The latest fashion trends from The Mandurah Life’s resident fashion expert...

Spring Fashion Colour-up for the new season!

What better way to begin spring than with a fresh and romantic colour palette! Pastels were everywhere on the runways this year when designers showcased their recent spring/summer creations, especially pale pink. Both sleek work outfits with a masculine cut or pieces within the sports luxe trend for weekend wear can be beautifully softened and feminised with sugary shades of pink, yellow, purple and green as well as washed-out blue denims and pale greys. Layered and loose is the perfect way to wear pastels for a relaxed spring look. Slouchy pants, boxy tops, sweaters and long jackets are ideal for head to toe pastel outfits. Stick to the same shade or mix it up for added texture and depth. Neutral separates, such as loose white pants, a cream or grey top, or a stunning pair of nude pumps or sandals, can also prove effective in breaking up the overall look, if required. Adding a strong item to pastels really brings an edge to an outfit. Bold prints and pastel shades complement each other surprisingly well. Or simply add a narrow black belt to a loose jacket or cardigan and balance it with black heels. Standing out as a clear diversion from the pastel collection of shades is cobalt blue. It is a wonderfully rich and bright colour that looks fabulous with neutrals in the form of a pair of heels or a boxy top. Baring slithers of skin is still a trend that is in for this spring. Many designers have been presenting shifts and gowns that show off shoulders, are strapless or feature skinny spaghetti straps. To add to that, there are plenty of crop top and skirt or pant outfits to choose from. The crop top works well if it is quite fitted, like a thin sweater, or boxy and comes to just above a high waisted skirt, shorts or pair of pants. Cut outs are also set to continue their popularity in dresses and tops. The peplum has, for this season, been played around with and has been transformed into neat bunches of folds for a feminine, sculptural look. There are folds and ruffles on the front of skirts and dresses as well as sweeping frills on tops. It is a defined look that works on form fitting pieces. Enjoy your spring shopping trips!

Living Alfresco!

Use a stiff brush and the discolouration should lift. Remember, diluted bleach in water or a jet wash should only be used after checking with the paving stone manufacturers in case these treatments are too harsh for specific pavers. For decking, spring is the key time to get prepared for the hot summer ahead. Start by giving decked areas a good sanding down by hand to remove any splintered areas, or use a hired sander if the whole area needs attention. Sweep the timber and wash it down with a decking wash solution. Next apply the stain this is the easy part! Use a brush for the edges and an applicator with a long handle for seamlessly covering large areas. Now it’s onto the lawn. Weeding, fertilizing and watering correctly is vital at this time of the year as the wrong balance in the garden can encourage weeds and damage grass. If in doubt, seek specific advice from a local garden centre to ensure healthy grass growth. Once the grass is thick and dense, not only does it create a healthy lush foundation for the outside space but it is also more difficult for ... cont. pg 26

We might not quite be ready to decamp from our warm living rooms to our outside living space but with spring most definitely in the air, now is the perfect time for readying our outside areas for summer. In the south west of WA, we are blessed with the perfect weather for spending long days and evenings outside so some hard work now will definitely pay dividends later. We all have to start somewhere so let’s begin with the maintenance issues. Then we can move onto the more fun part – a revamp of our outdoor settings and furniture! Start off by ensuring the outside of the house and any nooks and crannies are free from cobwebs, and that the windows are sparkling clean. Why not get in a window cleaner if washing down all the glass feels too overwhelming! Hopefully, pavers have been maintained regularly with a stiff bristled brush during winter so that debris and grime have not built up. If, however, stains from algae or other plant debris exist, try using a mild detergent, diluted in water, to remove them. 24

weeds to survive. When mowing, don’t cut the grass too short as this can weaken the turf and allow sunlight to weeds, which will help them to grow. Don’t forget, this is also the time to check all reticulation points are working correctly and not buried under bushes. With the maintenance issues sorted out, it’s time to have a think about bringing some new design and decoration ideas to the outside space. A new colour palette for cushions, throws and candle holders can completely refresh an outdoor space. Try moving furniture around to take in a different view. Consider a theme, such as beach, nautical, French provincial, resort, or Eastern and select items that tie in with the look. A favourite piece of furniture or decorative item is often all that is needed to spark off a design idea. Spend a weekend visiting display homes as these are often full of the very latest ideas to help create the perfect outdoor area.

Outdoor Furniture Tips Before purchasing any new furniture, decide how you are going to use the area. Will it be for alfresco dining and entertaining or just for 26

lounging and relaxing? Is your interior style modern, traditional, contemporary or organic and do you intend to create a flow of that style from inside to out? There’s a choice to be made between the classic elegance of timber, the resilience of wicker or the comfort associated with plush cushions on aluminium. Because of its flexibility, modular furniture can often work well outside as suites can be designed to suit individual needs. Ultimately, it’s about creating an inviting and relaxing environment, taking into account the size of the areas and walkways leading into it. The finishing touches can make your outdoor space completely unique with a whole host of accessories available to complete the look.

