Summer Fashion

Stephanie Says…

The latest fashion trends from The Mandurah Life’s resident fashion expert...

It’s bold, it’s bright, it’s botanical! Summer in WA is all about glorious sunshine, warm breezes and blue skies; the perfect backdrop for showing off the latest trends hitting our stores. It’s going to be a bold and bright season with a great choice of feminine, elegant and relaxed silhouettes. Channelling a retro resort look, botanical is going to be the standout print for summer. Look out for large scale photographic inspired prints of ferns, leaves, tropical palm trees, pineapples, exotic flowers and birds in beautifully rich green, red, orange or classic monochrome. This print is very feminine and lets us girls easily slip into a summer holiday mood. The best way to wear a botanical print is to keep the cut simple and to pair it with subtle jewellery and nude shoes or sandals. Matching separates works well but you can break up the look by picking an individual piece, such as a midi skirt, shift dress, boxy top, wide leg pant or cute shorts, and wearing it with something neutral or bright white. Key pieces to have in the wardrobe this summer start with culottes. Either in shorts or mid-length, culottes are the ideal way to wear pants for the months ahead. Add strappy heels and a beautiful, elegant look is created. The mid-length is also the way to wear a skirt this summer in a streamlined pencil, A-line or fluted style. The waist is accentuated and the hem should lie just below the knee, creating a sophisticated and very feminine look. To complete an outfit with either a mid-length skirt or culottes, add a cropped boxy top or tuck in a crisp white shirt. Monochrome textural mesh is set to feature prominently on mid-length culottes and skirts as well as on tops too. It breaks up the block of

black or white and brings a lighter, fresher look for summer. The dress to invest in this summer is a shift dress. It’s an incredibly easy item to wear and looks great in this season’s vibrant botanical print as well as in a delicious sorbet colour. For a more body-con option for dresses, the sheath is also going to be very popular. For a relaxed nonchalant summer look, look out for tops and sheath dresses that expose shoulders. Slouchy necklines, off the shoulder or cut outs give a peek of flesh without showing too much. It’s a nod back to the 1960’s and looks fabulous and chic with a Bridget Bardot-esque ponytail with height at the crown.

more unusual centrepiece, find an ornate birdcage that can house a chunky pillar candle. Jam jars are a more low-key way to decorate a table but are still very effective. Regularly space out the jars along the table and place inside either a single tea light or some short-stemmed flowers. To make it more personal, wrap twine or coloured ribbon around each jar. Make use of our coastal location – you never know what you might find down at the beach! Cleaned-up driftwood and shells make striking arrangements. Add candles for more effect and try to place them along the driftwood if it is level enough. For a colourful table decoration, use several Indian-coloured tea glasses each with its own little birthday cake candle inside. It’s a cost-effective way to add vibrancy and sparkle to the evening. Edible centrepieces are a lot of fun and great for an evening of casual drinks and tapas. Place frozen or fresh fruit, such as mangoes, raspberries or strawberries, into ice cube trays and top up with water. Once frozen, tip out

The Finishing Touches In the previous issue of The Mandurah Life, we discussed ways of preparing our outside living space for the summer. In this edition, we focus on some important finishing touches to our alfresco dining area. Whether you’re planning on having friends over for dinner or just want to quietly relax with a light supper, there are plenty of ideas to help create the perfect table decoration, and they don’t need to break the bank. To start with, always ensure that decorations are low enough to allow everyone to see each other across the table and try to stick to simple, clean ideas to avoid cluttering up the table. For an elegant centrepiece, think about using a beautiful cake stand in white porcelain or clear glass in order to display a cluster of tea lights or candles of varying heights. Various antique candlesticks, either grouped together for a circular table or lined along the centre of a rectangular table, also work well. Stick to one colour of candle, such as ivory or black. Golf Tips

with Craig Tapp

Hi everyone! Hope you are all playing well. Winter golf is always difficult and over the last 3 to 6 months we have had lightning fast, very firm greens, making the task of holding approach shots and putting a real challenge. The fairways have, as usual, been playing slow making the courses play long and, due to lack of grass growth, many of us will have experienced tight and difficult lies for our chipping and pitching. So, if you have maintained your handicap or even lost any shots, well done! I love this time of year as a golfer. To protect the greens from drying out, the green keepers usually leave the blade length a little longer therefore slowing the greens down a touch. This reduces the amount of 3 putting and also reduces the amount of break in the putts making for easier scoring. The fairways dry out giving a strong first bounce and extra run off from tee shots allowing for a shorter approach shot and more scoring opportunities. Around the greens with the hot weather and watering systems in place, we get a lush surface that makes chipping and pitching much easier. So, if you are a regular golfer or just about to get back into it again, now is the perfect time to reduce your handicap. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of the easier conditions. Learn to hit your driver with a slight draw to maximise the running fairways The easiest way to do this is to move the ball slightly further back in the stance as if you are going to swing a little inside out. Always remember the swing path creates the spin and the club face dictates the starting point. In fact, the club face has 5 times more influence on the starting point than the swing path. So

playing the ball slightly further back in the stance encourages the club path more from the inside, creating a hook or draw spin. Learn to use your sand iron to pitch the ball Most club golfers chip with a pitching wedge or lob wedge. Neither of these wedges has much bounce on the club so, if not struck perfectly, will either dig into the ground causing a flub or will slide straight under the ball creating a lot of undue stress. The sand iron has a lot of bounce so you can lean the shaft forward and simply swing your arms and use the loft and the bounce of the club to make pitching the ball easier and more reliable. For those with a lob wedge, lob it straight into the bin! Practise a faster holing speed on short putts After the fast greens of the winter months, most club golfers have by now have lost all confidence and are just wobbling the ball down near the hole to try and avoid 3 putting. It is now time to go to the practice green and practise hitting 3 foot putts with a really fast holing speed. I usually place a tee on the back of the hole and try and hit the back of the hole and the tee at the same time. Good luck and good golfing!

