new issue, a new year and our tenth year of publication! There’s much debate about how more traditional forms of media and ways of communication have become outdated and, in some cases, obsolete. However, we believe there is still something quite unique and special about print media. Yes, we live in an increasingly digital age but glossy, high quality magazines continue to thrive through their unique way of interacting with their audience. Magazines are portable, don’t take an age to re-boot and don’t run out of battery power. They are entertaining, informative and wonderfully tactile. It was once said that TV would kill off radio and video hire shops would kill off the cinema. Neither has happened and the truth is that all media will continue to co-exist. However, for us at The Bunbury Life magazine, ink on paper will always be the medium for luxury and highly photographic content. Here’s to the next ten years! Enjoy the read,

AUTUMNAL TONES reimagine trends and reinvent classics The latest fashion trends from The Bunbury Life’s resident fashion expert. Every true fashionista loves a change in season. It’s the perfect excuse to acquire new wardrobe staples and treats. So what’s on trend for the coming months? Autumn is a season that typically favours darker muted shades but this season’s styles are far from predictable. Expect to see bright red, soft pink and metallics interspersed with midnight blue, purple and military green. For prints, there are flouncy, sheer floral shirts and midi dresses with deep necklines, which may at first seem more appropriate for springtime but, with long sleeves, they suit our mild WA autumn days perfectly. Another current feminine trend is the romantic blouse

with Victoriana frills, lace and bell sleeves that we have seen versions of in past seasons. Keep it simple with a pair of jeans or high waisted, wide leg pants for a classic and pretty look. Swap out the romance for more high impact and drama with a comeback from the 80s. Autumn fashion is selecting and reimagining 80s statement pieces, such as pointed toes on heels, gorgeously

... bright red, soft pink and metallics interspersed with midnight blue, puple and military green ... dramatic, fluid metallic fabric, mirrored sunglasses and big shoulders. But instead of garish colours and voluminous pants, pieces come in neutral shades and are teamed with contemporary skinny jeans or smart outerwear. And for footwear, it has to be white – in pumps, loafers, mules or boots. It certainly

STYLE

brightens up an autumnal day. In complete contrast, there is a re-emergence of the Normcore trend. Officially given its name around two years ago, it originally featured generally unremarkable pieces, such as logoed tees and baseball caps with understated casual jeans. The blank ‘anti-style’ look was adopted by wearers who didn’t want their clothes to pigeonhole them yet, ironically, it has now turned into a major fashion trend. The new way to wear Normcore is to add your own bold accessories, like a tote or heeled boots. Bomber jackets are still popping up every season with new textures and colours, and this wardrobe staple never loses its edge. Bright colours, floral embroidery and gorgeously expensive looking fabric, this season’s bomber can be worn with favourite jeans, tailored pants or a midi pleated skirt. Remember puffer jackets? They are back again for those cooler days but with an updated shape. Puffers, in every colour imaginable as well as metallic, look better unzipped and are oversized with a wide crop to look great with any kind of pant.

INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS Add some wow to your home with the top 5 trends for 2017 BY CHERIE BARBER

1

Tropical prints

Want to add some excitement to an interior? Then invest in a bold piece of furniture or add tropical wallpaper with sophisticated botanicals to invigorate the home. Not ready to dive headfirst into the tropical trend? Try investing in some rainforestinspired cushions with a trendy pattern to add a refreshing touch.

2

Wallpaper

Wallpaper has been a trend gracing the pages of Vogue for years and shows no sign of disappearing in 2017. Feature wallpaper has emerged as a timeless and classic trend that complements any interior style. A feature wall can transform a room’s feel or aesthetic, bringing pattern, colour and textures together into a cohesive whole. New 18 HOME

trends have emerged with fabric wallpapers in linens and silk, which are pushing the boundaries. Also, try more earthy and organic textured materials in natural tones, whether it’s a grass weave or a design that takes its cue from nature.

3

Rich colours

There’s a move away from safe neutrals into more adventurous hues and moody palettes this year with a big lust on green. Whether it’s an emerald green vase or a feature wall in Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Greenery, the hues of green are back for 2017 giving interiors a revitalising and refreshing touch that is symbolic of new beginnings. Alternatively, strike out with a deep-ocean blue, a shade of violet, or try a rich terracotta to add warmth.

brightening up the space. Try floating shelves instead of top cupboards to increase storage options.

Open shelving is one of my favourite trends and is a classic modern style that has persisted for years. It offers a more relaxed and comfortable atmosphere in a kitchen by opening and

LED lighting

The effects of LED lighting are definitely worth experimenting with in the kitchen or the bathroom. LED lights are an efficient and affordable way to illuminate an interior space, especially since pricing has dropped and they are designed to last longer than traditional light globes. Try strip lighting under an island bench or in the kickboards for an efficient way to enhance a space.

