriad of options just waiting to be discovered. The school’s aim is to see students develop not just academically but to flourish beyond the classroom into well-rounded young men and women. With a strong Performing Arts programme that begins in the Primary School, budding musicians and thespians have many opportunities to let their talents shine. Both the Primary and Secondary School have an annual production, which for many students is their first experience of acting and becoming part of a production team. In the Secondary School, students can be involved in every aspect of the performance from sound to lighting and stage management, giving those with interests both on stage and behind the scenes an opportunity to participate. Music is also an active part of the Performing Arts programme. The wide array of bands, choirs and orchestras offers students the experience of playing together on a regular basis, while a host of private music teachers provides tuition to students looking to improve their skills or learn a new instrument. Ensembles regularly perform in the annual Bunbury Eisteddfod as well as in numerous events throughout the year. With over 300 students taking private instrument tuition at the school, music at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar is blossoming! For students who love getting active, confidence in the outdoors starts with the Camps programme. From a day camp in Pre-Primary to ten days on Outward Bound in Year 10, students enjoy bonding with their peers while learning new skills through

physical activities. The School also participates in a host of sporting competitions, with students being able to join a wide selection of teams for evening or weekend competitions. An annual highlight on the sporting calendar is Country Week, where the school has been represented in everything from dance to touch rugby, to girls’ AFL and debating. The swim team is also flourishing with weekly lessons before and after school, swim clinics, interschool competitions and the annual Rottnest Swim Challenge. Joining a club also offers students the chance to try their hands at something new and the choice of options includes chess, games or cycling in the Primary School and woodworking, SCUBA, art or writing in the Secondary School. The Co-Curricular programmes extend to include serving the wider global community. As a member of Round Square, a global organisation which encompasses life experiences and philosophies beyond the classroom, students are encouraged to take part in opportunities based upon its six pillars or IDEALS; Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership and Service. Through student exchanges, service trips to complete community work in disadvantaged areas, conferences within Australia, Australasia and around the world, Round Square can be experienced in a variety of ways. With an expansive choice of performance, sporting, leadership and community service activities on offer at Bunbury Grammar, every student can pursue their individual talents. Negative Gearing

Here to stay?

By Phil Di Candilo

With a number of recent press articles indicating that negative gearing is once again under review, many analysts have been asking themselves the same often repeated question. Could negative gearing be scaled back or even abolished?

part of this speculation is being blamed on negative gearing especially in the high end property market. Further to that, recent enforcement by APRA (the agency that regulates banks) on bank portfolios has also put investment loans in the spotlight. The consequences are that investment loan interest rates are being increased and bank lending to value ratios are starting to tighten.

What is negative gearing?

Negative gearing is a practice where an investor borrows money to acquire an income-producing investment property, expecting the gross income generated by the investment (at least in the short-term) to be less than the cost of owning and managing the investment, including depreciation and interest charged on the loan (but excluding capital repayments). The investor enters into this arrangement expecting the tax benefits and the capital gain on the investment (when the investment is ultimately disposed of ) to exceed the accumulated losses of holding the investment. It is one of the most common forms of investment used by wage earning families to increase wealth during their working lives. The thinking is, ‘’use the tenants money, the banks’ money and the tax office money to help pay off the loan.” However, it is important to remember that negative gearing is only effective in the early stages of owning the investment while interest forms a major part of the loan repayment. As the loan balance comes down so does the interest charged and the property then moves to being neutrally geared before becoming ultimately positive geared.

So what does this all mean?

Well, potentially, the good news is that rather than negative gearing being phased out, a policy guaranteed to cause huge voter dissatisfaction, the tightening up of lending criteria through the regulation of banks might have the required effect of slowing the over-heating investment market. In other words, a ‘back door’ fix by APRA seems to be the preferred approach rather than an outright abolishment or scaling back of negative gearing. If negative gearing is part of your investment strategy, remember to maximise your deductions by following these tips. Always keep your receipts, get your property manager to pay all property expenses during the year to provide a year-end summary of all property income and holding costs, and try and obtain a tax depreciation report on the property as this claim alone can add up to be a few thousand dollars each year. Phil Di Candilo is Director of RSM Bird Cameron Bunbury, part of a full service, national accounting group, delivering expert corporate financial and advisory accounting services to clients across diverse industry sectors. Triumph Bonneville Newchurch

Special edition café racer hits the streets!