finish and soft ride. The new improved Blade hull, together with its flared bow, adds significant improvements in handling, ride and efficiency, offering a sharper entry into the water. This allows the boat to power through the swell with ease whilst at the same time keeping occupants dry and comfortable. With plenty of room on board for 7 people and plenty of storage under the bow seats, underfloor and in the rear transom lounge, the Cruiseabout 530 is the perfect boat for enjoying an extended day out on the water. Ideal for fishing, water skiing or cruising, its newly designed raised top-deck provides greater driver visibility and features lowerprofile curved windscreens together with a stylish redesigned dash. The redesigned transom provides a smaller outboard well, ideal for today’s lighter and more compact outboards, and the newly improved rear lounge folds neatly away under the transom to help maximise room on those big fishing trips. Moulded side panels, including deep storage pockets and cup holders, add to its practicality. Taking performance, handling and versatility to a whole new level, the Cruiseabout 530 is a continuation in the long line of Quintrex success stories. For further information on the Quintrex Cruiseabout 530, visit exclusive south west dealer Millard Marine and Motorcycle Centre at 5 Sandridge Road, Bunbury or call 9721 3033.

Tough versatile bowrider improves with age

Established in 1945, for almost 80 years Quintrex has been at the heart of the Australian boating scene. As the country’s largest manufacturer of aluminium boats, the Quintrex brand has become synonymous with innovation, quality and value for money and with over 80 models in the current line-up, there’s plenty of choice for all. Far from resting on its laurels, the last couple of years has seen some of the most significant changes to the Quintrex range since the introduction of the award-winning Millennium hull just over a decade ago. With several new models launched, Quintrex has also revived some classic name-plates first made famous in the 1970’s for its current range. With Escape runabouts now re-badged as Fishabouts and Coast Runner runabouts re-badged as Lazeabouts, its best-selling outboard-powered bowriders, formerly known as Freedom Sports, have been re-branded as Cruiseabouts. Numbering 7 models in the range, the Cruiseabout 530 is one of the most popular bowriders in the line-up. This sporty looking bowrider now comes fitted with the brand new Millennium Blade hull, an evolution of the original award-winning Millennium hull famous for its dead-rise

Hello We’re Amanda & Melinda, your personal travel managers

“Travelling with children can be challenging, chaotic and unpredicatable at the best of times. So to help you ease those stress levels we’ve pulled together our top family travel tips.”

Family travel

1. Preparation is key

3. Encourage creativity

If this is your first time travelling with children then plan well ahead. Kids like to take their time, explore and are not worried about getting from A to B. Be prepared for a slower pace and for the inevitable hiccups along the way.

Write it, draw it, capture it. Your family’s holiday will provide your child with an overload of sights, smells and sounds and it’s easy for your child to become overstimulated by their new surroundings.

2. Get the kids involved Yes, it can be scary involving children in the travelling process but it can also be highly rewarding too. Encourage your child to pack their own backpack, explore maps and to get involved in deciding what to do on your family holiday.

A great way to focus their attention is through creativity. Encourage your kids to write a journal, take photos or draw pictures of things they see. This will keep your child in the moment and give them something special to keep once they have returned home.

Mercedes-Benz C250 Powerful agile sedan sets new standards

44

motoring

Following on from our first look at the all new Mercedes-Benz C-Class in the previous issue of The Mandurah Life, in this edition, we take a look at the stunning, turbo-charged 2.0L petrol C250 sedan. Sitting right in the middle of the C-Class range, Mercedes-Benz have high hopes for the C250. With over 45,000 units of the outgoing C-Class sold down under, the C250 sedan is expected to account for almost half of all new C-Class sales in Australia. Expectations are high and if first impressions are anything to go by, certainly not unfounded. With its eye-catching S-Class influenced styling, elegant profile and distinctive LED headlights, the new C-Class has already earned plenty of plaudits for its strong visual appeal. However, on the C250 sedan, it’s both the interior fit out and extra inclusions as standard that really up the ante.

“class-leading refinement and luxury at an affordable price” With a Nappa leather-trimmed steering wheel, active parking assist, front and rear parking sensors and 18-inch alloy wheels already standard on the basic C-Class, the C250 adds leather upholstery, 19-inch alloys, privacy glass and keyless entry to the package. Safety-wise, where the basic model included blindspot assist, collision prevention assist and an electronic stability program with acceleration skid control, the C250 includes nine airbags, steering assist, radar cruise control, rear cross-traffic assist, active blind-spot assist and active lane-keeping assist. Fitted with the same 2.0L direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder engine with seven-speed auto transmission gearbox as the C200, the C250 also delivers noticeably more power. Producing 155kW of power and 350Nm of torque, compared to 135kW and 300Nm in the C200, the C250 flies from 0-100km/h in just 6.6 seconds. All this while still achieving the same 6.0L per 100km fuel efficiency as its entry level sibling. Priced at under $70,000 plus on road costs, the C250 petrol variant offers class-leading refinement and luxury at an affordable price. BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Transport the family in style!