Luxury cruisers and yachts, ski boats, fishing boats, kayaks, fishing gear, accessories and live family entertainment are just some of the exciting attractions at this year’s Mandurah Boat Show, WA’s largest boating and leisure event. Once again held at the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club in the Mandurah Ocean Marina, this year promises to be one of the biggest events on record with over 100 exhibitors booked and a range of exciting new boat releases and new products on display. As one of the most recognised faces in fishing, show ambassador Paul Worsteling, host of TV’s iFish, will once again be sharing stories and entertaining the crowds along with celebrity chef Bart Beek and special guest presenter ex-Olympian and fishing author Emma George. The Fishing Stage will also have some of WA’s biggest names in the sport, with Scott Coghlan from Western Angler magazine and Mike Roennfeldt from The West Australian. One of the many new features at the show this year is a range of free boating seminars, including question and answer sessions, plus, for fans of extreme waters sports, don’t miss the water-based Jetsurf demos along with the exciting Jet Xtreme sessions. Amongst the exhibitors at the show, highlights include the 6 boat display from Riviera,

Golf Tips

with Craig Tapp

Hi everyone! Hope you are swinging the club smoothly and holing a few putts as well. As a golfer, I love this time of year. The weather starts to warm up, the fairways and greens start to improve and with the footy season over there is plenty of time for golf. So, I thought this would be great time to share a mini ‘Play Better Golf Plan’ for the new season. Buy a gap wedge. I am amazed how many golfers don’t carry a gap wedge. In most golfers’ bags there will be a couple of woods, a hybrid, a 3 iron through to a 9 iron, a pitching wedge and a sand iron. Typically, there are 4 degrees of loft difference between the irons, i.e. a 5 iron has 4 degrees more loft than a 4 iron. However, there is generally 10 degrees loft difference between a pitching wedge and a sand iron. This equates to about a 2 ½ club gap. We also know that this gap occurs for many important shots inside 100m. Top players know this and throw out some of the longer clubs to include an extra wedge. A standard pitching wedge has 46 degrees of loft and a sand iron 56 degrees so by adding in a 50 or 52 degree gap wedge there’s another option inside that 100m zone. Next, go to the range and hit 10 balls with each of the wedges to get a good understanding of how far the ball will carry with each. You will be amazed at how many times you get the ball close when attacking the green with a short shot. Learn to hit a bump and run shot. This shot can be used in many circumstances from approaching a green to recovering out of trouble. Very few golfers actually execute this shot properly. The key points are to narrow the stance, play the ball back in the stance and lean the shaft towards the target. Maintain the shaft lean through the swing, so swing your arms with no wrist or hand movement. This will ensure downward pressure on the ball 34

resulting in good contact and distance control. Create a go-to shot off the tee. All good players have one available to hit the fairway when under pressure. This may be a big fade with a 3 wood or a stinger type punch shot with an iron. It just needs to get there, in play. Time on the range developing a go-to shot will have a huge impact on your scores. Practise putting under pressure. Just 5 minutes extra before you play can make a huge difference. I like to create different games to at least make it interesting. A good pressure game that gets results is to place a tee 3 feet from the hole then simply hole10 putts in a row before you leave. If you miss, start again as this builds pressure on each putt, just like on the course. It’s a simple but effective way of improving scores. Watch golf on TV. Everyone can do this one! Watching good players is great for learning timing, rhythm and, balance. Many great golfers have commented how they learned to play by copying a particular player. So, pick your favourite player that has your body shape or personality and watch them on TV. Choose one or two of these ideas and it will instantly make your golfing experience all that much better. Put all five into action and, who knows, maybe will be watching you on TV! Good luck and good golfing!!!

Mercedes-Benz C-Class High volume sedan now bigger and better!

Any new car launch from Mercedes-Benz is going to be a significant event but when it’s the German luxury car maker’s core product in the Australian market, expect quite a fanfare.

Let’s put this into perspective. The outgoing C-Class is not only the nation’s biggest selling prestige sedan, it actually even outsells many of its cheaper rivals from Ford, Subaru and