Visit the small Austrian town of Neukirchen in June and the chances are you will be joining in the biggest annual worldwide Triumph party. Known as Tridays, this unique motorcycle event brings together Triumph owners and fans alike and transforms Neukirchen, or Newchurch as it is named during the event, into a very British celebration of everything Triumph. Having recently released a number of special edition models for some of its more popular bikes, the Bonneville Newchurch is Triumph’s latest special edition offering. Designed to capture the passion and energy of the event, the Newchurch is powered by Triumph’s air-cooled, 856cc parallel twin engine, which produces 68hp at 7500rpm and 68Nm of torque at 5800rpm. With a sophisticated computerised management system delivering clean emissions and a smooth predictable ride, there’s enough performance here to suit even the most experienced of riders. Once again, the design team at Triumph has created another visual masterpiece. With its magnificent twin engine at the heart of the bike, the classic retro-themed look is further enhanced by its stylish new paint scheme and eye-catching black detailing throughout. The sweeping curved fuel tank with its jet black Triumph logo is hand painted in either cranberry red and pure white or sapphire blue and white, and its seven-spoke cast-aluminium black wheels feature exquisite red pinstripes. In addition to the wheels, the black detailing also features on the headlight bowl, handlebars, mirrors and rear shocks.

To complete the look, the Bonneville Newchurch comes fitted with a new low profile seat. Set at 740mm, which, according to Triumph, is the optimal way to get the classic, natural Newchurch riding position, the position is designed to suit riders of all heights with bars and footrests laid out to create plenty of space and comfort on longer rides. It’s enough to want to make you book up your holidays and head over to Europe! For further information on the Triumph range, visit exclusive Bunbury dealer Millard Marine and Motorcycle Centre at 5 Sandridge Road, or call 9721 3033.

BMW 1 Series LCI

Dynamic facelift for hot hatch

Launched as a replacement for the BMW 3 Series Compact back in 2004, the BMW 1 Series has without doubt been an unqualified success. With over 2 million units sold worldwide over the last ten years, car buyers have flocked to BMW’s entry level model in their droves and there is no reason to suggest that the latest 1 Series offering won’t receive the same enthusiastic response. Four years on from the launch of the second generation 1 Series, the facelift BMW 1 Series LCI offers a radical upgrade to the exiting model. Available again as 4-door or coupé, aside from an extensive visual makeover, it is now fitted with the latest generation of engines, offering considerably improved performance and efficiency. Design-wise, the exterior of the 1 Series LCI has adopted some noticeable changes. A more dynamic, chiselled front end features a

reshaped kidney grille, larger air intakes and flatter-geometry headlights with LED daytime running lights. The LED-powered rear lights have also been completely remodelled and now display the ‘L’ shape characteristics of current BMW models. With slightly more flared wheel arches, a new rear bumper and some additional styling cues, the 1 Series LCI has become a seriously good looking car. It’s not just the exterior, though, that has benefited from the makeover. With its redesigned centre stack, the 1 Series LCI’s standard features now include automatic air-con, a fully adjustable leather steering wheel, a rain sensor, automatic headlights, BMW’s Radio Professional with six speakers and AUX input and a 6.5-inch iDrive infotainment system along with a huge list of optional extras. The interior also features

Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake

All new wagon with extra practicality

Eighteen months after the arrival of the game-changing CLA comes the launch of the wagon version of Mercedes Benz’s hugely popular small sedan. The CLA Shooting Brake becomes the largest of the Mercedes-Benz small car range; a range that now includes the A-Class, B-Class, GLA SUV and CLA, and, just like its sedan sibling, once again it takes its design cues from the curvaceous CLS 4-door coupé. The CLA Shooting Brake may still have those unmistakeable sweeping CLS looks but the key to this new model is the extra space it provides. Offering an extra 25 litres of boot capacity to give an overall total of 495 litres, the hatch-style tailgate provides plenty of extra practicality and flexibility.