new year brings new resolutions and if you have decided that 2017 is finally the year to try a new sport and get fit, how about giving the increasingly popular sport of roller skating a try? Here at The Rink, Bunbury, we run one of the country’s leading national skating centres. Operating for eighteen years, the centre provides skating activities suitable for all ages and for all skating abilities. An exhilarating sport and a highly effective way of getting fit, roller skating is great fun, inexpensive and

accessible whilst providing plenty of practical health benefits. Regular skating can not only improve aerobic fitness and endurance, it also reduces body fat and tones pelvic, hip and leg muscles. Don’t know where to start? Well, for those wishing to learn, The Rink’s Learn to Skate classes provide the ideal opportunity to discover the sport. Expert tuition provides all of the necessary skills for those planning to participate in general skating or for those planning to progress to a higher level. Covering both inline and roller skating, the classes emphasise safe and active participation in the sport with protective gear provided. Run by both accredited and trainee coaches, the classes cater for all ages and levels. So no matter what your current level of skating, the coaches are always available to help. You’ll get fit, improve your balance and coordination and find a whole new social outlet for you and your friends. These half hour classes are run on Monday and Thursday evenings from 5pm and on Saturdays from 3pm at a cost of $11 per class, including skates and protective gear. And, once you have caught the skating bug, you can skate every Saturday from 10am to 3pm and Sunday from 11am to 4pm, including school holidays and public holidays, with discount packages available for classes and general sessions to keep the costs affordable for regular skaters.

Located at Gibbons Road, Davenport, for further information on skating at The Rink, call 9725 6999 or visit www.therink.com.au for general skating and class times. 20 SPORT & RECREATION

There's Thunderbird, Daytona, Bonneville or Thruxton to name just a few. Ten years ago, the company was also responsible for introducing the game-changing Street Triple; a stylish, light and agile, high performance street bike, which redefined the roadster market. Forward wind to 2017 and Triumph has again pulled out all the stops. Introducing the 2017 Street Triple Family - the most explosive, exhilarating and intuitive range of performance street motorcycles the company has ever rolled off the production line. The RS, the most adrenalin-charged Street Triple ever, increases peak power by a massive 16% while delivering 77Nm @ 10,000rpm up 13%. In addition to the impressive performance figures, each Street Triple model is fitted with new ride-by-wire throttle with up to 5 riding modes, new switchgear - including a 5-way joystick (R & RS), and a lighter free-flowing exhaust, revised gearbox and new slip and assist clutch. S O U T H W E S T S TA R S JOHN TRELA

W

ell-known local cricket personality John Trela, the former champion Marist seamer, recently represented Australia in the Over 50’s Indoor Cricket Masters Series in England. He is one of only two Western Australians to be selected, and his team won nine straight games before beating South Africa in the final. The Bunbury Life caught up with John for a chat. How long have you been playing the indoor version of the game? I started playing aged 22 so have now been playing for over 30 years. I was invited down to a social Sunday game by a group of friends and I enjoyed it so much I joined a local Bunbury team, which eventually lead to me playing A Grade Super League in Perth. In 1999, I was selected to play for the WA Over 35’s team and, since then, I have been playing state level indoor cricket around the country. In that time, I have had a number of All Australian selections and two Australian selections to tour South Africa in 2013 and England in 24 SPORT & RECREATION

2016. I also still play the Masters Super League in Perth. It was actually my friends at my indoor cricket club that persuaded me to join Marist CC which lead to a 25-year long career and a number of grand final wins. I am also now a life member at the club. What do you most enjoy about indoor cricket? I have always liked the fact that it’s a quick 2-hour version of the game and that everyone’s involved in batting, bowling and fielding. The skill sets are, of course, the same but the game is played in a compact area surrounded by side and top nets. All ages and abilities can play and it appeals to boys, girls, men and women. There are grades to suit all players and state and international tournaments to aspire to. Many teammates and competitors have become life-long friends to me - it’s a wonderfully sociable sport. Tell us about the Masters Series in England We sent five teams across - Over 35’s, Over 40’s, Over 45’s and Over 50’s Men and Over 35’s Women. A total of 7 players came from WA. The only team that fell short

Indoor cricket Monday to Friday Coaching by ACB accredited coaches Bowling machine hire was our women’s team that was beaten by South Africa by 9 runs in the final over of the final. Held this time in Birmingham, the tournament takes place every 3 years, with the last one being held in Johannesburg where I was part of the victorious Over 40’s team. Leading up to the tournament, we played a number of warm up games at different venues, which obviously got us into form as we proceeded to win all 9 of our group matches. That put us straight into the Grand Final, without having to play a semi-final, to play South Africa, who had beaten New Zealand in the only semifinal. We won the toss and batted first and reached 155 after our 16 overs. In reply, South Africa could only manage 59 from its 16 overs so we won by a convincing 96 runs. Man of the match was Andy Walton from Perth, the other WA representative in the team. Player of the tournament was Barry Morrison (Australia). What’s the next big tournament coming up? The next major tournament for me is the Masters Nationals to be held in Canberra in May. Then a TransTasman Series hosted by New Zealand in October, 2017. THE PLACE TO BE

W

ith the New Year in full swing now is a great time to be considering gym membership. Why not make 2017 the year when you finally achieve some of those fitness goals? Here are some great reasons why gym membership can be so rewarding:-

Wide range of equipment

This is the obvious one. Walk into a gym and you’ll be overwhelmed by the possibilities. Discover a huge choice of different cardio machines, as well as weight machines and free weights. Or, of course, there’s the pool. What’s more, everything is included in the cost of membership so you can mix it up as much as you want, working different muscles every day - an important way of ensuring you get the most out of your training. And, if you’re the kind of person that gets bored easily, why not change up your exercise session

and try something different rather than just doing the same old thing each day.