40

motoring

Honda, amongst others. Currently, it accounts for almost one quarter of all Mercedes-Benz sales down-under, having ruled the roost in the mid-size luxury sedan market ever since its launch over 7 years ago. Pretty impressive stats! So with quite an act to follow, what can we expect from the all new C-Class? Well, to start with, it is considerably bigger. With the wheelbase extended by 80mm, not only is there a great deal more internal space for passengers, externally the car is now almost as big as the E-Class from 2 generations ago. This extra length has created a look and feel that oozes elegance and style, and its sweeping lines and sculptured side panels offer more than just a nod and a wink to the top of the range S-Class – a car, incidentally, that was designed in the same Mercedes-Benz studio. Along with sharing some of its looks with the flagship S-Class, the new C-Class also features much of its technology. All models now include LED headlights, electric front seats, satnav, parallel and reverse parking assistance and blind spot assist. Premium models add extra software, 19-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, active lane assist and full leather. With nine airbags as standard and an array of cameras, including rear view and overhead view, the car also has a lane departure warning system and the very latest early crash avoidance technology, including a fatigue-detection system to monitor steering behaviour. Perhaps the most significant development on the new C-class is its new aluminium body and lightweight suspension system. With the roof, doors, bonnet, boot and fenders all made from aluminium, a weight reduction of around 100kg has been achieved. This has led to both improved performance and fuel economy with the entry level C200 now consuming an impressive 6.0L of fuel per 100km. With all models now fitted with 4-cyclinder engines, the turbo-powered 2.0 litre C200 kicks off the range, delivering135kW of power and 300Nm of torque. Next up and priced at just over $60K plus on road costs is the C200 BlueTec diesel with the sportier C250 at around $70K plus on road costs. The current range-topping model, the C300 BlueTec diesel-electric hybrid, is another first for the range with its 20kW/260Nm electric motor allowing the car to move from 0-25km/h smoothly and silently. With prices almost identical to the outgoing model, improved performance, better fuel economy and upgraded features, notwithstanding its stunning new visual appeal, expect the all new C-Class to continue its dominance of this market sector for some time yet. For further information on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class or to arrange a test drive, contact Southpoint Star on (08) 9586 5388.

BMW X4

Big selling X-Series line-up expanded

It was just over fifteen years ago that BMW introduced the world to the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) with the launch of the X5. Three years later saw the launch of the smaller X3 and in 2009, both the entry level X1 and new Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) model, the X6, were added to the burgeoning X family range. With worldwide car buyers’ seemingly insatiable appetite for luxury crossover vehicles, this year, the X range has again been beefed up with the launch of the X4. Size-wise, it slots into the line-up between its trendsetting X3 and X5 siblings, however, the X4, has much more in common with the X6 with its combination of SUV capabilities and coupé-style design. Indeed, BMW describes the X4 as the world’s first premium mid-sized SAC. So, why does BMW need the X4? Well, there’s no “the X4 boasts an doubt the extraordinary impressive visual success of the X6 is a presence on the road” compelling reason. For a vehicle that was initially seen as a niche spin-off from the X5, the X6 has now sold in excess of 250,000 units worldwide, spawning in its wake a host of mid-sized imitators, including, amongst others, the Range Rover Evoque and Porsche Macan; cars that the X4 will directly compete with head-on. Displaying sporting characteristics very much of its own, in the flesh the X4 boasts an impressive visual presence on the road. Viewed front-on, its large air intakes and signature BMW twin headlights and fog lamps will certainly get the car plenty of admiring glances from rear-view mirrors. Side-on, it scores highly as well with its swooping curved roofline and enlarged rear wheel arches. Yes, the roofline does slope away but the car still provides generous levels of space for up to 5 adults. Aside from the obvious visual differences, it’s the seating position in the X4 that is its most distinguishable feature from the similar sized X3. Even with a noticeably higher ride height than an average performance car, at 20mm lower than the X3 in the front seats and 28mm in the back, the car feels markedly closer to the tarmac. Much like the X6, it’s an exciting combination of family practicality and the sporting elegance of a classical coupé. 42

motoring On the road, performance levels more than match expectations. With a choice of 3 petrol engines and 3 diesel units, ranging in output from 135kW/184hp to 230kW/313hp, the flagship petrol option of BMW X4 xDrive35i delivers an agreeable peak torque of 400Nm whilst sprinting from 0-100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds. Meanwhile, the top of the range diesel option with its 6-cyclinder 3.0L in-line engine offers even more torque at 630Nm, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in a blistering 5.2 seconds while still maintaining a combined cycle fuel consumption of just 6 litres per 100kms. Stylish, engaging and with class-leading fuel consumption and emission figures, the X4 fills an important gap in BMW’s award-winning range. Expect to see plenty of them on the roads. Extended Warranties Are they worth the paper they are written on?

For most people, apart from buying a house, purchasing a car is one of the biggest financial decisions they are ever likely to make. It’s understandable, therefore, that buyers would see the benefit in protecting themselves against unforseen repairs and bills through purchasing additional cover. Typically a warranty that kicks in after the manufacturer’s warranty has expired, extended warranties are big business for car dealerships. They are also likely to be one of a number of products (along with paint protection plans and anti-theft devices) that the dealership will push at the time of purchase. So, if you are thinking of taking the plunge and purchasing one of these products, it’s worth asking yourself a few important questions before you do. How long do you intend keeping the car? If you plan to keep your brand new car no more than 3 to 4 years, chances are the car will still be under the manufacturer’s warranty when you come to sell it. In this case, it is not usual to fork out for extra cover. Who is the warranty with? Manufacturer-backed warranties are much more likely to be reliable policies. Most of these can be used at dealerships across the country whereas so-called third-party warranties (non-manufacturer-backed warranties) may only be useable at the actual dealership that sold it. Have you read the fine print? An extended warranty is not always the cure-all solution promised. Extended thirdparty warranties can often be backed by companies with somewhat questionable reputations who will try and squirm out of