As BMW’s first ever front-wheel drive vehicle, the 2 Series Active Tourer represents a significant shift in focus for the Bavarian luxury car brand. However, with the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) market big business these days, there’s been a certain inevitability about BMW’s foray into the premium compact class for some time. As the new kid on the block, the 2 Series Active Tourer has certainly set the bar high. Offering plenty of comfort and luxurious touches inside the cabin, the new model retains a stylish, sporty edge with its wellproportioned, sleek lines on the outside. Combining its long wheelbase with a raised roofline, passengers can enjoy an unprecedented feel of spaciousness together with the commanding views that a higher seating position offers. Versatile luggage compartments, a sliding rear seat and its split-folding rear backrest further enhance the vehicle’s practicality. Safety levels also impress with BMW ConnectedDrive providing a range of assistance systems to include, amongst others, Traffic Jam Assistant, a feature aimed at making freeway driving less stressful. In addition to the sophisticated, all-new front-wheel drive system, the 2 Series Active Tourer also introduces a new generation of powerful, light and fuel-efficient engines in

both three and four-cylinder options. Delivering exceptional efficiency, the brand new three-cylinder petrol engine, fitted to the entry level 218i Active Tourer, generates 100kW and 136hp whilst still achieving a combined consumption of 4.9L per 100kms. The 218d Active Tourer, however, does even better with its four-cylinder diesel engine achieving a combined cycle consumption of 4.1L per 100kms. All this while still producing 330Nm of power, a top speed of 208 km/h and a dash from standstill to 100 km/h in just 8.9 seconds! Top of the bill in this class is the 225i Active Tourer. Fitted with a standard eightspeed Steptronic gearbox and four-cylinder petrol powerplant, it powers from 0-100km/h in around 6.5 seconds, achieves a top speed of 240km/h and consumes a miserly 5.8L per 100km/h on a combined cycle. As the first of potentially a number of frontwheel drive cars from BMW, the 2 Series Active Tourer offers a compelling choice for the new breed of upwardly mobile families. Keep an eye out for further additions to the line-up. BMW X6

Exciting second generation SAV revealed!

It’s not often a car can lay claim to creating a completely new genre. But back in 2009, that’s exactly what the BMW X6 achieved. With its unique blend of the robustness and versatility of an SUV and the sporting elegance of a coupé, the Sports Activity Coupé (SAV) was born and not unsurprisingly other luxury car manufacturers were quick to follow in its wake. Five years on and with global sales of over 250,000, BMW has further strengthened its grip on the lucrative SAV market with the launch of the second generation X6. Delivering improved handling and ride comfort, enhanced performance, lower fuel consumption and featuring permanently active all-wheel drive, the new X6 also comes with an impressive array of extra equipment over and above the previous model. This includes bi-xenon headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, an 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission with steering wheel shift paddles, leather trim, two-zone climate control, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and the

Driving Assistant safety package from BMW ConnectedDrive. A new line-up of engines features the latest-generation V8 developing 330kW and 450hp for the X6 xDrive50i, a 190kW, 258hp six-cylinder diesel engine for the X6 xDrive30d and another straight-six diesel with three turbochargers developing 280kW and 381hp in the X6 M50d. Using the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, extensive BMW EfficientDyanamics technology and enhanced aerodynamics and weight saving techniques, fuel consumption has been cut on average by an extraordinary 22 per cent. Underpinned by a newly developed aluminium intensive chassis and featuring an improved adaptive suspension package, the new X6 delivers added agility and improved response. With three packages to choose from, Comfort, Dynamic and Professional, all featuring adaptive damping control, the new ... cont. pg 50 49

model also comes with the new electromechanical steering system as standard. Longer and slightly higher than the first generation X6 (34mm and 12mm respectively), and with a more sculpted and aggressive look than its predecessor, there is still no mistaking

its undeniable appeal and luxurious feel. Its continued popularity seems already assured. For further information and pricing on the new BMW X6, contact Auto Classic in Victoria Park on 9311 7533, or Westcoast BMW in Wangara on 9303 5888.

Commercial Photography and Design By Mark Sutton

With the New Year upon us, now is the perfect time for giving some thought about revitalising your marketing and branding. Perhaps you’ve been putting off getting high quality photography and content developed for your website? Maybe you’re thinking you need fresher, stronger design ideas? What about some high-definition video for a YouTube channel? Or a multimedia presentation for trade shows or displays? The good news is it’s never been easier and more affordable to have professional digital media produced for your company. With the surge in online and social media marketing, it’s more critical than ever to have well styled and visually strong images as part of an advertising and branding strategy. It’s a well-known fact that good quality images simply engender trust and are synonymous with quality. Good commercial photography and design is about understanding the brand, style and image a company wants to convey. Our brains process visual data 60,000 times faster than text information so having professional photography as part of an online campaign is essential. Similarly, if you have content with accompanying pictures, people

are more likely to engage with it, like it or link to it. More importantly, you need to choose a professional and experienced company qualified to do the work. Remember, good commercial photography and design should portray your company in a positive way as people visiting your website or looking at your branding will make snap judgements and form opinions based on the visual content they see. Mark Sutton is the owner of Imagepro Photography and Design, a Mandurah-based commercial photography and design company with over 25 years’ experience and a proven track record of producing high quality visual media for a wide range of businesses. Services offered include digital photography, graphic design and high definition video and multimedia production, including 2D animation. The company works for well-known local and interstate businesses and has a detailed understanding of publishing and technical specifications for major newspapers, magazines and online delivery. It can also help with local print and magazine advertising, real estate marketing, online digital media, ... cont. pg 52 51