S o m e M E -t i m e

Escaping to the gym is a great way of getting some all-important time to yourself. Hop on a treadmill, pop the headphones in and it’s highly unlikely anyone will bother you (unless you hog the machines!). Mums and dads can use the crèche and hit the pool, gym or group fit classes to help maintain sanity while at the same time maintaining fitness levels.

Group fitness classes

If the treadmill isn’t quite your thing, there’s an entire timetable of fitness classes to take part in. You’ll be guided through everything by an instructor, and you can go hard-core, relax and meditate, or get wet in a wide range of classes.

I t ’ s m o t i vat i n g

Regular gym-goers are generally pretty happy and friendly (all those exercise endorphins help) so it’s a good place to make new buddies – especially for those doing regular classes. Or, why not organise to come along with a training partner? It’s easy to skip out on a run in the park but not so easy to skip out a session in the gym when meeting someone to train with. Finally, for that extra bit of motivation, why not try personal training sessions to get one-on-one attention and guaranteed results.

The above information was supplied by Leschenault Leisure Centre, Leisure Drive, Australind. Open seven days a week, the staff look forward to helping you achieve your goals. 28 SPORT & RECREATION

SUE KALAB SPECIALISING

IN WATERCOLOURS depicting Australian nature, Bunbury artist Sue Kalab began her professional art career in 1981 after moving to Mallacoota in Croajingolong National Park, Victoria. Here, she took inspiration from the natural beauty of the area, observing birds, nests, bush orchids and dolphins, her work a response to the power of natural images found during bush walks and beach wanders. After moving back to WA, Sue lived and worked in an Aboriginal community in the Pilbara before moving to Bunbury in 1995 where she established her beachside studio.

30 ART

Her style of work has been described by Perth arts writer Julie Prott as “cultivated rusticity,” while art critic Judith McGrath suggests the viewer “lingers and takes the time to engage with these powerful works of gentle beauty”. Others comment about its timelessness and meditative qualities whereas Sue herself describes her work as soft realism. "My work endeavours to portray the peaceful and serene qualities one finds in nature – the timelessness, the sense of perpetuity, and nature’s unobtrusiveness. I see great loveliness in the things I choose to paint and I try to touch a deep part of people’s nature.”

It’s also important to appreciate the feeling of traveling in time when comprehending the great age of our forest trees and balgas or grasstrees and to know they hark back to the days before Da Vinci painted “Mona Lisa”. And why forests are crucial to our endangered black cockatoos. It

Knocking Down To Rebuild The pros and cons BY THEO KRINOS

B

owling over an existing property to build the dream family home has become an Australian tradition. New dwelling commencements are at a national all-time high and, with a number of builders increasingly offering a tantalising range of upgrades as standard, it’s a great time to be building. The current home building boom is unlike no other that has come before. It’s the longest and largest in our country’s history and has provided an unprecedented economic boost to our nation. So why is our love affair with knocking down to rebuild so strong? What are the pros and cons when considering such a move and how can the process be effectively financed?

The Pros

There are a plenty of benefits to knocking down and building but these are the key advantages to be gained:• The home will be brand new and can be customised to fit family living requirements. 32 PROPERTY & FINANCE

• Building new will add value to the land parcel, increasing its resale value. • It can often be a cheaper process then buying a new property. It also affords flexibility in budgeting. Extra features can be added later when finances allow. • Maintenance costs will generally be lower on a new build with many fixtures and fittings under a manufacturer’s warranty and a structural warranty in place.

The Cons

There can be drawbacks and hidden financial issues during the process but these can be managed with careful planning:• A period of relocation will be required during the build, which can involve extra rental costs or a stay with family or friends. • Finding the right builder can be time-consuming and at times stressful. Check that the business is insured and registered with reputable organisations, such as

Financing The Build

Here, a number of options are available. For example, equity can be accessed from the land portion of the property or a construction loan can be taken out to release funds as the build progresses. Whatever the chosen path, a discussion with a local mortgage broker will help ensure a suitable loan product is selected.

roviding a one-off lump sum on the diagnosis of a serious medical condition, trauma insurance can offer important financial support and security at a stressful and difficult time. Typically covering conditions or occurrences, such as a major accident, heart attack, cancer diagnosis or stroke, trauma insurance can not only help pay for unexpected medical expenses but also help service existing debts. Advancements in medicine and improved cancer detection rates have had a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of Australians. However, accidents and serious illnesses can and do happen and the effect of cancer, heart disease or an accident can have a devastating financial impact on family life. A cancer diagnosis can typically cost the average Australian family around $50,000 when factoring in a loss of income or the required medical support. The ongoing treatment can also cost up to $10,000 in out of pocket expenses. Offering a reassuring financial back-up plan, trauma 34 PROPERTY & FINANCE

insurance helps take the worry out of the recovery process. In addition to immediate financial assistance, the lump sum can also allow for a complete lifestyle change, such as a reduction in the number of days worked or the chance to take time off from work and enjoy a stress-free holiday. It allows for a complete focus on healing, offering financial freedom when it’s most needed. It can also ensure access to the best possible range of treatments. Setting Financial Goals By Phil Di Candilo 2017 IS MOVING ALONG AT A FAST PACE and now

is the time to set those all important financial goals and to start to implement them. Not sure how to get going? Follow these simple steps as a starting point.

