It was at age 15 that Spyrou first started out as a cutter for a local clothing manufacturer whilst learning the art of pattern making at college. Introducing a number of new women’s brands into the Australian market over the coming years, it was in 1998 that he finally amalgamated all of his brands under one label, George. Today George continues to enhance its reputation for stylish, beautiful garments whilst incorporating the latest international trends. Spyrou’s passion for dressing women has created an iconic Australian brand. Outdoor Living

Making the most of your outdoor space

With more hours of sunshine that any other state, Western Australia provides the perfect climate for those who enjoy the outside life. Not only are we blessed with hot dry days, we also enjoy gloriously balmy evenings, perfect for entertaining family and friends. So how can we make the most of our outside space at this time of the year?

Outdoor Kitchen The ultimate statement in outdoor living, the outdoor kitchen is all the rage. After all, if the kitchen is the centre of the home inside, then it should follow that an outdoor kitchen creates the same great entertaining area outside. So get rid of that tired old BBQ and, if the bank balance is willing, transform your outside space with a grill, fridge, sink and maybe even a pizza oven or wine storage area. You’ll be the envy of your friends, family and neighbours. Plus, you’ll never have to make those trips between the inside cooker and the outside table again! 24

Furnishings Furnishing your outside area is one of the keys to creating a comfortable and versatile outdoor living space. Create workable spaces that provide relaxing areas for socialising, i.e. don’t fall into the trap of arranging all of your chairs up against one outside wall. Position your furniture just as you would in your indoor living areas and create the intimate feel of a lounge area or living room. Finally, try to experiment with brighter colours. Complement the tones and hues of your garden with colourful cushions and throws and embrace the outdoors.

Underfoot Cracked, dirty or uneven paving slabs can soon take the edge off a well-planned outdoor entertainment area. If the area is uncovered, poured liquid limestone is the perfect, low-maintenance, stylish way to smarten up ... cont. pg 26

and the odd scratch from overactive kids, it will transform the look of an outside area.

the outside space. The combination of stone and cement makes it extremely strong and durable whilst even on the hottest days it remains cool underfoot. Plus, being poured as one piece there are no gaps for unsightly weeds to grow through or burrowing ants to form anthills. Just seal it once it goes down and remember that in the event of needing to access burst pipes underneath, it’s not possible to just remove one slab!

Lighting Just like inside the home, the mood and ambience of an outdoor living area is often influenced by the lighting. Choosing the right lighting will create an inviting area for spending time after dark whilst lighting up popular areas of the garden. Try installing LED lights in decking or in the roof of a pergola. Use solar powered lighting to create walkways or to highlight plants, and use lanterns or candles to create a soft ambience.

Decking is an increasingly popular way of creating a natural, luxurious feel to an outside area. Again, ideal in summer conditions, a deck is a real statement in style. Generally a more expensive option than pavers, its drawback is that once down it will require regular maintenance including oiling at least twice a year and sanding. If you can put up with that

Bi-fold Doors The phrase ‘bringing the outside in’ was tailor-made for bi-fold doors. Incredibly stylish whether made from hardwood or aluminium, 26

they open up a world of possibilities for the entertaining area. Recent innovations mean that it’s now possible to buy bi-folds with retractable flyscreens. Simply open up your doors, draw the screen across and your outside entertaining space connects at once with the inside.

Plants In the same way that accessories complement furniture, well thought out and cleverly arranged plants can add the ideal finishing touch. In our harsh climate, try to pick water-wise plants that will survive without constant watering and space them out to create a structured feel. Cordylines are perfect for creating low cost, low maintenance, colourful borders around entertaining areas.

Golf Tips

with Craig Tapp

Hi Mandurah golfers! I hope you are all playing well and enjoying our beautiful selection of world class courses. As I write this article, I am sitting here in the glorious sunshine under the pergola at Meadow Springs Golf and Country Club, thinking to myself how lucky we Mandurah golfers are with such great courses to play on. Not only well designed, they are both accessible and affordable. The Melbourne SandBelt is regarded as Australia’s finest golf destination purely for the number and quality of courses and many other destinations, including the Gold Coast, Hunter Valley, Murray River and Mornington Peninsula, also stake a claim. However, I believe that the Peel region with its high ranking courses, like The Cut, Meadow Springs and Links Kennedy Bay, combined with the excellent members’ course at Mandurah Country Club, proves the Peel is also a worthy contestant for the best golf destination in Australia. Over the last few weeks, I have had more and more of my students asking me about how they can get more power in their golf swing. I think some of this may be due to the exploits of Adam Scott and how he has basically overpowered his rivals in the major Australasian tour events. Now, of course we are not all built like Adam Scott (much to the dismay of all of our partners), tall with long levers and strong flexible torsos, but if we understand the mechanics, we can all maximise our swings to hit the ball as far as we possibly can. Firstly, it’s important to make a big turn and get our backs facing the target. So, for me that means chewing on a half-dozen Nurofen Plus