“For those in need of some serious performance, the CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake delivers in spades.” With back seats that fold flat, an extra bracket cleverly allows the back seats to be stashed vertically to further increase storage capacity. A larger opening to the boot also allows for more cumbersome items, such as bikes or golf clubs, to be stored much more easily. It’s not just the extra storage space, however, that hits the mark. Passengers will also enjoy the extra headroom afforded by the reconfigured roof that stretches further towards the back of the car. Although still clocking in at the same length and width of the sedan version, an extra 40 millimetres of rear headspace has been achieved through the newly designed roof; a roof that also now allows for a greater choice of volume and

shape of items stacked on top of it. Available with a choice of four engine options, the range starts with the entry level CLA200 1.6 litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol, delivering 115kW of power and 250Nm of torque. The

on the road diesel option is the CLA200CDi with its 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder turbo powered powerplant, delivering 100kW and 300Nm, whereas the CLA250 Sport, featuring a 2.0 litre turbo petrol engine, is expected to be the popular choice amongst buyers. Producing 155kW of power and 350Nm of torque through its 7-speed transmission system, this all-wheel drive model offers plenty of acceleration and reassuring handling. For those in need of some serious performance, the CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake delivers in spades. Fitted with a 2.0 litre

4-cylinder turbo powered petrol engine that delivers 265kW and 450Nm, this brute of a unit propels the wagon from 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds, again, using its all-wheel drive system. Adding extra versatility to the CLA range without compromising on style, the CLA Shooting Brake is a welcome addition to the Mercedes Benz range. Priced from just over $50,000 plus on-roads, it also provides excellent value for money. For further information on the all new Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake, contact Mercedes-Benz Bunbury on 9721 8199.

Meet Madison Bright (aged 13) and Andrew Beattie (aged 12)

At the recently held Artistic National Rollerskating Championships in Adelaide, The Rink Bunbury entered no less than 18 competitors across a total of 33 events. In this issue, we talk to 2 rising stars of the sport, both with a big future ahead of them. How long have you been skating and what prompted you to start? MB – This is my 7th year skating and it all began after a trip to Bunbury to watch a movie. We were 2 hours early so we came to a session at The Rink and I was hooked. AB – This is my 4th year skating. A few years ago, I was invited to a birthday party at The Rink and as soon as I got home I asked my parents to go again. My interest then continued to grow. What do you enjoy most about the sport? MB – I love meeting new people, learning new things and challenging myself. I also like the fact it keeps me fit and healthy. AB – I really enjoy the compulsory dance programme and skating with my dance partner. How do you manage to fit in other commitments, such as school work, family and friends? MB – I don’t find it a problem and I normally get all my school work done on time. AB – My family and friends have always been good at fitting in around my skating and I manage to do my school work at break times or on a Sunday when I’m not skating. What are your personal highlights so far? MB – My goal at this year’s nationals was to achieve top ten in all of my events, which I achieved. My personal highlight was finishing 5th out of 20 in Preliminary Figures. (Madison’s parents also skated at the event with her mother, Rhonda, finishing 1st in Masters Advanced Figures!). AB – Highlights include learning over 70

dances, competing in 3 national championships and medalling at this year’s championships. (Andrew won a total of 4 silver medals, 2 of which he won with his dance partner, Jasmine Williams). What are your ambitions in the sport? MB – I hope one day that the sport makes it into the Olympics and I would also like to compete at the World Championships. AB – I would love to represent Australia at the World Championships. Susan Brooks (Coach) - Both kids are really talented and show tremendous commitment to the sport. Andrew had a very demanding week at the nationals but impressed me with his focus and determination. Madison, who equally shows great commitment, lives in Busselton and travels to The Rink to train and take lessons. Her family has even decided to move house to be closer to the centre! 42

Rising Stars

Meet Will Drew (aged 12) and Shannon Dalton (aged 13)

These Year 7 Bunbury Catholic College and Year 8 Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School students are the next wave of junior sailing talent emerging from the greater Bunbury area. Coming from a long lineage of local sailors, Will is the fourth generation in his family to take up the sport whereas Shannon is the younger sister of Jayden Dalton, the first and only junior sailor ever admitted into the South West Academy of Sport. Whilst Jayden’s achievements are well documented, younger sister Shannon has been carving her own name for herself. A talented young sailor in her own right, she recently won the female crown at the Queensland ISAF Youth Championships and currently is the top ranked female in WA, giving the top five boys a good run for their money. She was also selected in the Australia Optimist team to compete in Qatar and is part of the WA team for the nationals. In an unusual twist, Jayden coaches Will but not his younger sister. Will has enjoyed a stellar first year in the O’pen BIC class dinghy since first entering the sport in March 2014. Just ten at the time, Will has gone on to sail the equivalent of three normal club seasons during his first year and has attended every coaching clinic and all but one major regatta on the WA circuit. Already registered for the O’pen BIC World Titles being held in Victoria this Christmas, Will has a very busy few months ahead of him to prepare.180 boats are expected and he has his sights set firmly on the U13 division and a top ten finish amongst the world’s best. Progressing quickly through the O’pen BIC ranks in WA, Will has accumulated some solid results in his first season. After clinching third in the silver fleet national titles in