1

Begin with your existing financial situation. When did you last prepare a family balance sheet? Begin by listing current assets including superannuation, shares, savings in the bank and the family toys, such as the car, boat or caravan. Then list the debts, i.e., the balance on the home loan, outstanding credit card balances, personal loans and car loans. Use an Excel spreadsheet and then subtract the liabilities from the assets. Do you like what you see?

2

Add an extra column to the above and put in some values next to the existing assets and then add in the desired new assets required to build your ideal portfolio. Are you looking to change the family home, buy an investment property or upgrade the boat?

3 4

Next, make sure your partner is on board and then decide on how to achieve these financial goals.

Now it’s time to meet up with the bank manager or broker and to assess the family equity situation. Can any existing assets be leveraged off? If you haven’t been through this process over the last two or three years, it can be surprising how out of date current loan arrangements can be.

5

Depending on which assets are planned to be accumulated determines who to meet with next. Perhaps it’s the financial advisor for listed investments, a real estate agent to find the next property or the boat dealer for the upgrade. 36 PROPERTY & FINANCE

If looking to accumulate assets in 2017, then the following information is definitely worth bearing in mind.

1

We are coming off a market correction which has seen the cream come off the top of most asset values. This has brought prices back to a much more palatable level.

2

The financial gurus are predicting interest rates are unlikely to drop much more and increases might even be possible later in the year. Therefore, now could well be the time to make sure those low rates have been accessed. At RSM we are not financial advisors but we do have plenty of business experience and see plenty of upside in the long term. For those with a stable financial position, now is a great time to be leveraging off the current market to build a healthy balance sheet. Meet me for a one hour free consultation to kick start your wealth building plans. Just mention The Bunbury Life when booking the appointment.

HELLO TRAVEL BY NIKKI MACPHERSON

“THE PURPOSE OF LIFE IS TO LIVE IT, TO TASTE EXPERIENCE TO THE UTMOST, TO REACH OUT EAGERLY AND WITHOUT FEAR FOR NEWER AND RICHER EXPERIENCE.” ― Eleanor Roosevelt

There has never been a better time to travel than right now…with airfares dropping to their lowest prices ever, tour companies offering spectacularly enticing discounts and packaged “flop and drop” holidays caught in a constant price war, the idea of luxury and adventure is now within easier grasp than ever before.

5 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD TRAVEL STEP OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE This can mean different things to different people. My idea of stepping outside of my comfort zone is doing an adrenaline rushing sport like paragliding over the Swiss Alps, asking a random person on the street for directions while practicing my miming techniques, trying weird and wonderful foreign foods like Tarantulas in Cambodia (surprisingly delicious!). To somebody else, that same concept of stepping outside of your comfort zone may be something as simple as stepping onto the tube in London and hoping you get where you’re meant to! Push yourself to do, see and touch things that you normally wouldn’t or didn’t think you could do…it gives you an overwhelming sense of achievement and makes you feel alive! GAIN PERSPECTIVE When you travel, you realize exactly how much we take for granted. Pressures of everyday life build around us and daily stresses seem like they will never end. Then you see how the other half live. You see that there are people living with nothing but the clothes on their backs, enough food for a day or two and the dark history of their people lingering largely unspoken…but they have smiles on their faces and want nothing more than to engage with you, play with you, entertain and learn from you. All of a sudden, your problems don’t seem so heavy. LEARN NEW THINGS Languages - “Una Cerveza, Por Favor”….That’s one more beer please, I learnt that one in Mexico, even now 5 years later, still find myself uttering that phrase. History -Travelling makes history come alive. When you actually see where a historical moment took place, the stories are no longer just words in a book but actual memories which you will remember much longer than something you read in school. Random Facts -Did you know that warthogs are so

daft, that when they are being chased by a lion, quite often they forget mid run that they are being chased. So they just stop. And get munched. Go on a safari through the Masai Mara in Kenya and you’ll learn that one first hand! NEW EXPERIENCES This is the best part of travelling – the individual adventures that you just can’t get at home. Watching the glaciers break off and crash into the waters below in the Patagonian Fjords, roasting marshmallows over the heat of an active volcano in Guatemala. Singing Christmas Carols with the locals in Temple Bar, Dublin as the snow falls outside. Sloth spotting in Costa Rica, snorkeling with Manta Rays in Hawaii. There’s a never-ending check list of experiences to work your way through, each a memory to treasure forever. WHY NOT? I could give you a plethora of reasons why you should travel, and not a single reason why you should not. You don’t remember the money you spent. You remember the people you met, the food you devoured, the aromas, the noise, the stories. Whether it’s a week in Thailand or 3 months on a Round the World Trip, every time you travel, you take something, learn something, feel something new. This world is adventure on a platter…go see it! BOOK WITH HELLOWORLD We are a long established, local, family orientated travel agency with passionate friendly staff just aching to make your travel dreams come true. More often than not, we are able to price-match like for like quotations. We understand that people are price driven, but we also take the time to get to know you, to learn what makes you tick, what you do and don’t like, in order to give you the best options to suit YOU. Tailor made dream itineraries are our specialty, let us help you make yours come true!