and rubbing in half a tube of Voltaren before throwing down 3 or 4 middies! If you are not as professional as me, just complete your turn as far as you can without moving off the ball. You must turn around your spine not transfer your weight to the back foot. Now, this is the important part; you must start your downswing by rotating your pivot around to the left towards the target. This will create leverage in the golf swing and increase club head speed. Most people I teach try to hit it further by hitting harder with their arms, in turn using a lot of effort and creating minimal club head speed in the process. If you watch Adam Scott, he puts in a huge turn going past 90 degrees, then rotates aggressively through the ball before finishing on the left foot with his belt buckle facing left of the target. Get down the range and give it a go and I am sure you will see the ball flying much further down the fairway. If not, give us a buzz at the Peel Golf Academy and we’ll help you get started. Good luck and good golfing!

Mercedes-Benz CLA

The all-new 4 door coupé with jaw-dropping looks!

That well-used expression, ‘first impressions count’, should have been created just for the Mercedes Benz CLA. Here at The Mandurah Life, our first glimpse of the car was a few months ago on the Mercedes-Benz portal. Captivated by its sweeping curves and thrilling lines, it was one of those moments that sticks in the memory. Now a few months on as we finally view this magnificent new addition to the Mercedes range, we can report that the CLA is just as impressive, if not more so, in the flesh. Pitched between the A-Class and C-Class, the CLA is in some ways a slightly difficult car to pigeon-hole. This is most certainly a complement. Historically, all great designs when first

sighted create the same conundrum and the new CLA is no different. Described by some as an extended A-Class and taking inspiration from the SLK, its similarity though to the gorgeous CLS is unmistakeable. Almost ten years on from the launch of that ground-breaking 4-door coupé, a car considered the prettiest of all Mercedes-Benz models, the CLA takes its cue from that sleek, stylish package to create a “the Mercedes CLA offers beautifully scaled a compelling package that down version that loses none of the CLS seems set to convert a new glamour. The wave of motorists over to the wonderful, sloping roofline is not just famous three-pointed star” about the looks though. Its wind resistance properties give the car a drag coefficient of 0.23 meaning it cuts through the air more efficiently than any other car on the market. Now that’s impressive! Available in four different guises, this front-wheel drive sedan starts at ... cont. pg 43 41

motoring around $49,900 plus on-road costs. So yes, it’s affordable too! The three-strong petrol line-up includes the CLA 200, CLA 250 Sport and the CLA 45 AMG whilst the diesel offering is the CLA 200 CDi. Initially, in Australia, it’s just the CLA 200 and CLA 45 AMG available, with the 250 Sport and 200 CDi planned for early 2014. The 4-cylinder 1.6 litre CLA 200, fitted with 7G-DCT automatic transmission is likely to be the popular choice with buyers. Delivering 115kW of power and 250Nm of torque and capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in around 8.5 seconds, it effortlessly achieves its top speed of 210km/h. A combined cycle fuel consumption of 5.7 litres per 100km and CO2 emissions of just 133g/km adds to the appeal. Inside, the cabin provides a luxurious escape from the outside with its standard satnav screen taking pride of place above striking aviation-style air vents, all set amongst plenty of stylish aluminium trim. A high-tech media interface also offers a wide range of

entertainment related functions. For those looking for thrills and plenty of kerb appeal, the CLA 45 AMG delivers both in spades. Available in permanent all-wheel drive, the AMG version is instantly recognisable through a combination of its throaty roar, head-turning looks and vast array of equipment as standard. Delivering an astonishing 265kW of power and 450Nm of torque, 0-100km/h is achieved in a blistering 4.6 seconds before the car surges to a top speed of 250km/h. Hold onto your hats! A game-changer for the segment, the Mercedes CLA offers a compelling package that seems set to convert a new wave of motorists over to the famous three-pointed star. Go take a look for yourself. Volkswagen CC