paying for anything. Often, the fine print of the warranty will reveal that only a very basic level of cover exists and parts may not even be replaced with like for like new parts. Have you shopped around for the best price? The chances are that the dealer selling the car will not be obtaining the best possible price or policy for your needs. Avoid signing up on the spot and check with other dealers who might be more willing to negotiate or at least offer a choice of products. Check your own repair history and the history of the model purchased Think about typical problems you have encountered in the past and how much they cost to fix. Have you had cars in the past that have encountered problems that are covered by the warranty? Plus, is the model of car you are buying prone to having specific mechanical issues? If the answer is no to both of the above, you may be wasting your money. Cars today are more reliable and less likely to break down. Ask yourself the last time you drove a car that had a major mechanical issue. Peace of mind is appealing to all but why pay for something you don’t really need? Instead, why not put away half the cost of the warranty into a savings account and draw on that if required. Remember, extended warranties are not big business with car dealerships for nothing! Do you own research but the money is probably much better off in your pocket! 44

Talking Property

with Roz Armstrong

Our unbeatable summer lifestyle! Mandurah certainly turns it on for summer and our weather, beaches and waterways make for the perfect place to put down roots and watch the family grow. Whether you are looking to buy something close to the water or in the picturesque rolling hills that overlook our beautiful coastline, the Peel Region rivals any coastal town in the world for its beauty and diversity. With our beaches beautifully clean and rarely crowded, swimming is a relaxed experience and for the early risers you can often have the whole beach to yourself. Having recently come back from a long overseas holiday, I can assure you this is a very rare and precious thing when compared to many of the world’s beaches. Prices in these peaceful beach suburbs range according to location and the style of property. In some of the more established suburbs, such as Madora Bay to the north or Falcon and Melrose to the south, older style properties on quarter acre blocks are still available for under $350,000. Or choose a spectacular new home with unbeatable ocean views, pool and lush manicured gardens for anything up to $1.5m or more depending on location. Currently, for the savvy buyer, there are also still some very grand and spacious older style homes ripe for renovation, enjoying beautiful views over the ocean. Absolute beachfront with just a walkway between the property and the beach is offered in only a few select locations with the closest to town being the beachfront developments of Silver Sands, Watersun and San Remo. These homes enjoy an excellent location as they are close to the CBD, private schools and all other

amenities whilst offering fabulous uninterrupted ocean views and spectacular Indian Ocean sunsets. Simply walk out of your back gate directly onto the beach. Another area for such luxury is the small suburb of Seascapes in Halls Head, and many other locations still offer oceanfront drives where homes enjoy stunning ocean views even though not positioned right on the beach. Then, of course, there is the wide choice of homes built with estuary views in mind. Many of these are beautifully secluded suburbs right along the strip south of town. Some are tucked away on blocks that range in size from 1 to 10 acres, offering affordability from around $650,000, depending on the location. For those desiring both privacy, views and access to schools, shops and amenities, there is a great range of lifestyle options. A short commute to Perth by train or by car and less than an hour from the international airport, Mandurah is an attractive option for both city and fly-in, fly-out workers. Add in the great boating, fishing, golfing and surfing opportunities and you can see why more and more people are moving to Mandurah to enjoy the area’s unbeatable lifestyle. Making The Right Financial Decisions Avoid these mistakes! By Murray Blakers

Over the last 29 years, I have seen many mistakes made by clients with taxation, work and investments. The measure of a mistake is obviously its cost although the cost of a mistake is not always obvious. Below is a list that, I believe, contains the worst mistakes to be made. And, perhaps surprisingly, they have little to do with filling out a tax form. Firstly, and possibly the most fundamental mistake, is making decisions based on tax. Financial decisions need to be made based on the best outcome. By making decisions based on the tax outcome, you are likely choosing to lose money. Advertised tax schemes are typically based on loss making projects. Many are targeted to higher income clients, especially FIFO taxpayers. There is nothing clever about these because losing money is easy. Why would you pay money to get someone to help you lose money? Sometimes, I see clients disappointed that their refund is smaller than their tax deduction. The expectations are that the tax system will completely cover the loss. If you spend money on a business, property or tax deduction, the tax system will never refund all of the costs back. The amount spent on tax deductions does not equal the tax refund. The tax refund of any deductible payment or loss can be anything from zero to just under half of what was spent so you will always be out of pocket. The most frustrating tax benefit I see lost is also a common one. I see many clients who have owned their own home and diligently paid down the mortgage. As the years pass and the family grows, a new, more expensive home is purchased and the old one kept as an investment. Typically, this results in a large non-deductible private debt, however, with better planning, the interest could have been claimed against income. By using mortgage offsets rather than paying down debt, the interest can still be deducted when the funds