id you know that women spend on average just ten minutes each day applying make-up? This often means using the same products day in and day out to create the same safe, tried and tested look. Yes, our busy lifestyles too often get in the way when we try to look our very best. So, this year, why not try and make a concerted effort to change. Make 2017 the year when you show off the new you. Reaching for the ever familiar foundation, bronzer or lipstick can hold us back from new makeup experiences. It may also be the wrong type of product for us. It’s a fact that most women wear the wrong type of foundation on a regular basis. Customising makeup ensures that the products you wear suit you as an individual. It’s as vital as choosing the right size of jeans, length of skirt or colour of shoes – get it wrong and the whole look is compromised. So while the weather is still warm and there’s still a lot of socialising to do, now is the perfect time to find out which products are best suited to you and your skin type. Discover the tones that work well for a classic natural look, your go-to fidelity colours or get a brand 48 HEALTH & BEAUTY

new look to match an upcoming special event. Highly trained beauty specialists can help find the types of products and colours that suit your own individual skin type and features. They can work with you to understand your own unique style as well as guiding you towards new looks for different occasions. Now is also a great time for decluttering the jam-packed makeup bag that’s full of lipsticks and eyeshadows that have been hardly used. Instead, choose a few select quality products. Buy less but buy the best. At The Beauty Shop, we specialise in offering consultations that advise on which makeup choices fit the personality and skin type of our clients to suit work, social or off-duty needs. We demonstrate how to use different techniques in applying particular products to create confidence in your brand new look. It really is time to show off the new you. AT J e a n e t t e E l l i o t t D E R M A L T H E R A P Y ocated within the Greater Bunbury Medical Centre, Jeanette Elliott Dermal Therapy offers skin solutions for men and women of all ages. The wide-ranging choice of procedures includes:-

Chemical Peels

These treatments are a safe and effective way of putting a little pep back into your complexion. Using a carefully applied, naturally-based acid formula, the peel removes the outer layers of damaged skin, revealing a clearer, fresher and brighter skin surface. Far from being damaging, astute chemical peeling actually supports and rebuilds the skin from deep within. Peels are tailored to all skin types and can be used for a variety of conditions ranging from acne scarring, hyper pigmentation, lines and wrinkles to photo damage, cuticle build-up, blackheads and deep congestion under the skin.

Skin Needling (ECIT)

Electro Collagen Induction Therapy (skin needling) is the natural alternative to wrinkle relaxers and cosmetic fillers. It is a non-invasive procedure that helps lessen the appearance of wrinkles, stretch marks, acne scars and pigmentation. It also repairs old piercings. Tiny micro needles are inserted into the skin creating thousands of perforations while using a topical anaesthetic for absolute comfort. These microscopic perforations stimulate the body's own natural electrical response, rather like acupuncture. The major cause of skin ageing and scarring is through collagen loss, which is determined largely by our genetics, although excess sun exposure can accelerate loss. The natural electro signals induce the body's natural human growth factor, increasing blood circulation to the penetrated area and stimulating collagen and elastin production. The result is beautifully repaired skin from the inside out without unnecessary damage to the epidermis and very little downtime.

IPL Permanent Hair Reduction

Jenette Elliott uses a state-of-the-art medical grade IPL system, which employs both traditional techniques and “in motion” technology designed to eliminate unwanted hair faster and more comfortably. The patented technology allows the treatment of sensitive areas without the discomfort often experienced with other systems. It gives unparalleled results with its 50 HEALTH & BEAUTY

constant motion that allows for a larger treatment area, quicker session times and fewer visits. The system gently heats the targeted hair follicles with gentle pulses of light based energy. Almost every part of the body can be treated, including the face, neck, legs, arms, nipples, underarms, bikini area, back, chest and stomach.

I P L P h o t o r e j u v e n at i o n

The “In-Motion” system for skin rejuvenation is an advanced, light-based type of IPL that offers increased energy, enhanced clinical results, integrated cooling for less discomfort and safer and more effective treatments. Intense Pulsed Light skin treatments are designed to treat the signs of photo-aging, helping to restore youthful looking skin. IPL is a revolution in cosmetic skin rejuvenation and treatments successfully improve sun damage, age spots, superficial vascular damage, rosacea, acne, melasma and numerous other skin imperfections. H E A LT H Y PETS CLUB

MAKING PET CARE EASIER

W

BY DR BRADEN COLLINS hen it comes to taking the very best care of pets, most pet owners will face the same regular issues. At our clinics, we find most owners are leading extremely busy lives and often are unable to remember to carry out simple tasks or required treatments. Whether it’s through losing track of time or a lack of time, a lack of clarity as to what is best for the pet or through concerns about the cost of providing the best care, the pet’s health can be compromised. To address this situation, we recognised a need to help pet owners take greater care of their pets and devised a special ‘set and forget’ solution. Our new Healthy Pets Club aims to solve the routine problems experienced with pet ownership.

Losing track of time

Studies have shown that most owners will administer their pet’s flea and worm medication around half as often as they should. This isn’t through a lack of good intention. It’s simply because time goes by quickly and it’s very easy to miss doses. At the Healthy Pets Club, members have their flea and worm treatments posted to them when they are due. All the owners need to do is to give the medication when it arrives and there is no need to remember dates.