Luxurious 4-door sedan gets a rebrand

First launched into the Australian market in 2009 as the Passat CC, this unmistakably European-designed 4-door sedan was pitched as a larger and more refined version of its smaller sibling. Showing a distinct resemblance, with its sweeping lines and flowing curves, to the Mercedes CLS and BMW 6-series Gran Coupé, and priced considerably cheaper, it made an immediate statement amongst luxury car buyers. 4 years on and a rebranded, repackaged CC is now available down under and the good news is that it has lost none of its kerbside appeal. In fact, with some significant upgrades to the car’s exterior, the updated version looks even more impressive. It also has a new name. For 2013, the new model has dropped the word Passat to be now known simply as the CC. This to us a great “Visually, the CC is just makes deal of sense as, as striking as ever” although the CC originally shared the underpinnings of the Passat, in reality it was a very different car. Neither the Passat nor CC shared any body panels; the cars looked vastly different and the CC was always pitched at the luxury end of the market. Now, with a re-designed Passat also available, buyers of VW mid-size sedans have 2 very different cars to choose from. Visually, the CC is just as striking as ever. For the new model, VW has given the car a new 3-bar chrome grille and bi-xenon headlights are accentuated by standard LED daytime running lights. A tweaked front bumper and hood together with more sculpted side sills complete the look. Inside, the CC adds a fatigue detection system, an RCD 310 radio-CD system, stainless steel door sill plates and safety head restraints. The major difference inside the car, however, is the phasing out of the twin bucket-style seats in the back and the addition of a centre seat to allow accommodation for 5. It still looks like a coupé but the extra seating offers greater flexibility for potential buyers and is a clever move. The engine line-up with the new model remains the same with a 2.0L TDI turbo-charged diesel engine (125TDI) or 44

motoring 3.6L FSI petrol engine (V6 FSI) available. The V6 petrol offers no end of punch, delivering 220kW @6600rpm and 350Nm of torque and, with the six-speed automated DSG transmission allowing for incredibly smooth gear-shifting, the car achieves 0-100km/h in just 5.6 seconds. As well as being seriously quick, the all-wheel drive 4Motion system continues to provide a wonderfully assured drive in all road conditions.

With its high-quality build, unbeatable looks and impressive performance, the CC seems set to continue to build on its increasing popularity. Volkswagen Jetta The mid-sized sedan at a small car price

One of Volkswagen’s best known brands, the Volkswagen Jetta, now in its sixth generation, has been produced by the German luxury car maker since 1979. Over the years, the car has been marketed under different names, more specifically in Australia as the Vento and then the Bora, although the last 2 generations have reverted back to the Jetta badge. With over 10 million units sold worldwide since its inception, it remains one of Volkswagen’s modern success stories and the latest model offers plenty of reasons to give it serious consideration. Originally designed to be the booted version of the Golf hatchback, the current incarnation is the first not to share any of the golf’s body panels although it still borrows a few things from under the hood. However, what’s significant about the evolution of the Jetta is the fact that each generation of the car has got progressively bigger, resulting in today’s Jetta being more than capable of comfortably accommodating 5 adults and their luggage. With rear legroom particularly spacious and a large boot capacity of 510 litres, in short, its size and capacity more than befits its positioning as an elegant mid-sized sedan. Currently available in Australia in 4 guises, 118TSI, 118TSI Comfortline, 103TDI Comfortline and 147TSI Highline, as expected from Volkswagen safety levels are high, build quality exceptional and standard features numerous. The entry level 118TSI is fitted with a 1.4L 48

twin-charged petrol engine that delivers 118kW of power @5800rpm and a maximum torque of 240Nm. Available in 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG, the car comes with a 5 Star ANCAP safety rating and is priced at around $25K driveaway. The Comfortline option, available in just 7-speed DSG adds a few extra luxuries including parking sensors, 16-inch alloys and climate control and is priced around the $30K mark. The diesel-powered 103TDI Comfortline with its 2.0L TDI turbocharged engine offers 103kW of power @4200rpm and 320Nm of torque. With numerous safety features it also includes 16-inch alloys, parking sensors and climate control. Priced at around $33K, and available with a 6-speed DSG gearbox it offers great value for money as a cheap-to-run family sedan. Finally, the top of the range Jetta, the 147TSI Highline, continues in the mould of offering plenty of power and fruit at an affordable price. At around $37K driveaway, its 2.0L TSI turbocharged petrol engine delivers 147kW of power at 5100rpm and 280Nm of torque propelling the car from 0 to 100km/h in just 7.2 seconds. Available with additional extras including 17-inch alloys, a 6-disc CD changer and leather upholstery, it’s more than worth the extra cost. With its stylish European looks, excellent specification and competitive pricing, the Jetta offers the perfect choice for buyers looking for a mid-sized sedan with a quality pedigree. For more information and pricing on the Volkswagen Jetta, contact Barbagallo Volkswagen Mandurah on 9587 9999 or visit their showroom at 140 Pinjarra Road.

BMW X5

Luxury third-generation SAV hits the streets!