are redrawn. Mortgage offsets offer far more tax planning options. Don’t be a share trader. Periodically, I have clients who take up share trading to supplement or even replace their income. Income from trading is taxable at normal rates and trading losses can be deducted from other income in most cases. Share trading should be distinguished from share investing with the basic difference being volume and frequency. In short, if you take up share trading, you can lose money and you may not get a tax deduction for it. I have many clients who have made money by investing in good quality shares and enjoy tax paid dividends. I do not have one client who has made money trading shares and many have losses carried forward that may never be claimed for tax. Don’t seek tax advice too late. After the investment choice is made, after the money is gone, after the bank has made a demand, or after the contract has been signed it may be too late to ask about the best tax outcome. Once the deal is signed it may not be possible to make changes to take advantage of any tax benefits. Most tax structures need to be set up in advance to be effective. Lastly, but by no means least, always ask the right questions of your advisor. How many years’ experience? What are your qualifications? Can you provide a referral? Don’t only ask, how much does it cost to get my tax done? The biggest cost of any professional service might come from poor advice, not from the price. The benefit of getting your structure or finances correct will far outweigh the price of the service. Murray Blakers is the principal of BMC Accounting, Mandurah. business what you are offering and the dynamics of the market as well as the business’s key differentiators, such as service levels and competitive advantage. 2. Revise prices regularly to reflect market changes. Businesses that are inflexible to changing industry conditions and market forces feel the impact first. Identify the key indicators that influence your profit margin, including direct costs, such as fuel, wages, maintenance and subcontractors. Regularly monitor these to ensure that the prices charged maintain profit margins. When costs change, communicate these openly and build support for price increases. The more customers understand these cost pressures, the less shocked they will be by price changes, particularly when current service quality levels are expected to be maintained. 3. Keep other marketing elements current and up to date. Your reputation, image and branding should send a strong signal that reinforces your price. If the company image reflects high quality, customers will expect to pay more. 4. Vary prices for different market segments. Some segments will place a higher value on your service than others. Their perception of value will be determined by the need for convenience, what the service actually means to them and how important it is to meeting their needs. Where the perception of value is high, look at charging higher prices. Also be aware of “over servicing”, particularly where customers are not prepared to pay for additional things that they don’t want.

Pricing Strategies For Business

How to combat rising costs

Many businesses are currently struggling with rising costs, particularly with fuel and electricity. These challenges are making it harder for businesses to compete. Having an effective pricing strategy can be the difference between stable profits and a business in decline. Cost increases can only be recovered if a pricing strategy is flexible, regularly reviewed and can be adjusted quickly. Reviewing prices regularly reduces the need to make excessive price increases, which can damage customer relationships. It’s all about communication and managing expectations. A pricing review doesn’t just mean increasing prices. Additional costs can sometimes be absorbed by bundling the offering differently or introducing new charges for certain transactions. No matter what pricing strategy a business adopts, remaining transparent and communicating with customers about the need for price changes is critical. Here are four pricing strategies to help improve profitability:1. Know your costs but associate prices with added value. A “cost plus margin” pricing model gives less room to adjust prices in a competitive market. However, a stronger perception of value in a customer’s mind gives greater potential for increasing prices. Understand the value of

KATRINA BARBER

objects and fluorescent lighting to complete bold works on paper or canvas, and more recently sculpture and installation. Watercolour is Katrina’s chosen medium to develop and investigate her ideas. She builds up large surface areas with abstract shapes, lines and multiple layers of translucent colour, creating rich luminous planes of light within her work. In 2013 Katrina was selected to be a part of the HERE&NOW13 project and exhibition produced by DADAA and the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery. The project enabled Katrina to take on artist residencies at Perth Central Institute of Technology and Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA), where she produced large paintings on the studio walls, works with light which related to her paintings, and various experiments with installations using streamers, balloons, large fans, wire and light. ‘Barbers works are informed by past isolation and an innate need to communicate with both her immediate and outside world. Her paintings, drawings and watercolours are self-reflective transient feelings, which at times are confronting and contradictory to the artist’s outer persona. Katrina will continue to explore these themes during her residency at CASM. Katrina has been exhibiting actively since 2007 and has works held in the collections of Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, Nulsen Inc and Disability Services Commission Rockingham, as well as many private collections. Her most recent works are showcased at http://katrinabarber.wix. com/katrinabarber and older works on www.katrinabarber.com

Katrina Barber

Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah is excited to welcome Warnbro based artist Katrina Barber to its Artist Residency Program. Katrina began her three month residency in August with an intention to complete a series of works for her up and coming exhibition at Melbourne’s Alcaston Gallery in October 2014. Katrina is deaf and lives a life of complete silence communicating with limited key words, verbal sounds and the use of a digital tablet. She began painting eight years ago and uses art as a conduit to explore the various themes and concepts that interest her and in turn to communicate these ideas to others. Working closely with long term art mentor Julianne Ryan who interprets and advocates on her behalf as well as assisting in the studio, Katrina is able to work towards fulfilling her passion for sustainable artist practice. ‘For Katrina, art has become her voice, and that voice is inspiring and beautiful.’ Katrina’s professional practice consists of the manipulation of water based media, wire, found

Introducing ...