A Lack of time

Most flea and worm medications come in packets, which will cover a pet for between three and six months. This means that at least once each year the owner will need to find the time to go to the vet or

52 ANIMAL HEALTH

pet store to get more treatments. However, because we post each dose out when it’s due, owners no longer need to find the time to duck out to buy medication.

in this area. We have crafted our Healthy Pets Club to protect our pets from local conditions so the pets will be receiving just what they need and nothing more.

Lack of clarity as to w h at i s b e s t f o r t h e p e t

Cost Concerns

Google any pet care topic and there will always be a huge amount of conflicting, and often inaccurate, information. Trying to sort the good information from the bad is extremely difficult even for experienced pet owners. Some information may also not be relevant to the south west of WA so what might be recommended in the eastern states or overseas often doesn’t apply here. With years of local experience, we know which diseases and parasites are prevalent

Providing high quality health care for a pet is never going to be cheap. So how does the Healthy Pets Club help? Firstly, because we have a 12 month commitment from pet owners, we can build a discount into the programme. A 25kg dog on the Healthy Pets Plus membership, visiting us twice a year, will save around $164. Secondly, members

also get unlimited free primary consultations. This can be really useful in instances where a pet owner isn’t sure if the pet needs to see a vet or not. They know they can bring the pet in to be checked and they won’t need to pay a consultation fee. All they need to pay for is any diagnostic tests and treatments. Healthy Pets Club Standard members also get a 10% discount on primary consultations and both Plus and Standard members get a 10% discount on revisits, microchipping and desexing, along with free nail clipping.

Restaurant Review

SMALLWATER ESTATE IT IS CLOSE TO FIVE YEARS since The Bunbury Life last paid a visit to award-winning winery Smallwater Estate and, during that time, the trophies and medals for its excellent wines have kept on coming. The latest major accolade for the winery was in the 2016 Winewise Small Vigneron Awards where its 2014 and 2015 Rob’s Block Cabernet Sauvignon both won gold. The awards pick out gold medal wines from the key wine shows around the country so competition is fierce but Smallwater Estate was one of only two WA wineries to win gold in the Cabernet Sauvignon category, and the only one from the Geographe region. High praise indeed! Having been reminded of the quality of the wines available from the cellar door at an impromptu wine tasting session on my arrival, I then turned my attention to the main reason for the visit – lunch in the winery’s impressive restaurant. Surrounded by stunning rolling countryside and with fabulous views over picturesque dams and the estate’s famous marron ponds, the

decked restaurant with its stylish café blinds enjoys an unrivalled backdrop. Having opened the restaurant in 2011, the menu has always had a marron-influenced theme but with plenty of other mouth-watering dishes on offer, it was going to be a tough choice while taking in the breathtaking vista. Joined for lunch by hosts John and Annie, I decided to order the Marron Chardonnay Pie. The signature dish on the current menu, the pie, topped with a perfectly light puff pastry, is created with Smallwater Estate Chardonnay and served with Kirrup greens, parsnip and sweet potato purée, a garden salad and baguette. This deliciously warming dish was the perfect choice for an unseasonably cool summer’s day with the distinctive, exquisitely-cooked marron proving to be a real highlight. Delicious! John, on the other hand, decided to order the Rosemary and Lamb Garlic Cutlets. A visual feast to the eye, this dish, served with spiced roasted potato wedges, red wine gravy and crunchy vegetables, looked absolutely magnificent. Going for a slightly lighter dish, Annie ordered the Honey and Lime Prawns with Mango Salsa. This striking and colourful dish, available on the list of entrées, features pan-fried prawns infused with honey, lime, chilli, garlic and ginger all served with a mango salsa. An ideal dish for those with a somewhat smaller lunchtime appetite, it is also one of a number of gluten-free choices available. Award-winning wines, great food and fantastic views, all within a short drive from Donnybrook and just 40 minutes from Bunbury, Smallwater Estate comes highly recommended whether it’s for lunch, dinner or for a relaxing wine tasting. My Favourite Dish

Pig and Pear Stacked Sandwich By Craig Lyons, The Townhouse GROWING UP, I SPENT A LOT OF TIME in the southern states of America and their love of slow cooked meats is something that has always stayed with me. Nothing quite compares to the smell of an open BBQ-style restaurant and the street food scene in America is unlike anything you have ever experienced. Our delicious Pig and Pear Stacked Sandwich came about as a way of combining my love of pulled pork and this style of food and through wanting to introduce Bunbury to something a little bit unique. Firstly, we take a locally-sourced shoulder of pork, which is then dry rubbed with our own blend of herbs and spices. The pork is then slowly braised for six hours on a bed of sliced onions and garlic to enhance the flavours before being carefully shredded to create the finished product. The dish's purple cabbage is slow cold-pickled for twenty-four hours to lock in all the flavours. Using this 56 FOOD & WINE

process also preserves the vibrant colours that make this dish stand out so well. This, combined with the melted brie, really helps balance out the richness of the pork. Pork and apple almost always go hand in hand but we wanted to throw caution to the wind so we combined ginger and pear in our homemade chutney - we think it really rounds out the flavours of this dish and makes it something a little leftfield. Finally, we stack it sky high on toasted Yallingup wood-fired sourdough bread - and The Townhouse Pig and Pear Stacked Sandwich is born. The finished product is both warming and full of flavour but we are especially proud that it is created, like all of our dishes, entirely with locally-sourced produce. Open 7 days from 7am to 5pm, visit The Townhouse at 39 Victoria Street or call 9721 3833.