Book Review Art in Nature David Rennie Right from his childhood, David Rennie had always been creative but found it difficult to keep his interest for long in any medium. Photography was different. It was only by chance, however, that Rennie discovered photography when his sister gave him a small camera to take with them on holiday. The following year at age 47, he bought his own camera and soon after, much to his surprise, captured an image of a bird so striking that it won a local photography competition. Through Art in Nature, Rennie poignantly explains how he has become the man and photographer he is today. Predominantly shots of birds, the pages display amazing clarity, angles and balance. Pictures have their own captions to set the tone or short paragraphs to tell their background stories. Rennie clearly feels a strong connection to the Mandurah Wetlands where most of the images in the book were taken. He is passionate about

preserving this area, which he comments, much like many wetlands around the world, is under threat of disappearing. Art in Nature is more than a collection of intricate images that show the beauty in nature’s ever changing form. It is also a book that raises awareness of the precarious nature of the environment around us. Art in Nature is available from Exisle Publishing www.exislepublishing.com.au and at all good book shops. RRP $55.00. It is also available as a limited collector’s edition. 54

ARTIST REVIEW

Arts Culture Peel (ACP) Printmakers experience. “Some techniques can be absorbed by watching and doing, however, the recommended approach for a budding printmaker is to attend a formal course or workshop to get started, then ACP Printmakers Judy Evans, Debra Petit and Bill Riggs follow up by putting those newly learned techniques into practice with the ACP Printmakers” says group member Bill Rigg. Naturally, he jests, all newcomers will need to know how to put the kettle on! ACP Printmakers formed in July 2014 as part of the incorporated and newly invigorated local Mandurah organisation, ‘Arts Culture Peel’. The core of the printmaking artists were members of the ‘Out of Bounds’ group which held several successful exhibitions at the Alcoa Mandurah Art Gallery. At present the ACP artists are mostly involved in printmaking and pottery activities, but any art group or artist can join ACP and take advantage of an existing committee/ constitution/banking structure to book halls, run workshops, weekly classes, weekly meet-ups, exhibitions etc. To meet the artists and find out more about future printmaking workshops and classes simply show up at the CASM workshop on a Thursday morning for a coffee and a chat.

Every Thursday morning around 9.00am, the CASM Workshop springs to life with a group of creative and explorative printmakers who come together to laugh, draw, plan, chat, create, drink coffee and print their latest designs. “There is no formal structure” explains one of the founding members Judy Evans, “apart from an early discussion to work out the schedule for using the printing press (which handles paper sizes up to A2), and more importantly who is making the first cuppa”. The artists come together to produce artworks, however the group culture is about sharing ideas and peer review as well as getting out of the home studio to socialise with other printmakers. All forms of printmaking are explored including lithograph, etching, dry point, linocut, mono-printing and collograph. New group members are very welcome and need only arrive at the Workshop on a Thursday morning and say hello. Printing advice is offered and unstructured and self-help style assistance is available for anyone who has no printmaking

Eliciting feelings of achievement and fun respectively were the joyous exhibits ‘One Step at a Time’ and ‘Yarnbombed’. ‘One Step at a Time’ consisted of small handcrafted white figures running towards and climbing the rings of a black ladder with the final figure sitting on a high shelf with its arms raised in victory. The work referencing the challenges people with disabilities face and the steps taken to overcome these and reach their goals. ‘Yarnbombed’ bought a smile to all faces, consisting of an old bicycle defiantly mounted half way up the gallery wall, wearing a newly constructed skin of brightly coloured knitted lengths and spring finger flowers. Of the many thought provoking artworks, ‘Where do we Go?’ quickly became a gallery favourite. A battered suitcase with blackboard paint on the front required the viewer to write a destination then have an instamatic photo taken to add to the expanding artwork. The end of the exhibition presented over sixty diverse places to go and more than eighty smiling faces. Ability Arts provide for and engage in activities which allow freedom of expression and experimentation with many different types and forms of art, music, drama, sport and photography. They welcome new members and can be contacted at 9582 6333.