Often credited for creating the luxury SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) market, a segment that has since seen many imitators, the BMW X5 is the world’s bestselling premium SAV. With over 1.5 million units sold worldwide since its launch in 1999, it is also Australia’s most popular luxury vehicle of its type. There’s no doubting the importance attached to the X5 at BMW! With the new release of the third generation understandably interest has been high and with a raft of new features, improved technology and new styling, there’s no doubt that competitors will once again be anxiously watching from afar. Visually, the new BMW X5 sports a much enhanced look. With a more focused front end, bolder lines combine with a broader kidney grille, new headlights and wider choice of newly available colours. The rear also gets redesigned taillights and a cleaner, more modern design. The evolution of the car has given the X5 a sharper visual edge.

motoring Three models are available from launch and each deliver impressive performance and fuel efficiency upgrades from the outgoing models. First up is the BMW X5 xDrive30d powered by a 3.0L diesel engine delivering 190kW of power and 560Nm of torque. Powering from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, an improvement of 0.7 of a second on the previous model, average fuel economy has also been improved by 1.2 litres per 100kms to 6.2 litres. Next, is the BMW X5 Xdrive50i powered by a 4.4L twin-power turbo V8 that develops 330kW of power and 650Nm of torque. Tearing from 0 to 100km/h in just 5 seconds flat, another improvement, its blistering performance will mean the kids are never late for school again! Average fuel economy has also improved by 2 litres per 100kms to 10.5 litres. Finally, the flagship, M-Performance BMW X5 M50d, has also benefitted from the latest in technical know-how. Retaining the same six-cylinder diesel engine as the 30d, the M50d uses three turbochargers to deliver 280kW of power and a huge 740Nm of torque. Cruising from 0 to 100km/h in 5.3 seconds, its average fuel economy of 6.7 litres of diesel per 100kms is down almost a litre from the previous version. If all that wasn’t enough, the new BMW X5 has also been given a significant upgrade to its list of standard features. The entry level xDrive30d now gets 19-inch alloys, bi-xenon headlights, LED “The evolution of the car front fog lights, high-beam assist and anti-dazzle interior and has given the X5 a sharper exterior mirrors. A Driving visual edge” Assistant package also includes lane departure warning, forward collision warning, pedestrian warning and a 360 degree surround view. Also included is a navigation system with voice control, internet functionality and hi-fi loud speaker system. Step up to the xDrive50i and get 20-inch alloys, ceramic surrounds for interior controls and a striking BMW individual leather instrument panel whilst the M50d is further improved with a new adaptive suspension package to enhance performance and ride refinement. Perhaps most impressively despite all of these upgrades the new BMW X5 sees only a very minor revision to its prices. Coupled with its combination of comfort, practicality and performance it’s a package that is extremely hard to ignore. For further information and pricing on the new BMW X5, contact Auto Classic in Victoria Park on 9311 7533, or Westcoast BMW in Wangara, on 9303 5888. 51

Accounting with Murray Blakers

The accounting industry’s best kept secret!

I have been providing my accounting services to clients for almost 30 years now and in that time I have seen small businesses become increasingly burdened with red tape and tax. For every improvement in technology there seems to be ten more things that a small business owner needs to do for the government. Surely, in this time of vastly improved technology, business owners shouldn’t be have to spend hours, even days, filling out forms? Why should the average person have to become a tax expert just to pay tax? The ATO and government have continually added to the burden on small business and GST has made every small business owner a tax collector on behalf of the ATO. Well, there is some hope. To help reduce the current tax burden on businesses, accountancy firms, such as ours, now offer BankLink, a new accounting system that has quietly helped frustrated and stressed business owners get back to doing what they are good at. Running their business! The system doesn’t require a bookkeeper or cashbook and subscribers don’t need to be a computer whiz either! As a matter of fact, it’s possible to do it without a computer! The most accurate system we have ever used, the

average client input required is just 20 minutes per month and the system produces up to date reporting when required. BAS reporting is on time every time, no dates or deadlines are missed and it actually costs 80% less than popular business accounting software packages. One of the key advantages to the system is that it is designed to drastically simplify the whole accounting process. By virtually eliminating manual data entry and the collection of receipts and bank statements, business owners no longer have to spend hours doing the books using complex, expensive software. Do nothing, or do it all, it’s your choice. Designed for small businesses, clients using this system include tradespeople, car dealers, retailers, rental property owners, café owners, farmers and, yes, accountants! So, save time and money, improve ATO audit results and reduce stress levels. The system described above incorporates BankLink software and is provided only through accountants, such as BMC Accounting, by Banklink Australia. For further information on the above, contact BMC Accounting at 133a Mandurah Terrace, Mandurah, call 6365 2170 or email theteam@BMCaccounting.com.au 56

Two glass bridges span the reflection pond; one leading to the spacious home cinema and the other to the impressive guest suite which also overlooks the swimming pool. With an abundance of impressive features too numerous to list here, the unique style of this luxurious home makes a statement like no other. Until next issue,

Hello, I’m Boyd. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to discover Boyd Design and hope you find my ramblings interesting, informative, helpful and sometimes entertaining. So let’s dive straight in. On the drawing board right now is a stunning, tri-level, under-croft home located on the Wannanup canals. With its feature, timber clad, boxed projections and angular stone walls leading to the under-croft garage, this house makes quite a statement and is something very special indeed. Personal Finance Tips Five New Year’s resolutions that should be kept!