Sandringham, Victoria, in January, he then stepped up to gold fleet and claimed the WA U13 title in March. He followed this with 2nd in the open gold division at the MOFSC Easter Youth Grand Prix after breaking through for his first gold fleet race wins. He currently leads the open division in the major WA winter series on the Swan River, having won four of the five races sailed to date. Shannon is currently holding fourth position in the Optimist gold fleet at the same regatta. The tight knit local pair has bonded well as they travel around WA to the various events. Both have been selected to attend the invite only WestSAIL, WA’s junior high performance camp in September. Jayden is also attending in the 420 dinghy to which he has graduated, and won the WA state title in the class. Both also recently attended the Optimist gold fleet camp at Jervoise Bay after Shannon lent Will her spare boat. Add to this the other prominent local juniors who have recently graduated from the O’pen Bic class, and one could be forgiven for thinking there was something in the water in Koombana Bay. Kaiella Taylor, long the benchmark for O’pen BICs in Bunbury, has recently competed in the European O’pen BIC championships on Lake Garda in what may be her last regatta in the class unless she decides to contest the Worlds. Both she and Luke Dobrich have stepped up to the bigger 29er class dinghy where they will continue the close rivalry they established sailing BICs. 44

rushing through her regime. “I don’t have a lot of time to spend on myself. Prior to DMK my beauty regime was all about speed and I just didn’t use the right products,” she said whilst also admitting she hadn’t felt that her skin looked good without make-up for years. After 12 weeks of weekly treatments and a no-rushing-allowed home care regime, Siobhan has had an outstanding result. “The tone of my skin has evened out, my fine lines have diminished, dark circles under my eyes have reduced, and my face has become smooth and soft. Overall, my skin now looks amazing and I get comments all the time.” Siobhan concludes, “It’s really nice to just use the DMK products and not put any make-up on for the day.” And, finally, she tells us what we really wanted to hear, “Yes. I have my glow back.” Niobe Gulley is the owner of The Beauty Shop and The Beauty Shop Beauty Room. Visit The Beauty Shop Beauty Room for further information on the DMK range of skincare products.

Your skin is meant to look good. However, various factors, such as ageing, our environment and our lifestyle choices, can make it age prematurely. So to counteract these factors and ensure a beautiful complexion, a good skincare regime is vital. As one of the world’s leading skincare brands, DMK uses a scientific, tailored approach to skincare with each individual prescribed specific products to exactly match their needs. Products within the DMK range have been devised around the concept of Remove, Rebuild, Protect and Maintain, and aim to bring skin back to its best as it was originally intended by nature. The belief is that most skin concerns are born out of disharmony within the skin itself. So, following an assessment, formulations are chosen that match the body’s chemistry and prompt the skin into responding positively and working like youthful healthy skin. To illustrate the benefits of using a personalised skincare regime by DMK, here’s Siobhan’s story. For busy mum of two, Siobhan, 37, a healthy skin regime was at the bottom of her to-do list. While her ever-so-slightly ageing skin wasn’t affecting her confidence, she had started to notice the changes. In her own words, “I wanted to improve certain things and get my glow back!” Through a series of treatments and a home care regime prescribed specifically for her, “get her glow back” is exactly what she did. “My skin was dull, had no bounce or glow, and was often quite dry. I was starting to notice fine lines too,” says Siobhan. One of the main reasons her skin had lost its lustre was that between full-time work and raising two children, Siobhan had left herself until last, 45