LOVE, SWEAT AND GEARS! By ANNIE MALONE

TRAINING PARTNERS ARE VERY IMPORTANT. You spend a good part of your time with them, just like the people you work with. For six years now, I have been part of a team that completes a five day bike challenge in hot, dusty and physically challenging conditions, and a good training programme is paramount to the success of this challenge, especially as I get older. Eighty per cent of my training is done with my team member who doubles as my husband. Now this can be a good thing, as it’s nice to spend time with the one you love, or a bad thing because training gets tough and the one I love can get tough with me. All for the good of the team, of course! So while I’m busy getting fitter, what better time to practise obedience, tolerance, patience and other things that make for a healthy relationship ….with the one you love. Four weeks into our training programme, we began our Sunday long ride, a two and a half hour session with coach/husband on his fat tyre bike, a heavier bike to push so, therefore, he has a handicap, and Malone, that’s me, on my mountain bike. So off we start, taking our turns out front, rolling nice and smoothly through our rotations for the first hour. We chat every now and then, but usually we ride with our own thoughts. There’s no shortage of things to think about after a hectic week at work. Devising recipes I might try and the odd debate I can have with myself about some issue I have to resolve before Monday. All of this goes on while pumping the blood through those muscles to achieve the necessary workout. It’s a bit like scenic outdoors meditation except with more sweat and heavier breathing. Coach/husband brings me back to earth every now and again with words of encouragement or instructions on how to get the most out of my pedalling style. He 58 FOOD & WINE

is much more experienced in endurance events so, of course, I listen to him. With any team there must be a leader and coach/ husband is ours. When it’s time for drinks or an energy bar, coach/ husband will make the call with the added advice of, “Keep pedalling, its refuelling time not a rest time, Malone.” Sometimes, I will stay a little longer in front in a headwind to prove that I can pull my weight in the team and then I am suitably chastised by coach/husband for not sticking to the schedule. “Long rides are about even tempo to build strength,” he says. Apparently, I’m not helping my training by burning myself. I must be able to finish as strong as I started. This is all fantastic coaching, which I obediently, and patiently, take in most times…..until I get tired. At some point in the session, as the fatigue starts to set in, I am in front and decide to turn right only to be asked by coach/husband, “Where the hell do you think you’re going?” To which I reply, “I’m turning right to complete our course.” I’m told by coach/husband, who I am now thinking more as husband/coach, “We never turn right here, we always go straight.” To this I reply indignantly that, “Sometimes we go right here, we don’t always go straight.” For any passerby out walking their dog at this point, who happens to be listening to the exchange between two tired cyclists, the scene must be quite amusing. As the dust settles, and we go straight as coach/ husband has instructed, the conversations in my head about husband/coach go something along the lines of, “well just because he is the coach, it doesn’t mean that

he is always right and there was no reason to shout at me like that. Does he think I’m an idiot and can’t make a decision? Haven’t I been working hard on the bike and doing everything I have been told, tempo, keep it even, drink, keep pedalling, relax your shoulders, rotate, use your gears and keep it smooth. I’ll show him smooth.” Coming up to the last corner, 1km from home, I slowly speed up my tempo and pedal hard but smoothly all the way around the corner hoping to catch him unaware and gain distance on him. As I sneak a look under my arm to see if it has worked, coach/husband is right on my wheel and smiling. “I’ve taught you well, Malone,” he says. Oh well, I nearly showed him, I think to myself, and have a little smile as well. And so ends another good training workout with the one I love. Coach/husband, husband/coach….. one and the same. elcome to our latest update on the news and happenings around the Geographe wine region. North Boyanup-based Bonking Frog Wines is excitedly getting ready for its third Upcycle Garden Art Competition. Held as part of the Dardanup Art Trail, the competition builds on the winery’s desire to create a sustainable future by exploring the creative potential of recycling, repurposing and upcycling materials into decorative outdoor pieces. Taking place from Saturday 29th April to Sunday 7th May, the 2017 event’s theme is “Moment in Time”, which could relate to historical, mythological or even religious moments. With a large number of entries received for the 2016 competition, successful entrants to this year’s competition can win a number of great prizes, including a $2,000 cash prize presented to the overall winner and the People’s Choice Award worth $1,000 in cash and wine. There is also a special Viewer’s Prize, which can be won by simply voting for a favourite artwork. The winner will receive wine to the value of $350 and a signed copy of the limited edition, hard cover ReDiscover book.