The New Year is the perfect time to sort out personal finances. After the Christmas and summer holiday spending frenzy, it is also often forced upon us! So here are five top tips for a more prosperous 2014. 1. Mortgages. For most people our biggest financial commitment. But how many of you know the actual interest rate you are paying on your mortgage? Instead of just accepting that interest rates go up and down, shop around and look to re-mortgage. Borrowing rates are at all-time lows and the mortgage market is extremely competitive with plenty of good deals around. Chances are by spending some time researching, you’ll find a cheaper lender. It may even be possible to negotiate a better deal with your current lender! 2. Savings. Of course, falling or low interest rates are never good news for savers, but don’t despair. Again do you know the rate you receive from your bank? If you can afford to leave your savings untouched in an account over a long period, check out term deposit rates amongst different lenders. You may find that your so called ‘high interest’ account actually lags well behind current term deposit rates in the market. Go online - it takes just a few minutes! 3. Credit Cards. If you have one or more credit cards, chances are you are paying through the nose on interest payments. Make

it a priority to pay at least one of these off this year. If it means literally cutting up the card then do it. If you can’t afford to pay it off then at least get into the habit of paying off your total monthly spend every statement period, thereby not adding to the interest owed. Make 2014 the year you try and live within your means! 4. Consolidate Your Debts. Credit cards, car loans, even loans taken out to pay for holidays or Christmas could all conceivably be rolled into one. They can even be added to an existing home loan. By consolidating all your loans into one monthly payment you could not only save thousands of dollars but even reduce the term of the loan. 5. Protect Your Personal and Financial Assets. Insure your life, your family, your health, your business and your home. Then use the services and advice of qualified taxation and trust professionals to find out whether there are legal and legitimate ways in which you can reduce your overall taxation burden. Look after your personal interests today and ensure that your financial assets are protected for the future. The above article should not be taken as investment advice. The Mandurah Life recommends readers seek the services of a qualified financial adviser before putting any of the above ideas into practice. 61

Beach Photography

Beach photography appeals to so many keen photographers as there are countless opportunities for securing a great photo. This unique environment lends itself to trying many different styles, including macro photography, seascape shots, sunset photos, wildlife photos and sporting photos, and it’s also an ideal place to try for great family photos and portraits. Whatever your thing, the most important factor to consider at the beach is the sheer amount of light. There won’t be many brighter conditions for taking photos than at an Australian beach, particularly at midday, with the harsh overhead sun. The white sand and the sun reflecting off the water make for some very challenging conditions. Therefore, it is really important to get exposures correct. Be aware that when shooting on auto mode most cameras will underexpose in bright sun and although sometimes this can work to the photographer’s advantage, on average it will achieve average results. The best way to overcome this is to bracket exposures. Take a photo that you think is exposed correctly and then re-take the picture exposed one or two stops under, and the same again one or two over overexposed. There are a few HDR (high dynamic range) and photo-

merge programmes that can merge photo exposure and give the photo more depth. So, if you are a stickler for perfection, check out this option. If that sounds like too much hard work, try changing the light meter mode if the camera has the option. Switch it to spot metering and point the exposure/focus meter at the desired object. This should now be exposed appropriately and remember, it is better to ... cont. pg 64 62

art & photography have the background overexposed than faces underexposed. The other option is to use some fill flash to expose faces nicely that would otherwise be in shadow under hat brims or similar. Set the camera to 100 ASA or slower for bright sun situations (125 sec at f16 - f22 should be a good area to start). It’s often possible to get great shots just before sunrise when the light is at its lowest and just after sunset, usually for about half an hour. So don’t pack up and go home at sunset as you may regret it! There’s nothing worse than watching the gorgeous colours in the sky as you drive home! It is also often rewarding to play around with underexposing photos to saturate colours. Helpful extras to ensure a successful shoot at the beach include a lens hood to filter out any unwanted sun or haze and a polarising filter to help saturate the blue of the sky.

By Deborah Zibah Artist Deborah Zibah is an exuberant and colourful character filled with a passionate zest for life and an irrepressible pursuit for excellence within her arts practice. Born in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zibah and her family were dispossessed from their home and immigrated to Australia settling in Mandurah. Zibah’s ‘FOUND: Once I was lost...’ exhibition at INQB8 in January is formulated from a hybrid of experiences, blending inherent influences from her native African origins with the physical and spiritual locality of her adopted country, Australia. This collage of cultural influences seeks to define her sense of belonging in this second homeland and explore her physical and spiritual identity as they interrelate with her direct environment. Butterfly imagery, is used symbolically as a metaphor for ‘self’, defining Zibah’s spiritual beliefs. The exhibited paintings deliver abstracted butterfly features, faces and local flora and fauna within the Mandurah locale. They differ dramatically from Zibah’s more process driven, commercial style paintings which have in the past consisted of primarily large homogenous, abstract landscapes on board characterised by combinations of fluid bitumen, resins and acrylics.