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) For Skin Rejuvenation

generate a brand new band of collagen at the end of the course of treatment. How long does it take? A full face and neck treatment takes about 40 minutes. Is there downtime and does it hurt? Depending on the method used, some mild discomfort may be experienced but no pain should be felt. With the point and shoot method, most patients will feel a sting similar to an elastic band flick on the skin and whereas with the in-motion method, a gradual heating of the skin will be felt in a section of the treated area over a number of seconds. Further to that, some skin redness may be noticeable 24 to 48 hours after each treatment. Following treatment, pigmentation on the face will darken and clear within 7 to 10 days and on the body within 14 to 21 days. Vascular lesions will either immediately disappear or appear grey in colour and disappear over a short time. What is the cost? For a full face one IPL treatments costs $300. Are there any risks or side effects? A test dose prior to treatment is necessary to avoid complications and it is very important that IPL technicians are formally trained and qualified. They will also need to be qualified as an IPL/Laser and Safety Officer, a qualification recognised by the Radiological Council of WA. Jeanette Elliott is a dermal clinician who has many years’ experience in helping patients to understand their skin and the conditions that may affect it, providing realistic expectations of the results that can be achieved. She is a member of both The Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians and The Aesthetics Practitioners Advisory Network and is actively involved in the dermal therapy professional community via her role as a student assessor within The Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science. A light based skin therapy By Jeanette Elliott

What is IPL? Intense pulsed light photo rejuvenation is used to treat skin surface irregularities, such as fine lines, enlarged pores and benign pigmented and vascular lesions. It regenerates the skin by stimulating the production of collagen, helping to improve the skin’s elasticity and texture. Which areas can be treated? It can be used on your face, neck, chest, hands and arms. Common issues addressed include age spots, sun spots, freckles, pigmentation, damaged fine blood vessels, redness and rosacea, fine lines and uneven skin tones. How does it work? Using specific filters, the intense pulsed light is absorbed by the pigment or the vascular lesion. The body recognises these absorbed pigments or vascular lesions as waste and expels them. Once treated, patients typically experience clearer skin, refined pores, improved skin texture and, over time, a reduction in fine lines through the production of new collagen. Studies show that patients who undertake one IPL session per month over several months can 46

Pet Insurance By Dr Braden Collins This is where pet insurance comes in. There is nothing more heartbreaking for pet owners and, for that matter, vets than having to put an animal to sleep because the owner can’t afford the necessary treatment. The other benefit of pet insurance rarely considered is the public liability insurance it offers. Did you know that if your pet runs onto the road and causes an accident you could be liable for any damages? Imagine how high these damages could be if a person was seriously injured or an accident involved multiple vehicles. For pet insurance, we deal with two main types. Firstly, there are 12 month policies that cover the pet when a condition is diagnosed. These can be useful if the pet breaks a leg or has a one-off illness but if they develop an ongoing condition they will only cover the animal for the first year. After that, you’re on your own. We recommend policies that cover the pet for life. That way, if a pet develops a chronic illness or injury, there’s cover for however long it takes to treat the condition. Our preferred

It never ceases to amaze me how much veterinary medicine and surgery has progressed since I graduated over fifteen years ago. Advances in cancer treatment, in the control of arthritis and in diagnostic imaging along with almost every area of veterinary medicine means we are now able to do more than ever to keep our pets happy and healthy. While specialist centres are doing incredible work, the general practitioner vet has also moved ahead in leaps and bounds. Within our two clinics, we are able to offer CT scanning, digital x-rays, endoscopy, chemotherapy, soft tissue reconstruction and many other services that were barely heard of in animals 15 years ago. While these advancements are all good news for pets, it’s not always good news for your wallet. With a CT scan costing $1600, a course of chemotherapy costing up to $5000 and referral to specialist centres often costing over $10000, many pets don’t get to experience the full benefit of these advancements due to owners being unable to afford the best options. 48

Petplan’s many benefits include: • 4 weeks’ free cover for pets 8 weeks old to 12 months old once they have been examined and certified healthy. • Lifelong cover for all conditions. • Cover of bilateral conditions. Petplan will cover both sides. • Different levels of cover to suit needs and budget. • Petplan only do pet insurance so they don’t bombard you with offers for other insurance types. Ferguson Falls Café

A pioneer of the Geographe Wine scene, Ferguson Falls Estate is well known for its award-winning wines produced from its three hectare vineyard in the heart of the Ferguson Valley. Owned by Peter and Margaret Giumelli, who originally ran a dairy farm on the property, vines were planted in the early 1980’s and original Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were soon joined by Chardonnay, Merlot, Tempranillo and Verdelho. Also renowned for its fabulous homemade cheeses, exciting news is that the winery has recently opened its new cellar door and café. Run by Café Manager and daughter-in-law Laura Giumelli, on a glorious June afternoon, The Bunbury Life decided to take the picturesque drive out to the Valley and pay it a visit. Offering up a mouth-watering array of homemade pizzas, tasting plates, salads, desserts and Yahava coffee, it’s clear that Ferguson Falls Café takes immense pride in using locally sourced, high quality ingredients for the menu. Sourcing Ferguson Valley beef, sour dough bread from the local baker and locally smoked ham, its pizzas feature slow-cooked homemade sauces, delicious homemade sausage and cheeses from the family-run dairy, now operated by Peter’s youngest son, Michael. We decided to tuck into a couple of the stone-fired pizzas on offer and what a good decision this proved to be. Firstly, we tried the Buffalo Chicken, a wonderful mix of chicken,