Clusters of tiny dilated blood vessels that are visible through the skin, broken capillaries are the most common type of skin blemish. More prevalent as we grow older due to our skin losing its elasticity, broken capillaries are also formed by excessive sun exposure, through drinking alcohol, by eating hot and spicy foods and smoking. VascuLyse is the very latest non-invasive technology designed to treat skin blemishes. In addition to permanently removing broken capillaries, it also treats ruby points on the body, skin tags on the face, neck and body, blotches on the face and upper chest, milia on the face and cholesterol deposits around the eyes. Through the use of a disposable, sterile stylus that gently touches the skin, the VascuLyse introduces a mild current to induce coagulation within the damaged capillary. The treatment, referred to as Capillary Coalysis, leads to the unsightly capillaries being absorbed and permanently eliminated by the body. Relatively painless, some patients have been known to experience a slight pricking sensation, sessions are between five and fifteen minutes in length and most conditions are effectively treated in between one and three sessions. Skin reaction after treatments is minimal and any reaction completely disappears after a few days, leaving truly amazing results. VascuLyse is now available in Mandurah at Total Skin and Body Centre Day Spa. For further information, call 9535 4530 or visit them at Unit 2/2A, Peel Street (next to the Atrium Hotel).

Beauty Tips

Fresh faced for spring!

There is colour, radiance and plenty of room for selfexpression with this season’s new makeup trends. It’s the perfect time to rethink our own makeup and have a go at creating a new look. Let’s start with the eyes. The standout colour for spring is set to be blue and a rich cobalt or sky blue will create plenty of spring appeal. Apply it in a solid line just above the upper eyelashes and the result is a striking strong look. Make sure the rest of the face is kept neutral so that the eyes have the centre stage. For a more subtle, fresh look, try using iridescent white or very pale pink for eyelids in a cream powder. Be careful not to apply too much or the effect will be quite stark and cold rather than dewy and radiant. Add liner in white to just the inner corners of the eyes to open them up even more. Moving on to the lips, orange is set to be the colour of the season and, amazingly, a bright shade works well for all skin tones. However, if you have fair skin and prefer a more muted daytime look, then opt for a pastel shade and save the bright lipstick for after dark. For skin, the light natural look is always a winner in spring and summer. The trick is how best to achieve this without looking like products have been piled on. Start off by priming your skin so that its tone is more even and the foundation has a better base to work on. When it comes to applying the foundation,

don’t use too much or your face will lose that fresh spring look. If you feel you need more coverage, simply use a concealer to cover up any blemishes. A little blush in a peach cream, or a bronzer, can be added for a healthy glow on the apples of the cheeks and up towards the temples. To make a ‘natural’ face really radiant, use an illuminator - sparingly - on cheekbones, down the bridge of the nose and just under eyebrows - wherever light would naturally hit the face. Finish off with a light coverage of a tinted lip balm or a nude lipstick. Find your perfect match by very lightly biting down on your lower lip to see which tone of ‘nude’ you should be going for. 64

The community program also offers a highly successful person-centred approach to getting involved in community-based activities. Other Parasites

Preventative medicines given to pets to prevent heartworm can also control a range of other common parasites of which some can also be contracted by humans. Parasitic infections that can be transmitted from animals to humans are known as parasitic zoonosis.

Protecting Pets From Parasites By Sarah Cooper

Heartworms

Hookworms These are contracted through the ingestion or skin penetration of hookworm larvae found in the stools or soil contaminated by faeces of an infected animal. The larvae then develop and migrate to the intestines where they hook onto the intestinal wall and feast on the host’s blood. Also able to infect humans, unlike with animals, they move around under the skin causing an inflammatory reaction. Keep your pet free of hookworms with good hygiene, preventive medication and regular veterinary check-ups. Also, keep stray dogs and cats out of sandpits and gardening areas.

A parasitic disease found in many parts of Australia, heartworms are spread by mosquitoes and, therefore, have a higher incidence in areas heavily populated by them. Dogs are typically the most common host for heartworms but over 30 animal species can be infected, including domestic cats and foxes. Even humans, albeit rarely, can be infected. These parasites live in the blood of a dog’s heart and adjacent blood vessels. They can grow up to 30cm in length, reach maturation by 6 to 7 months after infection, live approximately for 5 to 7 years and produce offspring, known as microfilariae, which circulate in the animal’s blood. The most serious common parasite in dogs, it restricts blood flow, damages internal organs and can lead to the dog experiencing a weakened, enlarged heart. Left untreated, the disease can be fatal. The good news is that most dogs can be successfully treated, usually with a drug that kills off the adult and its offspring, but prevention is by far the best solution. Preventative medicines include injectable, monthly topicals and monthly chewable or flavoured tablets. These preventative medications are extremely effective, and when administered correctly on a regular basis, can completely prevent the pet from contracting heartworm. If you are concerned about your dog, symptoms to watch out for include breathing difficulties, coughing, fatigue, listlessness, weight loss and a rough coat. Blood screening tests can verify the presence of heartworms whilst ultrasound and x-rays are used to detect