Exhibition Review

Found: Once I was lost ........

She says taking the opportunity to define her sense of self, without using landscape or her familiar abstract symbols as vehicles for communication has been an immense challenge. “It is very rare that the subject matter for my paintings is figurative and this exhibition has presented a wonderful opportunity for me to explore, and develop, this new concept.” Many of the works portray Zibah’s strong sense of spirituality where clues are given to viewers through her titles such as ‘I am Free’, ‘I am Lost’, ‘I belong’, ‘I Dance’, ‘I am Eagle’ and ‘I am Warrior’. Zibah’s connection with God is explored in her painting ‘Where do I feel at Home?’ Although most works are two dimensional using explorative combinations of materials such as wood stain, ink, wax crayon, industrial enamel and bitumen, Zibah has also experimented with three dimensional from in a sculptural piece using sticks and twigs collected from her natural environment. ”I have only very limited experience with sculpture but I felt the time was right to pursue some simple sculptural materials to accompany the concept for the paintings.” “The paintings are a vehicle to talk about how my life in a foreign nation, has been enhanced by the knowledge and experience of a loving Creator, and that no matter where I am, I feel safe and secure in His arms.”

Introducing... Medik8 Skin Needling

A safe and simple skin renewal technique

takes about 30 to 45 minutes and the tiny wounds close up within an hour. After the procedure skin may be red and flushed in appearance with mild sensitivity to the touch. This diminishes after a few hours and the skin is completely healed with 48 hours. Within 5 days there is barely any evidence of the procedure. Visible signs of rejuvenation are typically seen within 6 to 8 weeks and will continue for up to one year. A course of 3 sessions is recommended at 6 to 8 week intervals to achieve optimum results. A virtually pain-free, totally safe treatment, the procedure can be used on wrinkles and lines, scarring, acne and chickenpox scars, enlarged pores, sun damaged skin, under-eye bags, stretch marks, cellulite, and to help improve skin firmness and elasticity. Results can also be enhanced by using the Personal Titanium Dermaroller on a daily basis in between treatments. Medik8 Skin Needling is now available in Mandurah at Total Skin and Body Centre Day Spa. For further information, call 9535 4530 or visit them at Unit 2/2A, Peel Street (next to the Atrium Hotel).

Skin needling is an increasingly popular way of restoring the youthful appearance of skin. Producing similar results to dermabrasion, lasers and deep chemical peels, treatments do not require the removal of the epidermis and are therefore considerably less invasive. The result is a quicker healing process, little, if no, downtime, and a significant cost saving. The concept of needling is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage such as a cut or burn. Immediately after an injury occurs, our bodies reuse the damaged collagen, elastin fibres and other damaged components to produce new ones. Skin needling creates tiny ‘micro-injuries’ in the skin which triggers new collagen without the risk of scarring. The result is smoother, firmer and younger looking skin. The treatments are administered using a sterile, single-use Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller. Using a topical anaesthetic to numb the skin, the roller then punctures the outermost layers of the skin to create the miniscule abrasions. The whole procedure 68

Dr Harvey’s Clinic Part 4

Lip Augmentation One of the more common filler treatments, lip augmentation aims to boost areas where shape and definition have been lost. As we age, lips lose volume, the skin around the lips gets thinner and wrinkles and the corners of the mouth can also droop. Treatments can typically help older individuals with very thin lips to restore a more youthful appearance, or they can create larger, fuller, sexier lips for those wanting an enhanced look. Before any treatment commences, a number of factors are taken into account. These include the age of the patient, facial size and proportions, the ideal lip ratio, the lip borders, the width of the mouth and the side appearance and balance. A natural result is the most important outcome and for a first treatment we often recommend a conservative approach. More product can always be added later. The shape of the lips can be improved by injecting the borders. This gives a more defined lip without necessarily giving a lot of volume. This procedure can also turn up the corners of the mouth. For improving volume, injecting the body of the lips is the key. This will give a more voluptuous and fuller look. Achieving the correct proportions for the lips