bacon, capsicum, red hot sauce and mozzarella topped with a swirl of cool ranch sauce. Be assured that the special hot American-style sauce is worth the trip alone! Next up, we chose a quite different pizza, the Artichoke Gourmet. With its homemade cashew pesto base, garlic, artichokes, marinated goats’ cheese, parmesan and mozzarella, this tasty dish was the perfect accompaniment to the winery’s ever popular chilled red, Primavera Rosso. Finally, we sampled one of the excellent gelatos also produced by son Michael and wife Sophia. Marketed under the brand name Double Handful, the range of gelatos is also available at an increasing amount of stockists in the region. We tried the Salted Caramel with White Choc Flake, a sensational, lightly salted caramel-flavoured gelato. Heaven! With its glorious views over the surrounding countryside, Ferguson Falls Café offers the perfect spot for a relaxing afternoon. Dine inside or alfresco on the deck and enjoy superb homemade fare in an unbeatable location. Open Thurs to Sun (+ long weekends) 11am to 5pm 172 Pile Road, Dardanup, Ferguson Valley Fully Licensed Tel 9728 1616 www.fergusonfalls.com.au 52

Win a mixed case of wine from Oakway Estate

If you enjoy a drop of local award-winning wine, then don’t miss this! In this issue, there’s a mixed case of wine up for grabs courtesy of Donnybrook-based winery Oakway Estate. With vines first planted in 1997, owners Wayne and Ria Hammond produced their first commercial vintage in 2002 and over the last decade have consistently been one of the region’s most decorated wineries. A 4.5 star winery in James Halliday’s 2015 Australian Wine Companion, last year saw Oakway Estate win no less than 14 medals at some of the most highly regarded national and regional wine shows. Oakway’s approach to vineyard management involves observing vine vigour and growth to craft the best possible fruit. The team also takes great pride in the minimal-use chemicals philosophy preferring natural alternatives to any problems experienced during fruit growth. Fruit thinning, leaf plucking and water management is carefully undertaken to ensure intense berry flavours are achieved and through its limited production policy, this boutique winery places a strong emphasis on producing premium quality wines. Available to purchase online, the wines can be sampled at the cellar door, open 11am to 5pm Saturday, Sunday and most public holidays, which is also home to a café serving up a delicious range of tasting pates and gourmet pizzas.

Spots On My Apples …and broken bread By Annie Malone

Save the environment, buy local, embrace clean ethical living. These slogans have always been paramount to any conscientious, natural living, aging hippy like myself. Joni Mitchell sang about it all in Big Yellow Taxi. “Hey farmer farmer put away your DDT. I don’t care ‘bout spots on my apples, leave me the birds and the bees…please.” The general public are catching onto this ethos and want to make a difference to our beautiful planet. Big business has also caught the bug and the ‘odd bunch’ of fruit or veg is a current marketing strategy to help farmers move their non-conforming sized fruit. This helps to educate consumers that fruit, being a natural product, has a mind of its own sometimes. Misshapen but still delicious. However, despite all this marketing to the masses, getting acceptance of products that are not quite perfect is still a hard sell to the privileged consumer who is still conditioned to uniformity equals good. At our café, we source local free range eggs that are fresh, delicious and delivered by the local producer. Recently, we had a table of young girls come in for breakfast. They were impressed with the organic choices and gluten free options and my thoughts were that these girls knew a thing or two about conscious living. So I was surprised when one of them questioned the health of the egg that was served on her sourdough. One egg was a deep rich orange colour, the likes of which you would never see from a battery hen house. The other was a lovely yellow, not too pale not too dark, but just yellow. The query was that one was a different colour to the other. Was it OK to eat, was it off? What was our opinion about this? Our staff member explained how the eggs were free range and that some chooks have different preferences to foods just like humans.