Community First October to november 2014

CASM recently featured a unique installation exhibition created by the Ability Arts Group from Community First. Exploring media such as photography, paper, ceramics, film, sound, sculpture and recycled objects, the artists created eighteen engaging installations exploring diverse connotations, both positive and negative of the word ‘Go’. Entering the gallery, visitors experienced a visual delight of dozens of small origami cranes Images by Roz D’Raine making their flight to freedom from a suspended wire bird cage. A cluster of birds fallen to the bottom of the cage waited anxiously for those closer to the open doorway to make their escape. This feeling of movement was reiterated in a second installation ‘Birds of a Feather’, consisting of individually crafted ceramic birds preparing for and launching a migration journey. Individuality amongst the flock was communicated through colour, shape and texture whilst the fragility of survival was alluded to through a centrally placed twig nest of handcrafted crackled ceramic eggs. Sensitively presented was the installation titled ‘Thoughts of Letting Go’ which comprised of written and recorded responses to the concept of letting go of thoughts and memories of past incidents that may hold back or impede an individual from reaching happiness or their full potential. Times are changing and, for many, the type of home required in our ever growing city is also changing. Much like other areas that have experienced a population boom, Mandurah is now seeing a strong demand for smaller block sizes. With plenty of new estates springing up around town, the decision to downsize on land without compromising on the size of the home is becoming increasingly easier. Currently, there are a number of areas offering affordable living with prices ranging anywhere from $290K to $450K, depending on location and size. Many families are now snapping up these blocks and still building a decent sized 3 or 4 bedroom home. To safeguard our precious water supplies, many of these homes are being built with paved or landscaped gardens using native trees and artificial turf. Owners are enjoying the fact that they no longer have the worry of lawn mowing and watering. In addition to plenty of green title blocks around 250sqm in size available, there are also estates offering the added benefit of common areas, pools and club houses. One of these estates is the Coco C Bay estate in Falcon. This area is a favourite for those who want to be a little out of town but still need facilities, such as schools and shopping, close by. Another popular area south of town is Timbers Edge Estate located on the estuary in Dawesville. Picturesque and peaceful and set amongst beautiful big Tuart and peppermint trees, the area offers estuary walks, bike riding and water sports aplenty. Both of these estates offer sparkling swimming pools, a gym, a club house and games room and provide the perfect low maintenance lifestyle. Take advantage of the common areas

and parks and swim your lazy summer days away for a reasonably priced club membership and sinking fund. Positioned right on the water’s edge behind the Falcon Shopping Centre, discover an appealing smaller estate without the amenities or quarterly fees. These homes are ideal for FIFO buyers and young working families with tight schedules and budgets. The ideal first home in a beautiful location. To the north, find Madora Bay, offering smaller blocks and established homes close to the beach, schools and freeway to Perth. And, for those commuting to the city, there is an abundance of new homes springing up on smaller blocks around the Mandurah train station. Finally, to the east of town in Bortolo Drive, Greenfields, there is a choice of small block house and land packages selling at very affordable prices. These homes are close to the university campus, train, freeway and hospital. With the growing demand for rental accommodation, these homes on smaller, manageable blocks also offer the ideal opportunity for property investors to compile a portfolio of rentable, easy-care homes giving good returns. Meet...

Boyd Oakes of Boyd Design

In this issue, we talk to Boyd Oakes, owner of Wannanup-based Boyd Design, one of the south west’s fastest growing building design companies. How long have you been designing homes and how did you get started? Boyd Design was established in 1999 with its primary focus being the design of landscapes and swimming pools. When alfresco areas gained popularity, I added these to our scope of services. This expanded into home additions and, one day, I was asked to design a new home. The rest is history. It’s been an amazing journey. What do you think are the secrets to your company’s success? There are a number of factors that set us apart. Having experience with swimming pool and landscape design means we can deliver the complete picture, not just the house. Open, honest communication and my genuine passion in ensuring my clients are doing the right thing by themselves proves invaluable. Does designing homes in the south west present any unique challenges? Every home presents a unique set of challenges, no matter where it is. We’ve recently completed a design in Hastie Street, Bunbury. The site was practically a sand dune - very steep. The challenge here was to reduce the cost and impact of the retaining walls through clever design. Do you have any particular styles that you favour? Just one; the style my clients like! Home design is my passion so I love all styles. No matter what style my clients favour, we work tirelessly to deliver the result they seek. As is evident on our website, there’s no “Boyd” style per se. However, I often hear people say our design style is unique, which is great.

Do you have a favourite project that you have worked on? At the risk of sounding like a politician, no, I love them all. It’s all about the challenge to deliver a perfect result for our clients. There’s no better reward than the positive feedback I receive from them, that’s what it’s all about for me. From 250K through to millions in value, it’s the challenge I love. What will be the future trends in building design? Good question. Currently the ‘Hamptons’ style is popular, a style which is hundreds of years old! For the most part, I believe people follow the trend of the day, which has the associated risk of being outdated quickly. Cost effective, energy efficient design is also a hot topic. Build what you love, I say. How do you relax away from the business? Family does it for me. I love spending time with my favourite people. No matter how stressed I am, how tired I may be, it’s my family who ease the tension and let me forget about the business for a short while every day. My 62

New Year, New Start Plan for success in 2015 By Damian James

The New Year is a time for resolutions and reflection on personal finances. Did you set goals last year? If so, did you achieve them? It’s that time of year when it’s prudent to take stock, conduct a financial health check and look at ways at better achieving your goals in the year ahead. Setting a goal and having a plan is a great way to not only achieve some of your financial aims but is also a great way of controlling cash flow. Making a plan for the year also gives the opportunity to set goals and to divide their execution into monthly and weekly benchmarks. Here are some ideas on planning for the year ahead:-

Consumer debt

Achieving most financial goals involves saving of some sort but it also involves debt reduction. Find a way to rid yourself of the most expensive debt (credit cards). Make a plan for this.