Roundworms Round in shape, these live in the dog’s intestines and consume partially digested food. Unlike hookworms they don’t attach to the intestinal wall but literally swim in their food. Transmission to dogs is either through eggs in faeces which contaminate soil that may be ingested, through eating a host prey animal, through their mother’s milk or in utero. In dogs, roundworms cause diarrhoea, vomiting and, in extreme cases, pneumonia and intestinal obstruction. In humans, roundworms can cause a serious condition known as visceral larva migrans. It can also generate an inflammatory reaction that in some cases causes blindness. Proper hand washing can prevent infection whilst both deworming of puppies and preventive medication reduces the spread. Tapeworms Various species of tapeworms infect dogs, occurring in different ways from transmission ... cont. pg 72 71

animal health through fleas or by ingesting infected raw meat or offal. Symptoms vary from malaise to colic and mild diarrhoea, depending on the degree of infection and the age and condition of the affected dog. Transmission to humans of certain species can have serious repercussions. Preventive medication, regular worming and effective flea control, as well as avoiding feeding your dog raw meat or offal, will significantly reduce the chance of canine and human infections. Whipworms Contracted by ingesting the eggs, whipworm eggs can survive extreme exterior conditions for months and even years. Within 1 to 3 months after the eggs are swallowed, they hatch in the dog’s intestine, attach to the wall and begin to suck blood and lay eggs. In dogs, whipworm can cause diarrhoea, weight loss and sometimes anaemia. Whipworm infection in humans is extremely rare. Remember, children are more prone to contracting zoonotic parasites as they tend to kiss and play more readily with pets. To help avoid infections, always pick up faeces promptly and avoid eating while playing with pets. Frequent hand washing as well as good general hygiene for people and dogs is highly recommended. Golden Tandoori

There’s been a welcome increase in the choice of Indian restaurants in Mandurah over recent years and Ocean Marinabased Golden Tandoori is the latest local eatery catering for lovers of Indian cuisine. Positioned on the Palladio boardwalk with spectacular views over the water, The Mandurah Life decided to pay a visit to see if the food lived up to the picturesque surroundings. Arriving for lunch on a sunny winter’s day, we were quickly shown to our table and immediately began studying the menu. Serving up a range of authentic North Indian dishes, Golden Tandoori’s extensive menu includes a selection of both well-known Indian favourites and some more adventurous creations. For example, its Traditional Goat Curry, young goat on the bone served with an onion and tomato curry sauce, has certainly been proving extremely popular amongst diners. There’s also a great choice of vegetarian mains, exotic breads and drinks, including an Iced Lassi, which is perfect for summer dining, Ice Rose Milk, a street-food favourite in India, and Masala Chai, which is hot tea brewed with fresh milk and fragrant spices. For lunchtime dining, in addition to being able to order off the main menu, patrons can also enjoy a Thali special together with a range of tasty starters. We began with the half Tandoori Chicken, a deliciously tender chunk of flavoursome chicken prepared in the restaurant’s tandoor oven. What a fabulous treat this was, and a great choice! Other starters on the lunchtime menu include Homemade Vegetable Samosas, Onion Bhaji, Paneer Pakora and Chicken Tikka. For our main dish we chose the Thali. A staple dish throughout India, this delicious dish typically combines a selection of curries, rice and breads together with a small dessert.

Served in small bowls on top of a metal tray and offered as either a vegetarian or meat dish, a Thali has always been a great way of experiencing a range of different flavours in one sitting. What a great way of sampling some of Golden Tandoori’s tempting delights. We decided to choose the Non-Vegetarian Thali, offered with a choice of 3 meat curries, naan bread, rice, pappadums and dessert, priced at $19.50 (Vegetarian Thali was priced at $18). Our curry choices included a wonderfully spicy Beef Madras, a succulent Chicken Jhal Frazi, stir-fried with green chillies and bell peppers, and a magnificent Lamb Rogan Josh, simmered in a mouth-watering onion, herb and tomato gravy. Beautifully cooked and highly enjoyable, the Thali proved to be an inspired lunchtime choice and it’s a dish that comes highly recommended. With its attentive service, great views and superb food, Golden Tandoori offers plenty of reasons for curry aficionados to give it a try this summer. Restaurant Review

With a wide selection of classic Thai creations on offer from chicken and seafood dishes to beef, lamb and duck, making your final choice is never easy at Jasmine Thai. In the end, we decided to order one of Thailand’s most popular dishes. So popular, in fact, it is now listed as one of the country’s national dishes – Pad Thai. This simple yet delicious dish, containing stir-fried noodles, peanuts, bean sprouts and egg, is available on the menu served with either chicken or prawns. We decided to order the lunchtime special version with prawns, available with a glass of house wine for just $15 ($24 on the main menu). Again, full of flavour, this dish, as always, was an absolute winner and cooked to perfection. Three years on, highly skilled Thai chef Jiradej Deesri and his apprentice James Chukaeo are still together in the kitchen and it’s this consistency of approach that is one of the key reasons why Jasmine Thai continues to produce its delicious Thai cuisine to such a high standard. The restaurant, under the guidance of Geoff and Som, also works painstakingly hard at sourcing the freshest local ingredients as possible and continues to cater for all dietary requirements with many dishes on the menu available gluten-free. With its fabulous food, friendly service and picturesque marina views, Jasmine Thai continues to thrive. Diners can now also enjoy a selection of WA wines from Margaret River, Orange Grove and our very own Peel Region as well as a bottle of refreshing Thai-brewed Singha beer. Make sure you pay them a visit this spring.