So perhaps the chook that laid that particular egg didn’t eat as much green feed as the other chook. After all, free range girls aren’t force fed so there are always going to be differences in mineral uptake! In short, egg colour is not always uniform. Satisfied with this new information on animal biology the customer polished off her breakfast. I made a mental note to tell our egg man to perhaps be more disciplined with his chooks and perhaps gently coerce them all into eating their green! My other thought was that I hoped our customer didn’t post the poor errant egg on a social media site to be humiliated by an unforgiving public. Oh the shame…..but that’s another article. Then we had the case of the ‘broken bread’ sandwich. A lovely girl returned her lunch saying that her bread was broken on her gluten free sandwich. On inspection, we found that when the sandwich maker (a real person, not a machine) had cut the sandwich in half, one corner had cracked because of the amount of filling. Gluten free bread, not having the same elastic qualities as wheat bread due to the absence of gluten, has a crumblier texture. Our recipe is the closest to a bread texture that we have found. Pretty good we think but not perfect enough. Customers still want the wheat bread quality but without the wheat. So as I begin grinding the next batch of organic grain, I ponder. Then I chat with Brian about tending his happy free range chooks as he enquires about the quality of his golden produce. I then go back to the workbench, hum along to Big Yellow Taxi and lament to myself, ‘ah we’ve come a long way Joni but still got a way to go.” I love hospitality! Annie Malone is the proprietor of The Natural Temptation Café, 47 Stephen Street. 58

Geographe Blends

By Jake Atkinson

Creating a great wine is all about making do and coping with what a particular season may throw at you. Sometimes, conditions can be favourable and, sometimes, not so favourable. However, one area where a skilled winemaker truly shows their colours is when he or she creates a delicious drop through artistically blending wines. Blending is one of the only true steps in winemaking where the winemaker can control the final finished product. So to pay a bit of homage to those skilled individuals of the Geographe who have mastered this craft, in this edition, I have decided to take a look at some skilfully blended, sublime wines. Mazza Wines of Donnybrook is a unique and charming little operation solely using Spanish and Portuguese grape varietals for their selection of wines. Cinque, which translated from Italian means the number five, is also the name of one of my favourite Mazza releases. Cinque is a combination of five different grape verities; Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, Graciano, Tinta Cão and Sousão. The 2009 vintage is the current release and, having had time to settle in, the bottle is a bright fullblooded red with Chinese cooking spices and blackberry and gamey aromas. The aromatics of the wine translate directly to the palate with a smooth peppering of fine textured tannins and ripe, bright red fruit character. It is a wonderful expression of a rustic dry red and comes highly recommended. Keeping with the same Mediterranean theme, I recently had the chance to sample what I consider to be one of the best rosé wines of Geographe produced in recent times. The 2015 Flamenco from Green Door Wines is a blend of

Mourvedre and Grenache and truly expresses how good a dry rosé can and should be. Coming from the Mourvedre is a vibrant yet savoury aromatic tone, complimented and brightened up with the sweet ripe red fruit nature of Grenache. On the palate, the wine compiles a balance of flavours between strawberries and cream, brioche and Spanish ham, proceeding into a smooth, clean and refreshing finish. Even though Mediterranean grape varieties are getting an increasing amount of attention in Geographe recently, the origins and more common varieties of the region shouldn’t be overlooked. You would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t try the 2012 Willow Bridge Estate Coat of Arms Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot. The wine is a powerful but focused balance of the two grapes with big bold cabernet aromatics coming from the glass together with nettles, capsicum and blackberry. The palate, thanks to the addition of Merlot, is smooth, full and savoury and is bound with ripe berry fruit, mocha and silky smooth tannins. It is a fantastic example of how good cabernet wines can be from the Geographe region. This wine is a masterstroke of a late friend of mine, a brilliant winemaker and a great man, Simon Burnell. We miss you, mate! Jake Atkinson is Sommelier at Mojo’s Restaurant, Victoria Street, Bunbury. 60