Efficient debt

A great deal of money can be saved by fine-tuning your mortgage. On a $300,000, 25-year mortgage at 4.65 per cent, the total interest bill is $207,941. But at 5.21 per cent, the total interest is $237,198. A difference over the long term, all things being equal, of almost $30,000.

Goals

Write down what you want to achieve and make different columns for each goal. You can have basic ones, such as ‘eliminate credit card debt’ and bigger dreams, such as ‘buy a house’. Write them down, be realistic, and, if you have a partner, make sure both of you agree on them.

Review insurance needs

Plan

Advice

As you move through your career and life, your insurance needs will change. Give some thought as to how your family has grown, if your job has changed or if you have acquired any additional assets. If so, compare the level of cover needed to what you already have.

A year gives plenty of time to plan to reach your goals. For each goal, break its achievement into weekly, monthly and quarterly steps. Many small steps add up to big goals.

Acknowledge you can’t know everything and take expert advice early and not just when you’re in trouble.

Final tip

We all know there’s going to be a holiday period at the end of every year. The New Year is a great opportunity to get an early start on savings. Now is the time to open a Christmas saver account, keep it separate from daily transactions and save a small amount of income each week to create a cash fund. Damian James is the Branch Principal and Wealth Manager at Yellow Brick Road Mandurah. Call him on 6365 2170.

Discipline

Have a good look at the plan. If it’s worth pursuing, it’s worth committing to. Decide early.

Weed out

Throw out the goals you won’t follow through on and don’t sabotage yourself from the outset. If you know you won’t go to the gym every day, change it to something you will do. 64

Introducing... Cosmelan

A cutting edge skin treatment to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation One of the most common skin conditions, hyperpigmentation is also one of the hardest to treat. Typically visible on the face and neck through patches of melanin or brown spots on the skin, the condition is predominantly caused by excessive sun exposure, an unhealthy lifestyle or even pregnancy. It’s a condition that affects up to 80% of women over the age of 25. New from Advanced Cosmeceuticals, Cosmelan offers a multi-layered, intensive approach to pigmentation reduction. This innovative range helps to block the production of melanin in the skin and reduce the visible signs of the condition. Combining both salon treatments and home care products, the brand has been introduced into the anti-ageing market, following extensive research into its efficiency and reliability. Each Cosmelan pack contains a salon treatment, degreaser, preparatory mask and a moisturiser and night cream for home use. The

degreaser is used by the salon to clear dead skin cells from the skin’s surface and prepare the skin for a Cosmelan mask that contains a mixture of active, anti-pigmentation and anti-ageing ingredients. The moisturiser and night cream are used daily, after the salon treatment, to maintain and improve results. During research, it was shown that participants using Cosmelan experienced significant visible improvements and reduced signs of pigmentation not only at the end of the treatment but also a week later following twice-daily applications of the maintenance cream. A considerable improvement over similar products on the market, the products success has been attributed to its safe, reliable, naturally derived, scientifically validated ingredients. Cosmelan is now available in Mandurah at Total Skin and Body Centre Day Spa. For further information, call 9535 4530 or visit them at Unit 2/2A, Peel Street (next to the Atrium Hotel). 66

Dr Harvey’s Clinic The Lips In addition to being effective in the treatment of frown lines, crow’s feet and smile lines, dermal fillers are also ideal for boosting lip areas where shape and definition have been lost. They can also be highly effective in eradicating the small vertical lines on the upper lip (often called smoker’s lines). Treatment with dermal fillers is normally a quick and easy process. A fine needle is used to inject tiny amounts of gel into the skin to produce volume that reshapes facial contours. Treatments are generally found to be painless although local anaesthetic can be used, if necessary. Immediately after the treatment, patients can expect some slight redness, swelling, tenderness or an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal reaction to the treatment and the discomfort generally disappears in a few days. It is extremely rare for any type of adverse reaction. Results can be seen immediately after treatment and we generally expect the lip enhancement treatment to last around 6 to 9 months, depending on the patient and the level of product used.

often be a hereditary problem or a physiological condition that prevents the body from correctly regulating temperature. This medical condition can be uncomfortable, stressful and disabling and can even disrupt career choices, relationships and recreational activities, leading to low self-esteem and emotional difficulties. We recommend a non-surgical treatment that injects a small, natural purified protein targeting sweating at its source. Once injected, a small solution enters the specific gland in question, temporarily blocking the release of the chemical that signals the body to produce perspiration. Administered into the skin of the armpits using a fine needle, generally the treatment takes about 20 minutes. Discomfort is, in most cases, brief and although the injection may cause a short stinging sensation, normal activities can be resumed shortly after treatment. It then typically takes about a week for the treatment to take full effect. Dr Harvey Sacks is dedicated to the advancement and teaching of best practice cosmetic medicine. A joint founder of the cosmetics Physicians Society of Australasia, he is a former executive member of the board of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery. Running clinics in Perth, Waikiki, Mandurah, Bunbury and Kalgoorlie, Dr Sacks is available in Mandurah at Total Skin and Body Centre Day Spa. Call 9535 4530 to make an appointment.