to enable balance and harmony with the face is one of the main considerations given and typically the top lip should not overhang the lower lip by more than 1mm. During the procedure, rather than opting for a dental block, we recommend adding a local anaesthetic in order to produce a more comfortable experience for the patient. Side effects are generally minor but may include temporary tenderness, swelling, lumpiness and bruising. These effects are usually uncommon and if experienced are resolved within a few days. Results from the treatment can usually last up to 12 months, in some cases even longer, and most patients can return to work the same day or are able go out in the evening. Vitality through Kinesiology Kinesiology is an alternative health practice that combines western techniques and eastern wisdom to promote physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. Originating in the 1960’s, kinesiology is a holistic practice that identifies the underlying cause or causes of a condition and what is ‘blocking’ the system from accessing the unique potential of the patient. It uses simple, gentle musclemonitoring techniques to firstly, access the subconscious mind and gain accurate information about the patient’s current issues, and secondly, having ascertained what is needed, to help restore balance to the body, mind and spirit. The practitioner connects with the mind and body and is then guided by the results to identify the best solution. Kinesiology brings specific imbalances to conscious awareness and also engages with the mind and body’s natural ability to heal. Our whole being consists of our thoughts, beliefs, emotions, muscles, organs, hormones, immune system, hormonal balance, lifestyle, nutrition and energy, and they are all connected and all considered. It engages and invites the unconscious mind to let go of unhelpful beliefs and patterns and move towards a solution, which leads to quite simple shifts that create powerful change. In so doing, the practitioner engages all of the patient’s resources; conscious and unconscious mind, body and spirit, it’s holistic healing at its best!

Restaurant Review

Gambero Rosso Ristorante

Lovers of authentic Italian cuisine now have a new restaurant to visit this summer. Located south of Mandurah in Falcon, Gambero Rosso (translated as the red prawn) is a new addition to the local eating out scene having recently opened its doors. The Mandurah Life paid a visit. Based on Old Coast Road, a few doors down from the Miami Bakehouse, Gambero Rosso offers a choice of relaxed dining inside a comfortable, contemporary interior or alfresco on the terrace. Arriving for dinner, we chose to sit inside and with 2 kids in tow immediately got to work on ordering some children’s meals while we poured our first glass of wine. Families are well catered for here with a good choice of meals for the youngsters, including 3 different pizzas on the menu. With the kids happy we began to peruse the menu. Again, more good news is the extensive menu choice for adults at Gambero Rosso with an impressive array of starters, pasta and pizza mains, classic Italian dishes and fish mains. Tempted by a number of the starters, in the end, we had to try the Antipasto Misto, the restaurant’s special tasting plate for two. This generously proportioned dish proved to be an inspired choice and a great way of sampling a range of different tastes and Italian flavours. Featuring an arancini ball (fried rice coated with breadcrumbs), Italian sausage with kalamata olives, marinated feta cheese, bruschetta, calamari, grilled eggplant with mozzarella, and Insalata Caprese (tomato and bocconcini), each item tasted wonderfully fresh and was cooked to perfection. Delicious and a must-have! For our mains, we pondered long over whether to try a classic pasta dish, a pizza or a traditional meat dish but in the end plumped for the Risotto Al Funghi (Mushroom Risotto)

and Grilled Fish of the Day, Tropical North West Snapper. Again, we were delighted with our choices. The risotto, generous in size and topped with parmesan, was full of flavour. The test of getting risotto right is the texture of the rice and here it was perfectly cooked, slightly al dente, and full of rich, intense flavours. The Grilled Fish of the Day was also highly enjoyable. Served with roast potatoes and a green balsamic-infused salad, the white meat was tender, light and highly satisfying. As the kids tucked into their Italian ice-cream, we decided to enjoy a couple of coffees, sit back and relax. Offering well-cooked, wellpriced, authentic Italian cuisine, Gambero Rosso is certain to prove to be a popular addition to the Mandurah eating-out scene. Well looked after by owner Olga and Head Waiter Roger, we will certainly be going back again soon! Open Tues to Sun 5.30pm – Late Shop 1, 609 Old Coast Road, Falcon BYO Tel 9534 4222 74

Wine and Barbecues

A tricky combination!

The great Aussie tradition, the barbie! It’s an institution and a combination of fire, food, family, friends and fun. Huge platters of red meat, spicy marinades, fresh fish and, of course, the sizzling sausages! Along with a cold beer, for most people the ideal companion is a glass of quality wine. But beware, all that rich food means selecting the right wine is not always as simple as it seems and with summer here we also find a change in our wine drinking habits. The warmer weather and outdoor living brings the desire for fresh, vibrant whites and rosés, whereas barbeques tend to lend themselves to fruity, full bodied reds. So what’s best to wash down all that delicious home cooked tucker? Well, any wine that competes with barbecued food needs to be full of flavour. For red meats, drink wines full of fruit with enough body to

meet the challenge. Choose a Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache or Zinfandel. The adventurous amongst you could also try a sparkling red, an increasingly popular choice. If it’s chicken or fish you are serving up then white wines should still have the same quality – fruity in flavour. Try a Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay or Semillon. Or, again, and particularly if it’s a special occasion, why not buy in some Champagne or crisp sparkling wine. And remember, don’t forget to chill them!