Jasmine Thai

It’s almost 3 years since Jasmine Thai opened its doors in Mandurah Ocean Marina and high time we paid the restaurant another visit. Now fully licensed and open for breakfast 7 days a week, there have also been a few welcome additions to the menu since our last review. Arriving for lunch, to start with we decided to give one of the newer dishes on the menu a try. So, to kick off proceedings we ordered up a half dozen of Thai Style oysters. Also available Natural with lemon, the Thai Style version of the dish is available as a dozen at $27 or half a dozen at $17 and served with the restaurant’s special homemade chilli sauce. As with all plates at Jasmine Thai, dishes are served mild, medium, hot, or, for the brave (!), Thai hot, and our choice was to sample it hot. Beautifully presented with a colourful, crisp salad, the oysters were full of flavour and served up with no shortage of heat! The homemade chilli sauce is definitely worth the visit alone!

My Favourite Dish By Jarrad Carter The Oyster Bar Mandurah

Oysters Errol Flynn One of the most popular choices on our menu, Oysters Errol Flynn, is, of course, named after one of Australia’s most famous actors. Born in Tasmania in 1909, Errol Flynn became famous for his swashbuckling roles in various Hollywood films and his playboy lifestyle. I can only assume, as the dish was already on the menu when my father bought the original Oyster Bar in Glenelg, Adelaide, that as well as having an insatiable love of women, he also enjoyed plenty of oysters! The dish itself is a delicious combination of a dozen oysters containing either three lots of four different varieties or four lots of three different varieties. It’s the perfect dish for sampling a number of different flavours rather than a full dozen of just one variety. Options for the dish include the connoisseur’s choice, Oysters Natural, as well as a number of other chilled options, including Oysters Thai, Oysters Oliver with shallots and red wine vinegar, Oysters Caviar, and Oysters Atlantic with smoked salmon. The grilled options include Oysters Kilpatrick, Oysters Chilli and Cheese, Oysters Pesto and Oysters Darleyfella.

Plus, the dish can also include our Oyster of the Month, so whatever your preference, it’s possible to have a combination of several different varieties. In addition to the Errol Flynn dozen, we also offer an Oyster Taster, which is a mixed half dozen of oysters. With this option, customers can try two lots of three different varieties or three lots of two different varieties. This dish works well for diners with smaller appetites or for those wanting to try oysters for the first time. Perhaps best of all, both dishes give us the chance to liaise closely with our customers, ensuring they enjoy a combination of their personal favourites each time they visit. And remember, there’s plenty more on the menu as well as our fabulous oysters! Open 7 days from 11am, visit Oyster Bar Mandurah at Shop 5, The Palladio on the Boardwalk, Mandurah Ocean Marina.

Understanding ‘Organic’ What is organic? The basic principle of organic farming is to achieve optimum quantities of produce and food of high nutritional quality without the use of artificial fertilisers, synthetic (manmade) chemicals and GMO’s (genetically modified organisms). Organic meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products come from free-range, grass-fed animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic farming emphasises the need to maintain appropriate land management and aims to ecologically achieve a balance between animal life, the natural environment and food crops. Organic farmers do not use pesticides or herbicides. The produce that is produced through organic farming is thus at its most natural form.

certification logo. Anything with less than 70% cannot claim to be organic in any way.

Why is ‘organic’ more expensive? One might think that organic food would cost less than conventional food since the production is spared the cost of the fertilizers, chemicals etc. So why is it generally dearer? Substituting fast and dangerous weed killing chemicals for hand weeding adds extra labour costs. There are also annual costs associated with keeping the certification and the rotating of crops, in order to maintain natural, nutrientrich farm land, slows production. Plus, huge costs are associated with the giving up of feed lots in favour of free-range, grass-fed animal farming and ultimately all these costs are passed onto the consumer. Demand also outweighs supply for organic produce. The harsh reality about organics is traditional farming habits are not required to prove the use of all sorts of proven dangerous chemicals and GMO’s on produce, yet organic farmers have to pay a small fortune to prove they are not. To purchase certified organic produce locally, call into Dynamic Organic, corner Gibson and George Street, Mandurah, and talk to owners Tamara Deans and Keith Donaldson or any of the friendly staff. Also enquire about the diverse range of workshops held weekly.

What is the difference between a product labelled ‘Organic’ and one labelled ‘Certified Organic’? When consumers choose a product that carries a certified organic logo they are protected by consumer laws. The certifying body routinely and randomly audits and tests businesses and products that uses its logo; an Australian Government-approved certification mark. Products wearing any certified organic logo must follow strict guidelines in order to achieve and maintain their certification status. To qualify for certification there is a 3 year period and the applicant must prove its farming methods are 100% organic. Applicants are continually tested during this time and the process continues even after they have been approved. This, unfortunately, comes at a heavy price to the farmer. Labelling with just the word ‘organic’ must contain up to 70% organic ingredients but cannot carry a 78