Excessive Sweating We are all susceptible to sweating in our hot WA summers but for some excessive sweating can be an embarrassing, debilitating, all year round problem. Known as hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating is a condition caused by overactive sweat glands. Although stress or high temperatures can increase perspiration these factors do not cause hyperhidrosis. Staying Motivated This Summer By Bec O’Donnell

Let’s be honest, almost everyone at some stage in their life has started a fitness program or joined a gym only to quit later on or even never use the membership after the initial enthusiasm has worn off. Why is it that we don’t keep motivated? There are many things that can distract us and serve as a reason or excuse to skip our workouts. Being time poor, overtime at work, sick children, being sick ourselves, social events – the list goes on. Sometimes, we would just rather sit back on the couch and watch TV. It’s so much simpler, isn’t it? So how do we push ourselves to stay motivated with our training? At The Cave, we have found the following factors play a key role in keeping us and our members motivated:Surround yourself with like-minded people Good training partners are invaluable. Surround yourself with motivated, inspiring and enthusiastic people and you will find that it is contagious! We train hard at The Cave and we tend to attract people who are driven to succeed. Friendships develop and going to the gym no longer feels like a chore. We push each other and find ourselves doing things we never thought possible. There’s no doubt that training with a group of people like this can increase your odds of success ten-fold. No matter how bad a day you might be having, with the right group of people, it’s nearly impossible to not give 100% every time you set foot in the gym. Focus on your goals Be specific. As the saying goes, a goal without a plan is just a wish. Whether your goal is to lose 5kg, run a

kilometre or to lift your own bodyweight, all of this means nothing unless you have a plan and are getting up each day committing the time to achieving these goals. There is a big emphasis on performance based goals at The Cave. We find that people stay the most driven and see the best change in body composition when striving towards goals. For many women, it’s the ability to do proper push-ups, bodyweight pull-ups or to lift their own bodyweight. For the guys, it may be to bench press 100kg plus. Aim high, work hard and it will only be a matter of time until you are kicking goals. Try something different! If you’ve been doing the same workout routine for months and seeing little results, then it’s no wonder motivation is waning. For changes in physique, fitness and strength we need to constantly be challenging ourselves in new ways. This is about getting comfortable about being uncomfortable in our training. Doing what’s easy will rarely produce amazing results nor does it offer the same feeling of achievement we get from doing something that tests us! Switch your 5km jog for picking up some kettlebells. Trade out your pump class and start proper strength-based barbell training. Put the excuses aside, step out of your comfort zone, surround yourself with like-minded people and make exercise a life changing habit. Caring for Senior Animals

risk of dental disease as the soft food does little in the way of physically cleaning instead leaving teeth coated in food remnants, encouraging bacterial growth. Specialised diets specifically designed to protect a pet’s teeth can be fed and the Australian Veterinary Dental Association also recommends brushing your pet’s teeth daily.

By Alexandra Turpin

Older animals are susceptible to a number of different conditions with some issues more prevalent than others. However, we like to think that age is not a disease and with the right care and preventative approach, many of these conditions can be successfully managed.

De-sexing A de-sexed pet will generally live a longer and healthier life. For example, females can suffer from severe physical and nutritional exhaustion if allowed to continually breed. There is also a vastly reduced risk of getting cancer or other diseases of the reproductive organs. Common cancers include testicular cancer or prostate cancer in males or cystic ovaries and ovarian tumours in females. Pyometra, an infection within the uterus, is particularly common in un-neutered female dogs and is a disease that can require major surgery to cure.

Arthritis Even without your elderly pet showing any signs of pain, there is a good chance that they are already suffering from joint degradation or pain. Dogs and cats are particularly good at masking the pain, so it’s not always immediately obvious of any change in condition. To help manage the problem, there are a number of foods and supplements, as well as veterinary treatments, available for joint and arthritis problems. We recommend blood testing every 6 to 12 months to look for signs of any underlying issues such as diabetes, kidney and liver function problems and endocrine disorders. Early detection is the best prevention. Weight control is also very important as keeping your pets slim will ease the pain of arthritis and slow down its progression. Keeping your pet fit will also help by having sufficient muscle to support their joints. Some breeds are also more prone to arthritis. Large breed dogs, Retrievers and German Shepherds are among some of the breeds at a higher risk. For these animals, extra care with weight and exercise is even more important.

We run a regular seniors’ month with competitions, discounts and even a couple of special events. Keep regularly up to date with what’s happening on our Facebook page, Pinjarra-Veterinary-Hospital. Alexandra Turpin is a veterinary nurse at Pinjarra Veterinary Hospital, 1754 Pinjarra Road, Pinjarra. Open Mon to Fri 7am to 6pm and Saturday 8am to 12pm, the hospital also provides an after-hours’ emergency service. Call 9531 1555 or find them on Facebook.