The Geographe Wine Region Welcome to another update on the news and happenings around the Geographe wine region. News from Barton Jones Wines is that the winery has maintained its four star status in the recently published 2016 James Halliday Wine Companion, being described as, “a very good producer of wines with class and character.” Stand out reviews in the 2016 edition included 94 out of 100 for The Box Seat Semillon and 93 out of 100 for The Brilliant Cut Semillon Sauvignon Blanc. The winery has also announced some further releases under the Barton Jones Cellar Series labels, including the 2015 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and 2015 Chenin Blanc. News from the cellar door is that visitors can now enjoy a range of vineyard cheese platters, served with local WA artisan cheeses, pickles and chutneys. Open Thursday to Monday from 10.30am to 4.30pm, further platters are planned this spring. 2014 was certainly a good year for Mandalay Road Wines’ reds. At the recent Boutique Wine Awards in Sydney, the winery won a gold medal for its 2014 Cabernet Shiraz blend plus bronze

medals for its 2014 Shiraz and 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon. Wine Showcase magazine also awarded the winery a gold medal for the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon and high silvers for the 2014 Shiraz and 2014 Cabernet Shiraz blend. Oakway Estate reports that the team has been hard at work pruning in the vineyard and the 2015 whites are now being bottled. The winery continues to hold its popular Long Table Lazy Lunches on selected Sunday afternoons throughout the year. Using a selection of local ingredients to conjure up a choice of mouthwatering creations, the chefs have perfectly matched the menu to suit Oakway Estate’s award-winning wines. Priced at $69 per person plus drinks, check out the winery’s website for dates and further details. Chapman Hill-based winery Whicher Ridge Wines is thrilled to announce that the winery has once again been awarded a five star winery rating in the 2016 James Halliday Wine Companion. Of the five wines submitted for tasting, three (2013 Riesling, 2013 Sauvignon Blanc and 2011 Elevation Cabernet) were awarded scores of between 95 and 96 points out of 100. The winery’s flagship wine, the

2011 Elevation Cabernet, awarded 96 points (the equivalent of a gold medal), was an especially exciting result for the team, which has seen each vintage improve as the vines mature. This award follows hot on the heels of the winery’s selection as one of the Ten Dark Horse Wineries in the 2015 companion. Owner Cathy Howard said, “We will be spending the next few weeks celebrating our five star rating while sharing our awardwinning wines with friends and family, our Alto Wine Club members, our Mailing List members and with visitors to our cellar door. A five star rating along with wine ... cont. pg 64

food & wine scores of between 95 and 96 points is a very special achievement for a small artisan producer such as us!” Finally, following the tragic death of winemaker Simon Burnell, Willow Bridge Estate has recently appointed highly decorated and respected winemaker Kim Horton to the role of Chief Winemaker. Regarded as one of the leading winemakers in the state and following thirteen years as senior winemaker at Ferngrove Vineyards, Franklin River, Kim joined the Ferguson Valley-based winery in early June. Jeff Dewar, owner of Willow Bridge Estate said, “We are honoured that Kim, who is regarded as one of the leading Winemakers in WA, has decided to make the move to the Ferguson Valley. The current Willow Bridge Estate wines are a testament to the vineyards, the skills and perfectionism of the entire team and we look forward to the passion, knowledge and expertise that Kim will bring to these wines in the future.”

The Confidence Man

what’s on

A life and death situation has never been so fun

Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre

The Cube, Thursday 12, Friday 13 and Saturday 14 November Created by Perth’s award-winning Side Pony Productions (The Pride, The Wives of Hemingway, The Manic Pony), director Zoe Pepper brings this new, interactive audio experience that places you (the audience) at the centre of the action. When a large sports bag full of cash is brought into Peter’s very ordinary suburban home, his family find themselves caught up in a sinister and disturbing chain of events. You are invited to step onto the floor and into this gripping thriller, experiencing first-hand the sordid betrayal and moral philandering that’s about to smother this suburban dream. Want to play? Equipped with a mask and headset, you get to star in this heist drama, playing one of six characters as this deliciously dark tale unfolds. Want to watch? Use the smartphone to flick between the characters’ stories, tuning in on their innermost thoughts as the action plays out onstage. Described by The West Australian as ‘Lantana meets Pulp Fiction’, this morally complex tail hiding beneath the veneer of a suburban family drama unfolds with the gripping intimacy of a tale whispered in your ear! Tickets for The Confidence Man are now on sale at BREC. Book online at www.bunburyentertainment.com or call the Box Office on 1300 661 272.

“…hands-down winner for most engaging and original piece of theatre for 2013.” Tania Herbert, Theatre Press

“You can’t miss this show! I highly recommend you participate even though you may be nervous in the beginning. As soon as you get started, it’s a thrill ride. Do it!” Julia Hern, Australian Stage

“The end of the show sparks an immediate desire to see it again, to follow the characters and stories missed the first time around.” Nerida Dickinson, ArtsHub