Open daily from 11am to 5pm, the exhibition closes at 5pm, Sunday 7th May. For further details and an application form, email julie@bonkingfrog.com.au Saturday 1st April sees Donnybrook winery Barton Jones Wines hosting an entertaining night of sea shanties performed by The Lost Quays, an 11-voice, male acapella chorus of musicians from Fremantle. Singing shanties and other songs from the sea, with a little mandolin, accordion and guitar also thrown into the mix, a night of gusto, humour and occasional mischief is promised. Many of the songs performed will be traditional, and the band’s rhythmic and energetic stage presence makes it perfect for singing along with them! Tickets are priced between $40 and $68 and include a glass of the winery’s award-winning 2015 Semillon on arrival and a delicious seafood supper. Tickets are on sale now. Barton Jones Wines has recently announced three new release wines, 2015 Cabernet Shiraz, 2015 'The Bigwig' Shiraz and 2015 'The Top Drawer' Cabernet. Worthy candidates for cellaring, they can also be enjoyed from release and feature plenty of fruit intensity and soft ripe tannins. Plus, the winery has put to bottle its Shilly Shally Chenin Blanc, the first of its

2016 vintage wooded white wines. Only 100 cases were made so this will be a cellar door only wine available from March. Visitors to this year’s Harvey Harvest Festival on 19th March will have an extra reason to come to town with an Art Safari taking place on the same day. Designed to showcase the wealth of talent in the region, friends Karen Whittock from Chalbury Park Bed and Breakfast and Julie Moloney from Fifth Estate Wines have been planning the event for some time since their involvement with the successful Bunbury Tree Street Art Safari. Free buses will run from the festival site to a number of places of interest and visitors can get off the hop-on, hop-off bus at selected locations, including the Visitor Centre and the Old Church, where art will be displayed. One of the feature attractions will be Chalbury Park Bed and Breakfast with its magnificent gardens. These gardens will be a key location for art displays, artists in-residence, food, live music and wine tasting with Fifth Estate Wines and visitors are encouraged to stroll through the gardens and take in the art until sunset. The Art Safari free bus will run from 10am with the

Upcycle garden art at Bonking Frog Wines last bus scheduled for 3pm. For further details, contact Julie on 0419 851269 or email info@fifthestatewines. com.au Ferguson Valley-based winery Green Door Wines has a Good Nights gig booked at the cellar door on Saturday 18th March, featuring singer Joel Barker. Good Nights is the brainchild of Bunbury resident Kelsie Miller and supports emerging artists through pop-up concerts in alternative venues across the Greater Bunbury region. Come and enjoy some great music while relaxing with friends on the deck with some award-winning wine and great food. Tickets are limited and can be purchased through the Good Nights Facebook page. Donnybrook winery Oakway Estate has recently announced the dates for its 2017 Long Table lunches with the first lunch, an Asian Fusion, to be held on

Sunday 19th March. Utilising guest chefs to match a menu to suit Oakway Estate's award-winning wines with the freshest local ingredients, advanced bookings to these lunches are essential as seating is limited. Go online for ticketing information and further details and don't forget that the winery now also offers craft beer on tap. Hot on the heels from winning five Gold, two Silver and one Bronze Medal from eight wines entered into the Geographe Wine Show, the coming months will see a hive of activity at St Aidan Wines as the 2017 vintage commences. The winery also has a final outdoor cinema evening remaining in its “Film on the Ferguson” series on Friday 10th March. Featuring the movie Lion, the showing begins at 7.30pm and gates will open at 5.30pm. Guests are encouraged to settle on the lawn, enjoy a picnic or a snack from the kitchen together with a glass of award-winning wine or an ice-cold beer. Jim Harte is scheduled to play some old favourites as the sun sets prior to the movie. Hampers are available to pre-order, go online at www.saintaidan.com.au for further details. Renowned for its Italian varieties with their origins in north-west Italy, Vineyard 28 is delighted to announce the release of its 2015 Nebbiolo this autumn – a wine that was recently awarded a Silver Medal at the Australian Alternative Wine Show held in Mildura, Victoria, last year. The original home of Nebbiolo is the relatively small, hilly and misty corner of north-west Italy, known as the Piedmont. Nebbiolo takes its name from Nebbia or fogs that fill the steep-sided valleys of the region. Nebbiolo is one of the first varieties to bud each spring but has a long ripening season and is generally the last to be harvested each year. Wines from Nebbiolo are often characterised by their ample amounts of acidity and tannins and, therefore, often benefit from several years’ ageing. Vineyard 28 has been growing Nebbiolo for over fifteen years. Ray Jordan reviewed the 2015 Nebbiolo in his 2017 West Australian Wine Guide, giving it 92 out of 100. He commented, “The palate has a beautiful medium-bodied dry savouriness with spices and light raspberry cherry Vineyard 28 Nebbiolo 2015

Ivan, a relative new comer to the Australian comedy scene, migrated from Venezuela in 2012 to pursue a career in the tough Australian stand-up comedy scene. His short but stellar career has seen sold out performances at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Melbourne Comedy Festival, winner of Best Newcomer at the Sydney Comedy

Festival 2016 and his very own ABC sitcom, Lost in Translation, on ABC iView. Get ready for this Salsa dancing ball of energy, who will quickly become your new favourite comedian. With a killer cast of Australian stars, talented newcomers and international performers, all comedy tastes are covered. Featuring everything from standup to sketch, slapstick to song, this year’s line-up presents the best of the Festival in one hilarious show.

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow plays at BREC on Saturday 3 June at 6pm and 9pm. Tickets are now on sale from www.bunburyentertainment.com or call 1300 661 272.