Dental Hygiene Bad teeth in pets can lead to tooth root abscesses, periodontal disease and the need for extraction that will require an anaesthetic, the risks of which increase with age. The early signs of dental disease are often quite subtle. A redness of the gums and a build-up of calculus can sometimes be seen by lifting up the lips and, when close to the animal, bad breath (halitosis) can often be noticeable. Good dental care starts at home and diet is a main factor in influencing an animal’s dental health. Animals that are fed a diet entirely of tinned or soft food will often be at an increased 72

Restaurant Review

Alaskan King Crab? You’ll find all of your favourite toppings as well. But what about the ultimate test; how do the pizzas taste? Arriving for lunch, we sampled a delicious Pulled Pork and Slaw, part of the Upper Crust range, and three current specials; the middleeastern inspired Sriracha Beef, a fantastic Moorish Lamb, and an Asian-influenced Kimchi BBQ Chicken. We were hooked! It was almost impossible to choose our favourite but with crisp light bases, fresh ingredients sourced locally and generous toppings the order of the day, we were bowled over with the quality and freshness. With dietary options to suit all (gluten-free, vegan and lactose-free pizzas are all available), there’s also a range of kids’ pizzas, pastas and starters. A BYO license also allows for a pizza with a glass of wine or beer overlooking Mandjar Bay or take advantage of the $3 home delivery service for orders over $20. Having eaten pizza in the birthplace of the dish, Naples, the biggest compliment we can pay Crust is that its pizzas were on a par with the very best that Italy can offer. This is a pizza restaurant that comes highly recommended. Make sure you pay a visit yourselves this summer.

Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar

Most of us love a pizza and whether dining at our favourite Italian restaurant or popping into our local supermarket for a convenient frozen pizza, we have all experienced varying levels of satisfaction. In short, if you are selling pizzas, it’s a competitive world out there and if you want to be successful, it’s important to do it well. Crust Gourmet Pizza on Mandurah Terrace is a relatively new entrant to the pizza market. A franchise that originated in the eastern states, there are now around 25 trading in Western Australia with the Mandurah restaurant having opened in December 2013. Owned by Tim and Amandine, the couple also owns the Rockingham franchise and have just set up in Baldivis too. So, how does Crust stack up against its plentiful competition? Well, for those after choice, there’s no denying that Crust more than delivers. We counted in excess of 30 different pizza options on the menu and that wasn’t including the impressive range of seasonal specials that appears on a regular basis. Let’s also be clear this is no ordinary menu either. Crust has Open 7 Days 5pm to 9pm (Friday 12pm to 10pm) quickly become renowned for its Shop 3, 9 Mandurah Terrace unique approach to its pizza making BYO (Beer and wine only) and it really is a refreshing change. My Favourite Dish By David Davies, Sharky’s

Premium Battered Shark Bay Whiting

arancini balls, chilli and lime prawn skewers, lemon pepper calamari and battered fish goujons all served with sweet chilli sauce, tartare sauce and lemon wedges. Next up is the Atlantic Battered Cod and finally, there is our Premium Battered South West Shark. Both of these dishes are served with chips, garden salad, coleslaw, tartare sauce and lemon wedges. Using high quality bronzy shark meat, our Premium Battered South West Shark dish is a relatively new addition to the restaurant. After all, if you own a restaurant called Sharky’s, customers are probably going to expect shark available on the menu! We look forward to serving you this summer while you enjoy our glorious waterfront setting! Open 7 days from 10am until late, Sharky’s is located at Shop 1, 4 Zephyr Mews, Mandurah Ocean Marina. For further information, go online at www.sharkysmandurah.com.au or call 9534 8825.

Using whiting sourced from beautiful Shark Bay, this popular dish was first added to our menu about 2 years ago. It has also just been included on our new list of Signature Dishes available at the restaurant this summer. Served with chips, homemade coleslaw and a garden salad, this delicious dish beautifully showcases our light, crisp batter, which works perfectly with the small pieces of whiting. The dish actually contains 5 to 6 pieces of fish so as well as being a satisfying lunch or evening meal it also works well as a dish to share between a group. Squeeze a bit of lemon juice over the battered fillets and dip them into our sensational tartare sauce. Fantastic! If you like this dish, why not try our three other Signature Dishes on the summer menu? Our Seafood Tasting Plate has long been a favourite and includes a huge selection of fresh seafood, including prawn and crab 76

Summer Recipe

Chilli, Pumpkin and Feta Risotto

The tangy feta cheese in this risotto is deliciously creamy and works perfectly with the mellow pumpkin and subtle kick of the chilli. This is a very simple dish to prepare and you can concentrate on getting the rice just right while the pumpkin is slowly roasting in the oven. Serves 4

with the pumpkin. Roast for 20 to 25 minutes until the pumpkin is tender and starting to brown. Remove and keep the pumpkin warm. While the pumpkin is cooking, fry the onion gently in a little oil until it softens. Add the garlic and fry for 1 minute. Add the rice and oregano and stir well to ensure the rice is coated with the oil mixture. Add the wine, simmer and let it evaporate. Add the stock. Just add a ladle or two at a time, allowing it to be absorbed by the rice before adding more. Stir gently and frequently for 15 to 20 minutes until all the stock has been absorbed or until the rice is cooked yet still firm to the bite. Meanwhile, toast the pine nuts in a dry frying pan, stirring them around every few seconds until they start to colour. This should only take a minute or two. When the rice is al dente, remove the pan from the heat and gently stir in the pumpkin and feta cheese. Sprinkle the toasted pine nuts over the top. Delicious!

Ingredients 900g pumpkin, peeled, cut into small cubes 4 tbsp olive oil 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 1 onion, finely chopped 2 small cloves garlic, finely chopped 300g Arborio rice 1 tsp dried oregano 100ml white wine 1 litre hot vegetable stock pine nuts salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method Preheat the oven to 200째C (180째C fan-forced). Place the pumpkin on a large baking paperlined oven tray. Add 2 tablespoons of oil, the chilli and a little salt and pepper and mix well