Summer Recipe Mini Chicken Pies

These mini pies are perfect finger food at parties and picnics. Makes 12

Ingredients Small knob of butter 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 garlic glove, crushed 1 small onion, finely chopped 350g chicken thigh fillet, skinned, finely chopped 50g brown mushrooms, chopped 1 tbsp tarragon leaves, finely chopped 2 tbsp plain flour 120ml chicken stock 60ml white wine pack of thawed shortcrust pastry 50g butter, melted

Method Preheat the oven to 180째C/160째C fan-forced. In a large frying pan, gently melt the butter with the oil. Add the onion and garlic and fry over a low heat until the onion is softened. Add the chicken and cook for a further 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms and the tarragon and continue to cook for 2 to 3 minutes until the mushrooms are soft. Add the flour and cook for 1 minute while stirring. Add the stock and the wine and carry on stirring until the mixture has thickened. Remove the pan from the heat. Grease a 12 capacity muffin tin. Lay a sheet of shortcrust pastry on a flat surface. Using a pastry cutter in the shape of a circle (slightly bigger than the muffin hole) cut out 12 circles, use as many sheets of pastry as required. Gently press the cut pastry circles into the muffin holes. Then use a smaller pastry cutter to cut out 12 smaller circles of pastry - these will form the pie lids. Spoon the chicken mixture into the pastry cases. Place a smaller circle of pastry on top of each filled muffin hole. Use your fingers to gently pinch the circular lids onto the pastry cases. Use the melted butter to brush over each mini pie. Bake for 25 minutes or until the pastry is golden. Cool completely before packing in the picnic.

Chances are you will have already christened the barbecue this summer – but if your normal fare consists of overdone burgers, underdone chicken or tasteless sausages, now is the chance to be more adventurous. With all of us trying to eat healthier these days, fish and vegetables are becoming more and more popular. And remember, there’s nothing that can’t be cooked on a barbie so there’s no need to stick to the same food year in year out. Sardines are not only a tasty option but have a wide range of health benefits, containing substances that are proven to benefit the skin, joints, memory, along with boosting energy levels. Rich in omega 3 fatty acids, high in calcium and vitamin D, they also contain high levels of Coenzyme Q10, a powerful antioxidant that is known to promote a strong immune system. So try this on the barbie – it could be the start of a healthy eating summer! Serves 4

Ingredients

lime juice, lime zest and chilli in a bowl. Lightly cut both sides of each sardine in three or four places. Rub the lime and chilli mixture inside and over each fish. Place the sardines in a shallow dish and scatter the coriander over them. Place the reserved lime slices over the coriander and refrigerate for one hour. Brush oil on both sides of the sardines and place the fish on the grill. Using flat-bladed skewers (you may of course have a wire fish holder) impale the fish with the first skewer just below the head and the second just above the tail. Alternate the sardines head to tail on the parallel blades. Cook for three to four minutes and baste with remaining oil frequently. Serve with wedges cut from the remaining limes. Fabulous! And what’s more, incredibly healthy!

8-12 fresh sardines 1 tbsp salt 4 limes 1 green chilli, de-seeded and finely sliced 100g fresh coriander leaves, roughly chopped 4tbsp olive oil

To cook Clean the sardines by cutting them open along the belly from just below the head to the tail. Scrape out the insides with a knife. Rinse them well under cold running water and pat dry with kitchen paper. Sprinkle the insides with salt. Grate the zest from one lime and squeeze its juice into a small bowl. Cut a second lime into thin slices and set to one side. Combine the 80

Couscous Summer Salad With our beautiful south west climate, it’s a shame to to spend hours inside preparing lunch. This delicious salad is quick to prepare - and no time wasted fussing in a hot kitchen equals more time lazing outside. What’s more, it’s healthy and lends itself to lots of variations; swap the chickpeas for chopped up celery or gloriously green, uncooked peas – they make the dish look amazingly vibrant and fresh too. And try different feta cheeses, such as feta with basil or pesto. Serves 2

Ingredients

To prepare

250ml vegetable stock 200g couscous 1 tsp butter small can chickpeas, drained and rinsed ½ bag washed spinach leaves 1 tbsp chopped fresh mint 2 heaped tbsp black olives, pitted and halved 100g feta

Pour stock into a saucepan and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat and pour in the couscous. Cover and leave to stand for 3 minutes. Add the butter and use a fork or whisk to gently separate the couscous grains and then allow to cool. In a large bowl, combine the spinach, chickpeas, mint, olives and couscous. Crumble in the feta and season with black pepper. Olive oil drizzled over the top is a wonderful indulgence but the dish is scrumptious without it.
